PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!

"...(KEEPING) THE MUSIC PLAYING..." ON MY "P-DAY"!!!

beyonce%20crop%20out.jpgSO WE’RE CLEAR: Anthony and I are not stalking Beyonce (nor are we obsessed). SMILE! We do love her though. And we have just been drawn to her endless energy of late (Did you see her country turn with the band Sugarland [ www.sugarlandmusic.com/ ] on The American Music Awards[abc.go.com/primetime/ama/index] - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvbHkKszkW4 – latest evidence that R&B and COUNTRY music aren’t too different when certain storytelling structures are present i.e. Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and All-4-One/John Michael Montgomery’s “I Swear”). And you also know that the synergy from B’s BDAY project and the companion world tour have been on our radar as well. I enjoyed her here in New York City and New Jersey back in the late summer. BEYONCE%20DREAMGIRLS.jpgThen, Anthony gifted me with a trip to Manila to see her perform to a sold-out audience, including her serenade of “Happy Birthday”… TO ME!beyonce%20crop%20out%202.jpg And on the heels of the big party (part 1 and part 2) that Anthony threw for me this past weekend (for the actual B-DAY – or as my nephew put it: P-DAY), he took me to see a premiere screening of her new LIVE DVD, which she filmed in Los Angeles in September (on her birthday): www.beyonceonline.com/ . We’re just riding the BEYONCE wave… and LOVING IT!!!beyonceconcertdvdfeat.jpg

Upon our return from Manila, scheduling got a bit dicey. Ant went right back to work. I gleaned that an assignment might come my way, but I also looked forward to the following weekend as we had longstanding commitments to attend my good girlfriend (from the world of journalism and the National Association of Black Journalists [www.nabj.org]) Deepti’s wedding to her love mate Brian. Additionally, we had an engagement party on the books and Anthony had a stateside birthday bash planned for me on Sunday night. THE BEST LAID PLANS as – on the eve of this weekend, I got a call from one of my clients that --- my social calendar notwithstanding --- there was an assignment WITH MY NAME ON IT… in PARIS! Though caught off guard and a bit irritated at the new stretch before me, I decided this could all be WIN-WIN. “I will make sure my friend and her new husband have our gift as I will order it on-line… plus, she’s a journalist for Associated Press. She’ll understand… “ and I thought: “… maybe Anthony would still attend on my behalf (as our friends Ern, Kimberly, one of my “Amazing Graces” Lisa Goodnight, and her beau Lex were all attending… and Ant gets along with them all)…and to further push his understanding button, I would have him postpone my birthday set for next week after Thanksgiving… and he’d understand,” I thought. I agreed to the assignment and began the work of preparing my travel and my shoot plan for this high-profile interview with a new, popular icon in fashion. IN THE END, showing reverence to my existing plans, someone else ended up being dispatched… and I was able to go with the weekend as planned, but what an emotional rollercoaster ride for that few hours where I was ready to jump in and shake the many longstanding plans up to have them show up just the same, but differently alongside this new business. It’s an anecdote that reflects brilliantly the way my life can be sometimes.

DEEPTHI%20AT%20WEDDING%202.jpgWith all of that hammered out, I had my weekend back and what a weekend it was. We attended the wedding which was nothing short of a wonderland. Deepti is South Asian/Indian and Hindu. Her Brian is West Indian and Christian. Together – with both of their traditions in tow – they bonded in LOVE. And to ensure all of her guests were on board, she made this day something to behold. It started with the traditional Hindu ceremony, which was beautiful. We didn’t get everything that was going on and – inside of that – there was levity and lightness around the music and the language. But it was great to experience. PATANTLISALEXKIMERN.jpgFrom there, we got to gather for a lunch/cocktail hour in which I got to get my “sugah” from my Lisa Goodnight and her fiancé Lex. It also brought us all back together again as I knew Deepti first – through NABJ. I introduced her to Lisa Goodnight, who introduced me to Kimberly Jajuan (and Lex, of course). Ern also met Kimberly Jajuan at one of Lisa’s events when she lived in New Jersey (“Ham & Egger Central”). And they’ve all embraced my Anthony, who is one of the family (to me… and them… now). After this break, there was the Christian ceremony – more in line with what we’ve all experienced, having attended so many weddings over the years. Deepti did another gown change – reminding me of my Diana. This ceremony was also special and beautiful. DEEPTHI%20AT%20CHRISTIAN%20WEDDING.jpgThen, there was a cocktail hour that offered a number of delicacies that did the trick. From there, we were escorted into a beautiful ballroom that transported us somewhere magical. The image of golden and blue trees were projected on the walls all around. BRIAN%20DEEPTHI%20RECEPTION%202.jpgAnthony and I even posed in front of a couple of them as it was so artful and funky. PAT%20AND%20TREE.jpgThe tables were decked out in beautiful reds and yellows. TABLE%20AT%20WEDDING.jpgAt this time, the bride – who’d yet to enter the reception – had someone bring me an envelope. ANT%20PAT%20AT%20DEEPTHI.jpgInside, there was a birthday card – a sign of Deepti’s thoughtfulness. Here we are at HER wedding, which she realizes I’m attending during what would have likely been a BDAY celebration (since my birthday is on Monday)… and to show her appreciation for spending the time with her and adjusting my own celebration day… she sends a card. She’s just so thoughtful like that. PAT%20AND%20BDAY%20CARD.jpgAnother young lady, my Erin - NABJ's Emerging Journalist of the Year... last year...  was also at my table. She just bought a house and Deepti sent a card of CONGRATULATIONS over to her. We were overwhelmed at the gesture. It was good to see Erin and - also from NABJ - now-Boston-based Greg Lee with whom I sat on the NABJ Board a few years ago. GREG%20PATRICK%20ERIN%20AT%20DEEPTHI.jpgFrom there, it was party time. Deepti – in a third ensemble – walked in the room hand-in-hand with her Brian and we all danced the night away. ANT%20LISA%20DANCE%20AT%20DEEPTHI.jpgWe were truly happy to be in the mix of LOVE, FRIENDSHIP, and MUSIC!ANT%20PAT%20DEEPTHI%20BRIAN.jpg

Speaking of MUSIC, Ant and I likely won’t have to ask “HOW DO YOU KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING?” (the way James Ingram and Patti Austin did) if we keep spending all of our time at Karaoke spots. This week, we shared the fun with a host of friends – all of whom Anthony gathered to celebrate my birthday. We started things out at One 7 – our spot ( www.karaoke17.com/ ). We took the big party room. BBQ catered. And so many loved ones came out to celebrate with me, I’m just so overwhelmed and full for it. But most importantly, we had fun. Though my Jason and Marqice were missing in action (GASP!!!!), they did send their well wishes and theirs (and the many others) meant a lot too. Where do I start? ROBERT%20PATRICK%20KARAOKE%201.jpgWell, let me look at the list: My Savannah homeboy/Morehouse brother Jeh and his significant other Delia came by to show some love. jehlillianetal.jpgAnt’s friends Robert and Marcos joined us along with their friend Rico.RICOMARCOSDIAZKAREEM.jpg My Diaz and his partner Kareem joined us. We always get together for celebrations and he’s graciously welcomed Ant into our social mix. Thanks D! Ern’s good work buddy Tina came and let us have it – in song. TINA%20KARAOKE%201.jpgKimberly Jajuan along with Kevin-Anthony (and a friend) and D’Ambrose covered my musical theater folks who have sung on the Great White Way, but decided to slum with those of us amateurs who get our expression on – karaoke-style. KIMBERLY%20KEVIN%20ANTHONY%20DAMBROSE.jpgOf course, my “Amazing Grace” Nichole joined us along with Ant’s and my new lover Carol Johnson Green (or C.J. as we call her).NICHOLE%20PAT%20CJ%20KARAOKE%201.jpg She came all the way from Connecticut to toast me. cjandpat.jpgAnd my good friend and Founder of Parish Tony Shellman came to celebrate with me (I sang at his wedding to my Nichole). ANT%20TONY%20PAT%20KARAOKE%201.jpgAnt and I wanted to rib him because he’s been promising us some Parish gear for months now and our respective schedules have not allowed us to make that transaction. Well, my Anthony found some in Brooklyn – pointedly, a shirt that he wore in Manila for our Beyonce photo-op – and everywhere he goes, this Parish shirt gets so much love ( www.parish-nation.com/ ). And though we know the owner, we don’t have luxury of saying that this piece is one that we got from him. Still, we’re ALWAYS happy to support Tony and the wonderful work he does (He founded and sold ENYCE and MECCA in his previous lives).bandant.jpg With that, WHERE ARE OUR FREEBIES??? SMILE! JUST KIDDING! We love you, Tony... and are forever proud of your continued achievements.ANT%20NICHOLE%20TONY%20TINA.jpg

TATAJULESPATFRANKIEANTERNME.jpgWho else was in the house? My Tata and her Jules were there. So sweet of them both to join us on a work night. Everyone loved Jules as he spoke some French – just to get the girls going. But not too much, ladies. He’s going home with Tata. Okay????? MARA%20AND%20FRIEND%20KARAOKE%201.jpgMy NBC Nightly News diva Mara Schiavocampo joined us with her husband Tommie. diazmara.jpgTwo of their friends, a couple visiting from San Francisco, came too. TOMMIE%20AND%20FRIEND%20KARAOKE%201.jpgMy Frankie was ready to sing a song or two. FRANKIE%20KARAOKE%201.jpgAnd my new friend Dr. Shirley Madhere ( www.thenewaesthete.com/ ) took some time off from the world of plastic surgery to come and enjoy our festive evening. And it was festive – through and through. PATMICHAELK%20KARAOKE%201.jpgI wanted to do a “LIVE!-FROM-THE-FRONT-ROW-style review/set-list of the night a la my Michael K. Watts (to whom I’m grateful for attending on the heels of a rough couple of weeks. Thanks Michael!):

But the show didn’t stop there! My creative, loving, amazing beau had a PART TWO planned at another karaoke spot on 32nd Street between 5th and Broadway. PLAYERS II is the location where we would toast in the actual day NOVEMBER 19TH… at the stroke of midnight. patatplayers2.jpgWith the staff’s support, Anthony had the room decked out with rose pedals, champagne (and chambord… for my favorite drink: KIR ROYALE), two cakes (one with a “3” (and three candles); the other with a “7” (and seven candles) – to represent my “37” years). champagneetc.jpgSome from earlier couldn’t segue to what Anthony deemed “the grown & sexy” leg of the evening. PAT%20KHALID%20KARAOKE%202.jpgBut others – like my Morehouse brothers Khalid and Mario – did come and join in the fun. MARIO%20MICHAEL%20KARAOKE%202.jpgAnd let me tell 'ya: it continued until we just had to call it a night.CJ%20NICHOLE%20ROBERT%20FRANKIE%20KARAOKE%202.jpg

Anthony did such a wonderful job on the parties... ANT%20PAT%20KARAOKE%202.jpgHe really made sure I - overall - felt the love.PAT%20KARAOKE%202.jpg And I did. Thank you so much to you, Ant, for all you do... and all you are. PAT%20ANT%20SING%20KARAOKE%202.jpg

Monday, the actual birthday, allowed me to regroup while Anthony went to work. We then met up to go to the Pavillion Theater in Brooklyn for our Beyonce concert on DVD (via the big screen). From there, we joined our buddy Marcos for his open mic night at Hacienda ( http://www.myspace.com/onemicnite ). RICO%20KARAOKE%202.jpgRico, who attended my party, is leaving NYC to go back to DC and finish up school at Howard University. (We wish him well!!!!). We wanted to shout him out. We also got to hear our friend Phil get his open-mic on. He performed John Legend’s “Ordinary People”. GREAT JOB! PHIL%20HACIENDA%20OPEN%20MIC%202.jpgAnt wants me up on the mic the next time. We’ll see. ANT%20PAT%20HACIENDA%20OPEN%20MIC.jpgClearly, Anthony and I are in the middle of a great, long song that is our LIFE and it’s all – to this point – a LOVELY SONG with melody, harmony, and some dissonance. But “HOW DO (WE) KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING?” Perhaps it’s the company we keep.

Before I close out, I want to shout out three folks:

* My friend Norm Lewis, who – once and whenever these strikes wrap – is currently in “The Little Mermaid” (I mentioned him in last week’s blog) was supposed to attend my set, but was under the weather. LESMIS%20006.jpgWith that, and for those of you looking for GIFT IDEAS, I want to tell you about one of his other projects. Norm has a couple of online gift shops (www.normsgiftshop.com) and (www.twofiveinc.com). And he's trying to get the word out there to people to let them know. He is offering a 15% discount to people who put in the coupon slot RILEY. If you do that, we can ALL BE A DIFFERENCE as Norm will make a donation in my name from a percentage of the proceeds to go to charity. BLACK FRIDAY is coming up. Double entendre, anyone?norm.jpg

* I've mentioned another buddy, Datari Turner to you folks. He's a TV producer/model/actor. His boo Itika is one of my dear friends (often referenced here in the blog) and she, Datari, Ant, and I had the luxury of spending time together and bonding - couple-to-couple - in Maui last year. Well, Datari continues to do great things with his life and career. This past weekend, he was featured in a starring role on BET.  datariitikapat.jpg(http://www.bet.com/OnTV/BETShows/blackbuster/blackbustermoviemikejonesanamericandream.htm?wbc_purpose=Basic&WBCMODE=PresentationUnpublished&Referrer=%7BF538EA1D-1840-40AB-81F4-05B7066C33A8%7D) datari2.jpg"American Dream" is a rapper’s real life rise to fame. Houston-born rapper Mike Jones made it despite the obvious odds and this film surveys that journey. Now, Mike Jones is one of the most recognizable voices in hip hop. Exploding onto the scene in 2005, his break-out single, “Still Tippin’,” sold an astonishing 1.5 million copies.datari1.jpg Datari plays a crooked music label owner and let’s just say he’s a great actor because Datari is one of the nicest guys I know. Great job, DATARI! CONGRATS!datari3.jpg

patrickandnoah'sarc.jpg*Patrik Ian Polk, creator of “Noah’s Arc”, says he would have LOVED to attend my BDAY set, but is hard at work on something that should please us all. There’s been doubt “… in the wake of the show’s "cancellation" or "hiatus"- whatever you wanna call it,” says Patrik. “A lot of peeps thought the movie announcement was just a smoke screen- and I will admit to having my own moments of doubt. But the proof is in the pudding, right?”. Yes, it is Patrik. And I guess it’s brewing because Patrik has been location scouting in Canada for the NOAH feature will which will begin production after the Christmas and New Year's holidays! And everybody is coming back! 12-4-2006-10.jpgSo, it’s on in 2008!!!! Can’t wait!newnoahs.jpg I'm a big fan and adore the cast. I too have had a chance to know Patrik over the last year and change. He's a great guy as well. I'll be talking about this project.

PAT%20AND%20ANT%20KARAOKE%202.jpgAnd now, Ant and I are looking to Thanksgiving which we will share together this year. The plan is to be with our Jason and Marqice (and many others) at their home in Queens. It should be lovely and though sometimes these approaching holidays can get me blue inside of what’s gone and here no more, I’m encouraged that I am inside of new experiences, new designs around my quality of life, and lots of love – starting with my Anthony and working its way all around our circles in this area and beyond. So, here’s to our… NEXT SONG!

"MANIFEST DESTINY: DESTINATION MANILA"

HOUSTONS.jpg

Tata, Jules, and Ern invited Ant and me to join them for their Houston’s Restaurant reunion (on the heels of Tata’s, Jules’, Ant’s, and my Houston’s Restaurant reunion from the week prior). Graciously, Ant and I caught wind of it, invited ourselves, and – VOILA! – it was our official “Bon Voyage” party as we knew that we were moments away from our trip to Manila to see Beyonce. beyonceinmanila.jpg

Afterwards, Ern – unbeknownst to him - threw one of his classic, “Bon Voyage” cocktail sets where we sipped rum cocktails while we caught up on the current season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” ( www.hbo.com/larrydavid/ ) and “Ugly Betty” (www.abc.go.com/primetime/uglybetty/index.html ) – this episode of which the Broadway musical “Wicked” is a thread (www.wickedthemusical.com/) coupled with a tease for "Posh" Beckham as one of Vanessa Williams' character Wilhemeina's Maid of Honor (We saw the recent episode upon our return. It's a hoot too). untitled.bmpAnd in preparation for our 20+ hour flight(s), Ern also updated our IPODS with some of the latest music – including our first listen to Britney Spears’ new collection of hot dance tracks. In fact, Anthony and I fell in love with the current single “Piece of Me” in which Britney rocks the line: “… sneak away to the Philippines… “. britney.jpgHow fitting given Ant and I were to embark on our oft-mentioned trip to The Philippines in the next couple of days. On the eve of our departure, Ant made sure he got us packed - so we could attend my friend Charles Wallace’s Harlem set which allowed us to see some good friends like Dwayne and Murphy. I know I’ve been buzzing for a few weeks about this big birthday trip my Anthony planned and purchased, but before I get us on the plane, let me remind you how “Manifest Destiny” or “Destination Manila” came to be. ANTANDPATMANILA2.jpgYou remember that Anthony and I have both done this life-work Momentum Education (www.momentumeducation.com). At a point in the program this past March, Ant declared some new and exciting things for his life – including traveling internationally for the first time. A trip to the Philippines (with me in tow) was on his mind as my friend/Godson’s father/regular car service driver Owen began sharing stories of his hometown Pampanga ( www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pampanga ), about 2 ½ hours outside of Manila. For a year or so now, he’s been telling us of his plans to build a school and how he wanted us to visit it at some point. Ant thought it would be cool to get involved. Well, according to Owen, plans are pending; however, Ant felt strongly we’d still get to the Philippines sooner than later. Fast forward to a moment outside of the Madison Square Garden, where Ant and I ran into Beyonce’s publicist Yvette Noel-Schure, Senior Vice President to SONY Urban Music. yvette-noel-schure-beyone-335a051707.jpgShe’s a dear friend and I’ve interviewed many of her clients over the years – from Jessica Simpson to Destiny’s Child. Most recently, she’d secured a tik for me to see Beyonce’s sold-out set in New York City. Unfortunately, Ant wasn’t able to see that show and we have a tradition of experiencing our divas together – like Janet (twice), Diana Ross (twice), and Ledisi (many times), etc. So, as we shared that detail with Yvette, she shared with us Beyonce’s plans for a world tour ( www.beyonce.com/ ). With passing words, she said “You guys should pack your bags to see her…” Ant asked “… is she going to the Philippines?” Yvette said “Yes, she is. Around November 7.” Ant said to me “… maybe we should do the Philippines after all [despite the delay in Owen’s school opening]…” He continued “… I’ve got money to give you a big and special birthday. Why don’t I use it to buy us plane tickets…” Well, it took him some convincing me, but after I realized the generous, bold gift that this was, I knew I had to make it happen. Then, all of a sudden, the universe began to reward us. Yvette secured the tix (Reminding us that it was the month of her birthday as well… and given this tour was promoting the BEYONCE BDAY project, there was lots of synergy, wouldn’t you say?). Ant bought the trip and – from there – Owen made sure we met Joseph, his dear friend who lives in Manila and was willing to host us for the week.OWENPATJOSEPHANT.jpg ANTSTARTOFTRIP.jpgFast forward a couple of months, Ant and I were on our way to Manila by way of Hong Kong by way of Chicago by way of Newark. PATSTARTOFTRIP.jpg

20 hours later… another screening of “Jackie’s Back” with Jenifer Lewis ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk2qG9jgKpE ), the beginning of reading “Inside The Actors Studio”s creator and host James Lipton’s “Inside Inside” ( www.bravotv.com/Inside_the_Actors_Studio ), we landed on our destination. ANTANDPATINHONGKONG.jpgAfter making it through customs, we transferred some of our dollars to pesos. We were offered the use of a security guard’s cell phone to call our host and sponsor Joseph, but then the guard asked for a tip. Having not determined which bill is what, Ant and I struggled over which bill to give the guy. In the end, he chose a bigger bill than I initially offered. JOSEPHANT.jpgThough we might have been scammed, Ant and I moved on to meet Joseph and the driver he had in place for us the whole week Abet.PATJOSEPH.jpgABETANDPAT.jpg We drove to our hotel Pan Pacific Manila ( www.panpacific.com/Manila/Overview.html ), a great choice of hotel in that they have butlers who accommodate your every need. MANILA.jpgThe hotel was relatively new (maybe a decade old) and had large rooms with great bathrooms and views. Ant and I were pleased. POOL.jpgBefore we got too settled in, Joseph took us to grab a bite and do some karaoke – what would soon become a recurring theme in our week. BONGJOSEPHANT.jpgOur first stop was Music21Plaza in Makati City ( www.music21plaza.com.ph/ ). We picked up Joseph’s friend Bong to join us. PATKARAOKENIGHT1.jpgOver wings and fries, Ant and I searched for our regular numbers from Diana and Janet’s respective repertoires, but found ourselves drawn to some of the rare fare in their books, including Dianne Reeves’ “Better Days” and Diana Ross’ “Come In From The Rain” (from her 1977 “Baby, It’s Me” project). From there, we segued back to the hotel for a good night’s sleep. Before our first night wrapped, we’d already heard Janet on one radio station (“Let’s Wait Awhile”) and Diana on another (“I’m Coming Out”). Our girls are truly international, but most in particular, I want to point out that Anthony and I – at first listen – love THE RADIO in Manila. It’s truly the best “today’s R&B and classic soul” without the limitations of looped rotations. On one station WDAV 89.1 ( www.wave891.fm/ ), we were just enamored of its playlist – all of our favorites from yesterday and today by the originals and some amazing Filipino artists like Thor ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrPYwczGmuE ). thor.bmp

JITNEYANDPAT.jpgOn Wednesday, we were up bright and early for breakfast. From there, Joseph and Abet picked us up – so we could see a bit of the city. ANOTHER%20JITNEY.jpgWe loved watching the various “jitney cabs” go by. They were so colorful and uniquely decorated. We noticed the degree to which Manila is poverty-stricken and yet – in close proximity – you see affluence and extensive commercial development. PATANTXMASTREE.jpgWe went to The Serenda Mall in Fort Bonifacio – right next to the open field where Beyonce was performing. We managed to secure four tickets to the show, which meant we could take Joseph and Bong.JOSEPHPATATMALL.jpg For lunch, we went to ZAO Vietnames Bistro where we all had something we liked. Ant had his foh soup. I had some good tenderloin that reminded me of home barbecue. PATANTJOSEPH.jpg Afterwards, we did some shopping – including “World of Feng Shui” where Ant and I bought some accents for our space-in-progress (www.wofs.com).ANTATFENGSHUI.jpg We both feel like we need some energy shifts in that area.PATATFENGSHUI.jpg Then, we walked and waited until it was time for us to connect to the Beyonce tour folks for our tickets and “Meet and Greet” passes. PATANDANTVIP.jpgYes! Arrangements had been made for us to have a photo-op with Miss Knowles before showtime. We met many dignitaries and their families as well as fans who flew in from as far as Australia. PATANTWITHTIX.jpgFirstly, Beyonce’s people, including our point person Jennette with Matthew Knowles’ management company Music World Entertainment ( www.musicworldentertainment.com/kidsrapradio.php ), were lovely, helpful, and most accommodating in getting Ant, our Manila-based guests Joseph and Bong, and me our tickets and as the added bonus: into the meet and greet. beyonce%20crop%20out.jpgIn fact, as we walked into have our moment with MISS BEYONCE, she remembered me immediately. She said “We’ve met before. You’ve interviewed me a few times.” She was right! But I didn’t want to presume she’d remember nor did I want to use one of my other tie-ins (“My nephew really is your biggest fan!”). Instead, I wanted to share with her the synergy of this trip that Anthony envisioned and is sharing with me. So, I hipped her to the BDAY theme of our trip... and she just LOVED that! On the heels of our quick-chat and photo-op, she asked where we were sitting. I alerted her (VIP LEFT - ROW DD). At Ant's prompting, she assured us she'd "snap for the kids" (a la ‘the gays’) after which she did four snaps in a circle as she watched us walk out of the room. (Ironically, though, "Get Me Bodied" was eliminated from the set-list along with "Speechless" and "Flaws and All"). During that brief moment, she was so present and warm. Not only did the superstar electricity come off of her, but her niceness and humility also shined brightly through.

Well, as we went to our seats – awaiting the big start of the show, Ant recognized Extra TV’s John Kelly ( extratv .warnerbros.com/ ). JOHNANT.jpgYou’ll recall, a family emergency prevented him from joining our other African American talent from entertainment magazine shows for the National Association of Black Journalists’ convention this past August in Vegas (www.nabj.org). Both surprised to see each other, I alerted him of my reason for being there as I introduced him to Anthony. He told us that he was dating one of Beyonce’s dancers and thought Manila was a good stop for him to catch up with her. We truly felt like it was a small world, shrinking – running into one of our stateside TV talent in the audience of this sold-out performance. JOHNKELLEYWITHPAT.jpg

And as she did here in New York City and New Jersey, a should-be exhausted Beyonce is still delivering an AMAZING show.BINCONCERT.jpg After she’d done hit-after-hit-after hit, she was ready to close but not before doing “Irreplaceable” and not before doing what she’s been doing on all of her tours – asking who is celebrating a birthday and – then – singing the “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” song. BINCONCERT2.jpgHere in Manila was no different as she asked the audience “WHO IS CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY OUT THERE…!!!???” Immediately she sees someone who came prepared with home-made poster and she acknowledges them by saying “I SEE YOU… BUT WHERE IS MY BOY FROM AMERICA?????!!!!!!!!”

We enthusiastically raised our hands - shouting and in shock that she was thinking of me. She looked in our direction as she’d been instructed from what I told her earlier at the “MEET-AND-GREET” and she said “… well, this is for you…” Though the moment quickly passed, it felt like suspended animation as those around us rooted us on while Miss Beyonce went on to serenade me (and the rest of the BDAY folks), but I’m the only one who got the pointed shout out. Tears streamed down my face as I found myself in part shock and part elation for this special moment in time that I got to share with Anthony by my side. WHAT A RUSH!!! PATANTBONG.jpg

After we finished the concert, we went to Greenbelt Shopping Center ( www.angelfire.com/oz/greenbelt3/ ) and had some crepes and coffee at Café Breton.PATJOSEPHANT.jpg Ant and I stayed up all night – just high from the night we’d just shared together with Beyonce. From Jackie Washington’s “Yield” in “Jackie’s Back” with Jenifer Lewis to Diana’s “Stop! In The Name of Love!” in karaoke to Beyonce’s “Green Light”. The synergies were working… overtime!!!!

OWENSFAMILY.jpgOn the following day (Thursday), our Owen (from the U-S) had coordinated with Joseph to take us to his hometown of Pamapanga to meet his family. PATINPAMPANGA.jpgWe thought it to be a quick HI and look at the open field on which the proposed school Owen is working on will be built. Well, after our long commute (it’s about two hours outside of Manila), we met some of the kindest, warmest, and most fun people you’d ever want to be around. When our car pulled up, we discovered a big karaoke machine set by itself and waiting for me.KARAOKE%20AND%20LORI.jpg I couldn’t believe Owen had delivered such a detail to his family. Well, they got the word loud and clear. This machine had a score. At my highest, I got a 96 and kept pushing for 100. No one else got one, but I wanted that 100. PATRICKMICHELLE.jpgI totally enjoyed performing for the troops - including Owen's father, sisters Lori and Michelle, and a host of others. PATATKARAOKE.jpgBut enjoyed more when the architect for the school Roger got up and did a song or when our driver Abet performed. ROGERPATRICK.jpgAnt got up and did a few songs – including his staple Madonna’s “Borderline” and we ate lots of native cuisine and drank lots of Coca-Cola (I love my bubbles!) as the sun soon set, but not before we shared time with Owen’s family at the fish pond.FISHPONDGROUP.jpg There will hopefully be more to share with you about Owen’s plans with his school that they intend to build for many of the underprivileged children in his hometown. The architect showed us the plans and they are hoping - with cooperation and as much support as they can muster - to open the first phase of this school on 8/8/08. But there's lots to be done. So, that date may shift. Once I get some more formal information, I'll be sure to forward to you as there may be a way you can help out there. GOODBYEPAMPANGA.jpg

Upon our return from Pampanga, we revisited Greenbelt Shopping Center with Joseph ( www.angelfire.com/oz/greenbelt3/ ).DSCF2063.JPG This time, we went to Kitchen and partook of some contemporary fare from the Filipino platter.KITCHEN.jpg It didn’t all agree with me, but I was adventurous and aimed to expand my palate as best I could. I didn’t always succeed. Additionally, we went back to the cafe that we liked so much. DERRICKBENET.jpgOn this night, we made it back to our hotel, but decided we wanted to find a spot for drinks and whatever it is that the locals do on Thursday night. “Mr. Valentine” ended up being our spot of choice. JOSEPHPATANT.jpgThere were male models – performing sometimes in hip hop hoodies and baggie pants and other times they were simply covered in leaves and moss. DSCF2074.JPGFrom there, a host whose name escapes me and his female singing guest Jada Ortega began to perform popular songs from instrumental tracks. Anthony felt I should let them hear my talent – so he arranged for me to come up and sing. He told them to give me one of four Diana Ross songs that were on one of the discs that they shared with us. PATSINGS2.jpgIn the end, they asked me to join them for a Chaka Khan number “Though the Fire”. Anthony thought they thought it would be more than I could handle (as they weren’t necessarily open to someone new joining their show and sharing their spotlight). Perhaps they thought my vocals would be a bit limp since Diana was my muse, but where they were mistaken is that I carry a strong baritone/2nd tenor and a sometimes off-the-charts “falsetto” (when in good form). So, Chaka is perfect fare for this chef. Gagging at my shift from calm baritone into “Chaka incarnate”, my contemporaries bowed down and the audience seemed to enjoy as well. We followed that standing ovation with “Baby, Come To Me” by James Ingram and Patti Austin. It was a great night. PATSINGS.jpg

On the following day, I got a lovely call from Loida Nicolas-Lewis Filipino-born, New York-based industrialist, philanthropist, socio-civic leader, motivational speaker, author, and lawyer who I’ve mentioned here in the blog before:

She married the late Reginald F. Lewis, who would go on to acquire Beatrice International in December 1987 in a $985 million leveraged buyout, created the largest African American company in the United States . His book “Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun?….How Reginald Lewis Created a Billion Dollar Business Empire” and she is arguably the richest Filipino in America. As I’ve mentioned before, I met her through my fabulous friend Carl Nelson whose allowed me to accompany him to her multi-million dollar estate in East Hampton as well as her beautiful 5th Avenue home (overlooking Central Park). loidalewis.jpgAnthony and I got invitations to dinner there as she gathered social troops to support her daughter Leslie Lewis-Sword (also referenced here in “A Day in The Life of Riley”) who wrote and stars in her own one-woman show “Miracle in Rwanda” ( www.miracleinrwanda.com/ ).Rwanda_IMAGE.jpg Her mother tells me Leslie has been nominated for a New York City theater award (for people of color). She’ll find out if she wins next Monday. Congrats, Leslie! Loida, Anthony, and I attempted a breakfast at Rockwell, but she needed to get to her Filipino hometown of Sorsogon (where she has built a school in her late husband’s name) and the window was too tight. But we look forward to more times and synergy. I was thrilled we got to chat. loidalewis2.jpg

From that call to a deep one-on-one with Anthony (reflecting honestly on the good, bad, and ugly of our relationship), we lifted ourselves up to join Joseph and Bong for some shopping at Greenhills ( www.greenhills.com.ph/ ), another huge mall in which the look for less is achievable in large order. PATANDANTSHOPPING.jpgLike H&M, “bench/” (www.benchTM.com) had cool, new, trendy clothes you’ll see soon enough. Same for “Memo” and “Oxygen” (www.goldenabc.com). We bought jewelry and other goods for our loved ones. We passed a church which set right between the flea market and the mall. We also had some Pho’ (noodles, broth, and meat) from Pho’-Hoa Noodle Soup Restaurant ( www.phohoa.com/ ).PATATMIC.jpg I too stumbled into another karaoke situation in which we walked into a CD store which was promoting its karaoke software. Josesph and Bong arranged with the store manager for me to sing a song or two. Little did I know that as I sang “Ben” (by Michael Jackson) and Diana’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” that folks walking in the mall would stop in their tracks for the performance as well as shoppers on levels two, three, and four – above me. And even after the two selections, they were screaming for more. While in the store, we also bought some CDs, including “Live in Concert – Mavin Gaye” – featuring his turn on the Diana/Marvin duet “Love Twins”. I convinced Ant to buy “Kinsey” ( www.imdb.com/title/tt0362269/ ), starring Liam Neeson who portrays the Indiana University professor and author whose research on human sexuality profoundly influenced social and cultural values in the United States and many other countries in the West which went through the sexual revolution starting in the 1960s. (Ant and I enjoyed this one on our way back to the States, but got a bigger kick that it was written and directed by our “Dreamgirls” guru Bill Condon). On this night, Ant and I got ourselves packed. After spending some quality time at our hotel, we decided to get out and stay up all night on this night as our flight would be bright and early on Saturday. We went to a spot called “Man’s Chest” before we did an encore performance at “Mr. Valentine”. PATVINCEANT.jpgFrom there, it was time for Joseph and Abet to get us to the airport. Our hearts are joyful and filled with gratitude for all that our hosts had to offer. From Owen to Joseph to Bong to Abet to Mrs. Lewis to Owen’s family in Pampanga, we are truly grateful and forever indebted. As Ant and I were having our one-on-one, we got a bit off track as we looked at some things that we both need to work on towards the improvement of our relationship. But we both got a little lovingly teary towards each other as we realized that we were both standing inside something really special – not just the relationship, but the “possibilities” that we both go for together… and how “if we hold on together” (in the words of Diana), “… our dreams will never die…”. ANTPATKISS.jpgThis trip to Manila to see Beyonce was a dream that didn’t die because we hung in there together and made it special, purposeful, and fun! But more than “me”, there was Anthony who had the vision to give me a big gift which – from trip to hotel – he sponsored. Moreover, we both got to consult with the early plans around what is going to be an important addition to the Pampanga community, the school for the underpriviliged. The results in this trip are exactly how he shows up at his best. JTINEY%20MARCEDES%20ANT%20AND%20PAT.jpgAnd though I love him however he shows up, I’m enlivened at this romantic one, who still hasn’t stopped. Tonight, he asked that I accompany him to the two spots at which he’s planning my stateside celebration to ensure that all he has prepared – location-wise, food-wise, etc. – is to my liking. Though one would think by now I’d be tired of karaoke, Ant has scheduled a night around this activity, but at our regular two spots: “one 17” and “players II”. He’s so good to me. ANTPATFISHPOND.jpg

As we approach our two-year anniversary, you’ll recall we met the opening night of “The Color Purple”. We’re now looking at seeing my friend Norm Lewis in his latest Broadway turn Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” ( disney.go.com/theatre/thelittlemermaid/index.html ). When he was doing “Les Miz”, he – along with actress Q – hosted Ant and me backstage. Norm, who says he reads the blog religiously, is excited to have us bask in our favorite passtime.LESMIS%20006.jpg

All of that said and duly noted, I couldn’t get to Hong Kong (which got us back to the states – Chicago first. Then, Newark) without receiving some grounding news to off-set the fantasy of our vacation.HONG%20KONG.jpg I got word that the aunt of one of my best friends since 7th grade, Latecia, had passed away. But “Inez” wasn’t just any aunt. She is the woman who can be credited for raising “Tish” for all the years that I knew her. Though Tish was a DC-based little girl being raised by her mother. At a point, it became in her (and her mother’s) best interest for her to come to Savannah and let “Auntee” (as we called her) take charge. If it weren’t for this destination (and the woman behind it), we (our Savannah posse) may never have known Tish. THANK GOD FOR AUNTEE… and GOD REST HER SOUL! tishintown.jpg

Ant and I got back Saturday night and spent most of Sunday in bed. But we did get to catch up with Ern a bit. On Sunday, we slept all day (as we were truly jet-lagged), but got to get out for a lovely dinner party Ant’s friend Robert threw at his lovely home in Brooklyn. ROBERTSPARTY.jpgWe enjoyed delicious food as we shared some of our Manila travels with the folks. PATANDANTATROBERTS.jpgAnt’s friend Marcos was there, reminding us of his open-mic night at Hacienda which takes place every Monday. Please check it out, if you find yourselves in need of an outlet. In addition to getting back to work , there too are a number of things happening stateside that I need to get updated on:

1. John Amos, who currently stars in the ABC comedy "Men in Trees" ( abc .go.com/primetime/menintrees/index ) is releasing an album of country music titled "We Were Hippies". Apparently, he’s been bonding with the legendary Cash family and they’ve convinced him that he’s got a voice for the genre.john%20amos.jpg Well, this is an I-LOVE-ALL –THINGS-GOOD-TIMES mention, but I’m not sure how I feel about this. You can determine for yourself: "We Were Hippies" is available for download via iTunes. For more info and to HEAR John's music, visit www.myspace.com/johnamoscountry

2. My friend Dorren Oliver is on the board of a theater company called Page 73 Productions. This month their new show "1001" premieres here in New York and runs until November 17 . An adaptation of "1001 Arabian Nights," with incredible direction by Ethan McSweeny, the show mixes the wordplay of Jorge Luis Borges with the satire of Monty Python -- while underscored by New York-based DJ Arisa's fusion of electronica and Middle Eastern music. Doreen calls the play a unique and thought-provoking multimedia event.

Variety calls it "A single, massive tale...which offers a wild and beautiful glimpse at the yarns that shape our lives." Feel free to check out the cool website: www.1001nyc.com. More details below. logo.jpg

3. My friend Marcia Pendelton (www.blacktheateronline.com) has hipped me to a hot new show that’s running at The Philadelphia Theater Company (www.thephiladelphiatheatercompany.com). It’s a Billy Porter production that he wrote and is directing. (Billy Porter is one of my favorite vocalists of all time). photo_1.jpgBEING ALIVE is a groundbreaking musical fusion which blends four decades of Stephen Sondheim's inventive music and lyrics with the passion and style of jazz, blues, soul, R & B, hip-hop and gospel. It is billed as a joyous celebration that features such songs as "Send In The Clowns," "Pretty Women," "Children Will Listen," and "Being Alive."

4. My friend Greg Dunmore from Detroit sent me this note: “You know how much I appreciate your God Blessed opinion! Please take a serious look at Ziam's live performance video and let me know your honest gut reaction...”. I say “DIFFERENT! EXCITING! SEXY! CUTTING EDGE!” What do you think? It’s Ziam's Liquid Silver at Detroit 's Dally in the Alley.CS_ZIAM_story3.jpg

5. An editor Kerry Soloway with whom I’ve worked on several pieces for television is recommending two new projects which will premiere in November. "Rolling Stone: Voice of Our Generation" in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Rolling Stone Magazine, has debuted on WLIW, channel 21.
( www.wliw.org/ ) as well as "Bowfire", which is described as “Riverdance” of fiddleplayers. It will debut on Saturday, November 24, at 7:30 PM on WLIW, channel 21. ( www.wliw.org/ ) They will both be broadcast nationally in December on Public Television. Please check your local PBS stations for the schedule. For more information about the productions, visit:

and

6. And when I didn’t think there was anymore news to tell, I ran into my good girlfriend in the name of the New York Association of Black Journalists Kimberly Allers and she is now making things happen via her “Mocha” brand (www.mochamanual.com). KIMBERLYALLERS.jpgIt started out with her “The Mocha Manual to a Fabulous Pregnancy” and now she’s working on a follow-up book and a new line of onesies and sexy “ TEES ” for pregnant women. We both had a late-night bite in mind and “The Waverly” ( 6th Avenue and Waverly) fit our respective bills. It’s always good to see Kimberly! I wish her and her two babies Kayla and Michael the best!

Next update will look at the birthday celebration and the week as it develops! I know this was a long read, if you made it to the end. But in the words of my Beyonce, “… a little sweat ain’t never hurt nobody…”! SMILE! beyonce%20crop%20out%202.jpg

"I THINK THAT A SONG SHOULD BE SOMETHING MORE THAN A BEAUTIFUL MELODY... "

I got to talk to my Audrey the other day. We caught up on our respective lives - she having just lost her loving mother and me adjusting to life under one roof in a committed relationship with my Anthony. After we spoke, she sent me a lovely note: "... I'm so happy for you both. It is a blessing when two soulmates find one another. Stay true to yourselves and never let go of your bliss... " PATANTKAROKE9.jpgThere are a multitude of things in this life of ours that we are figuring out, but Anthony and I are truly enjoying life's blessings with each day. Sometimes I think we're having too much fun (or - at least - too many spirits) as I look back on this week in particular and in anticipation of the approaching holidays - including my birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and next week's trip to the Philippines where Anthony is taking me to see Beyonce [for my birthday]. And truth be told, we do have many lovely times without a cocktail in hand. But in light of the season, I seem to be hard pressed to find many of those frames. SMILE! With that, I offer we are mindful and aware as we are being festive - grown-and-sexy style.

There's so much I want to reflect on - so here goes:

Ant and I have been calling joy forth as we aim for optimum health. Our hip hop dance class with Tweety is still the order of the Monday (www.alvinailey.org). Tweety took one of our recent class routines into the old-school era. We worked out (and it) to Johnny Kemp's "Just Got Paid".  As my high school classmates and I begin the work of planning our 20-year-reunion (for next year), it was quite the dance down memory lane as Tweety reminded the class that the old-school dances are much  more physical and demanding. Hip hop of today is more stylized and nuanced. I recalled after the plethora of high-school/college jams that I would feel like I had worked out - from the jump, prep, wop, reebok, etc. On top of one of these lessons, Anthony and I were approached by one of the Alvin Ailey folks who asked if we'd submit pictures of ourselves. Apparently, they want to consider us to be featured in future Alvin Ailey pamphlets and brochures that will promote Tweety's hip hop dance class. Cool, huh? Our routine as we wrap up our dance class is to get a nice dinner. Our recent standby where we saw Diddy most recently Serafina (www.serafinarestaurant.com) gives us good Italian and one of our new spots which Anthony found is another Thai Restaurant Chai (www.chai-restaurant.com) We had some wonderful egg dishes and really tasty dumplings. Ant has been working non-stop of late (following up each work day with his workout and whatever we have on the social calendar). With that, he still needs his wind-down time. salt%20pepa%20spin.jpgWhen we get home, we sometimes take in some of the new TV fare - like The Salt N Pepa Show: Featuring Sandra Denton and Cheryl James (www.vh1.com/shows/series/salt_n_pepa/splash.jhtml). And I must say: We are quite entertained. Talk about a walk down memory lane. I am feeling the transformation of "Salt" and continue to be intrigued at the degree to which I experience "Pepa" holding on to her youth (What do you think of the new nose?) and the past. Through each episode, however, I'm feeling the authenticity of their chemistry - now put to the test of a remix. Nothing says they have to get together and yet, through projects like this show, there's a way the "Salt 'n Pepa" brand can maintain itself without them recording and touring per se. Well, Spinderella is on the next episode and we can't wait (though we'll be en route to The Philippines when it runs. THANKS TIVO for holding the fort).

bobby_brown_afghan.jpgMy Audrey hipped me to another show I'm going to be looking for that plays to some of what I wrote about in a previous entry regarding Kodjoe and CMT... and his documentary on Blacks in Country music (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/9/19/waiting-in-the-wings-dreaming-along-the-way.html). Well, according to "Rolling Stone", Country Music Television (www.cmt.com/) is presenting seven non-country music sorta-celebrities, putting them in one Nashville house and attempting to convert them into honky-tonkin’ cowboys and cowgirls. "Gone Country" - hosted by Big & Rich’s John Rich -- will include American Idol’s Diana DeGarmo, popular gastro-bypass singer Carnie Wilson, Julio Igelsias Jr., and the actress who played Marcia on TV’s The Brady Bunch. But that's not it. Rounding out the cast is Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider, Whitney Houston’s "ex-original king of R&B Bobby Brown and, Mr. Thong himself, Sisqo. Over the course of six weeks, the contestants will undergo a series of musical and physical challenges in hopes of morphing them into Grand Ole Opry gold. At the end of the six-episode arc, Rich will declare the winner, who will be rewarded the opportunity to record and release a country song. We won't see this until January 2008, but guess what? TIVO is waiting for this season's pass. And so am I. BernadetteStanis.jpgIt seems the only missing player is perhaps Thelma from "Good Times". Well, have no fear, my sister just sent me this link and I found it to be a hoot (and what a fix for my "Good Times" jones): http://www.thelmaofgoodtimes.com/

Ant and I recently got the chance to join the New York Association of Black Journalists (www.nyabj.org) for a preview screening of Lions for Lambs (

www.lionsforlambsmovie.com/

), directed and featuring Robert Redford along with Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise, Derek Luke, and an impressive cast which takes an intimate look at what's going on in Iraq and here in the U-S as our media and the government goes. It was a great move for the movie company to select our ranks as worthy to pre-screen. lionsforlambs.gifAt the screening,  I ran into my buddy Raymonde Green who is hot on a scoop, which will be featured on UneQ Magazine's website November 18th (www.UNEQMagazine.com). It's Terry McMillan setting the record straight and revealing new details of her relationship with ex-husband Jonathan Plummer. terrymcmillan.jpgOn this night, as Raymonde, my Frankie, Ant, and I walked towards one of the black-gay-male spots for Thursdays, "The Ritz", Ant and I continued to get feedback on our new "American Chang" blazers (www.americanchang.com). PATANTRITZ1.jpgWe also sported our "American Chang's" for Halloween (and I wore mine to dinner with my Tata and Jules with whom we finally got a chance to catch up over dinner at Houston's last week. They are doing great... and Jules is still painting - www.julespainting.com . He came in 2nd place, by the way, for that art event we attended in New York for him (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/7/20/roots-the-next-generations-and-the-melody-lingers-on.html). Congrats! JULESTATAPATANTHOUSTON1.jpgThe night, by the way, where Ant and I wore our black-lace ruffled, printed purple, American Chang shirts (a la PRINCE), we double dated with Jason and Marqice before what was to be a "Purple Rain" house party in Brookllyn. ANTJASONPATMARQICEHALLOWEEN2.jpgOur good times with Jason and Marqice (coupled with crazy Halloween traffic) delayed us from making the BK set, but we had a lovely time just the same in the Village at Maracas (for dinner and drinks - http://www.maracasnyc.com/) followed by some pastries at Lafayette French Pastry Bakers Inc. and then followed by sushi at Fuma Yama Restaurant (www.funayamainc.com).  Shout out to R. Scott French (www.rscottfrench.com) who is the master designer behind "American Chang" and "R. Scott French". And our Meredith over there. You made us look good during some festive times this week.

PATATRITZ2.jpgSpeaking of "the look..." - in this case - "... for less", I should also shout out a moment that occurred this week while I was minding my own business. An Italian man came up to me - pointing out how handsome I was and how I would look great in one of his "Armani" jackets. As he put it, it is the "A. Collezioni - Reportage" line. He needed to get rid of them quickly as he was going to Italy and didn't want to deal with the taxes. He said he would give them to me or - better yet - take whatever cash I had in my pocket. I had $7 and no inkling to go to the ATM as Ant and I prepare for our trip. After a few nudges in that direction, he took said he would give them to me anyway. He still took the cash - $7 - and gave me not one, but THREE of these leather and suede jackets. As I prepared to write this entry from the perspective of the seller's pitch, I was going to say that each jacket was worth $2,500 and is real leather and suede. Well, the workmanship on the jackets (to this point) read well-done, but with some further research via ebay (reviews.ebay.com/How-to-Spot-a-Fake-Armani-Men-apos-s-Leather-Jacket_W0QQugidZ10000000002354776), I'm uncovering that they are "NOT" ARMANI. More like "ARMA"-NO!!!! Still, the first of the three, which I wore recently, has straight men (and all people) complimenting me --- like the guy Tariq at the Verizon Wireless store (where I needed to get the software to use my phone in Manila) who said "I don't normally step to guys like this, but that jacket looks great on you!". As they are short jackets, they are not my preferred silhouette if I were buying my own jacket. But you heard Tariq! It looks great on me. So, fake or not, I'll be sporting them. Only in New York City, huh?PATJASONMARQICERITZ2.jpg

At another Halloween Party, Ant and I attended last week, we were "trucker" (Ant) and "hood thug" (me).PATATHALLOWEENPARTY2.jpg It was a stretch as we stretched our existing wardrobes (sans purchasing "costumes") to attend our good friend Toyce's Harlem set. Regardless, everyone bought our looks. But Toyce and the gang were PLAYING TO WIN with their costumes. PATTOYCEHALLOWEENPARTY1.jpgAfterwards, we went to our friend Craig's set at Billie's Black, a cute little dive bar in Harlem (www.billiesblack.com/). Here, we celebrated with our other friend, also Craig, and his partner Biff. While there, we got a little "frat boy" and did shots for Craig's birthday.CRAIGANT2.jpg He and Ant did a round of something with "yager" in it. Look at their expression. CRAIGANT4.jpgI agreed to do a shot of "tequila (Patron)" and look at my expression. Lots of fun! PATCRAIG2.jpgAs fun goes, you've heard me often talk about VOYAGE and our friend Marcos who puts on great open-mic evenings there.PATCRAIG3.jpg He too has serviced "the gays" - hosting fun-filled nights at the restaurant for that demographic. We have enjoyed the menu - from the grits, scallops, and truffles to the garlic shrimp. And the rum punches are so good, I had to take my cousin Kejuanna and her husband Andrew there when they visited from Savannah. MARCOSLASTRUMPUNCH.jpgWell, Marcos has made his last rum punch at VOYAGE. It has closed down. Ant and I went to say BON VOYAGE and one final cheers to that great concoction he has mixed for us over the last year.MARCOSLASTRUMPUNCH3.jpg Marcos - however - isn't going anywherere. He's now hosting an open mic night in the East Village at Hacienda Lounge (www.myspace.com/OpenMicNite). And all artists are welcome - from spoken word/lyricists/acoustic... or as they say in the church: "... in your own way...". Marcos???? CONGRATS! We'll be seeing you soon!

Several of my friends are doing special things over the next week and change. I want to shout them all out here:

* My Spelman sister Karen Ceesay, who is Atlanta-based, is taking her show "Karen Ceesay - SUPASTAR!!!" to Los Angeles. Showtimes are this weekend at The Sherry Theater in North Hollywood (www.myspace.com/KarenCeesay). karen_ceesay.jpgShe bring her unique brand of high-energy sketch comedy & interactive improv to the stage - tackling diverse topics as race, culture & cooking in ways guaranteed to make you laugh, and think. If you miss Dave Chapelle…if you think Tracey Ullman’s a genius…if you love “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, then you have to see “Karen Ceesay – SUPASTAR!!!” MY FRIEND!

* Another of my buddies GIL ROBERTSON (www.robertsontreatment.com/) has a client Dr. Rani Whitfield, aka "The Hip Hop Doc" (who I've written about in previous blog entries). Well, he is going to soon be on BET's special What You Know 'Bout That Sex Quiz Show' - talking about HIV and other STDs. CLICK ON: (www.bet.com/rapitup) and (www.h2doc.com) for more information. THAT'S WHAT'S UP, DOC!!!!!!!!!hip%20hop%20doc2.jpg

* My dear and old friend Renee Warren, who is founder and at the helm of Noelle-Elaine Media Consultants (www.noelle-elaine.com/) will be hosting one of her clients in Atlanta in the next couple of weeks. She reached out to me to see if I could help her secure an Atlanta-based host to present Donald Trump's "Apprentice" Dr. Randal Pinkett, who is celebrating the release of his book "Campus CEO: The Student Entrepreneur's Guide to Launching a Multi-million Dollar Business". (http://www.randalpinkett.com/).pinkett3.jpg I hoped to be able to share "FIVE POINTS" with you from Dr. Pinkett (get it, my ATLANTA folks????). But at BLOG time, I'm not in receipt of his responses. Perhaps upon my return from the Philippines, I can share them with you.

* My friend Scott is coming to town with his boss Sheryl Lee Ralph who will be presenting her HIV/AIDS Production "Sometimes I Cry" (www.sometimesicry.org/) at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx. It's being put on by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Bronx Alumnae Chapter.sometimes.jpg It's a day trip for them. And Ant and I aren't sure we'll get to see Scott or the show as we prep for our trip. But I still wanted to shout them out and if you are interested in going (Free Admission and you can get tested from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm), call 646-291-8921.

* And as you recall, the aforementioned Scott was able to book the always-aforementioned Ledisi (www.ledisi.com/) for Sheryl Lee Ralphs "Divas: Simply Singing" benefit last month (www.divassimplysinging.com/). Well, according to my industry buddy Jawn Murray (www.myspace.com/JawnMurray) who is making us all proud as he is entertainment reporter for "The Tom Joyner Morning Show" (BAW: Tom Joyner Morning Show - "If You Missed It") and is an able and animated contributor to Star Jones' Court TV show (www.courttv.com/onair/shows/star_jones/index.html ), his colleague and friend Karu Daniels (also a gracious and supportive friend of mine) spearheaded AOL Black Voices’ most recent installment of “The Bridge,” a live concert performance that brings two artists of two generations together for an amazing showcase of soul.ChakaPatrick3.jpg  In this case, "The Bridge" features the vocal dynamos Chaka Khan and our Ledisi.

* And best friend in my mind: MISS DIANA ROSS is letting them have it these days! purple%20reign.jpgShe appeared and headlined at a Tiffany & Co. function last week (www.Tiffany.com) - sporting a beautiful, form-fitting purple dress that reminds everyone that she "... ain't been licked!!!!". This, just in time for her west coast tour which she launched last night to a sold-out audience in San Diego (www.dianaross.com). From sources, she's in fine form and Santa Rosa, Oakland, Phoenix, Santa Inez, Nevada, Highland, Indio, and Los Angeles have quite a show to look forward to. And then, after Thanksgiving, there is The Kennedy Center Honors (www.kennedy-center.org/programs/specialevents/honors/). GO D!!!!! "If you need me, call me... "

So, how often am I referencing my friend Theo??? A lot, right? Well, Theo strikes again with one of his brilliant ideas. He wants me to consider a BLOG entry that would include - his words -  the "10 Hottest Black Gay Couples".  As he and I were sharing a drink (and some ox-tails) at our Chelsea watering hole "Maroon's" (www.maroonsnyc.com), he came up with brainchild. PATANTHOUSTON1.jpgHe said that - of course - Anthony and I would be on the list (but if perhaps Ant and I are putting the list together, we'd waive a slot for integrity's sake). JASONMARQICERITZ1.jpgThough Theo had not met Jason and Marqice (until later last night, after we talked about this), he said they should be in it as he reads of them often on this blog. We mentioned Nathan Hale Williams and Keith Boykin. We ran into my good friend Kiwan (whose kicking butt at Omega Watch company (www.omegawatches.com )) and he is in a promising relationship. PATKIWAN1.jpgWe thought about our Theo (no relation to aforementioned Theo) and Trevor.THEO%20AND%20TREVOR.jpg It's an interesting prospect - one that, of course, "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilties" is about, but I also wonder if we'd be able to get a comprehensive, cooperative list of folks - in part because the relationships in our community don't 'always' last (and perhaps that's not important). And I'm sure there are more relationships than there are people willing to share openly their status. So, I share the "notion" with you for now. Perhaps you can let me know your thoughts and/or if you know of any "great couples" out there. (Oh! Real quick! I just want to shout out DOUBLE L - as in LLOYD - a brother who has some roots in the Philippines but works at Maroon's as a bartender. As I shared Ant's and my plans, I found out not only where his people are from, but that he is a DJ who specializes in Reggae, Dancehall, Soca, and Hip Hop. If you're on the market, check him out: www.myspace.com/g13doublel).

Meanwhile, as I left Theo, Marqice, and Jason to go and meet my Anthony at a new karaoke spot that he wanted me to see (near a Momentum dinner he hosted earlier in the evening - www.momentumeducation.com). Little did I know that upon my arrival to "Players II" Karaoke on 32nd Street, we were getting ready to party. KARAOKE.jpgOne of the managers Yunni gave Ant the info he needed to see if this might be a place we do my stateside birthday celebration. PATANTKARAOKE2.jpgUnfortunately, they only have one Diana Ross song in their collection, which means this may not work (but Yunni is checking with the bosses - wink, wink - to see if they can fix that). Meanwhile, Yunni created a scene in which Ant and I felt we were getting a preliminary view of how hospitable and enjoyable our Philippines trip will be (though these folks are Korean).YUNNIANDFRIENDKARAOKE2.jpg She popped that champagne for us, provided us with "sweet potato cake", lit candles, and serenaded us as we serenaded each other.PATANTKARAOKE3.jpg It felt kinda' like a wedding reception (with guests we didn't know, but grew to like in the course of the evening)... and we were the groom and groom. PATANTKARAOKE5.jpgWhat started out as Ant's exploratory into another karaoke venue that he wanted me to check out for sure turned into a party for two (with Yunni, her employees, and friends... joining us for the fun). PATANTKARAOKE4.jpgWe may or may not use "Players II" for the birthday extravaganza, but we'll for sure visit them again.

Meanwhile, we've gotta pack... See you when we get back from The Philippines! Please PRAY for a joyous trip and our safe return!!!!ANTPATKARAOKE1.jpg

"... MAKING A WAVE (or is it "way"?) WHEN YOU CAN..."

It is a basic, drab Tuesday - one in which I don't feel like doing the bills which - in part - are overdue as I've just returned from an extended assignment that kept me away and too busy and now-too-worn out to get them done. I don't feel like running the errands I needed to run - including sending some funds to my big brother down in Georgia and picking up Ant's and my dry cleaning - before my next dispatch. I don't feel like straightening up the place - so Ant can continue the work of transforming our space from 'apartment' to 'home'.

goodtimes.jpgMy day was reading like an episode of "Good Times", which we all know is one of my all-time favorites. (www.museum.tv/archives/etv/G/htmlG/goodtimes/goodtimes.htm). So much so, I feel like I am an Evans. I didn't grow up in the projects nor poor, but my childhood family unit (in the '70s) was comprised of a mother, father, two boys (including me), and a girl. The kid order was switched up a bit, but "the smartest" (in the sitcom world [READ: MICHAEL]) was "the smartest" (in reality [READ: ME]), if I don't say so myself. Also, I frustrated my friend Carl one time a couple of years ago as he called me just as I'd finished watching the episode in which they all find out that James is dead. This occured some months after I'd lost someone really close. When I picked up the phone crying, Carl thought "What now?" and - with loving concern - wanted to know what was wrong and if he needed to come over immediately. I told him, choking back the rest of the tears, "... James is dead!". He said ".. who?..". I said "... James Evans is dead...". Once Carl processed - in his mind - all of my friends and family as he sat on the phone with me - perplexed, he realized he didn't know a James in my life. But then, as he pondered the last name, he realized I must have been watching "Good Times". Though the tears were real (from my having viewed that episode at least 100 times), he didn't take too kindly to being swept up in my - as he'd call it - "foolishness". He - to this day - won't let me forget that moment. But I digress...

"...Not getting hassled, not getting hustled.
Keepin' your head above water,
Making a wave when you can..."

ENTER my "Amazing Grace" Nichole, who is driving up the New Jersey Turnpike from her weekend in D.C. with her sister Tori and her family (Shout out to her nephew Cameron for his high school touchdown and, according to his aunt, signaling her once achieved!). She mentions that she and her co-worker and good girlfriend Carol (CJ we call her...) will be attending an art opening and reception for noted artist Ernie Barnes. Now, my basic, drab Tuesday is suddenly inspired because my man Anthony is an artist (and has done some awesome work in Denver that's received rave reviews - like his sculptor "Unwanted Hair" - a three-piece body of conceptual art consisting of a sculpture made of human hair, a donation bank, and a book of photographs with creative commentary from fellow artists comes together to create a glaring statement about racism in the 21st century. Conceptually, this piece of work is rooted in the fact that, last year a donation of African American locked hair was deemed "inappropriate", and rejected by the national non-profit cancer organization, "Locks of Love". So, in short, for the many who love to touch "our" hair, you must make a donation.). CA8985CZ.jpgAnthony also is a connoisseur and was just talking to me about the "expressionism" of Ernie's work the day prior. This because Anthony is currently working on some pieces that will use this technique. (Yes! He is multi-talented and we look forward to sharing some of his NEW, great pieces with you very soon. He's hard at work - sketching and stretching canvases, etc.). ANT%20THE%20ARTIST.jpgOf course, I - not the connoisseur - replied (in my own pop culture junkie's voice): "... Isn't that the guy whose work is on 'Good Times' and who is the alter-ego for J.J. EVANS?" "YES", Ant replies - rolling his eyes at the simple and country man he calls his "partner". good%20times.jpgBut I did have another frame of reference --- of course from the pop culture spectrum: "His work is also seen on Marvin Gaye's 'I Want You' album. That title track was written by Diana Ross' brother T-Boy who was killed in 1998 and Diana remade the tune on her current project "I Love You" [www.dianaross.com/]." That piece, I remembered (through all the trivia), was called "Sugar Shack". Anthony, more academically and pointedly, let me know that in addition to the aforementioned, Ernie Barnes is like "Norman Rockwell with soul". Curiously, I got that. (I'm no dummy, but not the smartest whip when it comes to fine art either).

Well, back on track with Nichole and CJ's plans to join Mr. Barnes as he planned to showcase 20 of his works under the title "Ernie Barnes: His Art and Inspiration" in the Time Warner Center's Great Room (www.theshopsatcolumbuscircle.com/), I knew that Ant and I should forego our yoga plans to attend. Since Nichole didn't have the info and I didn't dare wait on her to get it, I googled; called Ernie's 1-800 number via his website; those folks gave me his assistant's number; and - ten minutes later - Ant and I were all good to attend.

PATRICK%20ERNIE%20ANT.jpgUpon our arrival, I uncovered that Ernie Barnes is more than JJ's alter-ego on "Good Times". He is a retired NFL player, who once played for the Colts, Chargers and the Broncos... and that stat was a part of why we were all gathered. ERNIE%20ANT.jpgThis was a tribute in addition to a viewing (which runs through October 29... so PLEASE GO CATCH IT). The core of the Tribute is an exhibition of twenty of Barnes’ most recent artworks, entitled "Liberating Humanity from Within", in which Barnes seeks to portray moments of transcendence in everyday life. A full-color catalog with an essay by William A. Fagaly of the New Orleans Museum of Art accompanied the exhibition. inner%20strength.jpgOne piece, in particular, that spoke to me: "An Inner Strength". It reminded "me" of "me" - "a little boy from the South trying to stay strong despite the cracks in his life - from circumstance to society to his soul". At least, that's what I got out of it... and I truly am learning to appreciate ART and Anthony is mentoring me towards our household being one where we will collect and invest in art -- African American art in particular.PATRICK%20PAINTING.jpgANT%20WITH%20PAINTING.jpg

Learning that Ernie has focused his last 30 years on his impressive artistic talent full-time (www.erniebarnes.com) truly made this a lesson for me. Moreover, Ernie has painted some amazing work -- deemed Neo-Mannerist -- that has truly inspired many, including those in attendance. ERNIE%20AUDREY%20MELBA.jpgI was really excited to see Miss Melba Moore there. I recently saw her perform at my friend Scott Nevins' SPLASH (www.scottnevins.com/) set (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/9/11/i-look-back-on-all-those-good-times.html). And I did interview her some years ago. PATRICK%20MELBA%201.jpgBut here, I got to get my picture and let her know how much I have loved her over the years - from "Purlie" to "Other Side of the Rainbow" to "Falling" to "Read My Lips" to her current release:  "Live in Concert" (http://www.amazon.com/Melba-Moore-Live-Concert/dp/B000PMLIWC). PATRICK%20MELBA%202.jpgShe was so gracious and allowed Ant and me to have our way with her. Pictures together. Pictures apart. Pictures with Ernie's art in the middle. Thank you, MISS MOORE!!!!MELBA%20ANT%202.jpg

Then, there was Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Elinor Tatum (who is always so gracious and sweet), the legendary Audrey Smaltz (www.groundcrew.net/) - renowned fashionista and fashion show coordinator, whose work set the foundation for Ebony Fashion Fair; and MISS ESSENCE: Susan Taylor (who I feel annointed Ant's and my relationship after I introduced her to Anthony. She commented "What good looking brothers together and in love!!!" WOW! Susan Taylor said that to me!). REGGIE%20PATRICK.jpgAmong many others - NFL Great Reggie Williams with whom I had a chance to bond when I hosted the "Disney Dreamer's Academy" event at NABJ's convention (www.nabj.org) in Las Vegas (www.steveharvey.com/disneysdreamersacademy/). DISNEYEVENT5.jpgWe also ran into Ant's and my new friend Kitt, who works for Anderson Cooper at CNN (www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/anderson.cooper.360/). She was just getting off work (New York CNN is in the Time Warner Center as well) and she graciously posed with us. PAT%20KITT.jpg But in this sea of beautiful, Black people --- the gorgeous art included (of course, there were lovely speckles of white on the canvas and in the room) --- there was one "white" man who really got me excited. I'd never met him and have always admired his work. I even find him to be a muse for what I aim to do at my optimum in this business - a TV personality with natural wit and charm who gets to talk about his life... interview some celebs... have fun with some info-taining segments... and sing a bit when it fits the schedule (on stage and CD)... who has a loving and supportive partner and family. It was REGIS PHILBIN!!! And though I can get a little shy about approaching a celebrity with whom I have no pointed business (especially my idols), I made it my business to say HI to REGIS! He was friendly and jokingly menacing --- all in one breath. When I told him a bit about me - professionally, he offered that he might want to steal me to work for his show (bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/regisandkelly/noflash.html). PATRICK%20REGIS.jpg

As we walked into the Stone Rose Lounge on the 4th Floor, we admired the work -- flowers and displays -- of STEM LIFE (by Stephen Bruce Design). One of the partners Melissa Bushell came up to make sure I recognized. (www.stephenbrucedesign.com or www.hudsonvalleyweddings.com). Also, I excitedly caught a glimpse of one of my favorite soul artists from 'the old school': BILL WITHERS (www.billwithersmusic.com/). CJ%20AND%20BILL%20WITHERS.jpgYou remember. "Lean on Me"; "Grandma's Hands"; "Ain't No Sunshine"; "Just The Two of Us"; and "Lovely Day", one of two songs my Miss Ross re-made on the aforementioned album "I Love You" (www.dianaross.com). The other is "Same Love That Made Me Laugh" from her 1977 project "Baby, It's Me" - one of my favorites. CHECK OUT "YOU TUBE" TO HEAR THEM ALL! I even met two young men Alex Vlack (www.latenightandweekends.com) and Damani Baker (www.prestinfilms.com) - both of whom have been filming a documentary on Mr. Withers and his special life that most might think has experienced some fall from grace, but from their sharings (without giving anything away), this film will be a front-row seat into the heart and soul of a man who grew up in Slab Fork, West Virginia in 1938 and how the soundtrack this "Black man in America" provided the world often reflected what was going on in our own life and times. Look for it next year sometime, if not 2009. PATRICK%20AND%20BILL%20WITHERS.jpgThe festival circuit may first be its home, but there are also talks with premium cable outlets. Stay tuned... and know I'll share what they share here. In addition to reminding the guys that Miss Ross covered some Bill Withers' tunes, I offered that Withers' "Use Me" was spun-off into a Gospel tune that my Dad used to play (via his huge album collection) all the time on Sunday mornings and we'd sing along. I've got to get the name of that gospel group (perhaps a quartet - Dad's favorite genre within Gospel) and share it with them. They were floored!!!! (And after press time, I spoke to my Dad who was able to find this record on the foundation of my "memory". I remembered an album with a man and some women (two or three) in peach/pink, dowman-sleeved caftans. He said he'd flip through his thousands and thousands of albums for me -- an artform I adopted genetically from my father -- and call me back. 15 minutes later, Dad called back, saying "Your memory is spot on - photographic even. I'm looking at a man in a pink suit with two women to each side of him in the very dresses you described. The name of the group is "Bill Moss and the Celestials". The name of the album is "I Don't Want To Do Wrong" (Jewel - LPS - 0112). The track you mention is on SIDE 1, #3 and it's title is "Keep on Using Me ('Til You Use Me Up)" from 1975". Now, the "autistic" Patrick can rest assured that his childlhood memory was not playing tricks on him. I spent lots of time studying Dad's albums - the artwork, lyrics, fonts, liner notes, etc. And though I didn't always know the artists, I always enjoyed looking at the albums. Little did I know those memories are still with me. Given that, it's no wonder "childhood traumas" and "breaks in belonging" linger and stick with us through and to adulthood, huh?)

NICHOEL%20PAT%20CJ%20ANT.jpgAfter this brilliant night, the girls, Ant, and I decided to enjoy a light meal - alfresco (since the night was so mild and spring-like) - at Anthony's and my favorite Dream Hotel's Serafina (http://www.serafinarestaurant.com/). Of course, since we were dining next to the Bad Boy Worldwide Headquarters (www.badboyonline.com/), it's no surprise that we ran into Mr. Sean "Diddy" Combs himself. He was on the sidewalk with a host of employees. Though a bodyguard maintained his post -- dissuading me from saying "Hi", Mr. Combs caught my eye and came over to speak to my folks and me. (I've interviewed him several times over the years and he's always been great to me). PAT%20AND%20DIDDY.jpgAfter we caught up and I introduced him to everyone, we were prepared to gracefully exit the zone of whatever he put on pause to say HI. But before we could walk off, he signaled someone to give us his fragrance - "The men's fragrance and the women's fragrance...". Soon, his folks were distributing "UNFORGIVABLE MAN" and "UNFORGIVABLE WOMAN" (www.seanjohnfragrances.com/). ONLY IN NEW YORK CITY, I tell you!!!DIDDY%20ANT.jpg When I exclaimed those very words, after we walked off from Diddy, Ant retorted "... only with Patrick Riley!!!". Truth be told, you couldn't have met four less star-struck people than us (on one hand as we've all been in the business and up-front-and-personal with a lot of the greats). Still, on that other hand, it never ceases to thrill me when the household likes of Diddy or - even Susan Taylor from ESSENCE - approach this "little Black boy from Savannah, Georgia" with enthusiasm for seeing me or when they call my name or when they are not only kind to me but to my people. It's humbling and quite the - as my Audrey would say - 'spa treatment for the ego', but also a testament to 'who I am being' in the world. It's feedback that just happens to come from some folks we all know a bit more because of what they do in the mass media.

ANT%20NICH%20CJ%20KARAOKE.jpgWhat was already a plentiful night just kept turning out more revelations: In the spirit of a good lyric, CJ felt we should honor our original plans to cap the night off with some karaoke (especially since this new spot we wanted to try was only a half-block away - Japas 55). NICHOLE%20CJ%20PAT%202.jpgNot our regular spot, but with C.J. in the mix, we called joy forth for about one hour. From Diana's "The Boss" to Janet's "Love You For A Little While", we experienced some new songs sprinkled with old songs (that had different videos and lyrical instructions than the other location). One round of saki down and we decided to call it a night - a wonderful night, a night that one can only have in New York City!!!!! A night of:

Good Times.
Any time you meet a payment.
Good Times.
Any time you need a friend.
Good Times.
Any time you're out from under.

Not getting hassled, not getting hustled.
Keepin' your head above water,
Making a wave when you can.

Temporary lay offs.
Good Times.
Easy credit rip offs.
Good Times.
Scratchin' and surviving.
Good Times.
Hangin in a chow line
Good Times.
Ain't we lucky we got 'em
Good Times.

"... EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNING... "

I spent seven days in Chicago last week. I was there on an assignment that required much of my time. Moreover, my Ti-Ti was out-of-town saying "Goodbye" to her 'Big Daddy' (grandfather) - one of the people who raised her. My prayers are with you, Miss Ti-Ti. With all of that, I didn't get the chance to hang out extensively (like times before when I'm in Chi-town to work hard and play hard).EDPATVINCECARL.jpg I did - however - get one night with my Chicago Carl and Vince (whose loving partner Earl I've gotten to know in the last few months as he's doing wardrobe for the now-New-York-City-based Tyra). Also, my best friend from Morehouse Eddie joined us. We did some 'Mexican cuisine' and margaritas at Adobo Grill (www.adobogrill.com). DELICIOUS!!!! From there, we weren't able to get into a "Why Did I Get Married?" screening for Eddie to see (www.whydidigetmarriedthemovie.com). So, instead we went to "M" Lounge (www.mloungechicago.com/) for a drink before Chicago Carl and I skipped out for a couple of hours of dancing hip-hop at "The Prop House" (http://chicago.metromix.com/bars-and-clubs/dance_club/prop-house-irving-park-avondale/138119/content). PATED.jpgOn Saturday night, however, Eddie and I did get the chance to contribute to the opening week box office of "Why Did I Get Married?" which Anthony and I'd seen the week prior in New York City at a screening with Tyler Perry, Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, and others. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/10/11/what-has-pop-culture-done-for-me-lately.html). patandjanet.jpgBut before, we enjoyed Spanish tappas, paella, and sangria at Cafe Babareeba (www.cafebabareeba.com). SO GOOD!!! Eddie enjoyed Tyler Perry's movie and Anthony and I went to see it with our friend Ern the other night - making #3. We're done until DVD time, but enjoyed it each time we got to experience the magic of that ensemble on the big screen. I was really happy to get some easy moments during my assignment as it demanded much from me. With that, I did have the chance to meet some great folks - on the clock and off - so it was all worth the trip.

antandmario.jpgWhile I was away, my friend Diaz had a birthday celebration for his partner Kareem. "Bamboo 52" was the locale (www.bamboo52nyc.com). Anthony was able to hold it down for us both along with our buddies Mario, Derrick, et al. Ant enjoyed the spot so much, he took me there last night for dinner, after we went to see Miss Tamyra Gray in "Rent" on Broadway (www.siteforrent.com/). PATANDANTATBAMBOO.jpgOn this lazy Sunday, which neither of us have had in a minute, we simply shared the day with each other at home before deciding (in the 11th hour) to go see Tamyra in "Rent". tamyra%20gray.jpgShe gives a different spin on "Mimi" (as does the rest of the cast on its respective portrayals) and yet Tamyra's vocals could NOT be denied. I've never heard her in better voice. She was resplendent!!! Afterwards, we wanted to say HI (You know I LOVE my "American Idol-ers"), but we would find out that she had an early call for a film she's shooting here in the city (and had to go).  PATATRENT3.jpgWe chatted up a few of the other cast members and went about taking solo pix before heading up Broadway for "The Color Purple" - thinking we could get a "Fantasia" photo-op, but she didn't come out that door (We did see "Shug" - Elizabeth Withers-Mendes). Then, en route to  "Bamboo 52", we were reminded that we still need to see Tevin Campbell in "Hairspray" (www.hairspraythemusical.com/). (We stopped and took a picture of the show's mural.) TEVIN.jpgWe also need to see "Spring Awakenings" (www.springawakening.com). ANTHONYATBAMBOO.jpgWell, anyway, back to "Bamboo 52", we enjoyed great sushi and a volcano bowl - filled with juice and rums (which we shared). PATRICKATBAMBOO.jpgWe capped off the night with a little saki and karaoke at 'the spot' (http://www.karaoke17.com).

jd%20book.jpgAnthony and I enjoy ourselves so much when we're together, we have to challenge each other to go out and have a good time when either of us are not around. Like the aforementioned birthday party, Ant got a bonus Janet Jackson moment when he attended her man J.D.s booksigning at Hue-Man Bookstore in Harlem (www.huemanbookstore.com/). His project "Young, Rich, and Dangerous: The Making of a Music Mogul" (Young, Rich, And Dangerous: The Making Of A Music Mogul) was celebrated with Janet and a host of fans in tow. Anthony went by to get his book signed and got a glimpse of Janet and her and J.D.s publicist Patti Webster. She's always so kind to us and has been for many years. CONGRATS to Patti and her clients J.D. for his book and JANET for her hit film.

On Thursday, upon my return from Chicago, Marqice and I enjoyed dinner and drinks at Dallas BBQ (www.bbqnyc.com) while our guys Ant and Jason attended a panel in town. MARQICE.jpgAfter the respective criss-cross pairings wrapped, we all got together for a night-cap at "The Ritz". PATANTJASONMARQICE.jpg

Perhaps this is a good time for comebacks. Troubled singer Whitney Houston shocked fans (in a good way, for once...) by making a public appearance at the Swarovski Fashion Rocks event in London last Thursday. Bobbi Kristina escorted her. WhitneySwarovski04.jpgShe appeared onstage in a white Valentino dress (hear that, Tyler and Janet?) at the Royal Albert Hall gig, introducing a performance by British girl group Sugababes. Houston -- who had flown in from New York but had been "hidden" in a hotel in the U-K -- looked great and seemed on point (even hitting a little note). Hopefully this is a hint of something awesome to come. Check it out for yourself: http://youtube.com/watch?v=vSBlC3xcwRo

Yes! It was a good week... and I'm "... easy like Sunday morning...".
