And already, there are festive things in what my best girlfriend Nat describes as my element that will quickly bring me comfort and joy. My own REALITY will be in the SPOTLIGHT for the first time in a long time. FIRST: In addition to Ant setting up tix for us to see "Dreamgirls" at The Apollo on Friday and "FELA" on Broadway on Saturday, he has planned a karaoke set. Of course, right? LOL! He knows I love to sing and karaoke is a way I can do it often (since it’s been a minute since I’ve done my own ‘intimate evening of song’: http://216.117.188.141/rileyshowforkodjoe.wmv). Then, my friend Kevin-Anthony called me and invited me to sing Diana Ross’ "The Boss" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBKSjzqe5Bw) at his Saturday 11/29-installment of "Broadway Uptown: Celebrating the Music of Ashford & Simpson", who my Dad ran into recently at the Detroit Airport.  (http://www.theatermania.com/content/show.cfm/show/161434)
 I love all things DIANA, Nick & Val, and NYC!... So what a welcome home/bday treat! And I guess you know what I'll rehearse a time or two at the karaoke bday set on 11/21? LOL! I'm HONORED. HUMBLED. EXCITED. Will just have FUN with it as I must figure out how to relay the ESSENCE OF ROSS' BOSS (which is my automatic pilot) and REFINE IT TO RILEY (so it's a new experience and not just mimicry... you know?). I'll find it. Kinda' like what DIANA did (but less intense... perhaps) in her search for BILLIE in "LADY SINGS THE BLUES". You know? At that point, she was a SEASONED SINGER IN HER OWN RIGHT but had to split the difference between DIANA and BILLIE for the recordings and the filming - since so much of BILLIE was burnt into her soul from having researched so organically and intensely. You know?

Though I sing and do intimate evenings of song in NYC, I consider this a stretch - especially considering the treasured material (around which I'll quickly calm my nerves come rehearsal time) and that it MAY be in front of the composers themselves, though that won’t exactly be the first time:

FLASHBACK TO SEPTEMBER, 2003:

I hosted an event at Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar for my girlfriend Caroline and she wanted me to lead the audience in Ashford-&-Simpson composition REACH OUT & TOUCH as Diana's recording of it - her first as a solo artist - played. Next thing I know, Valerie comes from the back... and joins me. I KEPT SINGING... but mostly I was in AWE! LOL! I REALLY LOVE THEIR WORK! MOSTLY ALL OF IT!

ELIZABETH RANKIN-FULCHER WROTE: Hello there:  The above-captioned event at the Sugar Bar last night went quite well and we're planning a repeat performance at Akwaaba Cafe in Brooklyn in the near future.   Representatives from BET attended and excerpts from the event will be shown on BET, September 11.  We were delighted and excited when Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashford joined us; our wonderful evening ended with Valerie singing "Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand" the song she wrote with Nick.  The fabulous Patrick Riley was our MC.

I WROTE: I wish y'all could have been at the BACK TO SCHOOL WITH BLACK AUTHORS event I hosted last night at Ashford and Simpson's NYC spot SUGAR BAR. I really just came aboard as a favor to my friend CAROLINE BREWER, who asks me often to host/moderate events in which she participates. (She was one of the three spotlighted authors of color). Thinking of our hosts (Ashford and Simpson), I told Caroline that ""no wind, no rain nor winter's cold" [could stop me from being there to host the event for her] ("Ain't No Mountain High Enough" is an Ashford & Simpson composition). I also told the audience that Caroline's current title "Kara Finds Sunshine on a Rainy Day" oozes of irony as this event took place on one of New York City’s rainiest days in a while, but there we all were to bathe in the light of these literary treasures.
And still, the evening exceeded my expectations. What I expected? For Caroline and her fellow black writers to inspire us with their words, illustrations, photographs... and presentations. That they did.
I had even gotten a nice introduction to "Ashford & Simpson" (compliments of Caroline); I've met the famous songwriting/singing duo on many occasions as we attend a lot of the same events and shows in town. In fact, Valerie said "we see you all the time!!!" Nick agreed. But this was an introduction with meat as I was hosting an event on their stage at their restaurant. Then, after each scribe had there moment in the spotlight, I returned to the mic to welcome questions. Before I could do that, the first strains of a tune-so-familiar begins to play. Caroline interrupts the expected flow. "Patrick! We have one more song we want to share [earlier, an instrumental had scored her book's recitation]. And everyone can join in. Patrick will lead us...".

This marks the beginning of my out-of-body experience as the recorded singing voice of Diana Ross pipes in (now accompanied by me in my moment of quick ham adjustment): "Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand... make this world a better place, if you can...".
yes, Caroline chose Diana's first solo single as a finale for her special literary evening. and here, she's telling me to lead the way. instantaneously, i've channeled Diana (in my singing voice of baritone) and jump off of the Sugar Bar stage into the dining room - asking folks to sing-along. i'm also shaking hands as she does (and i have begun to do in my own little cabaret).
as i pour through the sea (or pond) of excited guests, Caroline alerts me that Miss Valerie Simpson is coming up (from the back) to join in our love-fest. she's handed a mic and begins to do her vocal interpretation of Reach Out with Diana's prerecorded vocals underneath (and my own right beside her, not to mention the many who are harmonizing with us).
valerie and i end the song (which fades out). we're holding hands, which are also outstretched and reaching for the stars. i take my free hand and put the mic to my mouth to announce "Ladies and Gentlemen! Valerie Simpson, who along with her husband Nickolas Ashford wrote 'Reach Out And Touch'!!!!!!!" The audience cheers - some gag as if they did not know to which I say: "Just thought I'd offer that tidbit for those of you who were living under a rock". The audience applauded again. Valerie laughed at my quip and then graciously shouted me out with "... and to our host, Patrick!!". more applause.
at the end of the program, we had Ashford and Simpson come back out, so i could thank them one more time for hosting the event at their spot. they both spoke and thanked the organizers for using The Sugar Bar for such a culturally significant event, which - by the way - was being chronicled by BET and is scheduled to air (in some form) on BET NIGHTLY NEWS on September 11th. (Check it out - if you remember...; it'll likely be a little over a one-minute feature piece... but maybe they'll include some of these highlights.).
before ashford and simpson left, they told me i did a wonderful job of hosting the evening and bringing everyone together. i attributed "Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand)" to that. they argued i had brought everyone together before that special moment. they asked me to please come back and join them again very soon. their events manager asked for my information (on their behalf) - so maybe we'll get together for more collaborations in the near future.  i added "i thought i was just doing my friend Caroline a favor, but one of my many dreams came true tonight!". they smiled graciously, and each gave me a hug.
i've admired ashford and simpson for so many years - not just because of their work with diana ("ain't no mountain high enough"... "the boss"... "remember me".... "surrender".... "it's my house"... "i ain't been licked"... "no one gets the prize"... "what you gave me"... "some things you never get used to"... "i'm gonna make you love me" [ashford]), but because of their collabos with other stars (like Chaka, Whitney, Jennifer Holliday) and their own repertoire ("high rise"... "is it still good to 'ya?"... "solid"... "don't cost 'ya nothin'"... "found a cure"). i love their brand of r&b. it's smooth, silky... yet gospel-tinged --- like i like.
"i was so right...so right... thought i could turn emotion on and off. i was so sure... but LOVE taught me who was, who was, who was... THE BOSS." (LOVE was THE BOSS!!!!).

MEANWHILE IN THESE LAST & EVIL DAYS OF L.A. (SMILE!):

Derek and I went to my L.A. buddy Jae Joseph's Fashion Show - a Lupus Foundation Benefit - at O Hotel in Downtown L.A. The event celebrated all things www.poshglam.com (for which Jae is now the West Coast Publisher) - including Natalia Romano's fashions. It also featured a funky-futuristic performance by Logan. THINK: Grace Jones, Lady Gaga, and Prince! I’d actually met him a few days prior with my Adolpha. We saw Jae too. You’ll recall, she is my best friend Ern’s cousin. She invited me out (on her dime! YAYY!) for some great food (Kitchen 24 in Hollywood); great Paper Mag party with cool folks like Paris Hilton's almost-BFF Anch; Afterwards, we joined Adolpha's girl-and-guy friends at The Blue Monkey for dancing - including a twirl around the dance floor to my Diana's "Upside Down" GREAT NIGHT! THANKS ADOLPHA!

On one night, got to enjoy "Monica: Still Standing" on east coast feed of my friend Derek's Direct TV after which he, his buddy Michelle, and I went to WEHO's Cantina (for a lite bite) and Micky's (to support my friend Tony's hip hop dance contest). Michelle and Tony were sponsors for the evening... or I would have been at my hotel in Gardena in a fetal position. LOL!  And Miss Michelle and her ride-or-die Lady invited Derek and me to The Valley for Sunday dinner after which Derek and I joined Keith at Cantina and The Abbey.

My buddy Derek also invited me to join him at a BRUNCH event at THE LAVA LOUNE on Wilshire. It benefited The Feeding America Network and was hosted by my Morehouse brothers Benjamin and Brian (and others). The food was great, the energy was good (including funny man/actor Ray Cunningham and girlfriend Michelle); and a host of others I met for the first time (including singer Octavius. Also, my Spelman sister Charlie).
My L.A. buddy Delandis -a professional dancer in his own right - took me to see our mutual friend Derrick Garcia and his fellow dancers in the Fullerton College Faculty Dance Concert - including a number inspired by THE WIZ (featuring music from Diana & Michael's recordings i.e. 'Ease' & 'Brand New Day'. Also, there was a 13-minute MJ TRIBUTE). Afterwards, we went to TGI-FRIDAY to celebrate the young'ns. Derrick just started dancing professionally a few years ago... and he is really good! Look out for 'em!
On one night, my boy Brian came and scooped me up to attend The Official "I Want To Work For Diddy" L.A. Launch Party at The Aqua Lounge in Beverly Hills. POPRAH hosted. And I had to breakaway to Pontiac, MI for my Uncle Bobby’s funeral. He’s my father’s baby brother. Since my time in L.A. had been extended to January (and many of my funds were tied up in that piece to manage), I prayed to be with my family and attend the funeral of my Dad's brother (Uncle Bobby) in Pontiac, MI (but didn't see how I'd make that work when I can barely put two pennies together to stay in my L.A. hotel). But ‘earth angles’ came through and I went to Pontiac by way of Detroit’s airport to be with my Dad, his wife Diana... my sister... and the rest of the RILEY clan.
Though a sad occasion (my Uncle Bobby's funeral), it was so good to see the extended RILEY family in Pontiac, MI. It was truly a FAMILY REUNION… and even inside the grief, we found lots of reasons to laugh - simply because we were together. In fact, my Uncle Bobby's kids: Sonya, Bobby Jr., and Chris were gracious enough to take 'all us cousins' out on the town in Pontiac. Great times were had by all. 

Nothing like being with my family in what has been a (few too many days) in 'Hollywood'. But ALL GOOD as this ride nears its wrap (but I must immediately identify another steady stream of revenue around these here talents. *SIGH! <tired and determined!>

OH! Anybody seen "Precious"? I was thinking gut-wrenching lines like this are likely to take on 'Color Purple'-cult-level status: “My name is Claireece Precious Jones. I want to be on the cover of a magazine. I wish a had a light-skinned boyfriend with good hair. But first I want to be in one of those BET videos.”
 

PRECIOUS: ROUND 1 & ROUND 2

My boy Derek with whom I've been hanging a bit over the last couple of weeks here in L.A. reconnected me to industry friend Maurice Jamal with whom I had the chance to bond during his New York City run a year or so back - promoting the feature "Dirty Laundry" (starring Rockmond Dunbar, Loretta Devine, and Jenifer Lewis). Maurice directed and starred in it. Prior to that, we'd auditioned alongside each other for a couple of hosting opportunities... and we hit it off! Good to see him on the West Coast (his neck of the woods). Last night, he preview screened exclusively (with cast, crew, and friends) his new film/proposed series "Friends and Lovers" at John Casablanca's modeling agency. From my "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" vaults, see an interview I did with him a couple of years ago:"DOING LAUNDRY WITH MAURICE JAMAL".

I LOVE MAURICE! HE'S JUST JOY AND LIGHT! But he was dark at his HALLOWEEN party! Halloween is a big deal in L.A. I went to a "scary" Maurice Jamal's Halloween party (pictured). I went as a Cal State-Fullerton Freshman-turned-Psycho-during-Finals! LOL! Ran into great friends Robin Hood (Lloyd Boston); Basketballer a la DIVAS 2000: TRIBUTE TO DIANA ROSS-hair (Patrik Ian Polk); Run (a la Run DMC AKA Derek Lafayette); and new ...buddies Jason (as Cliff Huxtable in his famous pajamas) & his partner Anthony (as a FLIRT). Thanks to friend - a "slinky" Herndon Davis - for the invite. Also, great to see where new Diana soul-mate Dale Guy Madison seemingly combines a couple of Rock royals: Prince and Little Richard to regal effect. Lots of FUN!

COCKTAILS & KARAOKE

My girlfriend Ev had a get together at her home in L.A. Good to hang out with my colleagues on "Monica" (and "Frankie & Neffe"). And that, of course, includes my Shareen, my soul mate in managing long-distance love (Her Kenny was in town for a visit.). What a lovely night with good people and GREAT food! Everything was well-appointed and just so elegant like the hostess. She entertained the troops with the sounds of MISS ROSS and Michael Jackson... and we danced, shouted, and shook our bodies down to the ground... where approriate. My buddy Brian joined me. A good time was had by all. And afterwards, we joined Brian's friend LiLing and her friends at Backstage Bar & Grill in Culver City. We were right across the street from Sony Studios. For what? My favorite: karaoke, which always excites me!!! I did an ensemble number with the ladies: "Material Girl" by Madonna. Of course, it wouldn't be long before I took over (some gospel ad-libs to boot. Sorry Madge! LOL!).

ATL HOUSEWIVES MARATHON ON BRAVO

Since my extended stay doesn't have BRAVO, I was WAY EXCITED that my day of R&R (napping and doing nothing) could be scored by the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" marathon - repurposed on OXYGEN, one of the few channels the hotel has. I'm still not caught up with the whole season, but got to see a ...handful of 'em:

Well, the proof is in the pudding! MONICA: STILL STANDING is a BIG HIT! Highest rated debut on BET this season! 2nd highest debut in history of network (just a little behind "Tiny & Toya" which premiered after post-Michael-Jackson-death BET Awards). Tangible evidence that my sacrifice to do this great gig... (a la cross-country displacement/money woes/etc.) was not IN VAIN. People are actually watching! THANKS ALL! And PLEASE keep tuning in. 11 more episodes to go... And to put it in  perspective, 3.2 million viewers watched the Premiere and Encore of "Monica: Still Standing" - #1 debut this season and #2 series launch in BET history. 11 more episodes to go (every Tuesday night at 10pm). MICHAEL JACKSON: CHILDHOOD/THRILLER!!!

Being at "The Farmer's Market" for the first time since childhood walked me down memory lane as fellow producers/friends Shareen (pictured); Evolyn; and I eased on down the road to The Grove. A run into newlyweds Lamar Odom & Khloe Kardashian turned our heads, it was MJ's "This Is It" that knocked us out! WOW! The Genius of Michael Jackson on the big screen is a MUST SEE! And Shareen was first in line... just to make sure we didn't have any worries with seating. And we didn't. But I was right behind her... just in case. LOL! Ev's beau Gary even joined us just before the film started... and we were able to save him a seat. But don't get it twisted: the place was packed! I must go back!

Michael Jackson's "This Is It" is a THRILLER but look who's BAD in this photo. My phone voice/text mailbox and FB message box were overflowing with those of you who saw Ant on "The Wendy Williams Show" today. ED ROEBUCK GOODBYE PARTY (OR SEE YOU IN A-T-L)

My friend Ed Roebuck invited me to his going-away party in Beverly Hills. He's leaving L.A. for Atlanta. Lots of good folks were in the house - including Norwood who I finally got to meet and with whom I got to engage in an awesome conversation - about Michael Jackson (Norwood and I have many mutual friends). Everybody was sad to see Ed go, but so happy for him as he takes this big step into his WHAT'S NEXT? Also in the house: new friend, "Eyebrow King" Damone Roberts. He reported to me - HOT OFF THE PRESSES - that he's partnering with Disney which will install his franchise into its parks - so he can makeover little girls into Princess Tiana, the first African American, animated lead in Disney film, "The Princess and The Frog". Love the synergy of this since I had the luxury of hosting the event that unveiled the voice of Anika Noni-Rose and her alter-ego Princess Tiana - the incarnation that will actually greet little girls and boys in the Disney parks:

R.I.P. SOUPY SALES

By the way, R.I.P. SOUPY SALES. Brought my family many laughs and I had the chance to interview him and produce an award-winning-feature on him with Al Roker in the late '90s at NYC's Friar's Club. His passing triggered that long-forgotten, but treasured, moment.

Spelman College Museum of Fine Art has partnered with my blog "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" in the promotion of “Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities,” an original exhibition on view through December 5, 2009. As a Morehouse Man, I consider this collaboration with my 'sister alma mater' a total honor.

The exhibit 'Undercover' (detailed in the attached documents) examines the social implications of race, gender, and disguise. And the Museum emphasizes works by and about women of the African Diaspora (and well-known, mid-career, and emerging artists are a part of this exhibit - detailed in the attached documents).

WHY? Don't have a specific name, but I definitely change my image whenever I go to LA.  I really watch what I eat and workout intensely before I head out so I can wear outfits I would never wear here in Atlanta.  And I forget I'm somebody's Mama - just kidding, kinda.  I call myself a drag queen sometimes.  I love wearing the wigs/weaves & the short, short, dresses or tight pants, but it's a bit much for all the time.  I love my low-key jogging pants or jeans & sneakers look for day-to-day, but LOVE going full glam whenever I can.  The funny thing is when I run into people from my gym out in the "real world", they barely recognize me, but the gym me is the real me - no make-up, natural hair (scarf optional), old sweat pants and probably stinky.

WHY?

Even though Atlanta is very image-conscious, LA is completely different. Since I am an actress, how I look is very important, but not so important that I think it is what makes me - it's just a shell, something to draw people in.  I'm normally very confident, but I love the attention I get when I'm in full-glam mode.  And I love the fact that people enjoy talking to someone who's funny & personable, who they may have thought was just another pretty face.

WHY?  Music is my first artistic love. I studied classical piano as a child and fell in love with jazz growing up on the Southside of Chicago, while listening to the ‘Daddy O’Daly radio show’ with my parents on Sunday afternoons. Although there are dozens of jazz vocalists whom I adore, the lush vocals of Sarah Vaughan have always had, in my estimation, transformative power. She is (not was) the quintessential jazz vocalist, having the ability to transport listeners in a way that carries you inside of the song by virtue of her full-bodied interpretations of every note, every lyric. You’ve not heard “September Song” until you’ve heard Sarah sing it. “The Man I Love” is absolute magnificence pouring from her lips; “My Funny Valentine” and “Misty”—forget it!  She used her musical gift to do what Art should do—move an audience to its feet, to inspire and uplift. And even with all my musical training, when asked to sing, I typically decline. In utter devotion to Sarah’s sound and style, I thought, if I can’t sing like Sarah, what’s the point? Sarah Vaughan’s legacy of true artistry, vocal grace and beauty endures. If I could fly back in time, I’d land on some smoky stage in a Parisian hideaway, blowing all night til my dress is soaked and my skin glistening with sweat, singing nostalgic tunes to an appreciative crowd, with a slamming trio at my back.

So much of our identification with Janet stems from her being Michael and boys’ baby sister. Even as she worked her way through adolescence, she was the “good girl” or “the girl next door”. But then, when she found her CONTROL, she morphed into MISS JACKSON (IF YOU’RE NASTY) and we were sold… and have continued to buy her re-invented policy each time she goes darker, fiercer, and nastier…

1. Grace Jones

When Grace Jones sang “My Jamaican Guy”, I remember thinking that maybe she was the guy. My pre-pubescent self couldn’t reconcile what I was seeing and if it was a man or a woman. But I knew it was compelling. Over time, I figured she was a woman. But her masculinity purred through so fiercely that I could only bow at her feet and exclaim: STRANGER!!!!!!!

1. Kim Coles

So easy to get it twisted that my girlfriend Kim Coles is very much like her character Sinclaire who she played to convincing effect on Fox sitcom LIVING SINGLE. But hear me now, Ms. Kim Coles is nowhere getting her micro-braids stuck in the fax machine like her alter ego Sinclaire (one of many that the comic-timing expert has perfected over the years). Instead, she is truly a KIMPIRE – a woman that knows her worth and her brand. And has the bookings to prove it – including a run as the first African American game show host on BET’s “Pay It Off”.

1. Nina Simone

To hear her sing “FOUR WOMEN” or “MISSISSIPPI GODDAMN”, you might think you’re listening to Fred Sanford as the raspy, husky, baritone coughs those notes out. But to see her behind the piano or the microphone with a crown of tresses stretching up to the sky, you’re clear that Nina Simone is an African Queen from another time and place. And she is FIERCE! No wonder she had to run away to Europe to maintain a following that understood her or didn’t mind being confused by her.

1. Patti LaBelle

Patti’s real name is Patricia. And the first time that big voice was heard was in the church. But the world needed to hear her. And from Philly or wherever she is – with or without a mic, we hear her and we love her. But since she’s so shy, the woman we usually experience when she is in concert – at least those big shows in the ‘80s (fans growing out of her scalp and all), she was Priscilla – perhaps Sasha Fierce’s grandmother. And baby! Watch out! She might be flinging a lash and her four-inch heels.

1. Vanessa Williams

We know Vanessa Williams has the right stuff. But for all of her multi-hyphenated splendor over these many years, how hot is it that in her 40s, she’s managed to convince us of yet another ‘alter ego’ in her person: Wilhelmina Slater on ABC’s “Ugly Betty”. If I didn’t personally know how sweet she was, I’d believe her Evillene-in-Prada bit.

1. Kandi & the “Real Housewives of Atlanta”

So Atlanta-based photographer Derek Blanks has been doing alter ego photo shoots with all the Atlanta elite for years now. But on BRAVO’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta”, NeNe organized a shoot for all the ladies… and become the project’s director. They were to do what she said as their pose and their alter ego pose. Kandi decided to take the concept into her hands. She spoke of how she had to postpone her engagement party because a drunken driver hit one of her now-dead fiance's relatives. She used that as motivation to do something positive with the photo shoot, posing as both the drunk and the victim. NeNe decided that Lisa would pose as a good girl and as a bad girl. Lisa played along, and looked great. Kim refused NeNe's idea for her to pose as a black person, and instead posed as a Stepford wife and as a mistress. Sheree posed as herself, and as a sexy robber who wants "seven figures" -- a jab at her divorce. NeNe posed as a conservative woman at a strip club, and as a stripper. 

1. Mariah Carey

Mariah’s alter-egos – from Mimi to MC2 to “Imperfect Angel” to Butterfly to Charm bracelet to Rainbow --- all seem to spell Mariah. This, until her most recent “Obsessed” video when she showed up as her nemesis Eminem. Convincing though ill-advised. We just love you as Mariah! Keep singing pretty, girl!

1. Diana Ross

When Miss Ross hits the stage, it’s narcissistic nirvana. She’s in that round or center stage. She’s in beautiful drag – from head to toe. There’s a spotlight. And all others are in the shadows of her glory. Who would know the degree to which she is – quite simply – mom with five successful examples to boot? But it’s true. Snatch off that wig and those lashes, throw you on some Uggs and a fanny pack, and drop by Ralphs and see what the most successful female singer in the history of pop is most proud of: Motherhood. 20 #1 songs notwithstanding and a bunch of other drama. For her, it’s BABY LOVE! And now, she must shed all that diva-ness --- one layer further --- as she steps into ‘grandmotherhood’ through oldest daughter Rhonda who just gave birth to her first child (and the first grandchild from any of Diana’s troop).

This song ‘bout had me driving off the 110 South as I was going to San Pedro this past Sunday. It says so much of what I feel inside as I am managing this L.A. living for which I am most grateful as it’s a good thing to work on a project you believe in. And even if – in my case – I’ve had to trek cross-country to hold onto it (and I have to dig even deeper into my pockets and my core to maintain my West Coast temporaries alongside my East Coast life back home), I know that I am covered and protected and supported by something and – surely – SOMEONE BIGGER THAN me.

The evidence is in MY LIFE: I am working – through likely February - on a team (as field and story producer) to bring Dubose Production’s “MONICA: STILL STANDING” to life (It premieres Tuesday, October 27^th at 10:00 pm). I am also EXCITED that I am a contributing reporter on the "We Dream A World With an African American President in The White House" in the current issue of ESSENCE Magazine (Starting on p. 156, brothers - several of whom I interviewed - examine how the image of Black manhood is evolving). I’m getting lots of cool feedback! Please check it out!

Meanwhile, I’m having a blast inside my blog’s partnership with Spelman College Museum of Fine Art in the promotion of “Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities,” an original exhibition on view through December 5, 2009. (Spelman Museum Tour) As a Morehouse Man, I consider this collaboration with my 'sister alma mater' a total honor.

The exhibit 'Undercover' (detailed in the attached documents) examines the social implications of race, gender, and disguise. And the Museum emphasizes works by and about women of the African Diaspora (and well-known, mid-career, and emerging artists are a part of this exhibit - detailed in the attached documents).

But to put some POP in the effort, the marketing team sought me out to ask some CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network (and representatives of CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network) some questions - the responses of which I’ll be sprinkling into my blog next week… as well as the exhibit’s website.

Okay, so Ant played this new Mariah chestnut from her “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” and – like Janet’s “With U” from “20 Y.O.” – he’s declared this "our song". Of course, the crier that I am, the tears poured down my cheeks as I took him to the airport last week when he was here for DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING. (Truthfully this long distance doesn’t feel like it’s getting better. But now we have something to look forward to as I am going home for my birthday and Thanksgiving before returning to L.A. to complete the two months of post-production on MONICA).

In the meantime, we do what we can to stay amused respectively. Last week, my dear friend Zabrina (BET PR) called me in the 11th hour with a ticket to attend The Fox Reality Channel's 2009 REALLY Awards - chockfull of reality TVs best - including nominees and presenters Tiny & Toya - from the Dubose production family of which I'm apart these days a la "Monica: Still Standing" and "Frankie & Neffe". Also in attendance: Vivica A. My friends – new and old - have been there for me over these last days here in L.A.:

Got to connect with high school best friend Maurice Marable recently at Four Seasons (Beverly Hills). He was in town directing the new campaign for the new season of HBO series “Big Love”. Turns out he also directed Monica's campaign for BET. We are collaborating and didn't know it (since the content producing team is different from the ad campaign folks is even different from the crew that does the title sequence, who I just found out is my AUC brother Randy). We LOVE the synergy though! LOL!... and of course, the chance for Maurice and me to catch up as we're still quite close, but don't see each other often enough with our respective busy-ness.

Afterwards, connected with friends Brian, Li-Ling, and J for Fashion Week party at The O Hotel in Downtown L.A. And did I mention that Brian accidentally dropped my camera? Soon to be replaced. And in the wake of a stressful Friday (date changes on L.A. project and assignment tweaks), my friends Brian and Kelly called me off the cliff and out (on them) - starting with Zanzibar in Santa Monica. Then, friends Derek & Keith asked us to join them at Dragonfly. And from there, Denny's (after Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles was closed). GOOD FRIENDS (and sponsors) can protect us from the damage a fall can do.

From that moment, friends Derek and Keith invited Brian and me to a rooftop set in Downtown L.A. yesterday. Good folks. Good food. Afterwards, Derek and I capped night off - briefly - in WEHO. Another spot to which he took me is La Velvet Margarita Cantina. On this night, I jaunted over to Tony & Scott's place to taste Scott's father's pound cake & Tony's red velvet cake. Love my friends for providing me cheap and/or sponsored comforts as I manage my East Coast/West Coast situation.

And to cap off this most recent weekend, many headed to Brian's San Pedro digs for a cookout (and more football! LOL!). And then, Derek, Keith, and I enjoyed an evening at THE ABBEY – all in a weekend.

Well, it should be no news that President Obama is being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! Go Obama! Yayyy Peace! Since my Diana was the featured performer at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Norway last year (Diana Ross - Supremes Medley live at the Nobel ...), of course I’ve been wondering who would be the featured entertainment this year. Ross has a show ready as she just performed in Amsterdam for two sold-out shows (30,000-seat arena) for the Symphonica in Rosso. This spectacular is an annual concert series that years prior featured Dutch artists Marco Borsato and Paul de Leeuw; and her former and fellow Motown mate and duet partner Lionel Richie. The show was BIG – featuring many costume changes; the 40-piece Symphonica in Rosso-orchestra; dancers; and Diana’s amazing voice and catalog – including Netherland favorites like “Ease on Down The Road”. And one of my favorites: “Brand New Day” (also an homage to her ‘Wiz’ co-star Michael Jackson) -

Spelman College Museum of Fine Art has partnered with my blog "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" in the promotion of “Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities,” an original exhibition on view through December 5, 2009. As a Morehouse Man, I consider this collaboration with my 'sister alma mater' a total honor.

The exhibit 'Undercover' (detailed in the attached documents) examines the social implications of race, gender, and disguise. And the Museum emphasizes works by and about women of the African Diaspora (and well-known, mid-career, and emerging artists are a part of this exhibit - detailed in the attached documents).

Now back to the DIVAS and Ant’s and my fabulous weekend!

Firstly, you must know that IT TAKES A VILLAGE to have the kind of weekend we had, given we’re cash-strapped. But where there is a will (and a Scott and a Tony and a Sheryl Lee Ralph and an Audrey and a Tata and a Daddy and a Curtis and an Ernie and a Paul and a buddy pass and some frequent flier miles), there is a way!

So Ant got here on Friday night and we hit the ground running as soon as he landed since his Denver friends Robinson and Elia – AKA MAINCHAIN (www.themainchain.com) were performing at The Highlands in Hollywood. Plus, his best bud Paul was shooting the show. Ant’s flight was delayed – so we missed the show. But he got to see Paul and we all hung out afterwards at Robinson’s place.

On Saturday, we slept in. But once we got ourselves together, Ant surprised me with the news that he was taking me to a place we’ve both been resisting since the recession kicked in: HOUSTON’s – once our home away from home or kitchen away from kitchen. Ant had budgeted accordingly and insisted. So, we rushed to Century City to experience L.A.s HOUSTON’s like we do... and my mouth was beginning to water. For Ant, Veggie Burger, black beans, brown rice (though this locale only had white), spinach & artichoke dip, and a French martini. For me, since it was Saturday, The Firehouse Chili, cheese bread, side of fries, and a kir royale (just a drop of chambord). We did resist the key lime pie (as we were so full). But still we got our espressos with frangelica.

From dinner time to DIVA time, Ant and I segued right on over to the Saban Theater to secure our complimentary tix compliments of Ms. Sheryl Lee Ralph and our dear friend Scott, who is Ms. Ralph’s right hand, left hand, and the production coordinator for DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING! (Ant and I did budget to make a donation which we did via the ‘offering pans’ that the young students passed around. AMEN!).

The DIVA line-up was spectacular - including: Yolanda Adams, Brenda Russell, Tamia, Kelly Price, Faith Evans, Jenifer Lewis, Loretta Devine, Dwight Eubanks, Sam Harris, All-4-One, Frenchie Davis, and more!

DIVA DETAILS:

1.  Sheryl Lee Ralph sported 5 wigs (by Penny and Kelly). And 9 costume changes --- all by designer Tadashi Shoji who has dressed Sheryl for all 19 DIVAS. Sheryl requests that there be at least one leopard dress.

2.  Sheryl shouted out Ant’s boss Wendy Williams since Sheryl recently appeared on the show. She offered up a “How You Doin’?” at one point in the show and she played Wendy’s intro of her at another point.

3.  They are still counting buckets, but it is estimated that they raised $200,000 towards the fight against AIDS.

4.  Sheryl – quite the comic - called out the white audience members who were late – perhaps thinking things were going to start on “colored people time”. Since they were taping the show for DVD, many folks from the $25 seats got to fill in those prized rows.

5.  Sheryl also did a spoof on Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” – quipping “If you like it then you should have put a condom on it!!!”

And of course, Ant and I were roaming the theater lobby and the after party at LIFE for our own pictures:

My ATL friends Dwight Eubanks and Lamoh were in the house. In fact, Dwight donated a pair of high-heel boots (signed) to Sheryl to auction off towards the benefit. Also got to see Dwight and Lamoh again on Sunday at The Abbey.

This is Tristan Wilds of Beverly Hills 90210 and "The Secret Life of Bees" fame.

Rachelle Farrell was in attendance and interviewed on the red carpet. She's the first DIVA to agree to do next year's 20th Anniversary show.

Writer Dale Guy Madison, whose DREAMBOY cover spoofs Mary Wilson’s “DREAMGIRL: My Life as a Supreme”, had a FAB exhibit with all things DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES on display in the lobby.

Ran into Rodney Chester from "Noah's Arc". I am such a fan of the show and movie, I was really excited to meet him! As you know, I'm always running into Patrik Ian Polk and the other cast members - including a recent run-in with Jentsen Atwood at The Abbey.

Always good to see Jawn Murray.

My friend Derek Lafayette - who is working with DIVA Divine Brown - and I were so happy to see each other. It's been a minute.

And Ant and I were so proud of our Scott and Tony who worked the production of DIVAS. Also, our friends we met through Scott and Tony – like Ed Roebuck. And then there was Henry who donated his beautiful body to Sheryl Lee Ralph's opening number. It truly was a family affair. After Ant left, Scott and Tony invited me to their friend's white birthday party at Lucy Florence in Leimert Park. And to bullet a few things I did last week:

My NABJ buddy Brian (www.brimmage.com) is in town from D.C. He invited me to San Pedro where he's staying for dinner and - GASP! - Monday Night Football. I asked him if he was really my friend for such an invite. LOL! But he, Kelly, Li-Ling, and I had a great time - including the game but not exclusively the game. Great food (shrimp, collard greens, mac & cheese); wine; and lots of laughs! THANKS BRIAN! First home cooked meal since my Sidra left me. LOL! And on another day, Brian met with me to discuss BLOG/website upgrade. Per his expertise, he pointed out some info that could be the difference for my economic blues. Per some research he did, "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" has a little bit of an ad-friendly following. Stay tuned! Y'all keep reading, hear? SMILE!

My best friend Ern's cousin Adolpha (who works for Fantasia's reality show at World of Wonder) invited me to the L.A. screening of Man Shops Globe, the Sundance Channel's new show based on the adventures of a world buyer for Anthropologie. The set was held at the Beverly Hills store. Then, Adolpha took me to Chin Chin for a light post-party meal.

And my father, who was visiting his brother Bobby in Pontiac, Michigan, flew in and out of Detroit’s airport where going home he ran into Ashford & Simpson. And here is the proof. This pic was submitted for inclusion in this blog entry. SMILE! – perfect P.S. to an entry primarily about DIVAS!

While in Atlanta shooting "Frankie & Neffe", I went to a couple of "Real Housewives of Atlanta" events - including a birthday party for Kandi & Kim. Also, there was a Kandi performance. I haven't seen the show since its first episode (Hotel doesn't have BRAVO), but I'm getting emails, txts, and calls that I was seen a few times at the joint birthday set. I'm told the Kandi performance at Tongue & Groove ran as well.

Well, when I posted my pix of Kandi during current season's "Real Housewives of Atlanta" (per events I attended this past Spring), the news of her ex-fiance's passing had not broken. I extend my condolences to Kandi and AJ's children and family. AJ: RIP! And as Kandi and her daughter and AJs kids deal with all of this, she too is mourning the loss of her Uncle Ralph. Though I don’t know Kandi well, I do know that she has a brother named Patrick Riley who passed away in the early ‘90s. Whenever I would interview her when she was with XSCAPE, my name would always generate a surge from within. When my partner Anthony recently saw her (and mentioned me), he too experienced that. (Coincidentlly, I too have an Uncle Ralph who is dearly departed.).

But I do remember having a good time during those sets in Atlanta earlier this year. My chronicle at the time read like this: Of course, I couldn’t be in Atlanta without sniffing out “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” (www.bravotv.com/the-real-housewives-of-atlanta). My new buddy Lamoh was gracious to take me to as many of the sets as my schedule would allow. We went to AJA Asian Bistro near Lenox for 'Kim' and Deshawn-Snow-replacement 'Kandi Burris' (of Xscape fame and 'TLCs-No-Scrubs'-writer notoriety). It was a filming for second season. Sheree was in attendance but no Nene, Lisa, or Dwight to be found. Kim - sported a skintight, red haltermini thatunderscored her little pouch as well as her decorative, high-endredpumps (of glorious, over-the-top,ostrich feather garnish). She premiered her new single "Tardy for the Party" (Dallas-Austin-penned-and-produced "Tightrope" - debuted on the 1st season of the show - was not pro-tooled, nor re-presented, nor– Kim told me - made a part of her upcoming collection of dance music. Her actualvocals - as evidence by this new single -are washed down and into the mix/voice-altering machine. She may actually haves ome dance hits on her hands. Kandi - from my observation - seems apleasant, Deshawn-Snow-esqueaddition to the cast. She's sexy and sweet; doesn't drink; is letting her personality shine through (it seems) in a way differently and more engagingly perhaps than Deshawn Snow. It seems she and Kim get along and - per Kim's comments - that they maybe collabo-ing in the studio. Kandi was apparently privy (prior to Kim) to a huge rock that sets on Kim's finger now (a la engagement ring from 'big poppa', who seems back in the picture). Big Poppa and Kandi's fiance are buddies too, it seems. Also in attendance (and often on the blogs): hairstylist Derek J (sporting a kimono-style dress and pumps). He is in L.A. now competing on reality-tv's "Sheer Genius". Champagne and Patron were flowing. And overall, it was cool to see the inner-workings of the upcoming season, if just a snapshot from this one 'scene'. Then, however, Kandi (whose late brother’s name is Patrick Riley) invited me to her “Tongue and Groove” performance (www.tandgonline.com/). (Ironically, “Tongue and Groove” (the former Buckhead location) is where my platonic boo Carl Nelson threw my going-away party from Atlanta in 1995.) Kandi performed her old material from the days of Xscape. Also, she performed her new songs “Trade Him In”; “Fly Above”; and “Leroy Jones” (www.twitter.com/kandiconnection and www.myspace.com/kandionline). And “Real Housewife” Lisa was there! Still no photo ops with Nene and Dwight (who I know)… and though I did see her at Kim/Kandi’s party… Sheree (from whom I did get an invitation to preview her 'actual' fashions but I had a conflicting shoot scheduled that day. I hear it was FAB though.). There’s always my 5-week ATL run in June. Shout out to my girlfriend Lisa McCall who assured Lemoh and I got into the set. Sister 2 Sister’s Jamie Foster Brown was also in the house (www.s2smagazine.com/). She and I got to catch up as we had some business-in-common later that week (a la “Frankie & Neffe” and “Sister 2 Sister”).
 And there must always be a shout out to my friend Dwight Eubanks.He proved to be the host with the most during my stay in Atlanta. Also, we got to hang out recently in New York City where - after I left - he and Lamoh got to hang out with Ant. Plus, Ant attended Dwight's fashion show during Fashion Week.

STAR-STUDDED L.A.

L.A. publicist Lauren Tobin – daughter of my late, great NABJ buddy Pat Tobin - invited me out to Oz and Lynne Scott's Sherman Oaks estate which is home to the Jackie Robinson's Foundation's annual Jazz on the Green (www.jackierobinson.org). Ran into many of my favorite celebs and enjoyed an awesome round-up of musical talent. I tried to maintain my cool but I was really excited to meet them all. Sitcom actors Richard Gant (“Night Court”) and Harold Sylvester (Dwayne Wayne’s father from “A Different World”) were there. Too, legendary publicist Ken Reynolds (who has worked with everyone from Whitney Houston to Stephanie Mills over the years) was in the house. And believe me, I was as excited to meet him as those folks I knew by name like TV legend Hattie Winston and her husband Harold Wheeler (who is the composer and music director with the most – current credit including “Dancing With The Stars”). “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” co-star Tatyana Ali was there. (And I got a glimpse of Uncle Phil too: James Avery).My girl Shaun Robinson (from Access Hollywood) was there and bid on a big Michael Jackson collage. Salli Richardson and Dondre Whitfield – husband and wife, and new parents – presented and enjoyed their time away from the kids. Ran into my Dubose co-worker MC Lyte again. She even got on the mic after Sheila E called her up for a ‘freestyle’ moment. Lauren’s client is James Pickens of “Grey’s Anatomy” fame (His colleague Reggie Jackson was also in the house). And James’ wife Gina (who was in the disco group Musique as Gina Taylor – just before she married her “fine” husband) broke out in an impromptu “Dr. Feelgood” at the end of which James himself made sure that everyone knew she belonged to him. My New York City, saaaangin’ girlfriend Marva Hicks performed a brilliant set for the group – including Etta James’ “At Last”. She is good friends with actress Vanessa Bell Calloway with whom I chatted about her daughter Ashley who is a student at Spelman (Freshman) as my nephew prepares to leave the AUC at Morehouse (He’s a Senior). Favorites Brenda Russell, Patrice Rushen, and James Ingram also sang their big hits for the enthusiastic crowd which also got to bid on great silent auction items like ELLEN underwear. Also, another of Lauren’s clients Carmen Lundy, who is a world-renowned jazz vocal stylist, auctioned off some of her artwork. She commanded silence, wind, and standing ovations for her performances – including a song titled “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” (www.carmenlundy.com). Also in attendance: Chris Spencer, Kym Whitley, George Duke, Dave Koz, Marcus Miller, Stephen Bishop, Kiki Shepard, Atallah Shabazz, Greg Phillanganes, and that’s about all I can remember (but I’m certain there were more). Great day!

THE SILENCE IS BROKEN

Then, I went to "The Silence Is Broken" (www.thesilenceisbroken.com/SIB_PRESS_2_web.pdf) - a benefit concert underscoring AIDS awareness. The Saban Theater housed the event which featured my friend Eric B. Anthony (of “Naked Boys Singing” fame) who I met at my buddy Delandis' birthday party some weeks ago. Last week, we all hung out after I went to see Eric in "Naked Boys Singing". Eric's buddy Andre who was in the mix last week was also there at this performance. Delandis accompanied me to this concert which founder, composer, conductor Patrick Gandy made possible for me to attend. And what a treat it was to see Loretta Devine on stage singing in the lights. She's such a talent as is TC Carson who sang on a whole new level than I'm used to hearing. He was wonderful! And Laurnea, my good girlfriend Camille’s buddy, performed the stunning theme song to perfection. TC Carson, by the way, works sometimes with Lauren’s husband, bassist J.V. Collier who often plays with The Pointer Sisters and The 5^th Dimension. He’s now on the road with Bruce Hornsby. All of the vocalists were in EXCELLENT voice – singing compositions on which they collaborated – as writers – with Patrick Gandy’s lush arrangements! And Patrick conducted as well. And I was excited to experience it all with my friend Delandis who will soon be taping his DVD for kids. Stay tuned for more on that. KIM COLES

My girl Kim Coles hosted an event in Culver City called “Jazz In The Village 2009”. It took place at Veterans Memorial Complex. I wasn’t so sure what the event would entail but knew if Kim was inviting me that I wanted to go and support her. I invited my girl Danni but she wasn’t able to make it. Thank goodness Kim had a plan in mind: for me to sit with her good friend Ceci who is renowned for having dressed Ms. Coles and the cast of “Living Single” for all of its seasons. She is a great lady (also an AKA) who entertained and inspired me from the beginning of this function comprised of table rounds; heavy appetizers; and spectacular jazz music from Samantha Nicole and Talita Long – both of whom are managed by Burke Management (www.BurkeManagement.net), which also represents singer/socialite/eccentric personality Norwood. When I heard Talita Long sing, I immediately texted Anthony that she gives me “womanchild”. She has a beautiful, unique voice that puts you in the mind of Michele (“Nicety” and “Something In My Heart”) in its high-pitch but a little Teena Marie and Deneice Williams in its soulfulness. And perhaps a little Latoya Jackson in her whimsy way.  What further set her apart is she is award-winning actress Nia Long’s mother. And must have had Nia when she was 12 as she reads so young and childlike with a Marilyn-Monroe-esque sexiness that is most charming. She is such a free spirit and as she sang her own material and covers like Minnie Ripperton’s “Lovin’ You” and Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful”, I believed her and thought she’d be a great addition to Sheryl Lee Ralph’s “DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING” – if not this year (since it’s next week), perhaps next year (Talita Long @ The Jazz Bakery). And the headliner Dwight Trible too was awesome. Mostly, it was just exciting to see Kim who wowed the crowd. She and I have both been so busy (though sometimes in the same cities i.e. Atlanta, New York, and L.A. – at the same time), we’ve not been able to hang out in a minute. She’s soon to go back to New York City before I go and do “The Wendy Williams Show” to promote her BET game show “Pay It Off”. She reached out to Ant to support her for this awesome appearance… and he’s been supporting the best he can with her concerns.  I LOVE SYNERGY… and as she pointed out to me this week: She loves her some ANT! LOL!

DR. MARIO

I was invited to be a guest on the Cal State-Fullerton campus radio show of "Dr. Mario" (one of the new NABJ mentees I met during our convention in Tampa - www.calldrmario.com). He was quite the professional and I really enjoyed offering up advice to the many curious student callers & just hanging out with Dr. Mario, a promising journalist on the rise after he graduates next year or so.

Afterwards, I joined my fellow producers and editors for a karaoke celebration at Brass Monkey where we toasted the wrap of post-production on "Frankie & Neffe" - a ride we weren't all sure we'd survive but feel stronger for having done it - in excellence - together!

Beer and shots of yager (sp?) all around. We upgraded to Patron after this college-frat round. LOL!

But the activity was my favorite pass-time KARAOKE, which everyone knows I do day and night and night and day and wherever I can - from New York City to Manila! LOL! I dedicated my show stopper "This Woman's Work" (Maxwell) to Frankie and Neffe. But most importantly, it was important to shout out Ev, Shareen, Maia, Nichole, Liz, and all the great women without whom this project would not have happened.One of our stellar editors Barrett gives us some ol' time rock & roll! He was really good! And Shareen gets her groove on! WORK IT, GIRL. Here editor Steve and I pose for a pic. He and I collaborated on some “Frankie & Neffe” post and are now back in the edit bay together – working on “Monica: Still Standing”.

Maia was TEAM NEFFE (along with Shareen). I was TEAM FRANKIE (along with my Amazing Grace Nichole). And somehow – against many odds – my fellow field/story producer and I managed to shoot and cut 10 episodes on our challenging subjects. It was an all-hands-on-deck prospect and it took a village and a kingdom to get on the air.

I encored with an ambitious “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from my favorite “Dreamgirls”. With feedback as my indicator, I hit the mark. WHEW! Could’ve been disastrous. LOL!

And let me tell you: without our show runner and co-executive producer Evolyn Brooks – to whom I dedicated Diana Ross’ “The Boss” - FORGET ABOUT IT! THANKS EV! And now to our next level: MONICA: STILL STANDING!

Near the end of the night, Maia, Liz, Steve, me, Shareen,  and Ev backed up Steve Carr on "The Love Boat". ALL ABOUT LOVE!

PAUL’S PARTY & MAINCHAIN

Ant and I have been representing our household independent of each other as our friends celebrate BDAYs on respective coasts. Our girlfriend Mara just had the BIG 3-0 in NYC (Ant went). And earlier this week, I went out to celebrate Ant's best friend Paul at Downtown L.A. STANDARD's rooftop to toast.  Glad I went to represent! He and Ant love each other so and consider themselves ‘brothers from other mothers’. So, to be representing on Ant’s behalf (and now benefitting from Paul’s love directly) is a warming feeling. Other Denver native buddies (of Paul and Ant) were also in the house and equally nice, including Elia Mountjoy, one-half of the duo Mainchain which will be performing Friday night when Ant comes to town to visit (and for DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING – www.divassimplysinging.com). Meanwhile, I’m STILL in L.A. – home of many things TELEVISION and I’m still working in the business. Ant and I are brainstorming ideas to have my own show and some other projects green light --- one day at a time, sweet Jesus. This, as we contribute at high frequencies to our respective clients – from ‘Monica’ to ‘Frankie & Neffe’ to “The Wendy Williams Show” and beyond…

Until I need to be camera ready, I’ve been sporting a new look that kinda' happened from a space of laziness and depression: a goatee (of sorts). As I manage the latter (and took in the positive feedback), I decided to play around with it a little bit more.

Work is going fine here in L.A. as we post-produce Monica's episodes for BET. Admittedly, I'm a little down and isolated from being so far from home for so long... and I'm having a hard time shaking that blues. But the checks are catching us up... but not completely just yet as I manage East Coast expenses and have to put myself up here on the West Coast (hotel & car rental, EH!). But one day at a time, I'm somehow doing it (with lots of support).

Now, on to some of the social snapshots that have kept me entertained here in L.A.:

This past Sunday, I got an invite to see a cool play with music "Naked Boys Singing!" featuring new friend Eric B. Anthony. Also featured is my NYC friend-of-friend Tony Melson.  I met Tony five or so years ago in New York City through my actor/singer/dancer friends Erich McMillan and Kimberly Jajuan. I really enjoyed the piece which has a production in New York City that I never got to see – in part because I found the cast a bit homogenized. With this company, I’m happy to say that there is diversity… and Eric B. and Tony rise to the top in their roles. I was even more excited to see that the writers (in addition to DIVA wordsmith Bruce Vilanch) are also diverse, including songwriter/arranger (and performer in his own right) Trance Thompson, who did the big ‘The Entertainer’ number that brings the crowd to its feet – especially the way Eric B. Anthony performs it.

After the play, Eric, his friend Andre (another new-to-L.A. actor), and I decided to grab a bite at Bossa Nova. We hooked up with our mutual friend Delandis there. Then, we did a roll by The Abbey where many folks were out including my buddy Jensen Atwood of "Noah's Arc" fame. I had the chance to interview him four or so years ago in Indianapolis. He told me that he loved my interviewing style and found it to be one of his most enjoyable. Imagine my surprise when – after all these years – he came up to me, remembered me, and agreed to another photo op. My buddy Tony who hosts a fun dance contest every Tuesday night at Micky's in West Hollywood was also there. Our heads didn’t get cut off this time. SMILE!

It’s been bittersweet of late as my girlfriend Sidra has packed up her L.A. bags and headed back to New York City. Though I’ll see her upon completion of my work, she’s been such the saving grace for me here in L.A. We made the best of it by hanging  out every single day until her departure. On one night, though, she was to take me to R&B LIVE in Hollywood (I hear it's great entertainment). But her schedule didn't allow. It freed me to hang with my college mate Danni. She took me to Mani's Bakery (Hearty, organic cuisine!). Sid made up for it another night when - after I woke up on the wrong side of the bed (and subsequently got back in - fetal position - for what getting up created), she came to the rescue: Her friend Marilyn invited us to the birthday party of her cousin, L.A. Anchor Marc Brown. His place in The Valley is absolutely gorgeous and chockfull of details that made for a fun night. Perfect backdrop for uplift.

Another highlight from the week came with a PART 1 and a PART 2. My Morehouse brother Redic asked me to host his art gallery opening at his Eclectic Order Gallery Manchester (www.eclecticorder.com). Its proceeds partially benefited our alma mater Morehouse College’s Scholarship Fund.  Eclectic Order Gallery Manchester is located at 1514 W. Manchester Blvd., L.A. And Redic opened up shop with an awesome combo of spoken word, jazz, neo-soul music, rock, etc. And I just anchored the night as I do because so much of it was organic and divine. My buddy Ed Roebuck came out to support along with a number of fellows from MOCITI: MEN OF COLOR IN THE INDUSTRY. On this night, Redic - an artist; singer; songwriter; fashion designer; etc. gave the audience a sneak-peek of what was to come the following night.

"Redic Unveiled" popped off the next night… and I just had to see what he had in store. I also enrolled Morehouse brother Steven Foley, a filmmaker his own, to come and check it out.Great to see Steven and catch up on all he's working on. Stay tuned for those updates. And new buddy Derrick Garcia, dancer and choreographer, also came. And I bumped into Morehouse brother Charles Reese who is still starring in an "WHO...", an original web comedy series (WWW.AJAKWETV.COM). On this night, Redic let it all show. And the audience and the community of folks in attendance just loved it! And I love Redic and am so PROUD of him! Stay encouraged, my friend!

And one of my new L.A. ride-or-dies Javier was supposed to come on the opening night. However, he stumbled into a gig with KTLA: http://www.ktla.com/news/local/alliemackay/ 

It’s Christmas in September (at least for a good cause: TOYS FOR TOTS). And Javier was SANTA – making many of the folks in attendance at this benefit – held at THE ABBEY – happy to share their Christmas wish list with SANTA! He’s been in town just a few months and in addition to acting courses and auditions, he’s booking a lot of modeling work. KEEP DOIN’ IT, J!

OF COURSE, I’m missing Ant as I try to keep my days in L.A. interesting without him. But like me, he too is getting the chance to be out and about – including Serena Williams’ book launch party. There, he got to strike a pose with Kelly Rowland and others (By the way, have you heard her new song "When Love Takes Over"? I like it: YouTube - David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland - When Love Takes Over ...
).

And on “Wendy”, he got the chance to hang out with and support our girl Sheryl Lee Ralph whose ‘right hand’ Scott (not in attendance) is a dear friend of ours. In fact, Ant is coming to L.A. next week to see me and Sheryl’s DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING (www.divassimplysinging.com) which she promoted on the show along with some fab new wig looks.

And our good girlfriend Mara (as Schiavocampo from NBC) just celebrated her 30^th BDAY at a New York City space I recommended to her, Taj (www.tajlounge.com). My Itika even flew in from Chicago for the occasion… and Ern and NABJ girlfriend Sia also attended along with Mara's handsome hubby Tommie. The only thing missing - I'm told - was me! LOL! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARA!

Ant’s and my buddies Troy and Darryl founded Bangin’ Ass Artists (www.banginassartists.com). I’ve blogged about them before. Well, they have a show coming up on October 10^th that you don’t want to miss: TRINA BROUSSARD/RA-RE VALVERDE/RUSSELL TAYLOR. Check out the website for more info. These brothers are doing the thing to promote unheralded, independent artists with HUGE talent.

I’m always so proud of my friends when they are doing amazing things. On top of an already demanding career and family of husband and two-in-tow, my dear girlfriend (from way back in the day) Candi Carter is the creator of “It’s Hip Hop, Baby!” (www.itshiphopbaby.com/). I had the privilege of introducing her kid-focused, educational DVDs to star of my current project, Monica and her two sons. Lil Rocko and Romelo LOVED them, Monica says – so much so – that she’s agreed to say so. As Christmas nears, you may want to follow suit with Miss Monica… and pick up one or all in the special series which keeps the kids grooving while they learn their ABCs and 123s and more. Meanwhile (and I'm not saying this because I'm working on her reality project), I am SO EXCITED for Monica's new music to hit the airwaves and to see her fans (and perhaps even her doubters) FALL BACK IN LOVE with her!!! GO MONICA, GO!

As my return to NYC is still to be determined (October? November? December? Even January?): NYC CULTURE rules. Daughter of my late, great friend Pat Tobin, Lauren, continues to operate inside the excellence and professionalism of her mother (and the standard she had already begun to incorporate into her own PR brand). She reached out to me regarding her client Colman Domingo’s new stage piece “A Boy and His Soul” – which happens to be choreographed by dear friend of Ant’s and mine, Ken Roberson. Colman starred in Ant’s and my favorite Broadway musical last year, “Passing Strange”. Ant will check it out soon. I’ll hopefully get to catch it when I get back (if it’s still running). But if you are in NYC or going, make sure you check it out at the Vineyard Theater (www.vineyardtheatre.org/show-a-boy-and-his-soul.html).

So, it’s no secret that I love Tony Award winning actress Anika Noni Rose, who recently made history by being cast as the first-ever African-American princess in Disney's The Princess and the Frog. And can we say DREAMGIRLS?????? Well, she takes another dimension of step in the direction of TV as she has signed on to host the new season of AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange. It’s an innovative documentary series on contemporary life, art and pop culture in the African Diaspora, AfroPoP’s second season comes to public television in October 2009. The series is produced by the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) with which I have a little link through one of my National Association of Black Journalists Arts & Entertainment Task Force members (one of the dedicated, hard-working ones) Jacqualine Williams. She introduced them to NABJ – so NBPC could participate in our Tampa convention. Turns out that one of its programming execs Christian is an old “student” of mine from the days when I taught the New York Association of Black Journalists’ High School Journalism Workshop. So, the synergies here are really good. As the series host, Anika will introduce audiences to powerful stories about African boxers who journey across the Atlantic to match their skills against the best in global contests; a teenage girl who travels to Ghana and a Sierra Leone ex-patriate who returns to his homeland, each hoping to dispel prevailing myths about the two continents; and, Hurricane Katrina victims who find themselves refugees in their own country. CONGRATS ANIKA!

And though I’ve been behind the mic in the medium of radio before, I'm putting on a new pair of headphones as a guest on The Dr. Mario Show this week. (You’ll recall, an impression I made on XM Satellite Radio after I appeared on MILLION DOLLAR PASSWORD last year ("AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH!!!"): http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/GayleKingInterview.mp3  Well, I’m as excited to have been invited to be a guest on The Dr. Mario Show (“Your Prescription to a Better Life!”)). As I’ve blogged before, Mario is a student at Cal State Fullerton. We’ll be on the Titan Radio Station’s airwaves at 7pm on Thursday and you can find out more (including how you can listen in) via www.calldrmario.com and Dr. Mario says the show will be about me and my journey from Tokyo to Savannah and beyond – underscoring my insights that are applicable to upcoming college students and college students getting ready to step into the rest of their lives. Plus, he's got questions around networking and convention programming much like he got to witness as we met at the National Association  of Black Journalists Convention where Mario saw me in super-active pose. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences and reminding myself some of the tips that I may have taken for granted along the way. This, towards getting my CENTER back. My CHI is still off, though I'm carrying on...

And GOD continues to work it out via his many earth angels like Ant, Mario, Audrey, Paul, Sidra, Jav, etc. AMEN! <not out of the woods but breathing better, hear?>

Patrick Riley, a New York-based independent television producer, pop culture analyst and blogger, said he, too, was mesmerized by the Fashion Fair since childhood.

"Like Ebony and Jet overall, the images of the models in the Ebony Fashion Fair made this little boy from Savannah, Georgia tingle on the inside, much like my icon Diana Ross and her movie 'Mahogany' made me feel," Riley told BlackAmericaWeb.com. "The images were haute couture, European, chic, yet no less African and what we all know our people can be about - from the high-end to the low-end: Dressing sharp and to the nines.”

Riley also said, however, that in addition to the changes in the economy, the audience for the Fashion Fair may be drifting away as well.

“This economy is screwing with more than my bottom line; now it is messing with my Ebony Fashion Fair. And though some may consider the concept 'a dinosaur' in the grand scheme of how people of color are slowly but surely folding into the mainstream, just look to Tyra's 'America's Next Top Model' as modern-day proof of a door that opened on the shoulder-pads of Ebony Fashion Fair," said Riley. "The Ebony Fashion Fair experience is an annual tradition that many of our people look forward to attending. Moreover, it raised lots of money for key charities that impact communities of color."

 “WHY US? LEFT BEHIND & DYING”

For those who remember the late, great Kodjoe, the documentary he was working on, "Why Us? Left Behind & Dying", premiered in L.A. and NYC. Saw it and found it to be a palatable look at AIDS through the eyes & ears of inner-city youth. My college mate Danni went with me. And I got to see Kodjoe’s dear friend and the director of this project, Claudia Pryor (www.diversityfilms.com).IMDB FILM CLIP LINK:

KARAOKE

Afterwards, Danni and I went to watch a karaoke final at Oil Can Harry's in Studio City. My L.A. buddy (by way of South Carolina), Tony (who hosts the hip hop dance contest I’ve attended at Micky’s in West Hollywood) invited me to support a couple of his friends. I might have to get in the next contest as it’s for $1,000 but over 5 weeks of elimination rounds. The runner up sang my staple “This Woman’s Work”. Perhaps with me singing it, I’d win and take that much needed grand. Stay tuned.

SIDRA

My girl Sidra is heading back to NYC, which is a good thing for when I return. But not so good for the balance of my time here in L.A. because we have been hanging something tight this go around – especially as my weekly wages continue to fast deplete to the budget of a Der Wienerschnitzel patron (of which I’ve become a lifetime member. CHILI DOGS, anyone? LOL!). This, after many-a-long overdue bill gets paid. So, with the pennies that are left, Sid invites me over to her fly Downtown L.A. pad for many-a-wholesome meal (usually of pasta and great seasoning… and – of course - wine).And we watch whatever the appointment television of the evening is: WHITNEY, anyone? MARIAH in Central Park – an audience that I – in part – helped fill as word came down the pike that my friends and I should be in that audience to see MC sing her new single “I Want To Know What Love Is” (Remember my Diana did it at “Motown Returns to the Apollo”? Patti LaBelle - Motown Returns to the Apollo - 1985). There were must-see Michael Jackson reflections like Miss Jackson on the MTV VMA Awards. And on that same show, a self-indulgent moment of brilliance from Madonna (coupled with Kanye’s antics...  and do-no-wrong Beyonce’s graciousness).

And if not being entertained by the folks on the small screen, we have had a cast of characters around who have provided just as much of a show, but in reality. Sidra & I did stumble into an Aussie couple at the Abbey who showed up as quite the sponsors and lovely people. One evening, she had a crew over to watch HBO’s “True Blood” season finale. My buddy Javier popped by on one of the nights as Sid hosted Chrystale (known as “Ronnie” in ‘Players’ Club’). She is currently working on several projects in several media. Stay tuned as I plan to shout her out more. She’s a lovely lady. And on another night, stumbled into Vaughn (KMart's Joe Boxer and now-owner of www.the360mag.com). We were born on the same day (Different years, I suspect. LOL!). ALSO, Jae Joseph was there and he is working with L.A.s Fashion Week. Always a new cast of characters at Sid's spot. Good networking! Good times!

DIANA ROSS HANGOVER

Last Saturday, I headed to North Hollywood for Diana Ross leftovers at friend Curtis' place. You recall, when Ant was here, Curtis (and his lovely brother Walter) threw a DIANA-themed party. Well, we couldn’t look at everything that night as he has quite the collection. So, Curtis provided a stellar DIANA 'hangover' set that was just for us (and a couple of folks who weren’t able to make it the week prior – including Wallace Butts who works side-by-side with Miss Jody Watley, one of my favorites. Wallace and I hit it off… and – of course – I look forward to my one-on-one time with Jody! SMILE!

DINNER & RAIN CHECKS

Had to cancel dinner plans with L.A. bud Nate Parker the other night as the midnight oil burned in the edit bay. But came out of the session with a THUMBS UP from the big bosses. So, good that my reason for being here is landing for now. But I was able to make good on a dinner invite from new L.A. friend Nick (who works for THE GRAMMYs). We met at Aretha Franklin’s post-Hollywood-Bowl-concert party at The Peninsula in Beverly Hills back in June. We hit it off on so many fronts as it relates to our DIVAS out there. So, over turkey burgers at HOME in Los Feliz, we talked all things divas - from our favorite track from Dionne Warwick's "Friends" album, 'Extravagant Gestures' to - this is exciting!: the coming-together of Tamia, Kelly Price, and Deborah Cox as a supergroup the likes of LSG (Levert/Sweat/Gill).

BOWLING WITH THE STARS

Then, since I was near best buds Tony and Scott, they graciously invited me to join them for KiKi Shepard's Bowling fundraiser. It was chockfull of Hollywood's finest - from Dawnn Lewis to Olivia Brown to DJ MC Lyte. Then, one of my "Half & Half" favorites, Chico Benymon (Spencer). Also, Grey's Anatomy star James Pickens, Jackee and her ex-husband Elgin Charles, Kristoff St. John, etc. And a friend Nik (someone to whom my buddy Pete introduced the amazing work of  Momentum Education – www.momentumeducation.com - which Pete and I did together). Nick brought his students from Farmingdale State College (back in NYC) to L.A. to attend his friend Kiki’s event – so as to expose the students to their infinite possibilities. This event benefitted and raises awareness around Sickle Cell. And after that, Scott and Tony took me to Boy Trade at Dragonfly on Santa Monica Blvd – a hot, new spot (for Friday) where many of the ‘brothers’ hang out. THANKS GUYS for allowing me to third leg for the night. We also got some good time in at the Abbey on a Sunday I was called in unexpectedly to manage a quick edit. As my planned day to join Sid and Chrystale at Tischina Arnold's house had been distracted, the call from Scott and Tony to meet them (along with our Ed) at The Abbey was just the book end I needed to say I had a weekend. Again, THANKS GUYS! Hanging close to folks who are like family is key these days.

DIVAS

VH1s DIVAS ran this week with Paula Abdul as host and featuring young’ns like Jennifer Hudson; India.Arie; Kelly Clarkson; Jordin Sparks; Stevie Wonder; etc. A long way from the cache the franchise originally attracted - including DIVAS 2000: A TRIBUTE TO DIANA ROSS. But then again, these ladies are ALL in training - so perhaps this VH1s DIVAS was more like an AFFIRMATION or ASPIRATION. The first DIVAS (as branding goes) – however – is Sheryl Lee Ralph’s DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING (www.divassimplysinging.com) which takes place Saturday, October 10^th. And Ant is coming back to L.A. to attend this AIDS benefit with me (in its 19^th year of raising awareness and funds for AIDS research and treatment). Yolanda Adams, Frenchie, and Brenda Russell are booked along with a host of usual suspects – like Loretta Devine and Jennifer Lewis. I asked Wallace on my Scott (and Sheryl Lee Ralph’s) behalf if Jody Watley is available. She participated before in 2005 but would be GREAT to see her again in the wake of seeing her in New York City in July. JUST LOVE HER! And a birdie tells me FAITH EVANS is coming aboard. REDIC UNVEILED

My Morehouse brother Redic about whom I’ve blogged many times is here in L.A. And we’ve rekindled our friendship and brother bond since I’ve been here as well. I’ve mentioned to you how proud I am of his art (all of his art). But most importantly, I’m impressed with his kindness, joyfulness, and humility, which he sprinkles throughout everything he does and to everyone with whom he comes into contact. Eclectic Order gallery at 1514 Manchester Avenue. It’s Thursday, September 24^th at 7:00 pm and will feature night one of a two-night event promising high energy inside a cultural extravaganza. On Thursday, there will be visual art, Spoken Word, Jazz & Neo-Soul. GIVING BACK

Well, I must say I am impressed with a young Cal State Fullerton student named Mario Davis. He attended the freelance panel on which I sat at NABJ in Tampa. As I coached many on how to network to your optimum, Mario used some of my advice on me. He has proven himself enterprising in remembering that I am temporarily in L.A. So, he’s invited me to be a guest on his radio show that beams out to his campus. Mario says they are the largest enrolled university in California (even more than UCLA). Mario thinks that students can gain valuable knowledge from me alongside being entertained by my unstoppable (often inappropriate) silliness. LOL! MICHAEL JACKSON: LEGACY LIVES VIA MKW

In the weeks after Michael Jackson died, my Morehouse brother (and dearest of dear friends) Michael K. Watts received an opportunity to pay tribute to the King of Pop in a way he never dreamed.  The producers of Tavis Smiley's America I AM: The African American Imprint touring exhibition asked him to loan items from his personal music and memorabilia collection for a memorial display.  The exhibition recently installed items from his collection in an elaborate display at the exhibition's current home, the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center, helping re-launch the exhibit for the remainder of its run through September 27. Now, to know Michael K. Watts is to know that he has been collecting music and memorabilia of Michael Jackson and countless other recording artists since he was a child.  He always dreamed he would build a big gallery (read: shrine) to exhibit these items in his home for friends and family.  But he never dreamed this level of display and honor to a public audience. He is (and we all are) ecstatic for him. America I AM: The African American Imprint is presented by Tavis Smiley and celebrates nearly 500 years of African American contributions to America.  It is a nearly 15,000 square-foot presentation of pivotal moments in courage, conviction and creativity that celebrate the undeniable imprint of African Americans across the nation and around the world.  Featuring more than 200 extraordinary artifacts, documents, photographs and multimedia, America I AM: The African American Imprint highlights how African Americans have shaped American culture from the nation's beginnings through the present. 

This is exhibit is not to be missed!  The Michael Jackson display is located in the lobby-waiting area just outside the exhibit entrance.  The items on display include: a career-spanning wall of vinyl albums, including a limited edition E.T. Storybook Album; a collector's edition first prining pop-up display of the Dangerous CD; classic magazine covers including EBONY and People; collectible buttons and stickers; tour programs and concert ticket stubs from the three live performances Michael K. Watts himself attended; and many other collectibles. 

Anyone in the Atlanta area or who will be passing through Atlanta in the next few weeks to go see this exhibit.  It runs through Sunday, September 27 at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center, 395 Piedmont Avenue, N.E. in Midtown Atlanta.  For ticket information, directions, or parking information, visit www.americaiam.org.

 MO’NIQUE

As I’ve mentioned here, I Chair the National Association of Black Journalists Arts & Entertainment Task Force. My dear friend Zabrina (PR at BET) called me to see if our NABJ folks could support a couple of events coming up around actress and comedienne Mo’Nique’s new, late night BET show. Though I’m not in NYC or Atlanta (where she’ll be taping), I put a great group together for events in both cities. My Ant attended the New York City “Meet & Greet” at Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar... and he took some of his "Wendy Williams Show" folks as well as our girlfriend Charlie T who took all of the pix you see in this "Mo'Nique" section. THANK YOU, CHARLIE T (Remember? She did these pix of Ant and me: "I HAVE A DREAM TODAY..." ) Too, Ant got to attend our friend Dwight Eubanks’ fashion show. We look forward to seeing Mo’Nique’s show and further exploring ways that we can continue to support her – especially as she is being ‘buzzed’ about for her performance in “Precious” which the NABJ A&E Task Force will also be co-presenting in Chicago, Atlanta, and Baltimore next month. We’ll be hearing a lot about Mo’Nique in the months to come and through 2010. And a CONGRATS to MO'NIQUE (and my girlfriend Denise who is producing on that show now)! 

DREAMGIRLS AT THE APOLLO

Everyone knows I’m a “fool” for DREAMGIRLS! Remember when I saw it 5 times before it came out and 16 times before January wrapped when it first came out? And how excited was I to interview Jennifer Hudson before any of the buzz started when she came to NABJ in Indianapolis with DREAMGIRLS clips, a few songs, and her fun personality in tow. Well, Ant has begun to organize my WELCOME HOME/BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA which he says MUST include us seeing the limited engagement of DREAMGIRLS that is running at the APOLLO – beginning November 7^th. My birthday is November 19^th. Not sure when I get back home (if November and not December). But regardless, I look forward to seeing the show and sharing it with all my loved ones back home. Dreamgirls will introduce Moya Angela as Effie White and feature, as The Dreams, Syesha Mercado (“American Idol”) as Deena Jones; and Adrienne Warren as Lorrell Robinson. Time to shave the salt-and-peppers away from my chin... and moisturize my smooth and youthful skin... just so no one gets it twisted! LOL! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NOOT! I LOVE YOU!

As you know, I've been on the road for work. NYC/NJ is my home and that’s where my man Ant is. He came from our home in NYC/NJ to see me (bearing gifts: new disposable camera. See pix! SMILE!). I couldn't stop posing!

Best friend since 7^th grade, Ern, came too. We had a great weekend all around - from the moment they landed. This weekend gave me the chance to reconnect with Ern’s cousin Adolpha, who is in the business as well (working for Fantasia’s reality show now in addition to her work as a screenwriter and stand-up comic). She took Ern and me to O Bar in West Hollywood the night prior to Ant’s arrival (after Ern and I did lunch at “Roscoe’s Chicken ‘n Waffles”). Adolpha and her husband Nyk took Ern and me to Casablanca, a restaurant with 300-types of tequilas. And they invited us to Adolpha’s friend Jackie’s home in The Valley for a super fun pool party! We ate! We danced! And really enjoyed the energy of some good people! On the night Ant arrived, we met up with Ern and Adolpha at a spot in Santa Monica called Air Conditioned.

We went to my girlfriend Sidra's Downtown L.A. pad for rooftop swimming and brunch. Tony and Scott joined us there along with Ern.

My friend Curtis threw a Diana-Ross-themed house party with every Ross-rarity you could ask for. “Eyebrow King” Damone Roberts and his partner Ramon were in the house as well as our Tony & Scott. Curtis (and his brother Walter) were truly the hosts with the most – weaving all things Ross (from the 60s through to the new millennium). And we're talking rare videos, CDs, and glorious artwork well-appointed throughout their lovely home. There will be many-a-follow-up in the coming weeks. On Sunday of the weekend, Ant – an artist – and I got to meet up with my Morehouse brother Redic at his art gallery Eclectic Order which will be holding its Grassroots Grand Opening in a few weeks (inclusive of fine art, great new music from Redic – also a singer/songwriter, and T-shirts that come from Redic’s clothing line). He’s such the talented “Renaissance Man”! I’m so proud to have discovered his talent freshman week at Morehouse (I was a Senior – assigned to cast the Freshman Week talent show. I booked Redic along with four other voices to make a group ‘Just Us” (they called themselves). This way, more of them could make the cut and have their talents be heard. And beyond that first week of school, I managed to book them a handful more times before the year was done. And look at him now!!!! WOW! This is the same talent show in which I cast Rockmond Dunbar, freshman as well, to do a monologue for the masses. He went on to do his thing. Okay????? And he's stayed in touch over the years. I'm PROUD of my guys!!!

Then, Ant and I went to meet up with Scott, Tony, Ed, Delandis, and others at The Abbey. AWESOME WEEKEND!

Ant and I are looking at October for a return visit. Last year, we supported Sheryl Lee Ralph in booking Ledisi on her “Divas: Simply Singing” fundraiser that she does every October (For more information visit www.DivasSimplySinging.com). Well, since I’m here, we’re thinking this is a good time for us to get our visit in alongside an event.

For me to be adjusting to the West Coast (albeit temporary), I'm thrilled to have folks with Southern Hospitality showing me love: Delandis (SC) introduced me to Tony (SC) who invited me to Mickys in WeHo for the dance contest he hosts on Tuesday. Ran into another "Wicked" dancer Evereth (FL) who I met the other night. And before I knew it: We all had a lovely night! Thanks guys!

Did y'all see Whitney on GMA? (I got an 11th hour call to support her other upcoming interview but am in L.A. on assignment. Another close call to again be in Whitney’s presence but so far away...). New voice. Old voice. I'm sure rooting for Whitney and LOVE a comeback!

And since I don't have BET in my temp digs, what did y'all think of "Frankie & Neffe" - Episode 2? HOLLA! They are still kicking butt in the ratings as they did my own butt during the time I spent field producing them over five weeks in Atlanta. MAN DOWN!!!! CODE 10!!!!!
