PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!

WHAT A WHIRLWIND the last couple of weeks have been!!! Getting ready for the holidays. Doing my best to ensure new business in my mix for 2011. Making sure existing business clients send my money for services already rendered. On their own, those aforementioned tasks can be (and – in some cases for me – were) overwhelming. But on top of that, I found myself processing why certain important relationships from my past – family and friends – have gone the direction of disharmony. (Some current life circumstances re-introduced the unresolved wounds and – even here after I’ve returned home from being with my family in Georgia – I still am perplexed as to where things went wrong. I still don’t have those answers, but that cloud has subconsciously and consciously covered me as I prepared to go home to Georgia to be with my family). Though so happy to be back in the physical presence of my loved ones – blood family and chosen family, a twinge of morose accompanied me throughout December (and still). But I put my best face forward and found many opportunities to call joy forth. No amount of sadness could dwarf my many BLESSINGS!

ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT IS BACK!!!!

So this THURSDAY, DECEMBER 30TH at NATIVE RESTAURANT in HARLEM on Lenox Avenue & 118th Street, ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT is BACK (after a pre-Christmas break). The week before last, we had a really spirited time. Our ALL-STAR KARAOKE regulars – like Brian, Rick, Turquoise, Sidra, et al held it down (as they do) – including throwing in a few Christmas carols. But I was so EXCITED to see my Morehouse brother Nasser Metcalfe who popped by to support (between his work detail with Prince, who was in the NYC-area. MORE ON THAT IN A MINUTE). Also, singer ESNAVI (www.esnavi.com) popped by and sang brilliantly. CHECK HER NEW MUSIC OUT! Also, NBC News’ Mara Schiavocampo – one of my BFFs and AMAZING GRACES – popped right off of a plane to grace us with her rendition of Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone”. And Bangin’ Ass Artists Troy Saunders – my dear friend – came by along with Darryl – to serenade us. Keep your eye out for all he’s doing to promote GREAT MUSIC: www.banginassartists.com/ Oh! I’ve mentioned my model buddies Cole; Paul; and Ian. Prior to ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT, I got to hang out with Ian who – along with the other fellas – was heading home for the holidays. I shout them out from time to time because they are ones to watch… and Ian actually has a singing voice with which he’s promised to grace ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT in 2011. Remember you heard it here first! HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW!

I’M DREAMING OF A PURPLE CHRISTMAS!

So for the five years Ant & I have been together, we’ve done the varied holidays a number of ways. He’s come to Georgia a few times. I’ve come to Denver a time or two. Sometimes, we have to do it separately where he visits his folks in Denver. And I get my solo family time in Georgia (Atlanta & Savannah). His plane ticket had him leaving last week just after he’d wrapped his work with “The Wendy Williams Show” for the year. It didn’t give us any hang time without the cloud of our respective workloads. But my girlfriend Mara and her husband Tommie came through with the opportunity for Ant & me to see PRINCE… and – VOILA! – Ant changed his flight and we got a really cool, early Christmas present. Let me just say: Madison Square Garden was PRINCE’s house on this night… and Ant & I were honored to be in the number. PRINCE sang just about all of his hits – from “Dirty Mind” to “Purple Rain” (and some of his self-penned hits that others have done like “Nothing Compares To You” (The Family & Sinead O’Connor) and “Cool” (The Time). Sheila E was a surprise guest who performed Sheena Easton’s PRINCE duet “U Got The Look” along with “Glamorous Life” and the big finale of “Love Bizarre” – featuring PRINCE who called up an ALL-STAR array of celebs to join in on the jam session. The stars included “The View”s Sherri Shephard; Whoopi Goldberg; Spike Lee (smiling with tambourine in hand); Naomi Campbell; Alicia Keys; Dr. Cornel West; Tavis Smiley; and on and on and on.  It was good to see my girlfriends Sidra, Dianne Smith, and Jacquie Lee in the house. We all enjoyed! Afterwards, Ant and I got a well-timed invite to join our buddy Caleb and friends at STK & Dos Caminos in Manhattan’s meatpacking district. GREAT way to celebrate before Ant and I parted ways for a week and change to be with our respective families! THANKS PRINCE, MARA, TOMMIE, CALEB, and THE REVOLUTION!

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS 2010

Once Ern & I got Ant to the airport the following night on his postponed flight, we got some catch-up time (as BFFs since 7th grade) – including our favorite Dallas BBQ; JAPAS 55 for karaoke where it’s always a good time! Then, a couple of days later, Ern & I flew to our young adult home and our childhood home – respectively. We touched down in ATL (from the Philly airport as we drove down from North Jersey to take advantage of a more economical flight). Our friend Cristal picked us up. We got our JR Cricket’s on. Ern’s sister Sam came to pick him up to take him to her place. My boy Lamoh – who you may recall from my summer in Atlanta last year - came to scoop me up to get me to my sister and her husband’s place. But not before we enjoyed our late night bite & cocktails.

HOLIDAY PARTY OVER HERE!!!

So it was more than a notion to be having a casual day with friends and suddenly get an invite to a black tie affair but with the help of my friend Camille, we pulled something together (as I neglected to pack even a suit this time, a rarity). But worth it all to see some great friends. The day actually started pretty low-key-yet-fulfilling as my BFFs Chandra & Camille & Chandra's son Gavin picked me up and we enjoyed a nice lunch at Ru-San. Then, haircuts for the boys (Gavin’s first). And Gavin didn't cry once. He was the best client ever!!! Gavin and I showcased our new looks at TARGET. It seemed to put a smile on his face! "HI... GAVIN!!!!" I would say. And he in reply says: "HI!!!!!!" Ant and I consider it a blessing that we can share a little bit of Gavin with Chandra. And Tata too (or most pointedly). She's such a great support to us all! Somewhere amidst all of this, my girl Camillle and my boy Lamoh invited me to accompany them to DeVyne Stephens' formal gala. It was held at the old Roxy (Buckhead Tavern). Impromptu (for me), but I rode the wave to discover a FUN NIGHT. Bumping into Morehouse brothers, industry friends, old-&-new buddies - including Jermaine Dupree, Kelly Rowland, Kenny Leon, Jazze Pha (and his artist: Rain), THE Dr. J, Babyface (who did a holiday serenade), Keith Robinson (Dreamgirls & Half & Half), up-and-comimg singer of Black Parisian descent named Louisa, and a host of others. Special shout outs to: my old friends Shanti Das; Kenny Leon; Joshua Butler (Morehouse brother); Meredith Garcia (Fashion List – www.thefashionlist.com. Meredith  gave my blog "A Day in the Life of Riley: pop culture & possibilities" the Golden Poodle from R. Scott French and American Chang a couple of years back: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2006/12/22/wake-up-and-dream.html); Morehouse brother Will (of Obnoxious TV fame); Chris Ruffin, also a Morehouse brother (One Stop Productions who put on the event); and AUDIO which performed. And a special shout out to WXIAs-own Evelyn Mims, the "soap sultress" - one of my favorite people in the whole world! THANKS to Camille & Lamoh for making it happen!

MY FRIENDS ARE FAMILY TOO!

Being back in ATLANTA wasn’t all galas and premieres. I also got to have low-maintenance hang-time with some of my dearest friends – including BFF Elise and her wonderful family. Elise and I enjoyed – dare I say – a bottle of Nuestro Orgello (www.tequilaon.com) inside margaritas that she prepared as her mom cooked Christmas dinner and other appetizers for us to snack on. Too, we caught up and had some of the best talk I’ve had in a long time as only Elise and I can do. I LOVE YOU, BOO! I too got to hang out with my cousin Floyd – always a pleasure. Shout out to Camille & THE WOMEN for inviting my Morehouse brother Khalid and me to their “vegan” dinner party (Khalid happened to be in town). Also, SHOUT OUT to the “Waffle House” for food I’d actually eat. LOL! And Khalid and I did that afterwards. But the food for thought at our vegan, Christmas eve affair was the most nourishing!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

SAVANNAH, I LOVE YOU!

I had some cherished time with family while in Savannah. My sister Janice, her husband Vincent, and I got on the road early Christmas morning. We got into town… and did a drive-by their god-daughter Deja’s house for gift exchange and a round of UNO (I won one of those rounds… and, OH MY!, how the game has changed from when I played as a child). Then, we made it to our childhood home where my dad and his wife Diana were awaiting us. Like we Riley’s do every Christmas, we all gathered in the living room and did our gift exchanges. Then, we got dressed to go to the first of our two dinners. My Dad’s side gathered at my aunt Goldie’s house. We were all excited to see my cousin Buddha for the first time in 15 years. He and I grew up together. (One disappointment: No chitlins’ this year.) From there, my late great mom’s only sister (and only sibling) Mary Lee hosted that side of the family. As always, we had a blast. So much so, my cousin Dee Dee and her husband Chris hosted us at their place the next day. The occasion: “low country boil” and Taboo. On this night, another of my favorite cousins Kejuanna took me by Ern’s place – so I could get a scoop (or many) of his mom’s banana pudding. While there, he and his family were playing Wii. Though a dusting of the blues (for a few pointed reasons), the light snowfall (and so many great reunions with family & friends - including a night at TANTRIC lounge spot on Broughton Street) underscore the reality: I am BLESSED with the LOVE & LIGHT of my adoring family & friends. That said, I got to spend some fun time with them at one of Savannah’s nightspots Tantric where we danced the night away. We also ran into many old friends from high school – including Shaun Beasley; Ricky Barnes; and Marcus Allen. And my cousin Robby was in the mix as well. As it’s been 22 years since I graduated high school, I took pride in how good we all looked. I guess Black doesn’t crack. LOL!

AMAZING GRACE

Holiday in Savannah wrapped with breakfast; visit from my high school BFF Natalie & her kids (for gift exchange); visits to a couple of aunts & other family/friends – including my Aunt Dorothy; and Vincent’s mom Ruth and son Brian. Then, once back in ATL, Ern and I met up with Carla; Thelma; and other mutuals at Cala Bar & Grill (for Falcons/Saints and catch-up). Nightcap: Karaoke Melody (in Doraville). We had a BLAST! And now I know where to go to karaoke when I go to Atlanta!!!!

HOME SWEET HOME

In the wake of this storm, Ern & I managed to make it home safely by way of ATL, Philly airport, and the NJ Turnpike. I wasn’t ready to unpack, but EXCITED to chill at home alone and watch my annual treat: KENNEDY CENTER HONORS (CBS at 9pm/Eastern) as I’ve yapped about that so many times here on this blog: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2010/12/15/tis-the-season-to-be-jollyfa-la-la.html. My Miss Ross was in the audience and my boy Ryan was on the stage with The Gay Men's Chorus of Washington. They performed with Matthew Morrison, Carol Channing, Kelsey Grammer and Chita Rivera to honor Broadway legend Jerry Herman. 2010 Honorees of the Kennedy Center and President and Mrs. Obama included Merle Haggard, Bill T. Jones, Jerry Herman, and Paul McCartney among others. This is not the group’s first time on the national stage as they performed at the 2004 Kennedy Center Honors for Elizabeth Taylor and in front of millions at the “We Are One: Obama Inaugural Concert”, broadcast on HBO.

TEENA MARIE

Teena Marie HAS died!!! What a loss! She reportedly died in her sleep. I'm told she had been having some kind of bad seizures for the last week or so. Last week, she had a seizure in her sleep, and she fell and broke her rib. She was resting with family & friends nearby. Her daughter found her not breathing. So sad! Though she will be missed, she leaves us with such a rich musical legacy – from “Square Biz” to “Lovergirl” to “Out on a Limb” to “I’m Just a Sucker For Your Love” (a song Rick James’ originally wrote for Teena’s legendary label mate Diana Ross) to “Portuguese in Love” to “Fire & Desire” (her duet with Rick) to “I Need Your Lovin’” and so many other hits!!! WOW! REST IN PEACE, OUR “IVORY QUEEN OF SOUL”!!!!! (AND TO MY QUEEN OF SOUL, as in QUEEN ELIZABETH RILEY - my late, great mother - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!).

NEW FRONTIER

A few weeks back, my nephew graduated from ‘our’ alma mater Morehouse College in Atlanta. A few days after that, he and his roommate Harrison came up to find their new digs as they both have snagged post-college gigs in NYC. I pulled from my repository to help them secure options of which they went with one of them… in Harlem. We worked up an appetite on both days – going to Amy Ruth the first day and Dinosaur (also in Harlem) on the next day (with their fellow college mate Chris).

DIANA IN CHICAGO

DIANA ROSS led me back to Chicago. After I’d been there for four or so weeks on that special project, I wasn’t pining to be back there. But when friend Sally Lou snagged tix to take my girls  Itika, Jakki, and me to the show, I made it my business to be there. I flew into Midway Chicago where – as I waited on Chicago Carl to pick me up – I ran into DC-based singer Easy Evans about whom I’ve written in my blog (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2010/3/24/nothing.html). We'd never met but knew each other’s faces via the blog. Chicago Carl took me to Leona's for a lunch of Italian (lasagna, pizza, wings, etc.). I then popped by Jessie Dean where Carl is a hairstylist to see all the ladies there. Then, Itika and Jakki scooped me up and we went to meet up with Sally Lou at The Wit's rooftop (for cocktails) before show time. In a nutshell, DIANA was FABULOUS (again). The show was SOLD OUT! CHICAGO LOVES DIANA! And DIANA SHOWS SHE LOVES CHICAGO! Afterwards Sally Lou, Itika, and I had a quick nightcap at Jbar which was hosting a “Sex & The City 2” party. From there, I went to Morehouse BFF Eddie's place for a good night's sleep. When I woke up the next morning (before he took me to the airport), Eddie performed a special send-off gift: a recital of the music he's been learning as he takes piano lessons. Keep doing it, Eddie!

BACK IN NYC: SILK ELECTRIC

Got the news that Gary Coleman had passed away before I got back to NYC. Sad to hear, especially the circumstances surrounding the troubled star’s life since he gained success in the late ‘70s, asking: "WHAT 'CHU TALKIN' BOUT, WILLIS?" R.I.P. GARY...! You brought LOTS of LAUGHTER our way. GREAT LEGACY! Once back in NYC, I met up with Ant, our buddy Theo, Ant's work friend Kemar for dinner at Vinyl (with fab album-cover menus - including Diana's "Silk Electric" (album with "Muscles") and another favorite Culture Club's "Colour By Numbers". They even had my DIANA’s “Bob Mackie original” doll in a display case on the stairway. Great to hang out with the fellows. And great to be back with Ant, though I'd only been gone for a day. From there, a nightcap at DESIRE in the Village... and a late-night bite at the Rt. 4 DINER in NJ.

SEX & THE CITY 2

Ern and I have been big "Sex & The City 2" fans since the beginning. We all went to see the first one a few years back. Of course, there was lots of blitz this go around! Some find that the sequel didn’t meet expectations. My line: “It was good enough, if just too much.” My NABJ sister friend (and proud mother of a Spelmanite Erin) Bonnie Newman Davis asked me to comment in her latest piece for The Grio (http://www.thegrio.com/entertainment/lack-of-diversity-doesnt-diminish-sex-and-the-city-appeal.php). I had more to say than was used in the piece – including these points when asked if I thought the “Sex & The City” franchises lack of diversity diminished its appeal – most pointedly to African American women. Some of my other thoughts include:

1.” Black women in pop culture have historically LOVED to dress up, get together, and enjoy something on the big or small screen that reflects their fantasies and sometimes their realities. If not "Mahogany", "Girlfriends", or "Waiting to Exhale" which - as Black pop vehicles - are few and far between, what else is there to fellowship around but a phenomenon like "Sex & The City" and its much-anticipated sequel? This, since the economic playing field between black women and white women has leveled off (if just a bit - even in this recession). So, Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik aren't just for Carrie Bradshaw anymore.”

2. “Black women DID carry "Sex & The City". It's called "Girlfriends". And though Joan Carol Clayton may have borrowed some of her Christian Louboutins from her portraying actress Tracee Ellis Ross' closet (or perhaps Tracee's mom Diana), this show was as much appointment television for many Black women (and men) as "Sex & The City”".

3.  "The premise of "Sex & The City" is a group of white woman dealing with the shortage of men in New York City. Black women have been experiencing this drought of Black men for years. So, misery loves company, especially when it is sporting haute couture and sipping on a Cosmopolitan."

4. ""Let's Talk About Pep" explored the "Sex & The City" dynamic with women of color. And it did well in the reality genre which is popular right now. So, it's a universal epidemic with which most women identify."

5. "I do find it fascinating that Black women - for the most part - haven't been turned off by the lack of diversity and its weak attempts at incorporating color into the mix i.e. Blair Underwood (the show); Jennifer Hudson (the movie); etc. (but likely no etc.)"

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND MCCAFES

FUN TIMES at our girlfriend Danielle and her husband Bernard's place in Metutchen, NJ. We karaoke’d all day long. Then, all night long. I performed Debarge’s “All This Love”. Also, the Kate Bush version of “This Woman’s Work”. Ant and I did our favorites. Ern even joined me on "Fame". A few days later, I popped by one of NYC's new McCafes. Not just to grab a #1. But I was invited by host and friend Bevy Smith (and buddies Tracy Anderson & Iman Jefferson). This was an event to promote McDonald's remix on its menu and select locations. Industry friends Karu Daniels & Marcia Cole were also in the house as well as BET talent Alesha Renee. 3 McFrappes, 1 McSmoothy, and a 3-way sampling of McAngus Wraps later, I joined Ant & his Denver buddy Justin for sushi. We ran into American Idol's Andrew Garcia. You'll recall, he did the unplugged version of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up". He'll be on the tour this summer. NICE GUY!

SHOOTING PILOT

Beyond the spot revenue projects, I just wrapped shooting a pilot over two days - one in Philly; the other in NYC. The Philadelphia shoot took place at Aci Nae Boutique (http://acinae.com/). What gratitude for some great friends (all of whom donated their services i.e. James, Andrea, Max, Valee, Ant, et al.). It was a long, fulfilling day of making (something) happen. Then, we shot phase two a few days later. BIG THANKS to my friends Ted Gibson; Jason Backe; Dr. Shirley Madhere; and the host of many - including my friends who donated their time/resources and/or double'd as our production crew; models; stylists/make-up artists; etc. to make Day 2 of this pilot I'm hosting a REALITY. ALSO, CONGRATS to Ted on his new partnership with The American Association of Cosmetology School: 'Beauty Changes Lives'. (STAY TUNED for more on that and 'REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DC's Mary Amons - who was in the house with her BFF on the show, our Jason Backe, celebrity colorist for the stars.)Now, we are identifying a pro bono editor before we begin taking pitch meetings and also going viral to see what synergies we can create. Stay tuned. And afterwards, we celebrated. Cocktails. Food. Karaoke. And more karaoke. And more karaoke.

RAVE REVIEWS

Last weekend, Ant & I joined my boy Caleb at The Hudson Hotel in the city. We were joined by CC; Ant's girlfriend Manivone; and her cousin Vilay. We did some more dancing downtown before going to Cafeteria for breakfast. The sun was up and at 'em when we got home on this particular day. But it didn’t stop us from heading out to New Rochelle for a lovely summer dinner gathering at my Amazing Grace Nichole’s home. Great to hang with Cynthia, cousin Jeffrey, Seattle friend Patrick, Danielle, Melony, and more (missed CJ). This, before Ant & I went to see "The Lion King" on Broadway (again). Then, we went to Stone Rose Lounge in the Time Warner Center. It is there where we celebrated our girlfriend Katrina's birthday. Happy Birthday, Kat! Caleb joined us here as well. Then, Bar Sepia in Brooklyn to connect to former journalism buddy Errol followed by L.A. and Denver's own Pablo at another BK spot or two in Williamsburgh.

THANKS AND FELLOWSHIP

So, Manivone invited us to her Brooklyn digs to enjoy some amazing FOH (broth, noodles, thinly-sliced beef, shrimp, etc.) as prepared by her Denver-based cousin Villay (who has been helping us shoot this pilot). The Denver BK gang was in the house! And then, we returned the favor to Villay who has been itching for some soul food since she got here. So, Amy Ruth it was (even though we wanted to all try out The Famous - NEW - Pink Tea Cup, which opened this week). Afterwards we joined buddy Brian at Native where we ran into many interesting folks - including DJ Malcolm Jackson; my NABJ friend/Great great granddaughter of Madame CJ Walker, A'Lelia Bundles (who had some good info to share with Ant and me about Miss Jessie's Original (http://www.missjessies.com/) and a great period fashion exhibit at the Museum of the City of NY (www.mcny.org)); Winter Antiques Show's Eula C. Johnson who shared awesome tales of her long friendship with Civil Rights Activist Bayard Rustin who took a backseat as he orchestrated much of the movement on behalf of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and so many more (He organized The March on Washington, for example). This, because he was gay. Always out and unapologetic. But smart enough to know that - at that time - his orientation may have confused the efforts that were being made to gain civil rights for Black people. I've studied Bayard Rustin and consider him a personal hero. Luis Andrade; and more. Then, buddy Candice Harper threw a summer soiree at her new Harlem digs. I took the time to pose with the Fiercee Award that she designed (She's now prop stylist for 'Wendy'). Good times with friends - old and new, eating well; great conversation; and 'Mahogany' in the background (on TV ONE).

TONY AWARDS & BLACK 2: BROADWAY

Tony Awards splendor in NYC... and Alyson Williams was among the singers who performed at the Black 2: Broadway Tony Awards viewing party program which I had the privilege to script!!! In the 11th hour, I got an invite to go to the Tony Awards at Radio City (Thanks Carl), but I stuck to my plans to attend the Black 2:Broadway viewing party at G Uptown in Harlem including tributes (that I wrote) to: Broadway classic "Sophisticated Ladies"; my friend Ken Roberson (choreographer-director extraordinaire); and AUDELCO. Hosts included "Passing Strange" star Coleman Domingo. Also, friend/Broadway star Adrian Bailey co-hosted. And it was good to see L.A. girlfriend Lauren Tobin who - you'll recall - was one of my hosts last year in Los Angeles while I was there on an extended project ("Monica: Still Standing"). She is in town with client Coleman Domingo, who Ant and I just LOVE from our Broadway favorite "Passing Strange". And one of his castmates, Tony-nominated De'Adre Aziza joined him on this special night. Also, Lauren was there with another client The National Newspaper Publishers Association - an event to which she'd invite me that was scheduled later in the week. More on that later. NYC publicist Gwen Quinn; my Karu Daniels and Bridget Bland; Stephen Beasley (Vocalist in The sbP - a group that's doing great things this summer: www.sonicbids.com/thesbp and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4BSCV-DEWw&feature=youtube_gdata); and many more. Miss Kimberly Nichole performed as well. Love her (www.kimberlynichole.com). She is managed by my friend Anshia who made possible an opportunity for me to work with Mary J. Blige. Stay tuned for those details later in this writing. But also: Kimberly Nichole got to perform for "Ashford & Simpson" back in November. And so did I. Earlier, good to hang out with Theo and Victoria at VINYL for brunch. Victoria does brows and more in Beverly Hills at Anastasia… and hosted Ant and me a time or two last summer when I was working in L.A. Always good to see her!

ARETHA RETURNS TO THE APOLLO

Apollo Theater's charity benefit and after-party was a blast. Jamie Foxx hosted. Angela Bassett & Leslie Uggams did a great tribute to Lena Horne (w/'Lena' music director Linda Twine); Chris Tucker and Floetry's Marsha Ambrosia ("Butterflies") on MJ Tribute; Danny Glover; Estelle; & Sharon Jones;  and Donnie McClurkin. And so many great friends after - including NBC 4's David Ushery ("The Debrief"); his wife Isabel; VH1 senior news correspondent Janell Snowden; Malik Yoba; and a host of others. FUN NIGHT! The next day proved a social whirlwind. There was the NYC Pride event at City Hall (hosted by Wendy Williams). We attended with Charlie T; friend Andrea; and others. Afterwards, Mary J. Blige/Catherine Malandrino fashion show at MoMA. Great to see many friends there -including stylists Tai Beauchamp and June Ambrose; Then, debut of Richard Harris Inc. and re-launch of American Chang - all by my favorite designer R. Scott French who I have known for a few years now. American Chang – in fact – gave my blog “A Day in the Life of Riley: pop culture & possibilities” its “Golden Poodle Award” as “The Best Way To Spend A Lazy Afternoon” (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2006/12/22/wake-up-and-dream.html).And Ant has continued to pull from their respective collections over the years - for my TV/public appearances and for everyday looks. I LOVE R. Scott French and now the new line Richard Harris. Plus, my friend Mykel C. Smith of Mykel C. Smith Creative created the night while other friend Ron Smith ensured I was in the house (After set at Hotel AKA). And Ant made sure to pull some pieces from the new line for me to try on as we will soon be securing updates to my wardrobe.

KELLY ROWLAND AND A PARADE OF STARS

Another fun night (after a hard day of work): KELLY ROWLAND listening set at HUDSON Hotel (www.kellyrowland.com). Ant couldn't make it as he had a quick trip to Denver to make. But my girl Andrea joined me. Plus, the burden of proof was mine as Ant has a pic with Beyonce (from when he took me to Manila for my birthday to see her); Kelly (from an event he attended last year in NYC while I was in LA); and Michelle (from her opening night in Broadway's "Chicago").And he has Letoya Luckett.  I - on the other hand - have Beyonce (of course); Michelle (of course); and Letoya (from the pre-DC3 line-up). Now, I love Ms. Luckett, but I knew I wasn't going to stop until I got my KELLY pic. And now, I'm complete (unless I'm going to go on a search for LaTavia (though it's worth noting that I've yet to get my PIX with DIANA, MARY, nor CINDY nor LYNDA nor SHERRI and the other rotating SUPREMES memebers. MARY? MISS ROSS? LOL!).GAYLE KING interviewed her on the new UNIVERSAL-MOTOWN project of which we heard 5 tunes. Also in the house: my Bevy Smith, Marlynn Snyder; Shia; Star Jones; Patrik-Ian Polk; etc. After, Andrea and I joined Jacque Reid at Time Warner Center for NABJ event. Great to see my NABJ peeps – including President Kathy Times; my mentor Darius Walker; and many more. It is an EXCITING time for NABJ (www.nabj.org) as San Diego is being decked out as the backdrop for our upcoming convention at the end of July. I Chair the NABJ A&E Task Force and we have some exciting programming ahead - from professional development panels, like "Reality TV: Is This Where The Jobs Are?" to "Writing Scripts for TV - Primetime Sitcoms and Dramas" to a special reception; TV & film previews; etc. And Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts and I are co-producing an opening event for the convention that includes an opening plenary featuring DR. OZ. Stay tuned for more info on that... or click on www.nabj.org. From the NABJ mixer(s), Andrea and I transitioned to Tori Spelling book party. She’s so SWEET! I chatted her up a little about her ‘gay icon’ status. She talked to me about her new book "Uncharted TerriTORI," her third book, which is outselling her second book after just two days. GO TORI! And in the house: Village People’s first cowboy Randy Jones; and Little House on the Prairie’s Alison Arngrim who too has a memoir that includes tales of her days as Nellie Oleson. It’s titled “Confessions Of A Prairie Bitch”.

MEN’S SUMMIT

http://dysonshow.org/?p=1721  So if you click on this link (and listen between 13:46 - 31:27), you’ll hear my contribution to Rev. Dr. Michael Eric Dyson’s MEN’S SUMMIT – an interesting, introspective, and critical look at MANHOOD as we segue into a FATHER’S DAY weekend. I enjoyed being at the roundtable (held my own, I think), and I am assured a return invite.

FFAWN: BEING THE DIFFERENCE

My work in helping produce the script and evening for Mary J. Blige’s FFAWN went very well – to the tune of $150,000 (approximately). The prior picture shows me with FFAWN's Anshia (who too manages the aforementioned Kimberly Nichole). Cipriani was the elegant, well-appointed backdrop. And according to guest and social networking buddy Lynn Whitfield, “This event ran smoothly… and was well-paced! GREAT JOB!” Her words. THANKS LYNN! Others in the house: Mary J (though the pic above is a file pic from a listening party she hosted a year and change ago); hosts Deborah Roberts; Taraji P. Henson; and Idris Elba (and presenters Queen Latifah, etc.) – all of whom married their talents to my words and created a really fun night. Plus, I got to see many old friends and associates – including Chemene (‘Today’); Quon (BET); Tai; Eunice; and many others. I got to meet Melanie Fiona as well. Special shout out to: Madeline Nelson-Small, Executive Director of FFAWN. Here, she, my friend ELEW (who performed), and I pose for my final pic of the night. CONGRATS, MADELINE! GREAT TO WORK WITH YOU! THANKS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY!

LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

I got some great chat time with Berry Gordy.

He was honored at the first annual Legacy of Excellence awards per the National Newspaper Publishers Association of which former Savannah mayor (first Black)/publisher of Black paper The Herald Floyd Adams is a member.

I also went to middle and high school with his daugther Khristi. And former Mayor Adams was in my father's wedding back in 1996 (while Mayor).

It was really cool to see a Savannah icon in NYC. When we posed for this picture, he was wrapping up a chat with former NYC Mayor David Dinkens (The Big Apple's First Black Mayor... and only to date, I think).

My Sidra accompanied me to the dinner which was put on – in varying roles – by my L.A. friend Lauren Tobin; “Monica: Still Standing” AD and buddy Shannon Love; and host/journalist Michelle Miller.

Afterwards, friend of mutual friends Tichina Arnold – a total joy – invited Sid and me to join she and friends at Woo Lae Oak Restaurant (creative Korean cuisine) in SOHO.

We then invited her to join us at my girl Anshia’s client Kimberly Nichole’s Joe’s Pub show.

Our Kevin-Anthony (from Black 2: Broadway was - of course - in the house).

Kimberly Nichole gave full-out DRAMA! But she followed her fab entrance and extremely intense, opening songs with some awesome material from her project: "The Yellow Brick Journey” (Now re-released and expanded as “YBJ Reloaded”).

She too covered MJ’s “Dirty Diana” and Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”. Ashford & Simpson were in the house. And Tichina truly enjoyed Kimberly Nichole which means a lot since Tichina can blow the roof off of any and every venue in which I've seen her. Actually, she is going to be doing more singing in L.A. - so stay tuned. Then, Tichina asked us to join her at Griffin Lounge in the Meatpacking District. And VOILA! Another GREAT NIGHT!

LAST SUPPER

Oh! And you know that Spicy Chick-Fil-A sandwich is out! Ant, Ern, and I tried it out! I love ALL THINGS CHICK-FIL-A! Though I am SPICY intolerant, I may have to suffer periodically as it's quite tasty! BON APPETIT!

"... COLORED PEOPLE ON!!!!!!!"

My buddy Greg Dunmore sent me this tid-bit from fellow NABJ member Richard Prince’s column (http://www.mije.org/richardprince/tapestry-modern-america-praises-kennedy). It chronicles how the Diana Ross-led trio, biggest American musical act of the ‘60s, faced a color barrier few today would imagine: getting on the cover of Detroit’s Sunday magazine of TV listings. This, while their fans were at home on their linoleum kitchen floors exclaiming to anyone within the sound of their voices: “…. COLORED PEOPLE ON!!!!!” How far we’ve come… and yet some things are poised for improvement. STILL! THANKS GREG!

Meanwhile, I’m STILL in L.A. – home of many things TELEVISION and I’m still working in the business. Ant and I are brainstorming ideas to have my own show and some other projects green light --- one day at a time, sweet Jesus. This, as we contribute at high frequencies to our respective clients – from ‘Monica’ to ‘Frankie & Neffe’ to “The Wendy Williams Show” and beyond…

Until I need to be camera ready, I’ve been sporting a new look that kinda' happened from a space of laziness and depression: a goatee (of sorts). As I manage the latter (and took in the positive feedback), I decided to play around with it a little bit more.

Work is going fine here in L.A. as we post-produce Monica's episodes for BET. Admittedly, I'm a little down and isolated from being so far from home for so long... and I'm having a hard time shaking that blues. But the checks are catching us up... but not completely just yet as I manage East Coast expenses and have to put myself up here on the West Coast (hotel & car rental, EH!). But one day at a time, I'm somehow doing it (with lots of support).

Now, on to some of the social snapshots that have kept me entertained here in L.A.:

This past Sunday, I got an invite to see a cool play with music "Naked Boys Singing!" featuring new friend Eric B. Anthony. Also featured is my NYC friend-of-friend Tony Melson.  I met Tony five or so years ago in New York City through my actor/singer/dancer friends Erich McMillan and Kimberly Jajuan. I really enjoyed the piece which has a production in New York City that I never got to see – in part because I found the cast a bit homogenized. With this company, I’m happy to say that there is diversity… and Eric B. and Tony rise to the top in their roles. I was even more excited to see that the writers (in addition to DIVA wordsmith Bruce Vilanch) are also diverse, including songwriter/arranger (and performer in his own right) Trance Thompson, who did the big ‘The Entertainer’ number that brings the crowd to its feet – especially the way Eric B. Anthony performs it.

After the play, Eric, his friend Andre (another new-to-L.A. actor), and I decided to grab a bite at Bossa Nova. We hooked up with our mutual friend Delandis there. Then, we did a roll by The Abbey where many folks were out including my buddy Jensen Atwood of "Noah's Arc" fame. I had the chance to interview him four or so years ago in Indianapolis. He told me that he loved my interviewing style and found it to be one of his most enjoyable. Imagine my surprise when – after all these years – he came up to me, remembered me, and agreed to another photo op. My buddy Tony who hosts a fun dance contest every Tuesday night at Micky's in West Hollywood was also there. Our heads didn’t get cut off this time. SMILE!

It’s been bittersweet of late as my girlfriend Sidra has packed up her L.A. bags and headed back to New York City. Though I’ll see her upon completion of my work, she’s been such the saving grace for me here in L.A. We made the best of it by hanging  out every single day until her departure. On one night, though, she was to take me to R&B LIVE in Hollywood (I hear it's great entertainment). But her schedule didn't allow. It freed me to hang with my college mate Danni. She took me to Mani's Bakery (Hearty, organic cuisine!). Sid made up for it another night when - after I woke up on the wrong side of the bed (and subsequently got back in - fetal position - for what getting up created), she came to the rescue: Her friend Marilyn invited us to the birthday party of her cousin, L.A. Anchor Marc Brown. His place in The Valley is absolutely gorgeous and chockfull of details that made for a fun night. Perfect backdrop for uplift.

Another highlight from the week came with a PART 1 and a PART 2. My Morehouse brother Redic asked me to host his art gallery opening at his Eclectic Order Gallery Manchester (www.eclecticorder.com). Its proceeds partially benefited our alma mater Morehouse College’s Scholarship Fund.  Eclectic Order Gallery Manchester is located at 1514 W. Manchester Blvd., L.A. And Redic opened up shop with an awesome combo of spoken word, jazz, neo-soul music, rock, etc. And I just anchored the night as I do because so much of it was organic and divine. My buddy Ed Roebuck came out to support along with a number of fellows from MOCITI: MEN OF COLOR IN THE INDUSTRY. On this night, Redic - an artist; singer; songwriter; fashion designer; etc. gave the audience a sneak-peek of what was to come the following night.

"Redic Unveiled" popped off the next night… and I just had to see what he had in store. I also enrolled Morehouse brother Steven Foley, a filmmaker his own, to come and check it out.Great to see Steven and catch up on all he's working on. Stay tuned for those updates. And new buddy Derrick Garcia, dancer and choreographer, also came. And I bumped into Morehouse brother Charles Reese who is still starring in an "WHO...", an original web comedy series (WWW.AJAKWETV.COM). On this night, Redic let it all show. And the audience and the community of folks in attendance just loved it! And I love Redic and am so PROUD of him! Stay encouraged, my friend!

And one of my new L.A. ride-or-dies Javier was supposed to come on the opening night. However, he stumbled into a gig with KTLA: http://www.ktla.com/news/local/alliemackay/

It’s Christmas in September (at least for a good cause: TOYS FOR TOTS). And Javier was SANTA – making many of the folks in attendance at this benefit – held at THE ABBEY – happy to share their Christmas wish list with SANTA! He’s been in town just a few months and in addition to acting courses and auditions, he’s booking a lot of modeling work. KEEP DOIN’ IT, J!

OF COURSE, I’m missing Ant as I try to keep my days in L.A. interesting without him. But like me, he too is getting the chance to be out and about – including Serena Williams’ book launch party. There, he got to strike a pose with Kelly Rowland and others (By the way, have you heard her new song "When Love Takes Over"? I like it: YouTube - David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland - When Love Takes Over ...
).

And on “Wendy”, he got the chance to hang out with and support our girl Sheryl Lee Ralph whose ‘right hand’ Scott (not in attendance) is a dear friend of ours. In fact, Ant is coming to L.A. next week to see me and Sheryl’s DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING (www.divassimplysinging.com) which she promoted on the show along with some fab new wig looks.

And our good girlfriend Mara (as Schiavocampo from NBC) just celebrated her 30th BDAY at a New York City space I recommended to her, Taj (www.tajlounge.com). My Itika even flew in from Chicago for the occasion… and Ern and NABJ girlfriend Sia also attended along with Mara's handsome hubby Tommie. The only thing missing - I'm told - was me! LOL! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARA!

Ant’s and my buddies Troy and Darryl founded Bangin’ Ass Artists (www.banginassartists.com). I’ve blogged about them before. Well, they have a show coming up on October 10th that you don’t want to miss: TRINA BROUSSARD/RA-RE VALVERDE/RUSSELL TAYLOR. Check out the website for more info. These brothers are doing the thing to promote unheralded, independent artists with HUGE talent.

I’m always so proud of my friends when they are doing amazing things. On top of an already demanding career and family of husband and two-in-tow, my dear girlfriend (from way back in the day) Candi Carter is the creator of “It’s Hip Hop, Baby!” (www.itshiphopbaby.com/). I had the privilege of introducing her kid-focused, educational DVDs to star of my current project, Monica and her two sons. Lil Rocko and Romelo LOVED them, Monica says – so much so – that she’s agreed to say so. As Christmas nears, you may want to follow suit with Miss Monica… and pick up one or all in the special series which keeps the kids grooving while they learn their ABCs and 123s and more. Meanwhile (and I'm not saying this because I'm working on her reality project), I am SO EXCITED for Monica's new music to hit the airwaves and to see her fans (and perhaps even her doubters) FALL BACK IN LOVE with her!!! GO MONICA, GO!

As my return to NYC is still to be determined (October? November? December? Even January?): NYC CULTURE rules. Daughter of my late, great friend Pat Tobin, Lauren, continues to operate inside the excellence and professionalism of her mother (and the standard she had already begun to incorporate into her own PR brand). She reached out to me regarding her client Colman Domingo’s new stage piece “A Boy and His Soul” – which happens to be choreographed by dear friend of Ant’s and mine, Ken Roberson. Colman starred in Ant’s and my favorite Broadway musical last year, “Passing Strange”. Ant will check it out soon. I’ll hopefully get to catch it when I get back (if it’s still running). But if you are in NYC or going, make sure you check it out at the Vineyard Theater (www.vineyardtheatre.org/show-a-boy-and-his-soul.html).

So, it’s no secret that I love Tony Award winning actress Anika Noni Rose, who recently made history by being cast as the first-ever African-American princess in Disney's The Princess and the Frog. And can we say DREAMGIRLS?????? Well, she takes another dimension of step in the direction of TV as she has signed on to host the new season of AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange. It’s an innovative documentary series on contemporary life, art and pop culture in the African Diaspora, AfroPoP’s second season comes to public television in October 2009. The series is produced by the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) with which I have a little link through one of my National Association of Black Journalists Arts & Entertainment Task Force members (one of the dedicated, hard-working ones) Jacqualine Williams. She introduced them to NABJ – so NBPC could participate in our Tampa convention. Turns out that one of its programming execs Christian is an old “student” of mine from the days when I taught the New York Association of Black Journalists’ High School Journalism Workshop. So, the synergies here are really good. As the series host, Anika will introduce audiences to powerful stories about African boxers who journey across the Atlantic to match their skills against the best in global contests; a teenage girl who travels to Ghana and a Sierra Leone ex-patriate who returns to his homeland, each hoping to dispel prevailing myths about the two continents; and, Hurricane Katrina victims who find themselves refugees in their own country. CONGRATS ANIKA!

And though I’ve been behind the mic in the medium of radio before, I'm putting on a new pair of headphones as a guest on The Dr. Mario Show this week. (You’ll recall, an impression I made on XM Satellite Radio after I appeared on MILLION DOLLAR PASSWORD last year ("AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH!!!"): http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/GayleKingInterview.mp3  Well, I’m as excited to have been invited to be a guest on The Dr. Mario Show (“Your Prescription to a Better Life!”)). As I’ve blogged before, Mario is a student at Cal State Fullerton. We’ll be on the Titan Radio Station’s airwaves at 7pm on Thursday and you can find out more (including how you can listen in) via www.calldrmario.com and Dr. Mario says the show will be about me and my journey from Tokyo to Savannah and beyond – underscoring my insights that are applicable to upcoming college students and college students getting ready to step into the rest of their lives. Plus, he's got questions around networking and convention programming much like he got to witness as we met at the National Association  of Black Journalists Convention where Mario saw me in super-active pose. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences and reminding myself some of the tips that I may have taken for granted along the way. This, towards getting my CENTER back. My CHI is still off, though I'm carrying on...

Well, as my former colleague Frankie offers: “… the morale of the story is…” (just that part. The rest attributes Donnie McClurkin…): "...After you've done all you can, you just STAND..."

And GOD continues to work it out via his many earth angels like Ant, Mario, Audrey, Paul, Sidra, Jav, etc. AMEN! <not out of the woods but breathing better, hear?>
