PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!
Patrick L. Riley

"WHAT HAS (POP CULTURE) DONE FOR ME LATELY?"

RedCarpet.jpgWell, the old adage is the same: "First weekends are critical to the success of a black film in Hollywood!!!". So, I'll hopefully inspire you to go out and see Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?" (WhyDidIGetMarriedTheMovie.com). JANET%20ET%20AL%20069.jpgThough Anthony, some friends, and I got the chance to check out an intimate, A-list screening Tuesday night at New York City's Bryant Park Hotel Cellar and Screening Room (www.bryantparkhotel.com), I will go see it again tomorrow night here in Chicago (where I've been since Wednesday morning) to ensure my contribution to the first-weekend box office tally (Plus, I have some lines to memorize. I LOVE to memorize lines and scenes from movies.
Can you say "Mahogany" or "Mommie Dearest" or "Jackie's Back"????). For our Hollywood (East) set, I was able to not only secure entry for my Anthony (one of Janet Jackson's biggest fans) and me, but also best friends Michael K. Watts (another of Janet's biggest fans) and socialite-with-the-most-each-and-every-night Carl Nelson. The hope was that Miss Jackson would be there... and she was.patandjanet.jpg I've been in close quarters with her before - even interviewing her a couple of years ago, but I finally got a photo opportunity with her. Most importantly, Anthony got his. antandjanet.jpgWe're so into our divas (He... Janet; Me... Diana) that I really wanted this moment to happen for him. And it did. ant%20and%20janet.jpg(I've still not gotten my Diana moment nor my moment with Beyonce, who we'll see in the Philippines next month when Ant takes me to her Manila show -- all for my November 19th B-DAY).patrick%20and%20ant.jpg I should add that Miss Janet does an impressive turn as a psychologist in the film. She channels Dr. Robin, who too was in attendance at the screening.patandmovie.jpgThe director, playwright, co-star, jack of all trades, and master of many Tyler Perry, too, was in the house and received me warmly.patandtyler.jpg I've had the opportunity to interview him on a handful of occasions and I was excited that he was excited to see me at the event. Once he saw that I was there, he moved right over and greeted me, took the time to meet my friends, and continued to be hospitable throughout the evening. He's a class act.  patandjill.jpgMeanwhile, Miss Jill Scott (www.jillscott.com/), who turns a leading lady triumph in the film, attended - telling me that I give a really good hug. (I've heard that before, but never JILL SCOTT!!!!). She was so busy receiving the varied press - including O-K Magazine staff writer Delaina Dixon (www.ok-magazine.com/) with whom I put on my National Association of Black Journalists' Chairman (of the Arts & Entertainment Task Force) cap to enroll her in joining and becoming a part of our ranks (www.nabj.org). She was gracious and interested. I have also mentioned my friend Sidra in this blog before (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2006/12/22/wake-up-and-dream.html). Well, her twin sister Tasha Smith (www.myspace.com/tashasactingworkshop) is a force of levity, comedy, sass, and good timing in "Why Did I Get Married?". You will LOVE her!!!!patandtwin.jpg She remembered meeting me a couple of years ago as I met her at Harlem Grill for an Eric Lewis concert at which she and her BFF Tyra Banks met Carl Nelson (also a great friend of hers and her body double Sidra), some other friends, and me. On that night, we ended up moving the tables out of the way and dancing (like nobody was watching). We had lots of fun and truly bonded that night. In that it was a couple of years ago, I didn't think she'd remember me, but she did... and received me so warmly. After seeing the film, I had to let her know how awesome she is in this project and - if you don't know her name yet - you will by the time this film makes its impression worldwide on the silver screen. Others in attendance include Miss Jackson's other half Jermaine Durpri, casting director extraordinaire Reuben Cannon, host with the most Gayle King, music executive Kevin Liles, Star Jones, Judy Reyes (from "Scrubs"), and dear friend of Carl Nelson, Kim Brockington (actress from "Guiding Light" - www.cbs.com/daytime/gl/ -and a one-woman-show, "Zora" about Harlem Renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston about which you will be hearing more in entries to come). I should also shout out my friend Lamman Rucker, who was not in attendance but does a great turn in the film. You'll recall I went to see him in a play that he was in here in New York City earlier this year.LAMMAN%20AND%20PATRICK.jpg He's one to watch - over and over (smile!). Musiq Soulchild was also in the house. AntandMusiq.jpgAlong with Keith Sweat, Keyshia Cole, Babyface, Anita Baker, Kelly Price, Gerald Levert, Tyrese, Beyonce, Amel Larrieux, Tamika Scott (Xscape), and Michael Buble, he is featured on the soundtrack (WhyDidIGetMarriedTheMovie.com).

I was so excited when I found out that another of my icons (and friend over the years) Miss Jennifer Holliday (www.myspace.com/thejenniferholliday) is not only featured in song to dramatic effect in the film and soundtrack of  "Why Did I Get Married?" (one of my favorites, "Givin' Up" - the Donny Hathaway remake), but she was a part of Miss Sheryl Lee Ralph's annual AIDS benefit "DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING" (www.divassimplysinging.com/), which I hear was something to behold this year. mainheader_2001_1.jpgI did not attend, but contributed in my own way to the star-studded affair. My friend Scott, in fact, called me to thank me on the morning after the festivities this past weekend. Sheryl said - some weeks ago - she would want our good girlfriend Ledisi on the bill (www.ledisi.com/). Scott, who has worked with Sheryl for many years, reads "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" and happened upon one of my Ledisi entries just after Sheryl declared that.ANTHONYLEDISIPATRICK.jpg Not knowing otherwise how to find her, he called me. I got him right to her publicist J'ai St. Laurent. And as Scott tells it, Ledisi was booked that day. I loved being in that mix and wish I'd attended as I hear the night was magical. From Jenifer Lewis to Natalie Cole to Ann Nesby to Ann's granddaughter Paris Bennett (who I had the chance to meet when I hosted the Disney Dreamer's Academy event at NABJ in Vegas - steveharvey.com/disneysdreamersacademy/) to Deniece Williams and on and on and on, these DIVAS belted out song after song for the best of causes. XIOMARAPARISPAT.jpgBut it would be Miss Holliday's turn near the end of the show when she reportedly sang "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" that landed the night (until she reunited with her "original Dreamgirls" Sheryl Lee Ralph and Loretta Devine with the "Dreamgirls (Reprise)" that is sung at the end of the show and movie). jennifer20holliday.jpgI'm told it was a MAGICAL MOMENT IN TIME that may never happen again. Scott will send me the DVD... and I'll tell you about it at that time. Meanwhile, read my friend Maurice Jamal's BLOG on it from his MYSPACE (http://www.myspace.com/mauricejamal) - http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=111685413&blogID=317519329

mauriceandpatrick.jpgSpeaking of Maurice Jamal, you know I've written about him many times in this BLOG. I interviewed him back in December for UneQ Magazine regarding his film "Dirty Laundry" (http://www.dirtylaundrythemovie.com/newsite/): http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/2/14/doing-laundry-with-maurice-jamal.html  If you like "Why Did I Get Married?", you too will dig "Dirty Laundry" which has been awaiting its turn for over a year now (Some friends of mine Adrienne Lopez, Michelle-Sanchez-Boyce and Nelson Boyce are co-producers on this project). dirty%20laundry.jpgAnd as Maurice prepares to work on "B-Boy Blues" (www.bboybluesthemovie.com/) in which I'm to have a little cameo, his latest baby is being released on December 7, 2007 by Codeblack Entertainment and FOX in Atlanta, Washington, DC, Baltimore, and New York. It's a beautiful film which I've seen and love. It breaks new ground with its storyline and it showcases some of our often squandered African American talent in a big way i.e. Rockmond Dunbar, Loretta Devine, Jenifer Lewis, etc. The cast and Maurice (who too co-stars in the film) will be coming to these cities before the premiere. MJUNeQImage.jpg

downing.jpgBefore I veer too far from Ledisi, I want to acknowledge that her publicist J'ai St. Laurent, my friend, and another of her clients Will Downing, whose Peak Records debut "After Tonight" is due out October 30th. (www.willdowning.com/) - a project on which he embarked after suffering the unique physical challenges associated with the debilitating muscle disorder known as Polymyositis. The 10-track album was produced with Downing’s longtime friend and collaborator (this is their 10th project together) Rex Rideout, who has worked with Downing for nearly 15 years. Make sure you check it out!

I mentioned seeing Star Jones (www.starjones.com/) at the Tyler Perry set. kevinandstar.jpgHer COURT TV show (www.courttv.com/onair/shows/star_jones/index.html)) is on my TIVO and has been backdrop (when not captive) to my 3:00 pm hour (if I'm home and on the heels of my CBS Soaps). One of the best things she features on the show is my dear NABJ sister Adaori Udoji, who is one of COURT TV's smartest talents (www.courttv.com/anchors/adaora_udoji.html). adaora-bio.jpgShe too - over the years - has been a mentor to me. She's reviewed my demo reel during a time where I was seeking representation and with her advisement, I landed ICM as a talent agency (from 2003 until this past summer). And this week, it is announced that she will be hosting a new public radio morning show. This as yet unnamed program, a joint effort of Public Radio International, WNYC, BBC, The New York Times, and WGBH, will be co-hosted by Emmy and Peabody award-winning journalist John Hockenberry. Based in WNYC's New York studios, the show will test the waters next month with a series of specials on the presidential election.

Another announcement from my "friend" repository and the journalism world came from NBC. On and on, I go some weeks, about my new buddy Mara Schiavocampo. Well, I can now officially say (since NBC did...) that NBC has named her as a digital journalist for "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" (www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/). It was announced earlier this week by executive producer Alexandra Wallace. My Mara's reprots will primarily run for nightly.msnbc.com. According to Wallace, "Mara has the perfect mix of broadcast and digital journalism experience. And we are thrilled to have her bring her innovative reporting to nightly.msnbc.com and the "Nightly News" team with her reports for the website." I advised her on a couple of points as she moved into this next frontier. And I'm so proud of her. MARAPATRICK.jpgYou'll also recall it was Mara who accessed Anthony and me to Senator Barack Obama (at the private airport in Vegas before he left town). CONGRATS - again - MARA!

Speaking of MARA (yet another one), have you folks been watching my girl Mara Brock-Akil's current season of "Girlfriends" (cwtv.com/shows/girlfriends) and "The Game" (cwtv.com/shows/the-game)? She's the Creator and Executive Producer of both. mara%20brock%20akil.jpgWell, I got an earful the other day about what is likely to be "Girlfriends"' final season and another vibrant turn for "The Game" when my "Amazing Grace" Nichole called me the other day. She and Mara are close and were having a quick lunch while Mara was in town for a panel that will inform an issue of "Newsweek" (www.newsweek.com): WOMEN & POWER that is out this week (October 15, 2007).  I've had the chance - through Nichole - to befriend Miss Mara, who has confided many things to me about the show --- none of which I can share here. But I can tell you to keep watching both shows as the season promises NOT to disappoint and even to surprise you when you least expect it.  girlfriend%20tracee.jpgOne of her quotes from the roundtable: “People still aren’t comfortable with women owning their sexuality. I am adamant about women talking about sex because I feel while a young woman is watching my show she sees these beautiful, professional and fashionable women talking about their own opinions about sex. I think that subconsciously tells that young woman (and all women), you have a voice about sex—whether it be insisting on using a condom, refusing when you’re not in the mood, asking him to do it better, or take an HIV and AIDS test. It’s very empowering thing to see women talk candidly about sex so that it doesn’t feel like something that men own. “I’ve gotten the most flak from the African-American community, particularly women. They feel that the characters on “Girlfriends” are too sexually free. I wanted to say sex is normal. You are not a whore, which is how television and films have depicted you. I want to give young women a road map of how to have an honest conversation about sex so they can be safe and healthy to live their fabulous lives." patnicholemaraSOUNDS like it was a great panel and will be an awesome issue of NEWSWEEK. As MARA and I wrapped our quick phone chat, which Nichole graciously allowed us to have, she told me "May I just tell you, Patrick that I read your BLOG religiously. It lightens me up and pulls me out of the stress of my day. So, I'm thrilled when you send the alert as I know I can get my fix," she said. "You are so funny and your writing brings me such joy.". I replied "Ditto... for Monday nights at 9:00 pm when "Girlfriends" comes on... and you've been doing that for the last eight years. Thank you!". What a blessing to have such great people (whose shows I admire) tuning in to "... the life of Riley...".

PATRICK%20AND%20TWEETY4.jpgSpeaking of my readers, the other day Anthony and I were at a sample sale for "American Chang" (americanchang.com/) - a designer I've referened a time or two as I was introduced to them via my favorite boutique N (www.nharlemnewyork.com/). American Chang, too, nominated me and "A DAY IN THE LIFE OF RILEY: POP CULTURE & POSSIBILITIES"  for its "Golden Poodle" late last year. (As a result, their website links to mine and they've reported that a lot of traffic gets to me via their site. THANKS FOR THAT. With that, as Anthony and I secured some awesome pieces, a young lady I had not met is helping us find our sizes, etc. At a point, she goes into her office. (At this point, we're only anonymous shoppers and she's anonymously a worker whose helping us find what we want). She - from the office - says "Patrick!!!!????". I say "Yes!". She says "I'm Meredith. I was literally reading the new entry on your BLOG when you walked in the door". WHAT A MOMENT! THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES, huh? That means everything to me as we had been in communication with Meredith since the nomination. We just hadn't met. I wasn't even clear that Anthony and I were IN "American Chang"s showroom for the sample sale (as these types of sales can sometimes be in neutral or loaned spaces). With that, we greeted each other more affectionately and uncovered she's from Atlanta, parts of Georgia I've spent lots of time.PatandATLGirlatAmC.jpg She introduced us to R. Scott French (www.rscottfrench.com) who is the master designer behind "American Chang" and "R. Scott French". PatandAntatAmC.jpgWe also met Michael Wesetly (www.michaelwesetly.com/) whose designs balance out the look of this couture house. And unlike when we are in stores and Ant and I have the challenge of getting everything we want and that fits under one roof, we were able to secure all of our specs in this one space... at one time.

carlpatnic.jpgNichole and I got the chance to hang out in the city last week. I'll share our itinerary here as Anthony was out of town. We stumbled upon some cool New York City sites. For brunch, we were joined by my friend Carl Nelson who was out bike-riding. CarlBike.jpgWe went to HK on 39th and 9th in the city. Then, we did a little flea market run right outside. (www.nyc.com/arts__attractions/Annex__Hells_Kitchen_Flea_Market.870685/editorial.aspx). From there, she and I joined Dorothy downtown in SOHO. She is the head seller of a fabulous earring (and jewelry) that Nichole likes so much (www.castronyc.com). JANET%20ET%20AL%20007.jpgFrom there, it was MERC BAR for champagne and wine (www.mercbar.com/). patandnic.jpgThis is where Nichole, Mara Brock-Akil, and I enjoyed each other's company the time before when Mara was here (from picture above). Nichole and I, then, went up to Harlem and met our friend Carl at my friend Brian's spot Native where we enjoyed the conversation of our favorite bartender Jose. PatandJose.jpgWe, then, hung out with Carl near his digs in Harlem via Riverside Drive. PatUptown.jpgHere, I took a horizontal pose atop the wall that overlooks the Westside Highway (I don't know. I was feeling very "Mahogany" since I'm holding the new issue of 'UPTOWN' Magazine (www.uptown-magazine.com/), which I'd just acquired and had to keep close to my chest with Alicia Keys on the cover, Diana Ross file pix and musings on the inside, plus an article on African American art that wow'd my Anthony upon his return as he's an artist and collector. cover.jpgThis is my good girlfriend Carla Willis' debut issue as Editor-in-Chief, so I was thrilled to read it. Please check it out: www.uptown-magazine.com/. [On the subject of art, I should shout out my friend Quincy Ballon who just opened his gallery in Brooklyn (DUMBO to be exact...). galleryqb (www.galleryqb.com) just opened and is chockful of antique furnishings and contemporary artwork. Currently, they are featuring the original work of Anthony Rebholz.] I, then, said good night to Carl and Nichole to meet up with my friend Michael K. Watts. He and I attended Nicole Childers' birthday party at Bona Fides in the East Village (www.bonafidesrestaurant.com). mskandco.jpgNicole is Executive Producer of NPR's "News and Notes" (www.npr.org). patandfriend.jpgThough I missed my Mara and her husband Tommie by five minutes, I did get to see Mara's best friend David Puente, anchor of ABC News' "Exclusiva" and a host of others from my journalism circles. After that, I hooked up with my stylist friend Jamar and his buddy from D.C. and we capped off the night at "No Parking", my friend Brian's other spot that he owns. WHAT A NIGHT!!!!

SOME POP CULTURE MUSINGS!!!!!

Vanessa L. Williams had me howling last Thursdsay on "Ugly Betty" (abc.go.com/primetime/uglybetty/index.html) when - in a scene with the show's star American Rivera - she says: "COME ON GIRL! I AM BLACK. YOU ARE MEXICAN. LET'S NOT TALK AROUND IT LIKE A COUPLE OF DULL WHITE PEOPLE!!!!". I loved it!!! vanessa%20and%20ugly%20betty.jpgIt reminded me of my former co-host Michael Musto's piece on me in his VILLAGE VOICE column in which he wrote:    For the panel, they ended up assembling me, FRANK DECARO, SIMON DOONAN, a hottie, and a black person. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/8/5/a-black-person.html) Referening the pilot we shot a couple of years ago, this is how he referenced me. Well, I'm happy to report that I'm doing alright and looking into the WHAT'S NEXT? everyday... and I saw the HOTTIE - T.R. Pescod - last night from the TV in my suite at the OMNI HOTEL in Chicago where I'm working on an assignment. He was in a great new VOLVO ad (and YES! He's still HOT!). See him here in a BRITISH AIRWAYS ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdo_g_aSfZs). HI T.R.!!!!! YOU HOTTIE YOU!!!!!tr%20pescod.jpg Speaking of HOTTIES and BLACK PEOPLE, have you seen MISS MARIAH CAREY in her new commercial promoting her new fragrance "M" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-oBDKOXjb4)? HOT STUFF!!!!!! Oh! And speaking of BLACK PEOPLE: "I SEE BLACK PEOPLE!!!" At least, that's what TV ONE promotes in its new AD slogan (www.tvoneonline.com). Well, daughter of my NABJ friend Pat Tobin, Lauren Tobin (publicist in her own right) asked that I shout out radio personality Michael Baisden who comes to television (TV ONE to be exact) with a new primetime talk/variety series, “Baisden After Dark”. Baisden400.jpgTargeted to a “grown and sexy” audience, the show explores a wide range of provocative topics with an eclectic mix of celebrity and special guests from the worlds of entertainment, politics, sports and music. Baisden opens each show with a monologue, followed by a celebrity roundtable discussion of one hot topic, ranging from the bold and sexy, to the sublimely serious. Check it out! Oh! And speaking of "grown and sexy", how much are we loving the "Soul Train" repeats on the weekend?vanityprince83.jpg I just saw the "Vanity" appearance when she promoted her "Action Jackson" film and the accompanying song. I couldn't find it on YOU TUBE and I know she's found the Lord, but Miss Vanity used to turn it, didn't she? Remember this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wTD9b6H4Xk

WHAT HAS (POP CULTURE) DONE FOR ME LATELY? Too much... I LOVE IT!!!!!

antandgwen.jpgP.S. Oh! And many of you have been asking "WHERE ARE JASON AND MARQICE?"antandjandm.jpg Well, we found them and got to spend some time with them (and dog GWEN) recently at their home in Queens. PatandJandM.jpgAnd I'm happy to say that - as two pairs of couples who consider ourselves a posse all our own - "WE'RE STILL TOGETHER"!!!!!! LOVE YOU, GUYS!!!!!!

natandpatrickP.P.S. My "Amazing Grace" Natalie and her husband Dwayne are the exemplars of the positive-toned question: "WHY DID I GET MARRIED?" And this week, with two gorgeous and smart little girls to boot, they celebrate their 12TH ANNIVERSARY!!!patandpalmers.jpg CONGRATS YOU TWO!!!! And enjoy your VACATION!!!!!!

P.P.S. After the "WHY DID I GET MARRIED?" screening, Ant and I celebrated a bit at SPLASH (www.splashnyc.com). TheBoys.jpgWe ran into our usual suspects, including Nathan "Seven" Scott, Toyce, and  Raymonde Green from UNeQ Magazine. He graciously put some of our pix on his website's gallery pages. "...IT'S TAUGHT ME TO LOVE. SO, IT'S REAL..."

"... YOU'LL BE OUT IN THE WORLD. SUCH A PRETTY GIRL..."*

PATMICHELLE.jpgI shouted out my friend Michelle, who - as I've chronicled here - is responsible for my meeting Kodjoe, my spiritual soul mate who passed away in March 2005. You'll recall, Kodjoe and Michelle were the best of friends and I met him at her home. I've known Michelle since 1996 and met her through my near-and-dear Lisa Goodnight. LISAPAT.jpg

On this blessed day, we all came back together for the joyous occasion of Michelle's union to her Neil... and what a day it was. They had to be the most beautiful and handsome couple known to man. And the ceremony was the most elegant and under-stated scene I've experienced in a long time. From the  well-cued-and-sung choir to the timeline for the whole afternoon and evening, this was an event no doubt produced by an award-winning TV exec. My Lisa, who came up from Maryland with her fiance Lex in tow, was a bridesmaid. And she was absolutely stunning a la "Mahogany" as she let the 'glam squad' work her already beautiful canvas into an understated-yet-glamorous work of art. To know my Lisa is to know that she doesn't fuss over her looks, but she allowed it this go around and just showed up like a candidate for 'America's Next Top Model' (or something the like). This wedding and reception, too, were a chance for two disparate entities in my life to come together and bond. Anthony had only met Lisa briefly a few months ago, but she got to spend some more time with him during the reception. Lex and Ant had never met, but got the chance to connect as the significant others' of Lisa and me, who can be in our own world when we get together. They got along splendidly. Thank goodness our guys got along well. ANTPATLISALEX.jpgAnd then, there was the chance to see all of these people I have known over these years via either Lisa, Michelle, or Kodjoe. And under one roof, they were all there standing for Michelle and Neil. But we also were happy to be together again in many respects - for a happy and sacred occasion.LISAANT.jpg

Congrats to Michelle and Neil.

Afterwards, Anthony and I segued from wedding/reception to a birthday party for our Mara. MARATOMMYFRIEND.jpgThe setting was in Manhattan at Casa La Femme Restaurant (www.casalafemme.com). The cuisine was Egyptian and quite tasty. MARABELLYDANCER2.jpgThe scene was as well - from the belly dancer to the hookah.ANTMARA.jpg And we took every offering very seriously. As I've chronicled over these months, Mara and her husband Tommy have become dear friends of Anthony and mine. Mara goes so far as to say we are her favorite couple, which always makes us blush.PATMARA.jpg But it was additionally wonderful to be in the presence of her many friends who love and adore her. They too have great energy and it made for an awesome after-set to our already festive day. BELLYDANCERANT.jpgCongrats to Mara on a new year... and a new gig. We'll be hearing more about her professionally in weeks to come. MARABELLYDANCER.jpg

"... I LOVE YOU NOW AS I LOVED YOU THEN..."

ANDREWBOZOPAT.jpgI got the chance to host one of my favorite Savannah-based cousins Kejuanna and her husband Andrew this week. They were celebrating their 5th wedding anniversary and opted to come through New York City en route to the Bemuda Music Festival (www.bermudajazz.com/).  She wanted to do a lot for the day they were here: morning shows; Sylvia's for breakfast; Empire State Building; shopping; "The Color Purple" with Fantasia; etc. I hooked her up with house seats for the latter; unfortunately, Fantasia was not on for the matinee they attended. They did enjoy just the same. Meanwhile, she made reservations for us to dine at "Justin's" as she and Andrew like the one in Atlanta; howwever, it was closed upon their arrival. I instead took them to "Maroon's" for rum punches (http://maroonsnyc.com/) and "Cafeteria" for dinner (www.cafeteriagroup.com). PATBOZOANDREW.jpgWe used this time to simply catch up as my cousin and I haven't really had any quality, one-on-one time in ten years or so (though we've glimpsed each other on holidays and such). During this time, I got to know her husband Andrew better. And he is a total sweetheart and a really good balance for her. Though Anthony had left town on the day we hung out, he did get the chance to see them and spend a little time on the night prior after they got into town. Everybody got along splendidly. After dinner, Kejuanna wanted to roll by "40/40" (www.the4040club.com/), which was closed for a private function. But she still got to pose in front. BOZOAT4040.jpgShe also wanted to get her Times Square on - to really demonstrate her time in "The Big Apple". PATBOZO.jpg

And to cap off the night, we went to my friend Marcos' spot "Voyage" for another round of rum punches. I am so glad I was in town to spend time with them.ANDREWBOZO.jpg

"... BE EVERYTHING THAT I SEE IN MY DREAMS..."

PATRICKCARL.jpgMy platonic boo Carl Nelson jumped right into his pre-Anthony role of escorting me to functions in the city (as Ant is out of town). On this night, we started with a round of cocktails at "The Ritz". KEVINANTHONYANDBAND.jpg

Then, we attended an intimate, acoustic evening of song by our dear friend Kevin-Anthony (of BLACK 2: BROADWAY fame, which I've referenced many times here in the BLOG: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/6/13/from-black.html). It took place at The Triad NYC (www.triadnyc.com) which is managed by arts performer/producer Lee Summers. PATRICKLEE.jpgI told Lee I think I want my next 'intimate evening of song' to be held here (http://216.117.188.141/rileyshowforkodjoe.wmv). It's intimate and warm. Like Kevin-Anthony, it's been a couple of years since I've done my own show (though I've sung at some special events and weddings). Not sure how I want to timeline this, but stay tuned. With a rhythm section of piano, drums, upright bass, and guitar, Kevin-Anthony kept us all captivated with his soulful vocals. KEVINANTHONY.jpgSometimes backed by his "sister" LaTanya (who is a solo artist in her own right and has sung background for Miss Ross for a couple of years at the turn of this century), Kevin-Anthony covered (to great effect) songs like "If God Was One of Us"; "I Can't Make You Love Me" [one of my staples on the link above]; "No Ordinary Love"; "He Loves Me"; "Imagine"; and a few original compositions that he co-wrote with many of the players on the stage as well as a couple of audience members in attendance.PATMARCIA.jpg

My Marcia Pendelton of "Walk Tall Girl Productions" was in attendance and we got to catch up.

After this show, my friend Jamar texted me to tell me to meet him at "The Sugar Bar" (www.sugarbarnyc.com) for its Thursday night open mic set.CARLFREDDIEJAMARRYANPATRICK.jpg

It was R&B legend Freddie Jackson's birthday and he performed several of his classics on the stage. Jamar's and my friend Ryan was also in attendance and we got to catch up (In fact, he's a performer and his comic troop Poykpac can be seen on You Tube -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiZVc_EJMQM (and other links) - and soon in NYC - www.poykpac.com/. Stay tuned for more on that.).CARLRYANPAT.jpg

 CARLATGRAY.jpg

Carl, Ryan, and I did a pitstop to Gray's Papaya (seen in many films like "Die Hard" and Chris Rock's "Down To Earth"). I joked that our two servers should have been in the movies. They weren't. So I'm putting them on the blog. PATATGRAY.jpg

JAMAR.jpgFrom there, we reconnected to Jamar who was left behind at the Sugar Bar, posed for a couple of pix... PAT.jpg... and then we all segued to Club Shelter for SPRUNG (what used to be "Luke and Leroy" - www.clubshelter.com). RANCARLPATPHILLIPETAL.jpg

Lots of our usual suspects and buddies were in the house -  from Dexter to Randall to Chris to Raymond, etc. I got the chance to hang out a bit with Phillip Bloch - stylist and actor - who told me of some projects he's working on, including a film in which he co-stars titled "The Unseen" due out November 1st (www.phillipbloch.com/). It was a good night all around. RANDALLPATDEX.jpg

"... YOU ARE GROWING OLDER NOW... "

ERICAPATRICK.jpgErn, Anthony, and I did go and support comedienne and actress Erica Watson who is a part of the ensemble “Craigslist: Live and UNAUTHORIZED!!!” – comprised of real Craigslist (www.craigslist.org/) listings like:

*Swingers party for Lesbos! NO MEN!
*Meet me in a buddy booth in Times Square

The play with music - which was presented at  Mo’Pitkins (http://www.mopitkins.com) - was a total hoot. Conceived and directed by Roman Feeser, this play was funny, nasty and raw. And just what you want to see at MIDNIGHT. Stay tuned for future runs of this production, which featured a stellar cast and witty writing (in addition to the real-life entries). And our Erika was WONDERFUL!!!

"... BUT YOU KNOW THAT I STILL CARE..."

I must shout out some folks who are doing things that I either could NOT attend or that are just worth mentioning:

DSCF1084.JPG1. My Nichole's good friend Michelle Sanchez-Boyce (who - with her husband Nelson) has become dear to me as well. In February 2006, Michelle started Simplicity Designs. It's been over a year and she's done quite well for herself. Check out her new site at www.simplicitydesigns.org.  michelle.png

Also, check out the hot links section.  It's a special section she's dedicated to positive individuals who are making it happen.  These individuals have either inspired or supported her professional journey...  CONGRATS MICHELLE!!!!

2. die%20mommie%20die.jpgYou folks hear me often speak about LIVEOUTLOUD (LIVEOUTLOUD.INFO) and the important work that it does for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender youth in connecting them to leaders and role models in the LGBT community. They are hosting a special benefit performance of Charles Busch's "Die MommieDie!" on Wednesday, October 10th at 8:00 pm at New World Stages (340 West 50th Street). The rioutous, comedy-thriller steeped in the glamour of 1960s Hollywood is one of the most-anticipated and hilarious new comdedies of the fall season, stars Charles Busch as Angela Arden and Emmy-award nominee Van Hansis as Lance. I watch Hansis everyday on "As The World Turns" (CBS). He is portraying a teen who came out as gay and is now adjusting to being his truth in a town that isn't the most accepting. All proceeds from the evening will benefit LIVE OUT LOUD. To purchase tickets, go to www.broadwayoffers.com or call 212.239.6200.

3. I got the chance to know the cast of the most recent BET's College Hill. Since that time, one of its co-stars J.T. (2nd from right in pic below with his co-star Willie, next to me... and my Morehouse brother Khalid) has stayed in touch. He's working on some great projects including a celebrity basketball game. 3-11-2007-16.jpgHe's just signed with a new record label and is helping them put this together at Los Angeles City College. The reason for him doing this event is for the Jena 6 movement.

4. Remember some time back (last November, maybe...), I met a millner (hat designer) named Jennifer Ouellette (www.jenniferouellette.com/). tracy%20reese%20jennifer%20hat.jpgJennifer made hats for the Tracy Reese collection that went out during Fashion Week last month (www.tracyreese.com/). CONGRATS JENNIFER!!!! LOOKING REALLY GOOD!!!!
5. I have mentioned how when I moved here to the New York City-area, I worked as a producer for Geraldo's nighttime show "Rivera LIVE!" at CNBC. We spent lots of time booking pundits to talk O.J., race, and everything in between. Often, I would book Tavis Smiley for our roundtable. tavis.jpgA couple of years later, after he got his show on BET, he and his producers would call on me to weigh-in on pop culture and entertainment issues (http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/PRileyGeneralReel.wmv). Now, Tavis is a multi-media mogul (www.tavistalks.com/) and came to New York City to celebrate the new expansion of SmileyBooks (www.tavistalks.com/media/smileybooks/), a partnership with Hay House, which publishes Tavis' books and now and growing roster of other authors, including Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant, Dr. Cornel West, Tom Burrell, and Eleanor Hinton Hoytt. tavis%20smileybooks.jpgI was invited to the launch party but wasn't able to attend due to scheduling conflicts. But my Michael K. Watts attended and says it was a great set.my%20michael.jpg In attendance: Tavis (of course), Dr. Cornel West, Iyanla Vanzant, Tom Burrell, Terry McMillan, Ruby Dee, James Earl Hardy, Terrie Williams, Keith Boykin, Judith Jamison, Benilde Little, Herb Boyd, and a host of our other mutual friends. cornell%20iyanla.jpgSet at 267 fifth avenue on the 11th floor, Michael says a jazz band played, there was wine & cheese + crudite, hummus/pita, coconut cake and cupcakes (which were decorated in blue a la SmileyBooks, hay house, and tavis' upcoming book "love wins" alternately), and cute bartenders (good detail. THANKS MICHAEL!). He says it was very festive and a great turnout. CONGRATS TAVIS!!!!!cornell%20tavis.jpg
"... KNOWING THAT YOU CAN COME TO ME WHENEVER YOU ARE SAD..."
After a long, 16-year battle with multiple sclerosis, the mother of my dear friend Audrey (often referenced here in the blog) passed away last week. Having lost a mother, I know this is a sad time for her. She, however, is taking some comfort in knowing that her mother is no longer suffering.patrickandaudrey1.jpg I LOVE AUDREY so much and extend my sympathy and prayers to her, her sister Suzanne, her brother Karl, and their whole family. "IS THAT ME I DON'T RECOGNIZE?"

DRCORNELPATRICK.jpgDuring his heyday at Harvard University, I got the chance to go up to Cambridge and interview Dr. Cornel West for a story I was doing. I’ve run into him a time or six since that 1998 interview and he never fails to keep me intrigued, informed, and inspired. Those touches helped to salvage an AllHipHop Social Lounge (during AllHipHop.com Week) at Pace University that Anthony and I attended. Our “Queen of All Media” Wendy Williams was also a part of the panel ( www.thewendywilliamsexperience.com/ ). Rapper David Banner ( www.david-banner.com/ ) ignited the audience into lots of laughter and various sound effects for his opinionated take on the industry and the world. PATRICKDAVID.jpgMaster P brought a new idea and forwarding vision to the table. It wasn’t always popular, but he says he is committed to doing it differently and being more responsible in the game. ( www.hobotraveler.com/masterpwebsiteinsert.html ). Afterwards, Dr. West signed his new contribution to the hip hop landscape ( www.hiddenbeachmedia.com/index.php?option=com_artist&Itemid=35&id=43 - 39k ) – making it clear that there is more than one WEST in the mix (GO KANYE!!!).PATRICKDRCORNELL.jpg Dr. Cornel’s collection is titled Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations and he collaborates with the likes of Prince, Talib Kweli, Andre 3000, KRS-One, Jill Scott, Rhymefest, and the late Gerald Levert on the project. Lots of science was being dropped at this event.cornel%20west.jpg

Afterwards, Anthony and I hooked up with my Godchild Owen Angelo’s father Owen who too drives me around town a lot. OWENPATJOSEPHANT.jpgHis friend Joseph was visiting from the Philippines. Owen wanted Anthony and me to meet him because Anthony is taking me to the Philippines for my birthday in November. We’re going to see Beyonce perform in Manila ( www.beyonce.com/ ) and just take a few days of downtime for us. BEYONCE%20DREAMGIRLS.jpgThough my birthday is November 19, this is the early birthday present. And we’re really excited to take our growing relationship international. Last Thursday night, I saw my Raymond Green (www.UneQmagazine.com) at The Ritz, the spot where the “boyz” are on Thursday night. RAYMONDPATRICK.jpg

R&B “divo” Freddie Jackson was in the house too. PATRICKFREDDIEJACKSON.jpgAfterwards, Anthony and I met down at SPRUNG (now at “The Shelter” - www.clubshelter.com ) to support our friend Richard Pelzer, Managing Director at
MEGA Management Inc. (www.MEGAManagementInc.com
Richard@MEGAManagementInc.com
www.MySpace.com/Think_MEGA_Now). PATRICKRICHARDANT.jpgHe is so loved and adored by many in the business, including “glam squad greats” Oscar James and Sam Fine. samfineoscarjames.bmpRichard was sporting a look of T-shirt and T that he says was inspired by my Anthony (from our "Bleu" PROM ensemble that Anthony created). Ant and Richard work closely on projects like "Bleu" Magazine. Anthony is quite the trendsetter. patrickandantatBLEUPROM.jpg

Erica Watson was there too. She’s doing a big show here in the city. It’s called “Craigslist: Live and UNAUTHORIZED!!!” – comprised of real Craigslist (www.craigslist.org/) listings like:

*STR8 Black Top looking for a bottom to suck
*Swingers party for Lesbos! NO MEN!
*Meet me in a buddy booth in Times Square
Your ad may be featured in their play! It turns this Friday at MIDNIGHT at Mo’Pitkins (http://www.mopitkins.com). It’s conceived and directed by Roman Feeser… and I’m told you have never seen a play as funny, nasty and raw as this one.....and
it was all written by YOU!!!! ERICAPATRICK.jpgBack to Richard’s party, his best friend Rodney LoveJones of Bill Jones Epicure Delights did a (6) layer Red Velvet I-Pod Birthday Cake... which was delicious. BILLJONESCAKE.jpgCheck him out at: www.iambilljones.comPATRICKBILLJONES.jpg

The weekend put Anthony and me in host mode – so we reached out to our usual spots. We did Cafeteria ( www.cafeteriagroup.com ) with my “amazing grace” Nichole and her sister Tori who is a DC-area-based artist and wife and mother of two. NICHOLEPATRICKTORI.jpgAfter our tasty delights, we went to THE SPOT (let’s just call it that from now on - www.karaoke17.com). ANTNICHOLETORIPATRICK.jpg

Through the night, we sipped on saki and truly enjoyed each other’s selections. Tori and I did a duet or two.TORIPATRICK2.jpg

NICHOLETORI2.jpg She and Nichole channeled their childhood doing songs their mother shared with them like Phoebe Snow’s “Poetry Man”, which is featured on Queen Latifah’s new CD project, “Travlin’ Light” (www.QueenLatifah.com) which dropped this week. queenlatifah.jpg

Anthony and Nichole collaborated on several tunes as well.ANTHONYNICHOLE.jpg Then, of course, I did most of my songs solo. Hogging the mic, some might say. But whatever.PATATMIC.jpg

On Saturday, we all reconvened at Chez Oskar (http://www.chezoskar.com) in Brooklyn for a brunch of good food and endlessly flowing mimosas. LATOYATORINICHOLEPATRICKDAWN.jpgNichole’s friend Dawn and Tori’s friend Latoya joined us and we had a great time. Afterwards, we hung out at Dawn’s place. ANTHONYDAWN.jpg

When we got hungry again, we went down to “Night of the Cookers” ( www.nightofthecookers.com ) across from Moshood ( www.afrikanspirit.com/ ) and - FINALLY! – Moshood was in the house and got to meet my Anthony. PATRICKMOSHOOD.jpgAnthony now wears a lot of Moshood – so it was nice for him to meet the man behind the wears. Additionally, Moshood was happy to see me as it had been some time. Normally, Kunle is holding it down. patrickandclinton.jpgHe spoke proudly of how I wore his Moshood to The White House for my interview with President Bill Clinton and how I have been supporting him since the beginning up until now as I was sporting MOSHOOD when I introduced Samuel L. Jackson at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Las Vegas and that footage made “Access Hollywood” and “TV ONE Access”. SAMPATRICK.jpgAnd it’s true! I LOVE MOSHOOD (as I’ve reference here before: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/display/ShowJournal?moduleId=875700&currentPage=3). After dinner, we also got our dessert on with THE CAKE MAN (www.cakemanraven.com or check out: www.youtube.com/cakemanbklyn or www.myspace.com/cakemanraven),whose red velvet cake knocked our socks off.

Sunday, my good girlfriend Patrice came into town from Dallas. She, Ern, and I have done lots of traveling together over the years – Martha’s Vineyard, Dallas, ski slopes, etc. When we first started hanging, we were all footloose and fancy free (READ: SINGLE). Then, slowly and surely, we partnered off and she got married to a great guy Keron and they now have two beautiful kids Zach and Hunter. They are also the owners of a “Sports Clips” barber shop franchise in Dallas (www.sportclips.com/). She was here for business. So, she landed at LaGuardia and we high-tailed it to N Harlem, my favorite boutique ( www.nharlemnewyork.com/ ). PATRICKPATRICE.jpgLARRYPATRICK.jpgI brought her here a couple of years ago when she was in town - along with Keron – the same weekend that Anthony was here celebrating his birthday and my “original Amazing Grace” Natalie and her husband Dwayne were in town. natpatantapatriceernkeronkim.jpgShe knew “N” was a must-do… and given her couture purchases, I know why. She got some gorgeous pieces. PATRICEGAIL.jpgAfterwards, we had another “liquid lunch” (of sorts) at Native Restaurant. Then, we hung out in Chelsea a bit – even shopping some more at Brooklyn Industries (www.brooklynindustries.com). PATRICE.jpgWe then met up with Anthony to have a caribbean/southern meal at Maroon’s – another of Patrice’s selects (http://maroonsnyc.com/). And – WHAT CAN I SAY? – Anthony recommended we go to THE SPOT… PATRICKPATRICEANTHONY.jpg

and this would mark Patrice’s first time behind the mic. She’s good!PATRICE2.jpg

On Monday, Anthony landed a role in Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard’s new film.howard_l.jpg Howard will lead the new action drama FIGHTING, which begins production on location in New York City this week for Rogue Pictures. Howard stars alongside Channing Tatum, Luiz Guzman, Zulay Henao & world-renowned professional fighter Cung Le as Sean's fearsome Korean foe in the ring… and my Anthony!!!! I’m so proud of him. Plot Concept: Fighting is a rough-hewn heroic tale about realizing dreams of glory, putting audiences ringside at high-stakes underground street fights. Tatum stars as Sean Arthur, a young man who scrapes up a living hustling counterfeit merchandise in NYC. With family tragedy in his past and his father keeping him at a distance, this outsider has little to motivate him. A chance encounter with veteran street-fighting coach Harvey Boarden (Howard) leads to a whole new career for Sean. The ensuing bouts get tough, especially with the criminal element horning in, so Sean gets tougher. He will fight to win, not only the prize money but also the unexpected new relationships that are strengthening him.

After Anthony landed the role, he stumbled into a cute, Chelsea boutique “Conquete” (www.conquete.net) where he bought me the most beautiful shirt. PATRICKATCONQUETTE.jpgHe’s really kind like that (HEY! HE’S TAKING ME TO THE PHILIPPINES. OKAY???). The piece was an original Latino Royalty T-shirt ( www.latinoroyalty.com/ ). Moreover, Richard, the owner and a designer in his own right, offered up his services to have some of these pieces custom-designed and tailored for Anthony. ANTHONYRICHARD.jpgThat pleased us immensely. Shout out to Richard for the great gear… RICHARDPATRICK.jpgand another shout out to our favorite T-shirt designers these days MINORITEES (www.minoritees.com). Its owner Collin just sent Anthony and me some more of their new, “afro”-centric designs, which are turning heads again.new%20minoritees.jpg

Afterwards we went to VOYAGE ( http://www.myspace.com/onemicnite ) for our friend Marcos’ open-mic night.MARITI.jpg “maritri” is the featured singer and host during the festivities. She was born and raised in Southern California. She graduated from Historically Black Fisk University in Nashville with a degree in Biology. While there, she was a Fisk Jubilee Singer and toured extensively. She then went to Howard University and studied composition and jazz and got a second bachelors and a Masters. She moved to New York with her band “Hue”, a trio of violin, piano and cello. They all sang and played. For years, she sang and played piano and wrote songs about love and life. But a couple of years ago, she says she picked up a guitar and fell in love and has continued to write songs about love, life and now angst as well ( http://www.myspace.com/maritrimusic or maritri, com). Also, my MOMENTUM brother Buttah performed a wonderfully impromptu "Yesterday" (a la The Beatles meet Ledisi). BUTTAH.jpg

On the previous Monday, Anwar Robinson (http://www.myspace.com/anwarrobinson) from “American Idol” held down the fort (as I reported). AnwarRobinson6.jpgBut there’s more news. Anwar and another “American Idol”-er Heinz Winckler are rehearsing now to go on the road with “RENT” ( www.siteforrent.com/ ). Anwar Robinson will be taking on the role of Tom Collins. Winckler, who was the winner of the first "South African Idol" in 2002 and the fourth place finalist in the 2003 inaugural "World Idol" competition (opposite “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson), will be playing Roger Davis. Robinson was the seventh place finalist on the fourth season of "American Idol." Robinson will make his stage debut in this non-Equity touring production of Rent. American audiences will recall Robinson as the music teacher who was rocketed to television stardom on season four of the pop-culture phenomenon "American Idol." His vocal range quickly landed him a coveted spot in the "Idol" Top 10, where Paula Abdul called him "technically the best singer of the competition." He's toured the country as part of the Idols Live show. The New Jersey native recently released his debut album, "The Truth About Love."

BUT GET THIS, my Morehouse brother/fellow Diana Ross and “Dreamgirls” fan Devon is THE SWING in this tour – meaning he is the UNDERSTUDY for these men’s roles and more. I’M SO PROUD OF HIM. 12-17-2006-13.jpg

You’ll recall, Devon came to New York City on a bus in December to see “Dreamgirls” with me. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2006/12/17/dreams-see-us-through-to-forever-part-two.html). Rent, written by composer-lyricist-librettist Jonathan Larson and directed by Michael Greif, opened at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre, on April 29, 1996, and continues to play there. It concerns the loves, losses and artistic passions of a group of bohemians living in Manhattan's East Village in the age of AIDS. The next generation of the national tour of Rent kicks off in York, PA, Oct. 15. For Winckler's official website, visit www.heinzw.co.za. Find Robinson at www.myspace.com/anwarrobinsonastomcollins.

NICHOLEPATRICKANTHONY.jpgOn Tuesday, Anthony and I hooked up with Nichole at The Vig Bar ( www.vigbar.com ) on Spring and Elizabeth near Chinatown. We really enjoyed the drinks and the DJ. Great ambiance.

Afterwards, we went to see Def Jam Recording artist Chrisette Michelle ( www.chrisettemichele.com/ ). CHRISETTE%20MICHELLE%202.jpg

My friend Keith Wooten is Director of Marketing for Island Def Jam and they scheduled a wonderful night of cocktails and good Chrisette singing at BLVD (http://www.blvdnyc.com/) and Crash Mansion ( www.crashmansion.com/ ), where she actually performed. NICHOLEPATRICK1.jpg

THEOANTPATNICHKEITH.jpgWe were growing sleepy and tired as the promised 9:45 show turned to 11-ish and change. But it was worth the wait and the yawning. NICHOLEPATRICK.jpg

She shut the kids down with her jazzy, yet powerful, vocals and stage flair. CHRISETTE%20MICHELLE.jpgThanks Keith! Though not an event, Anthony and I stumbled into the Waverly Restaurant in the West Village on 6th Avenue (and it was GOOD!). Great BREAKFAST late at night!

darrellandjames.jpgYesterday, I had to go to Temple in Philadelphia for an assignment. While there, I stumbled into my Morehouse brother James Earl Davis, Ph.D, who I actually just met at my college reunion back in May (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/5/22/walking-in-strange-and-new-places.html). He and his partner Darrell are friends of some Morehouse friends of mine. And we ended up bonding over our reunion weekend. He teaches in the College of Education/Education Leadership and he made my day. It was so good to see him and I’m certain we will all get together soon.

PATRICKAMY.jpgI had to rush back to New York City for good girlfriend Amy Dubois Barnett’s book party (www.amyduboisbarnett.com). Her new tome “Get Yours: The Girlfriends’ Guide To Having Everything You Ever Dreamed Of And More” features interviews with Gayle King, who co-hosted the affair at the SOHO Grand in Manhattan ( www.sohogrand.com/ ); Sanaa Lathan; Mo’Nique; Venus Williams; Kelly Rowland; Gabrielle Union; India.Arie; Kelis; Hill Harper; and more. Amy, who used to be the editor-in-chief of “Teen People” and “Honey” magazines attracted a big crowd last night in the Penthouse Suite of the hotel. It was a walk down memory lane leading to a road less traveled.

I met Dr. Shirley Madhere, M.D.,P.C. for example. PATRICKDRSHIRLEY.jpgShe’s the only African American woman plastic surgeon in New York City with two locations to boot. We hit it off in the elevator leading up to the party (and of course, I’ll keep her in my back pocket… not that black cracks like that… www.thenewaesthete.com). I also got to chat with Dominga Martin, Editor and Co-Founder of Crème Magazine, which she says want to do “… a day in the life with me…” piece for them. ( www.creme-magazine.com ) PATRICKDOMINGA.jpg

So many of my favorites – like Robin Stone and ESSENCE’s Patrik Henry Bass – were in the house. And then, industry buddies like Terry Wynn II and Adaori Adoja and Theo Perry and Shelley Wade were in the house. I met radio/TV personality Egypt. PATRICKEGYPT.jpg

But imagine my heart drop as I saw two of my dear friends from Savannah, Georgia who now live here and have for many years (like me), but we haven’t seen each other in a minute. KIERNAJOICELYN.jpgFirst, MISS Joicelyn Dingle (and her colleague in journalistic crime Kierna Mayo – both of whom are the “founders” of HONEY Magazine before it would be sold to VIBE and the many other hands who’ve touched it since) was in the house and ever as beautiful as I recall during high school as she attended the all-girls Catholic school on the other side of town (with my – at the time (GASP!) – girlfriend. Yes! They were good friends). Additionally, one of my best friends in the whole world who I’ve written about here Maurice Marable was there (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/4/-weve-come-a-long-way-baby.html). MAURICEJOICELYNPATRICK1.jpgWe had the best time just catching up – reflecting and projecting on our respective lives and where they’ve landed us. Anthony got to meet these two “blasts from my past”, which was so cool. We all promised to get together soon for a comprehensive catch-up.

The other night, I was to be a presenter at the African American Literary Awards ( www.literaryawardshow.com/ ). Scheduling didn’t allow. But I did go by as soon as I could get there and saw the awards show’s founder Yvette Hayward HAPPY that the night was a SUCCESS. YVETTEPATRICK.jpgShe says HILL HARPER came by. And she is holding me high to be in attendance next year as I was last year.

Meanwhile, Chaka Khan delivers her new album “Funk This” ( www.burgundyrecords.com/news.php?id=46 ), which I heard some months back. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/6/28/something-old-something-new-something-borrowed-something-fun.html)ChakaPatrick2.jpg

Well, she's multi-tasking this week as she also announced that she’s coming back to Broadway as “Sophia” in “The Color Purple”. fantasia.jpgNow you know there may be some carry over with Fantasia, who is currently shutting them down as Miss Celie in the NY version of The Color Purple . Additionally, gospel legend, BeBe Winans is poised to come aboard as ‘Mister”.colorpurple-cp-3644811.jpg And American Idol finalist, Lekisha Jones (lovingly named “Ki-Ki” by Miss Ross, after she found out that is what Lakisha’s ‘mama’ calls her) will join the cast as the church soloist and will sub for Khan as Sophia during evening performances.AI_Ross_06.jpg lakisha-746030.jpgCasting calls are still out for the role of Miss Celie, currently played by Fantasia.

michelle_williams.jpgThis, while from the Chicago-run of “The Color Purple” (which is wrapping), Michelle from “DC 3” (whose playing Shug Avery) and Latoya London (American Idol’s own from Fantasia and Jennifer Hudson’s season) – as Nettie – are going to open up the show in the Bay Area with the “original Broadway Sophia” Felicia P. Fields who too played the beloved character in the Chicago run. ( www.ticketmaster.com )LaToya_London.jpg

brotherssize.bmpMeanwhile, the theater community here in New York City, is all abuzz about ”THE BROTHERS SIZE” written by Tarell Alvin McCraney and directed by Tea Alagic. My Marcia Pendelton threw an Open House that I could not attend the other night, but I hear this is a piece to see. Playing fast and loose with West African myths, The Brothers Size brings contemporary rhythms together with traditions of ceremonial presentation to tell the modern-day story of the Size brothers–Ogun, an auto mechanic, and Oshoosi, a recent parolee. This breakout hit from our 2007 Under the Radar Festival is an imaginatively fresh new drama, in which the audience is at once the community, the witness and the judge. From Tarell Alvin McCraney, one of the most thrilling wordsmiths to emerge in the American theater in the last decade. A co-production with The Foundry Theatre. ( www.publictheater.org/UTR/brotherssize.php ).

So, of course, so many of my roads lead me back to MOMENTUM (www.momentumeducation.com). Last night, one of our Leadership Team’s threw a fundraiser to support Donors Choose, a non-profit that provides NYC classrooms with resources that our public schools often lack. Donors Choose allows teachers to submit Project Proposals for materials students need to learn and then money is raised to fulfill those requests. It's actually an effective way to support our public schools and to track your donations. The event was titled The 2007 Blackboard Benefit and it took place at Penthouse 15.  Anthony and I didn't make it. (What? We just decided to grab some dinner and make it an early night). But we will send our love via a donation to support NYC's teachers and students. I hear - though - the bar was open, the food was delicious, and the entertainment by acclaimed jazz artists "The Eric Lewis Trio” was spot on. For more info, please visit www.blackboardbenefit.org

The weekend ahead promises lots of love. There’s congratulations to our girl Mara for landing a gig with NBC and she too is celebrating her birthday. Anthony and I will join her and her friends for that fete-a-fete.  You'll recall, I’ve written about her here several times. ( thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/ ). antmarapatrick.jpg

And I’m excited to attend the nuptials of good girlfriend Michelle and her boy Neil who I’ve written about here before. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/22/more-today-than-yesterday.html) CONGRATS!!!!! neilandmichelle.jpgOh! And a quote of the week I want to share from Star Jones' new COURT TV show. It actually came from one of her guests this week, Rev. Juanita Bynum who has been in the news for a now-violent break-up with her Bishop husband. Jones asked Juanita if she was sad inside of all this personal pain and controversy. Her response: "I DON'T RELY ON MY FEELINGS. I RELY ON MY STRENGTH... I DON'T ALLOW WHAT I FEEL TO SWAY ME OR DETERMINE WHO I AM BECAUSE IT'S SO FLEETING. FEELINGS ARE FLEETING. SO, I DON'T PUT A LOT OF STOCK IN THAT. I DIDN'T FEEL LIKE GETTING UP THIS MORNING. I FELT LIKE LYING IN THE BED AND CRYING ALL DAY LONG. BUT IF I DO THAT, I GIVE THE POWER OF WHO I AM TO MY FEELINGS AND NOT TO MY PURPOSE. AND THAT'S WHAT KEEPS ME GOING: MY PURPOSE.

I loved this... and wanted to share. Have a great week!

"WAITING IN THE WINGS... DREAMING ALONG THE WAY"

So when I met my late, great soul mate Kodjoe back in 2001, he was soon to be off on a new adventure that would take him from New York City where he was a high-ranking producer for A&E Biography to breaking the color line in management at Country Music Television (CMT - www.cmt.com). Before he left, I was one of a small audience of close friends who he invited out to dinner at Shun Lee West ( www.shunleepalace.com/ ). There, I had one of several parting gifts for him (including my "heart") that was a comprehensive collection of Country music - not his favorite genre, but one I've appreciated over the years. He loved the thought of the gift and used it to armor his next couple of years, he told me.

Though during that time he left for Nashville, we took a break from our relationship after trying long-distance love (in large part because he was doing his best to focus on his work and the anticipated escape to come back home to New York City... and - let him tell it - me).

waiting_in_the_wings.jpgWell, he was not one to spend his time - even waiting time - purposelessly. He was instrumental in green-lighting and executive producing a documentary on the contributions of African Americans to country music. My fellow NABJ friend Karla Winfrey was the head creator and producer on this now-NABJ-Salute-to-Excellence-award-winning documentary "Waiting in the Wings" (http://www.cmt.com/shows/dyn/waiting_in_the_wings/series_about_special.jhtml). After Kodjoe's passing in March 2005, I would symbolically have the honor - later that year (October 2005) - to produce the NABJ "Salute to Excellence" Awards at which this piece was the victor. Documenting comprehensively more than a century, the special also questions why the genre historically has included few African American artists. The documentary also profiles five young African-American artists including American Idol finalist Kimberley Locke, Curb recording artist Trini Triggs, California songstress Vicki Vann, Pennsylvania native and Star Search finalist Rissi Palmer and Texas musical siblings 17-year-old Buddy and 15-year-old Tina Wright.CharleyPride.jpg

FAST FORWARD three years: We can report that one of the aforementioned Rissi Palmer -- with her debut single, "Country Girl" -- has become the first African American female country singer to hit the Billboard Country Singles chart in the past 20 years. It made its entry a few weeks ago at No 58. The last African-American female singer to have a single land on the Billboard charts was Dona Mason, whose "Green Eyes (Cryin' Those Blue Tears)" peaked at No. 62 in November 1987.

Look for more impressions as her self-titled debut (1720 Entertainment) is scheduled for release October 23. At the age of 19, Palmer reportedly declined a pop record deal from famed producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey) to pursue country, a genre and artform that she says is in her heart. Palmer consistently ranks as one of MySpace.com's Top independent country artists and has received over 760,000 plays of her music to date. Fans can hear a sneak peek of RISSI PALMER at www.myspace.com/rissipalmer. rissipalmer.jpg

BLACK FOLKS IN COUNTRY MUSIC!!!! A BLACK GIRL TURNING DOWN SUPER-PRODUCERS JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWIS TO PURSUE MUSIC HER OWN WAY!!!! Sounds like the stuff of which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s DREAM is made. So, on the heels of last night's DREAM CONCERT (http://www.thedreamconcert.com/main.html), imagine Anthony's and my tongue-in-cheek surprise when we stumbled into "THE" JIMMY JAM and his wife outside Radio City Music Hall --- just standing and perhaps waiting for their car. I took it upon myself to ask for a picture (me pointing out "I see you're here incognito, perhaps hoping not to be identified since you're without your hat." He just smiled and posed hatless.).JIMMYJAMPATRICK.jpg When Anthony's turn came up, he channeled his Taurean/Janet Jackson alter-ego and requested Mr. Harris put his hat on. That way, there's no confusion with whom he's posing. JIMMYANTHONY.jpgWhile outside, I also ran into my good friend Kunle who heads up Moshood's boutique in Brooklyn (www.afrikanspirit.com). PATRICKKUNLE.jpg

And I stumbled into old Atlanta homegirl India.Arie ( www.indiaarie.com/ ) whose "Hope" is on my MYSPACE Profile as we speak. She seemed genuinely happy to see me and wanted to know how I was doing and what I was doing - as she was preparing to cross "Avenue of the Americas" at 50th Street to go further West. It was a very quick and connected moment. INDIAPATRICK.jpg

These moments CAPPED off an already spectacular night in which Anthony and I got to enjoy India. Arie perform "Visions" with Stevie Wonder, the headliner of a star-studded concert designed to raise money to build a Martin Luther King monument on the Mall of Washington. india%20and%20stevie.jpg

QJCGSTEVIEAILL.jpgAfter Quincy Jones and Cuba Gooding Jr. presented a special award to Stevie (as his daughter Aisha and L.L. Cool J also looked on), he performed. "Love Is In Need Of Love Today" is how he started his set out. From there, he went into "Living for the City." After he and India did "Visions", he gave us "Superstition". And after Tommy Hilfiger closed the night, Stevie closed the 3 1/2 -hour show with "Happy Birthday," his 1980 song promoting the push to have King's birthday, Jan. 15, designated a national holiday. The campaign prevailed in 1983. (I recall in 1986 when Stevie and my Diana led an all-star cast in the singing of this song as conducted by Quincy Jones, who too recalled the historic moment.) STEVIEATDREAMCONCERT.jpg

Dr. King's children Bernice and MLK III were in attendance and participated in the show, but the highlights were endless. "The Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin preceded Stevie's set wih a spirited repertoire of "Respect"; "Make Them Hear You"; and the Gospel classic "Let Us All Go Back To The Altar".ARETHAMLK2.jpg She shared pictures of herself with Dr. King as well as those of her late father, Rev. C.L. Franklin who was a Detroit delegate for much of what Dr. King engineered around civil rights in the '60s. ARETHAATDREAMCONCERT.jpg

The rest of the bill was a melange of old and new artists - all there to lift their voices and sing! Opera diva Jessye Norman; Carlos Santana (who really got the audience on its feet with his recent hits); Garth Brooks (in a rare live turn... these days); Babyface; Ludacris; Usher (who just introduced Aretha Franklin); Wyclef Jean; Joss Stone; John Legend; Robin Thicke; BeBe and CeCe Winans; Donnie McClurkin; Kerry Washington; Cedric The Entertainer; Talib Kweli; etc. GREAT NIGHT!

$82 million had already been collected to pay for construction and maintenance of the memorial... before the show. Organizers hoped that much of the balance could be raised at the Dream Concert, where tickets ranged from $150 to $1,000. The memorial has been in the works since 1984, when the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity began to draw up plans for the project. Groundbreaking took place last year on a four-acre site along the Tidal Basin, between the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. The project, which will spotlight King's themes of justice, hope, democracy, peace and equality, is scheduled to be completed before the end of this decade.

With quick glimpses of industry associates like Al Roker, his wife Deborah, and Gayle King, Anthony and I got the impression that we were in the right place. Anthony's YOGA muse Russell Simmons was in attendance as a HOST of the event (along with Hilfiger, Quincy Jones, Jel Horowitz, David Stern, and Edgar Bronfman, Jr.). 20_23A.JPGHis friend Diddy joined the occasion. And it was our third time in a week of seeing Mr. Simmons and our 2nd time in a week of seeing Diddy, who - along with Simmons - co-hosted an event we attended last week: ALLHIPHOP.COM's "The Rebirth of Hip Hop" PARTY! It happened on an unsuspecting night in which Anthony and I were simply to get our YOGA on at Deepak Chopra's Center and Spa at Dream Hotel, another of our favorites. ( www.wayspa.com/thechopracenter/ ). Amidst our getting grounded, we were invited to this party. Reticent at first as I didn't have a change of clothes (other than my YOGA gear) and we had done FASHION WEEK up something lovely and were a bit tired. Now, rejuevenated from our YOGA, we felt we could handle another night. I'm glad we did. I got to hang out in V.I.P. a little bit with Russell and Andre Harrell, who is working on a project with Terrance Russ, who I've shouted out a time or two here in 'A Day in the Life of Riley' (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/display/ShowJournal?moduleId=875700&currentPage=3 or http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/6/20/and-you-too-wilona-looker.html). 19_22A.JPGFormer Uptown Records head Harrell has announced his involvement with "Terrance Russ Presents Uptown Music and Vision". The music album venture is a series of music album compilations featuring a wide and varied assortment of new music stars. The musical genres will showcase a vast array of musical genres from rhythm and blues, rap / hip hop, gospel , jazz , and spoken word / poetry. The production's executive producer Terrance Russ has even asked me to consider contributing some talent to the project. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, I got to further reacquaint with my Spelman sister Tanika Ray (of "EXTRA" fame) who was in attendance and happy to hang out with Anthony and me. 17_20A.JPGThey bonded a bit while we were in Vegas. 16_19A.JPG

Also, Wendy Williams was in the house. I did my best to chat her up for as long as she could, but her people (namely her husband Kevin) wanted to keep her moving, hence our not-so-well-framed picture.12_14A.JPG I'm excited that her VH-1 special is scheduled to premiere on October 20th (http://www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/the_wendy_williams_experience/series_about.jhtml). Robin Givens is scheduled to be on (by way of the radio show). Givens stars as Wendy in the upcoming independent feature "Queen of All Media", autobiopic on our own "shock jock". robin_givens_book_review.jpg

Through my friend Theo, I met some great people. Nicole Williams, one of the famous celebrity Style Agents on "Ambush Makeover" (www.stylenetwork.com/ssms-site/style.do?showId=6220).  She is the industry's new "style guru" who wants to make the world a prettier place - one person at a time. Her company, "The Face Gallery" (www.myspace.com/thefacegallery), offers makeup, hair, and wardrobe styling to various entertainment venues. Check her work out at: www.cyncitypromotions.com , click on Nicole Williams image. She's a great energy!!!15_18A.JPG

05_7A.JPGAlso in attendance? Two of Kimora's team members from "Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane" (www.stylenetwork.com/Shows/Kimora/index.html): JAMES, one of her senior executives; and BJ, another friend of Theo. He is Kimora's Senior Publicist. Both of them were quite pleasant and sweet to talk to during the night. 18_21A.JPG

Socialite with the "most" MARILYN CRAWFORD was there. She'd just flown in from Vegas by way of Santa Barbara by way of who knows where. She is a jet-setter and always in the right place at the right time (primetimeomnimedia.net/lmarilyn_crawford.html). CAN YOU KEEP UP?07_9A.JPG

My friend Audrey's cousin Natasha was there. She's now in the video promotions department at www.zombalabelgroup.com/. Turns out she mentioned me to her boss Anne-Marie, who I met --- unrelated to her mention --- the following day via my friend Ern. Small world...04_6A.JPG

I also saw my usual suspects: Ra-Fael Blanco and his crew, including UNeQ magazine's Raymond Green and super-sexy model Miguel. And a young lady named Radiance, the daughter of my good friends Tracey and Maurice, was in the house. I haven't seen her in seven or more years. She's now a Howard University grad and beginning her career in the business. 02_4A.JPGShe's beautiful and was my highlight of sightings for the night, which was produced by Miata David, party planner of the stars. She did L.A. Reid and Pebbles' son Aaron's party for MTV's Sweet Sixteen (www.bittorrent.com/users/mtv/series/My_Super_Sweet_Sixteen/30f5adeb-1ac6-11dc-8f32-00e081411f3f).

Afterwards, Anthony, Theo, and I stopped by MINT (www.mintny.com) - "a fresh taste in Indian Cuisine". Though not my favored food, we enjoyed wonderful ambiance and service and if you find yourself in Manhattan (East-way in the 50s), could be a cool spot for drinks, dinner, or a party, which Anthony and I can't seem to escape these days. PATNATHANANT.jpgPATRICKDANCING.jpg

We went out on Thursday night to support Nathan Hale Williams' new SPRUNG (now at "Shelter" - formerly "Luke and Leroy" - nathanhalewilliams.com/). Anthony and I went to celebrate Smoov's birthday. He's our Tweety's party-roving musical director. SMOOVPAT.jpgAlso, we met up with a couple of members of Tyra Banks' GLAM SQUAD - Valente, her Emmy-nominated makeup artist, to whom we were introduced by our friend Scott, who works for Sheryl Lee Ralph. With him was Earl, wardrobe stylist for Tyra. Earl and I had never met but knew each other through his partner Vince who I met through my Chicago Carl. Now that Tyra is in New York City (tyrashow.warnerbros.com/), so are these guys. So, we're excited to have some new friends in town.ANTVALENTIPATEARL.jpg

PATCARLAERN.jpgSpeaking of friends in town, Ern and I got the chance to hang out with "our Carla" this past weekend. Carla, who just got married in July, came up to hang with Anthony, Ern, and me for some catch-up time. PATANTCARLA.jpg

Last I saw Carla, Anthony and I were in Atlanta (in February). I blogged about it. With that, we gave her some great times and enjoyed the ride as we did it. On Friday, we hooked up with my "Amazing Grace" Nichole who hosted a little set for all of our friends: CJ, David, Nelson, Michelle, Dawn, and Tony. NICHTONYDAWNANTNELSONMICHELLE.jpgPATCJ.jpg

We ate lasagna and chicken 'n dumplings. Sipped lots of champagne. Watched some Katt Williams (kicking and screaming... for me, but he was speaking some truth) - (www.kattwilliams.com/). PATTONY.jpg

And just enjoyed the presence and beauty of love, life, and friendship. PATNICHOLEANT.jpg

On Saturday, Carla wanted to do some shopping (which she always loves to do and I made sure we gave some of our $$$ back to Harlem a la my favorite boutique - www.nharlemnewyork.com). ERNCARLAJAMARPATGAIL.jpg

But she, the guys, and I decided to stop through Central Park (where Diana did her legendary turn in the rain via The Great Lawn in 1983). PATATGREATLAWN.jpgCarla had never been and wanted to experience a little bit of the "city within this city". ERNCARLAANT.jpg

We also did a nice dinner at Grand Lux Cafe (www.grandluxcafe.com/). I took Carla back to the airport on Monday morning - hoping that this weekend gave her the much-needed spiritual and energy boost for which she was longing and calling. It's always great to reconnect with good folks who are - as she says all the time - "authentic". Mission accomplished.

By the way, are you guys watching "That's So Raven!" on Disney Channel? (psc.disney.go.com/disneychannel/thatssoraven/) raven.jpgAdmittedly, I stumble across it and like it a lot. Anthony and I tuned in on Saturday monring (or afternoon as it was a marathon). It was cute to see Anne Marie Johnson in her recurring role as a fashion designer who hires Raven as an intern. I LOVE HER... in everything - from "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka" to "Girlfriends". geoffreyowens.jpgAnneMarieJ_Kambo_4854689_400.jpgAlso, Raven seemed to reconnect (indirectly) with one of her old "Cosby Show" castmates Geoffrey Owen (Elvin), who played Raven's platonic boyfriend's father on an episode in which he's split up from his wife played by Rae Dawn-Chong. rae%20dawn.jpg

Fun episode! When I'm not out, I do take in the tube or the TIVO... if not Anthony.

"I LOOK BACK ON ALL THOSE GOOD TIMES..."

15 MINUTES OF ACCESS:

SAMPATRICK.jpg I was on "Access Hollywood"!!! I didn't see it though. My sister's friend Aquilla called her and told her that she saw me in a profile that my friend Shaun Robinson did while at the National Association of Black Journalists' convention in Vegas. She interviewed Samuel L. Jackson for his film "Resurrecting the Champ"' while there. Her crew also captured the screening at which I introduce Mr. Jackson and apparently used that excerpt in the edited piece. Thanks Shaun! SHAUNANDPATRICK2.jpg

I guess THE SECRET really works. I said I would be on "ACCESS HOLLYWOOD" or something like it on the heels of the convention. Now, if I can just get a permanent gig there. Like a SECRET??? Here it goes...

WORK THAT BODY!!!

DANCE%20CLASS%20POSSE.jpg Last night, Anthony and I did our hip hop dance class with Tweety at Alvin Ailey. It had been a couple of weeks since we'd been (due to scheduling conflicts and travel) and we were happy to get our workout on again. We invited our friends Robert, Eddie, and Frank to join us as well. This routine was to Swizz Beatz' "No Money in the Bank" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cS37_PtDiYo). We had a lot of fun. And according to Tweety, there's more fun and getting in shape to be had. She is offering a high-energy, hip hop workshop at The Ailey Extension (www.alvinailey.org).

AVENUE

PATRICK%20AND%20TWEETY3.jpg After our workout, Anthony, Tweety, and I got spruced up for a party downtown at Duvet ( www.duvetny.com/ ). We were celebrating AVENUE REPORT Magazine ( www.AVENUEREPORT.com ) and/or ( www.myspace.com/AVENUEREPORT ), which just released its second issue with Common gracing the cover.  avenue%20cover.bmpTweety's publicist and adviser Ra-Fael Blanco (www.myspace.com/2rsentertainmentandmedia) also represents the mag and he invited us all to be in the mix. AVENUE%20PUBLISHER%20PATRICK.jpgCreated in June 2006 by Toyin Awesu, who I got to meet last night, this periodical is for African American males who encompass all aspects of the luxurious lifestyle. Anthony and I attempted to put some of Tweety's moves to work, since we'd just left class. ANT%20AND%20TWEETY.jpg I didn't land it so well. But we looked good trying. Ant in Ralph Lauren and me in American Chang ( americanchang.com/ ), the awesome designer I usually pick up from my favorite boutique N Harlem ( www.nharlemnewyork.com/ ).

You'll recall, American Chang nominated this blog "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" as the "Best Way to Spend Your Time" this past Christmas. PATRICK%20AND%20TWEETY4.jpgAnd our usual suspects, Mr. Raymond Green from UNeQ Magazine (www.uneqmagazine.com/) and hip hop dance expert and Tweety's contemporary Smoov (from MTV) were also in the house.  PATRICK%20AND%20ANTHONY.jpg

RIGHT ON!

CYNTHIA%20HORNER%20AND%20PATRICK.jpg As the marketplace continues to be drowning in new magazines for various demos within the urban category, I was excited the night prior to see "Right On!" editor - during my era - Cynthia Horner. As a tween and teen, I LOVED this magazine. right%20on.jpg I'd always rush to see if Diana Ross was on the cover. Lots of times, she was. And this monthly brought me so much joy as a boy growing up. (So did and do celebrity bios). PATRICK%20AND%20MISS%20ROSS.jpgThough I don't endorse it per se, the once-biting biographer of "Call Her Miss Ross", J. Randy Taraborrelli, has just released a kinder-gentler volume on my diva's life-to-present and I couldn't resist reading it and seeing how this one shows up. diana%20ross%20a%20biography.jpg It's simply called "Diana Ross: A Biography" and is reading well so far. My jury remains out - however - given what the tone and timbre of the previous bio did to 'public opinion' about Diana Ross).

PATRICK%20AND%20NICHOLE2.jpg But I digress, Ms. Horner from "Right On!" and I were attending yet another event to which we were invited by Ra-Fael Blanco (www.myspace.com/2rsentertainmentandmedia). It was a MTV VMA Viewing Party sponsored by Pepsi ( VMA.MTV.com ). I went with my "Amazing Grace" Nichole, Anthony, and Anthony's and my favorite new couple Mara (www.PepsiBlueCarpetBash.com/RSVP) and Tommie. NICHOLE%20AND%20MARA2.jpg Though we had a nice time, we were more entertained by each other's company at Mara and Tommie's gorgeous and roomy Harlem brownstone and our post-party dinner at Indochine (indochinenyc.com) than we were by Britney Spears' lackluster performance on the MTV VMA Awards ('Nuff said).  ITIKA%20PATRICK%20NICHOLE.jpg

Plus, our Ti-Ti was in town. So, we all gathered and truly enjoyed a classic and hip New York City night!  TITI%20AND%20THE%20CAB2.jpg

(And you know we had to karaoke. What can I say? It's an addiction. www.karaoke17.com ).  We too went Karaoke-ing earlier this week with our friend Delecia Sampson, who is responsible for the first set of pictures that Anthony and I took together (from New Year's Eve 2005).  She was visiting from Boston with her new beau in tow. And we enjoyed lovely brunch at Cafeteria (www.cafeteria247.com) before going into the studio.  PATRICK%20SINGING3.jpg

SPARKLE: LUNCH AND LIFE

LONNI%20MARCIA%20ANT%20PATRICK.jpgAnthony and I got to enjoy a lovely lunch recently with our good girlfriends Lonni and Marcia Pendelton. We went to Joe Allen Restaurant (www.joeallenrestaurant.com) in the heart of Restaurant Row, just across from where I used to perform lots of cabarets, "Don't Tell Mama". I thought this would be a cool spot as I once did a story on Rosie O'Donnell, who chose this spot as one of her favorites in the city (for before or after a Broadway show as it's right in the theater district). I want to shout out Marcia, who - as I've told you - does amazing work - from marketing and audience development to actual producing - in the realm of theater and arts. She is working with the 10th Anniversary of the "Reel Sisters Film Festival", which is honoring a good girlfriend of mine, Nicole Franklin with whom I've worked in NYC-TV-capacities (she as editor; me as producer), but she too carries extra-hyphenates - like I do - and is a "filmmaker" (director, producer, renaissance woman) whose stunning debut "Double Dutch Divas" received many industry prizes a few years back. She's been here in New York City for ten years and has been making things happen since I met her ten years ago at a Morehouse Manhattan Alumni Association Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast at which I sang and at which I found out that she is a great or greater-than-great granddaughter to Kemper Harold, who wrote my alma mater Morehouse's college song "Dear Old Morehouse" (www.morehouse.edu) and served for 42 years as the chair of the music department. Harreld officially established the Morehouse College Glee Club of which I was a part during my days at Morehouse and in 1911, he served as the organization's first director. REELSISTERS.jpg Also being screened is “Sparkle,” featuring Academy Award-winning songwriter/actress Irene Cara. Cara will receive the Reel Sisters Trailblazer’s Awards at Sunday’s award ceremony. And I LOVE me some Irene Cara. From "Sparkle" to "Roots: The Next Generations" to "Fame" to her singing on "Flashdance" and the repertoire of material that followed that, I have been a fan. And I even watched her "comeback" on "Hit Me Baby One More Time" which she won last summer, besting a number of 'has-beens' who came back to compete (in the name of their favorite charity) with their old hits and their take on a new hit. Great midsummer replacement TV last year!!!  irene_cara-breakdance_s.jpgFor more info on the film festival, which will take place at The Kumble Theater of the Performing Arts at Long Island University in Brooklyn, click on www.reelsisters.org .

PLUM

If I'm in town, second Saturdays in New York City usually means that I am going to hook up with my boyz at PLUM (www.myspace.com/sensualhealingny) and enjoy libations and go-go dancers to boot. ANT%20AND%20PATRICK2.jpg

This past second Saturday was no exception. Anthony and I attended and had a blast. In that we've not been in a minute, we were pleased to see friends - old and new. From our Mario, Michael, Melvin, Carl, etc. to an 'old friend' Jason, who I've not seen in a minute.  MICHAEL%20JASON%20PATRICK.jpg

He and I attended Morehouse together and it's always a pleasure to reconnect with him.

Truth be told, Ant and I have been hanging out a lot lately with the fellas. ATARPATRICKTOYCE.jpgOn the night prior, we saw our friends Theo, Trevor, Roderick, Carl at REMOTE (www.remoteloungenyc.com) which hosted a VOYEUR party of sorts.  VOYEUR%20ANTHONY3.jpg

Basically, the venue is chockful of video monitors, two-way phones, and other mechanisms that allow you to see via the 50-or-more cameras what's going on throughout the club. Additionally, you can talk to people in different parts of the club as well via the phone component. We had a lot of fun here.  THEO%20AND%20TREVOR.jpgVOYEUR%20ANTHONY4.jpg

And last Thursday, we got the chance to attend the last of SPRUNG at "Luke & Leroy" (after we rolled by "The Ritz", also a Thursday night set for us men). SPRUNG will now be at "The Shelter" ( www.clubshelter.com/ ), a bigger venue which boasts two floors with two DJs and three bars with over seven bartenders. Something for everyone. Check out www.nathanhalewilliams.com for more information.  RITZ%20WITH%20PAT%20AND%20ANT.jpg

LEDISI: LOST & FOUND!

PATRICK%20AND%20LEDDY.jpgSPRUNG, by the way, is doing an album release party for Ledisi's new album "Lost & Found", which debuted at #10 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop charts this week. Anthony and I have had a chance to get to know Ledisi and her publicist J'ai St. Laurent over the last few months. As you recall, we spent time with her after her performance at NABJ in Vegas. We joined a number of her fans - including actress Lynn Whitfield - last week at Highline Ballroom ( highlineballroom.com/ ) where she gave all she got to the sold-out audience. PATRICK%20AND%20LYNN.jpg And after my friend Scott, who works with Sheryl Lee Ralph, called me from his office to inquire how to get in touch with Ledisi (as he read my last blog entry), Ledisi is now booked to join Sheryl Lee Ralph and a host of divas (in October) for Sheryl's annual AIDS benefit "DIVAS! SIMPLY SINGING" where Ralph is scheduled to reunite with her original "Dreamgirls" castmates Loretta Devine and Jennifer Holliday... in song! Continuing to love LEDISI, please go CHECK HER NEW ALBUM OUT: (http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/product.aspx?pid=11745&fp=qtledlive.jpg By the way, that night I met three other singers who I'm told are ones to watch. I'd like to shout them out here: Russell Taylor (www.russelltaylor.net); Abby Dobson (www.myspace.com/abbydobsonmusic); and Kendra Ross ( www.myspace.com/kendrarossmusic ).

SPEAKING OF LOST AND FOUND

CAMILLE%20AND%20ANTHONY2.jpgMy good girlfriend Camille who came into New York City to plant some roots... has left the building. We all got to celebrate before she left at The Den in Harlem ( www.TheDenHarlem.com ).

Ern and Tina joined Anthony and me. TINA%20AND%20ERNEST.jpgCamille's friend Cynthia came too. I am excited at what's next for Camille. Plus, she'll be back to go through the ADVANCE course of Momentum Education (www.momentumeducation.com). You'll recall, she and my good friend Mario are recent BASIC grads of this life work. Speaking of Mario, his cousin Tajamika Paxton (daughter of "Divorce Court" judge Mablein Ephriam), is a producer on the film project "A Fat Girl's Guide to Yoga" ( www.fatgirlsguidetoyoga.com/ ). It screened (and actually was a finalist) in the New York Television/Video Festival (newyorktelevisionfestival.com ) which took place at the New World Stages Theater complex ( www.newworldstages.com/ ). In the 11th hour, Mario invited us to join he, his cousin, and her cast and crew. On-hand, the cast of "30 Rock" (NBC) came to introduce eight independent short comedy films (possible development deals). 30%20rock%20cast.jpgWe loved "Bitch", a twisted story of love under the guise of a bitchy girl who goes after a serial shoplifting hustler. We too dug "Color Me Blind" in which a college diversity group gets its first non-white member, but things don't go quite as planned at their Diversity Rally. These liberal-guilters try to do the right thing, but don't even come close. Also, "El Chisme (The Gossip)" is also a great tale of how gossips feed malicious misinformation to a naive young man about the woman he plans to marry. But our favorite happened to be the film we were there to support "A Fat Girl's Guide to Yoga", a larger, African American woman shares her too-funny struggles with yoga, which is my Anthony's favorite workout.

YOGA TODAY?

RUSSELL%20ANTHONY.jpgIronically, in lieu of accompanying Anthony to yoga class, we just met up with his yoga guru, Russell Simmons, who when I originally interviewed him a year ago, continued to reach out to me - saying "Yoga today!!!". I would learn it was a line he uses on - literally - EVERYONE. Yoga is RUSSELL and RUSSELL is yoga. Last night, he wasn't in the house to promote YOGA per se, though one of his new lines of clothing, Atman, is filled with iconography from that lifestyle. When talking about Russell Simmons-Argyleculture, he alerted me that his new gear reflects the "oldest younger guy" vs. "the youngest older guy" his designs used to serve.PATRICK%20RUSSELL.jpg Held at Phat Farm flagship in SOHO, this party brought out filmmaker/author Nelson George; Harlem-based flutist Bobbi Humphries;PATRICK%20KWAME.jpg KWAME from THE APPRENTICE; and EBONY Creative Director Harriett Cole. PATRICK%20HARRIETT.jpgThis will be Russell's new focus as the 15-year-old Phat Farm stays afloat under Kimora.

GIRLS! YOU ARE FASHION

KLS%20WITH%20ANT%20AND%20PAT.jpgSpeaking of Kimora, Anthony and I got several invites during this Fashion Week. We excitedly attended the KLS Fashion Show (http://www.kimoraleesimmons.com/). PAT%20ADRIENNE%20ANT.jpgOur friend Adrienne Stewart is on "Team Kimora" and invited us along with her friend Galen (who is a good industry friend of mine); my fellow Pentavaurate (dinner group family member) Stephanie Elam and her man Jeff. And the stars came out, too. From Ivana Trump to Evan Ross to Stacie J... my fellow journalists Harriette Cole (now at EBONY) and Walter Greene (of "Sister 2 Sister" fame) were in the house as well.

Earlier in the week, we went out to support my friend Joy Doss and her clients Jedda-Kahn and Zonkiri, two cutting-edge designers here in New York City. I had a good time learning what goes on in the mind behind Chief Executive Designer of Zonkiri John Lee. ZONKIRI%20AND%20PATRICK.jpgAnd it's always a pleasure to attend a JOY DOSS event which - in this case - was housed at "Te Casan" ( www.tecasan.com/ ), SOHO-based women's shoe boutique, featuring hand-crafted, limited edition footwear. And I ran into Yvette Hayward, founder of the African American Literary Awards Show at which I presented last year and have been asked to return this year (http://www.literaryawardshow.com/).YVETTE%20PATRICK%20JOY.jpg

"... THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RAINBOW..."

Anthony's good friend Marcos, who does an open mic at VOYAGE Restaurant every Monday (http://www.myspace.com/onemicnite). "American Idol" finalist Anwar Robinson came out to collaborate and celebrate his mother's birthday. Quite an entertaining crew of folks, including my fellow Diana Ross fan Phil Eggleston, whose brilliant version of "Ordinary People" got the crowd warmed up (and maybe even moist! He's good... and cute too!).  ANWAR%20AT%20VOYAGE.jpgAnd every Monday, Marcos is happy to present the best, raw talent around NYC. Calling all actors, musicians, singers, poets to Voyage, which is recommened by Time Out New York magazine ( www.timeout.com/newyork/ ).

MELBA%20AND%20SCOTT.jpgAfterwards, Anthony and I popped by my friend Scott Nevins' event ( www.scottnevins.com/ ) at SPLASH ( www.splashbar.com ). Known for booking the divas, Scott got Melba Moore to come and perform for the "kids". She was also promoting her new DVD: "Live in Concert" (http://www.amazon.com/Melba-Moore-Live-Concert/dp/B000PMLIWC). She can still hit and hold those notes!!!  MELBA%20MOORE.jpg

MULTI-TASKING

With all that I have going on, I must multi-task. One day as Anthony and I were here at home and planning our evening's agenda, I was reading my Diana Ross book, working both landline and cell phone while showing him something on YOUTUBE and while he was on the laptop, working on his own business along with whatever we were watching on TV. It was truly overload - so much so - Anthony got the camera and wanted to capture a bit of the frenzy-of-it-all. PATRICK%20MULTI%20TASKS2.jpgWe are aiming to slow down a bit.

ANT%20AND%20HOOKA.jpg

We've found a cute little mid-eastern spot La Kabbr (http://lighthousenews.us/restaurants/lakabbr/index.html) where we partook of that cuisine's delicacies (not exactly my favorite cuisine, but Anthony loves it!) and even partook of a "hookah", a single or multi-stemmed, often glass-based, water pipe device for smoking. Its gained fame in the Arab World, hence the offering in this restaurant, and it operates by water-filtration and indirect heat. It can be used for smoking many substances, such as herbal fruits. And we had mango. PATRICK%20AND%20HOOKA.jpgIt was a lovely, easy night... until trouble came a knocking. My "Theo" called and decided to come join us. Of course, I'm joking. We love our time with "our" Theo. And he loves his time with "his Patrick", but most importantly, "his Anthony". DSCF0908.JPG

Getting grounded and maintaining our center are key as we both are inside of many stresses and energy within this industry. Still, with our love for each other and our unstoppable connection to this journey of life (and some more attention on home), we know we will be alright.

"EFFIE AND MAGIC ARE WORKING"

lincolnheights.jpgAs I am getting into ABC Family's "Lincoln Heights" (abcfamily.go.com/lincolnheights/), I observe that the young lady who plays Effie's daughter Magic in "Dreamgirls" (Mariah L. Wilson) has a small part in the wholesome, but real and gritty, one-hour drama chronicling a large family's challenges around race, crime, death, and other real-life situations. mariah%20wilson.jpgIt's kinda' like a "Black" "7th Heaven". Meanwhile, Miss Jennifer Hudson has been named to co-star as Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie Bradshaw's assistant/secretary in the feature film "Sex & The City". I think this is a good look as it promises to be a commercial release with lots of attention. Here's hoping the part and her performance make it worth the trip. By the way, do I have Jennifer Hudson to thank for my using one of these pictures AGAIN!!!???? patrickandjenniferhudson1.jpg

THIS JUST IN

At BLOG time, it's just been announced that Kennedy Center Honors (http://www.kennedy-center.org/programs/specialevents/honors/) has selected Diana Ross to be among
this year's Kennedy Center Honorees. http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showIndividual&entitY_id=18315&source_type=A

This is GREAT and significant to me on a couple of fronts. ROSS is the BEST! But I too got to appear on this annual special in which legends are honored for their career achievements in the arts. It was 1991 and I performed with the Morehouse College Glee Club. morehouse.jpgI was selected as the spokesperson to pay tribute to Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus Composer and Conductor Robert Shaw ( www.atlantasymphony.org/abouttheaso/legacyofrobertshaw.aspx ). CONGRATS MISS ROSS!!!!!diana%20LIVE.bmp
