PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!

CAN WE TALK?
Am doing more BUDGETED TALKS these days. My PRUDENTIAL talk last month still has legs:
http://news.prudential.com/news/lgbt-financial-experience-symposium-worth.htm.  The DEBT FREE GUYS quoted me in their FORBES column: https://www.forbes.com/sites/debtfreeguys/2017/06/15/profiting-from-the-rising-equity-in-your-individuality/2/#4f71cf4365db. Also: they invited me to make a guest appearance on their MASS MUTUAL-presented podcast QUEER MONEY: http://debtfreeguys.com/patrick-l-riley/. Additionally, I've taken my ART OF THE INTERVIEW talk to more than the NYU Urban Journalism Workshop this year. The Hugh N. Boyd Journalism Diversity Workshop at Rutgers University for New Jersey high school students also invited me to present. And for NABJ, I'm looking forward to hosting two screenings for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation - also at the NABJ Convention: short film "90 Days"--- co-directed by Nathan Hale Williams and Jennia Fredrique... and GAY LIKE ME, a documentary Executive Produced by Derek J.

NEXT STEPS

AND FINALLY: I have been on the festival circuit all this year in promotion of an independent film that goes down as my FILM DEBUT. I play what has become "fan favorite" RUDY in the Shaquille-O'Neal and Michael Baumgartner-Executive Produced film STEPS - Co-Directed by award-winning Rock Davis and Jay Rodriguez, Jr. - which just played to an enthusiastic, packed house at the NEWARK BLACK FILM FESTIVAL (which is hosted at The Newark Museum every Wednesday through the summer: www.newarkmuseum.org/nbff). STEPS is the vision of filmmaker/writer EDDIE HARRIS. He and casting director/producer/actress extraordinaire Penwah cast me in STEPS, which has received several film festival prizes and critical acclaim:

a. Official Selection at the 2nd annual HUFF - Hampton University Film Festival.
b. Winter 2016 presented STEPS as an Official Selection in the Jersey City International Television and Film Festival-JCITFF; STEPS took home BEST DIRECTOR (for our AWESOME Co-Directors Jay Rodriguez and Rock Davis); and BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE FILM!
c. STEPS PREMIEREd on my birthday in Jersey City November 2015.
d. In April 2016, we did a Harlem NYC PREMIERE at#MISTHarlem.
e. Peachtree Village International Film Festival in Atlanta, GA (Closing Selection).
f. Newark International Film Festival (Inaugural Event).
g. Urban World Film Festival (Official Selection).
h. Brooklyn Academy of Music. May 2017.

Life of Riley talks and pops

Hi folks!
In the world of #LifeofRiley, I always say "One [Booking] at a time, sweet Jesus!".

1. This next, well-timed one is FREE and OPEN to the PUBLIC: I am giving a KEYNOTE TALK (Think: Ted Talk) on how I have navigated my decades-long career as a gay Black man; the LGBT community I faced in the 90’s versus the present; the changing face of the LGBT household; and more. It all goes down Tuesday, June 13, 2017 | 6:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Cocktail Reception 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Kiyo Hall – Prudential Tower 655 Broad Street Newark, NJ RSVP: www.PruLGBT.splashthat.com.  ALSO on program: FIRESIDE CHAT with the DEBT FREE GUYS David Auten and John Schneider and MODERATOR/GMA Journalist T.J. Holmes steers a panel that will discuss findings from the 2016 LGBT Financial Experience study and tour, and will review the concerns regarding wealth, legacy, society, and protection within the LGBT community. Stay tuned as things develop in the #LifeofRiley and I am vetting new opportunities (to further book up my Summer 2017 Calendar), so let me know. #PruLGBT #splashthat

2. I just hosted CUTTING FOR A CURE'S CELEBRITY FUNDRAISING DINNER at CHERI RESTAURANT in Harlem....and Humanitarian Award Honoree John Quinones who said "You are GREAT at hosting events! Wow!" I retorted "You are GREAT at ABC News' "What Would You Do?" (which is why you must get into the new season's launch in June 2017. For more information about the show, visit www.abcnews.go.com/WhatWouldYouDo).

Plus, my friend, the amazing Monifah and Jessica Betts and Diamond V serenaded the generous crowd with Supreme Vocals...and Miss Jessie’s helped power the goody bags AND the Auction! Whew! And we were all their to support Marsha Bonner and Denny Moe's movement to which you can all support: www.cuttingforacure.mydagsite.com

3.Memorial Day Weekend is coming up and I'll be on HOSTING duties for LGBT music fest XSCAPE Puerto Rico 2017 (I'm hosting the VANGUARD AWARDS and co-hosting CELEBRITY KARAOKE --- with Miss Jessie’s Goody Bags).

6. So my dear friend and colleague Derrick Hemphill is Artist Representative for Jessica Strahan (no relation to Mr. GMA Michael Strahan). She's one of three artists represented in Mirrored Migrations which hosted a discussion on its closing day at Brooklyn's Corridor Gallery with a talk between one-third of the women artist troika LaToya M. Hobbs (Arkansas) and the curator, New Orleans' own Sharbreon Plummer who brings together these artists - Lovie Olivia (Texas) also featured - reflecting stories of survival and preservation often lost in the folds of history. Sharbreon Plummer is an administrator whose research centers on Black Visual Culture. She currently serves as Program Associate for Community Engagement at the Joan Mitchell Center. For further information about where this exhibition is going, please contact charlotte@rushartsgallery.org or via phone 845-480-1258. Mirrored Migrations confronts a conversation of the national and global influences of the South on contemporary Black Womanhood. Featured artists LaToya M. Hobbs (Arkansas), Lovie Olivia (Texas), Jessica Strahan (Louisiana) study their personal multifaceted journeys of womanhood and perspectives of the world while reflecting on the traditions, communities and magic that exists. Subscribe to Jessica Strahan's newsletter: www.bit.ly/jHand-SignUp.  #MirroredMigrations #LifeofRiley — at Corridor Gallery.

You might have needed to know me in the ‘70s or ‘80s to know that #LifeofRiley – ALSO – considers MARY TYLER MOORE an ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! And though our moment would not be photographed, I also got an opportunity to interview Mary Tyler Moore in her New York City, 5th Avenue pad for recurring freelance client “The Oprah Winfrey Show” --- a few years after OPRAH’s 1996 in-studio “ugly cry” moment with her. That was in 2000 or so...and Mary and I talked all things DOGS for this "Remembering Your Spirit" segment which also required Mary and I take a field trip to the ASPCA - so she could visit some of her "furry friends". Well, I’m not going to start COUNTING CELEBRITY DEATHS and tying them into some Nielsen ratings for dead people in 2017. But MARY TYLER MOORE was #1 ....and today is the day MARY TYLER MOORE exits earth stage left (as her spirit soars well beyond the heights of her iconic hat toss in the title sequence of her legendary MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW). WHAT A LOSS for THE WORLD, AMERICA, POP CULTURE, SO MANY, OPRAH, and me! And yet: WHAT A LEGACY!!!! I can continue to LOVE MARY TYLER MOORE – on her show; the DICK VAN DYKE repeats; ORDINARY PEOPLE; and just about everything she did! Will miss your SPUNK, MARY! LOVE YOU FOREVER!

man - inside and out!
11. Hi folks! You know how much I LOVE Spirited Actor’s own Tracey Moore who
– over the years - has breathed life into the world through a powerful testimonial
in action of acting, casting, producing, directing, hosting...and now hosting this
project alongside everything else.
I even audited her Spirited Actor course when she started it in 1995…
and I continue to remain close to Tracey and her family who ARE my
family. In a nutshell, Tracey Moore ROCKS…and SHARES – so I was
too elated that she welcomed ACTORS to be in her Studio Audience
for her PILOT: “Inside the Black Box with Tracey Moore”. She shot
it at The Sheen Center in The Village.
Her guests for the pilot included awesome actors Malik Yoba and Joe Morton
with whom I got to share that I always had an “identification” with him (even
as a child when he played Fred Sanford’s BFF Grady’s son-in-law). We connected
that our mutual, international military “brat” history may be what I saw! This show
is lively and fun! Tracey is the best HOST and ACTING COACH. The guests inspired
and motivated ALL!
12.. Ant and I will celebrate 11 years at "The Color Purple" - the very show we were
attending when we met December 1, 2005. This time, we'll see Jennifer Holliday as Shug Avery!

So excited! Hope you've had the chance to see my NBCBLK interview
with Miss Holliday:

13. President Obama Names Recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom…
and among them is someone I hoped silently would get it now (vs. later):
MISS ROSS! Today, President Barack Obama named 21 recipients of the
Presidential Medal of Freedom – including Diana Ross – encapsulated in
bio via the White House release as follows: “Diana Ross has had an iconic
career spanning more than 50 years within the entertainment industry in
music, film, television, theater, and fashion. Diana Ross is an Academy Award nominee, inductee into the
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and recipient of the Grammy Awards
highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award. Ross was a
recipient of the 2007 Kennedy Center Honors. Diana Ross's
greatest legacy is her five wonderful children.” The Presidential
Medal of Freedom is the Nation's highest civilian honor, presented
to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions
to the security or national interests of the United States, to world
peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.
The awards will be presented at the White House on November 22nd. President Obama said, "The Presidential Medal of Freedom is not just our nation's highest civilian honor - it's a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better. From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes, and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way."
This event will be streamed live at: www.whitehouse.gov/live
