"... EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNING... "

I spent seven days in Chicago last week. I was there on an assignment that required much of my time. Moreover, my Ti-Ti was out-of-town saying "Goodbye" to her 'Big Daddy' (grandfather) - one of the people who raised her. My prayers are with you, Miss Ti-Ti. With all of that, I didn't get the chance to hang out extensively (like times before when I'm in Chi-town to work hard and play hard).EDPATVINCECARL.jpg I did - however - get one night with my Chicago Carl and Vince (whose loving partner Earl I've gotten to know in the last few months as he's doing wardrobe for the now-New-York-City-based Tyra). Also, my best friend from Morehouse Eddie joined us. We did some 'Mexican cuisine' and margaritas at Adobo Grill (www.adobogrill.com). DELICIOUS!!!! From there, we weren't able to get into a "Why Did I Get Married?" screening for Eddie to see (www.whydidigetmarriedthemovie.com). So, instead we went to "M" Lounge (www.mloungechicago.com/) for a drink before Chicago Carl and I skipped out for a couple of hours of dancing hip-hop at "The Prop House" (http://chicago.metromix.com/bars-and-clubs/dance_club/prop-house-irving-park-avondale/138119/content). PATED.jpgOn Saturday night, however, Eddie and I did get the chance to contribute to the opening week box office of "Why Did I Get Married?" which Anthony and I'd seen the week prior in New York City at a screening with Tyler Perry, Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, and others. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/10/11/what-has-pop-culture-done-for-me-lately.html). patandjanet.jpgBut before, we enjoyed Spanish tappas, paella, and sangria at Cafe Babareeba (www.cafebabareeba.com). SO GOOD!!! Eddie enjoyed Tyler Perry's movie and Anthony and I went to see it with our friend Ern the other night - making #3. We're done until DVD time, but enjoyed it each time we got to experience the magic of that ensemble on the big screen. I was really happy to get some easy moments during my assignment as it demanded much from me. With that, I did have the chance to meet some great folks - on the clock and off - so it was all worth the trip.

antandmario.jpgWhile I was away, my friend Diaz had a birthday celebration for his partner Kareem. "Bamboo 52" was the locale (www.bamboo52nyc.com). Anthony was able to hold it down for us both along with our buddies Mario, Derrick, et al. Ant enjoyed the spot so much, he took me there last night for dinner, after we went to see Miss Tamyra Gray in "Rent" on Broadway (www.siteforrent.com/). PATANDANTATBAMBOO.jpgOn this lazy Sunday, which neither of us have had in a minute, we simply shared the day with each other at home before deciding (in the 11th hour) to go see Tamyra in "Rent". tamyra%20gray.jpgShe gives a different spin on "Mimi" (as does the rest of the cast on its respective portrayals) and yet Tamyra's vocals could NOT be denied. I've never heard her in better voice. She was resplendent!!! Afterwards, we wanted to say HI (You know I LOVE my "American Idol-ers"), but we would find out that she had an early call for a film she's shooting here in the city (and had to go).  PATATRENT3.jpgWe chatted up a few of the other cast members and went about taking solo pix before heading up Broadway for "The Color Purple" - thinking we could get a "Fantasia" photo-op, but she didn't come out that door (We did see "Shug" - Elizabeth Withers-Mendes). Then, en route to  "Bamboo 52", we were reminded that we still need to see Tevin Campbell in "Hairspray" (www.hairspraythemusical.com/). (We stopped and took a picture of the show's mural.) TEVIN.jpgWe also need to see "Spring Awakenings" (www.springawakening.com). ANTHONYATBAMBOO.jpgWell, anyway, back to "Bamboo 52", we enjoyed great sushi and a volcano bowl - filled with juice and rums (which we shared). PATRICKATBAMBOO.jpgWe capped off the night with a little saki and karaoke at 'the spot' (http://www.karaoke17.com).

jd%20book.jpgAnthony and I enjoy ourselves so much when we're together, we have to challenge each other to go out and have a good time when either of us are not around. Like the aforementioned birthday party, Ant got a bonus Janet Jackson moment when he attended her man J.D.s booksigning at Hue-Man Bookstore in Harlem (www.huemanbookstore.com/). His project "Young, Rich, and Dangerous: The Making of a Music Mogul" (Young, Rich, And Dangerous: The Making Of A Music Mogul) was celebrated with Janet and a host of fans in tow. Anthony went by to get his book signed and got a glimpse of Janet and her and J.D.s publicist Patti Webster. She's always so kind to us and has been for many years. CONGRATS to Patti and her clients J.D. for his book and JANET for her hit film.

On Thursday, upon my return from Chicago, Marqice and I enjoyed dinner and drinks at Dallas BBQ (www.bbqnyc.com) while our guys Ant and Jason attended a panel in town. MARQICE.jpgAfter the respective criss-cross pairings wrapped, we all got together for a night-cap at "The Ritz". PATANTJASONMARQICE.jpg

Perhaps this is a good time for comebacks. Troubled singer Whitney Houston shocked fans (in a good way, for once...) by making a public appearance at the Swarovski Fashion Rocks event in London last Thursday. Bobbi Kristina escorted her. WhitneySwarovski04.jpgShe appeared onstage in a white Valentino dress (hear that, Tyler and Janet?) at the Royal Albert Hall gig, introducing a performance by British girl group Sugababes. Houston -- who had flown in from New York but had been "hidden" in a hotel in the U-K -- looked great and seemed on point (even hitting a little note). Hopefully this is a hint of something awesome to come. Yes! It was a good week... and I'm "... easy like Sunday morning...".
