Some features to look forward to:
1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.
2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".
3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.
4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

Dear Young Morehouse
GOING TO THE CHAPEL?
Not yet. But ‘the law’ and ‘public opinion’ seem to be getting us closer to my choosing to have that option everyday. Whenever I'm approached to speak on something personally controversial, I get a butterfly in my belly (at risk of hurting someone's feelings or not wanting to rock the boat), but shout out to NBC News Correspondent Mara Schiavocampo for asking... and the many who have validated my thoughts and heart! As always, THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! http://thegrio.com/2012/05/21/does-the-naacp-gay-marriage-resolution-matter-to-black-america/ I’m looking forward to sharing more published works (inside my brand: ‘pop culture’ & ‘possibilities’) that explore even more aspects of this ever-evolving topic in America.
WENDY 500
Also: shout out to Mara Schiavocampo on her Wendy Williams' profile which ran recently on WEEKEND TODAY: http://video.today.msnbc.msn.com/today/47486415! A BFF and a recurring client make beautiful TV together! HOW YOU DOIN'? XO And as small worlds get smaller, we all were under one roof for WENDY’s celebration of 500 SHOWS! The ELEMENT was the back-drop for the celebration that toasted shows done and the many more to come. Was great to attend with Mara given she’d just profiled Wendy and had justquoted me in a Grio (www.grio.com) piece. I considered it a double honor to have contributed (as freelance field producer) to some of those shows: (1) http://www.wendyshow.com/2011/10/24/british-virgin-islands/
(2) http://www.wendyshow.com/2011/10/26/british-virgin-islands-food (3) http://www.wendyshow.com/2011/12/16/family-dollar-holiday-dash/ (4) Black History Month with "My Black Is Beautiful" (Proctor & Gamble): http://www.wendyshow.com/MyBlackIsBeautiful/. Many friends, colleagues, and society associates were in the house – including: NABJ brother (recently SNL’d) Stephen A. Smith; Mecca Moore (Publicist and Associate Publisher of Pynk Magazine) [who I saw just the night prior with friend Devon Johnson (Publisher of Bleu and Pynk Magazine) at the NYC Premiere of L.A. Hair); Priya Scoggins (designer and producer/personality); Musa Jackson; Tonya Lee (Writer and wife of Spike Lee); Spencer Means (NYC realtor for the stars); Carlton Jared Lockett (Jones Magazine); Chastity Saunders (Avenue Pink); etc. Before we came to the party, Ant and I got to FINALLY give Mara and her husband Tommie’s Nina her “1st Magic Kingdom swag”: a Minnie Mouse bib! She instantly LOVED it! After the ‘Wendy’ set, we got in a little karaoke for kicks at BOHO KARAOKE on the Lower East Side, and look who we ran into? Our NABJ sister and fellow journalist extraordinaire Lola Ogunnaike who was getting her karaoke on, she says, for the first time! I LOVE KARAOKE (and NYC even more)! CONGRATS WENDY WILLIAMS & TEAM! Hardest working team I've seen of late... in the BIZ-NESS!
NYABJ
Mara and I also recently attended the New York Association of Black Journalists' 24th Annual Scholarship & Awards Ceremony together. The event was held at The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center (and the competition which had a finalist prize for Beyonce and Essence) was SOLD OUT! While minding my business on projects with recurring clients BET and The Links, Incorporated (in casual, but kinda' transitional rags), my NABJ BFF Mara Schiavocampo called with an 11th hour invitation to escort her (and as a result, I got to wish her hubby and my dear friend Tommie Porter a Happy Birthday when I went to pick her up [One of his gifts: Babysitting Nina while mom handled her NABJ Regional Director duties]). We sat at the NBC table, but this precursor to the NABJ Annual Convention (which is next month in New Orleans) gave me the chance to see so many of my NABJ family - including: NYABJ President Mike Feeney; Dwight Oestricher; Associated Press' Sonya Ross; GSABJ sister Henrietta Parker; PSABJ's Sarah Glover; former NYABJ Prez (under whom I served two terms at VP-Broadcast before serving as Region 1 Director some years back) Robin Stone; APOLLO's Nina Flowers; NBC/The Grio's David Wilson; PR icon Terrie Williams; Newscorp's Manny Smith; NYABJ budy Lynette Vallasco; my sometimes co-host for "Drums Along The Hudson", Tetiana Anderson; co-hosts for the night, Pat Battle and Shannon Lanier; my ESSENCE friends Constance White (Editor-in-Chief); Emil Wilbekin; and so many others friends - old and new. NYABJ's Eric Tait also saluted the life and career of our recently departed Gil Noble. GREAT NIGHT!
LA HAIR
Shout out to @WEtvPr @WEtv @135stagency @KimbleHairCare @pynkmag & @bleumagazine @devonisbleu Great times at the NYC Dinner Premiere of WE TV’s new L.A. HAIR (http://www.wetv.com/shows/la-hair) – starring Kim Kimble who I had the chance to produce a few years back (100 HAIRCUTS in 48 HOURS). She was quite a JOY…and so is her show. 135th Street Agency invited me out to PRANNA (www.prannarestaurant.com) to dine on a wonderful array of Modern Southeast Asian Cooking + Cocktails. And we got a sneak-peek of the very entertaining new addition to WE’s line-up of new, WOMEN-centric reality fare – including ‘The Braxtons: Family Values’ & ‘Mary Mary’. ASK CHLOE
I recently shouted out Chloe Hilliard (Editorial Director, www.TheLoop21.com) who I’ve known since she was 15, a student in the New York Association of Black Journalists’ High School Journalism Workshop for which I was an instructor (and co-director). I always knew she’d be a journalism star, maybe pro B-Ball player (And when last we were together, she was a panelist on a Q&A talk back I moderated with the cast of "Stick Fly"). But she’s now ADDITIONALLY working her magic as a stand-up comic. And she is now sharing her expert advice with the masses via her new web series. Here’s a sample:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhOm65kW1y0 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8mk7yy_GGw. If you have a question that needs expert advice submit them here: www.www.Blog.ChloeHilliard.com/ASK.

PROJECT 1 VOICE 2012
I’ve been asked to read stage direction in one act of a historic NYC reading – featuring an impressive cast that includes: Tony royalty Lillias White; Adriane Lennox; and many more! IT'S YEAR TWO OF: PROJECT 1 VOICE! http://www.project1voice.org/ Shout out to Erich McMillan-McCall, visionary and founder of Project 1 Voice (http://youtu.be/Je-I7sGHKvA). I’ve blogged about it: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/tag/project-1-voice. Was in last year’s SAVE-THE-DATE campaign: http://youtu.be/3hCSTtQNsyQ. It’s a day where you can take part in ensuring that funding keeps our black theaters open and vital. This initiative was created last year to bring attention to black theater companies. On June 18, theater companies and groups across the country will stage readings of “The Amen Corner,” James Baldwin’s 1954 work that looks at the role of the church in black communities. Last year’s reading of Alice Childress’ “Trouble in Mind” featured performances by Andre De Shields, Leslie Uggams, Peter Coyote, La Chanze, John Mahoney and many others across the country. PLEASE BE SURE TO COME OUT! http://www.project1voice.org/. Special shout out to Marcia Pendelton and Morehouse brother Charles Reese! How many of our Tri State area Alumni of Morehouse/Spelman along with other HBCUers on board will join us. Also: please don't forget to pick up your copy of the book version of James Baldwin A Soul On Fire. Available at Amazon. Visit www.jamesbaldwinasoulonfire.com. That’s Mr. Reese’s labor of love. SYNERGIES ABOUND!
“Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities” @ Spelman College Museum of Fine Art
Spelman College & Patrick L. Riley ask: "Who's Your Alter Ego?"
Spelman College Museum of Fine Art has partnered with my blog "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" in the promotion of “Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities,” an original exhibition on view through December 5, 2009. As a Morehouse Man, I consider this collaboration with my 'sister alma mater' a total honor.
The exhibit 'Undercover' (detailed in the attached documents) examines the social implications of race, gender, and disguise. And the Museum emphasizes works by and about women of the African Diaspora (and well-known, mid-career, and emerging artists are a part of this exhibit - detailed in the attached documents).
But to put some POP in the effort, the marketing team sought me out to ask some CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network (and representatives of CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network) some questions re: ALTER EGOs. The questions and responses follow:
WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO????:
CELEBRITIES WE KNOW & IN THEIR OWN RIGHT:
1. Mara Schiavocampo

NBC News Digital Correspondent

WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
Don't have one :(
WHY?
Good question. I'll have to work on that.
2. Ledisi
AGE: NEVER
Grammy-nominated singer
NEW CD “Turn Me Loose” and projects that empower women to love themselves. I am currently speaking to different Historic Black Universities and Colleges for UNCF (United Negro College Fund) being apart of an empowerment series to encourage students to be their best.
Los Angeles, CA
WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
I don't think I have one but if I did she would be an older woman in her 70's that's kinda like a preacher/evangelist with red high heels and loves hanging out at a juke joint in the 1930's. LOL!
WHY? Why I do not have one would be the question? The answer is because I want to stay as honest and as close to me on stage that is comfortable. That's why people like me. In my personal life I will say I am not as forward as the Ledisi I am on stage. I am very shy and nerdy. But all of who I am on stage is who I am off stage to some degree. LOL!
3. Mother Love
AGE: Middle Earlies

WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
Hannah the House Frau
WHY?
When I am not traveling, I am a homebody, I enjoy entertaining my family and friends. I am dangerously good with a glue gun, I make most of my own decorations and all my floral arrangements

My DIVA (DIVINELY INSPIRED VICTORIOUSLY ANOINTED) PROJECT is getting ready to make its way back to Africa and I am creating a few reality shows with a touch of real to them.
W. Hollywood, CA
WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
My alter ego is the DIVA. People often confuse her with Sheryl Lee but they are two very different women.
WHY?
Because she is bold, fearless, and will and can say all of the things Sheryl Lee would never think to say or do. She empowers me.
5. Bridget Bland

SPELMAN SISTER
Reality star: “Harlem Heights”
3RD year Law Student at Rutgers Law Newark; entertainment columnist for BV Newswire; launching a brand-engagement firm called What’Snext

WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
My alter ego is comparable to a mix between Naomi Campbell and Wendy
Williams.
WHY?
She is loud, hilarious, accomplished, in your face, she
sees through the bull and isn't afraid to tell you. She is poised,
fashion forward and has little tact., but endearing in a sister girl way.
6. Tamala Jones
Actress
Los Angeles, CA
WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
My alter ego is Tay Tay Lasha.
WHY?
Tay Tay Lashay is all show business. She is both new & old Hollywood rolled into one. Smart & sassy. She’s able to walk in & shut a room down. Everybody loves Ms. Lashay because she is filled with fun, laughter, and she’s a whole lot of woman.

"We are going to be in the business of posting our children's dreams and not their bail!" . The campaign is currently posted on Parentpowernow.com. I have established a production company , Great Day Productions, and am currently developing television, movie and stage projects.

WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
A combination of my mother and my maternal grandmother.
WHY?
My mother who well into her 80's drives a convertible sports car, is sassy, feisty, takes tai chi classes, travels extensively throughout the world, loves to play the slot machines and still supports many charitable causes including the AIDS ministry that she founded in our church and my maternal grandmother who was self educated, as tough a woman as you will find, took no mess, a mother of nine children and a hard nose businesswoman!

WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO? PATTI LABELLE
WHY? Because when I'm in the shower and I belt out "CREOLE LADY MARMALAAAAAAAADE!!!!!", I sound just like her! Truth be told, I couldn't carry a note if I had a bucket to put it in, so singing is a talent I have often wished I possessed. But, Patti LaBelle is the entire package - a beautiful, supreme diva with a God-given gift and a glorious, kind soul that surrounds it. I adore her so much and was blessed that she lent her "voice" to my book, "Exactly As I Am" on girls and self-esteem.

I've always strived to be that sort of woman--who can use her talent and influence to make the world a better place.

7. Karen Mauldin Ceesay
Spelman sister
Actress/Producer
I shot "Drop Dead Diva" & "One Tree Hill" this summer - currently producing a sitcom I wrote for the internet, "loosely" based on the First Family & current administration.
Atlanta, GA
WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
Don't have a specific name, but I definitely change my image whenever I go to LA. I really watch what I eat and workout intensely before I head out so I can wear outfits I would never wear here in Atlanta. And I forget I'm somebody's Mama - just kidding, kinda. I call myself a drag queen sometimes. I love wearing the wigs/weaves & the short, short, dresses or tight pants, but it's a bit much for all the time. I love my low-key jogging pants or jeans & sneakers look for day-to-day, but LOVE going full glam whenever I can. The funny thing is when I run into people from my gym out in the "real world", they barely recognize me, but the gym me is the real me - no make-up, natural hair (scarf optional), old sweat pants and probably stinky.
WHY?
Even though Atlanta is very image-conscious, LA is completely different. Since I am an actress, how I look is very important, but not so important that I think it is what makes me - it's just a shell, something to draw people in. I'm normally very confident, but I love the attention I get when I'm in full-glam mode. And I love the fact that people enjoy talking to someone who's funny & personable, who they may have thought was just another pretty face.
8. Kelly Mitchell
Spelman Sister

WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO? Veterinarian
WHY? My alter ego is a veterinarian because I love animals and tend to be my most compassionate when I am around them. The peace and comfort I feel when I am interacting with an animal is unlike anything I feel with human interaction. I put my pretty, prissiness aside only in those moments. I am a dog owner and animal lover.
9. Karen Chilton
Author, “HAZEL SCOTT: The Pioneering Journey of a Jazz Pianist from Café Society to Hollywood to HUAC” (University of Michigan Press)

WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO? Jazz vocalist SARAH VAUGHAN
WHY? Music is my first artistic love. I studied classical piano as a child and fell in love with jazz growing up on the Southside of Chicago, while listening to the ‘Daddy O’Daly radio show’ with my parents on Sunday afternoons. Although there are dozens of jazz vocalists whom I adore, the lush vocals of Sarah Vaughan have always had, in my estimation, transformative power. She is (not was) the quintessential jazz vocalist, having the ability to transport listeners in a way that carries you inside of the song by virtue of her full-bodied interpretations of every note, every lyric. You’ve not heard “September Song” until you’ve heard Sarah sing it. “The Man I Love” is absolute magnificence pouring from her lips; “My Funny Valentine” and “Misty”—forget it! She used her musical gift to do what Art should do—move an audience to its feet, to inspire and uplift. And even with all my musical training, when asked to sing, I typically decline. In utter devotion to Sarah’s sound and style, I thought, if I can’t sing like Sarah, what’s the point? Sarah Vaughan’s legacy of true artistry, vocal grace and beauty endures. If I could fly back in time, I’d land on some smoky stage in a Parisian hideaway, blowing all night til my dress is soaked and my skin glistening with sweat, singing nostalgic tunes to an appreciative crowd, with a slamming trio at my back.

- I don't know (which African American women have the most compelling alter egos) because everyone I loved has always been themselves. I will say it was amazing watching clips of how shy Ella Fitzgerald was in her personal life. When she sang she was on fire. It reminded me of me. I love that part of her.

- Grace Jones. Her “male” alter ego was so strong, people believe she has a twin brother. Does she? (EDITOR’S NOTE: He does. But he is a bishop. Not a cross-dresser – further underscoring how compelling Grace’s masculine persona showed up.)
- Tina Turner. She created and became her alter ego in order to save herself. And it worked. Who’s Anna Mae?

- I think Beyonce has the best alter ego, Sasha Fierce. When Sasha hits the stage, you’re in for a major treat . Sasha makes you wish you could sing & move like her & I love her Divatude. When Beyonce leaves Sasha on the stage & is out just being Beyonce, you get a gentle, warm & inviting woman who you have to give praise to for working so hard.

* Oprah, Michelle Obama, Janet Jackson and Beyonce. To me these women have the best alter egos because they show you what they want to show you and it's not deceiving. They are doing what they do best without giving and sharing all of themselves, you've got to leave some things left unsaid and leave for the ones closest to you.

- Beyonce and Sasha Fierce. Beyonce has mastered having two sides and is alter ego. Period. She has mastered it because her fans love when she’s wind-milling her head on stage and giving the performance of a lifetime but we also appreciate the quiet, humble, Southern girl that’s Jay-Z’s wife.

- There are truly too many to name. We could all begin with our mothers and grandmothers, the fierce freedom fighters who held families and communities together with a smile, a touch, a selfless deed. Any Black woman, known and lesser known, who has been bold enough to express herself freely in spite of societal limitations, false perceptions, and stereotypes. This definition stretches far beyond the confines of entertainment, but includes women in every field of endeavor, from the performing arts to politics, education to medicine, the ministry to the military. It is through their (our) courageous example of unyielding fortitude that has helped shape and define Black womanhood for the world.

PATRICK’S ALTER EGO LIST
- Beyonce – Sasha Fierce
I mean, what can you say? She’s managed to craft something so obvious and cliché into a phenomena. And she’s just disciplined enough to make us believe she’s the sweet, humble, and demure girl from Texas with the boldness, fierceness, and DIVA-tude to generate SPARKS whenever she hits the stage inside her Sasha Fierce alter-ego. YOU GO, GIRL!
- Janet Jackson
So much of our identification with Janet stems from her being Michael and boys’ baby sister. Even as she worked her way through adolescence, she was the “good girl” or “the girl next door”. But then, when she found her CONTROL, she morphed into MISS JACKSON (IF YOU’RE NASTY) and we were sold… and have continued to buy her re-invented policy each time she goes darker, fiercer, and nastier…
- Grace Jones
When Grace Jones sang “My Jamaican Guy”, I remember thinking that maybe she was the guy. My pre-pubescent self couldn’t reconcile what I was seeing and if it was a man or a woman. But I knew it was compelling. Over time, I figured she was a woman. But her masculinity purred through so fiercely that I could only bow at her feet and exclaim: STRANGER!!!!!!!
- Kim Coles
So easy to get it twisted that my girlfriend Kim Coles is very much like her character Sinclaire who she played to convincing effect on Fox sitcom LIVING SINGLE. But hear me now, Ms. Kim Coles is nowhere getting her micro-braids stuck in the fax machine like her alter ego Sinclaire (one of many that the comic-timing expert has perfected over the years). Instead, she is truly a KIMPIRE – a woman that knows her worth and her brand. And has the bookings to prove it – including a run as the first African American game show host on BET’s “Pay It Off”.
- Nina Simone
To hear her sing “FOUR WOMEN” or “MISSISSIPPI GODDAMN”, you might think you’re listening to Fred Sanford as the raspy, husky, baritone coughs those notes out. But to see her behind the piano or the microphone with a crown of tresses stretching up to the sky, you’re clear that Nina Simone is an African Queen from another time and place. And she is FIERCE! No wonder she had to run away to Europe to maintain a following that understood her or didn’t mind being confused by her.
- Patti LaBelle
Patti’s real name is Patricia. And the first time that big voice was heard was in the church. But the world needed to hear her. And from Philly or wherever she is – with or without a mic, we hear her and we love her. But since she’s so shy, the woman we usually experience when she is in concert – at least those big shows in the ‘80s (fans growing out of her scalp and all), she was Priscilla – perhaps Sasha Fierce’s grandmother. And baby! Watch out! She might be flinging a lash and her four-inch heels.
- Vanessa Williams
We know Vanessa Williams has the right stuff. But for all of her multi-hyphenated splendor over these many years, how hot is it that in her 40s, she’s managed to convince us of yet another ‘alter ego’ in her person: Wilhelmina Slater on ABC’s “Ugly Betty”. If I didn’t personally know how sweet she was, I’d believe her Evillene-in-Prada bit.
- Kandi & the “Real Housewives of Atlanta”
So Atlanta-based photographer Derek Blanks has been doing alter ego photo shoots with all the Atlanta elite for years now. But on BRAVO’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta”, NeNe organized a shoot for all the ladies… and become the project’s director. They were to do what she said as their pose and their alter ego pose. Kandi decided to take the concept into her hands. She spoke of how she had to postpone her engagement party because a drunken driver hit one of her now-dead fiance's relatives. She used that as motivation to do something positive with the photo shoot, posing as both the drunk and the victim. NeNe decided that Lisa would pose as a good girl and as a bad girl. Lisa played along, and looked great. Kim refused NeNe's idea for her to pose as a black person, and instead posed as a Stepford wife and as a mistress. Sheree posed as herself, and as a sexy robber who wants "seven figures" -- a jab at her divorce. NeNe posed as a conservative woman at a strip club, and as a stripper.
- Mariah Carey
Mariah’s alter-egos – from Mimi to MC2 to “Imperfect Angel” to Butterfly to Charm bracelet to Rainbow --- all seem to spell Mariah. This, until her most recent “Obsessed” video when she showed up as her nemesis Eminem. Convincing though ill-advised. We just love you as Mariah! Keep singing pretty, girl!
- Diana Ross
When Miss Ross hits the stage, it’s narcissistic nirvana. She’s in that round or center stage. She’s in beautiful drag – from head to toe. There’s a spotlight. And all others are in the shadows of her glory. Who would know the degree to which she is – quite simply – mom with five successful examples to boot? But it’s true. Snatch off that wig and those lashes, throw you on some Uggs and a fanny pack, and drop by Ralphs and see what the most successful female singer in the history of pop is most proud of: Motherhood. 20 #1 songs notwithstanding and a bunch of other drama. For her, it’s BABY LOVE! And now, she must shed all that diva-ness --- one layer further --- as she steps into ‘grandmotherhood’ through oldest daughter Rhonda who just gave birth to her first child (and the first grandchild from any of Diana’s troop).

"LORD, I THANK YOU FOR MY LIFE!"
Smokie Norful - Dear God (Live)
It feels so good to make it this far
And I didn't think I could take it so long
There were days I wanted to quit
I said surely this is it but I held on
And I watched as so-called friends turn and walk away
It hurt so much I didn't have words to say
But even when my day turns to night and nothin' seems just right
Lord, I thank You for, for my life
For my life, Lord, I thank You
For every victory in You I've seen
And all the moments I know it was You who kept me
So I thank You for, for my life
And I watched you take my family from there to here
And when times where a lil' rough, God, I know You were near
And the moments I thought I'd fail, I was reminded of your nails
So I held on
And if I never live to see another day
There is nothin' I would change or take away
I've had so many ups that they far outweigh my downs
Lord, I thank You for my life
I realized some didn't make it
I could've been one of the ones who lost my way
And there was times, Lord, I knew I almost went crazy
But I'm still here with my life
It may not be all that I hope for
And every dream has not yet been realized
And to see Your face one day, God
I know it's all gonna be worth it
So I thank You, thank You for every mountain, every valley
God, everythin' You brought me through, thank You
I know, I know it was You
Just wanna take the time to say thank You Jesus, for my life
This song ‘bout had me driving off the 110 South as I was going to San Pedro this past Sunday. It says so much of what I feel inside as I am managing this L.A. living for which I am most grateful as it’s a good thing to work on a project you believe in. And even if – in my case – I’ve had to trek cross-country to hold onto it (and I have to dig even deeper into my pockets and my core to maintain my West Coast temporaries alongside my East Coast life back home), I know that I am covered and protected and supported by something and – surely – SOMEONE BIGGER THAN me.
The evidence is in MY LIFE: I am working – through likely February - on a team (as field and story producer) to bring Dubose Production’s “MONICA: STILL STANDING” to life (It premieres Tuesday, October 27th at 10:00 pm). I am also EXCITED that I am a contributing reporter on the "We Dream A World With an African American President in The White House" in the current issue of ESSENCE Magazine (Starting on p. 156, brothers - several of whom I interviewed - examine how the image of Black manhood is evolving). I’m getting lots of cool feedback! Please check it out!
Meanwhile, I’m having a blast inside my blog’s partnership with Spelman College Museum of Fine Art in the promotion of “Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities,” an original exhibition on view through December 5, 2009. (Spelman Museum Tour) As a Morehouse Man, I consider this collaboration with my 'sister alma mater' a total honor.
But to put some POP in the effort, the marketing team sought me out to ask some CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network (and representatives of CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network) some questions - the responses of which I’ll be sprinkling into my blog next week… as well as the exhibit’s website.
Look for fun responses from Spelman celebs like my girl Bridget Bland (of “Harlem Heights” fame) and TV actress Sharmell Sullivan Huffman; and others like NBC Digital Correspondent Mara Schiavocampo; soul singer Ledisi; style expert Michaela Angela Davis; DIVA Sheryl Lee Ralph; and many more. BY THE WAY, WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
Mariah Carey - ribbon (studio Version)
It's only been 20 good minutes since I kissed you
Come back boo, I miss you
Wish I had 20 million hours to caress you
And undress you, to be continued
Boy you, you don't know how it feels when you whisper in my ear
Boy you, you give my body chills whenever you are near
And boy I got your lovin' on my mind
I got your lovin' on my mind
You got me wrapped up, packed up
Ribbon with a bow on it
Sometimes we argue and we fight
But they better know that that's my baby
You might even think he cute
But everybody knows that I'm his lady
Every time you see us, we super fly
So proud he's by my side
He knows I'm ride or die
You don't know how we roll
Holla at your people
Boy you, you don't know how it feels when you whisper in my ear
Boy you, you give my body chills whenever you are near
Got ribbon with a bow on it baby
Boy you don't even know the things you do
I could spend my whole life with you
I got your lovin' on my mind
Baby I could spend my life with you
It's been 20 good minutes since I kissed you
Come back boo I miss you
Okay, so Ant played this new Mariah chestnut from her “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” and – like Janet’s “With U” from “20 Y.O.” – he’s declared this "our song". Of course, the crier that I am, the tears poured down my cheeks as I took him to the airport last week when he was here for DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING. (Truthfully this long distance doesn’t feel like it’s getting better. But now we have something to look forward to as I am going home for my birthday and Thanksgiving before returning to L.A. to complete the two months of post-production on MONICA).
In the meantime, we do what we can to stay amused respectively. Last week, my dear friend Zabrina (BET PR) called me in the 11th hour with a ticket to attend The Fox Reality Channel's 2009 REALLY Awards - chockfull of reality TVs best - including nominees and presenters Tiny & Toya - from the Dubose production family of which I'm apart these days a la "Monica: Still Standing" and "Frankie & Neffe". Also in attendance: Vivica A. Fox (host); Paris Hillton; Hugh Hefner; Claudia Jordan; Ray J; Hammer; Antonio Sabata; American Idol's 'bikini girl'; Nikki Hilton; Kim Kardashian; ATL Housewife Kim; Aaron Carter; Eric Roberts; Lorenzo Lamas; Melissa Rivers; Lance Bass; and more! After party was at AREA in West Hollywood.
Ant got to see PRECIOUS – a sneak peek of which I plan to see in the coming days here in L.A. Ant says it brought him chills and tears… and still haunts him throughout his days since he saw it. He says Mo’Nique should – for sure – win the Oscar.
My friends – new and old - have been there for me over these last days here in L.A.:
Got to connect with high school best friend Maurice Marable recently at Four Seasons (Beverly Hills). He was in town directing the new campaign for the new season of HBO series “Big Love”. Turns out he also directed Monica's campaign for BET. We are collaborating and didn't know it (since the content producing team is different from the ad campaign folks is even different from the crew that does the title sequence, who I just found out is my AUC brother Randy). We LOVE the synergy though! LOL!... and of course, the chance for Maurice and me to catch up as we're still quite close, but don't see each other often enough with our respective busy-ness.
Afterwards, connected with friends Brian, Li-Ling, and J for Fashion Week party at The O Hotel in Downtown L.A. And did I mention that Brian accidentally dropped my camera? Soon to be replaced. Meanwhile, this file photo of Maurice and me will have to do. http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/4/-weve-come-a-long-way-baby.html
And in the wake of a stressful Friday (date changes on L.A. project and assignment tweaks), my friends Brian and Kelly called me off the cliff and out (on them) - starting with Zanzibar in Santa Monica. Then, friends Derek & Keith asked us to join them at Dragonfly. And from there, Denny's (after Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles was closed). GOOD FRIENDS (and sponsors) can protect us from the damage a fall can do.
From that moment, friends Derek and Keith invited Brian and me to a rooftop set in Downtown L.A. yesterday. Good folks. Good food. Afterwards, Derek and I capped night off - briefly - in WEHO. Another spot to which he took me is La Velvet Margarita Cantina. On this night, I jaunted over to Tony & Scott's place to taste Scott's father's pound cake & Tony's red velvet cake. Love my friends for providing me cheap and/or sponsored comforts as I manage my East Coast/West Coast situation.
And to cap off this most recent weekend, many headed to Brian's San Pedro digs for a cookout (and more football! LOL!). And then, Derek, Keith, and I enjoyed an evening at THE ABBEY – all in a weekend.

Everybody look around
'Cause there's a reason to rejoice you see
Everybody come out
And let's commence to singing joyfully
Everybody look up
And feel the hope that we've been waiting for
Everybody's glad
Because our silent fear and dread is gone
Freedom, you see, has got our hearts singing so joyfully
Just look about
You owe it to yourself to check it out
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Everybody be glad
Because the sun is shining just for us
Everybody wake up
Into the morning into happiness
Hello world
It's like a different way of living now
And thank you world
We always knew that we'd be free somehow
In harmony
And show the world that we've got liberty
It's such a change
For us to live so independently
Freedom, you see, has got our hearts singing so joyfully
Just look about
You owe it to yourself to check it out
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Well, it should be no news that President Obama is being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! Go Obama! Yayyy Peace! Since my Diana was the featured performer at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Norway last year (Diana Ross - Supremes Medley live at the Nobel ...), of course I’ve been wondering who would be the featured entertainment this year. Ross has a show ready as she just performed in Amsterdam for two sold-out shows (30,000-seat arena) for the Symphonica in Rosso. This spectacular is an annual concert series that years prior featured Dutch artists Marco Borsato and Paul de Leeuw; and her former and fellow Motown mate and duet partner Lionel Richie. The show was BIG – featuring many costume changes; the 40-piece Symphonica in Rosso-orchestra; dancers; and Diana’s amazing voice and catalog – including Netherland favorites like “Ease on Down The Road”. And one of my favorites: “Brand New Day” (also an homage to her ‘Wiz’ co-star Michael Jackson) -

Meanwhile, “CALL TO THE OBAMAS? MISS ROSS is workin’ it… and notwithstanding a diaper change to her new grandbaby boy… could serve the world yet again with a sparkling performance of Nobel worthiness…”. Just saying…
Spelman College & Patrick L. Riley ask: "Who's Your Alter Ego?"
Hi folks,
Spelman College Museum of Fine Art has partnered with my blog "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" in the promotion of “Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities,” an original exhibition on view through December 5, 2009. As a Morehouse Man, I consider this collaboration with my 'sister alma mater' a total honor.

And the Museum emphasizes works by and about women of the African Diaspora (and well-known, mid-career, and emerging artists are a part of this exhibit - detailed in the attached documents).
But to put some POP in the effort, the marketing team sought me out to ask some CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network (and representatives of CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network) some questions - the responses of which we can sprinkle in my blog and on the exhibit's website.
AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS REPLY TO THE FOLLOWING VIA THIS EMAIL (Nothing formal. Just your answers... and any elaboration you choose to share):
1. WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
2. WHY?
3. IN YOUR OPINION, WHICH AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN HAVE THE BEST (OR MOST COMPELLING) ALTER EGOS?
4. PLEASE PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING:
NAME
AGE <optional>
CURRENT PROJECT(S)

With Chris Rock's "Good Hair", Disney's upcoming African American Princess Tiana ("The Princess and the Frog"), Mattel's new line of Black Barbies, it's clear that Black women are guiding and monitoring themselves throughout the world in a number of image-altering ways. With that, we want some feedback from you... and to see how ALTER EGOs show up in your life and the lives of the women we LOVE and ADMIRE - artistically, in reality, or both.
If you have any pointed questions, please email me at patarack@hotmail.com and/or patarack_riley@yahoo.com. If it's easier for us to talk about it on the phone, don't hesitate to call me at 201.965.7250.
And once I put my entries together for my blog or the exhibit's website, I'll be sure to send you the link.
I look forward to receiving your answers as soon as possible. I will begin to get these responses out to the site(s) by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23rd and they will continue to run through DECEMBER.
THANKS - as always - for your support!
