"WHERE GOD LEFT HIS SHOES..."

dscf0259%202.jpgAnthony and I attended one screening at Tribeca Film Festival (www.tribecafilmfestival.org/). The film was "Where God Left His Shoes" (www.wheregodlefthisshoes.com/) - a moving and poignant story starring John Leguizamo as Frank. He, his wife Angela, and their two children are evicted from their New York City apartment and have to move into a homeless shelter. With many laughs and inevitable tears, this stellar cast impressed us much. But Anthony and I were most proud of his Momentum Leadership teammate (www.momentumeducation.com) Karen, who was a script supervisor on this film. We got to enjoy the movie with her and celebrate her afterwards. dscf0260%202.jpg
Prior to "Where God Left His Shoes", Anthony got to meet my friend Carol (PIC FROM THANKSGIVING EVE) at a screening of "TALK TO ME", which I saw some months ago and referenced in this BLOG (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/4/talk-to-me.html). It was great to share it with Anthony, Carol, and my Amazing Grace Nichole. Afterwards (before we went to the aforementioned film), we had a lovely meal at my friend Mitchell's restaurant Maroon's (maroonsnyc.com/). cjandpatrick.jpg
Anthony's friend Manivone came into town on Thursday - the first of what would be a handful of Denver visitors over the next couple of weeks. Anthony was excited to host his friends in his new home and I was excited to spend more time (and/or meet - in some cases) some of these folks as so much of our time is spent with my world of friends from near and far. In these moments, Anthony got a chance to connect to the folks from his comfort zone and I got the chance to bask in his "glow" which shines bright when he's with the ones who have known and loved him for such a long time. After they spent a fun-filled day of shopping together (and Anthony bought me some great clothes and shoes on this spree), he and Manivone met me at Ginger (This, after I threw my digital camera in the dumpster at home... and my awesome Superintendent Danny graciously jumped in and fished through the garbage to retrieve it). (www.gingerexpress.com/) Anthony wanted to make sure he got his "green rice". He loves the "green rice".
ashfordandsimpsonFrom here, we went to THE SUGAR BAR, Ashford & Simpson's supper club, which on Thursdays becomes an open mic night for newcomers and veterans (like Allyson Williams, Freddie Jackson, Me'lisa Morgan, etc.). On this night, it was Nickolas Ashford's birthday and we got to enjoy champagne and cake for that auspicious occasion. (www.sugarbarnyc.com/). Ashford and Simpson (pictured at last week's "Invisible Life" reading from last week's blog) are always such lovely hosts. Valerie Simpson - at a point - got on the mic and took everybody to church. My Morehouse brother Khalid, who picked us up from Ginger to take us to The Sugar Bar, made sure we spoke to his cousin, Tony-award-winning chroeographer George Faison, who I've been running into a lot lately. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/5/2/visible-life.html) and (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/1/29/only-in-new-york-city-can-you-have-a-sunday-like-this-one.html). Afterwards, Khalid, Anthony, Manivone, and I decided to do some open-mic of our own at the Karaoke spot (We're getting predictable, aren't we?): (www.karaoke17.com/).
Anthony's friend Manivone had some friends and family she wanted to see on Friday. They were in Atlantic City. Ironically, my Nichole said she was going to Atlantic City and invited Anthony and me to join her. We initially declined the offer as we weren't sure our schedules would align. However, once Manivone's needs came into the picture, we decided to make it work. Though Nichole would end up not being available to get us there, Khalid stepped in to be that difference and get in on the fun. We all hopped in his Mercedes for our road-trip and traipsed 2 1/2 hours down the Garden State Parkway to the Boardwalk. There, we hooked up with Nichole, who was staying with my friend Resa, who is a TV anchor (Teresa Berry) down there. teresa_berry.jpgShe too does radio via a station in Connecticut and is the sister of Nichole's best friend De De McGuire. I've reference these girls before as they are the sweetest. We've had great times in Atlantic City. They've traveled to New York to spend time with us and I hold them very dear. Patrick_s35thBirthday-Friday005.jpgResa opened her home to us alongside Nichole and her cousin Amira who was visiting from the D.C.-area. We all had different agendas and we were all cooperative to have that show up. When Manivone and Anthony went to hook up with her peeps, Khalid went to visit his grandaunt. Nichole, Amira, and I went to the Atlantic City Grill (www.acbarandgrill.com). Then, we all came back together and went to The Borgata to gamble. (www.theborgata.com/) I won $140. We had a great time.dscf0261%20247.jpg
dscf0262%202.jpgBy the way, The Borgata is where DIANA ROSS opened her much-celebrated concert tour that she's on right now: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJd_xZO5CmA).
missross.jpgIn fact, it was in Atlantic City at Caesar's (2004) where my friend Marlon Layne and I had the chance to enjoy one of Ross' brilliant shows.patrickandmarlon Fast-forward three years to the sold-out show at Madison Square Garden and there Marlon and I were again (each with different dates. SMILE!). Marlon, who heads up one of the many contingents of Diana fans that are out there, and I also enjoyed Diana on her first show (after her troubles) at her kids' teen center in Greenwich, CT. marlonandpatrick.bmpborgota.jpgAnd we're also excited to read that Ross is proving to be the toast of Europe. She's tinkered with her set list a bit - adding big U-K hits like "Chain Reaction" and "I'm Still Waiting". Also, she's including one more song from her "I Love You" project. It's "What About Love?" from  the Broadway musical "The Color Purple". Additionally, she's doing a couple of staples that we were missing during her stateside dates: "Endless Love" and "Best Years of My Life".
Once we slept over at Resa's condo (which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean), we all got back on the road to New York City (and Northern Jersey). Anthony had plans with his Denver peeps that night. I spent the evening with Tata and her new beau Jewels. dscf0265%202.jpg We had a lovely birthday dinner (for him) at South City Grill. (www.southcitygrill.com/). And Jewels had a great time. Friends and fellowship made this weekend a joyful one.dscf0266%202.jpg

Marlon was a dear friend of mine and I lost touch with him in 2009 when I moved to Charlotte. I searched for him for years even going to his house in Jersey City numerous times and I searched online but not until May this year when he came up.I am devestated but wanted to Thank You for sharing this! The first thing I did was play Ms Ross. Rest in Peace Marlon, forever in my heart. kzwatson@outlook.com
