ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT

These past couple of weeks, we’ve had some great times at ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT. TICHINA ARNOLD came by last week. She is in town co-starring in “Love, Loss, and What I Wore” at The Westside Theater. After her debut night, she came by and sang a couple of quick ditties along with inspiring folks to keep their pulse on politics!!!! This, before we enjoyed an after set at Sidra’s place – allowing us to download on all things “Martin”; “Everybody Hates Chris”; and pop culture. THANKS TICHINA!!! The week prior, my buddy Ed Roebuck invited R&B DIVA Alyson Williams who does a wonderful Tuesday night set at Ashford & Simpson’s “Sugar Bar”. She agreed to join me on a number: “Our Love” by Natalie Cole (WHAT A HIGHLIGHT! THANKS ALYSON who – FYI - I’ve interviewed before for “…the Life of Riley…” blog: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/28/love-is-in-control-finger-on-the-trigger.html!) And so many of my friends – old and new – have been coming out to support – including Tracy (left), a breast cancer survivor. I actually met Tracy through Sid at a table reading. MCRIB

I am often invited to big film premieres, wine tastings, and restaurant openings here in New York City. I convinced my girlfriend Sidra to join me at an event that was held at the Times Square McDonald’s (www.McDonalds.com/McRib). The occasion: The return of the McRib (back in restaurants nationwide as a limited promotion running November 2 through November 22). I’d tried it when it first came on the scene back in the ‘80s when I was a tween. Over the years, I’ve seen it on the menu in select locations throughout America, but never re-ordered it as an adult… until last night. McDonald’s USAs Director of Social Media Rick Wion (www.twitter.com/rdublife) invited me out to re-experience the boneless, seasoned pork patty that is dressed with fresh slivered onions, two dill pickle slices, plenty of BBQ sauce, and is served on a toasted, golden-brown home-style roll. I liked it well enough, but not as much as The Ultimate McRib Fans (who were in attendance at the well-appointed affair – including Joey Erwin from Simpsonville, SC, self-described as “Mr. McRib”). Also in attendance: John Resig, co-owner and President of www.theCHIVE.com and www.theBERRY.com. Also, John portrays Deputy Kevin Ellis in one of Sid’s favorite shows and HBO’s hit vampire drama “True Blood”.

KATY PERRY

BIG THANKS to my Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts (and LIVE! FROM FRONT ROW - www.Youtube.com/LiveFromFrontRow). I got to tag along for “Windows Phone Presents: KATY PERRY” at Roseland Ballroom… “… AND I LIKED IT!” I LOVE KATY… and her show – inclusive of ALL of her HITS - was SPECTACULAR! Then, en route home, I enjoyed a wonderful night of food, wine, and conversation at friend/jewelry designer Trevor Hartman’s place. When he noticed my LOVE of ALBUM COVERS, he gave me an early BDAY gift: “1001 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE” (UNIVERSE). THIS RAINY DAY & MONDAY HAPPENED TO BRING ME UP!

RACHEL DAY (IN THE LIFE OF RILEY)

Shout out to my boy Caleb for asking me to direct/field produce a pilot project that stars the talented Rachel Day. Rachel incidentally is one of the models we used on the pilot project I host (still-in-post-production... and Caleb is helping us with that one as well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIlY3ysEN0k&feature=email). My girl Sidra worked with me, which made for a smooth shoot (Thanks Sid!) and our Philly-based crew held us all up brilliantly. And our subject, accessories designer Nicole Romano (www.nicoleromano.com) was a dream along with her team – including Gabby and Megan (who works in her boutique that is housed at The Plaza Hotel). Ant and I also got to hang out with Caleb recently in Manhattan. Good food. Good drink. A little window shopping! CONGRATS RACHEL!

“THE FASHION SHOW” STARRING JEFFREY WILLIAMS

My Amazing Grace Nichole; our friend Michelle; and I went to the Grand Premiere of “The Fashion Show” starring Iman and Isaac Mizrahi. Though I have met and interviewed Iman before, my reason for supporting this effort is: Jeffrey Williams, my friend and Nichole’s cousin whose name we always knew would be in lights. Jeffrey is one of the fashion designer contestants. CONGRATS JEFFREY! YOU ARE SAFE…this week... and we will be watching you every Tuesday night at 10pm on BRAVO! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

Sidra invited Toby and me to join her at Ogilvy & Mather for an introduction to OgilvyCULTURE - a cross-cultural, strategic movement that promises to change how Madison Avenue demographically targets its marketing efforts. The reception and presentation – led by marketing strategist Jeffrey Bowman - were presented to a room full of NYC tastemakers – including “Soul Food”s Bird, Malinda Williams; Miss Bevy Smith; Dee Marshall; Rachel Noerdlinger; Pam Pickens; and a host of others.

TWEENS AND TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS, OH MY!

As I prepare to turn 40, I guess I’m maintaining my joie de vivre by hanging out with the young’ns. Recently, I went to my 13-year-old buddy Zach’s karaoke party at my spot One 7. He asked where he could throw a karaoke set. So, I sent him to my karaoke mecca. And we had a BLAST, but most importantly, Zach had a GREAT TIME!Then, I went to the Hampton Inn to speak to communications and journalism students from my buddy Scott’s alma mater Norfolk State University. They were in NYC for a media tour. I even met - for the first time - the son of my dear friend Sheila Eldridge - awesome publicist and entertainment manager (2nd from right in next pic). Sheila helped me snag an exclusive interview with the 'Funky Divas' En Vogue in 1994 when I was starting out in my career with "Good Day Atlanta". Over the years, she's always mentioned her son. "Jersey" - he calls himself - is getting ready to break into the business by way of the caring folks at Norfolk State U. Look out for him! Also, we invited the impressive bunch of media and journalism scholars to join us for Ant’s co-worker Yaz’s birthday party at Hudson Eatery. Thanks to all of my friends who shared their career testimonials with the young folks who are shaping their professional lives.

MY LISA

Had a GREAT SUNDAY last weekend with my dearest of friends Ern, Tata, Kim, and – of course – Ant. We took a road trip to DC/Maryland to attend a baby shower for my former NJ BFF (but still BFF from the distance) Lisa Goodnight-Sturdivant. That’s right! She’s married now… and they are expecting a baby by year’s end. TIMPANO CHOPHOUSE in Rockville, MD was the well-appointed and elegant backdrop – including the MOST DELICIOUS crab cakes along with other hearty dishes and wine. Was GREAT to see Lisa and her husband Lex along with her parents, his parents, their other family members, and the many friends we have in common. WHAT A JOYFUL ROOM! I laughed so much, my belly hurts! CONGRATULATIONS, my babies!

ALL-STAR KARAOKE

ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS at NATIVE RESTAURANT in HARLEM continues to bring FUN TIMES and GREAT SINGING! And in addition to my many friends who are coming out to listen and support, several are getting on the mic.  My friend Charles Wallace – singer/actor/dancer/producer/director/writer extraordinaire - ‘turned off the lights’ (a la Teddy P) and serenaded the house with ‘love ballad’ (a la LTD). Tony nominee Brenda Braxton popped by to help us with our give-aways including her show "Travelin'" which is running in the city. On that week,  we also gave away tix to FELA! w/Patti LaBelle and Daniel Beaty's "Through The Night" as well as two gift cards to N, my favorite boutique. And our regional/city members of the National Association of Black Journalists came out – including NABJ Region 1 Director Katina. And another week, my NABJ sisters – poet Marcie Eanes (whose current collection, “Sensual Sounds”, is available at www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com) and playwright Amy Simmons – came from Racine, Wisconsin and Philadelphia, respectively JUST to get in on the fun and support our new karaoke adventure! THANKS LADIES! And a special shout out to the Bay-area’s own Troy for popping in and our Dawn, who sang really pretty on the night she came! And my birthday-sake Robin Stone Boyd brought a large party of her girlfriends – including Miss Lisa and Carol. And our ALL-STAR regular Darius Booker (who has substitute hosted at No Parking’s Monday night Karaoke); and sbP’s vocalist extraordinaire Stephen Beasley brought their A-game. And Dr. Mixologist Darryl Robinson (who came out to celebrate his birthday and the week thereafter). He asked me to sing “Theme from Mahogany” for his celebration, and – of course – I did. SIDRA, KIM COLES, AND NATE BERKUS

After my Sidra supported me at my ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT, Ant & I returned the favor. For her Friday, in-studio taping at “The Nate Berkus Show”, Sid asked Ant to style her and she asked me to accompany her to the studio where she, our buddy Kim Coles, and Sid’s friend/interior designer Lisa did their segment, which aired recently: http://www.thenateshow.com/episodes/detail/the-house-that-nate-built  She’s already been invited back. Afterwards, Sidra sponsored a fabulous lunch at Tao Restaurant where our server Kevin Sweeney served up salmon, steak, crispy vegetable rolls, banana pudding, and info about the web series “Keeping Up with the Cardassians” (www.keepingupwiththecardassians.net) in which he stars. Then, we took a bus back to Harlem – something new for me. Ristoranti Settepani provided us some wine, sidewalk fellowship, and a host of characters as only Harlem can provide. Then, we segued to New Rochelle. Girlfriend Chenoa and her husband Carlyle invited us out for an elegant, well-appointed dinner party. Many of our favorites were in the house – including my “Amazing Grace” Nichole; Michelle; Nelson; Tracey; Adair; Jason; and others.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARA!

Tillman’s supper club in New York City was the spot to celebrate the birthday of our ‘Amazing Grace’ Mara Schiavocampo, NBC Digital Correspondent. As always, so much fun with Mara’s cast of characters in the mix: her husband Tommie; CNN’s David Puente; and Mara’s protégée Sia Nyorkor who has left NYC to start reporting in Florida. Afterwards: Karaoke Cave for a night cap! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARA!

FELA & PATTI LABELLE

Ant, our friends Robert & Sidra, and I got to join my Morehouse BFFs Michael and Mario for another run of Broadway’s Tony-award-winning FELA! (but this time featuring Patti Labelle). SHE WAS WONDERFUL, but Lillias White was nominated for a Tony for originating the role. This particular day started with brunch at VYNL with friend Theo – another birthday boy (VYNL Scramble! YUM!); then, after a few errands, we enjoyed the show after which we did a little after-set of Ruby Foo’s Times Square sushi and cocktails. SPEAKING OF FELA! My girl Marcia Pendelton booked me to interview lead producer Steve Hendel on Broadway musical FELA! along with two cast members Onika and Farai – all of whom shed light on the life FELA! will have after it closes at the top of 2011 (including a run in London in The West End; filmed version available in DC; filmed version available in Europe; a state-side road tour; and preps for a feature film adaptation). My boys Rod and Marlynn came out. The legendary Melvin Van Peebles was in the house. Marva Hicks and my girl Sidra were also in the house. And a host of others.

LEBLON

After my FELA! duties, I joined Ant for an exclusive seated dinner event at the brand-new SOHO destination LANI KAI cocktail bar – including producers from “The View”; DR. Mixologist Darryl Robinson; and Founder & President of LEBLON (natural cane cachaca-brasil). Our girlfriend Donna Torrence put all of this together. Then, we joined Travis & company at NO PARKING for Monday night karaoke – including two performers from “Naked Boys Singing” and a clothed boy, ME. LOL!

DINNER WITH NOOT

My nephew invited me to dinner (on him) one night. The old Houston’s (now Hillstone) was his choice. SO SWEET OF HIM, RIGHT? And for all of my goings and comings, this – its own – was truly a highlight. We got to catch up on his new job and new digs. And as he navigates through this thing called “adult”-hood, I’m excited to be a listening ear for him (as I – knocking on 40 – am still trying to figure “adult”-hood out). The journey continues… and it’s WONDERFUL! Then, Ant and I popped by Nathan Hale Williams’ “Classic” night at our NATIVE (where we do ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS).

CHICAGO QUICKIE

So, I wasn’t in Chicago long enough to get homesick, but I did have to go there for business. On Night 2 of 4, after a full day of a writing/editing session, my Ti-Ti insisted I join her at The House of Blues for Michigan Avenue magazine's cover of Jennifer Hudson who brilliantly performed "And I Am Telling You" and "I Will Always Love You" bombastic-like (yet inside her new-Naomi-Campbell body). Also ran into NYC buddy Waddie. And one of my work buddies Joe was there too. Always an adventure with Ti-Ti, even though I didn't get my photo op with J-Hud (There's always a file photo. LOL!!!! Thanks boo! Then, on Night 3 of 4, my best Chicago buddies Eddie and Chicago Carl insisted I give them some fun time. They wanted to get in on my karaoke jones. So, they took me to Blue Frog Bar & Grill - so they could see what the hype is all about. Not only were they sold with my performances, but they jumped up and joined in on Hall & Oates' "Sara Smile" which Eddie led brilliantly (GO EDDIE!). Unfortunately, after a late-night bite at Dublin's Restaurant, Eddie's towed car left a bad taste in our night. STILL, we'll always have memories of our fun-filled, musical night in Chicago.

EL DEBARGE

Well, you know I am close friends with the first cousins of the Debarges: my Sherry & Shelly. Yes! They're twins! As a result, Chico has accepted me as family. And since Sherry and Shelly introduced us, we hit it off. Plus, I've volunteered my 'falsetto' services to the background of any of his dates. And we've bumped into each other a time or two right here in New York City. The ladies vouch for me. And recently in San Diego, El did the like. I was invited to an intimate set that El performed at SOBs last week, but wasn’t able to make it for my business in Chicago (I will see him on Monday when he opens for Mary J. Blige at Radio City Music Hall). With that, my Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts was in the house by way of LIVE! FROM FRONT ROW and he’s letting me share his review and clips with you here. ENJOY!

The LIVE! Review: 

El DeBarge's 'Second Chance' With Fans on Memory Lane

El DeBarge danced to the salsa-infused beat of "Rhythm of the Night" at the close of his S.O.B.'s show in New York last night.  A sea of fans cheered him on as his hip-shaking salsa morphed into an almost holy dance.  If the playful bounce in his swift steps were any indication, he had reason to let loose and celebrate. 

It was just under two years ago that the soulful singer, an R&B mainstay in the 1980's as front man to his group of singing siblings as DeBarge, finished a prison sentence for drug possession.  A lengthy battle with drugs and the law sidelined his career for well over a decade. 

DeBarge says he's been clean for two years and wants a chance to prove himself again.  With a new record deal and a forthcoming album, Second Chance, the singer is restarting his career. 

Last night's intimate show, one of a handful of spot dates this fall, was a chance to reconnect with his fans, whose loyalty showed in their incessant screams.  When he entered the stage, DeBarge seemed to freeze with distraction as he sat at the keyboard and grinned through the thunderous cheers.  He fumbled through the first verse of "Stay With Me," but nobody seemed to mind.  

Cameras flashed about the stage as DeBarge took fans down memory lane with number one hits like "All This Love" and "Time Will Reveal."  It was like 1983 all over again as he worked the crowd and led them in nostalgic sing-along's. 

"Can I reach out and touch you just like that," he sang melodically.  And fans his screamed some more.  "It's all about love," he crooned. 

His signature falsetto remains in virtually the same condition as in his younger years.  So does his boyish smile.  Perspiration glistened on the youthful skin of his forehead, but he was just warming up.

You know, I grew up on Gospel music and still consider it one of my favorite genres. Well, we lost one of our pioneers this week: ALBERTINA WALKER. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard her voice blasting throughout my childhood homes. A TRUE LIVING LEGEND! R.I.P.

FAITH AS FLORENCE BALLARD

SHOUT OUT TO BRILLIANT CASTING! I didn’t know that a bio-pic was being worked on about original Supreme Florence Ballard (left). She is the inspiration for all-things-Effie-White from ‘Dreamgirls’. Unfortunately, Florence died on welfare in the mid-‘70s and would never have the chance to re-claim the spotlight as Effie White did. Well, one of my favorite r&b/hip-hop divas Faith Evans says she has landed the role of Florence Ballard in this project. This news comes while Faith is out promoting her  new CD “Something About Faith”.  GO FAITH! (I had the chance to play a cop in her debut video “You Used To Love Me” – quite the exciting opportunity made possible by my friend Tracey Moore, a casting director at the time who has now added director/producer/writer to her multi-hyphenated brand in addition to acting teacher/coach a la “The Spirited Actor” acting courses). And I LOVE Faith's new song!

URBAN WORLD FILM FESTIVAL

Then, with Clint; our friend Sidra; and new friend Sophia in tow, we stepped to One 7 for karaoke where Miss Sophia joined in on all of the “sangin’” fun! FASHION WEEK – PART ONE

Fashion Week in New York City is always a circus! This year was no exception. My friend Ron Smith insisted I come out and play. On the publicity tip, he represents Romas by Linda Rowe Thomas – a courageous burn victim whose sense of style is on fire. Her FABULOUS show at Skylight West featured her Spring 2011 line and it all underscored her resillience and amazing creative vision. Her models included  “America’s Next Top Model”s Veronda; and “Real Housewives of NY”s Alex.  In attendance, my buddy Mario; creative director Mykel; my dear friend Tracey Moore; “Bernie Mac”s own Kellita Smith (who is such a joy, I had to see her one more time. Plus, she wanted to join us for ALL-STAR KARAOKE, but scheduling didn't allow. NEXT TIME, KELLITA!!!! XO); fine artist Stanley Carr Jr.; and a host of others. Afterwards, Mykel; Toyce; my Mario; and I enjoyed a lite bite at T.S. Ma Asian Cuisine & Sushi Bar. Then, Ant & I joined my platonic boo Carl and others. The event?Indashio’s 2011 Collection at the Metropolitan Pavillion – starring Amber Rose (of Kanye West-fame); and ANTM's Caridee; and Jasline. Diddy’s mom Janice was in the house! I met – for the first time – THE FABULOUS Tracey Ferguson (of “Jones Magazine” fame and CENTRIC’s “Keeping up with the Joneses”) – close friends with my favorite twins Sherry & Shelly Mcadoo. She was so sweet and invited us to her magazine’s event the following night! CONGRATS, INDASHIO!

Speaking of my glo-TV buddies Maurice, Richard, and George… they just spent some time at The White House last week (during the Congressional Black Caucus) in promotion of the first Urban LGBT Network of which I’ve been a recurring part since its Labor Day launch. LECRAE

My boy Gil Robertson invited me to Capital Grille to meet his client Lecrae, Christian hip-hop artist. Other journalists in attendance included ESSENCE's Cori Murray; Marcia Cole; and BET's Tracey Cooper who saw another repeat of me on "Million Dollar Password" a la The Game Show Channel. Lecrae is a good guy with a solid head on his shoulders and lots of creativity to boot. He is truly one to watch. On that same day, my phone was ringing off the hook with folks who saw Ant and me in the audience of “The Nate Berkus Show” with our beloved Kim Coles.

CHASING KIM COLES

Kim Coles is a girlfriend. And she’s been spending a little time in New York City of late on special assignment for “The Nate Berkus Show”. In a twist of small world moments, my girl Sidra invited us out to New Rochelle for a signature event she hosts. The immaculate home of our New Ro buddy Chenoa Maxwell and her husband Carlyle Peake was the backdrop. Alma tequila comprised the special cocktail du jour. We nibbled on Indian haute cuisine from Rangoli. And Kim Coles was in the house as this “revolution” was televised by “The Nate Berkus Show”. More details once this airs. WE HAD A BLAST!

MARA & TOMMIE

With my new (with a bullet) "Amazing Grace" Mara Schiavocampo back in town and my schedule – of late – keeping me close to home, we are spending as much time together as possible (with our beaus Tommie and Ant in tow) because we ALWAYS have so much fun (Her BIRTHDAY is coming up!).  Our favorite couple called us to join them at MOJO HARLEM – owned by the ever-gracious Mounir Jabrane. This, a few days after we enjoyed a block party they hosted along with our girlfriend/their neighbor Sidra. TV personality/Interior Designer Elaine Griffin was in the house. She and I - strangers one to the other - once shared a flight to Paris, France en route to respective assignments. Ern and I have Georgia in common with her as well (Elaine: from Brunswick; Ern & me: from Savannah).Buddy Diaz and BFF Ern joined us for another wonderful outdoor event. This, as the leaves are changing and the climate getting a little crispier with each advancing Fall day.  LOVE YOU GUYS!

9/11 – A REFLECTION

He’s been on quite the media blitz, including “The Wendy Williams Show” which featured a fashion show segment that Ant was a big part of producing. LOVE THE SYNERGY! LOVE LLOYD!!!!

I WAS NOT READY for Janet Jackson to enter the hall from the rear of the orchestra via the aisle--MY AISLE!!!  I will never wash my hand again!!!  As you can see from the video, I was barely able to focus on videotaping with JANET FUCKING JACKSON walking down the aisle toward me.  She entered with "The Pleasure Principle,' and shook hands as she sauntered down the aisle.  I think if I had paused to think about what was happening, I would have needed an IV drip.  She didn't look at me, but she SHOOK MY HAND.  <fainting>

There was a night Ant and I happened upon “my karaoke pusher men” Dante and Michael – both of whom hipped me to the pastime, even in the afternoon.

Then, there was the surprise birthday party for our buddy Javier whose partner Marco invited us out to celebrate. Since this was at our regular spot One 7, we invited my “Amazing Grace” Nichole to come by and celebrate her birthday. She sang. She brought friends – including Troy and Danielle. And our mutual buddy Dawn provided us much voice and song that I’m excited to have you all hear at one of our NATIVE nights. And one night, I got to sing with Amber Dirks of KOPATECHNIC fame (www.kopatechnic.com). She’s an AWESOME DIVA and has sung with many of the greats. Her production team has done AMAZING work with many – including CeCe Peniston. One night, Greg, Khalid, Ern, Ant, and I did karaoke.After a round of cocktails with friends at the Hudson Terrace, we enjoyed a musical walk down memory lane. On that night, we got our first try-out of the New Pink Tea Cup - including the grits, catfish, potato salad, and the many familiar faces from its staff. A walk to Ern’s car inspired a familiar voice in the air. It was my friend Jensen Atwood (Wade from "Noah's Arc"). He and I always stumble into each other – no matter which city we’re in. I last bumped into him in Chicago while there on an extended assignment in the Spring, earlier this year. We had a lovely exchange before calling it a night.

ON THE AIR

So, of course, as I “sing for my supper” (or – at least – for a snack), I am taking meetings and networking feverishly to identify some good fit work inside my brand as independent personality/producer/writer. Nothing so concrete has popped up yet, but I’m operating and navigating to POSSIBILITIES only. So, even as the budget is tight, I STAND and TRUST my GOD and our UNIVERSE to have my back. BLACK WOMAN’S AGENDA

I get my 3^rd ESSENCE Magazine (www.essence.com) by-line in the current 40^th Anniversary issue of the popular magazine. I contributed – as reporter/researcher – to The Black Woman’s Agenda, comparing African American women from 1970 to African American women today (in a multitude of categories). Meanwhile, I was super excited to bump into girlfriend Kim Coles who is busy as ever on her own agenda that promises to empower not only Black women but ALL OF US (www.openthegifts.com). I got an invite to see the taping of “The Nate Berkus Show” and Kim Coles was the guest. You’ll have to wait and see all that she talked about, but afterwards, she had Kim Coles’ G.I.F.T.S. for Ant and me :a new empowerment program that helps participants step into their authentic selves; share their unique qualities with the world; and soar into a joyful and passionate life. Too, it was great to see other friends who work for the show - including "My Ivory" (the “other” Nathaniel) and my Reeny (with whom I worked on “Monica: Still Standing” and “Frankie & Neffe” in Atlanta and L.A.). Ant and his work buddies Lorraine, Kemar, and Alia were our dates. Afterwards, we enjoyed a quick lunch at Hudson Eatery.

KEM

Another KIM (spelled KEM) celebrated something this past week. Detroit’s-own Kem’s third album INTIMACY came out. We went to his private CD release party at Tillman’s. Friends Devon Christopher (BLEU Magazine); Bevy Smith; Jamie Foster Brown (Sister 2 Sister); Elise Finch (CBS Meteorologist); were in the house. And of course, label prez Sylvia Rhone was the host with the most. Afterwards, did a little rooftop action at Fashion 26: A Wyndham Hotel. My Morehouse buddy Eddie reminds me that I sang KEM’s “You Are” at his wedding.

BREAKING BREAD

The GREAT thing about the SUMMER… and my friends, in particular: WE LOVE TO EAT! And THEY LOVE TO ENTERTAIN! And HARLEM is usually the backdrop. And though these are hard times for many, it’s WONDERFUL to BATHE in the FELLOWSHIP of friends. This past Saturday, friends Robin & Zach hosted a well-appointed brunch at their Harlem pad. Tasty spread of shrimp, cheese grits, Caesar salad, champagne, and a great lemonade w/brown sugar in the mix. That night, another meal (of a handful in the last couple of weeks) at Sidra’s place. It was neighborhood pizza & “Mahogany” on this particular night. On another evening, it was another pizza place & watching “Real Housewives of D.C.” in which our friends Paul Wharton, Ted Gibson, and Jason Backe are featured. But we’ve also done African cuisine; West Indian; and her home-spun pastas and veggies. One night, we had our Tommie (Mara's hubby) pop down to join us. On another night, my friend Kevin (Moochie) was in the house. One recent night, my nephew came by as he too is a Harlem resident now. He and his roommate Harrison allowed us to crash one night as they hosted a dinner party. This, since he wanted to see my dear friend Tata. She’d invited Ant and me to join her for the Harlem Week Street Festival. Her company had a booth there. We ran into buddies Will; Tommie; Jamar; Nina; Seitu; Dwayne; KiKi; and our favorite City Gym Boys. Some of the fellows were out - selling the fitness company's calendars which benefit the mentoring of young men and women on the lifelong benefits of fitness and exercise (www.citygymboys.com).  My buddy Natalie was promoting the upcoming Broadway revival “Driving Miss Daisy” – starring James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave. And this was but a second day of hanging with our friend Will. He invited Tommie, Ant, and me up for poolside fellowship and dinner at his Nyack, NY pad. Like Will, another favorite DP James Curry (who shot some of our pilot project) was in attendance with his lovely wife Lisa in tow. We ended up at Tarantella for pizza. Since last I updated, I had a business dinner with dear and old friend Zabrina (BET PR) and her friend Eric, who is a hair stylist extraordinaire - including clients like Carol's Daughter. We ate at Delta Grill. Also, stumbled into our buddies Melvin and Derrick in the streets of NYC en route home. I LOVE NEW YORK for that! I also happened upon old friend Steve Van Patten who is making his mark in the the Vampire Novel literary genre. He's published two volumes of Brookwater's Curse with one more on the way. THE FABULOUS MS. JO THOMPSON & SON!

The Metropolitan Room was the place to be last night for the FABULOUS MS. JO THOMPSON's tribute to LENA HORNE! (My buddy Gregory Generet has also been performing there over the last month). You recall, I mentioned my dear friend and NABJ brother, Greg Dunmore, is the son and manager of jazz vocalist and pianist Jo Thompson. Her set was called the “Lena Horne Salute  - THANK YOU LENA!!!” (Conceived by Greg himself). And it was Jo Thompson with the JC Heard Orchestra. The elegant set was directed by Walt Szymanski. Additionally, this special event will mark the official CD Release of “Jo Thompson: Forever Fabulous!!!” (with the JC Heard Orchestra directed by Walt Szymanski) on the Jazz Jewels Digital Label (www.jazzjewels.tv/jothompsonepk.html). In addition to all of my favorites, Jo did a FABULOUS finale reading of “Believe in Yourself” as inspired by Lena Horne from the cult classic film “The Wiz”. Extra shout out to Greg. You know, we just got back from San Diego. The NABJ A&E Task Force honored JET Magazine’s Clarence Waldron with our 2010 Legacy Award. Greg – Co-Chair of the task force (which I Chair) – produced (in cooperation with Pulse Beat TV – www.pulsebeat.tv) a wonderful tribute to Clarence – including remarks from Miss Aretha Franklin; Miss Nancy Wilson; Miss Dionne Warwick; Brandy; India.Arie; and a host of others. EXTRAVAGANZA ELEGANZA!

So, this past weekend, I got to do a couple of roll-bys: LATEX BALL @ Roseland Ballroom (AIDS benefit put on by the GMHC). We saw GREAT FACE & the faces of friends Derrick, Toyce, and RU DRAG RACE DIVA BeBe Zahara Benet (who is so SWEET & FABULOUS!). Then, we went to SECRET to see our buddy Demarco Majors who celebrated his birthday. He was so happy that we came. And it was great to see friends Patrik-Ian Polk; Seitu; and a host of our other buddies we’ve been seeing a lot here in the summer months. I LOVE IT! Patrik (Creator of “Noah’s Arc”) – in fact – attended our buddy Nathan Hale Williams’ set at NYC’s ROAM. This evening was also the backdrop for our friend Ra-Fael Blanco’s birthday celebration. Our Teaneck, NJ-buddy Robert attended with us. And Momentum buddy Bariek was in the house as well. We also got some FAB BEACH TIME in. It brought The Pines on Fire Island; a lovely beach house; relaxation; and lots of laughs amongst friends – including Ern. After a great day of fun in the sun, we went to girlfriend Cindy and her husband-to-be John’s engagement party at Le Souk. Great food! Great people! And a BIG SNAKE!

P.S. FELA!

So my dear friend Marcia Pendelton (www.walktallgirlproductions.com) who works marketing and audience for mostly all of Broadway's big shows alerted me that FELA! is welcoming Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum recording artist Patti LaBelle to its cast on Tuesday, September 14. She will take over the role of Fela’s mother (Funmilayo Anikulapo-Kuti) through Sunday, January 2, 2011, when the show will play its final scheduled performance. Tony Award-winner Lillias White (who received a 2010 Tony Nomination for her performance in this production) will play her final performance on September 12. Fela! received three 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Choreography, Best Costume Design and Best Sound Design. It is currently playing at Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre (230 West 49th Street) where it opened to rave reviews on November 23. So, there’s nothing like six weeks of steady work in my industry. Twelve weeks is good too. And when creativity and good vibrations are folded in, it’s ON! With all of that in place, I too felt good to be able to take a few days to leave the aforementioned circumstances to return home – just for the weekend – to celebrate my Ant’s birthday.  And though I had homework, it was so cool to be able to oversee my long-standing plans to celebrate all things Ant. There was a karaoke party that he requested for he, his friends, fam, co-workers, and I to enjoy… and that we did. It was his fellow co-worker Joi's birthday too - so she shared in the celebration (She is in the audience department for 'The Wendy Williams Show' and Wendy's warm-up). We chose a different spot: KARAOKE TOP TUNES (www.karaoketoptunes.com) and even with some spring fever, I managed to serenade him his favorite tunes – including “This Woman’s Work” (http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/video/video.php?v=390384328736&ref=mf). And he and I did our favorites. Plus, Joe and I did some TV theme songs. But mostly, our guests enjoyed singing all of their songs… and keeping the energy in the room alive. It was so much FUN! On Friday, Ern & I took Ant to one of his favorite dining experiences Houston’s in Hackenack, NJ (www.hillstone.com) – some local flavor. And wherever we would go, the servers were happy to provide a little celebratory sweet. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! But Saturday, we went international – EGYPT to be exact to the KING TUT Exhibit which opened that weekend at the Discovery Time Square Exposition (www.discoverytsx.com/exhibitions/kingtut). Our girlfriends Manivone and Cy joined us for the audio tour and 3-D movie.  ANT loves all things EGYPT! In fact, his alter ego is AKHENATEN – King Tut and Nefertiti’s son. Given Ant took me to Manila to see Beyonce for my birthday, I figured I'd do a little something - if just virtual. LOL! Someday soon, we'll get there. After that exploration, we went to Cafeteria (www.cafeteriagroup.com). Our girlfriend Cristal was in town from Atlanta. So, she and Ern joined us in the city. Then, we went to our main karaoke spot One 7 (www.karaoke17.com).

And Sunday capped us off on Broadway – where we met – to see Denzel Washington in “August Wilson’s Fences” (www.fencesonbroadway.com). We stumbled into some of our dear friends – including Tracey Moore (http://www.thespiritedactor.com/biography.cfm) from whom Ant recently took some acting lessons. Also, my fellow NABJ (www.nabj.org) buddies Harriette Cole (EBONY’s own – www.johnsonpublishing.com) and Ms. Karyn Collins – founder of the NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force (www.karyncollins.com). And Ant and I adore our girlfriend CJ. Well, we too love her husband Herman who brought his sister to the show. And we even got some photo ops with a couple of the cast members Russell Hornsby who I recognized from “Lincoln Heights” and a couple of “Girlfriends” episodes (Toni’s little brother). Also, Stephen McKinley Henderson stopped to greet us; He plays opposite Denzel through most of the production.  After Denzel and company did their thing, we joined Charlie T and Danielle who treated us to Ant’s birthday Sunday dinner at Room Service (www.roomservicerestaurant.com). The food is thai. The company was great. And of course, there was another sweet to celebrate it all. We capped the night off with a night cap at El Morocco (www.elmorocconyc.com) before turning in for what was an early Monday morning both ways.

I had to hop on a plane back to Chicago to wrap up this six-week project. And of course, with the work days, I got to continue my taste through Chicago each night:

On Monday, Rockit Bar & Grill was our backdrop for dinner and drinks (www.rockitbarandgrill.com). This, for Itika’s SCENE blog on www.cheekychicago.com. Though out of salmon (due to the Island volcano eruption, we're told), we enjoyed the company with several of her friends – including my Morehouse brothers, Dell & Corey. Afterwards, Carl & I did an encore appearance at REPUBLIC for the drag show. This, while missing the season finale of RUPAUL's DRAG RACE! But now I know that TYRA – the other TYRA - SANCHEZ won… and I got to see it on a VH-1 re-airing! JOB WELL DONE!

On Tuesday: After a busy day of work on Tuesday in Chicago, Chicago Carl took me to Adobo Grill (www.adobogrill.com/) for some delicious Mexican cuisine. We were joined by Vince who joined me in an impromptu concert culled from our "favorite" Jennifer Holliday. We sang a cappella. On Wednesday, my Morehouse BFF Eddie joined me for dinner. We did prime rib and jazz at BANDERA restaurant  (www.hillstone.com) – our take two in as many weeks. But they were out of prime rib last week.

And last night, on the eve of my Chicago departure, my Itika orchestrated a little agenda for us. She took me to an independent film premiere Black Butterfly (www.blackbutterflymovie.com).     There were elements to this film that were truly endearing. Other parts uneven. But overall, we really enjoyed the evening. And Itika and I love to experience the triumph of independent filmmakers - bringing their labor of love to life. Afterwards, we met up with Chi Carl at Market (www.marketbarchicago.com) to toast our great time in Chi. Then, my NABJ mentee Danyella (who worked with me on "Monica: Still Standing" & "Frankie & Neffe") and her beau Jason - also an emerging journalist and member of NABJ - joined us. And we had a GREAT NIGHT!

TODAY… I’m wrapping up the project… and getting ready to head back to NYC… and I’m poised for WHAT’S NEXT? No answers yet. But I have a little window to breathe as these next few checks trickle out over the next month or so. Will work for FOOD! SMILE! And I am TRUSTING my next rung of ABUNDANCE to be right around the BEND as I manage this current revenue stream delicately.
