I got news of her passing after midnight…and couldn’t lift myself from my fetal position to post anything nor could I lift myself out of bed to turn the computer on to email something. I just laid there until the pain subsided and I fell asleep to dreams of a time when SIDMEL took a chance on ME!!! AND THE MANY REFLECTIONS CAME FLOODING THROUGH! Well, I'm up now... and the news is still true.... and I did get out of bed - knowing there would be a sea of condolences and memories in social media…and RIGHTLY SO! Sidmel Estes Sumpter was not only the FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT of our beloved National Association of Black Journalists, she paved the way so that ALL WOMEN MANAGERS – and ALL BLACK JOURNALISTS and JOURNALISTS OF COLOR who want the opportunity to work – can stand firm in their calling and WORK! And as one of her first two producers she hired for the now-iconic GOOD DAY ATLANTA which she Executive Produced, she showed of what she was made – hiring this reporter trainee from WSB-TV who was interested in the entertainment/news mix of morning TV to learn not only how to build a morning news show…but she gave me my FIRST opportunities to grow my gift for conducting the interview and to build my “pop culture expert/entertainment reporter” reel through a number of Atlanta-based opportunities that would have New York City calling in 1995! Sidmel didn’t want me to leave her or WAGA, but knew she had to let me go. In our last, in-depth chat, she acknowledged that she was being selfish and shouldn’t have tried to hold me back from trying to take my career to the next level, but she LOVED having me at GOOD DAY ATLANTA with her and she explained that I was one of her “BABIES” – a term of endearment she called us all…and – in turn – those of us who have come up through the student pipeline are coined #NABJBABIES. In our last chat a couple of years ago (Orlando NABJ), Sidmel told me how proud she was of what I made of myself - as producer, talent, and MAN --- something she pointed out that she knew I was figuring out when we worked together and I was 22 and 23 years old. Well, like Sid, I can right now acknowledge that I am being selfish and trying to hold her back from leaving us and taking her life’s destiny and legacy to the next level. She is one of my INDUSTRY MOMS after all! She took a chance on me at the beginning…and so many thousands and thousands of others – including putting the fire under us entertainment beat journalists to start the NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force! She was spirited, fierce, pioneering, and FULL OF LOVE…and she did an AWESOME JOB while here on earth – indeed jumping over the moon to be with her parents again in heaven. This, as we keep her family, especially her sons Joshua and Sidney, in our PRAYERS! THOUGH A SAD MOMENT IN TIME that will reverberate for the rest of their lives, THEY SHOULD BE SO PROUD! SHE LOVED HER BOYS!!! WE WILL LOVE SIDMEL ESTES SUMPTER FOREVER! I LOVE YOU ALL! Please don’t forget to LOVE ONE ANOTHER – from near or far! JUST LOVE ONE ANOTHER as I LOVE YOU! #NABJ40

Momentum Honors honored me this past weekend at SOHO House in NYC with its Pillar of Empowerment Award! Blessed! Beyonce donated 100K to the cause which is MOMENTUM's TEEN program. She didn't attend. THE CLOSING CEREMONY & LUNCHEON at Savannah State University’s Department of Mass Communications (Adams Hall) was an INSPIRATIONAL LOVE FEST – WWW.SSUMEDIAHIGH.NET.SPONSORS/PARTICIPANTS included WTOC – the first TV station to hire me (in high school) as “teleprompter” for the 5p and 6p newscasts. Contributor Kim Gusby saw my visit newsworthy enough to tease it on “Coastal Sunrise” - http://bit.ly/lor_ssuhigh. WSAV sent cameras to the event as well for later newscasts. One of my NABJ mentors/Spelman big sister Wanda Lloyd is Chair of SSU’s Department of Mass Communications (She too is childhood BFFs with my favorite teacher from Windsor Forest High School, Mrs. Linda Green, who surprised me! And what a full-circle moment as in order for me to be able to do the WTOC gig, Mrs. Green took me to my mom’s job to get the car – so I could get downtown. Then, I’d pick mom up after the 6p newscast wrapped! THANK YOU, LINDA GREEN!). And to my NABJ sister Tina A. The SPRING 2014 SERIES of “BILLIE’S BLACK PRESENTS ALL STAR KARAOKE WITH PATRICK L. RILEY” wrapped last week! ! And so happy that GORDON CHAMBERS chose our final TUESDAY to come out, support, and sing (songs from his catalog like “Missing You” - the Grammy nominated theme of Set It Off (performed by Brandy, Tamia, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan) and my favorite, Brownstone's Grammy nominated hit "If You Love Me" which he rocked a caapella (and you know I joined in). 
Gordon graciously joined our “The Boss” chorus on that Diana Ross disco anthem penned and produced by the Ashford & Simpson.  Film Life Presents the 18th annual American Black Film Festival took place in NYC for the first time: www.abff.com. TWITTER - @abff. SPECIAL SHOUT OUT to my friend Patrik-Ian Polk on his NEW FILM “BLACKBIRD”: TWITTER - @blkbirdthefilm. MO'NIQUE stars! ANOTHER SHOUT OUT to my colleague Kai Brown’s brother Tobi Gadison who starred in ‘Myra’s Angel’, which made its ABFF debut this weekend. The script was penned by Skye Dennis and directed by Hakim Hudson. The film tells the story of a a man’s (played by Tobi Gadison) journey for redemption as he tries to clear his name of a robbery he didn’t commit. ALSO: We saw "Life's Essentials with Ruby Dee," Documentary About Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, made its big screen premiere at the American Black Film Festival. The film, which is the work of Mr. Davis and Ms. Dee's grandson Muta'Ali, is part tribute, part history lesson and part coming-of-age story and gives viewers an intimate look into the "remarkable lives of the couple many consider the all-time king and queen of Black Hollywood," according to production notes. WELL, MISS ROSS performed to a PACKED HOUSE at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN – THE THEATER this weekend! THAT’S ALL! SO GOOD to hang out with my ROSS enthusiasts as Rhonda Ross opened with her electrifying set followed bombastically by MISS ROSS who was in GREAT FORM --- effortlessly giving her audience HIT after HIT after HIT! “SING RAIF,” Miss Ross exclaimed on “The Boss” – looking out to her quite enthusiastic grandson, Diana and Berry Gordy’s grandboy! “Raif! Shout out to Dwayne Ashley, Vice President of Development at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and my BFF, Miss Sidra Smith, NAACP Image Award winning producer for “Free Angela and All Political Prisoners” – THE DOCUMENTARY of 2013-2014 season, if you ask me! They each made sure I was in the house for Jazz at Lincoln Center's SWING, A SUMMER BENEFIT COCKTAIL PARTY inside the gorgeous Appel Room in at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall – overlooking Columbus Circle and the South entrance to Central Park. The night included a FAMILY REUNION (of sorts) as so many of my industry buddies and associates were in the house! Primarily, though, there were performances by Jonathan Batiste, Cécile McLorin Salvant, The Rodriguez. In the 2013-14 season, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s performance and education initiatives impacted audiences on both local and global scale. The organization served 724 children through its WeBop early childhood education program, while 2,700 schools participated in the annual Essentially Ellington high school jazz program. Anthony Harper and I loved us some FIFTH HARMONY during the second season of The X Factor. The group consists of members Ally Brooke Hernandez, Normani Hamilton, Dinah Jane Hansen, Camila Cabello, and Lauren Jauregui. They signed a joint deal with Syco Music, owned by Simon Cowell, and Epic Records, L.A. Reid's record label, after finishing in third place behind Tate Stevens and Carly Rose Sonenclar on the show. Shout out to one of my NABJ "babies" (mentees) Olivia D. Sanders who is pursuing her Masters at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. She invited me to weigh in - as on-cam pundit - on an El Debarge piece she produced for her Broadcast class. It’s her FINAL! Olivia? Your mentor Patrick L. Riley gives you an A+. Hopefully your professor will agree. I am so happy for him. He’s been nominated for two GRAMMYs. When our iconic artists fall off, comebacks are often hard to come by. It’s like an equation: a new record deal and/or concert tour have to meet the right marketing/publicity machine and the public interest at the pass. But the TALENT or some modicum of the talent must still be there. It seems that all the stars have aligned for El’s SECOND CHANCE – including that AMAZING VOICE which is back in full… and I couldn’t be happier for him. He’s on a major label – INTERSCOPE/GEFFEN (which is also Mary J. Blige’s label). That means he’s got the support and the team behind him. I’ve met his management team – KINGS OF LA – including legendary music executive Pete Farmer and his wife Pam. They are not only ensuring that he gets the bookings and the notices, but they are taking care of El: mind, body, and soul. The music on “Second Chance” is as CLASSIC DEBARGE as it is RELEVANT & RADIO-FRIENDLY! El has collaborated with only the best – from  Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis & Babyface in addition to collaborating with current hip-hoppers 50 Cent and Fabolous as well as a classic R&B duet with our beloved Faith Evans. His first TV appearance on the BET AWARDS was a surprise… and what a reveal! He not only sang the greatest hits (about six of them), but he also introduced the title track: “Second Chance” which offers up a dose of testimonial and humility that audiences LOVE! And let’s not forget: The DEBARGE Dynasty is ICONIC. Not necessarily prolific as their troubles unfortunately have dwarfed their ability to crank out lots of music over the years. But what EL and his older siblings and then his other siblings who became his DEBARGE group members have produced is music that underscores a nostalgic time in our lives… and those songs still hold up today via all radio formats. From “All This Love” to “ Time Will Reveal” to “ Stay With Me” and “A Dream” (which hip hop & R&B just took over in the way of samples), the music is timeless. EL DEBARGE is one of pop & soul music’s premiere vocalists. His falsetto not only still sounds great (which is a wonder considering his drug abuse issues), but in the grand scheme of the music industry’s great falsettos – from Eddie Kendrick to Michael Jackson to Earth, Wind, & Fire’s Phillip Bailey to Maxwell and others, EL DEBARGE is one of the best. And now, two Grammy nods - including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B song. Looks like TIME is REVEALING!

TERRY MCMILLAN – FELA!

Last Saturday’s FELA! matinee was followed by my interview with Terry McMillan (and a few cast members from FELA – including current FELA Kevin Mambo).

We had a great chat about her new book “Getting to Happy”.

On my copy, she wrote: “I’m grateful to you & love your work & interest in what we do! YES!”.

 She told us that she’s currently working on a re-write of the book’s screenplay adaptation, which is a “Waiting to Exhale” sequel that is also waiting on Whitney who we hear is the hold-out for the film company’s efforts to reunite the cast for the follow-up film.

ALL-STAR KARAOKE

So ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT is still going strong. Though we’ll take a break on the THURSDAY before Christmas, we will – for sure – be back up and running on the THURSDAY before New Year’s (12/30). NATIVE RESTAURANT is the spot. It’s on Lenox Avenue and 118^th Street from 9pm to MIDNIGHT. Based on our last two weeks, we’ve had some sparkle in the house: My friend Kevin-Anthony’s client B. Slade (formerly known as Tonex) whose electrifying performance I’d just seen earlier in the evening at Joe’s Pub (The FAB Kimberly Nichole opened with my friend Darius Booker on the best background ever). She has sung with my fav ATL-iens – including India.Arie, Anthony David, and Donny. Last night, she sang with me at ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT at NATIVE. AKHENATEN’S BLACK POP SERIES #1: includes a collection of popular images from African American culture that speak to iconic black impressions in popular media.  The first installment of this body of work is made up of a collection of 9 abstract expressionistic paintings created by thick textured brush strokes on miniature canvas.  These images can be juxtaposed with the work of artists such as Clementine Hunter and Jean Michelle Basquiat whose work has been coined as “Primitive Art” in the context of art history based on its free and relatively flat aesthetic and non-traditional use of surface.  The surfaces in which these images reside have been assembled in the form of refrigerator magnets which add to its pop appeal.

“Good Times” is such a muse, we were so excited that our girl Sidra snagged those two. Plus, because of TV ONE, I’ve been watching a lot more of it of late. Shout out to my friend Stanley Bennett Clay (pictured left). His 1975 episode of "Good Times" was on recently.  He portrayed Jimmy Pearson - the new politician in town who got bested by incumbent crook Alderman Davis (the intro of a recurring character on the show). Fast forward to 2010: STANLEY is a WINNING WRITER EXTRAORDINAIRE! LUV U, STANLEY! And LOVE MY GOOD TIMES! Also, a recent installment "Good Times" highlighted Wilona (Ja’Net Dubois). I met her last year while working in L.A. for a stretch that also included the chance to be a guest of Miss Aretha Franklin at The Hollywood Bowl & The Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. Sending PRAYERS to THE QUEEN for a speedy recovery, by the way! And Debbie Allen was just in an episode as J.J.s girlfriend/fiance. She played a dope addict. It was a fierce two-parter.

KENNEDY CENTER 2011

I had the chance - in 1991 - to perform on the KENNEDY CENTER HONORS with the Morehouse College Glee Club. We were there to honor Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus Composer and Conductor Robert Shaw. I met Dianne Smith (www.diannesmithart.com) recently when Sid did her swap party for “The Nate Berkus Show”.  She invited us to her home where she features 900 pieces of her work – from paintings to sculpture. What a talented artist and chef.  The Harlem-based artist surely knows her way around turkey pot pie & pound cake….  

TICHINA ARNOLD GIVES BACK

We got to escort Tichina Arnold – in town starring in LOVE, LOSS, & WHAT I WORE – to the Harlem Lanes. She graciously agreed to pop by and say HI to 43 young, Fairfax, Virginia, African American high school males from a Mount Vernon High School program called Men With Vision and Purpose (Our friend Jacquie Lee and Nardos Brown – the principal – created this test pilot program to close the achievement gap among African American males between the ages of 16 - 18. These young men get an incentive at the beginning of the school year to bring their grades up to a 2.5 and above average in order to experience an immersion to New York City to meet affluent African American male Executives of the corporate, entertainment and sport industries. Forty-three out of the sixty three young males met the challenge which was a major feat. CONGRATS, FELLAS!)

TREE TRIMMING: PART ONE

My boy Murphy invited us out for a tree-trimming in Harlem – well-appointed with food; drink; and cheer! Imagine Sid’s, Ant’s and my excitement when our friends Scott and Tony from L.A. called to say they were in town (Scott works alongside Sheryl Lee Ralph). We invited them on up to join in the fun….

2R HOLIDAY APPRECIATION

Then, 2R’s Entertainment & Media PR “Holiday Appreciation Party” was a lot of fun! CONGRATS to Robbie, Ra-Fael, and their star clientele – including my favorite MIGUEL PERDOMO, Supermodel with the most. Great to see Robert, Kevin-Anthony, Bariek, and the rest of the gang.

TREE TRIMMING: PART TWO

One recent Saturday, HARLEM came a calling – from Native (with Ary, Rick, & Irie); then, another set w/a host of new friends – including Ron; Brandye; model Julian Sapp (featured in Beyonce’s current DVD); and others. Tata joined us there and continued on to Seitu’s tree trimming. And can I tell you he had the best friend chicken wings this side of The Hudson. Miss Nina Flowers and the gang were in the house too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Friends Karen Good & Andy Diaz celebrated their birthdays on one SATURDAY night. Karen – in Brooklyn – is my Savannah homeboy Maurice’s fiancé. He choreographed an awesome surprise for her. In the house, some of my favorite Savannah home folks – including Joicelyn; and Rae. We were all close friends in Savannah and remain friends to this day while we are all in New York. Always a pleasure to see my homegirls. And now Karen is added to the Savannah posse. And DIAZ’s set was at NATIVE.

GIRLS WHO LIKE BOYS WHO LIKE BOYS

I joined my friend Nathan for the premiere of his “Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys” (on the Sundance channel) at SPLASH. (My book project “Big Willies & Amazing Graces: gay men and their best girlfriends” still hasn’t been sold… but the green-lighting of the project gives me hope.) CONGRATS to Nathan and Crystal!!!! LOVE Y'ALL! My friend Laurence Pinckney is promoting the Ultimate Halloween Caribbean Cruise.  The cabins on the ship are selling out fast… but are not all sold out. He wants to get the word out to our people. KANDI KOATED LOVE

So you may recall that my spring and summer in Atlanta gave me access to the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” – including Kandi. I just want to shout out her new album “Kandi Koated” on Asylum/Warner Bros. The Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, and television star has been busy as a bee of late. She recently shot a video for "Haven't Loved Right" in honor of her ex-fiancé, AJ, who senselessly died in Atlanta a little over a year ago. And she joined forces with Carol's Daughter – in NYC and ATL – to launch her project. "The album is about love, relationships. It's meeting someone.  Falling for them. Falling out with them. Breaking up with them. Thinking about them. Getting back together. Moving on. It's all there," she says of the self-penned project, except for "Me and You," written and produced by Ne-Yo, and sampling the Outkast classic "Elevators."

One of my favorite moments over this last couple of weeks: At Mo-Bay Uptown Restaurant (WWW.MOBAYUPTOWNNYC.COM). I had a lovely lunch with songstress Cheryl Pepsii Riley (WWW.CHERYLPEPSIIRILEY.COM). One of her reps Terrance Russ brought us namesakes together to compare notes on the respective "...life of (both) Riley(s)..." Cheryl had a lot to tell – including how much she LOVES to host Monday night’s jam session at Village Underground (www.thevillageunderground.com); how she is going back on the road with Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Happy Family” (www.tylerperry.com/_Plays/); how she sang all of the vocals for Taraji P. Henson’s character in Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” (www.icandobadmovie.com); and how she makes it all work – from being an enterprising and creative singer – of many formats – to being a step-mother; auntee of several almost-grown kids; and a grand-auntee. Though a long time since her debut hit “Thanks For My Child” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICxk7dYYrOs), Cheryl is still quite passionate about the industry and getting her music out there – including recently re-released CD “Let Me Be Me” and single “Come Over”.  My RILEY namesake and I did all of this catching up over tasty Southern Fried Chicken, Deep Fried Catfish, potato salad, rice & peas, mac & cheese, and collard greens. ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS!

So, I will be back in HARLEM on Thursday - hosting NATIVE RESTAURANT's ALL-STAR KARAOKE (9PM - 12 MIDNIGHT). PLEASE COME OUT AND SUPPORT. The ALL-STARS have really come out over these past couple of weeks… and we expect more surprise visits and tie-ins in weeks to come. R&B diva Monifah came by the first week. Her song “Touch It” is in the karaoke book! Gotta love it, right? She knows many of my friends and invited Nichole, Ant, Shareen, Shareen’s Kenny, and me to see her perform at Groove with Toni Menage and Ria. AWESOME SHOW, I might add! These ladies are SANGING, you hear? (We did happy hour at Therapy and Bamboo 52. Thai at Q2 where my best buddies from L.A., Scott and Tony, joined us.) Oh! And when we went to see Monifah and crew perform in The Village the other night, we bumped into Wu Tang Clan's RZA in the parking deck on 3rd Street.  But back to ALL-STAR KARAOKE at NATIVE RESTAURANT in HARLEM, the roster has been impressive – “Black 2 Broadway”s Kevin-Anthony, singer extraordinaire Darius Booker, and “Wendy” art director/cabaret singer Candice Harper. The following week, fan favorite Melonie Daniels brought her amazing vocals (which once backed Mariah Carey) to Lenny Kravitz’s “Get Away”. Also, former “As The World Turns” star Napiera Danielle Groves gave Lauryn Hill a run for her money with “Ex Factor”. And so many friends came out to support: my girlfriend Sidra Smith; performer/director/Tony-nominated choreographer Ken Roberson; my Amazing Grace Nichole, my girlfriend Shareen ("Nate Berkus Show"); a slew of "Wendy" producers; my mentor Darius (CNN); my nephew Herman; my Morehouse BFFs Michael and Khalid; my CAU girlfriend Audra; my former CNBC buddy/author Sana; my friends Rafael, Robert, Murphy, and a host of others whose names I may be forgetting. And the next week, another great group of folks was in the house: NABJ friends - Mara (as in Schiavocampo, NBC Digital Correspondent) and NY Daily News reporter Mike Feeney – brought their singing talents on Beyonce’s “Halo” and MJ’s “Human Nature” – respectively. And my karaoke buddies Javier and Marco brought an array of their great talent – from Freddie Jackson’s “You Are My Lady” to Josh Grobin’s “You Raise Me Up” to some Spanish tunes. And ones to watch: Miss Pernell Walker and Efron! JUST AWESOME on their songs! Such a great group of karaoke supporters and friends came out: my friends Ern, Carl, Saundra, Shantay, Nikoa, Bridgit, Sidra, Tommie, Nicole, Karen, Nathan, Melvin, Mario, Lou, and a host of others. Ant and I have been spending a lot of time in Harlem lately – perhaps an omen of what is to come: RELOCATION, maybe? Of course, we have spent lots of time with our Sidra. Also, my Mara (and Tommie) invited us over for several impromptu hangs. On night two of ALL-STAR KARAOKE, they hosted a fab dinner party before we all segued to NATIVE RESTAURANT. For LABOR DAY, our Sidra joined us along with buddy Tichina Arnold in tow. Tichina brilliantly sang several a cappella excerpts from her intimate evening of song on which she’s working – including a tribute to MJ (and a song or two in German & Italian). She may pop by ALL-STAR KARAOKE one Thursday really soon! Speaking of MJ,  Ant and I went to a book signing at Hue-Man Bookstore in Harlem. Our friend Jason King spoke about and signed his book "Michael Jackson Treasures: Celebrating the King of Pop in Memorabilia and Photos". One of the three novelists of "Visible Lives"s – the E. Lynn Harris-inspired collection - James Earl Hardy, was there with news of great new projects. Stay tuned. “I SLEEP IN JERSEY…”

As my line goes: “I sleep in Jersey. I LIVE in the city.” As a twist of daily tradition would have it, my long-time best bud Carl Nelson drove his bike from Manhattan to New Jersey to see me. And like my childhood days, I was at home, doing my homework, minding my business, and a friend popped over to say “Can Patrick ...come out and play?” LOL! That almost never happens nor has happened in a long time. But I jumped right into my inner-child and joined Carl for a slice of pizza at “Sonny’s Pizzeria” and a scoop of homemade ice cream from “Ice Cream on Grand” – both in Englewood, NJ (near my town).

HOW YOU DOIN’?

Kim Coles has been working the circuit of late. We saw her and hung out with her a couple of weeks ago when she was in town for “The Nate Berkus Show”. Fast forward a couple of weeks later, Kim came back to NYC to tape "The Wendy Williams Show" (www.wendyshow.com). THERE'S MY KIM COLES! I took girlfriend Vilay who is Manivone’s cousin and Ant’s friend from Denver.   And you know, we had a GREAT TIME!   I even took a stab at my own "HOW YOU DOIN?"When she was visiting a couple of months ago, she helped us with the production of our pilot project. Now, she’s been bitten by the bug and has moved to NYC. In addition to Kim Coles being the guest on the show, we got to see Sean Kingston perform. Season 2 for 'Wendy' has started. New set. New energy! How u doin'?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         

MY FAVORITE PEOPLE

I want to shout out my girl Ava Duvernay whose MY MIC SOUNDS NICE premiered on BET recently (She also directed the TV ONE ESSENCE MUSIC FESTIVAL special that premiered recently)…

My buddy Maurice Marable’s documentary “THE STORY” recently ran on Sundance channel. It is actually described as the story behind the story. It follows a group of teenagers at GFS in the South Bronx as they make an attempt to make a film, executing every aspect of the production — including shooting on location in Uganda.  It's a simple and heartwarming journey as the kids discover who they are through the challenge of filmmaking.

I got a call from my former L.A. buddy Ed who happened to be in NYC. His professional credits include Nancy Wilson, Miss Ross, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and a host of others. I snatched him up quickly as I LOVE ME SOME ED and he really took care of me while in L.A. on assignment last year! We enjoyed a hearty meal at Silver Spurs in the Village. Afterwards, buddy Theo inspired a karaoke after set at Karaoke Cave near Union Square…

 Had business in Boston over the past weekend. Upon my return, stopped through New Rochelle to hang out with my Amazing Grace Nichole and her FAB, DC-based fam – including her mother (“Honey”, we call her!); her sister Tori; and her niece Day. Our girlfriend Dawn also joined in on the fun. We enjoyed a lovely meal of tacos & fixins (and a brilliantly-interpreted, a capella serenade of jazz standard "I Wish You Love" by MY Honey, quite the singer in her day... and still. BEAUTIFUL WOMAN!). ..

Speaking of New Ro, Michelle Sanchez-Boyce and her husband Nelson had us over for a night-cap at their beautiful home. This time we were on the patio  – seated around an awesome fire & glass (ice) feature. WONDERFUL EVENING!...

I recently saw an episode of "Good Times" featuring legendary 70s actress Judy Pace for the first time since meeting her at NABJ in San Diego. It's the episode when Florida & James go on 20th Anniversary cabin trip (and "Gloria" makes a cameo as she's looking for the moutain home-owner, James' foreman). Judy is also the mother of Julia Pace Mitchell - the new African American actress on "The Young & The Restless" (Met her in San Diego at NABJ). Next stop: Judy's cameo on "Sanford & Son" (and so much more...). YAYYY! CLASIC SITCOMS!

After two Morehouse men (c/o '92) got the opportunity to produce the Opening Plenary for the National Association of Black Journalists' annual Convention in San Diego (Michael K. Watts and me), another of our brethren is easing on down the road to Dr. Oz. Corey Hebert, MD once walked the yard that is Morehouse College alongside Michael and me. Now, the "Doctor for the People", a New Orleans native, is managing a full-time practice, working the medical beat on WDSU-TV (NBC), and now contributing to the nationally syndicated "Dr. Oz" show on Friday, September 10th. (Coincidentally, the first time Dr. Oz and I worked together, we traveled together from New York City to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. There, we searched for dead and decomposing bodies. Also, Dr. Oz worked hard to treat all those he could in what was (and still is) an overwhelming situation. Since that time, I've produced many segments in the field with him and consider him such a joy and a light.). "The Pulse" is a new segment that will feature Dr. Hebert and two other doctors - keeping viewers abreast of the latest and most controversial medical studies (www.doctoroz.com).  CONGRATS, DR. COREY!

In the wake of her personal worries of late, just want to send a SHOUT OUT to her (and her AWESOME manager Brian).  I am rooting her on NOT just for a HIT CD and commercial success, but INNER-PEACE, JOY, LOVE, and HARMONY! Had a chance to meet her last year when I was in L.A. and found her to be a doll. I hope she knows her worth and where she doesn't know it, I hope she has the people around her who help lift her up.

MISS ROSS is preparing to go back on the road for the 2^nd leg of her stateside “MORE TODAY THAN YESTERDAY” tour. We always welcome a ROSS song… but TV ONE and BET seem to be calling for another ROSS movie as they remind us how brilliant this Oscar-nominated performer is as an actress. Working from home office one day - drumming up new business; managing developing business; and - with my peripheral squint - watching my CBS Soaps... off in the distance. “As The World Turns” – which is about to end its 54-year rotation on September 17, 2010 – was on. I was a crying fool on this particular day as everyone has just attended the funeral of matriarch Nancy Hughes – whose portrayer Helen Wagner died in May of this year. One of the flashbacks shows “Nancy” circa 1991, tutoring pre-Fugees Lauryn Hill’s character Kira, who – in this clip – you can see singing at the wedding of my friend Tamara Tunie’s character Jessica who married Duncan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDsCJXe6TsY I told you my late, great mom Queen Riley raised her “boys” to watch the stories. LOL! I’m here crying for people I don’t know, but - after all of these years - feel very much… like family! WILL MISS "AS THE WORLD TURNS", but like REAL-LIFE, all GOOD THINGS must come to an end!

FATHER’S DAY (AND A MOTHER)

When last I wrote you, it was FATHER’S DAY weekend. I was asked to be a guest on Michael Eric Dyson’s new radio show: http://dysonshow.org/?p=1721. It was a MEN’S SUMMIT! Please take a listen between 13:46-31:27. On the day itself, my DAD called to say he received my basket of healthy gourmet goodies - a blend of savory and sweet. He – in turn – sent a lovely note and this hard copy picture of my siblings and me with our late mom Queen Elizabeth Bellinger Riley. I thought this was from my birthplace Tokyo, Japan (circa '70s) but my sister has reminded me that it was from when we were stationed in California soon thereafter.. Since her passing in July of 1994, I’ve kept few pictures of her in my personal collection. At the time, it was just too painful. Here 16 years later, I still miss her so. But there are too many fond memories that have shaped me to be who I am today. So, this was quite a lovely THANK YOU from my father! Amidst FATHER’S DAY, Ant and I went to join my girlfriend Sidra who invited us to enjoy an easy, breezy Sunday in Harlem (Morningside Park, to be exact) – for house music and lots of fellowship. Ran into many buddies – including Kevin "Moochie" Freeman (Kevin's “Amazing Grace” Erika Munro Kennerly also popped by); Chenoa Maxwell; Tai Beauchamp, Stacey J, her daughter Riley, and Riley’s father; and our girl Bevy Smith.

PRINCE & ELIZABETH

At the Harlem event, I ran into Dave Rowan (pink shoes). He invited Ant, my Morehouse brother Michael Bryant, and me out to celebrate all things Prince and Elizabeth (www.princeandelizabeth.com). The evening included a tour of the retail space (Prince of SOHO); the showroom space (The SHOWROOM); and a preview of Tacombi Taco Stand. Afterwards, we did a swim by our Nathan Hale Williams' SPLASH set. Prior to our Prince and Elizabeth moment, Michael and I met up at nearby BarBossa to discuss future business possibilities.

PRIDE IN BLEU

As PRIDE festivities kicked in, my friend Ra-Fael Blanco invited us to SOHO’s BO CONCEPTS store to celebrate the 4th anniversary of our beloved BLEU Magazine (www.BLEULIFE.com). Many were in the house – including: dearest friends Marqice, Jason, Marlynn, Theo, and Trevor - all celebrating DeVon Christopher's labor of love; Derrick Briggs; Jamar and Ryan; Maurice Jamal; Demarco Majors; Seven; our Hal; and on and on I could go. And recording artist and actress Teyana Taylor was host with the most for the night. Afterwards, a drive by Desire and Chi-Chi’s in the Village. Derrick Bell doubles as bartender and artist.

MJ R.I.P.

Soon came the 1^st anniversary of Michael Jackson’s passing. About 3 minutes into this clip, hear and see Miss Ross' MJ Tribute. It is from her summer tour which received RAVES! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDnoQLvuh_s Last year, I was in the throes of field and story producing reality TV for Dubose Entertainment (in L.A. and then Atlanta). The team with whom I worked included my “Amazing Grace” Nichole and Miss Shareen – both of whom credit “The Nate Berkus Show” as their new employer. As they are busy working on the start-up, they did honor me by letting me get a quick glimpse of them at Copper Smith’s after they clocked out for the weekend. New friend Lorna joined us as well. Then, Ant and I took a meeting at Native with its owner Brian (Stay tuned for a night in which I’ll be hosting a special evening of karaoke. You won’t want to miss it!). Then, we did “Leaving Neverland”, a multi-media tribute to Michael Jackson. It was created by our friend George Faison (Tony-award winning choreographer for “The Wiz” and gracious participant in and generous donor - of space - for the Black History Month campaign I helped produce for BET). And singing diva sister friend Toni Seawright collaborated with him. And my Morehouse brother Khalid worked on the production. Also, Ashford & Simpson were in the house. Since I sang “The Boss” to them back in December… and since Miss Ross is now opening her current show with the hit tune, I wanted to make sure they knew. SMILE! My girl Deborah Gregory was one of the narrators of the script. It was written by Quincy Troupe. His wife Margaret is a famous art curator and collector.  From there, we enjoyed a hang in Harlem – including Amy Ruth. Always great to see my performer friends - whether they/we are on the stage or just supporting others to do their work.

PRIDE COMES TO HARLEM!

On last Saturday, there was PRIDE in HARLEM. Ant and I rolled through before heading to see ‘RACE’ on Broadway care of our beloved Marcia Pendelton. Nichole and Khalid joined us. Ran into my friend Alicia Evans who is a publicist extraordinaire and a singer with whom I've shared a stage or two - including the holiday party for the Black Public Relations Society some years ago (She was the President and booked me to entertain the troops with Christmas songs and many-a-pop-standard). This is Ebony Jo-Ann - also at RACE. She is featured in the new film "The Grown Ups". Go check her out! Afterwards, we joined our Momentum buddies Ruben, Raoul, Ruben's mom Cookie; and Liz for Ruben BDAY BBQ in Washington Heights followed by a roll through No Parking. Then, the next day, we went to the PRIDE parade. We got a bite at COWGIRL with our girl Andrea, her girls, and Ant’s cousin Chantay. Plus, we ran into many friends along the way.

VISIBLE LIVES

Last week, I got the chance to put my acting cap on and participate in a table read for an upcoming romantic comedy that a dear friend is producing. It went well. Here, the rest of the table-read cast celebrate a great session at Native in Harlem.

A few days later, film adaptations were on the mind of many who attended the book signing for “Visible Lives: Three Stories in Tribute to E. LYNN HARRIS”.

My dear friends Terrance Dean (not in attendance on this night), James Earl Hardy, and Stanley Bennett Clay have homaged E. LYNN HARRIS with their three sizzling novellas.

James and Stanley read from their selections and Miss Tina Andrews (who wrote 'Sally Hemmings' telescript and "Why Do Fools Fall In Love") hosted the book signing/reading event at Barnes & Noble on 82nd and Broadway.

Charlie T (center) is a renowned photographer and creator of Stamford, CT exhibit "Just As We Are" which is now being prepped for a London debut. She shot Ant and me a couple of years ago (www.charlietphotography.net/portfolios.htm and www.justasweare.org). We are featured in her photo exhibit. Afterwards, got to enjoy a lovely meal of pasta, tuna, and wine at my Sid's new Harlem digs. En route, we stumbled into artist Hani Shihada (on Broadway and 91st street - www.HaniSideWalkArt.com).

 NABJ

In addition to chasing checks for spot work I’ve recently done, I am open to some new projects (Whatcha got? Any good-fit fare? Gotta keep that revenue streaming). SOS! But in the meantime, I am not twiddling my thumbs as my mostly volunteer efforts as Chair of the NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force have me on back-to-back conference calls – in preps for our San Diego convention at the end of July. It’s gonna be a BLAST (if I can put my pennies together to actually be there. UGH! This, as it too will be good for networking and attracting more good-fit work). Michael K. Watts and I are co-producing the NABJ Opening (featuring my buddy DR. OZ and gospel great Donnie McClurkin); Boris Kodjoe is coming to promote his new NBC show “Undercovers”; and so much more that we are still aiming to greenlight (ahem, time will reveal...). Stay tuned. NABJ is always a blast! (www.nabj.org). One highlight: “The Young & The Restless” is powering our NABJ A&E Task Force reception. The highest-rated daytime drama on American television joins one of NABJ’s top task forces for an evening that promises sparkling synergies and star power. This reception will take time to salute the iconic, multi-Emmy-award-winning “The Young & The Restless” which has charmed its audiences with the best soap operas have to offer since March 26, 1973. For nearly 40 years, Y&R has stood firmly inside a commitment to diversity with its cast and storylines. Y&R stars Kristoff St. John (“Neil Winters”); Darius McCrary (“Malcolm Winters”); and the legendary Jeanne Cooper (Y&R's ever-youthful matriarch “Katherine Chancellor”) will attend this NABJ A&E Task Force’s signature event. These beloved and revered co-stars will share great reflections and updates on the hit soap opera. The characters are like family members i.e. Drucilla RIP (I got to interview her in Vegas at NABJ a couple of years ago); Neil; Lily; Malcolm; Olivia; etc. - just a few of the key players on the show who help to underscore that rare commitment to diversity in the soap world (My brother, my nephew, and I stand on our late mom's (nephew's grandmother's) shoulders with this pass-time. LOL!). Additionally, the NABJ A&E Task Force LEGACY Award will be presented to JET Magazine’s own Clarence Waldron. The creation of the "LEGACY AWARD" - first presented in 1997 at Chicago's NABJ - is designed to acknowledge our unsung (perhaps less heralded) crop of A&E journalists who have spent substantive careers chronicling the often-celebrated and high-profile lives and careers of others. Clarence - known to some as 'the Dean of the African American entertainment journalists' - joins the company of a special group - including the late John H. Johnson and EBONY's former Managing Editor Lynn Norment, also an active member of the NABJ A&E Task Force. Additionally, we've honored such noteworthy journalists as USA Today’s music critic Steve Jones (pictured); the Michigan Chronicle's Rita Griffin (first journalist to interview Diana Ross & The Supremes and their many fellow MOTOWN mates in Detroit -before they became international icons); and David Earl Jackson of Memphis' Tri-State Defender.

STATE OF INDEPENDENCE

This past Happy 4^th of July weekend provided lots of relaxation - including a great cookout at one of the homes of Ant's extended Brooklyn family. Ern joined us. A little work. Actually, went to Wal Mart to grocery shop. GASP! And Ern had us over for a seafood fest a la shrimp/catfish/hush-puppies/baked-fries(with rosemary and other seasonings). And daiquiries. Also, it was great to see friends Sid, Candice, Mara, Tommie, and others over the last few days.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MKW

So all of my peers are turning 40. How can that be? Perhaps because – in November of this year – I will turn 40. Many are being low-key about it. My Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts did it up – including Ammos Greek Seafood Restaurant in East Midtown - a FAB backdrop to ring MKW into his "NEW DAY"! Also, via FACEBOOK, Michael did “40 Days to 40 Years” in which he counted down 40 days leading up to his 40th Birthday with a new photo uploaded each day - tracing his evolution from birth to age 40. And though I’ve known him since I was 17, his picture #38 honored our friendship. Read on:

40th Photo #38: When my best friend Patrick Riley and I pursued careers in journalism while at Morehouse, we had no idea where our paths would lead us. We supported each other professionally and personally, and our career paths would cross a few times: his leaving FOX 5 Atlanta to move to New York caused a job opportunity for me at FOX 5; when I moved to New York, we collaborated on freelance projects between jobs. Our most significant collaboration has been producing major events for the National Association of Black Journalists for the past several years. Here we are posing during the convention in Indianapolis. We are a team, and our friendship is priceless.
