I am so happy for him. He’s been nominated for two GRAMMYs. When our iconic artists fall off, comebacks are often hard to come by. It’s like an equation: a new record deal and/or concert tour have to meet the right marketing/publicity machine and the public interest at the pass. But the TALENT or some modicum of the talent must still be there. It seems that all the stars have aligned for El’s SECOND CHANCE – including that AMAZING VOICE which is back in full… and I couldn’t be happier for him. He’s on a major label – INTERSCOPE/GEFFEN (which is also Mary J. Blige’s label). That means he’s got the support and the team behind him. I’ve met his management team – KINGS OF LA – including legendary music executive Pete Farmer and his wife Pam. They are not only ensuring that he gets the bookings and the notices, but they are taking care of El: mind, body, and soul. The music on “Second Chance” is as CLASSIC DEBARGE as it is RELEVANT & RADIO-FRIENDLY! El has collaborated with only the best – from  Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis & Babyface in addition to collaborating with current hip-hoppers 50 Cent and Fabolous as well as a classic R&B duet with our beloved Faith Evans. His first TV appearance on the BET AWARDS was a surprise… and what a reveal! He not only sang the greatest hits (about six of them), but he also introduced the title track: “Second Chance” which offers up a dose of testimonial and humility that audiences LOVE! And let’s not forget: The DEBARGE Dynasty is ICONIC. Not necessarily prolific as their troubles unfortunately have dwarfed their ability to crank out lots of music over the years. TERRY MCMILLAN – FELA!

So ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT is still going strong. Though we’ll take a break on the THURSDAY before Christmas, we will – for sure – be back up and running on the THURSDAY before New Year’s (12/30). NATIVE RESTAURANT is the spot. It’s on Lenox Avenue and 118^th Street from 9pm to MIDNIGHT. Based on our last two weeks, we’ve had some sparkle in the house: My friend Kevin-Anthony’s client B. Slade (formerly known as Tonex) whose electrifying performance I’d just seen earlier in the evening at Joe’s Pub (The FAB Kimberly Nichole opened with my friend Darius Booker on the best background ever). AKHENATEN’S BLACK POP SERIES #1: includes a collection of popular images from African American culture that speak to iconic black impressions in popular media.  The first installment of this body of work is made up of a collection of 9 abstract expressionistic paintings created by thick textured brush strokes on miniature canvas.  These images can be juxtaposed with the work of artists such as Clementine Hunter and Jean Michelle Basquiat whose work has been coined as “Primitive Art” in the context of art history based on its free and relatively flat aesthetic and non-traditional use of surface.  The surfaces in which these images reside have been assembled in the form of refrigerator magnets which add to its pop appeal.

“Good Times” is such a muse, we were so excited that our girl Sidra snagged those two. Plus, because of TV ONE, I’ve been watching a lot more of it of late. Shout out to my friend Stanley Bennett Clay (pictured left). His 1975 episode of "Good Times" was on recently.  He portrayed Jimmy Pearson - the new politician in town who got bested by incumbent crook Alderman Davis (the intro of a recurring character on the show). Fast forward to 2010: STANLEY is a WINNING WRITER EXTRAORDINAIRE! LUV U, STANLEY! And LOVE MY GOOD TIMES! Also, a recent installment "Good Times" highlighted Wilona (Ja’Net Dubois). I met her last year while working in L.A. for a stretch that also included the chance to be a guest of Miss Aretha Franklin at The Hollywood Bowl & The Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. Sending PRAYERS to THE QUEEN for a speedy recovery, by the way! And Debbie Allen was just in an episode as J.J.s girlfriend/fiance. She played a dope addict. It was a fierce two-parter.

KENNEDY CENTER 2011

I had the chance - in 1991 - to perform on the KENNEDY CENTER HONORS with the Morehouse College Glee Club. We were there to honor Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus Composer and Conductor Robert Shaw. DIANNE SMITH

I met Dianne Smith (www.diannesmithart.com) recently when Sid did her swap party for “The Nate Berkus Show”.  She invited us to her home where she features 900 pieces of her work – from paintings to sculpture. What a talented artist and chef.  The Harlem-based artist surely knows her way around turkey pot pie & pound cake….  

TICHINA ARNOLD GIVES BACK

We got to escort Tichina Arnold – in town starring in LOVE, LOSS, & WHAT I WORE – to the Harlem Lanes. She graciously agreed to pop by and say HI to 43 young, Fairfax, Virginia, African American high school males from a Mount Vernon High School program called Men With Vision and Purpose (Our friend Jacquie Lee and Nardos Brown – the principal – created this test pilot program to close the achievement gap among African American males between the ages of 16 - 18. These young men get an incentive at the beginning of the school year to bring their grades up to a 2.5 and above average in order to experience an immersion to New York City to meet affluent African American male Executives of the corporate, entertainment and sport industries. Forty-three out of the sixty three young males met the challenge which was a major feat. CONGRATS, FELLAS!)

TREE TRIMMING: PART ONE

My boy Murphy invited us out for a tree-trimming in Harlem – well-appointed with food; drink; and cheer! Imagine Sid’s, Ant’s and my excitement when our friends Scott and Tony from L.A. called to say they were in town (Scott works alongside Sheryl Lee Ralph). We invited them on up to join in the fun….

2R HOLIDAY APPRECIATION

Then, 2R’s Entertainment & Media PR “Holiday Appreciation Party” was a lot of fun! CONGRATS to Robbie, Ra-Fael, and their star clientele – including my favorite MIGUEL PERDOMO, Supermodel with the most. Great to see Robert, Kevin-Anthony, Bariek, and the rest of the gang.

TREE TRIMMING: PART TWO

One recent Saturday, HARLEM came a calling – from Native (with Ary, Rick, & Irie); then, another set w/a host of new friends – including Ron; Brandye; model Julian Sapp (featured in Beyonce’s current DVD); and others. Tata joined us there and continued on to Seitu’s tree trimming. And can I tell you he had the best friend chicken wings this side of The Hudson. Miss Nina Flowers and the gang were in the house too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Friends Karen Good & Andy Diaz celebrated their birthdays on one SATURDAY night. Karen – in Brooklyn – is my Savannah homeboy Maurice’s fiancé. He choreographed an awesome surprise for her. In the house, some of my favorite Savannah home folks – including Joicelyn; and Rae. We were all close friends in Savannah and remain friends to this day while we are all in New York. Always a pleasure to see my homegirls. And now Karen is added to the Savannah posse. And DIAZ’s set was at NATIVE.

GIRLS WHO LIKE BOYS WHO LIKE BOYS

I joined my friend Nathan for the premiere of his “Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys” (on the Sundance channel) at SPLASH. (My book project “Big Willies & Amazing Graces: gay men and their best girlfriends” still hasn’t been sold… but the green-lighting of the project gives me hope.) CONGRATS to Nathan and Crystal!!!! LOVE Y'ALL! CRUISE

KANDI KOATED LOVE

So you may recall that my spring and summer in Atlanta gave me access to the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” – including Kandi. I just want to shout out her new album “Kandi Koated” on Asylum/Warner Bros. The Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, and television star has been busy as a bee of late. She recently shot a video for "Haven't Loved Right" in honor of her ex-fiancé, AJ, who senselessly died in Atlanta a little over a year ago. And she joined forces with Carol's Daughter – in NYC and ATL – to launch her project. "The album is about love, relationships. It's meeting someone.  Falling for them. Falling out with them. Breaking up with them. Thinking about them. Getting back together. Moving on. It's all there," she says of the self-penned project, except for "Me and You," written and produced by Ne-Yo, and sampling the Outkast classic "Elevators."

HALLE BERRY

Last year, I was trying to shake off the effects of having been one of the producers on “Frankie & Neffe”. This year, with friend Theo’s nudging, Halle Berry invited me to join her at a special screening of her upcoming feature film “Frankie & Alice” in which the Academy-award winner seems to be going for her sophomore prize. Coincidentally, she plays Savannah, Georgia native Frankie Murdoch who suffered with multiple personality disorder in early ‘70s Los Angeles. Her mom is “For Colored Girls”-own Phylicia Rashad and her sister is “Grey’s Anatomy”s Chandra Wilson… but Halle plays ALL the colored girls and then some in this psychological drama. I was able to bring my nephew Herman – a Savannah native – along with me and in addition to my dear friends Karu, Marcia, and Yvette, Ant, Herman (Noot I call him), and I got to enjoy the company of Ms. Halle (who was ever-gracious and present to when I first interviewed her in ’95); the legendary Ruby Dee; Ruben Santiago Hudson (“Lackawanna Blues”); supermodel Roshumba; celeb hairstylist Niko; and a cool, intimate crowd that celebrated the film at Rouge Tomate for wine and hors d’oeuvres – including THE MAXWELL who couldn’t have been nicer, though that 2nd flash on the camera got him every time. LOL! FUN NIGHT! My girl Anika Noni Rose was there too. EL DEBARGE

In the wake of the 40TH BDAY FESTIVITIES (more details below), I was met with a busy week of CELEBRATING EL DEBARGE’s SECOND CHANCE. I first got to see my buddy El Debarge perform at “The Wendy Williams Show” w/my friends Ern & Sidra in tow. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCEs(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KO1BCYScCXE). For this performance, El sang for Wendy’s dance contest – won by this spry couple. This, the morning after Team El took me out for BDAY drinks. Shout out to MY SHELLY & MY PAM! Then, Sid and I enjoyed an early dinner at Brazil Brazil Restaurant on Restaurant Row – a stone’s throw from my old performance stage “Don’t Tell Mama”. Supermodel Kara Young and celebrity stylist Dickey, the co-founders of the innovative hair care brand and NY-based salon called Hair Rules, hosted a party to celebrate the launch of their first billboard in Times Square. The private event at Vivid Lounge (The Renaissance Hotel) included guests supermodel/writer Veronica Webb; Russell Simmons; Former Miss Tanzania and Model Millen Magese; stylist/TV personality Philip Bloch; Annabella Sciorro (of “Jungle Fever” fame) and a host of others. Wanted to go to Beyonce’s celebration of her line of jewelry from Lorraine Schwartz, but scheduling didn’t allow. My nephew, however, snagged this red-carpet ready shot and more.

Then, El and his folks invited me to a couple of sets centered around CELEBRATING his SECOND CHANCE – the highly-anticipated CD that is out this week. One event was at SLATE. He and his management team – including my Pete and Pam – were in the house along with the executives at Interscope. His special guest was TLC’s Chilli, who I knew at the start and peak of her TLC career. We have friends in common who attended Georgia Southern University and Morehouse College at the time we attended both of them. Then, once I got my B.A. and she got her T.L.C., I got the chance to interview her via my 2^nd career gig at FOX 5s “Good Day Atlanta”. She was so warm and nostalgic for all those things we have in common. Lovely to talk to her! This, while El grabbed the venue’s mic and sang along not only to his new tracks, which are OFF-THE-CHAIN GREAT, but he danced down memory lane – singing along to tracks like “Rhythm of the Night” and “Who’s Johnny?” as well as the legendary ballads and mid-tempos.  Afterwards, we joined our buddy Carl at NATIVE owner Brian’s other spot NO PARKING which does a fabulous KARAOKE MONDAY night with host TREVOR and shared regulars – including Darius Booker! I sang a few tunes as well.

The Highline Ballroom hosted El Debarge’s release party last night! It was a full-fledged concert!!! Doug E. Fresh even joined in for an inspired and nostalgic, free-style moment! EL IS BACK, Y’ALL! Go pick up his CD now! IT’S GREAT! And his VOICE is still pristine. www.facebook.com/ElDeBarge

I’m always talking or blogging about my dear friend and Co-Chair for the NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force Greg Dunmore. Well, he was in town recently with good news that brings him back to town. His mom, jazzy cabaret pianist and singer, Ms. Jo Thompson – who Greg manages – is bringing her show to NYC. Musical Director Walt Szymanski will lead 8 of New York's hottest jazz musicians alongside Miss Jo and they all will be appearing in New York City this Saturday December 4th at the City Museum of New York which in on Fifth Ave. between East 103rd and 104th Streets. Showtime: 2:00PM in the afternoon. (I know, it’s the same time as my event… but these are the options that “… the life of Riley…” provides).

Jo Thompson’s show: Thank You Lena!!! is a complement to the museum’s current exhibition: Notorious & Notable (which is a salute to some of New York City’s most legendary ladies in which Lena Horne is one of the fabulous females being spotlighted!)

The show is free with admissions into the museum. Therefore, it is a wonderful yet inexpensive way to support the museum and spend a delightful Saturday in Manhattan!!!

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

With my best girlfriend Nichole being a New Rochelle resident, I spend lots of time there with Nichole and her friends. Good girlfriend Michelle Sanchez-Boyce invited me to host “An Evening to Benefit The Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle” at Top of The Roc II at Avalon on the Sound East. It was a GREAT NIGHT with many of my fabulous New Ro friends in the house. The food was delicious… and the wine was flowing. But most importantly, I got to turn our silent auction items into LIVE auction items, which brought the room to life and allowed me to do my part in raising a lot of money for the kids… and that’s just what we did! MISS ROSS IN VEGAS

Miss Ross exclaims "IT'S MY HOUSE!" by throwing an AWESOME show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas - her first time performing at the entertainment mecca she helped build with her record-breaking shows in the '70s and the '80s. I should have better prepared and had this be my 40TH KICKOFF… but the RAVE REVIEWS Miss Ross got for her two sold-out shows was gift enough!

BIRTHDAY COUNT-DOWN

MEANWHILE, it’s always a CELEBRATION in “… the life of Riley…” We continue to have great ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTs at NATIVE RESTAURANT from 9pm – 12 MIDNIGHT (LENOX AVENUE & 118^TH Street). One week , my favorite boutique N held a “For Colored Girls”-inspired pre-karaoke set. That same night, fellow Scorpio girlfriend Sonjiya came from Miami (with her friend Troy) to celebrate her birthday. Many other friends were in the house: Eric, Robert, Sidra, Bariek, Nichole, Brian, Jasmine, Turquoise, Charlie Brown, Dard, Craig, Trevor, Charlie T, Danielle, April, Nathan, Keith, Harlem’s Anthony, and a host of others. GREAT SINGING! GREAT SONGS!

EVE OF 40^TH BDAY

The next week was the big EVE OF THE 40^TH BDAY CELEBRATION!!!! The place was even more packed than usual! BIG THANKS to all who came out to celebrate my LAST DAY OF BEING 39 last night for ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURS...DAY NIGHT at NATIVE! It was a PACKED HOUSE - FILLED WITH LOVE! We had to stretch the night beyond MIDNIGHT's wrap to almost 2 A--M. TONIGHT, many of my NYC family & friends will take me out to CELEBRATE further! It's a 40TH BDAY EXTRAVAGANZA after all (LOL!) - poised to go through 2011 (pending when I can step foot off of these domestic shores for a vacation abroad. SOMEWHERE!).

THE BIRTHDAY

On my actual birthday, a small group of friends gathered at the Harlem home of my friends Mara Schiavocampo and Tommie Porter. It was a well-appointed and whimsical BDAY cocktail hour w/party hats & favors to boot; DIANA ROSS piping from the speakers; great spread – including my favorite pasta by Sidra who came by as did my Amazing Grace Nichole; Jamar; and MY Devon. They were my gifts. But there were also gifts – including the 25TH Anniversary DVD Collection of “The Cosby Show” – a staple when we often visit Mara & Tommie; Ant also provided them a pic of me that they framed (It’s of me cleaning MISS ROSS’ star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame from last year); etc.

Then, with some help from our friend Nikki, MY Ant pulled out all the stops at GRIFFIN. The FAB set - in the meatpacking district of Downtown Manhattan - had me feeling like a rock star... and partying like one too: champagne & Patron were flowing; we danced all night long; there was a lovely spread of appetizers. They were engineered by my friend Derek K. Corley’s company “Nadia’s SPICE KITCHEN” (www.NadiasSpiceKitchen.com); and a host of my family and friends came out to toast me. And everybody got in on the fun – including my nephew Herman. He came with an entourage of my little brothers and sisters. They are recent alums from my nephew’s and my alma mater Morehouse and its sister college Spelman. (By the way, ANT: THANK YOU! I LOVE YOU!) BIRTHDAY WEEKEND

On the Sunday of the weekend, I managed to get up for a FAB SUNDAY BDAY BRUNCH that Ant took me to at Monalito, our new favorite brunch spot (as owned by Cristina, nanny to Miss Ross’ three girls in the ‘80s). My buddies Robert & Dawn joined us along with my nephew (and fellow Morehouse brother) Herman (Noot I call him). From (black bean) soup to an awesome omelette to some tiramisu (and don’t forget the sangrias & the mojitos), we all loved our meal. Afterwards, Ant & I joined our girlfriend Dawn at her Brooklyn pad for champagne and Cake Man Raven red velvet cake (and You Tube clips of Miss Ross. Also, MISS “PRETTY GIRL ROCK” herself: Keri Hilson - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtXOVKNazYU. Brunch at Monalito was so good, we did it again the following Sunday. This time, with friends Sidra, Murphy, Eric, Tracy, Cynthia, Greg, and Ant. From there, more hanging in Harlem where Cynthia shared with us her new profile in Black Enterprise - promoting her work as a fledgling fine artist. Go Cynthia, Go!

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT

My passion for KARAOKE produced an interesting turn of events. Ant led us to Pulse Karaoke where a phantom scout from “America’s Got Talent” was to be present in the house. After I sang a few numbers, the scout approached me and said she is referring me to the “America’s Got Talent” folks. So with my karaoke persona in tow, I got a call from one of the producers to see if I could come in for a scheduled appointment during their Javitz-Convention-Center based audition. I made it through the two rounds that the NYC stop offered and am now to wait for a call that may come in March to signal me to L.A. The scout came up to me after I sang "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" (now a staple at karaoke for me) - so I performed that (with background instrumentation) and when asked to do an uptempo/current number, I did an a cappella "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga. For the final round - in front of producers and the "America's Got Talent" backdrop, they requested the same. STAY TUNED. Meanwhile, business as usual. I'll only know I made it to next round if they call. If I didn't, I'll keep on truckin' - like I do...

THANK YOU FOR THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE!

Of course, the BDAY EXTRAVAGANZA continued into THANKSGIVING. I did a lovely and long-overdue lunch at Houston’s with my TaTa. BDAY cocktails at UNO in Yonkers with my childhood BFF and Spelman sister Tish brought a smile to my face. We also did a cocktail at The Hudson Terrace. Then, Japas 55 for karaoke. Then, “The Rocket” at Quo Nightclub. FUN TIMES!

And THANKSGIVING was special! Our HAPPY THANKSGIVING was hosted by our buddies Charlie T and Danielle. We invited our friends Toby and Sidra (and Paul) to join us. And what a GREAT TIME it was as we ate some tasty food and watched "The Wiz"; Beyonce's ABC special; a "Supremes" collection of performances; and more.

FOR COLORED GIRLS

Have seen “For Colored Girls” twice now. It’s Tyler Perry’s upcoming film which marries the classic-Ntozake-Shange poem (circa 1974) with something like “Crash” to AMAZING EFFECT! Kudos to Janet Jackson and the rest of this AMAZING CAST - including Loretta Devine; Kimberly Elise; Thandie Newton; Phylicia Rashad; Anika Noni-Rose; Kerry Washington; Macy Gray; and Whoopi Goldberg who clearly reminded everyone not to get it twisted. More than a “View” host, “I am an Academy-Award-winning actress, dammit!” (My thought). And many others may be up for the golden prize – including Mr. Perry for his stellar craftsmanship in adapting this classic, Obie-and-Tony-award-winning choreo-poem (by Ntozake Shange) into an AWESOME cinematic treasure. It’s deep – even heavy. But what a ride!

Now, you know Janet is Ant's girl. And he's had several chances to be an intimate audience with Miss Jackson. Me too. At "Why Did I Get Married?" premieres (both). And some other places, too. But the excitement never wears off for him. And as I LOVE JANET too, I get as excited. (NOTE: MISS ROSS?? I'M READY FOR MY CLOSE-UP... WITH YOU!!!! LOL!).

One way here in NYC that we got to celebrate: Tim Palen’s “FOR COLORED GIRLS: Living Portraits - Opening Night Reception Hosted by Janet Jackson” at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery. Miss Jackson – who I’ve interviewed before and with whom I have chatted socially – received us warmly. She was very present and always seems to remember me. Some of her co-stars were also in the house – including Loretta Devine; Kimberly Elise; Thandie Newton; friend Anika Noni Rose; Kerry Washington; Khalil Kain; and Tessa Thompson.  And Ntozake Shange, the original writer of the award-winning choreopoem “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf” (on which Tyler Perry adapted his film), also attended along my other industry friends and associates Phillip Bloch (Current book: “The Shopping Diet: Spend Less and Get More”); Star Jones (“Celebrity Apprentice”); and the “Precious” film director Lee Daniels; Bruce with Sheridan radio; and my girls from Red Sea Entertainment, Miss Anna and Miss Tagan – both of whom are absolutely THE BEST!

The World Premiere of “For Colored Girls…” took place last night at The Ziegfeld Theater. Sid, Ant, Michael, Mario, and a host of others enjoyed yet another night with Miss Jackson and the amazing cast of talented women and men (including my homeboy, Savannah’s own Omari Hardwick, who played opposite Miss Jackson). Afterwards, a virtual WHO’S WHO poured into The Oak Room at The Plaza Hotel – including my buddy, ABC 7’s Sandra Bookman; my CJ; BET’s Ed Gordon; Janet’s nephew Austin Brown (only boy of her oldest sister Rebbie. His album ‘85’ is scheduled to be released in 2011 – www.austinbrown.com); our Ledisi; America’s Next Top Model’s Ya-Ya; Miss Niecy Nash; my Bridget, Karu, Kevin-Anthony, and on and on, I could go. GREAT NIGHT!

CONGRATS TO EVERYBODY!

ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS

I got to work on something with Jon Stewart on one of my All-Star Karaoke Thursday Nights. But he got me out in time to get to my Thursday gig at Native Restaurant on Lenox Avenue @ 118th Street from 9pm-MIDNIGHT. Shout out to my girl Sidra who – one week - filled in on the ONE-TWOs when Ant was under the weather. And THANKS to the many, many ALL-STARs who keep coming out - from near and far.Last week’s LOVE FEST included some INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR. My dear friend, soul music historian, journalist, author, founder of Soul Music.com, singer, and record producer David Nathan (and his alter ego “Nefer Davis”) came from the U-K for Dionne Warwick’s 50th Anniversary and – with his friends in tow – he came to sing for my night. From Dionne’s “Alfie” to Aretha’s “Think” (and a Coldplay number), he ROCK’d (and SOUL’d!). Another friend, singer/songwriter Anise White (www.iamanise.com) blew the roof off the place with Lisa Stansfield’s “Been Around The World”. And our ALL-STAR regulars showed up and out i.e. Brian, Rick, Troy, Anthony, Turquoise, Jasmine, etc. Plus, “The Professor” gave us a great harmonica solo in the wake of his recent Apollo appearance… and friend Mica (whose working on some new music in the studio) popped by and gave us a serving of her fab brand of pop. And my ALL-STAR friends came out in full-force – including Sidra, Craig, Nichole (with new friend Eva from Dallas), Toby, glam god Q, Jacquie Lee (with client CJ Miller. He is author [“Grind: How to Turn Your Coffee Break into your Big Break”]/motivational speaker/reality co-star [Tyra Banks’ “True Beauty” & Omarosa’s “Ultimate Merger”]; my Kim (and her posse – all from Oakland and other Bay Area spots); Harlem promoter Bill Foster; my “girl” Cynthia Burgos – artist extraordinaire whose work of acrylic, oil, sand, and glitter portrays the iconic Oprah inside an exhibit, "25 Years of Oprah," that is presented by the New York African American Historical Society. DIANA ROSS PLAYGROUND

Our girlfriend Sidra invited us to Manolito for Sunday brunch recently.

Turns out the owner Cristina was hired by my idol Diana Ross to be nanny to her - at the time - three children Rhonda, Tracee, and Chudney (circa 1983). Though she spoke diplomatically as someone who likely signed a confidentiality agreement, she did confirm what was going on professionally with Miss Ross at that time. Of course, I gave her the options. After Motown 25?

Before Central Park? While she was on the road with the "For One, For All" tour? Were Arthur - the driver, and Geneva - the cook, on staff at the time? It all begged the question: "How do I know all of this stuff? LOL!" The lovely chat inspired information about The Diana Ross Playground - the beneficiary from Diana's pockets and whatever proceeds came from the sale of merch at her FREE Central Park concerts.

Sid didn't know that there was a Diana Ross Playground - so we took her.

All of us – including Murphy – walked through Central Park to the Diana Ross Playground - partially via bike.

We even walked by The Dalton School where the Ross charges attended school here in Manhattan alongside many of the rich and famous offspring.

And we HAD FUN (AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN)... just like little children. THANKS to MISS ROSS for a playground that I'm certain has brought JOY to millions of kids. And some adults too! LOL!

ALVIN & FRIENDS – INCLUDING RUBY DEE & "REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DC"S PAUL WHARTON

Had a great evening in New Rochelle where my highlight for the night was spending some time with special guest, Academy-Award nominee Ruby Dee. Our New ROs Michelle & Nelson – the Boyces - invited us to the opening of “Alvin & Friends”, a southern and Caribbean contemporary bistro in New Rochelle. Its Executive Chef is Raymond Jackson, formerly of Maroon’s. Its owner Alvin Clayton is best known as an artist (Denzel Washington, Robert DeNiro and Don Cheadle own his work) and model (L.L. Bean catalogue, most recently). “Real Housewives of DC”s Paul Wharton – a friend – and my girl Sidra accompanied me. Many were excited to see him as the reality show on which he co-starred was wrapping up. We all commuted – for the first time – via the Metro North. Also, it was great to see my favorite New ROs Nichole and Cynthia. Also, great to see my buddies Will and Joe, two of the best in the business!!!! LOVELY NIGHT IN NEW RO!

I was invited to the launch event for “INSPIRED: Iconic African-American Women & Their Inspirations” (at The Studio Museum of Harlem) – co-authored by friends Nathan Hale Williams and Crystal McCrary Anthony. So many great friends were in the house – including Native Restaurant’s Brian (my boss on Thursday for All-Star Karaoke); Miss Jean; Kelli Goff, Jamar, Ryan, Tracy, Adrienne, Patrik-Ian Polk, Olivia, and a host of others. After, we revisited the INSPIRED folks for a night of “Boomerang”. Also, there was R&B music. Both at Native, where Nathan’s “Classic” Tuesday night takes place. This is also where we do ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS! Here our buddies Sidra, Derek, DeJuan, Hal, Erica Watson, and others were in the house. CONGRATS NATHAN & CRYSTAL!

MARK OLDMAN

Friends Donna Torrence and Hanna Lee invited us to attend Mark Oldman’s wine book launch party at Mark’s FAB new NYC apartment. There were numerous wines from all over the world to sip and Chef Michel Nischan cooked up some savory treats. And I got to take a little time to chat with three producers from “The View” – Patrick, Jonathan, and Natalie. Darryl “Dr. Mixologist” Robinson (of “Cooking Channel” fame) was in the house as was my NABJ friend Lola Ogunnaike.

EL DEBARGE, MARY J. BLIGE, & EBONY (CIRCA DIANA ROSS)

El Debarge was in town. We went. Radio City Music Hall is where he performed the soundtrack of my childhood & adolescent years. Afterwards, EBONY’s current cover model Mary J. Blige (channeling one of MISS ROSS’ classic EBONY covers from the ‘70s) headlined. A stop through Washington Heights for karaoke Monday nights before heading home to check in on Nene, Dwight, and the gang! Y’all been watching “Real Housewives of Atlanta”? FIERCE!

CLAUDINE

One night in Harlem, I felt like I might have been in a ‘70s movie. After a day of working from home, I think I stepped into a time capsule. We joined our favorite Harlem couple Mara & Tommie at Moca (including some slamming catfish fingers). Afterwards, Ant got off late to join us for dinner & drinks at Mojo. A birthday girl shared her Chanel and Louboutin cupcakes with us, compliments of Ilene Miriam Baked Goods – www.ilenemiriam.com. Legendary actor Glynn Turman dined at the table for which we had to wait. I followed him out for a quick chat and photo-op. He played Leroy "Preacher" Jackson in “Cooley High” (and – of course – “Dr. War” in “A Different World”. Too, he is Aretha Franklin’s ex-husband). As we segued back to Mara & Tommie’s for a night-cap, we observed one of NYC’s finest sanitation workers macking on an attractive young lady, who too had just dined at Mojo. We observed her give the garbage man her number, which conjured up images of “Claudine” for me. Diahann Carroll was nominated for an Oscar in her portrayal of a mother of six on welfare, who was a part-time maid. She and trash man – a fine & mellow James Earl Jones – manage a romantic threesome between the two fine characters and “Mr. Welfare”. After we looked at a couple of YOU TUBE clips, including Willow’s new hit song, I insisted on sharing “Claudine” with the young folks. It’s a classic, albeit dated, arguably – some might say - stereotypical. Yet like “For Colored Girls…” (which was originally an early ‘70s choreo-poem), the messages are still relevant today. QUESTION FOR YOU: You're out with friends. Dressed to the NINEs. A garbage man is on his route. He's fine <but of course, he's in uniform>! He likes the way you look as well; chats you up quickly between tossing trash bags on the back f the truck; and he asks for your number. You give it to him. He's go...nna call you later for a date. Some of my lady friends (and a couple of men friends) seem to think I've over-romanticized the moment and that most women would NOT go for a garbage man. That's where the chat about the classic film "CLAUDINE" started. And don't forget 'ROC'. But in real life, WOULD YOU DATE A GARBAGE MAN and/or seriously consider a relationship with one? I say "GO FOR IT!" In the case of this one, he's cute; has a job; and benefits (and seemed to be able to nicely put a sentence or two together). Some of my girlfriends - shockingly to me - said "NO WAY!" WHAT DO YOU SAY?

I’M COMING OUT

Whether you're lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or not, be proud of who you are and your support for LGBT equality this Coming Out Day (or any day… and beyond)! I’ve LIVED OUT LOUD for 15 years now and struggled inside for all the years prior to that. The journey hasn’t been easy, but since COMING OUT and... being TRUE to myself and my loved ones, it’s better out here – professionally and personally. I now dedicate time and resources to LGBT-mentoring/scholarship organization LIVE OUT LOUD (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2010/5/24/go-for-your-dreams-reach-and-their-yours.html); the National Association of Black Journalists’ LGBT Task Force of which I am a founding member; I hosted a well-received (but not picked up) ‘Queer-Eye’- meets-‘The-View’-pilot a few years back (http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/PatrickGeneralReel.wmv); and I speak up whenever asked – including recent appearances on Michael Eric Dyson’s radio show (http://dysonshow.org/?p=1721) and the first Urban LGBT network glo-TV (http://glotvnetwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=109&Itemid=271); and I take part ownership in a particular GLAAD Award for a talk show’s episode titled “When I Knew I Was Gay” (I was on-camera & produced a number of segments for that edition). ONWARD & UPWARD, MY PEOPLE! And the recent string of reported bullying incidents that are leading to these gay suicides MUST STOP! And to the politicians, religious leaders, and pundits who have made careers out of saying that gays are somehow less than, please STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE! – especially if you are engaging in DL activities yourself. And whether STRAIGHT or LGBT, BE THE CHANGE and SPEAK UP! Great times at my "annual therapy" convention in San Diego! It’s the National Association of Black Journalists (www.nabj.org) … and since 1991 when I was a part of NABJ’s student internship/scholarship program, I’ve not missed one Convention.

But I’ll walk you through some of it:

USS MIDWAY

Last Wednesday, I made it to San Diego - safe and sound. Had to hit the ground running with run-throughs and final script tweaks for the next day’s Opening Ceremony/Plenary (with Dr. Oz) which I co-produced with my Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts. Since Ant didn’t come until Friday night, my girlfriend Mara Schiavocampo (NBC Digital Correspondent) was my social partner for the first few nights. Also, my friend Karu Daniels (AOL Black Voices) was in the mix. And we also took a shuttle from the ship back to the hotel. Good music was playing and - of course - I had to get the party started. LOL!

DR. OZ

Thursday morning began with a BREAKING NEWS PLENARY – featuring Shirley Sherrod. Mara and CNN’s Don Lemon led the special session.  Donnie McClurkin canceled in the 11th hour (with apologies, but a health development prevented him from being there). Still, the show went on with Rene Syler as host. Dr. Oz and I have had the chance to work intimately over the years – including a search for dead and decomposing bodies in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Here at NABJ, he dropped science on all things optimum health in the African American community. NABJ’s Emerging Journalist of the Year Mike Feeney agreed to be Dr. Oz’s Truth Tube subject. And Roland Martin –ascot and all – agreed to have his waist measured. Dr. Oz was so gracious and generous with his presentation. And he told me he LOVED working with me again. My girl Elise was the Convention Chair – so it too was good to work with her again as we’ve maintained our relationship since meeting in 1994, but we haven’t worked together since our days at “Good Day Atlanta”.

REALITY SHOWS: THE NEW JOB FRONTIER

From there, Michael K. Watts and I were on a high of positivity and accomplishment. This, despite some feedback I received that disappointed me. Without muddying the waters and giving the dis a spotlight, I will say this: though much of what any of us does in news – especially arts & entertainment  - can promote negativity and messiness, I stand firm that my mantra around “pop culture” and “possibilities” keeps me standing firmly and successfully in this industry. And anything that diverts me from that is not for me – even satirically speaking. I should call those shots instead of losing my integrity at the pass. Lesson learned. So, re-committing to those affirmations that work, I have washed that feedback out of my hair and - in that moment - I segued to moderate the first of the NABJ A&E Task Force's offerings in San Diego: a "Reality TV" panel. Though my buddy Dr. Ian K. Smith canceled on us, the balance of the participants ensured they were on their A game. TV One (www.tvoneonline.com/) sponsored the panel and Senior Vice President of Original Programming, Toni Judkins shared helpful tid-bits about where TV One is going in the direction of Reality TV – including a new show coming up with Jodeci’s K Ci and JoJo. Additionally, my friends came through for me: Evolyn Brooks (Executive Producer/Viasol Productions, Inc.) was the show runner on “Monica: Still Standing” and “Frankie & Neffe”. She hired me to work on those shows as field producer and story producer. Her knowledge – along with my girl Jacque Reid (TV/Radio broadcaster – Kiss 98.7 FM/Cast member, “Let’s Talk About Pep”) – was priceless. So many came up afterwards and throughout the rest of the convention to say: “Now, I know there is another genre for which my skills set is applicable and I don’t feel as wiped out by the industry now.” I like that feedback! And to Ev’s fiancé Gary: “I LOVE YOU!” <Inside joke! LOL!>

I LIKE IT!

NASCAR and BET threw some awesome receptions. It was good to see so many of my friends – too many to name. But I couldn’t mix and mingle too long because there was dinner awaiting. The spot? The Palm with Mr. El Debarge and a host of other fab A&E journalists. He is promoting his upcoming comeback CD: "Second Chance". I'm close to his twin cousins Shelly and Sherry who helped make this moment happen – in part. But the driver of the effort is my Spelman sister Tosha Whitten Griggs (www.frontpagepr.com).  We drank, posed for pix, sang, ate, and CELEBRATED the return of one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITES! And at 49, he is back and fit as ever. We all shared our Debarge memories – mine including Savannah, Georgia. October 1984. My mom was dropping me off to the Coastal Empire Fair to join my friends. As we drove down the dark road – aligned with Spanish moss, I can remember hearing the first note of “In A Special Way” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyQm3rYyNrQ). I was transfixed. Of course, I was already a huge fan of Debarge from “I Like It” and “All This Love” and a few other modest tracks that Savannah played in heavy rotation. But I knew Debarge was claiming its throne as a FAVORITE when I heard that song. Too, I recall when Debarge came to Savannah (opening for Luther Vandross. Also, The Deele – with Babyface & L.A. Reid - was on that set). And as excited as we were to see El and the boyz, Bunny was on maternity leave. We were devastated! LOL! El laughed at that one, since - after all - he was there. And I didn’t share this one, but in July 1994 (just a couple of weeks before my mom’s passing), I worked on “Good Day Atlanta” and booked El to be on the show – promoting a solo project). Additionally, he agreed to come and visit my kids at “Options: Image of the Future” – a summer camp at Georgia Tech that I co-founded with my childhood buddy Reggie. At the time, my nephew was in Atlanta and accompanied me to this special day and as I had each student introduce themselves to El, my nephew also – at five years old – did an introduction, which impressed El. Fast forward through some challenging times around an admitted drug addiction, he says he has been clean for almost two years. And El is excited to be back in the studio preparing for his “Second Chance” release on September 28 (Interscope). That means a tour in the Fall/Winter? SPORTS TASK FORCE PARTY

We always work hard and play hard at NABJ. So, after Black List 3 screened via HBO and TARGET, and its creator Elvis Mitchell, El worked the room to say HI to NABJ. Then, after we said goodbye, I segued to the NABJ Sports Task Force party with Mara at Stingaree. It was a BLAST! We were also joined by our girlfriend Shani (and our new girlfriend Sasha). Sasha is best buddies with Shani and Andrea, who – you recall – supported us on shooting this pilot project on which I’m hosting. (By the way, we’re still editing and getting ready to pitch it). This was quite the reunion of NABJ friends. And GREAT DANCING – ALL NIGHT LONG!

FELA!

Most of what you see me dressed in is compliments of my friend R. Scott French at Richard Harris USA (www.richardharrisusa.com) and American Chang (www.americanchang.com). They provided me pulls from their Fall 2010 line-up. But also, my Nigerian designer friend Moshood (whose pieces I’ve worn all around – including The White House) dressed me in a number of awesome pieces – including these FELA-inspired sandals. So, it was perfect that I wore it to the FELA! news conference where I met the Tony-award-winning show’s producer Stephen Hendel. This moment was made possible by my NABJ friend Neil Foote and my dearest friend Marcia Pendelton (www.walktallgirlproductions.com).

THE YOUNG, THE RESTLESS, & THE LEGACY

So, our NABJ A&E Task Force reception - powered by Y&R – was a huge success. Kristoff St. John; Darius McCrary; and Julia Pace Mitchell came (Though Jeanne Cooper - "Mrs. Chancellor" – canceled due to an 11^th hour illness). We honored Y&R for all it has continued to do in the way of celebrating its African American cast. Also, we saluted Y&R for keeping their corresponding storylines up front and center. And it's worth noting that Julia's mother is legendary 70s actress Judy Pace. It turns out Judy is the widow of the late baseball great Curt Flood, Julia's stepfather. He was honored at the Sam Lacy Pioneer Awards. Our NABJ A&E Task Force honored JET's Clarence Waldron with our NABJ A&E Legacy Award which included a stellar presentation by our NABJ A&E Task Force co-chair Greg Dunmore. Greg also produced a tribute video that included remarks from Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Dionne Warwick, Brandy, India.Arie, Jesse Jackson, Tavis Smiley, and many, many more. It was wonderful! And Clarence was so full and inspiring with his acceptance speech.  

DISNEY

Ant came into town quickly enough to see me host the Disney event. Disney has asked me to host their special presentations over the last few years. American Idol’s Kimberly Locke performed. And Cupid - of Cupid Shuffle fame – performed as well. We all did the Cupid Shuffle at the end of the night. Then, we all gathered for the President's Reception before doing a round of social hanging amidst the varied hospitality suites in our host hotel. It was also great to see Steve Perry who is the founder and principal of the Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut. I had a chance to interview Steve for an ESSENCE Magazine piece from November 2009. It was a look at the shifting image of manhood in the era of Obama. Steve is also the author of "Man Up!: Nobody is Coming to Save Us," which offers solutions to problems in the black community. He continues to be a support as I explore how to get a book published.

"HE IS CONCERNED ABOUT YOU"

Tears fell… my heavy heart lightened… and I am so GRATEFUL for all of the aforementioned and the chance to share – with Ant and my NABJ family – a fellowship of spiritual renewal and revival. “WRITING FOR SCRIPTED TV”

Another NABJ A&E Task Force offering included our "Writing for Scripted TV" which I also moderated.  It included a stellar panel: Lauren Anderson (Director of Comedy Development and Production/NBC Universal - Universal Media Studios); Cheo Coker (Southland/Notorious); Brett Mahoney (Producer/CSI: Miami); Eunetta Boone (Executive Producer/Writer for many things, including Cuts/Hip Hop 101). NBC Universal was the sponsor of this well-attended event as well as the sneak peek of “Undercovers” with Boris Kodjoe (as moderated by Shaun Robinson, our NABJ A&E Task Force member and weekend host/correspondent for “Access Hollywood”): www.nbc.com/undercovers/. “IF GOD IS WILLING AND DA CREEK DON’T RISE”

Spike Lee came to NABJ several times. Most recently, his 'joint' “Miracle at St. Anna” came to Chicago a couple of years ago. I interviewed the author of the book from which the film was adapted: James McBride. For his four-hour, two part documentary “If God is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise”,  he explores New Orleans – five years after Hurricane Katrina. The documentary debuts AUG. 23 and 24, exclusively on HBO ((www.hbo.com/documentaries/index.html). He brought 90-minutes of it to us and he explores how the ambitious plans to reinvent the Crescent City are playing out. According to the release, it’s a “patchwork of hope and heartache in a story that is book-ended by a pair of momentous events — the historic 2010 Super Bowl victory and the disastrous British Petroleum oil spill”.

SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE

 On the last night of NABJ, Ant and I attended the Salute to Excellence Awards. Congrats to my friends and NABJ fam: Paula Madison; Mike Feeney; Soledad O'Brien; et al. who received much-deserved honors. And everyone surely cleaned up brilliantly. Just a room full of beautiful people. Always fun to dress up a bit.  PHILLY - where NABJ will be next year - put on a party with DJ Monie Love on the 1-2s. Then, Ant and I got to hang with friends Scott, Tony, Sasha, and all of our NABJ fam!

YACHT CLUB

Ant and I enjoyed some couple time at the San Diego Yacht Club for Sunday brunch before heading back east. Re-nourished from NABJ. Now, what's next? Many follow-ups and networking updates towards more work. I have a great, new pool of influence from which to create synergies. I LOVE YOU, NABJ!

P.S.

Just a few hours of sleep since my early morning return from San Diego, I had to high-tail it to my nephew who has moved to town. His parents (my brother & sister-in-law) brought him to town from Georgia last week (while I was in San Diego). From the distance, Ant and I made sure they were entertained – including tix to “Wendy” and “FELA!”. But since I was now back, we squeezed in the George Faison Firehouse 2nd anniversary celebration of James Baldwin (with Dr. Maya Angelou). After we enjoyed Miss Maude's Spoonbread Too Restaurant, we went to 'Remembering Jimmy' where I introduced my nephew Noot to Norma Jean Darden, Miss Maude's owner. The evening provided us so much entertainment. Toni Seawright; Ebony Joanne; and many others performed. My Morehouse brother Khalid worked on the production. George Faison is his cousin. And the many guests made my sister-in-law very happy as she was so excited to see: Lynn Whitfield; Paul Mooney; Phylicia Rashad; Ruby Dee; Roberta Flack; Ashford & Simpson; and my friends Charles; Dwayne; and Raymond. FUN FAMILY TIME! WELCOME TO NYC, NOOT!

I invited Noot and one of his friends Chanel to join Ant and me at Jimmy Choo’s NYC Flagship Store on 5^th Avenue. It was an evening of refreshing cocktails, delicious appetizers, great dance music, and several of my favorite people. I got to introduce the new New Yorkers – straight out of Morehouse and Spelman – to their AUC sister Jacque Reid. Of course, it became an official event when Bevy Smith walked through the door. Additionally, my favorite New ROs (I call them) were in the house. Michelle Sanchez-Boyce was in the house. So was her husband Nelson. Our artist friend Cynthia always brings it. And our host with the most Erika Munro Kennerly was so gracious and inspiring throughout the set which benefitted the people of Haiti. Thanks for having us, Erika.
