No worries, if you don’t “do” KARAOKE! We have you covered:

·       We’ll be creating a supper-club, open-mic scene by inviting some of New York City’s KARAOKE ALL-STARS to perform their karaoke favorites (along with me) during the first two hours.

·       For any walk-ins (or folks who may need two hours to loosen up a la the bar), we’ll have a few slots available in the third and final hour of the night.

·        ADDITIONALLY, on any given Thursday, some of our AWESOME PRO SINGER friends may pop by and bless us with a song or two.

·       Though this week will include a survey of all music, we will also schedule THEME NIGHTS i.e. MOTOWN, the DIVAS, BROADWAY, 70s FUNK, JAZZ STANDARDS, etc.

There was a night Ant and I happened upon “my karaoke pusher men” Dante and Michael – both of whom hipped me to the pastime, even in the afternoon.

Then, there was the surprise birthday party for our buddy Javier whose partner Marco invited us out to celebrate. Since this was at our regular spot One 7, we invited my “Amazing Grace” Nichole to come by and celebrate her birthday. She sang. She brought friends – including Troy and Danielle. And our mutual buddy Dawn provided us much voice and song that I’m excited to have you all hear at one of our NATIVE nights. And one night, I got to sing with Amber Dirks of KOPATECHNIC fame (www.kopatechnic.com). She’s an AWESOME DIVA and has sung with many of the greats. Her production team has done AMAZING work with many – including CeCe Peniston. One night, Greg, Khalid, Ern, Ant, and I did karaoke.After a round of cocktails with friends at the Hudson Terrace, we enjoyed a musical walk down memory lane. On that night, we got our first try-out of the New Pink Tea Cup - including the grits, catfish, potato salad, and the many familiar faces from its staff. A walk to Ern’s car inspired a familiar voice in the air. It was my friend Jensen Atwood (Wade from "Noah's Arc"). He and I always stumble into each other – no matter which city we’re in. I last bumped into him in Chicago while there on an extended assignment in the Spring, earlier this year. We had a lovely exchange before calling it a night.

ON THE AIR

So, of course, as I “sing for my supper” (or – at least – for a snack), I am taking meetings and networking feverishly to identify some good fit work inside my brand as independent personality/producer/writer. Nothing so concrete has popped up yet, but I’m operating and navigating to POSSIBILITIES only. So, even as the budget is tight, I STAND and TRUST my GOD and our UNIVERSE to have my back. My friends Maurice Jamal and Richard Pelzer – multi-media directors, producers, writers, managers, publicists, TV execs, etc. – are embarking on a new, urban LGBT network glotv (www.GloTVNetwork.com) which is premiering September 3, 2010. Coincidentally, I got an encore media impression from the Game Show Network last night. I LOVE and LIVE for ABUNDANT reminders – especially from my own testimonial pool!!!

BLACK WOMAN’S AGENDA

I get my 3^rd ESSENCE Magazine (www.essence.com) by-line in the current 40^th Anniversary issue of the popular magazine. I contributed – as reporter/researcher – to The Black Woman’s Agenda, comparing African American women from 1970 to African American women today (in a multitude of categories). Please be sure to pick it up. Meanwhile, I was super excited to bump into girlfriend Kim Coles who is busy as ever on her own agenda that promises to empower not only Black women but ALL OF US (www.openthegifts.com). I got an invite to see the taping of “The Nate Berkus Show” and Kim Coles was the guest. You’ll have to wait and see all that she talked about, but afterwards, she had Kim Coles’ G.I.F.T.S. for Ant and me :a new empowerment program that helps participants step into their authentic selves; share their unique qualities with the world; and soar into a joyful and passionate life. So, that’s GRATITUDE. INTENTION. FORGIVENESS. TRIUMPHS. SELF-LOVE. And includes FREE G.I.F.T.S eBook, Newsletter, blog, podcasts, events, teleclasses, Kim’s Inner Circle Club, and more! Our catch-up with Kim Coles took place at Moda Restaurant in the city and - as always - was chockful of laughter and great sharing. Since on a spot level, I’ve worked with Nate over the last decade (as a freelance field producer), he received me warmly in front of his studio audience. Too, it was great to see other friends who work for the show - including "My Ivory" (the “other” Nathaniel) and my Reeny (with whom I worked on “Monica: Still Standing” and “Frankie & Neffe” in Atlanta and L.A.). Ant and his work buddies Lorraine, Kemar, and Alia were our dates. Afterwards, we enjoyed a quick lunch at Hudson Eatery.

KEM

Another KIM (spelled KEM) celebrated something this past week. Detroit’s-own Kem’s third album INTIMACY came out. We went to his private CD release party at Tillman’s. Friends Devon Christopher (BLEU Magazine); Bevy Smith; Jamie Foster Brown (Sister 2 Sister); Elise Finch (CBS Meteorologist); were in the house. And of course, label prez Sylvia Rhone was the host with the most. Afterwards, did a little rooftop action at Fashion 26: A Wyndham Hotel. My Morehouse buddy Eddie reminds me that I sang KEM’s “You Are” at his wedding.

BREAKING BREAD

The GREAT thing about the SUMMER… and my friends, in particular: WE LOVE TO EAT! And THEY LOVE TO ENTERTAIN! And HARLEM is usually the backdrop. And though these are hard times for many, it’s WONDERFUL to BATHE in the FELLOWSHIP of friends. This past Saturday, friends Robin & Zach hosted a well-appointed brunch at their Harlem pad. Tasty spread of shrimp, cheese grits, Caesar salad, champagne, and a great lemonade w/brown sugar in the mix. That night, another meal (of a handful in the last couple of weeks) at Sidra’s place. It was neighborhood pizza & “Mahogany” on this particular night. On another evening, it was another pizza place & watching “Real Housewives of D.C.” in which our friends Paul Wharton, Ted Gibson, and Jason Backe are featured. But we’ve also done African cuisine; West Indian; and her home-spun pastas and veggies. One night, we had our Tommie (Mara's hubby) pop down to join us. On another night, my friend Kevin (Moochie) was in the house. One recent night, my nephew came by as he too is a Harlem resident now. He and his roommate Harrison allowed us to crash one night as they hosted a dinner party. This, since he wanted to see my dear friend Tata. She’d invited Ant and me to join her for the Harlem Week Street Festival. Her company had a booth there. We ran into buddies Will; Tommie; Jamar; Nina; Seitu; Dwayne; KiKi; and our favorite City Gym Boys. Some of the fellows were out - selling the fitness company's calendars which benefit the mentoring of young men and women on the lifelong benefits of fitness and exercise (www.citygymboys.com).  My buddy Natalie was promoting the upcoming Broadway revival “Driving Miss Daisy” – starring James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave. And this was but a second day of hanging with our friend Will. He invited Tommie, Ant, and me up for poolside fellowship and dinner at his Nyack, NY pad. Like Will, another favorite DP James Curry (who shot some of our pilot project) was in attendance with his lovely wife Lisa in tow. We ended up at Tarantella for pizza. Since last I updated, I had a business dinner with dear and old friend Zabrina (BET PR) and her friend Eric, who is a hair stylist extraordinaire - including clients like Carol's Daughter. We ate at Delta Grill. Also, stumbled into our buddies Melvin and Derrick in the streets of NYC en route home. I LOVE NEW YORK for that! I also happened upon old friend Steve Van Patten who is making his mark in the the Vampire Novel literary genre. He's published two volumes of Brookwater's Curse with one more on the way. CHECK HIM OUT!

THE FABULOUS MS. JO THOMPSON & SON!

The Metropolitan Room was the place to be last night for the FABULOUS MS. JO THOMPSON's tribute to LENA HORNE! (My buddy Gregory Generet has also been performing there over the last month). You recall, I mentioned my dear friend and NABJ brother, Greg Dunmore, is the son and manager of jazz vocalist and pianist Jo Thompson. Her set was called the “Lena Horne Salute  - THANK YOU LENA!!!” (Conceived by Greg himself). And it was Jo Thompson with the JC Heard Orchestra. The elegant set was directed by Walt Szymanski. Additionally, this special event will mark the official CD Release of “Jo Thompson: Forever Fabulous!!!” (with the JC Heard Orchestra directed by Walt Szymanski) on the Jazz Jewels Digital Label (www.jazzjewels.tv/jothompsonepk.html). In addition to all of my favorites, Jo did a FABULOUS finale reading of “Believe in Yourself” as inspired by Lena Horne from the cult classic film “The Wiz”. Extra shout out to Greg. You know, we just got back from San Diego. The NABJ A&E Task Force honored JET Magazine’s Clarence Waldron with our 2010 Legacy Award. Greg – Co-Chair of the task force (which I Chair) – produced (in cooperation with Pulse Beat TV – www.pulsebeat.tv) a wonderful tribute to Clarence – including remarks from Miss Aretha Franklin; Miss Nancy Wilson; Miss Dionne Warwick; Brandy; India.Arie; and a host of others. EXTRAVAGANZA ELEGANZA!

So, this past weekend, I got to do a couple of roll-bys: LATEX BALL @ Roseland Ballroom (AIDS benefit put on by the GMHC). We saw GREAT FACE & the faces of friends Derrick, Toyce, and RU DRAG RACE DIVA BeBe Zahara Benet (who is so SWEET & FABULOUS!). Then, we went to SECRET to see our buddy Demarco Majors who celebrated his birthday. He was so happy that we came. And it was great to see friends Patrik-Ian Polk; Seitu; and a host of our other buddies we’ve been seeing a lot here in the summer months. I LOVE IT! Patrik (Creator of “Noah’s Arc”) – in fact – attended our buddy Nathan Hale Williams’ set at NYC’s ROAM. This evening was also the backdrop for our friend Ra-Fael Blanco’s birthday celebration. Our Teaneck, NJ-buddy Robert attended with us. And Momentum buddy Bariek was in the house as well. We also got some FAB BEACH TIME in. It brought The Pines on Fire Island; a lovely beach house; relaxation; and lots of laughs amongst friends – including Ern. After a great day of fun in the sun, we went to girlfriend Cindy and her husband-to-be John’s engagement party at Le Souk. Great food! Great people! And a BIG SNAKE!

P.S. FELA!

So my dear friend Marcia Pendelton (www.walktallgirlproductions.com) who works marketing and audience for mostly all of Broadway's big shows alerted me that FELA! is welcoming Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum recording artist Patti LaBelle to its cast on Tuesday, September 14. She will take over the role of Fela’s mother (Funmilayo Anikulapo-Kuti) through Sunday, January 2, 2011, when the show will play its final scheduled performance. Tony Award-winner Lillias White (who received a 2010 Tony Nomination for her performance in this production) will play her final performance on September 12. Fela! received three 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Choreography, Best Costume Design and Best Sound Design. It is currently playing at Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre (230 West 49th Street) where it opened to rave reviews on November 23. FATHER’S DAY (AND A MOTHER)

When last I wrote you, it was FATHER’S DAY weekend. I was asked to be a guest on Michael Eric Dyson’s new radio show: http://dysonshow.org/?p=1721. It was a MEN’S SUMMIT! Please take a listen between 13:46-31:27. On the day itself, my DAD called to say he received my basket of healthy gourmet goodies - a blend of savory and sweet. He – in turn – sent a lovely note and this hard copy picture of my siblings and me with our late mom Queen Elizabeth Bellinger Riley. I thought this was from my birthplace Tokyo, Japan (circa '70s) but my sister has reminded me that it was from when we were stationed in California soon thereafter.. Since her passing in July of 1994, I’ve kept few pictures of her in my personal collection. At the time, it was just too painful. Here 16 years later, I still miss her so. But there are too many fond memories that have shaped me to be who I am today. So, this was quite a lovely THANK YOU from my father! Amidst FATHER’S DAY, Ant and I went to join my girlfriend Sidra who invited us to enjoy an easy, breezy Sunday in Harlem (Morningside Park, to be exact) – for house music and lots of fellowship. Ran into many buddies – including Kevin "Moochie" Freeman (Kevin's “Amazing Grace” Erika Munro Kennerly also popped by); Chenoa Maxwell; Tai Beauchamp, Stacey J, her daughter Riley, and Riley’s father; and our girl Bevy Smith.

PRINCE & ELIZABETH

At the Harlem event, I ran into Dave Rowan (pink shoes). He invited Ant, my Morehouse brother Michael Bryant, and me out to celebrate all things Prince and Elizabeth (www.princeandelizabeth.com). The evening included a tour of the retail space (Prince of SOHO); the showroom space (The SHOWROOM); and a preview of Tacombi Taco Stand. Afterwards, we did a swim by our Nathan Hale Williams' SPLASH set. Prior to our Prince and Elizabeth moment, Michael and I met up at nearby BarBossa to discuss future business possibilities.

PRIDE IN BLEU

As PRIDE festivities kicked in, my friend Ra-Fael Blanco invited us to SOHO’s BO CONCEPTS store to celebrate the 4th anniversary of our beloved BLEU Magazine (www.BLEULIFE.com). Many were in the house – including: dearest friends Marqice, Jason, Marlynn, Theo, and Trevor - all celebrating DeVon Christopher's labor of love; Derrick Briggs; Jamar and Ryan; Maurice Jamal; Demarco Majors; Seven; our Hal; and on and on I could go. And recording artist and actress Teyana Taylor was host with the most for the night. Afterwards, a drive by Desire and Chi-Chi’s in the Village. Derrick Bell doubles as bartender and artist.

MJ R.I.P.

Soon came the 1^st anniversary of Michael Jackson’s passing. About 3 minutes into this clip, hear and see Miss Ross' MJ Tribute. It is from her summer tour which received RAVES! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDnoQLvuh_s Last year, I was in the throes of field and story producing reality TV for Dubose Entertainment (in L.A. and then Atlanta). The team with whom I worked included my “Amazing Grace” Nichole and Miss Shareen – both of whom credit “The Nate Berkus Show” as their new employer. As they are busy working on the start-up, they did honor me by letting me get a quick glimpse of them at Copper Smith’s after they clocked out for the weekend. New friend Lorna joined us as well. Then, Ant and I took a meeting at Native with its owner Brian (Stay tuned for a night in which I’ll be hosting a special evening of karaoke. You won’t want to miss it!). Then, we did “Leaving Neverland”, a multi-media tribute to Michael Jackson. It was created by our friend George Faison (Tony-award winning choreographer for “The Wiz” and gracious participant in and generous donor - of space - for the Black History Month campaign I helped produce for BET). And singing diva sister friend Toni Seawright collaborated with him. And my Morehouse brother Khalid worked on the production. Also, Ashford & Simpson were in the house. Since I sang “The Boss” to them back in December… and since Miss Ross is now opening her current show with the hit tune, I wanted to make sure they knew. SMILE! My girl Deborah Gregory was one of the narrators of the script. It was written by Quincy Troupe. His wife Margaret is a famous art curator and collector.  From there, we enjoyed a hang in Harlem – including Amy Ruth. Always great to see my performer friends - whether they/we are on the stage or just supporting others to do their work.

PRIDE COMES TO HARLEM!

On last Saturday, there was PRIDE in HARLEM. Ant and I rolled through before heading to see ‘RACE’ on Broadway care of our beloved Marcia Pendelton. Nichole and Khalid joined us. Ran into my friend Alicia Evans who is a publicist extraordinaire and a singer with whom I've shared a stage or two - including the holiday party for the Black Public Relations Society some years ago (She was the President and booked me to entertain the troops with Christmas songs and many-a-pop-standard). This is Ebony Jo-Ann - also at RACE. She is featured in the new film "The Grown Ups". Go check her out! Afterwards, we joined our Momentum buddies Ruben, Raoul, Ruben's mom Cookie; and Liz for Ruben BDAY BBQ in Washington Heights followed by a roll through No Parking. Then, the next day, we went to the PRIDE parade. We got a bite at COWGIRL with our girl Andrea, her girls, and Ant’s cousin Chantay. Plus, we ran into many friends along the way.

VISIBLE LIVES

Last week, I got the chance to put my acting cap on and participate in a table read for an upcoming romantic comedy that a dear friend is producing. It went well. Here, the rest of the table-read cast celebrate a great session at Native in Harlem.

A few days later, film adaptations were on the mind of many who attended the book signing for “Visible Lives: Three Stories in Tribute to E. LYNN HARRIS”.

My dear friends Terrance Dean (not in attendance on this night), James Earl Hardy, and Stanley Bennett Clay have homaged E. LYNN HARRIS with their three sizzling novellas.

James and Stanley read from their selections and Miss Tina Andrews (who wrote 'Sally Hemmings' telescript and "Why Do Fools Fall In Love") hosted the book signing/reading event at Barnes & Noble on 82nd and Broadway.

Charlie T (center) is a renowned photographer and creator of Stamford, CT exhibit "Just As We Are" which is now being prepped for a London debut. She shot Ant and me a couple of years ago (www.charlietphotography.net/portfolios.htm and www.justasweare.org). We are featured in her photo exhibit. Afterwards, got to enjoy a lovely meal of pasta, tuna, and wine at my Sid's new Harlem digs. En route, we stumbled into artist Hani Shihada (on Broadway and 91st street - www.HaniSideWalkArt.com).

 NABJ

In addition to chasing checks for spot work I’ve recently done, I am open to some new projects (Whatcha got? Any good-fit fare? Gotta keep that revenue streaming). SOS! But in the meantime, I am not twiddling my thumbs as my mostly volunteer efforts as Chair of the NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force have me on back-to-back conference calls – in preps for our San Diego convention at the end of July. It’s gonna be a BLAST (if I can put my pennies together to actually be there. UGH! This, as it too will be good for networking and attracting more good-fit work). Michael K. Watts and I are co-producing the NABJ Opening (featuring my buddy DR. OZ and gospel great Donnie McClurkin); Boris Kodjoe is coming to promote his new NBC show “Undercovers”; and so much more that we are still aiming to greenlight (ahem, time will reveal...). Stay tuned. NABJ is always a blast! (www.nabj.org). One highlight: “The Young & The Restless” is powering our NABJ A&E Task Force reception. The highest-rated daytime drama on American television joins one of NABJ’s top task forces for an evening that promises sparkling synergies and star power. This reception will take time to salute the iconic, multi-Emmy-award-winning “The Young & The Restless” which has charmed its audiences with the best soap operas have to offer since March 26, 1973. For nearly 40 years, Y&R has stood firmly inside a commitment to diversity with its cast and storylines. Y&R stars Kristoff St. John (“Neil Winters”); Darius McCrary (“Malcolm Winters”); and the legendary Jeanne Cooper (Y&R's ever-youthful matriarch “Katherine Chancellor”) will attend this NABJ A&E Task Force’s signature event. These beloved and revered co-stars will share great reflections and updates on the hit soap opera. The characters are like family members i.e. Drucilla RIP (I got to interview her in Vegas at NABJ a couple of years ago); Neil; Lily; Malcolm; Olivia; etc. - just a few of the key players on the show who help to underscore that rare commitment to diversity in the soap world (My brother, my nephew, and I stand on our late mom's (nephew's grandmother's) shoulders with this pass-time. LOL!). Additionally, the NABJ A&E Task Force LEGACY Award will be presented to JET Magazine’s own Clarence Waldron. The creation of the "LEGACY AWARD" - first presented in 1997 at Chicago's NABJ - is designed to acknowledge our unsung (perhaps less heralded) crop of A&E journalists who have spent substantive careers chronicling the often-celebrated and high-profile lives and careers of others. Clarence - known to some as 'the Dean of the African American entertainment journalists' - joins the company of a special group - including the late John H. Johnson and EBONY's former Managing Editor Lynn Norment, also an active member of the NABJ A&E Task Force. Additionally, we've honored such noteworthy journalists as USA Today’s music critic Steve Jones (pictured); the Michigan Chronicle's Rita Griffin (first journalist to interview Diana Ross & The Supremes and their many fellow MOTOWN mates in Detroit -before they became international icons); and David Earl Jackson of Memphis' Tri-State Defender.

STATE OF INDEPENDENCE

This past Happy 4^th of July weekend provided lots of relaxation - including a great cookout at one of the homes of Ant's extended Brooklyn family. Ern joined us. A little work. Actually, went to Wal Mart to grocery shop. GASP! And Ern had us over for a seafood fest a la shrimp/catfish/hush-puppies/baked-fries(with rosemary and other seasonings). And daiquiries. Also, it was great to see friends Sid, Candice, Mara, Tommie, and others over the last few days.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MKW

So all of my peers are turning 40. How can that be? Perhaps because – in November of this year – I will turn 40. Many are being low-key about it. My Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts did it up – including Ammos Greek Seafood Restaurant in East Midtown - a FAB backdrop to ring MKW into his "NEW DAY"! Also, via FACEBOOK, Michael did “40 Days to 40 Years” in which he counted down 40 days leading up to his 40th Birthday with a new photo uploaded each day - tracing his evolution from birth to age 40. And though I’ve known him since I was 17, his picture #38 honored our friendship. Read on:

40th Photo #38: When my best friend Patrick Riley and I pursued careers in journalism while at Morehouse, we had no idea where our paths would lead us. We supported each other professionally and personally, and our career paths would cross a few times: his leaving FOX 5 Atlanta to move to New York caused a job opportunity for me at FOX 5; when I moved to New York, we collaborated on freelance projects between jobs. Our most significant collaboration has been producing major events for the National Association of Black Journalists for the past several years. Here we are posing during the convention in Indianapolis. We are a team, and our friendship is priceless.

NEW FRONTIER

A few weeks back, my nephew graduated from ‘our’ alma mater Morehouse College in Atlanta. A few days after that, he and his roommate Harrison came up to find their new digs as they both have snagged post-college gigs in NYC. I pulled from my repository to help them secure options of which they went with one of them… in Harlem. We worked up an appetite on both days – going to Amy Ruth the first day and Dinosaur (also in Harlem) on the next day (with their fellow college mate Chris).

DIANA IN CHICAGO

DIANA ROSS led me back to Chicago. After I’d been there for four or so weeks on that special project, I wasn’t pining to be back there. But when friend Sally Lou snagged tix to take my girls  Itika, Jakki, and me to the show, I made it my business to be there. I flew into Midway Chicago where – as I waited on Chicago Carl to pick me up – I ran into DC-based singer Easy Evans about whom I’ve written in my blog (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2010/3/24/nothing.html). We'd never met but knew each other’s faces via the blog. Chicago Carl took me to Leona's for a lunch of Italian (lasagna, pizza, wings, etc.). I then popped by Jessie Dean where Carl is a hairstylist to see all the ladies there. Then, Itika and Jakki scooped me up and we went to meet up with Sally Lou at The Wit's rooftop (for cocktails) before show time. In a nutshell, DIANA was FABULOUS (again). The show was SOLD OUT! CHICAGO LOVES DIANA! And DIANA SHOWS SHE LOVES CHICAGO! Afterwards Sally Lou, Itika, and I had a quick nightcap at Jbar which was hosting a “Sex & The City 2” party. From there, I went to Morehouse BFF Eddie's place for a good night's sleep. When I woke up the next morning (before he took me to the airport), Eddie performed a special send-off gift: a recital of the music he's been learning as he takes piano lessons. Keep doing it, Eddie!

BACK IN NYC: SILK ELECTRIC

Got the news that Gary Coleman had passed away before I got back to NYC. Sad to hear, especially the circumstances surrounding the troubled star’s life since he gained success in the late ‘70s, asking: "WHAT 'CHU TALKIN' BOUT, WILLIS?" R.I.P. GARY...! You brought LOTS of LAUGHTER our way. GREAT LEGACY! Once back in NYC, I met up with Ant, our buddy Theo, Ant's work friend Kemar for dinner at Vinyl (with fab album-cover menus - including Diana's "Silk Electric" (album with "Muscles") and another favorite Culture Club's "Colour By Numbers". They even had my DIANA’s “Bob Mackie original” doll in a display case on the stairway. Great to hang out with the fellows. And great to be back with Ant, though I'd only been gone for a day. From there, a nightcap at DESIRE in the Village... and a late-night bite at the Rt. 4 DINER in NJ.

SEX & THE CITY 2

Ern and I have been big "Sex & The City 2" fans since the beginning. We all went to see the first one a few years back. Of course, there was lots of blitz this go around! Some find that the sequel didn’t meet expectations. My line: “It was good enough, if just too much.” My NABJ sister friend (and proud mother of a Spelmanite Erin) Bonnie Newman Davis asked me to comment in her latest piece for The Grio (http://www.thegrio.com/entertainment/lack-of-diversity-doesnt-diminish-sex-and-the-city-appeal.php). I had more to say than was used in the piece – including these points when asked if I thought the “Sex & The City” franchises lack of diversity diminished its appeal – most pointedly to African American women. Some of my other thoughts include:

1.” Black women in pop culture have historically LOVED to dress up, get together, and enjoy something on the big or small screen that reflects their fantasies and sometimes their realities. If not "Mahogany", "Girlfriends", or "Waiting to Exhale" which - as Black pop vehicles - are few and far between, what else is there to fellowship around but a phenomenon like "Sex & The City" and its much-anticipated sequel? This, since the economic playing field between black women and white women has leveled off (if just a bit - even in this recession). So, Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik aren't just for Carrie Bradshaw anymore.”

2. “Black women DID carry "Sex & The City". It's called "Girlfriends". And though Joan Carol Clayton may have borrowed some of her Christian Louboutins from her portraying actress Tracee Ellis Ross' closet (or perhaps Tracee's mom Diana), this show was as much appointment television for many Black women (and men) as "Sex & The City”".

3.  "The premise of "Sex & The City" is a group of white woman dealing with the shortage of men in New York City. Black women have been experiencing this drought of Black men for years. So, misery loves company, especially when it is sporting haute couture and sipping on a Cosmopolitan."

4. ""Let's Talk About Pep" explored the "Sex & The City" dynamic with women of color. And it did well in the reality genre which is popular right now. So, it's a universal epidemic with which most women identify."

5. "I do find it fascinating that Black women - for the most part - haven't been turned off by the lack of diversity and its weak attempts at incorporating color into the mix i.e. Blair Underwood (the show); Jennifer Hudson (the movie); etc. (but likely no etc.)"

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND MCCAFES

FUN TIMES at our girlfriend Danielle and her husband Bernard's place in Metutchen, NJ. We karaoke’d all day long. Then, all night long. I performed Debarge’s “All This Love”. Also, the Kate Bush version of “This Woman’s Work”. Ant and I did our favorites. Ern even joined me on "Fame". A few days later, I popped by one of NYC's new McCafes. Not just to grab a #1. But I was invited by host and friend Bevy Smith (and buddies Tracy Anderson & Iman Jefferson). This was an event to promote McDonald's remix on its menu and select locations. Industry friends Karu Daniels & Marcia Cole were also in the house as well as BET talent Alesha Renee. 3 McFrappes, 1 McSmoothy, and a 3-way sampling of McAngus Wraps later, I joined Ant & his Denver buddy Justin for sushi. We ran into American Idol's Andrew Garcia. You'll recall, he did the unplugged version of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up". He'll be on the tour this summer. NICE GUY!

SHOOTING PILOT

Beyond the spot revenue projects, I just wrapped shooting a pilot over two days - one in Philly; the other in NYC. The Philadelphia shoot took place at Aci Nae Boutique (http://acinae.com/). What gratitude for some great friends (all of whom donated their services i.e. James, Andrea, Max, Valee, Ant, et al.). It was a long, fulfilling day of making (something) happen. Then, we shot phase two a few days later. BIG THANKS to my friends Ted Gibson; Jason Backe; Dr. Shirley Madhere; and the host of many - including my friends who donated their time/resources and/or double'd as our production crew; models; stylists/make-up artists; etc. to make Day 2 of this pilot I'm hosting a REALITY. ALSO, CONGRATS to Ted on his new partnership with The American Association of Cosmetology School: 'Beauty Changes Lives'. (STAY TUNED for more on that and 'REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DC's Mary Amons - who was in the house with her BFF on the show, our Jason Backe, celebrity colorist for the stars.)Now, we are identifying a pro bono editor before we begin taking pitch meetings and also going viral to see what synergies we can create. Stay tuned.And afterwards, we celebrated. Cocktails. Food. Karaoke. And more karaoke. And more karaoke. 

RAVE REVIEWS

Last weekend, Ant & I joined my boy Caleb at The Hudson Hotel in the city. We were joined by CC; Ant's girlfriend Manivone; and her cousin Vilay. We did some more dancing downtown before going to Cafeteria for breakfast. The sun was up and at 'em when we got home on this particular day. But it didn’t stop us from heading out to New Rochelle for a lovely summer dinner gathering at my Amazing Grace Nichole’s home. Great to hang with Cynthia, cousin Jeffrey, Seattle friend Patrick, Danielle, Melony, and more (missed CJ). This, before Ant & I went to see "The Lion King" on Broadway (again). Then, we went to Stone Rose Lounge in the Time Warner Center. It is there where we celebrated our girlfriend Katrina's birthday. Happy Birthday, Kat! Caleb joined us here as well. Then, Bar Sepia in Brooklyn to connect to former journalism buddy Errol followed by L.A. and Denver's own Pablo at another BK spot or two in Williamsburgh.  

THANKS AND FELLOWSHIP

So, Manivone invited us to her Brooklyn digs to enjoy some amazing FOH (broth, noodles, thinly-sliced beef, shrimp, etc.) as prepared by her Denver-based cousin Villay (who has been helping us shoot this pilot). The Denver BK gang was in the house! And then, we returned the favor to Villay who has been itching for some soul food since she got here. So, Amy Ruth it was (even though we wanted to all try out The Famous - NEW - Pink Tea Cup, which opened this week). Afterwards we joined buddy Brian at Native where we ran into many interesting folks - including DJ Malcolm Jackson; my NABJ friend/Great great granddaughter of Madame CJ Walker, A'Lelia Bundles (who had some good info to share with Ant and me about Miss Jessie's Original (http://www.missjessies.com/) and a great period fashion exhibit at the Museum of the City of NY (www.mcny.org)); Winter Antiques Show's Eula C. Johnson who shared awesome tales of her long friendship with Civil Rights Activist Bayard Rustin who took a backseat as he orchestrated much of the movement on behalf of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and so many more (He organized The March on Washington, for example). This, because he was gay. Always out and unapologetic. But smart enough to know that - at that time - his orientation may have confused the efforts that were being made to gain civil rights for Black people. I've studied Bayard Rustin and consider him a personal hero. Luis Andrade; and more. Then, buddy Candice Harper threw a summer soiree at her new Harlem digs. I took the time to pose with the Fiercee Award that she designed (She's now prop stylist for 'Wendy'). Good times with friends - old and new, eating well; great conversation; and 'Mahogany' in the background (on TV ONE).

TONY AWARDS & BLACK 2: BROADWAY

Tony Awards splendor in NYC... and Alyson Williams was among the singers who performed at the Black 2: Broadway Tony Awards viewing party program which I had the privilege to script!!! In the 11th hour, I got an invite to go to the Tony Awards at Radio City (Thanks Carl), but I stuck to my plans to attend the Black 2:Broadway viewing party at G Uptown in Harlem including tributes (that I wrote) to: Broadway classic "Sophisticated Ladies"; my friend Ken Roberson (choreographer-director extraordinaire); and AUDELCO. Hosts included "Passing Strange" star Coleman Domingo. Also, friend/Broadway star Adrian Bailey co-hosted. And it was good to see L.A. girlfriend Lauren Tobin who - you'll recall - was one of my hosts last year in Los Angeles while I was there on an extended project ("Monica: Still Standing"). She is in town with client Coleman Domingo, who Ant and I just LOVE from our Broadway favorite "Passing Strange". And one of his castmates, Tony-nominated De'Adre Aziza joined him on this special night.Also, Lauren was there with another client The National Newspaper Publishers Association - an event to which she'd invite me that was scheduled later in the week. More on that later. NYC publicist Gwen Quinn; my Karu Daniels and Bridget Bland; Stephen Beasley (Vocalist in The sbP - a group that's doing great things this summer: www.sonicbids.com/thesbp and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4BSCV-DEWw&feature=youtube_gdata); and many more. Miss Kimberly Nichole performed as well. Love her (www.kimberlynichole.com). She is managed by my friend Anshia who made possible an opportunity for me to work with Mary J. Blige. Stay tuned for those details later in this writing. But also: Kimberly Nichole got to perform for "Ashford & Simpson" back in November. And so did I. Earlier, good to hang out with Theo and Victoria at VINYL for brunch. Victoria does brows and more in Beverly Hills at Anastasia… and hosted Ant and me a time or two last summer when I was working in L.A. Always good to see her!

ARETHA RETURNS TO THE APOLLO

Apollo Theater's charity benefit and after-party was a blast. Jamie Foxx hosted. Angela Bassett & Leslie Uggams did a great tribute to Lena Horne (w/'Lena' music director Linda Twine); Chris Tucker and Floetry's Marsha Ambrosia ("Butterflies") on MJ Tribute; Danny Glover; Estelle; & Sharon Jones;  and Donnie McClurkin. And so many great friends after - including NBC 4's David Ushery ("The Debrief"); his wife Isabel; VH1 senior news correspondent Janell Snowden; Malik Yoba; and a host of others. FUN NIGHT! The next day proved a social whirlwind. There was the NYC Pride event at City Hall (hosted by Wendy Williams). We attended with Charlie T; friend Andrea; and others. Afterwards, Mary J. Blige/Catherine Malandrino fashion show at MoMA. Great to see many friends there -including stylists Tai Beauchamp and June Ambrose; Then, debut of Richard Harris Inc. and re-launch of American Chang - all by my favorite designer R. Scott French who I have known for a few years now. American Chang – in fact – gave my blog “A Day in the Life of Riley: pop culture & possibilities” its “Golden Poodle Award” as “The Best Way To Spend A Lazy Afternoon” (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2006/12/22/wake-up-and-dream.html).And Ant has continued to pull from their respective collections over the years - for my TV/public appearances and for everyday looks. I LOVE R. Scott French and now the new line Richard Harris. Plus, my friend Mykel C. Smith of Mykel C. Smith Creative created the night while other friend Ron Smith ensured I was in the house (After set at Hotel AKA). And Ant made sure to pull some pieces from the new line for me to try on as we will soon be securing updates to my wardrobe.

KELLY ROWLAND AND A PARADE OF STARS

Another fun night (after a hard day of work): KELLY ROWLAND listening set at HUDSON Hotel (www.kellyrowland.com). Ant couldn't make it as he had a quick trip to Denver to make. But my girl Andrea joined me. Plus, the burden of proof was mine as Ant has a pic with Beyonce (from when he took me to Manila for my birthday to see her); Kelly (from an event he attended last year in NYC while I was in LA); and Michelle (from her opening night in Broadway's "Chicago").And he has Letoya Luckett.  I - on the other hand - have Beyonce (of course); Michelle (of course); and Letoya (from the pre-DC3 line-up). Now, I love Ms. Luckett, but I knew I wasn't going to stop until I got my KELLY pic. And now, I'm complete (unless I'm going to go on a search for LaTavia (though it's worth noting that I've yet to get my PIX with DIANA, MARY, nor CINDY nor LYNDA nor SHERRI and the other rotating SUPREMES memebers. MARY? MISS ROSS? LOL!).GAYLE KING interviewed her on the new UNIVERSAL-MOTOWN project of which we heard 5 tunes. Also in the house: my Bevy Smith, Marlynn Snyder; Shia; Star Jones; Patrik-Ian Polk; etc. After, Andrea and I joined Jacque Reid at Time Warner Center for NABJ event. Great to see my NABJ peeps – including President Kathy Times; my mentor Darius Walker; and many more. It is an EXCITING time for NABJ (www.nabj.org) as San Diego is being decked out as the backdrop for our upcoming convention at the end of July. I Chair the NABJ A&E Task Force and we have some exciting programming ahead - from professional development panels, like "Reality TV: Is This Where The Jobs Are?" to "Writing Scripts for TV - Primetime Sitcoms and Dramas" to a special reception; TV & film previews; etc. And Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts and I are co-producing an opening event for the convention that includes an opening plenary featuring DR. OZ. Stay tuned for more info on that... or click on www.nabj.org. From the NABJ mixer(s), Andrea and I transitioned to Tori Spelling book party. She’s so SWEET! I chatted her up a little about her ‘gay icon’ status. She talked to me about her new book "Uncharted TerriTORI," her third book, which is outselling her second book after just two days. GO TORI! And in the house: Village People’s first cowboy Randy Jones; and Little House on the Prairie’s Alison Arngrim who too has a memoir that includes tales of her days as Nellie Oleson. It’s titled “Confessions Of A Prairie Bitch”.

MEN’S SUMMIT

FFAWN: BEING THE DIFFERENCE

My work in helping produce the script and evening for Mary J. Blige’s FFAWN went very well – to the tune of $150,000 (approximately). The prior picture shows me with FFAWN's Anshia (who too manages the aforementioned Kimberly Nichole). Cipriani was the elegant, well-appointed backdrop. And according to guest and social networking buddy Lynn Whitfield, “This event ran smoothly… and was well-paced! GREAT JOB!” Her words. THANKS LYNN! Others in the house: Mary J (though the pic above is a file pic from a listening party she hosted a year and change ago); hosts Deborah Roberts; Taraji P. Henson; and Idris Elba (and presenters Queen Latifah, etc.) – all of whom married their talents to my words and created a really fun night. Plus, I got to see many old friends and associates – including Chemene (‘Today’); Quon (BET); Tai; Eunice; and many others. I got to meet Melanie Fiona as well. LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

I got some great chat time with Berry Gordy.

He was honored at the first annual Legacy of Excellence awards per the National Newspaper Publishers Association of which former Savannah mayor (first Black)/publisher of Black paper The Herald Floyd Adams is a member.

 I also went to middle and high school with his daugther Khristi. And former Mayor Adams was in my father's wedding back in 1996 (while Mayor).

 It was really cool to see a Savannah icon in NYC. When we posed for this picture, he was wrapping up a chat with former NYC Mayor David Dinkens (The Big Apple's First Black Mayor... and only to date, I think).

 My Sidra accompanied me to the dinner which was put on – in varying roles – by my L.A. friend Lauren Tobin; “Monica: Still Standing” AD and buddy Shannon Love; and host/journalist Michelle Miller.

Afterwards, friend of mutual friends Tichina Arnold – a total joy – invited Sid and me to join she and friends at Woo Lae Oak Restaurant (creative Korean cuisine) in SOHO.

We then invited her to join us at my girl Anshia’s client Kimberly Nichole’s Joe’s Pub show.

Our Kevin-Anthony (from Black 2: Broadway was - of course - in the house).

Kimberly Nichole gave full-out DRAMA! But she followed her fab entrance and extremely intense, opening songs with some awesome material from her project: "The Yellow Brick Journey” (Now re-released and expanded as “YBJ Reloaded”).

She too covered MJ’s “Dirty Diana” and Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”. Ashford & Simpson were in the house. And Tichina truly enjoyed Kimberly Nichole which means a lot since Tichina can blow the roof off of any and every venue in which I've seen her. Actually, she is going to be doing more singing in L.A. - so stay tuned. Then, Tichina asked us to join her at Griffin Lounge in the Meatpacking District. And VOILA! Another GREAT NIGHT!

LAST SUPPER

Oh! And you know that Spicy Chick-Fil-A sandwich is out! Ant, Ern, and I tried it out! I love ALL THINGS CHICK-FIL-A! Though I am SPICY intolerant, I may have to suffer periodically as it's quite tasty! BON APPETIT!

Well, I’m taking more and more meetings. So, something is bound to pop up as my WHAT'S NEXT goes. Meanwhile, I'm treading lightly in the spending department but no less enjoying what life has to offer.            

Sometimes spot work pops up that’s less about revenue and more about using my talents (as gifts) or building and/or maintaining relationships.

I am contributing my gift for writing the scripted word to the “6th Annual Black 2: Broadway Celebrates the Tony Awards”. This is an EXCITING year in which many folks of color are nominated for The Tony Award– including Denzel Washington and Viola Davis (for “Fences”); Lillias White, one of 11 nominations for “Fela”; and David Alan Grier for “RACE”. Along with these nominations for the 64th Annual Tony Awards, this year’s special Black 2: Broadway event is co-hosted by Adrian Bailey & Coleman Domingo who Ant and I got to know during his run in Broadway’s “Passing Strange”.

The event I’m working on with Kevin-Anthony is honoring the Broadway Production of “Sophisticated Ladies” along with my friend, Choreographer Kenneth Roberson & “The AUDELCO Organization”. Both will be receiving our Vanguard Award for their contributions & excellence in uplifting & supporting our theater community of color and beyond. The night will round out with the outstanding talents of Ty Stephens, Alyson Williams, Kimberly Nicole just to name a few.

Speaking of MISS ROSS, she performed this past week at a SOLD OUT Radio City Music Hall. And as you know, I’d been COUNTING DOWN to the moment. And what a MAGICAL MOMENT it was. The day started at Bard High School Early College where I spoke at an assembly that LIVE OUT LOUD organized (www.liveoutloud.info). You recall, I speak to kids all over the New York City area for LIVE OUT LOUD which mentors, provides scholarships, and promotes awareness around LGBT issues for all students. This auditorium - filled with spirited students - had great comments and questions. After I shared one particular anecdote re: one of my late, great mentors Tom Morgan (for whom I got to sing "Wind Beneath My Wings" before his passing), a student asked me to sing it to them (They gave me a standing ovation). I dedicated it not only to the memory of Tom but to these teenagers who seem to really have a grasp on what they are (more courageously than me...at their age). And I mean the gay teens AND the straight teens. GREAT GROUP OF YOUNG FOLKS!

Then, I had a quick, pre-show drink at THERAPY.

Mario and Derrick invited Ant and me to pop by as Mario was preparing to see 'RACE' on Broadway.

I’ve known Ern since 7^th grade (1982) and he’s known my Miss Ross-jones since that time. But of my 25 times seeing Miss Ross, he’s never been. So, for his February birthday, I promised him a ticket (This, before I even knew Ross was – for sure – going on tour).

Then, Ant – of course – had to be there. And so many other friends I know through our collective love of DIANA - including my Frankie. Scott.

 And Dustin.

And Bernard.

 Just too many to name here.

But I must acknowledge my Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts accompanied me (also my birthday gift to him). Have you picked up your JUNE issue of ESSENCE Magazine (www.essence.com) with Taraji P. Henson on the cover? I’d mentioned this before, but a friend just called to say they saw the resource guide for Black fathers I wrote and compiled for ESSENCE, my 2^nd by-line since November (when I did a series of interviews with top thinkers on the shifting image of African American men in the era of Obama). It’s on p. 160...just below an awesome piece my NABJ sister Katti Gray wrote.

This past weekend, I put on my media consulting hat. I supervised a session to help a friend navigate some new career decisions. Then, my friend Ron Smith invited me to meet fab Chicago-based designer Borris Powell (www.borrispowell.com) at The Bryant Park Hotel. He does amazing dresses and coats/jackets. And in the house - at his suite - were many old industry friends like Dynelle as well as a round of new buddies - including model Cole who Ant and I remembered seeing in a few shows - including Miquel Antoinne and R. Scott French. Also, not intentionally, there was a host of SCORPIOS in the house (go figure). And that number included fashion photographer Antonio Anobile. Ant and his 'Wendy' co-worker Jaz came by too.

Later in the weekend, Ant and I accepted an invite to New Rochelle from my Amazing Grace Nichole and her New Ro buddies. They were throwing a garage sale. FUN TIMES! Afterwards, we went to Chat 19 American Grill for some delicious cuisine before turning in.

Then, Sunday, we did DRUMS ALONG THE HUDSON. This is an event my Carl Nelson produces every year (www.drumsalongthehudson.org/). He even booking me to host portions of the program in years gone by. This year, Ant – who has worked for the event before – and I were simply guests. Refreshing! The over-riding host is Sandra Bookman. Always a JOY! And my co-host from last year is Tetiana Anderson and she held down the fort brilliantly – including her tribute to Melky Jean, Wyclef's sister (www.carmafoundation.org). BFF Brian's girl Kelli and her son Jonathan joined us - after which we grabbed a lovely bite with her homegirl Emily at El Paso Restaurante Mexicano in Harlem. Then, an early evening back at home... getting ready for the week which includes my nephew coming up to NYC to find his permanent digs (The recent graduate from Morehouse College has a 1^st gig awaiting him here in Manhattan). Last week, Ant and I enjoyed a marathon-of-a-weekend in Atlanta – all centered around my nephew’s graduation. It was so great to see the family. And many of us were in the house. But before Ant and I got around to family time, we got to hang out with our friend Lamoh. He's the buddy with whom I hung out all last summer. Many of his friends were shooting "Real Housewives of Atlanta". I was field and story producing "Monica: Still Standing". And he and I actually met while I was shooting "Frankie & Neffe". He works alongside Dwight Eubanks... and manages all of his appearances. 

He took Ant & me to "Blakes on the Park" (Piedmont) where we stumbled into Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty's older sister on the now-canceled show). She is shooting a movie in ATL and was so SWEET - even remembering a recent story she read in The Huffington Post that named Morehouse one of the most grueling (academically challenging) colleges in the nation (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/12/the-most-grueling-college_n_574120.html); ALSO, Lamoh - my first call when I hit ATL - took Ant and me out later... to MIXX (in Ansley Mall).Then, we had to get our Taco Cabana on.

Ant and I also got some down-time at my sister Janice’s place with her husband Vincent, my cousin Felecia, and her husband Skip. My "original Amazing Grace" (BFF) Natalie stopped by my sister Janice's place to say HI with her gorgeous and smart girls Hannah and Lydia in tow. Though I'd left their Christmas presents with my sister, she and Nat hadn't connected yet. So, they got CHRISTMAS IN MAY! LOL! Since I hosted a "The Princess & The Frog" event for NABJ back in August (http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/NABJDisneyMagic.wmv), I received a lot of SWAG from Disney that I just knew the girls would enjoy! "Uncle" Ant threw in some stuff as well. His paternal energies were shining through. We also had to make time to meet BABY GAVIN, another of my BFF Chandra's 'baby love'! Everyone thought Ant was the father! FUTURE MOREHOUSE MAN? So, GREAT to spend time with our Chandra.

Ant and I also got to hang out with our friend Aaron and a buddy of his at my once-Atlanta-home-away-from-home "The TWELVE Hotel - Atlantic Station". We enjoyed some BBQ Pizza and special cocktails - including my kir royale which the servers knew to prepare for me from my time there last summer while shooting "Monica: Still Standing" and "Frankie & Neffe".

My nephew Herman L. Riley III (Noot, I call him) is now a MOREHOUSE MAN (c/o 2010). And since MOREHOUSE, too, is my ALMA MATER, I saw many ‘brothers’ - including Mike Bryant and Kevin Ross. I even got the chance to sing along with the rest of the Morehouse College Glee Club (on our annual tradition:  "Prayer" from Lohengrin and "Dear Old Morehouse"). And to that, I saw many of my professors – including Dr. David Morrow who directs The Morehouse College Glee Club of which I was a member.

Pappadeux was the backdrop for our post-graduation brunch. There, I actually got to see my Dad and reflect a little on 1992 when I became a Morehouse Man... and many of these same players were in attendance for me. And Ant and I got to talk to the many who came to celebrate my nephew - including my cousins Felecia and Sylathea who've known me since I was a baby. They shared all the tid-bits with him. The food was great! The cake was awesome (my sister's brainchild)! And what a blessing to all be together again... for such an OPTIMISTIC gathering! I LOVE YOU ALL!

MEANWHILE, CONRATS to aforementioned Morehouse brother Michael K. Watts on raising $7,000 (of $5.7 million overall) for AIDS Walk. WHAT A HUGE SUCCESS! He reports that over 45,000 people walked the 6.2 mile route which began in Central Park then circled around the Upper West Side and back into the park. Thanks to the funds raised, the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) and over 30 other tri-state area AIDS service organizations can continue helping thousands of people living with HIV and AIDS and their families year after year.  GO, MIKE GO!

I just wrapped up my last six-week project in Chicago. Tried to extend six to seven or eight weeks, but to no avail. All good though as HOME was calling me. Now, I must find something else to do with myself – creatively speaking and, of course, revenue-wise. This, as main clients are getting ready for a summer break… and so many of them just aren’t outsourcing at the frequencies at which they once did before this so-called recession. In the meantime, I’ll ride the wave of what I have earned over the last month or so and outreach other account receivables that are due me and par for the course in this freelance life.

We got word that the legendary Lena Horne passed away at 92. Well, as NYC anticipates the experience of MISS ROSS in the sold-out Radio City Music Hall venue on May 19^th, I got the chance to sing on the very stage. While at the storied venue where ROSS performed a couple of years ago (headlining DIVAS WITH HEART along with Patti LaBelle; Chaka Khan; and Gladys Knight - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/11/divas-with-heart.html), I was simply sitting in the audience with friends – awaiting a special TV taping. Before I knew it, the warm-up lady (also a friend) invited me to sing "And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going" before the packed house of 5300. This, because she knows I LOVE all things DREAMGIRLS, JENNIFER HOLLIDAY & HUDSON, and DIVAS! Well, like an out-of-body experience, my inner-DIVO stepped right over the me that didn't realize my name had just been called onto that stage in front of the anticipating crowd. And it was only after I slipped back to my seat that I realized I didn't just lunge into a little ditty (something soft and sweet that my early-morning voice could accommodate, but I had performed "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" a cappella - in my risky (albeit strong) falsetto. The residue of the audience’s thunderous applause woke me up to what had just taken place, after I sat back down. And after the awesome TV show (our reason for being there. LOL!), I couldn't walk two steps without folks asking for my autograph or to take a picture or to meet their mother - one of whom said to me after I shouted out how good the taping that we’d all just seen was: "Sure! More than that moment, I got the chance to invite many friends to join me. From Ern to Norell to Michelle to Nichole to Chenoa. Then, my Brian came down from DC. Also, Ryan and Marcus got to enjoy the fun. My girl Karen and her buddy Bryna came along with my Michaela and Joi (from BET). Also from my recent BET work: Loren. I saw Miss Bevy Smith in the house! My Morehouse brothers Geoffrey Bennett (and his fiancé Beth) and Mario came. Dear friend Danielle and her buddy Doris came. And my girl from NABJ, Cheryl Burton, an anchor at WLS in Chicago, came along with her mother. GREAT MOTHER'S DAY GIFT, huh? AFTERWARDS: Lunch at Armani Ristorante. Nichole, Ern, Brian, Michelle, Danielle, Chenoa, Pam, Doris, et al. wanted to celebrate our wonderful morning. So, we felt it required something more than our old standby BBQ. And we ran into Armani’s concierge Mechel, our dear friend who used to own Maroon’s Restaurant. Liquid lunch was good. The food itself was great. And the company was unparalleled. Then, I got to hang out at Hudson Hotel with Brian until Ant got off work. We then joined his work buddy Joi and his trainer Jen for karaoke. Of course, I did an encore presentation of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”. This, since Ant and the crew didn’t get to come to the show earlier.  And the soap opera fan that I am was SO EXCITED to see the characters Craig Montgomery and Rosanna Cabot in the 'karaoke' house! Well, their names are actually Jon Linstrom and Cady McClain. But they will always be Craig and Rosanna to me. Ant and I then did a nightcap at CAFETERIA  & MERCHANTS NYC dessert. GOOD FRIDAY!

When I first got back from Chicago, Ant and I had a lazy weekend. We did go to Mara & Tommie's place for the Mayweather Fight with Ern. Watching that boxing match reminded me that 'boxing' is the muse for this DIANA special: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3ZLbtWEQ54. On another day that weekend, we did it low-maintenance: Red Lobster. Remake of "Nightmare on Elm Street". Super WAL MART for shower curtain, some groceries, etc. AC unit! LAZY and productive!!!

One day, I stumbled into buddy Robert in Times Square while waiting on Ant to get off work. Robert & I enjoyed a lite bite, cocktail or two (a la Cinco de Mayo), and caught up at Zanzibar in Hell's Kitchen NYC (www.zanzibarnyc.com). Afterwards, Ant and I went to our buddy Seitu's birthday set. It took place on the rooftop of a high-rise building near the Lincoln Tunnel. Great to see friends Jamar, Ryan; Nina, our diva from The Apollo Theatre; Toyce, et al. Always a good time with Seitu and the gang.

This past weekend, Ant and I enjoyed a fun night. It was Common at Highline Ballroom (including a surprise appearance by his upcoming film's co-star Queen Latifah). They are both featured in “Just Wright” (www.foxsearchlight.com/justwright/) along with Phylicia Rashad and Pam Grier.

This, after we spent the afternoon with buddies Brian and Caleb. We’re all close via the National Association of Black Journalists. They brought their buddy Regine – also NABJ – into the mix. You'll recall, Brian and I have been best buddies from last April in DC to the time we spent in L.A. while both out there on business. Then, Ant hosted Brian and his family in Denver over Christmas. This time, in addition to our Radio City outing, we all hung out atop The Hudson Hotel's Sky Terrace. Then, we did a birthday meal for Brian at Delta Grill. GOOD TIMES! Ant and I did a little karaoke where we enjoyed some quality time with our “karaoke Cathy” who is always looking out for us.

SHOUT OUT to my NABJ sister Marcie Eanes who is riding high on the release of her first book of poetry “Sensual Sounds”. It is a thought-provoking collection designed to encourage and inspire readers to cherish intimate relationships. In addition to being a poet, she is a journalist who has written for numerous publications and has shared her poetry in a variety of venues across the nation. Marcie is doing her thing! CONGRATS, MARCIE!

Ant and I are off to Atlanta this weekend to finally celebrate my nephew Herman’s graduation from my alma mater Morehouse. Noot – I call him – is poised to get that degree. I am such a PROUD UNCLE. He has stayed with Ant and me over the last two summers as he interned at HBO. And we have had some good times. Now, he’ll head up to New York City and make it on his own. He will be a marketing analyst for American Express. It will be great to welcome him – fully – to this brotherhood, or nation – if you will, of MOREHOUSE MEN!

Before leaving for Noot’s graduation, Nichole and I met for lunch at Cafeteria. Afterwards, Ant and I got to see Sabrina, her mother, and son before heading down to The Village to Desire to hang out with Theo, Ra-Fael De-Blanco, and author of “Nick, Dontae, Gus, & Jack”, Nigel Barto. Lots of laughs but little sleep before our flight.

On one night, I went to Copper Smith’s and ran into summer-concert-companion Shani as well as several of Ant’s ‘Wendy’ colleagues. This, before my L.A. buddy Herndon Davis shared his latest tome “Repackaged Common Sense” with me. It’s A New Age Path to Career and Business Success. From there, joined Ant & his colleague J at Planet Rose Karaoke Lounge to sing a happy-hour concert. Then, Ant & I joined his sister-friend (from Denver by way of France) Sabrina. After we picked her up at her east side hotel, we escorted her to karaoke. Then, we enjoyed a late dinner at Cafeteria. She was present the night Ant & I met December 2005. So, this was a full circle night!
