PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!

THEIR EYEZ

TEA CAKE’S LEGACY

I'll soon be wrapping up a freelance project with recurring producing client; still managing some other projects for which I'm being retained; and will - of course - take any meetings for any other good-fit fare. Meanwhile, PLEASE check out my latest on-cam/on-the-mic hosting duties via this link: http://www.thegreenespace.org/events/thegreenespace/2012/sep/17/their-eyes-were-watching-god-teacakes-legacy/. Over the past year, The Greene Space has produced a series of events to honor the 75th anniversary of Zora Neale Hurston’s seminal novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” These events included panels with such luminaries as Sonia Sanchez, Ruby Dee, and Alice Walker, as well as a live radio drama recording featuring Phylicia Rashad, Ruben Santiago Hudson, and Leslie Uggams. I covered much of it – including an awesome panel earlier this year: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2012/1/27/black-tales.html.  To culminate this series of events, The Greene Space produced a panel discussion that looks at the work through a male lens (as in "Tea Cake"). I moderated the multi-platform discussion for NY Public Radio (with on-line video streaming technology as well) at The Greene Space located in SoHo...and what a great time we had waxing philosophical - from the male perspective - about "Teacake and Janie". My guests included award-winning poet and author Carl Hancock Rux (who doubled as panelist and poet - performing an original work entitled "Windows" commissioned by the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space); Caldecott-award-winning writer Arthur Yorinks (who adapted "Their Eyes Were Watching God" for The Greene Space's radio drama); Brandon Dirden who played Teacake in the radio drama and is currently starring in Topdog/Underdog at Two Rivers Theater. And my namesake and long-time friend Patrik Henry Bass, senior editor of Essence magazine. Was also a pleasure to be stage managed by dear friend Nikki Johnson who is ALWAYS THE BEST!

WORKIN' OVERTIME

Another spot ON-CAM gig I did recently is host the red carpet launch of UBC-TV NETWORKS – freshly launched channel out of Harlem.

So far, I've only hosted their launch event: https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?v=295251087249668. I may continue to do spot personality work for the promising start-up, but will not be hosting any of its first roll-out shows as originally reported. BIGGEST OF CONGRATULATIONS to Peggy Dodson and her team!

ROBBIE & TIM ARE BACK!

We’ve been singing the praises of OWN’s “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s” since before it hit the airwaves – having met Miss Robbie and Tim when they came to NYC to promote it last year: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2011/11/10/put-me-to-the-test.html.  Now, it’s an undeniable HIT! www.oprah.com/sweetiepies.  A gathering recently at Newark’s Loft 47 Bistro (www.loft47bistro.com)  brought Ant and me back in the company of our favorites, Miss Robbie and Tim – both of whom showed us LOTS OF LOVE when they saw us in the room. Tim even shouted us out to the rest of those in attendance. Also, I stumbled into a childhood role model, Cheryl Washington, whose works on “Showbiz TONIGHT” in the ‘80s/’90s is one of my inspirations for being in the biz. CONGRATS, Miss Robbie and Tim. See you soon! #SWEETIE PIES #NEWARK

TASHA SMITH, NATALIE COLE, VANESSA WILLIAMS, & MORE!

Back in February 2012 during Fashion Week, I'd mentioned that one of my BFFs Carl Nelson invited me to experience designer OMAR SALAM's Four Seasons Hotel presentation. Well, Omar was selected as the top designer to show his Spring Summer 2013 Collection in this year's Harlem Fashion Row (http://www.harlemsfashionrow.com/HFR2012Invite/), which is a true honor.

The show took place at the Jazz and Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall. Inside the packed house of 400 people or so, my many industry friends and fam - from too many walks of my life to mention, but all of whom I've chronicled in my blog.

Was also cool to see my BFF Sidra's identical twin Tasha Smith of Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?" & & "For Better or For Worse" uber-fame; VH-1's hit "Hollywood Exes"-own Nicole Murphy (who was Omar's star model); the LEGENDARY Natalie Cole; and - OMG! - one of my AB FABs Vanessa Williams!!!

Worth also noting that my Amazing Grace BFF Mara Schiavocampo (who adds adjunct journalism grad school professor to her already-impressive credential as NBC News Correspondent) invited me to join her for a pre-Fashion-Show cocktail at Stone Rose Lounge AND our girlfriend from Norway Elisabeth Blix was in town to keep the party going - from the event to the Hudson Hotel's courtyard terrance to Club Therapy.

MY SIDRA & ANGELA DAVIS

CONGRATS to my BFF Sidra Smith - one of the producers on "Free Angela & All Political Prisoners", which premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival at Toy Thompson Hall in Toronto. Will Smith; Jada Pinkett Smith, and Jay Z are Executive Producers on the compelling project directed by Shola Lynch. <I smell OSCAR! LOL!> http://movies.yahoo.com/photos/2012-toronto-film-festival-premieres-slideshow/free-angela-political-prisoners-premiere-20120909-235628-706.html

TYRA BANKS, THE HAMPTONS, AND MORE

Sure, Tyra Banks was among the guests...but we all felt like Superstars as a chariot took 50 or so of us from NYC to The Hamptons one recent weekend to celebrate Red-Rooster's own Derek Fleming who has been a friend for over ten years now - from Brooklyn to Chicago and now-Harlem, we've shared some fun and thoughtful times. I'm honored to have been invited to participate in this fete alongside many Harlem friends, Red Rooster owner Marcus Samuelson, and a host of others. GREAT NIGHT - chockful of new and old friends!

DR. RONA ALLEN, HERVE AIMABLE, AND MORE!

Shout out to our friend Trevor Hartmon and MR. Kofi Bannerman for inviting us to a private jazz party with lots of great networking energy in the midst. The organic night was held at the beautiful Englewood, NJ home of Michael J. Torres and Dr. Rona Allen whose stage name includes the name of the ensemble she leads “Rona Allen’s In the Light Band” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S1xSOtpOLg).  And other special musicians performed as well. What a special evening with a house full of FABULOUS people – including my friend Herve Aimable (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/28/love-is-in-control-finger-on-the-trigger.html)! Thanks Trevor and Kofi… and our neighbors Michael and Dr. Rona!

ALICIA IN NYC

A friend and actual co-worker since 2000 until just –last year by way of my recurring client in ChicagO, I was so excited to dine alfresco with friend-for-life Alicia Bailey who is currently a diva-promo-producer at HGTV in Knoxville, TN. In town for business, she popped by my current, recurring client (this week) in NYC to say HI (to two more former Harpo pros with whom I’m currently enjoying some professional Summer/Fall 2012 days at our mutual client BET, Ramona & Blair). To punctuate our reunion: crab cakes and Caesar salad at The Bryant Park Grill where we ran into what some say is Mr. Obama’s doppelganger, but I know him as “brother”: my Morehouse brother Imar Hutchins who happens to also be a “Son of Oprah” who I had a hand (and many feet) in producing at one of her big SURPRISE FAREWELL shows: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150194744863737&set=a.10150194744438737.310643.662073736&type=3&theater.

CELESTE RIP

As I readied for a project I am working on in the city, THE READING OF THE NAMES was - of course - on! My friend; editor; and fellow NYABJ/NABY member Celeste Victora was in the number in 2001. This cut-away of her BEAUTIFUL FACE this morning stilled me! Here are my thoughts from that week in 2001: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/a-letter-from-ground-zero-91101.html  RIP to Celeste and ALL OF THOSE WE LOST!

LABOR DAY FUN!

SUNDAE SERMON!

Summer's done but KARAOKE FUN is still going down - in a new location TenthRail Lounge - hosted by my former-fellow-NO-PARKING host (while I was doing ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY at NATIVE): MARIO!!!! CARLOS KING & JAMIE FOSTER BROWN

My FAB friend Jamie Foster Brown features our beloved Carlos King in this month's Sister 2 Sister Magazine! AWESOME PROFILE! Proud to call him friend and happy his lens has even captured me a time or two when he was producing on the team that chronicled the behind-the-scenes of my Chicago client's last season. CONGRATS CARLOS KING! XO

STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE

My industry buddy Jacquie Lee (www.jacquieleeinternational.com) made sure “A Day in the Life of Riley: pop culture & possibilities” was in the house for the first preview of “A Streetcar Named Desire”. She’s one of the associate producers on the project who has been instrumental in building some wonderful corporate marketing synergies between many vendors and the show (Jacquie choreographed an AMAZING sweepstakes with the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation – a giveaway that promises free trips - including a 7-day cruise, a weekend at the ESSENCE Music Festival, a trip to NYC to see 'Streetcar', etc.). You recall, we told you about this much-anticipated, multi-cultural revival a few weeks ago when it was announced. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2012/3/15/dreams-and-desire.html). Well, it’s on… and happening in a BEAUTIFUL & BRILLIANT way! The stellar cast includes: Blair Underwood who takes “mean and dysfunctional” to a whole new level with his dark and effective interpretation of “Stanley” (His L.A.-based wife Desiree, who was in the house, agreed!); stellar actress Nicole Ari Parker DOES THE DARN THING as “Blanche”. I’ve always loved her work – from “Soul Food” to “Remember the Titans”, but BABY!!!!!! (a la with my New Orleans accent), she truly delivers one over-the-top-yet-spot-on moment at a time with style, grace, and DELUSION! LOL! Her fine husband Boris Kodjoe was – of course – there to support. You recall, he is the first cousin of my beloved Kodjoe who – coincidentally – passed away seven years ago this week (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2006/10/25/love-is-in-the-air.html). Though life and love continue in my life inside a whole new and wonderful adventure, I must say it’s been a rough week for me (in my memory mind). But the places that Tennessee Williams takes us, according to this AWESOME cast, healed me on many fronts. I got to share that with dear friends Jason and Marqice (Ant’s and my favorite couple); my social-networking doppelganger Bevy Smith who proved an awesome escort for the night; my BFF Sidra who I hadn’t seen in a minute (so it was good to catch up). Moreover, having the chance to chat with Boris and Nicole who I only met at Kodjoes’ home-going service back in 2005 proved a salve for me. And the rest of the cast is just a delight – on and off the stage: Daphne Rubin-Vega; Wood Harris; the LEGEND-ary Carmen De Lavallade; Jacinto Taras Riddick; Count Stovall; etc. Jacquie Lee hosted a lovely after-set at Bourbon Street (www.bourbonny.com/) on Restaurant Row (right across from a cabaret spot at which I used to perform “An Intimate Evening with Patrick Riley” from 1996-2005. It felt good to be back on that block for something). And as play synergies go, after-party sponsor “Southern Comfort” provided the goods. BIG CONGRATS to Lead Producers Stephen Byrd and my Spelman sister Alia Jones (ALSO producers of Broadway's All-Black Revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" from a few years ago: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/1/9/pat-on-a-hot-tin-roof.html); director Emily Mann; and a few of my buddies who – in addition to Jacquie Lee – round out the FAB list of associate producers (Randolph Sturrup; Paulette Martin-Carter; George Williams; Socrates Marquez; etc.). ALSO IN THE HOUSE: Broadway and day-time soap LEGEND Tonya Pinkins, who was such a joy at the after-party as we compared notes on the play and the wings. LOL!  NOW, HERE’S THE GOOD PART: Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire" is in PRE-VIEWS now and it opens April 22, 2012 at The Broadhurst Theatre (235 W 44th Street). Here’s a discount code. Go to www.broadwayoffers.com and use code ASJKB215. For more info on the show: http://www.streetcaronbroadway.com/

MAGIC/BIRD

When my Broadway marketing BFF Marcia Pendelton invited Ant and me to check out “MAGIC/BIRD” (www.magicbirdbroadway.com/), I reconnected to my youth. I was the youngest boy of two (And FYI: an oldest sibling – a sister – was in the mix too). Whereas my father and I may have always had ‘reading’ and ALL THINGS INTELLECTUAL in common (library visits, books, newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, etc.), LOVE OF SPORTS belonged to he and my brother. They tried to get me into it, but it never took (even though it’s worth noting that I played all the little-league options…and I did just fine on the respective teams, THANK YOU! LOL! I am quite agile and strong [even though I wanted to express it in a dance class, but I digress… LMAO!]). So, coincidentally, Ant had to work late. Not wanting to waist the chance to experience this much-buzzed-about production (and to put my 2 cents in via the blogosphere), I end up taking my sports-enthusiast brother’s son (my FAVORITE and only nephew), Herman L. Riley, who is much more of a B-BALL fan than his Uncle Patrick (a la my brother/his perhaps more persuasive dad). That said, he AND I enjoyed it! Though it was good to see the dots connected in this LEGENDARY rivalry, I actually remembered a lot of the story-line via maybe osmosis and acknowledged comprehension of what I perhaps was pretending not to understand. Leave it to BROADWAY to get ME into SPORTS. LOL! SO…if you are a BIG NBA FAN, you MUST see this Broadway play (And you won’t be alone: So many men and sports fans were in the house – from B-ball players, coaches, Lakers fans, Celtics fans, etc.). If you are NOT A BIG SPORTS FAN, you MUST see this Broadway play. The cast’s performances are strong and the multi-media effects are stunning! Plus, it’s a quick 90 minutes (NO INTERMISSION). So to the ADDs out there (like me), it flies by! LOL!I loved it so much, Ant finally got to go with his co-worker Stephanie. And my friend and former co-worker from Chicago, Kevin Gist, came with his beautiful family in tow for Spring Break... and I arranged for them to enjoy the show as well.

Here are some details on the show:

BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL & LACHANZE

Tony Award Winner Actor/Singer Brian Stokes Mitchell performed at Westport Country Playhouse Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County. Its Spring Gala was organized - in large part - by my good girlfriend Michelle Sapp (sister of Tony-award-winning songstress LaChanze, who too was in attendance, and is a dear friend). Brian - also a Tony-Award winner - has credits that cover the range of the Broad...way stage ("Kiss Me Kate"); film ("Jumping the Broom"); TV ("Frasier"; "Ugly Betty"; and opposite my Diana Ross & Brandy, "Double Platinum"; and who remembers Trapper John MD. Just sayin'. LOL!). What an AWESOME singer and performer he is - even calling his former co-star from "Ragtime", LaChanze on the stage to join him on their big duet from that hit Broadway show! By the way: Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County provides arts education to children at risk and those with special needs. The goals are to improve academic performance, increase graduation rates and serve as a catalyst for lifelong success. Neighborhood Studios is based in Bridgeport, CT and serves the greater Fairfield County community. For more information and how you can support: www.westportplayhouse.org  and www.nstudios.org CONGRATS, MICHELLE!

SWEETIE PIE is BACK!

I'm glad "Welcome to Sweetie Pie" is a BIG HIT! And it’s now ushering in the aforementioned Beverly Johnson show into a couplet of success. DON REED’S “THE KIPLING HOTEL”

Now, that's POP CULTURE & POSSIBILITIES, okay!!!? This, after he left Off Broadway with East 14th to have it run for 2 1/2 years in San Francisco and Oakland every single weekend. He has a new show now covering the 80's window of his life - which runs in the Bay Area now - every weekend. "THE SKINNY” EXCLUSIVE

“A Day in the Life of Riley: pop culture & possibilities” is a big fan of PATRIK-IAN POLK and his great work for TV and film – including PUNKS & NOAH’S ARC: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/tag/jensen-atwood. Next up: THE SKINNY! For more info on how you can see the film (FIRST UP: WASHINGTON, DC & ATLANTA)… and more, PLEASE READ ON! THE SKINNY opens Friday, April 6th for an exclusive one-week engagement in Atlanta at the Midtown Art Cinema (931 Monroe Drive, Atlanta, GA 30308) and Washington D.C. at the E Street Cinema (555 11th Street NW, Washington DC 20004) with more cities to follow. We will be having a "Meet and Greet" with the director and the cast on Friday, April 6th at E Street Cinema at 7:30pm and 9:45pm. In Atlanta, we will be having a "Meet and Greet" with Polk and the cast at the Midtown Art Cinema on April 7th at 7:30 and 9:45pm.

From the director of cult classics PUNKS and NOAH'S ARC, comes the much-anticipated third feature film from Patrik-Ian Polk THE SKINNY, a sharply scripted comedy about a group of four young, black, gay men Magnus, Sebastian, Kyle, Joey and their lesbian best friend, Langston. They arrange to meet up in New York City one year after their graduation from Brown University. Their plans for a weekend of fun start off well, relaxed in each other's company as only old friends can be. But old tensions quickly resurface.

Drinking, drugs, hidden desire and the demands of promiscuity put friendship, trust and even lives at risk. In between sharp one-liners and a great soundtrack there's a few important lessons that these pleasure-seekers must learn for themselves. Written with a real sense of the demands of urban living, these bright and believable characters will remind you of someone you know. Remaining true to his past work, Polk addresses issues in THE SKINNY that face the LGBT community such as date-rape, infidelity, and HIV/AIDS awareness.

The film stars Jussie Smolett, Blake Young-Fountain, Anthony Burrell, Shanika Warren-Markland and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman. Supporting cast includes alumnus of Polk's past features such as Darryl Stephens ("Noah's Arc"), Jennia Fredrique ("Noah's Arc"), Wilson Cruz ("Noah's Arc") and Seth Gilliam ("Punks"). Also, the film introduces new actors Dustin Ross and internet sensation B. Scott.

In an exciting partnership, the film has teamed up with the Black AIDS Institute to promote the importance of health in the LGBT Community, especially in the Black and Latino communities.  The Institute will sponsor appearances, receptions and panel discussions in Washington D.C. and Atlanta featuring producer/director Polk and cast members Jussie Smollett, Blake Young-Fountain and Jennia Fredrique (who all appear in the Black AIDS Institute's latest PSA campaign "Greater Than AIDS"). The Skinny director and cast will be on hand to discuss the HIV awareness story-lines in the movie and other sexual health issues of importance to the LGBT population.

"I've been involved with the Black AIDS Institute since the early days of my NOAH'S ARC television series, and I've been addressing issues of HIV and AIDS in my work since my first film PUNKS," Polk explains. "So it makes perfect sense to partner with them to promote their great cause and highlight the HIV awareness issues raised in my new film THE SKINNY."

The film also features music written and performed by Patrik-Ian Polk. With tunes that illustrate the highs and lows of the film, Polk sings with his heart and soul to capture the essence of it all. Polk was inspired by artists such as Grammy-Award winning Adele to "who had created a very personal album based on her romantic experiences," he says. Polk continues to share coyly that, "...most of the songs I wrote, although they fit very nicely in THE SKINNY, are actually about some very personal experiences with...someone very specific."

KIMBERLA LAWSON ROBY

My friend Shandra Hill Smith, with whom I recently reconnected while in Orlando at the Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine hipped me to her client Kimberla Lawson Roby’s news (www.kimroby.com). The ninth installment of her acclaimed Reverend Curtis Black series,  THE REVEREND’S WIFE (Grand Central Publishing; May 1, 2012; $24.99; ISBN 978-0446572477), is scheduled to hit stores May 1, 2012. The New York Times bestselling author tells the story of Reverend Black who discovers his wife, Charlotte, has had not one but two affairs.  “I am incredibly grateful to have experienced such an amazing journey," Roby says. "And to have created a character like the Reverend Curtis Black — one that thousands of readers continue to ask for year after year — this is even more of a blessing. What I hear regularly, too, from readers nationwide is that there is a ‘Reverend Curtis Black’ in every single city in the country, so it feels good writing stories that people can relate to." Roby’s novels — which address true-to-life social issues — have frequented bestseller lists, including The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, ESSENCE and Upscale magazines, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Walmart and many others. Her 13th book and second novella, A DEEP DARK SECRET, was the Essence Book Club Recommended Read by ESSENCE magazine for November 2009. She received the Female Author of the Year award from the African-American Literary Award Show in 2011, 2010, 2009, 2007 and 2006. Among other honors, she also received the 1998 First-Time Author Award from Chicago's Black History Month Book Fair and Conference.

LOUNGIN WITH TONY

Check out my friend Tony Moore’s new website for LOUNGIN WITH TONY (www.lounginwithtony.com). I met him Summer 2009 and just knew he was going to continue to sparkle for us all to see. CONGRATS TONY!

CLASSIC BLACK CINEMA & CAKE

My BFFs, the Porters (Mara Schiavocampo and Tommie Porter AKA Nina’s parents) had us over recently for an impromptu ‘classic Black movie night’ with popcorn, candy, THE BEST CAKE A LA MARA (see picture), and “COMING TO AMERICA”. LAUGHTER IS GREAT MEDICINE. FRIENDS & JUNK FOOD are too! XO PLR— with Tommie Porter, Rakia Clark, Ernest Maynor and Mara Schiavocampo. Maybe now that the SPARKLE trailer is out: http://video.today.msnbc.msn.com/today/46925044, they’ll let us screen the 1976 original. LOL! CONGRATS to my friends Salim Akil and Mara Brock-Akil. As I work with BET's Creative Services team on the network's UP FRONT, I continue to be PROUD and IN AWE of what you both are creating in the way of your LEGACIES for TV and FILM! (For those who don't know, they are the creators of "Girlfriends", "The Game", "Jumping The Broom" (the film), and so much more, including the much-anticipated "Sparkle" remake, which is Whitney Houston's cinematic swan song!

NASHA RASHA

On one free night in New York City, my “Amazing Grace” Nichole Andrews Shellman invited me to join she and our friend Michelle Sanchez Boyce for a CELEBRATORY TOAST & TASTE at Nasha Rasha (http://www.nasharashanyc.com/) – a new concept in authentic Russian dining. It offers authentic Russian small plates meant for sharing and pairing with authentic Russian Vodka and Russian wines. Among its many signatures: bacon-infused vodka and ...horseradish vodka. As Vodka doesn’t agree with me, I still had to try it! INTERESTING!

But hear me: For the vodka lover in you, you can do shots of a selection of over 200 different vodkas. Most of them originals from Russia. And word has it, Nasha Rasha has karaoke on Mondays and Tuesdays. And coincidentally, it’s near one of my favorite karaoke spots in the Flatiron District – so I’m going to have to make sure I pop back by… and check that scene out as well!

MOREHOUSE 20

Ready or not? REUNION 20 from Morehouse College is here! CALLING ALL BRETHREN! www.morehouse1992.com (It seems like our 15 was just yesterday: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/5/22/walking-in-strange-and-new-places.html) Kinda’ started it early with Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts and Spelman sister Tiffanie R. Spearman (visiting NYC from Texas to experience Oprah’s Life Class with Deepak Chopra at Radio City). We had a nourishing chat and chew at Havana Central Times Square: https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Havana-Central-Times-Square/106062046112971. DELICIOUS BEEF EMPANADAS and POMEGRANITE MOJITOS!

THINK LIKE A MAN

Everyone’s abuzz about “THINK LIKE A MAN” which hits theaters April 20th (www.thinklikeaman-movie.com). From the stage to the streets, I’ve had the chance to mingle with many of its leads – from Steve Harvey with whom I’ve collaborated on DISNEY'S DREAMERS ACADEMY WITH STEVE HARVEY & ESSENCE MAGAZINE (just down in Orlando a couple of weeks ago: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/tag/steve-harvey); Taraji P. Henson (at Mary J. Blige’s FFAWN gala – an evening I had the luxury of on-site producing/scripting: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/tag/ffawn); Terrence J (at “The Game” premiere party last year: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2011/1/10/hope-theres-someone.html); and La La Anthony (friend of my friend Po Johnson). These folks and a number of others comprise the cast of “THINK LIKE A MAN” – including Michael Ealy, Regina hall, Jerry Ferrara, Kevin Hart, Romany Malco, Gabrielle Union, Meagan Good, etc. “THINK LIKE A MAN” opens nationwide April 20. Visit the movie online at www.thinklikeaman-movie.com.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

MY HEART IS SO FULL for having lived these 41 years. But to have an awesome man and the best friends and family ever show their LOVE in so many ways makes me feel TRULY LOVED! On the eve of my BDAY, with my college BFF Audrey in tow, I danced into my BDAY at the beautiful New Ro home of Angelique and James Francis. And they were gracious to have some BDAY CAKE for my Scorpio mates and me. On the BDAY itself, my girlfriend Sidra hosted a few friends and me at her Harlem pad for barbecue, drinks, and more BDAY CAKE.For sure, we had a BLAST! On Sunday, I had to work (wrapping production on a sizzle reel for a client), and I stumbled into a SURPRISE BDAY PARTY that Ant had organized with 100 or so of my friends and family (at Bob Bar – WWW.BOBBARNYC.COM). I was popping in for a quick drink and to connect with two of our friends, I was met with a BIG SURPRISE! I heard Miss Ross’ “I’m Coming Out” and planned to run into what I thought was a near-empty lounge. As I prepared to enter – singing “I’m Coming Out” (as if Miss Ross’ famous concert starter), the last laugh was on me as the room erupted in “SURPRISE!!!!”

MY AUDREY

My bonus BDAY gift was having my college BFF Audrey in town for business - all week long. And VOILA! We picked up where we left off. Our HISTORY and LOVE run deep (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/2/18/my-funny-and-diverse-valentine.html). We enjoyed a catch-up meal at SUSHI DAMO before sharing the microphone (when I chose to share it. LOL!) at Japas 55 karaoke. AUDREY & PATRICK back together. Can only mean trouble? Fun and benign though… LMAO!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

BIRTHDAY SHOUT OUT to NYC buddy Andy Diaz who we got to toast recently at TRAFFIC. It is always good to see Diaz and our many mutual friends. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our friend, Elijah. We got to do a MONDAY NIGHT toast and taste with him in Mount Vernon. Also in the house: Cynthia Burgos; Nelson and Michelle Sanchez Boyce(and Mr. Ferro); Nichole Andrews Shellman; Angelique Francis; Chenoa Maxwell;Keith Kennerly; and many more! FUN NIGHT! HAPPY BDAY TO ALL OF THE SAGITARIUS & CAPRICORN BABIES OUT THERE!

BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE

Shout out to the journalism students at Bloomfield College in New Jersey. They ROCK! So does their professor Karyn Collins, my NABJ sister who invited me to speak to them about my career and tips for their step into our industry. I trust that many from this impressive crop promise to be among our most esteemed media professionals. Another of their professors (and – like Karyn – a fellow freelance AND independent hustler in this industry) Nicole Franklin popped by on the end of my speech (She teaches these students as well). It may be cliché, but I do “...believe the children are the future...” and what a bright and blinding one ahead for my new Bloomfield College friends.

KIM COLES

Nothing could stop me from spending some time with my girlfriend Kim Coles when she called to say she was in town and had a window in which she hoped I could join her for a little chat & chew. She also asked me to bring Ant and our BFF Theo Perry along. We chose Vnyl on 9th Avenue between 51st and 52nd (Chicken Nachos and Margaritas, anyone?). From there: Sushi Damo. Then, a quick visit to the Shea Moisture pop-up store in Bryant Park (http://sheamoisture.com/).

THE LINKS, INCORPORATED

Went to DC recently for the 65th Anniversary GALA – celebrating The Links, Incorporated. It was EXCITING to see the labor of my LOVE for the last few weeks on the big presentation screens at the event (Marriott Wardman Park). I had a great time! The well-appointed evening put me face-to-face with Sherri Blount Gray and the many Links with whom I had the chance to work via BET, media partner for the evening.I produced the video/graphic elements for its evening - featuring friend Lynn Whitfield (and her beautiful voice on each piece I produced); Will Downing (performing); and hosts Tim Reid & his wife Daphne Reid! EBONY was honored and Linda Johnson-Rice was there to accept (along with John son Publishing CEO Desiree Rogers). CONGRATULATIONS ON 65 YEARS! XO

DC

Though time didn’t allow me to check out the MLK National Monument, I did get long-overdue catch-up with my chosen family/dearest friends Latecia Engram (BFFs since 7th grade); my little brother (“nephew”, I call him) Brian Henderson; and Lisa Goodnight, hubby Lex, and their little man Alejandro (HAPPY 1-YEAR BIRTHDAY, YOUNG MAN!). I LOVE Y'ALL!

CUP

Shout out to James & Angelique Francis for inviting me to accompany my BFF/Amazing Grace Nichole Shellman to an event that was put on by the Council of Urban Professionals. It was the 3rd Annual MEDIA & ENTERTAINMENT FORUM. The dinner program brought me face-to-face with a most impressive group of pros who – through CUP – connect, empower, and mobilize the next generation of diverse business and civic leaders. After a well-appointed meet-and-greet n the SoHi Room at the SOHO Trump Hotel, we gathered for dinner as we learned from and enjoyed industry leaders Keith Clinkscales; Christina Norman; Sivonne Davis; and Steve Stoute wax philosophical about the changing landscape of the entertainment business and what that means to the consumer. GREAT NETWORKING NIGHT!

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN

Sans a few of my favorites - like "Heart Attack"; "Twist of Fate"; "Livin' In Desperate Times"; and "Take A Chance", MISS OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN turned out all of her greatest hits for us recently at Westbury Music Fair. In the legendary round, she brought great voice; her PHYSICAL beauty which has held up; and a historic repertoire that includes the UK-imported Country & Western the Aussie initially came to the States singing; her big soundtrack hits (from Xanadu to Grease); her '80s blockbusters; and some of her more recent covers and new age tracks. She chatted the audience up between songs as if she was talking to her old friends. And her old friends - Ernest Maynor, Danielle Andrea Simone Knight, and I - were in the cut - hopelessly devoted to OUR OLIVIA! Ant enjoyed too.

HANNA LEE & CAMPARI

Tribeca’s Silver Lining, was the backdrop for a party that my friend Hanna Lee hosted recently. She invited Ant and me to come by as it was our - GASP! - 6th Anniversary of being together. In the house: Darryl "Mixologist" Robinson; my girlfriend and colleague Janet Lee whose book "Living in a Nutshell: Posh and Portable Decorating Ideas for Small Spaces" will be out in the Spring of 2012 (http://harpercollins.ca/books/Living-Nutshell-Janet-Lee/?isbn=9780062060693).  Janet is the best and throws an AWESOME cocktail set (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/15/butterflies-begin-from-having-been-another.html). One of those sets had me modeling in OUT magazine with one of her guests, Food Network host and Semi-homemade diva Miss Sandra Lee whose PR team includes my friend Audra Boltion (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/7/28/im-so-glad-we-had-this-time-together.html).

NYABJ'S NEW DAY

After the Campari set, we stopped by the New York Association of Black Journalists' Pre-Election Mixer at The Park Restaurant. My friend and fellow NABJ baby Mike Feeney was running for President (http://feeneyfornyabjpres.tumblr.com/) and we wanted to make sure he knows he has our support. GO MIKE or shall I say: MR. PRESIDENT! HE WON!

"STICK FLY"

My ATL friend Kenny Leon (who actually directed me at a CAU Coronation while I was at Morehouse) tapped me on my shoulder as I was walking into The Cort Theatre to see his latest Broadway impression "Stick Fly" - starring Tony-award-winning Ruben Santiago Hudson; Mekhi Phifer; Dule Hill; daughter of Phylicia Rashad, Condola; Tracie Thomas; and more. Alicia Keys is one of the producers. And I enjoyed it. Special nods to Ruben and Condola! POWERFUL PERFORMANCES! Please be sure to check it out!

WILSON CRUZ

At the end of a recent long edit (for The Wendy Williams Show) – a piece that will be seen in mid-December, I grabbed a quick bite at VNYL (chicken nachos). Sitting at the table next to me was a piece of pop culture “dessert”: Wilson Cruz, who I knew from his role on “Noah’s Arc”. He’s also played Angel in “Rent” on Broadway (1998) and earlier this year, we saw him in “Single Ladies” on VH1. And what a nice guy he was/is…

DANISH KRINGLE

After a long day of edit for client The Wendy Williams Show, I popped by Bamboo 52; Club Therapy; Industry; then Japas 55 Karaoke, where my nephew Herman Lee Riley III and his friend Phil popped by for some karaoke. The following morning, I awoke to a sweet Danish Kringle (www.ohdanishbakery.com/Kringles) that came via Fed Ex from my friend Marcie Eanes. She's my NABJ sister and a writer/poet ("Sensual Sounds" - http://www.amazon.com/Sensual-Sounds-collection-Marcie-Eanes/dp/1440192855) from Racine, Wisconsin where this delicious treat is among President Obama's favorite things. I know why. It's DELICIOUS! THANKS MARCIE!

THOROUGHLY MODERN PEOPLE

And our NYC BFF Sidra Smith is always hosting something FABULOUS in Harlem (and all around the world, for that matter). Nectar Wine Bar on 120th and Frederick Douglas Blvd was the back-drop for a recent book-signing she put together. The book? Chima Njoku-Latty's "Thoroughly Modern People: The Long Way Home" (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thoroughly-Modern-People-Long-Home/dp/0956600107).

RED ROOSTER & ROSS

On this same night, we all gathered at "Red Rooster" for food & more toasts. In the house: Gordon Chambers (whose new album "SINCERE" is out and - like all of his material - FABULOUS (http://gordonchambers.com/). His gig last week had him on the same bill as Miss Ross at Reginald Van Lee's wedding last week in DC (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2a-vgZePSww&feature=related). COOL, right? You'll recall my ROSS encounter a few weeks back in NYC: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2011/10/5/miss-ross-called-me.html.  http://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/wedding-of-the-year/2d426db42cd8d6d3.html  CONGRATS to Mr. Reginald Van Lee and his now-husband Corey L. McCathern.

VH1 DIVAS

http://www.vh1.com/music/tuner/2011-12-19/vh1-divas-celebrates-soul-keep-me-hanging-on/?xrs=synd_google Did you see VH1 DIVAS 2011? A pair of tickets evaded me. But I’ve touched shoulder pads with most of the line-up anyway: Mary J. Blige. Jennifer Hudson (who sang – among many tunes – “Night of Your Life”, the David Guetta on which she’s featured and on which my Morehouse brother and friend Anthony Welborn Preston co-wrote).  Jill Scott.  Chaka Khan.  Erykah Badu. Ledisi. Estelle. Marsha Ambrosius. Martha Reeves. Though Miss Ross was missing, her legacy was not. Kelly Clarkson, Mary J., and J-Hud did “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” off the top… and there were other references throughout. And Miss Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah were in the house along with quite an impressive roster of performers – old and new. I - of course - will NEVER forget VH1 DIVAS 2000: A TRIBUTE TO DIANA ROSS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aVOI3SFpH4 And now the GRAMMYS have gotten it right as it has just been announced that MISS ROSS will receive her long-overdue LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT GRAMMY in February (www.grammy.com). CONGRATS, MISS ROSS!!!!

BVI

Last month, I got the chance to field produce Wendy Williams in the British Virgin Islands. Part 1: http://www.wendyshow.com/2011/10/24/british-virgin-islands/  Part 2: http://www.wendyshow.com/2011/10/26/british-virgin-islands-food/  Keeping the BDAY spirit going, I accepted an invitation from my friends at the BVI TOURIST BOARD to attend a NYC-based set at Tian at The Riverbank State Park here in NYC. Sidra Smith accompanied me. Ran into girlfriend Africa while there. And my BVI BFFs Lynette Harrigan and Kevis Hughes were in the house. Meanwhile, I have another piece I've produced for 'Wendy' - an integration marketing segment with "Family Dollar": http://www.wendyshow.com/2011/12/16/family-dollar-holiday-dash/.

CASSIE FREEMAN

So many friends doing wonderful things! And I'm trying to patronize all of it - because I LOVE them AND I am 'pop culture & possibilities'. Cassie Freeman? 2011 Sundance Film Festival audience award-winning KINYARWANDA came to town. Cassie invited us out to see it. NAPIERA GROVES

I first became acquainted with Napiera Groves via "As The World Turns" (She played daughter to my now-friend Tamara Tunie's character Jessica Griffin & nemesis to her TV mom's boo (for a minute as played by Lamman Rucker, Marshall Travers). Then, we met socially and hit it off. Then, she came and sang at my ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT late last year. Now, she has a new single on I-TUNES (and her music video has dropped: http://youtu.be/D9Dcbi-IIKo). Please check it out (and listen to those lyrics). Napiera Groves is a FORCE: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/force/id487948881?i=487948885.  CONGRATS!!!

KENNY CARR

I want to make sure I tell you about something that one of my friends Kenneth Carr has done...in case you're a music lover and/or shopping around for stocking stuffers. He wrote, produced, and is featured on "The Seal Breakers" (which recorded in NJ at the studio home of THE LEGENDARY Tony Bennett). This anointed project is available on I-Tunes; CD Baby; and AMAZON. Kenny is my dear girlfriend Shareen King's boo (She is my co-hort on all things "Monica: Still Standing" & "Frankie & Neffe"). Kenny and I have grown close since that time...and I'm SO PROUD OF HIM! He's such a talent and - take my word - this project is one you will enjoy from start to finish! CONTINUED BLESSINGS, MY FRIEND! STANLEY BENNETT CLAY

Shout out to my friend Stanley Bennett Clay! We got the chance to see his play (which he wrote and in which he stars) "ARMSTRONG'S KID"! The premise? THE GAY SCHOOL TEACHER! THE FALSE ACCUSATION! THE FINAL SHOWDOWN! According to award-winning actress Loretta Devine, "THIS SHOULD BE ON BROADWAY!" I AGREE! If you are in NYC, please don't miss it...and if you are not in NYC, look for it in a city near you (before it heads back to Broadway)! http://www.smarttix.com/show.aspx?showcode=ARM2

THANKSGIVING

Speaking of tasty food and quality TV, we spent Thanksgiving at our girlfriend Mara Schiavocampo's Harlem home.  She shares the beautiful space with her husband Tommie; and Sasha and Kirby - their two fur children.  They are our favorite couple and we get to enjoy a lovely meal with their parents and a few other orphans who didn't go to the homes of their blood families. My nephew and his Morehouse buddy Phil joined us as well. WE ARE FAMILY! We did an encore meal with Mara and Tommie (sans the parents this time) that Thanksgiving weekend  - enjoying my favorite Houston's/Hillstone's. Also on Thanksgiving, we did an after-set at the home of hostess-with-the-most Cy Lauz!!

Counting down to the annual holiday commute home. (In my case, to Georgia: Atlanta and Savannah). I hadn’t gotten my Christmas spirit on yet, but trust it to come. The other night, my girlfriend Tata’s tree-trimming started to thaw me out when I was surprised with my other BFF Chandra Jones and my little buddy Gavin, her son. Also in the house: A host of our friends and family in common. GREAT WAY TO TOAST THE HOLIDAY!
