Some features to look forward to:
1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.
2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".
3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.
4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

"HOW Y'ALL DOIN'?"
My dear friend Marcia Pendelton (www.blacktheateronline.com) arranged for Ant and me to see the invited rehearsal for "American Buffalo" on Broadway (www.americanbuffalobroadway.com) with Cedric The Entertainer and John Leguizamo.
Afterwards, Ant got to reunite with many of his co-workers from "The Wendy Williams Show" at "Club Eden" in the Theatre District.
It was a ‘How You Doin'?' party - designed for one of Wendy's favorite demographics, ‘the gays'.
In addition to getting our photo op with Wendy and her husband/manager Kevin, we got face time with Wendy's sidekick Charlemagne and the show's Executive Producer Rob Dauber.
Also, in attendance, Wendy's stylist Debra.
Too, I got to see my Morehouse brother Jason and hang out with him for a bit.
Always good to see him. Nuvo was the drink of the night (www.sparklingnuvo.com/) and though vodka doesn't normally agree with me, something in the sparkle made it a great drink for the night (with no hanging-over implications the next morning).
‘Wendy' is scheduled to return next summer.

"ONE IDEA CAN LAST FOREVER..."
"BACK TO NOW"
Iconic ‘70s group LABELLE (www.vervemusicgroup.com) has gotten back together.
They came out to SPLASH (www.splashbar.com) to see their adoring fans - the ‘kids' we call them.
Ant and I were amongst the bunch. And due to friend and promoter Nathan Hale Williams and our generous and beloved photographer/friend Charlie T (who you may recall shot portraits of Ant and me last December for our 2nd anniversary - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/12/3/i-have-a-dream-today.html), I got a photo op with Patti and the girls on SPLASH's stage.
Their new project is titled "Back to Now" and promises the best of their classic sound coupled with what they have always been about: a contemporary, funky, and cutting-edge soundtrack (with Wyclef, Lenny Kravitz, and others at the producing/songwriting boards). Ant also got some good shots of Miss Patti and the girls. Those that follow:
Also in the house was my friend Patrik-Ian Polk who is promoting his film "Noah's Arc: Jumping The Broom" (www.noahsarcmovie.com), which Ant and I love.
We will see again (and take our friends) - now that it is in the theatres. (Charlie T took these pix too and ensured via her partner Danielle that Ant and I got home to Jersey - so we wouldn't have to leave early for the bus. THANK YOU, CHARLIE T and DANIELLE).
Oh! And LABELLE is coming back to The Apollo Theatre (www.apollotheater.org/) on December 19th - their first and only public performance this year and the legendary group's first full concert since 1977 (www.ticketmaster.com).
[And speaking of The Apollo, there's an open audition for "Dreamgirls" taking place there as they will be casting the starring roles of "The Dreams - Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson, and Effie White, and the casting directors are looking for women in their 20s.]
"HAZEL SCOTT"
Late great jazz diva Hazel Scott has performed at The Apollo along with an impressive line-up of greats from many genres - including swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul, and hip-hip.
And I've been shouting out my friend Karen Chilton and her fab new bio on Hazel Scott (http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=197245). It's the first biography of an important but overlooked African American pianist, singer, actor, and civil-rights advocate. And she hipped Ant and me to its release the other week during Fashion Week (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/9/17/blue-thats-the-new-color-children.html). Well, Hazel too was a Harlemite.
And our best buddy/choreographer Ken Roberson chose my favorite boutique "N" (www.nharlemnewyork.com/) to host this fete - pictures courtesy of Justin Reid Photography (Ken's cousin - formerly known as 1matrixstyle - http://1matrixstyle.deviantart.com).
It was so good to see many friends we hadn't seen in a minute - from Chris to Kele to Raymond.
And "N" owners Lenn, Larry, and Nikoa.
Ant and I even convinced our favorite Director of Photography and friend Will Miller Jr. (Will Miller & Co. LLC) to join us. He had a great time and bought a book himself.
But it knocked my socks off to see and pose with "my" Diana's oldest offspring Rhonda Ross.
As most know, she's a jazz singer and New York City realtor (www.RossRealtyInternational.com) - appropriate as Miss Ross (another Apollo player) has gone on the record as owing a great debt to Hazel Scott.
Too, in that special, Ross acknowledged many of those great legends - including Billie Holliday - on whose shoulders she stands (pointedly in her special from 1987 "Red Hot Rhythm & Blues"). Rhonda - as always - was so sweet and accommodating... and present.
CONGRATS, KAREN!!!
ROSS REIGNS SUPREME (AGAIN) IN NORWAY
With Motown preparing to celebrate its 50th Anniversary, there are no rumors on a Diana Ross and The Supremes reunion (though no one ever expected Miss Ross to headline a charity concert bill with Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, and Chaka Khan. Remember "Divas with Heart" from earlier this year: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/11/divas-with-heart.html). However, Miss Ross has been announced as the headliner for the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in honor of the 2008 laureate, Finnish peace mediator Martti Ahtisaari (www.nobelprize.org/). In addition to anywhere in the world, Ross too is beloved in Norway.
She was married to Norwegian millionaire Arne Naess Junior from 1985 to 2000. He is the father of her two boys Ross and Evan.
Sadly, Naess died in a mountain climbing accident in 2004 while in South Africa.
By the way, did you see Tyra Banks' homage to Diana Ross and Mahogany in "V" Magazine (www.vmagazine.com/).
She plays Mahogany's agent/mentor Carlotta Gavina, who transforms the character Tracey into the supermodel Mahogany.
What transpired in Diana's hit 70s classic is much what media mogul/supermodel Tyra does with her girls on "America's Next Top Model" (www.cwtv.com/shows/americas-next-top-model11).
Ant often says that Diana Ross is really the first ‘supermodel', though first renowned as a singer and actress.
Great job, TYRA! And as always... MISS ROSS!
"MARY MARY"
My Savannah homeboy Stacy Quarterman works for SONY/BMG out of Atlanta.
He invited Ant and me out to Brooklyn's Two Steps Down Restaurant for the release party of Mary Mary's new CD "The Sound" (www.mary-mary.com/).
Like Labelle, they've taken the contemporary route with their collection of songs this go around - and to good effect.
After they let everyone hear the CD, they came back to the VIP area and greeted everyone - even posing with Ant and me for the occasion.
I alerted them that their first CD moved me in many ways.
The song "I Just Can't Give Up Now" (an interpolation of James Cleveland's "I Don't Feel No Ways Tired") would get me (and still sometimes) right in my heart as each day can be such a challenge, but I'm clear that I must keep moving forward (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmQBshQ11uo).
Find out more via the aforementioned website and/or WWW.ILOVEMARYMARY.COM and WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THEREALMARYMARY (By the way, Mary Mary are proud to announce their Bath and Body Line entitled "Be U" - dedicated to young women at heart who want to celebrate their uniqueness and inner beauty. It's coming Thanksgiving Holiday 2008 to a participating Wal Mart near you - www.walmart.com).
"WORKIN' OVERTIME"
As I work to hold the freelance day gigs down, you know I'm doing more on-camera pop culture analysis and TV personality work. Here's the latest from my recent appearance on a taping of 'The Truth with Jeff Johnson' (www.bet.com/OnTV/BETShows/truth/):

Many of my other recent clips are below. But stay tuned for a look at my First Lady Fashion Show segment scheduled next week for CN8's 'Your Morning' in Philadelphia (www.cn8.tv). As always, THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT as I develop my brand and reach for the stars (... and try to keep the mortgage paid. SMILE!):

"OLD FRIENDS"
So many friends from my days in Savannah and Atlanta who are doing awesome things or who have friends or friends of friends doing great things. Wanna shout some of them out here:
- My high school friend Monique Thomas (who I got to see at our 20th High School Reunion - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/6/17/someday-well-be-together-we-still-together-kinda.html) sent me this tidbit.
She wanted me to attend her friend Elle Bailey's release party for her debut novel "Living Well is the Best Revenge".
Didn't get a chance to attend as it was in Chicago, but check out the book. I'm told you voracious readers won't be able to put it down. It's available in all bookstores like Borders, for example (www.borders.co.uk/book/living-well-is-the-best-revenge/1098910/).
- While Monique and I came up in Savannah, we'd sometimes tune into WSAV (the NBC affiliate in Savannah - www.wsav.com) and see Malena Cunningham - one of the most popular anchors in the city at the time. She soon left for other big marketplaces including Birmingham, Alabama. But now, she heads up her own publicity firm Strategic Media Relations Inc.
One artist she wants us all to know about is Jackie Chain, who found his love for rap music - growing up in the trailer parks of Hunstville, Alabama. Check him out via www.myspace.com/jackiechain.
- A friend of my Carl Nelson, Lamar Ariel, has a new book "Ready to Male" (www.readytomale.com). It's an exploration through black gay male identity. It is deemed autobiographical fiction written in the form of letters.
The work infuses elements of short-story and memoir writing styles to provide a snapshot of Lamar Ariel's ongoing journey to creatively examine rather than dismiss his personal thoughts. I hear it's quite a read. Check it out.
- As I met Carl Nelson in Atlanta, several other folks from our days have been in touch of late. Old industry buddy Sandra Rose (www.sandrarose.com) shouted me out on her blog recently. Take a look.
She pulled this pic of Miss J (from "America's Next Top Model") and ‘she' and I enjoyed one of Kimora Lee Simmons' recent Baby Phat shows. THANKS FOR THE SHOUT OUT, SANDRA ROSE!
- Another Atlanta friend from back in the day: Rhonda Baraka. We were both local journalists during my time there. Now, she has just completed production on"Pastor Brown," a film based on one of her screenplays.
It was directed by my Morehouse brother Rockmond Dunbar and boasts an amazing all-star cast: Salli Richardson, Ernie Hudson, Nicole Ari Parker, Keith David, Michael Beach, Tasha Smith, Tisha Campbell, Monica, Angie Stone and Michael B. Jordan. She too is shopping a couple of other film projects as well as a couple of TV pilots.
And currently, she is working on Jay Johnson Boot Camp - helping them find ways to get their message out to people about becoming physically fit, especially kids. Check him out on www.cmt.com under the "Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team" link and http://www.jaysbootcamp.com/.
- During Arrested Development's hey-day (as a producer at "Good Day Atlanta"), I got the chance to have them on the show several times.
Well, Aerle Taree is one of the members of the 2-time-Grammy-Award-winning group Arrested Development.
Well, as reinvention goes, she has a new book titled "PoeTaree: The Jurisprudence of Life".Her book is in Borders, Barnes & Noble, and Chapter's.
"NEW FRIENDS"
- My friend Fred from Momentum (www.momentumeducation.com) hipped me to a new street dancer named STORYBOARD (http://www.myspace.com/glideordie). In fact, STORYBOARD called me and let me know what he's doing. Check him out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ8eBtT2IeQ He's cutting edge.
Much of what you may see in videos started in his brain and with his bones - much like Shalamar's Jeffrey Daniels is the Soul Train-precursor (by 4 or more years) to Michael Jackson's Moonwalk for which Jacko should be credited as bringing it to the international stage.
Speaking of videos, Storyboard too is featured in Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy" video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVTyLqkez6A). He truly is one to watch.
- As we have continued to watch my industry buddy Maurice Jamal, he continues to give us good reasons to stay a captive audience.
His new TV series "Friends and Lovers" will be screening all around the U-S - including New York City (www.myspace.com/friendsandloverstv). It is a comedy-drama based on his first film "The Ski Trip". It's loaded with a sexy cast, lots of comedy, and tons of drama. He'll be at all the screenings. For NYC, Sunday, November 2nd is the date at 3:00 pm at the QBC Film Festival. For tickets: www.queerblackcinema.org

"THE SPACE TO TAKE EVERYTHING WITH YOU... THE WISDOM OF LEAVING THE BAGGAGE BEHIND..."
When I first moved to the New York City area (from Atlanta), it was Spring 1995 and my first gig was with CNBC (www.cnbc.com/). I was a producer for “Rivera LIVE!” – Geraldo’s primetime show which – at the time – used most of its air to cover the criminal trial of O.J. Simpson. 13 years later (to this week), I received some pix from a long-lost friend Christian Farr with whom I worked at CNBC. The pix demonstrate how much fun it could be to work for Geraldo as he would often times take us out on his boat. Too, he would invite us to his Red Bank, New Jersey estate for great parties and gatherings (including this one with infamous Simpson house guest Kato Katelin).
Ironic that also this week, O.J. Simpson is found guilty in a Las Vegas court of law for a new laundry list of crimes he ‘allegedly’ committed. This time, it doesn’t look like he’ll get off. With that, THANKS to Christian (now Chris) for such a heart-warming walk down memory lane. It is a reminder of a time that doesn’t seem so far away, but clearly is. Oh, how far we’ve come…
NOAH’S ARC: I mentioned it was coming and now I can vouch for having seen it and wanting to ensure that all of you get to see "Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom" ( www.noahsarcmovie.com). I laughed throughout (in large part due to Rodney Chester’s “Alex”). I cried – let Ant tell it – four times.
And I just loved all the DIVA references
– from Diana Ross to ‘Dominque Devereux’ (as played by another iconic favorite Diahann Carroll from “Dynasty” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaX43ebVdc0 ). [Don’t forget, Miss Carroll has a new book out: “The Legs Are The Last To Go: Aging, Acting, Marrying, and other things I learned the hard way” - www.amazon.com/Legs-Are-Last-Go-Marrying/dp/0060763264 ].
The usual suspects are in place to ensure those of us who fell in love with this short-lived franchise on LOGO are satisfied. But there are a number of other treats – for those who may just be enrolled into this special series. Firstly, you remember Claire and Cliff Huxtable’s twin grandbabies ‘Nelson’ and ‘Winnie’? Well, ‘Nelson Tibideaux’ (Sondra and Elvin’s twin boy) AKA Gary Leroi Gray joins the cast as the ‘baby gay’ of the bunch.
He adds some nice elements to the film. (By the way, do you guys remember this episode of “Cosby” – the “slumber party” – and how one of Rudy’s friends was played by Alicia [Cook] Keys?
She had short, closely-cropped hair and looked nothing of the long-haired diva of today, but oh so cute. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EbxalIlQEs).
But I digress. Also in ‘Noah’s Arc’, Tony-award-winning Tonya Pinkins is featured in “Noah’s Arc”.
And legendary singer- songwriter Phoebe Snow does what she does best: SING!
Don’t miss it when it comes to a theatre near you! For our private screening, Ant and I got to attend with our girlfriends Manivone and Cy. Industry buddies – from Karu Daniels to Bridget Bland to Ulysses Carter – were in the house.
SIX FLAGS GREAT ADVENTURES: Life imitated art a little bit as Ant and I joined our favorite couple Jason and Marquice for the 5th Anniversary of Fairgrounds Out at Night at Six Flags Great Adventures in New Jersey ( www.sixflags.com/greatadventure/index.aspx).
Basically, the park closed down and 'the gays' got to ride as much as we wanted to without those long lines.
It was great to see many of our mutual friends via Jason and Marqice as it had been a minute since we’d all hung out.
Afterwards, Ant had VIP invites for us to attend the nightclub Krash in the city (www.krashnyc.com/). We ran into our friend Toyce and a number of others at the Friday-night affair which draws in a big crowd.
Through Ant’s hook-up (a male couple he booked on “The Wendy Williams Show” who too are the promoters for this Friday party), we got to enjoy flowing cocktails; great music; and prime seating in the huge club which is just a stone’s throw from Madison Square Garden.
PROM ROYALTY REUNION & BIRTHDAYS: Last week, Ant’s Denver high school friend Adrienne came to town. She now lives in Philadelphia.
Visiting with her friend Phyllis, Ant and I took them over our good friends Mara Schiavocampo and Tommie’s Harlem place for an impromptu hang (before we segued to our karaoke spot).
Ant was excited for me to meet Adrienne as she and he were Prom Queen and King in high school.
And in addition to being loads of fun, Adrienne was extremely Queen-like i.e. regal, sophisticated, and effervescent.
Same could be said for our Mara who too recently celebrated a birthday that we all enjoyed at her abode. As she is the “NBC Nightly News” Digital Correspondent with the most, surely many industry players were in the house.
But as is Mara and Tommie’s style, we had a down-home, easy-going, fun time – nibbling on Amy Ruth catfish fingers and collard greens ( www.amyruthsharlem.com) and a special Harlem Sweet Tea concoction that tasted so sweet yet proved dangerous for those who partook as if it was not spiked. My Nichole came with a gorgeous posse in tow and my fellow NABJ buddy Caleb was there. He and I took a minute to talk 'turkey' as shop talk is permitted if a check is involved and Caleb these days is involved in developing some exciting new TV projects. There may be some synergy for us down the pike.
MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA: I mentioned one role I served at the Unity ’08 journalism convention as host of an event that previewed “The Secret Life of Bees” ( www.FoxSearchlight.com/SecretLifeOfBees) and Spike Lee Joint “Miracle At St. Anna” (www.miracleatstanna.movies.go.com/) after which I interviewed James McBride, author of novel and screenplay.
Well, Ant and I were invited to the New York City World Premiere of the film at the Ziegfeld Theatre (www.clearviewcinemas.com/ziegfeld/). We had a great night. My fellow Morehouse Man Spike Lee was beaming and quite gracious when we chatted him up at the after party which was laid out at Terminal 5 (www.terminal5nyc.com).
Biz Markie was the DJ (www.bizmarkie.com/). L.A. Reid and his wife Erika were in the house.
Ant and I got the chance to chat up actor Jeffrey Wright – alerting Ant and me of his humanitarian efforts via an innovative not-for-profit enterprise called “All for Africa” (www.allforafrica.org). His intent is to create a philanthropic investment vehicle capable of funding Africa-oriented entities such as schools, hospitals, etc. that operate effectively at ground level but lack the consistent capital necessary to sustain their work.
HATTIE: I’ve written about my efforts to see Vickilyn Reynolds in Hattie: What I Need You To Know ( www.hattiewhatineedyoutoknow.com). Well, Ant, Ern, and I finally got to check it out. I’d heard mixed reviews, but tossed all opinions aside when I experienced it because I LOVED IT! And I learned so much about the first African American to win an Oscar. A friend I hadn’t seen in a minute, Nicole Franklin, attended the show we saw (www.nicolefranklin.com). She is the current Program Director for the Harlem Arts Alliance (www.harlemaa.org/). And she’s still making her mark as a filmmaker. Remember her name!
Theatre marketer Natalie Clarke (www.walkercommunicationsgroup.com) invited us to Hattie and she too has invited us to check out “Basic Training” (www.BasicTrainingNYC.com), a new comedy created by and starring Kahlil Ashanti.
It is said to be a hilarious story based on one soldier’s outrageous experience in the U.S. Air Force, a culture I know all too well and remember fondly – especially “Tops In Blue” (www.topsinblue.com/), an all-active duty US Air Force special unit made up of talented amateur performers selected for their entertainment abilities.
Each year, thousands compete in base talent contests and the most talented move on to higher levels of competition. The result is an elite group composed of 35 of the most talented vocalists, musicians, and dancers anywhere. Known as the Air Forces’ Expeditionary Entertainers; the group’s main mission is to perform for military personnel and their families throughout the world. The enormous popularity of the group has also made them America's goodwill ambassadors around the globe. Kinda’ like “American Idol” but in the Air Force. (The Air Force is on my mind a lot lately as my prayers are with Mrs. Chris Bethea, matriarch of our favorite Air Force family which boasts one kid born in Germany [like my family (my brother)]; one kid born in Japan [like my family (me)]; and one kid born in The States [like my family (my sister)]. She’s sick right now. And though it’s been many years since our collective families have gathered and since I’ve seen her, we spent many good times with The Betheas over 20 years – from holidays to summers and all special occasions to our respective families).
MORE NYC THEATER: Also, my dearest girlfriend Marcia Pendleton ( www.blacktheateronline.com) is responsible for bringing “Fela” (www.felaoffbroadway.com/) to us, even though I never got around to seeing it. Now, she’s working on getting booties in the seat to David Mamet's classic comedic drama “American Buffalo” (www.americanbuffalobroadway.com), directed by two-time Tony Award winner Robert Falls and starring Tony Award nominee John Leguizamo, Cedric the Entertainer (making his Broadway debut) and Academy Award nominee Haley Joel Osment. “American Buffalo” follows three small-time crooks who dream big but accomplish little. Previews begin October 31st and opening night is November 17, 2008 at The Belasco Theater. For Group Discounts (15 or more), including special rates for students, contact: WTG Group Sales at 646.467.7393 or wtggroupsales@aol.com. To purchase single tickets, get production updates, sign-up for the “merican Buffalo” e-newsletter, plus much more visit: www.americanbuffalobroadway.com Marcia also recently saw a staging of "Shrek" in Seattle that is en route to Broadway (www.Broadway.com/Shrek_The_Musical). They are already promoting it in the subways of New York City.
LEIGH JONES:
My dear friend, publicist J'ai St. Laurent, asked my industry siblings Carol Johnson Green, Michael K. Watts, and me to invite some of our folks to join us for a private, intimate, listening event at 212 ( www.212restaurant.com/) – starring Leigh Jones (www.peak-records.com/index.php?page=artist-profile&name=Leigh-Jones).She is client and protege to Berry Gordy's son Kerry Gordy.
We pulled together an enthusiastic group of our friends – including my homegirl Kamara Milford – a TV producer here in the city (and she's become an unofficial correspondent for "A Day in the Life of Riley" as she was the first to alert me that Wendy Williams was shouting out Ant's brows on the radio as I was away on business in Chicago). THANKS KAMARIA (as always)!
our homeboys Marlynn Snyder and Lee Smith;
my “Amazing Grace” Nichole; my former NBC 4 colleague Terri Martin; and how excited I was to reconnect with my soul mate of all things DIVAS, Mr. David Nathan (www.davidnathan.com/), etc.
It was also good to see my old friend Jordan Bobby Brown who himself has launched a new blog for those on the market or looking for new, revenue-generating work (like me). It’s called THE JORDAN BROWN REPORT and is clickable via www.THEJBREPORT.BLOGSPOT.COM . My Ern and Tina came as well.
In fact, we kidnapped Tina to karaoke afterwards... and enjoyed some after-set songs.
And it was great to see my Morehouse brothers Milton and James who I hadn't seen in a long time. They both are music tastemakers in New York City.
And Carol's and my good friend Renee Warren dropped by. She's a publicist I've mentioned here many times, but I want to shout out she and her business partner Kirsten for their 15 th Anniversary of Noelle-Elaine Media Consultants (www.noelle-elaine.com/).
And don’t let the blonde hair and blue eyes fool you: Miss Leigh Jones has soul and a beautiful, bluesy-yet-poppy voice that put me in the mind of young Mariah Carey. She even does a remake of Debarge’s “All This Love”. She announced that she is getting ready to go on the road as Eric Benet’s opener (www.ericbenet.net/). To hear more from Leigh Jones, click on: http://web.me.com/kerrygordy/Site/Album_Preview.html or http://www.myspace.com/leighjonesmusic . BIG THANKS to my good friend Ronnie Wright, who provided the lion’s share of these pix from this evening!
RAPHAEL SAADIQ: My Savannah homeboy Stacy Quarterman called from his Atlanta office to invite me to see Raphael Saadiq ( www.raphaelsaadiq.com/) at SOBs (www.sobs.com/). Raphael has always been one of my favorites since his days with Tony! Toni! Tone! His 3rd solo project “The Way I See It” takes you back to the vintage sound of Motown and Mayfield.
But in his show, he switched between his songbooks from his first group; Lucy Pearl; and his solo works.
Architect of Diana’s “Upside Down” and “I’m Coming Out”, Nile Rodgers, was in the house along with many other industry insiders.
YOGA TODAY: Ever since I interviewed Russell Simmons a couple of years ago, he has – from time to time – invited me out for a yoga session. The latest invite came from him last week and was set in a place that Ant and I know well: The Alvin Ailey Extension where we do hip hop dance class with Tweetie ( www.alvinailey.org).
This class – called Tapas Yoga – is taught by Porschla Coleman. Ant and I got to participate in this Jivamukti-inspired program (including an inspirational talk by Russell Simmons himself). THANKS RUSSELL! And we will be back as YOGA is what Russell and the varied teachers describe as “… a metaphor for the stretching we do everyday in our lives…” So, it’s a journey to get to our destination sometimes… and we don’t always get there. Yoga challenges us to get quiet, grounded, and centered within ourselves; to surrender to our infinite possibilities; to understand that what is simply “is”; and to call joy forth through it all. THESE ARE LESSONS I NEED TO HEAR RIGHT NOW DURING THIS TIME!
ANT IS ART: Ant was hired as a model to be a part of a live installment at Brooklyn Artists Gym ( www.brooklynartistsgym.com).
Artist Raphael Miles commissioned him to stand guard over a book that set – spine-up – on the floor.
As museum attendees admired the various installments and happen upon this multi-media affair, Ant’s job was to give the choice of whether the attendee should pick up the book or not.
If they do, he takes a picture of them. I took some pix too from our camera.
Other artists in the show include: Catherine Womack, Antonia Miranda, and Tristan Walker Young. The show is called “Fresh Meat: Providing A Fresh Prospective To An Art Show”.
POP SHOUT OUTS:
1. Neither Ant nor I are big candy bar snackers. The other day – however – we were talking about TWIX (www.twix.com/) – which according to Wikipedia – is a chocolate-covered chocolate bar made by Mars, Inc., consisting of a butter cookie centre topped with caramel and coated in milk chocolate.
Being somewhat smaller in cross section than other candy bars, Twix are typically packaged in pairs. I mentioned to Ant that I remembered when Twix hit the marketplace and – as a child – how exciting it was to have a popular new candy bar. He wondered ‘How could you remember the Twix launch?’ He thought it was older than it was. Google led us to find out that Twix was born the same year Ant was born: 1979.
2. That led us to talk about Hollywood icon Paul Newman who passed away this past week from cancer.
Ant mentioned he didn’t have a sense of who Paul – the actor – really is, but that he – for sure – knew of Newman’s Own lemonade, salad dressing, and salsa. I know a little more of his dramatic work, but am a BIG FAN of his lemonade (www.newmansown.com/) as well. R.I.P. Paul Newman and THANKS for your organic and tasty line of fine foods.
3. Have you seen the new Mary J. Blige/Chevy Traverse commercial? The "Many Marys" TV spot features Blige as she crisscrosses the city in her Chevy Traverse against the backdrop of her 1992 single "Real Love”, reflecting on various moments in her long and diverse career. That reflection is creatively captured by "passengers" representing her at different stages on her career timeline. A narrator points out that this car has "the space to take everything with you, with the wisdom of leaving the baggage behind...Chevy Traverse: Everything you have ever wished for, and then some."

4. Some of the new TV shows are keeping me entertained. Before I could give it a chance to grow on me, my girl Niecy Nash’s “Do Not Disturb” has been checked out by the network (www.fox.com/programming/shows/new/donotdisturb.htm).
Thankfully, my “Ugly Betty” is back and better than ever – especially Miss Vanessa Williams in her evil role of Wilhelmena Slater. In last week’s episode, she had me howling after inviting Betty to lunch: “Look at us. Two women of color out for a fancy lunch. Isn’t it fun… girlfriend?!!!” HILARIOUS!!!
5. My good girlfriend Anise of "Listening Experience" fame (www.iamanise.com) is an extraordinary singer and has invited Ant and me to see her this Friday night at "The Bitter End" (www.bitterend.com/) - a stage on which I performed several times when I'd host and perform in a quarterly showcase titled "Frustrated Artists in Corporate America". Well, Anise is frustrated no more as she takes on lead vocals with a new band called "Dreamtime". THINK "Brand New Heavies" meets "Jamiroquai" with some mixture in between, she says. Showtime is 11pm BREAK A LEG, ANISE! SING PRETTY!
6. There’s a personality around town named Andre J – a tall, bearded one with long hair cascading down the back. Ant and I last saw Andre J during Fashion Week at a show to which Diaz invited us. See picture here. But also, see a bit more of this special personality's story here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpSU9p8czg8.
7. My fellow AUC/CAU sister Ytasha Womack is a SOLPOP PENMEISTER via her blog (http://solpop.blogspot.com/). But she is so much more. Hailing from Chicago, Ytasha's latest projects include her directorial debut The Engagement, starring Clifton Davis and BernNadette Stanis (Maverick Entertainment - www.maverickentertainment.cc) as well as her first book “Beats Rhymes and Life: What We Love and Hate About Hip Hop”, which she edited with Kenji Jasper. She produced and wrote the cult film “Love Shorts” and co-produced “Tupac: Before I Wake”. A guest editor for NV Magazine (New Vision in Business), her work has appeared in Ebony, Upscale, Essence, VIBE, The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Reader and The Chicago Defender. Look out for exciting projects in the works as this self-proclaimed “neophyte journalist scraping my way up the media/entertainment ladder” provides a voice of young people of color that she finds noticeably missing from mainstream rants.
Another fellow CAU alum from my Morehouse days Matt Morgan (who booked me to host the “Dance Theatre of Harlem”s street festival back in August) is working closely with his godsister, NIYOKI on some promo for her new album and video (http://www.creativefilmz.com/njv3/njv3.html). It is contemporary gospel and getting a lot of airplay around the country. Check her out: www.niyoki.com.

8. Chicago’s homegirl Jennifer Hudson is finally on the CD shelves. She should place in the TOP 10 this week. CONGRATS on your new project and upcoming turn in “The Secret Life of Bees”.

J-Hud was also seen serenading Aretha Franklin last year on the UNCF Telethon as she will be “sanging” for this year’s honoree Patti LaBelle as well (www.uncf.org/).
Speaking of Aretha, she is releasing her first-ever holiday album “This Christmas Aretha” later this month.

9. One additional SHOUT OUT to my man Ant who inside of our collective challenge to find steady work has been hustling to identify extensive ways to stay creative and revenue-generating. The aforementioned art show provided him the space in which to be creative AND a check. Same for a project on which he is working with his cousin Taricq with whom - along with a handful of Ant's other extended family in Brooklyn - I got to bond for the first time. They were all so hospitable and warm, but Taricq proved something special as he shared the vision of his career as an entertainment mogul, including rap and acting, but also owning all that he produces in that regard. He hired Ant (another great booking) to shoot his CD cover and create and execute the graphic concept around it.
Additionally, Ant wrote the bio which I got the honor to help edit. This, as we both support Taricq to take his game to the next level.
His stage name is "Mr. Goodstuff". He is a multi-talented, independent, hip hop recording artist, producer and entrepreneur. In his neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn, he is best known by the names "Taricq" and "Murdock" ('Doc' for short). This true Brooklyn native grw up as an all-star basketball player - side-tracked by street hustling as a quick means of making money. After his dreams around a promising athletic career came to a screeching halt, he soon began to learn the consequences of dirty money. By traveling the world and visiting family in Denver, Atlanta, Paris, and Gabon, Mr. Goodstuff awakened to a new dream and a strong appreciation for many different styles of music. Through Mr. Goodstuff's new passion for melody and beat, his purpose as an artist began to shine through brilliantly. He explains that seeing the world helped him see the good in people and the good in himself. That epiphany - in part - is why he chose the name Mr. Goodstuff. More pointedly, "Mr." is a sign of respect and manhood. "Goodstuff" is an acronym: Grand, Overrule, Oppression, Dedication, Strive, Time (is money), Universal music), Fearless and Fortunate. Inside his new branding and zest for all things infinitely possible, Mr. Goodstuff started out writing about his experiences and realized he had the skills and access to technology that would take his voice to the next level.
Inspired by the self-made opportunity to be his own boss, Mr. Goodstuff completed, produced, and distributed his first independent project "I Gotta Eat" (2007). Since then, Mr. Goodstuff has elevated his entrepreneurial game to include founding Multi-vision Ent, a new entertainment company -- a record label as well as a company that oversees audio & media production as well as distribution. Not resting on his laurels or his achievements thus far, he is launching an actingcareer via television's mainstream as well. He debuts as a background actor in the 2008 ABC Fall premiere of "Life on Mars". Although Mr. Goodstuff's role within the new series may be minor, his talent and ability to network makes this a major move for this rising star.
(PLUS, Lisa Bonet is in it!!! And I love her - yet another Huxtable!!!). Upcoming projects slated for 2008 include a new CD, "Life of a Hustler", along with accompanying music videos and a few independent films currently in progress. CONGRATS TO YOU, MR. GOODSTUFF. SO PROUD OF YOU!

(BLUE) "THAT'S THE NEW COLOR, CHILDREN"
Shout out to my girl Karen for sending the most thoughtful card to me the other day. I was feeling a little down and thought something in the mail could cheer me up. Of course, I was talking about a check. LOL! No, there wasn't a check. Instead, something that filled my soul.
Ant and I call them "rainy day notes"...and they typically show up when you least expect them and when you most need them. And the fact that the content inside her card "mourned' what I have been going through in the wake of losing my camera a couple of weeks ago made it that much more special (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/26/one-lost-camera-dont-stop-no-blog-entry.html ). Also, she took the time to honor all things joy, love, and life via the many things we have in common - old, new, borrowed, and BLUE! Suddenly, a la "The Wiz" (and the revolving kaleidoscope that is the 'emerald city sequence': BLUE (because of Karen) is a joyful color, feeling, and mood that carried me to new heights on that day… and everyday that followed – perfect timing for Fashion Week ( www.mbfashionweek.com/newyork/ ); Urbanworld Film Festival ( www.urbanworld.com/ ); and everything else that was going down this week. I must admit, it’s begun to blur… but because I had such great friends like Diaz...
Manivone...
Cynthia...
Vince...
Ern...
Mara... and Tish, who sent me the pic of she, my best friend Eddie and our fellow Morehouse brother and friend Brad – all of whom gathered in Washington DC for some social time
[Eddie made sure Tish sent the pic since many of the images with him in them from his visit to NYC were lost with the camera ]. They all ensured that I had photographs to chronicle my ‘mourning’ period pending my next purchase (Patrick to the mailbox a la Celie from “The Color Purple”: “… anything for me?”).
In fact, there are so many pix, they will be my reminders of where I’ve been over the last couple of weeks. And like sitting with someone who just put a scrapbook together, I will narrate it:
This is my Nichole and me on the night of Bill Clinton’s DNC speech (www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_6IXjUNP84 ). Ant was out of town and Nichole and I were attempting to have a quick bite at my buddy Brian’s Harlem bistro Native – so we could catch up (It had been a minute). This, before seeing the musical production “Hattie… What I Need You To Know” (www.theatermania.com or call 212/352-3101). For more information: www.HattieWhatINeedYouToKnow.com.
Well, our chat would end up pre-empting our Hattie moment which we’re still committed to check out. But we did get some wine at a cute new Harlem spot Nectar Wine Bar where Amy Ruth’s Michael Vann ( www.amyruthsharlem.com ) graciously kept our glasses full. We talked all things politics, pop culture, and people – especially since we were missing President Clinton, my buddy.
Ant soon came back from his weeklong vacation in Denver. We didn’t have enough time to catch an event with Terrence Howard to which we were invited by my Savannah homeboy Stacy Quarterman (promoting Terrence’s new CD: www.myspace.com/terrencehoward). Instead, we joined his good girlfriend Deb (stylist for Wendy Williams) at Caroline’s (www.carolines.com) where Miss Wendy hosts a Wednesday night of comedy. In addition to a line-up of hilarious talent including Lady Roz G (www.myspace.com/ladyrozg or www.comedianroz.com).
I also ran into my fellow homegirl from Tokyo (I was born there) DJ SEIKO (I didn’t know her from over there, but she and I were both born on Air Force Bases in Tokyo. I was born on Tachikawa AFB).
And then, we ran into author of “Mike Tyson Tried To Kill My Daddy” Mitchell Rose who was selling his tome out of his van (www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=16433&more=1 ).
We too saw a couple of my fellow National Association of Black Journalists sistahs Sherry and Kirsten.
All of this happened on just one block in Times Square.
On Thursday, Ant, Ern, and I attended a pre-Fashion Week party (www.ISTYLESTARZENTERTAINMENT.COM) at Glass Lounge (www.glassloungenyc.com/) where we saw lots of our buddies like George.
The club sets near where “Ugly Betty” (www.abc.go.com/primetime/uglybetty/index) was filming. We joked that we felt like we were going to run into Ugly Betty herself (or hopefully Vanessa Williams). Well, it happened. Ant, Ern, and I were just walking down the street… and America Ferrera was being escorted by her handlers to her scene. Ern and Ant caught it first. When I caught on, we turned around and followed her.
Eventually I called her name “America” and she turned around and graciously spoke. Her folks wouldn’t allow a picture with us but we snapped one anyway. Only in New York City.
(By the way, remember that episode of 'Ugly Betty' that touched me on Mother's Day by way of an Ashford & Simpson composition "Didn't You Know You'd Have To Cry Sometime?" by Gladys Knight - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/11/didnt-you-know-youd-have-to-cry-sometime.html? Well, you'll recall I LOVED the Diana Ross version and there's FINALLY an upload on YOU TUBE that I can share here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lU2SeS_ylQ ). Afterwards, we had a bite at our spot Cafeteria ( www.cafeteriagroup.com/ ) where we stumbled into DIVA Manager with the most Benny Medina (most recent client Mariah Carey) and he not only spoke (as he, Ant, and I have collabo’d on some development projects), but he offered Ant and me tix for Fashion Rocks the next night (www.fashionrocks.com/ ).
By now, you’ve all seen it. But Ant and I had a great time with Beyonce serving her best Etta James (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7kEFvbOQo4) while her sister Solange stole the show with her new-but-vintage sound(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p212aU6GPgM ).
Afterwards we joined our buddy Malachi Rivers and a host of his friends at our favorite Dallas BBQ before a night of Fashion Show aftersets.
See my good girlfriend Mara Schiavocampo, Digital Correspondent for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams (www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21688725/). Here she is in Beijing. Then, it was Denver at the DNC (She and Ant got to hang out for a little bit). We’d been missing her as she’d been on the road for over a month. But upon her return, she and her husband Tommie invited Ern, Ant, and me over to their Harlem brownstone for a night of games – scored by an episode of “The Cosby Show” in which Claire is rejecting Cliff’s competitiveness in “Monopoly” (just as Mara began to chastize her Tommie on his board game intensity).
We felt so Huxtable that night.
(Speaking of the Huxtables, my Spelman sister Karen Ceesay was featured on the new sitcom "Somebodies" on BET (www.somebodiesmovie.net/site/castbios.html ). This is the first original scripted show that BET is producing, plus it is the first in an entire fall line-up of original programming on BET. CONGRATS KAREN!).
And speaking of sitcoms, the next day Carl, Ant, and I attended a fashion show to which my friend Diaz invited me.
It was Jose Duran (www.joseduran.net/) at HK Lounge (www.hkhellskitchen.com/). Jaslene of “America’s Next Top Model” fame was in the show… and served the children.
We even ran into our hip hop dance instructor Tweetie who was sporting an awesome, short do.
Afterwards, Ant had business in Brooklyn.
So, my platonic boo Carl took me to brunch at Pastis (http://pastisny.com/) where one of my pop culture obsessions took fold.
I ran into Thelma’s first fiance Larry from “Good Times” (Carl Franklin) and just had to let him know how much of a fan I am of the show and him. Remember “Love In The Ghetto”? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtYCMTJPMHg) and (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeJHXdWw91Y).
Afterwards, Carl and I went to the Gansevoort ---- patio and rooftop ---- for lovely social time (www.hotelgansevoort.com/).
There, we ran into my Morehouse brother Welborn Preston who you may recall invited me to Atlanta last December to meet up with one of his clients
(http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/12/16/extreme-makeover.html).
Well, he’s got another client in Chris Willis (www.myspace.com/chriswillismusic), a popular house singer who I had the opportunity to meet. And he and Preston invited Ant and me to the studio to hear them work on some material with popular singer Ultra Nate (www.ultranate.com/) whose “Free” everyone should know (www.youtube.com/watch?v=otaG82x78Zg).
The producer Dave Darlington (www.davedarlington.com) whose Bass Hit Recording Studio in New York City was the home of this session. He shared that he played bass on “my” Diana Ross’ “Summertime” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcqG6hNVSDw ) from her 1987 “Red Hot Rhythm & Blues” project.
Ant and I just loved being in the studio. The visit was quite the muse for that sidelight of mine that is itching to place my voice on the spotlight of somebody's recording.
I ended up having business in Washington DC which provided me the opportunity to see two dear friends: My “Amazing Grace” Lisa Goodnight and my Savannah homeboy James Davis.
Lisa caught me up on all things ‘latina’ (She’s not), including author Junot Diaz (www.junotdiaz.com).
My Morehouse brother Chris McDonald’s brother Rodney happened upon us as we nibbled on crabmeat quesadillas at Union Station Restaurant (www.unionstationrestaurant.com/ ).
He says he recognized me from a picture he saw of Chris and me in my blog.
As Fashion Week continued, Ant and I did Russell Simmons’ Argyle Agriculture line’s fashion show (www.russellsimmons.com/) where Ant and I ran into once-“Scary Spice”/now-stylish-Mel-B. She and her husband are so sweet (or should I say... spicy!?).
Too, we hung out at the Launch Party for the BET/Urbanworld Film Festival at Hudson River Café (www.hudsonrivercafe.com/).
There, we got to hang out with my “Amazing Grace” Nichole, Miss Cynthia (who provided me with the pix from our brunch at Maroon’s (www.maroonsnyc.com/) last week, by the way), Michelle, and a host of others --- like Mr. BJ Coleman, who always calls me “Riley”.
He is a blog reader.
Also, there was the cutest Target party which we attended, thanks to my friend Diaz. It celebrated the launch of the Bullseye Bodegas (www.sites.target.com/site/en/spot/page.jsp?title=bullseye_bodega ).
Ant’s “Wendy Williams” colleague Michael was there.
Always good to see him.
Former Destiny’s Child group member Latoya was in the house.
But none excited as much as Mr. and Mrs. Seinfeld.
And they seemed excited to be there for their roll-through.
Then, Ant and I got the hook up from my nephew and his former colleagues at HBO for Urbanworld Film Festival (Oh, how the tide has turned. Beautifully!).
We saw so many great films like “This Is The Life” by my friend Ava Duvernay; Sister’s Keeper (w/”Girlfriends” guest Kent Faulcon), and Lee Daniels’ “Tennessee” - www.leedanielsentertainment.com/tennessee/ -(and Miss Cannon came to the screening).
We got to see the film “Phantom Punch” (www.imdb.com/title/tt1131747/) on Sonny Liston that starred Ving Rames and was directed by Robert Townsend who told us about this project when we saw him a couple of months ago (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/22/in-a-world-of-fading-treasures-love-is-the-greatest-pleasure.html).
Also, my Tracey Moore-Marable oversaw an awesome panel at HBO which featured readings of scenes from works-in-progress (www.thespiritedactor.com/).
It was quite the inspired session.
And Tracey was such an inspiration, as always.
Manivone and I even got to see a film “Diary of a Tired Black Man” (www.tiredblackman.com) which proved quite entertaining and insightful. We also got a sneak-peek of a new CINEMAX project by erotica author Zane (and collaborator/legendary producer Suzanne DePasse): “Zane’s Sex Chronicles” (www.cinemax.com/).
But the highlight was “The Secret Life of Bees” (www.foxsearchlight.com/thesecretlifeofbees/) – a screening which featured Queen Latifah and her co-star Sophie Okonedo along with director Gina Prince-Blythewood who I interviewed (along with Nate Parker) during Unity ’08 in Chicago (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/29/like-i-never-left.html).
She was happy to see me as I was her.
After the movie, I got the chance to reconnect to one of my fellow Pentavaurates (You remember my ‘dinner group’, right?
And how my Stephanie recently got married…
the same day as our other buddies Adrienne and Galen [Updated PIX!]).
But there’s also my Terri whose husband Alvin Bowles played a key role in throwing the best party I’ve been to in a long time. BET (www.bet.com) threw a set for all sets.
It was the consummate culmination of a week in which Fashion and Urban Film took over New York City.
It was “Film and Fashion” - a reminder of what used to be more common place in New York City during less economically-strained times.
They used movies like "Shaft"; "Bonnie and Clyde"; "Breakfast at Tiffany's"; "Casino"; etc. as the larger-than-life backdrop to a gorgeous fashion show. Each scene was scored by a random but applicable song (not necessarily one from the film itself).
Well, the finale was my favorite Diana Ross' "Mahogany" featuring designs by the likes of Kevan Hall, Marc Jacobs, etc.
The song select was "No One Gets The Prize" from "The Boss". HOT!!!
And beyond that (I digress on DIANA - LOL!), it was an all-around good party - the people, food, drinks, etc.
Event producer (whose sets in the late '90s were the ONLY parties in town) David Watkins from ICON did this one along with expertise from star stylist June Ambrose (www.juneambrose.com/).
Also, one of my favorite designers Omar was on the roster (responsible for my bespoke tailored tux coutured-to-perfection just for me).
The work he did on my tux is pure artistry.
THANKS OMAR!
D-Nice was the DJ.
He just married Malinda Williams, “Bird” from Showtime’s “Soul Food”.
Mums from “Oz” was there.
He asked if I’d seen the new musical directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner BILL T. JONES “FELA!” – pointing out that he found me striking like a young Bill T. Jones. I have yet to see it though invited by my girlfriend Marcia but it has been extended and audiences are welcomed into the extravagant, decadent and rebellious world of Afrobeat legend FELA ANIKULAPO-KUTI.
Using his pioneering music (a blend of jazz, funk, and African rhythms and harmonies), FELA! explores Kuti's controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician. Featuring many of Fela's most captivating songs and Bill T. Jones's imaginative staging, this new show is a provocative hybrid of concert, dance and musical theater. FOR MUSIC, UPDATES, REVIEWS, DOWNLOADS AND MUCH MORE VISIT www.FELAOFFBROADWAY.COM
By the way, remember "The Five Heartbeats" and "Sugar Hill". Well, walking from "Urban World" on 34th and 8th to the after-pary on 42nd Street, Ant, Manivone, and I stumbled into Michael D. Wright who too co-owned upscale Southern cuisine "Jezebel" in Hell's Kitchen/Theater District (The take-out is still open). He seemed quite spirited and wanted me to shout him out here. So here goes: www.michaelwrightnyc.com ("...Nights like this I wish that raindrops would fall...").
“No One Gets The Prize” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpCjjbWYmvU) and all things Diana Ross’ “The Boss” – by the way - was a backdrop at an impromptu hang Ant and I went to at our dear friend Ken Roberson, choreographer of the Tony-award-winning “Avenue Q”. His good girlfriend Karen Chilton.
Karen is the author of “Hazel Scott” (http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=197245) – the first biography of an important but overlooked African American pianist, singer, actor, and civil-rights advocate.
It sounds like a sexy read. Celebrity bio is my favorite genre… and this one must get adapted into a film. Karen, also an actress, and Ant, an actor, could play Billie Holliday and Fats Waller respectively. Look at the synergy here.
Speaking of BIOS, another of my diva/pop culture icons Diahann Carroll has a new memoir coming out. “The Legs Are The Last To Go: Aging, Acting, Marrying, and other things I learned the hard way” promises a history lesson and juice.
I’m sure Diahann Carroll will LOVE my friend Patrik-Ian Polk’s feature NOAH'S ARC which comes out on October 24th (www.noahsarcmovie.com).
(According to these JET Magazine covers, she seems to be aligned with us. SMILE!).
It will be put out in a Platform Release- opening weekend will be Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Washington DC, and Atlanta. As with most platform releases, the better the film does in these initial cities, the better the chances the film has of expanding to more markets in the weeks following. My good industry girlfriend Jackie Bazan is handling the publicity for the film (www.bazanpr.com). I’ve moderated and hosted lots of Q&As and interviews for her company. We all have to go out and support this flick as we LOVE NOAH’S ARC and must help its big screen impression make a splash.
Last night, Ant, Ern, Michael K. Watts, and I went to see Celine Dion. I was able to snag some tix for the sold-out Madison Square Garden show in New York City. She was amazing!!!!
Remember I saw Pepa at the Vibe 15th Anniversary Party? (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/15/masters-mentors.html)
Well, last night, Ant and I attended a LIFEBEAT set in celebration of Pepa’s latest tome “Let’s Talk About Pep” (www.amazon.com/Lets-Talk-About-Pep/dp/B001EVNM3Q) and SALT WAS IN THE HOUSE as well!!!!!
Well, actually it was HOME (www.homeguesthouse.com). I’m complete now! They were both so kind and sweet… yet savory!
What a week!

“IT’S GOOD TO BE (BLACK)”!!!!
Well, you recall the note that one of my best friends, Bernie, sent me. She and I were pages - along with six of our other friends - at Georgia’s State Capital (by way of Savannah). I reflected on that special moment in 1982 via this blog from a few weeks ago: (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/22/in-a-world-of-fading-treasures-love-is-the-greatest-pleasure.html). Bernie reminded me that after listening to Luther Vandross’ sultry cover of The Carpenters' “Superstar” on a loop (compliments of our other good girlfriend Lori - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lULU_-L-v3U) that we too FINALLY got the chance to get another song in. It was Kool & The Gang’s “Joanna” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snzafal2nAw ) – only my 12-year-old brainchild was that we replace the title name with “Atlanta” (“Atlanta… I love you…”). This, as we eased restlessly yet excitedly down the road [READ: I-16 N and I-75 N] to our ‘Emerald City’ (Atlanta which – at the time – was such a big metropolitan compared to Savannah… and still, to some degree)!!!
Well, I couldn’t write that without another friend of old, Tonja, weighing in. She is my friend from 6th grade who shared the title “Oreo” with me as – at our Savannah elementary school – we were the only two African Americans in accelerated classes, which included special projects like our published book “A Child’s View of Savannah Squares” and our history presentation on Wickersham Iron (which took us from Savannah to Atlanta to The Smithsonian in DC). Plus, Tonja and her family – just after our family (and a couple of other brave clans) – began to turn our once-all-white, South side neighborhood “Colonial Village” into a more integrated space, if you will [In my lifetime, a cross was burned in our front yard with some KKK paraphernalia in the mailbox that included a note that read “Niggers go home!”]. I was 10.
Tonja nor I had an issue with our identity (as African Americans) and – eventually as we matriculated through middle school and high school – we identified those folks of color who understood us (as we were) and welcomed us with open arms as we also embraced our White brothers and sisters with whom we continued to relate harmoniously. I last saw Tonja in 1987 as she left Savannah suddenly for her mother's hometown of Macon and we never saw each other again. With buzz around our recent 20-year high school reunion planning (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/6/17/someday-well-be-together-we-still-together-kinda.html), she found me and recently reached out via email. The subject line on her cyber-note read “FROM OREOS TO COOL J COOKIES…” (a line from LL Cool J’s “I’m Bad” – rap from our high school days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpM4G20Ltpk).
She caught me up on her life. She’s a wife and mother now – working in Atlanta… and I’m so proud of her. She too wrote me in response to the blog in which I referenced Bernie's feedback regarding my way with words. Tonja echoed Bernie's sentiments: “… You've always had a knack for "remixes". Don't tell me you forgot "Fried Chicken Woman" instead of “Alligator Woman”. Wasn't that a Cameo song?
Also you rewrote a song for [some of the closely-cropped girls] in high school… We should've known in middle school you were destined for greatness-so much creativity.”
So as not to disappoint Bernie or Tonja, I’m channeling Natalie Cole’s “Good To Be Back” (substituting “Black” for Back - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT_t-3VlOYc) because I was invited back to The South (Atlanta… to be exact) to host an event at Atlanta’s High Museum (www.high.org) on the campus of The Woodruff Arts Center ( www.woodruffcenter.org/ ) – also home to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (which – as a member of the Morehouse College Glee Club - www.mcgclub.com - I had the chance to perform with many times. I even got to speak on behalf of the glee club as we performed a tribute to Atlanta Symphony Orchestra composer and conductor Robert Shaw in 1991 when honored on CBS' "Kennedy Center Honors" - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2006/12/11/this-house-is-built-on-a-foundation-of-love.html).
But get this: My good friend Kelly Welborn (Senior Marketing Manager at The High) made it possible for me to host “ Art in the City” in which The High extends its hours and hosts an open mic/spoken word experience.
Easy enough, but on this occasion, they sweetened the deal with HistoryRemixed: Road to Freedom and After 1968 – two exhibits-in-one that take you on an amazing ride through the civil rights movement and beyond, highlighting how the movement has changed our nation and inspired artists today.
And I got a private tour from Julian Cox, curator of “Road to Freedom” (below left).
Also, I got to engage in a long, thoughtful chat with Jeffrey Grove, curator of “After 1968” and one of its artists Nadine Robinson whose “Coronation Theme: Organon” segues the museum patron from the ‘movement’ into a sculpture-of-audio-speakers in the shape of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King preached. POWERFUL!
BUT THERE’S MORE: HBO came in to partner with The High (You know how I love synergy…) to host an exclusive, preview screening of HBO’s “The Black List” ( www.hbo.com/docs/docuseries/theblacklist/ ) which premiered this week on HBO (IT’S A MUST-SEE as I wrote about last week from the NYC screening where I met Chairman of Time Warner Richard Parsons and one of the featured "Black List"-ers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar : http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/15/masters-mentors.html).
And like last week, its creator Elvis Mitchell (seen with me below) was in the house. (Photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders couldn’t make it.)
NOW STAY WITH ME: I got to invite many of my friends from the industry here in Atlanta… and many of them came out. But most importantly, my sister Janice, her husband Vincent, my cousin Floyd, my “Original Amazing Grace” and best friend from Savannah Natalie, her husband Dwayne, good girlfriend from college Audrey Irvine, my AABJ/NABJ sister Angela Robinson, and a host of others from my intimate world were in the house (I’ll detail a bit of it later).
But MOST excitedly, after not seeing her since November 1987, the aforementioned TONJA was there with her husband Prince in tow (and his client Keyoshe is singer/writer/actress/model - www.keyoshe.com – who performed in the open mic portion of the evening... and is seen in this picture below.).
AND I TOOK PICTURES OF IT ALL!!!!!!!!! (Unfortunately, my camera was stolen once I got back to New York City. MORE ON THAT LATER: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/26/one-lost-camera-dont-stop-no-blog-entry.html).
Fortunately, I have friends in HIGH PLACES. My fellow Atlanta University Center brother ( www.aucenter.edu/ ) who attended Clark Atlanta University (www.cau.edu) while I was at Morehouse (www.morehouse.edu), Shannon Mccollum (myspace.com/shannonmccollum) was commissioned by HBO to shoot the event and he has made it possible for me to illustrate the night via my blog (if not my personal pix with my family, friends, and – most disappointed [in my lust for “full circle moments”] – Tonja). THANK YOU, SHANNON! YOU ARE THE BEST! [He took each and everyone of the pix here from that night!]
OH, ONE MORE THING: Remember Tonja’s reference to “Alligator Woman” by CAMEO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvKeTQ1pDoQ). Well, one of Cameo’s members Gerald Bright was in the house. He was there to support his wife Sheila Pree Bright whose “Young Americans” exhibit just wrapped (www.sheilapreebright.com).
And I made sure to introduce him to my brother-in-law Vincent, fellow-Cameo-enthusiast. And I took that picture too - the one that was on the camera that was stolen. <Okay, I'll move on...>
Now, ONWARD with my telling of the night:

It truly felt like a homecoming for me. And everyone is doing so well. In addition to my Audrey and my Angela Robinson, there were so many others.

My NABJ baby (www.nabj.org) Errin Haines (reporter at The Associated Press - www.ap.org/ ) is doing her thing as the now-emerged journalist that The National Association of Black Journalists named "Emerging Journalist of the Year" in 2006. My friend Gil Robertson was in the house ( www.robertsontreatment.com/ ). His clients did brilliantly in Beijing at The Olympics (www.en.beijing2008.cn/ ). Here's the final medal count for athletes managed by Gil's client Icon Management Inc. ( www.iconmanagementinc.com/ ):
Angelo Taylor Gold, 400mh, 1600 meter relay;
LaShawn Merritt, Gold 400m and 1600 meter relay;
Shawn Crawford, SIvler 200m;
LaShawn Merritt, Bronze 100m & 200m.
I’ve blogged about Icon before: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/4/16/as-the-sun-has-its-place-up-in-the-sky.html .
And let me just list the WHO’S WHO IN BLACK AMERICA - including Kenny Leon of True Colors Theatre Company (www.truecolorstheatrecompany.com/), which has upcoming final series of August Wilson Full Circle: Gem of the Ocean & Radio Golf at the Alliance Theatre (www.alliancetheatre.org/) opening this week and Stephanie Hughley, creator of National Black Arts Festival (www.nbaf.org/). Many of those from Atlanta, in Atlanta, who traveled to Atlanta … were there:
On the HBO tip: Elvis Mitchell, of course; And a special shout out to Lynn Waymer, Director of Affiliate Marketing and Pat Conner, Director of PR… and though she wasn’t there, Janet Walley was there in spirit and organized everything including the NY premiere particulars before heading out on a European vacation. Also, Valerie Harris, PR, and Stephanie and Jermaine in marketing. WE LOVE YOU, HBO!!!!
Kelly’s High Museum marketing team includes: Terra Washington and Monifa Clunie and recently departed Tiffany Bailey (now at the CDC). And all of my buddies on the security staff in the City and at The High (Officers Holland, Duncan, Waldon, Benjamin, and entire staff). JOB WELL DONE… and THANKS FOR TAKING CARE OF ME!
My fellow Renaissance man DJ Tabone (www.MYSpace.com/DJTabone and www.RawSoulFM.com) who scored the night with his great sounds and helped keep the PASS THE MIC/OPEN MIC going (with over 30 artists, musicians and poets to boot) – so I could continue to hop around from all the concurrent events going on. By the way, “Art in the City” is the High’s weekly event held every Thursday, 5 to 8pm at the High Museum of Friday Jazz. It is a monthly event held every third Friday, 5 to 10pm. Open Mic is held on the third Thursday of the month.
Other than Julian and Jeffrey, the other HIGH creators were in the house (and quite lovely and supportive to this event):
Linda Dubler, Curator of Film
Carol Thompson, Curator of African Art – High Museum of Art
Virginia Shearer, Assoc. Chair of Education, High Museum
David Manuel, Director of Community Affairs of Woodruff Arts Center
Tara Perry, VP of Strategic Planning
Joe Bankoff, CEO of Woodruff Arts Center
Road to Freedom &After 1968 Creative Team:
The HistoryRemixed campaign was created by Co-CEO, McGhee Williams Osse and her team: Cara Cocroft, Michele Andwele, Jacqueline High, and the creative team: Lisa McConnell, Ron Smith, Karen Kane. Shout out to Jeff McFarland of Verizon for the lead). Media Director, Gail Warren and new account reps from the Atlanta Burrell Communications office attended Thursday’s event.
Dawnne Amey and Ashlee Feemster from Brand Apostles promotional agency were in attendance. They produced the engagement program and street team activities (promoting “Living Statues” pulled from the photos in the Road to Freedom exhibition around the Metro-Atlanta area at festivals and parks (check them out at V-103’s For Sisters Only and 100 Black Men of Atlanta’s Parade in September)).
Artists: Sam Mahone was also in the house!
V-103: Joyce Littel of the Quiet Storm, Bob Jackson, Shelice Smith, and Elle Duncan
-- all of whom represent the Number one radio station in Atlanta ( www.v103.com/ ).
High Museum of Art Civil Rights Influencers: Frank Sanchez of the Boys and Girls Club of America; 100 Black Men of Dekalb County Sylvester Hopewell Jr.; Mocha Moms Shenia Kirkland; GA State Coordinator, Marie Smith; Wande Meadows, President of South Dekalb Chapter; Lesia Mescudi of USalon in Buckhead; and Cynthia Craig of Azar Salon in Buckhead; Melissa McGhie from Turner; Rasheedah Ali of Spectrum Communications; and Ed Phelps of Studio Vis.
Other notables: My Savannah homeboy Stacy T. Quarterman, Artist Development from SONY BMG and Terrell Henderson from Universal Music Group for their Art in the City/HBO gift bag contributions; Johnna M. Snell , Senior Director of Workplace Giving, American Heart Association; Lisa Turner, member of the High, Carmen Jones of Turner, Author Roger Louis Kennedy of “My Spouse Made Me Rich”, Xylina Knuckles of 300 Atlanta, Michael Heard (and wife) from CNN’s “Black in America”).
AS IS HER STYLE: My friend Kelly Welborn ensured that I was truly taken care of. I was put up at 12 ( www.twelvehotels.com/AtlanticStation/HotelHome.do ). We had a briefing lunch at Lobby at 12 ( www.lobbyattwelve.com/home.html ).
For dinner, Lynn Waymer, Director of Affiliate Marketing at HBO, joined Kelly and me for a lovely dinner at Spice Market ( www.spicemarketatlanta.com/ ) inside the W Hotel in Colony Square (www.starwoodhotels.com). When Ant and I stayed there last year, it was a Sheraton (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/2/9/kiss-my-grits.html ). It has totally been transformed into a slice of Los Angeles.
Afterwards, we enjoyed cocktails upstairs at Whiskey Park with David Manuel, Director of Community Affairs of Woodruff Arts Center and Johnna M. Snell , Senior Director of Workplace Giving, American Heart Association.
The next day, I got to experience the Atlantic Station my nephew has boasted about (as he is a junior at my alma mater Morehouse and is ever the patron in these parts - www.atlanticstation.com/ ): Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro ( www.copelandscheesecakebistro.com/ ). My "Amazing Grace" and best friend from Savannah Nat came and sponsored that moment which gave us our face-to-face time vs. our daily voice-to-voice time during her (and sometimes my) commute to or from our work. Later, she came to the event with her husband Dwayne in tow.
