PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!

DESIGN OF A DECADE

DECADE ENDER

Prior to attending the Erykah Badu listening party a couple of weeks ago, NBC Digital Correspondent and friend Mara Schiavocampo invited me to 30 Rockefeller Center to offer on-camera pop culture analysis to a piece she was working on for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams (on-line) and MSNBC. (You’ll recall, Mara had me weigh in on Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama when – in Iowa – he and the now-First-Lady Michelle Obama expressed their bond via THE POUND: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXc6x5JlJuw. That piece was the most-watched video on MSN for the lion’s share of 2008. I take credit for it. But perhaps my buddy Obama had something to do with it as well.). Since then, I’ve been invited back a couple of times – including this currrent decade ender piece that will be running on MSNBC this week: all day New Year's Eve (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pYKZBjEx40). I am blessed to more-and-more be able to bring my on-camera/personality center stage – including the recent Disney event I hosted which introduced “The Princess & The Frog” to the National Association of Black Journalists for the first time: http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/NABJDisneyMagic.wmvhttp://216.117.188.141/PRiley/NABJDisneyMagic.wmv.

HOLIDAY PARTY TRAIN

But I have more current things to reflect on than the whole decade. My long-time friend Carl convinced me to come out and play as we haven’t hung out in a minute. It was the holiday party for my favorite boutique N, which is now in a new location on Lenox Avenue (between 118th and 119th Streets). Since Ant had left for Denver to be with his family and had already packed, I figured one more social round in NYC before I leave to be with my fam in Savannah for Christmas couldn’t hurt. With toy in hand (as it was a benefit), I pulled myself together and am glad I did. It was for charity), I went into the city to see some folks I hadn't seen since returning from L.A. (including Carl). Not only was it good to see Carl but it was GREAT to meet his sister Sharon’s baby boy Nelson who we’ve nicknamed “The Miracle Baby”. Also, my L.A. earth angel (now-back-in-Harlem) Sidra was in the house along with Murphy. And it wouldn’t be the “N” party without the faces behind the brand: Lenn, Larry, Nikoa, and my buddy Jamar. Also in the house: my Morehouse brother Michael James who owns the grooming line Frederick Benjamin: http://www.frederickbenjamin.com; Devon Christopher, Harlem entrepreneur: Publisher of BLEU Magazine and co-owner of Atomic Wings - also in Harlem. I just celebrated its 1st Anniversary (with Ant, Brian, and Kelli): http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/12/21/and-this-christmas-will-be-a-very-special-christmas.html; we also stopped by the home of Carl's old neighbor Mike Bianco for espresso (imported from Italy). And The N holiday party after party was also in Harlem at 67 Orange Street bar/lounge. This is Kevin Reed, a fan of my blog before we actually met a few months back. Awesome guy! Patti LaBelle's renowned music director/pianist John Stanley was also in attendance... and it was great to meet him after admiring his work for many years. Nice fellow.

CHRISTMAS EVE

And even when the night glitters, the toilet can get stopped up and, hey, it doesn’t smell like roses. But my super Danny came to the rescue on Christmas Eve in the wake of my much-later-night-than-I-intended at the holiday parties. This, as I'm pulling it together to get to the airport in just over one hour. YIKES! Though Ant packed for me, I was reminded of things I didn't want to forget i.e. my IPOD, chargers, toiletries, etc. Plus, I wanted to pare down some of his selects with the luggage specs in mind – from check-in fees to weight. Based on what was in my pocket, I wanted to ensure I could carry on. Once all that was done, my driver/Godchild's father Owen was awaiting to take me to the airport. Plus, I wanted to give him my gifts for Godchild Owen Angelo. But I got the Christmas gift: Owen Angelo (and his mom Sandy) came along for the ride. Owen Angelo was so happy to receive his gifts and gave me lots of love and hugs for his Disney goodies.

HOME SWEET HOME! SAVANNAH

Once home in Savannah (after a layover in Charlotte: CHEAPEST FLIGHT), my nephew picked me up and took me to his parents' place. Though now a FORTUNE 500 exec (soon to call NYC home after he graduates my alma mater Morehouse in May), my nephew is still my go-for and chauffer. He provided me his laptop to go over some notes in my inbox. Plus, he warmed his father (my brother) and me up some of their leftovers (including RED kool aid). From there, I did get home to my Dad and his wife Diana’s home (which too is my childhood home). And it’s always nice to be home in the bed and basking in all things nostalgic.

CHRISTMAS WEEKEND

The pictures are gonna have to speak the 1,000 words as Savannah was humping and pumping for my three days there:http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=134128&id=662073736&l=97f21ad04a.

Diana prepared an awesome Southern breakfast on Christmas morning.

Then, we opened gifts once my sister arrived.

Though knocking on 40, I’m still “the baby” and love to open gifts and get something. This year, ‘cash’ was ‘king’… and much needed. But it was also great to see the joy on Dad & Diana's faces as they opened their gifts.

My late mother Queen Elizabeth Bellinger Riley’s side of the family always gathers at her only sibling/sister Mary Lee’s house or – in recent years – the home of Mary Lee’s daughter/my cousin Felecia’s house.

As tradition goes, we interview new boyfriends/girlfriends… and in this case… fiances – including Felecia’s baby girl/Navy woman Kea’s new man Roc who passed my interview with flying colors.

They are getting married New Year’s Day (right after the strike of midnight). CONGRATS!

Also, Felecia’s oldest child Demaris (Dee Dee, we call her) and her husband Chris now have a little girl Meagan.

And she just loved her cousin Patrick’s “The Princess & The Frog” gift.

I also gave an incarnation of the royal gift package to cousin Bozo (Kejuanna’s daughter Leilani).

And Auntee Mary Lee was waxing and relaxing in her new recliner which her kids Lecia & Tabby bought her.

We all gathered at her home the next day to clear the way for the chair.

It was so exciting to go through the old pictures and documents and uncover awesome things about our family history.

After that wonderful stop, we went to my Auntee Goldie’s house. She is my Dad’s sister and holds the fort for the Riley family. She made sure I got my “chitterlings” on… and they were delicious as always. (DON’T JUDGE ME! LOL!).

Given my Dad’s brother Uncle Bobby just passed away and many of us gathered for his homegoing a couple of months ago, it was great to be together again. We got to fill in the rest of the family who couldn’t attend the funeral on how special the ceremony was (and Uncle Bobby’s life and influence in Pontiac, MI). After all, that milestone reminded all of us why we should be proud to call ourselves R-I-L-E-Y. And while Daddy and Diana went to his high school reunion gala (Woodville Tompkins), I got to hang out with my other family, THE MAYNORS (the clan from which my New Jersey neighbor and best friend since 7th grade Ern hails). Ern and his siblings invited me out to hang with them. I’ve always been the 6th – slightly darker (before color correction) – sibling in the MAYNOR mix.

… and now I’m home. Still need to land some steady work but am trusting the top of the year to introduce some opportunities. Plus, for inspiration (as my multi-hyphenated talents go), I have:

* My girlfriend JACQUE REID who is one of the co-stars on VH1's reality show

"Lets Talk About Pep" [The 'urban Sex and the City']. SEE THE TRAILER HERE:  http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?id=1628583&vid=466420

Most importantly, tune in to the premiere on January 11th at 10:30pm on VH1!

* My girlfriend RICHELLE TAYLOR who has written her book “DISCOVERING WHO YOU REALLY ARE” – a book for African American women with universal appeal for all as the search for self-discovery goes. www.communitylinksmagazine.com

* My diva SHERYL LEE RALPH who brings us "singin' and swingin' into the 2010" at Upright Cabaret! The Film, Television and Broadway star SHERYL LEE RALPH (Sister Act 2, The Flintstones, OBC of Dreamgirls) brings three rare solo cabaret performances (including one on her birthday). She takes you on a musical journey of songs you will love from Broadway show-stoppers to R&B including songs from Dreamgirls! Ms. Ralph has captivated audiences for many years and has used her talent to raise money and awareness for HIV/AIDS related charities. "Simply Sheryl Lee" is your chance to get up close and personal with this smart, sexy and brilliantly talented songstress as she continues to raise money for the Diva (AIDS) Foundation.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

"...AND THIS CHRISTMAS WILL BE A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS..."

I’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

The good news is Ant & I figured out a way to spend Christmas with our respective families in Denver and Savannah. Unfortunately we will do it separately. I took him to airport this morning. I'm leaving Thursday for GA. Ant would like me to come ring in New Year's with he and his peeps in Denver but we'll accept a windfall/hookup if that is to be. Otherwise, Ant and I will reconnect when he returns from Denver at the top of the year. And we’ll make the best of the distance during a holiday to which we are used to spending together. FOR NEXT YEAR: We DECLARE WIN-WIN all around: stops by each of our homes… and something TROPICAL or EUROPEAN to boot. MARK MY WORDS!

Meanwhile, as we look ahead to greener pastures (the fiscal kind), we’re doing the best we can to manage life – calling joy forth as much as we can.

MY FAVORITE THINGS

Well, now that THE PRINCESS & THE FROG is doing so well at the box office, I'm reminded that back in August of this year, I got the chance to introduce Disney's first African American princess to the National Association of Black Journalists. I hosted an event that featured the voice of Princess Tiana, Anika Noni-Rose; additionally, we presented the first Princess Tiana (who will meet & greet at Disney's amusement parks). And we previewed the first 30 minutes of the animated wonder. See an excerpt of that night on this link: http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/NABJDisneyMagic.wmv.

 TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY

My Amazing Grace Nichole brought TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY to all of her friends this weekend. She threw a HOLIDAY PARTY at her New Rochelle home. Her many friends from the neighborhood (and beyond) came. Also, her sister Tori came up from DC to showcase and sell her beautiful art (from paintings to greeting cards). AWESOME NIGHT ALL AROUND!

IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME IN THE CITY

My friends Brian and Kelli came to NYC from L.A. (where they often hosted me while I was out there). From West Village's The Path Cafe to brunch at The Garage to karaoke at our spot... to Atomic Wings 1st anniversary (our boy Devon Christopher’s spot) to Harlem hanging, we had a GREAT TIME! And Brian and Kelli also took Ant and me out on the town again later in the week. CAFETERIA for dinner. BAR 89 in SOHO afterward. KARAOKE night cap. Always FUN! We got to meet Kelli’s law school friends John and Emily.

A VERY SPECIAL SEASON

Had a great night of spiritual renewal and love with Ant, Nichole, Monica, and my family at MOMENTUM (www.momentumeducation.com). It was good to reconnect to such a rich work – including being with my LEADERSHIP buddies David and Judy again. This adult education sequence continues to nurture our choices and ways of being in this life. Extra LOVE for MOMENTUM’s founder Robin Lynn.

(SHOPPING) BAG LADY

Popular blog YBF is abuzz about Erykah Badu's new music (http://theybf.com/index.php/2009/12/16/music-fab-sade-erykah-badu-kanye-west/). I blogged about attending her NYC listening set at the end of last week (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/12/11/every-man-has-his-own-special-dream.html). Now my nephew – a YBF aficionado – will know about it! LOL!

PARTIES FOR HOSTING

Ant's and my buddies Ra-Fael and rah-B threw a holiday set to thank their many industry friends for support with their publicity firm 2Rs Entertainment & Media, Inc. (www.2RSENTANDMEDIA.com). HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Our friend Ulysses Carter (who works Miss Whitney Houston's publicity) was there. MIGUEL PERDOMO - Male Supermodel - Recipient of 2009 Gillette Fusion Man of Style Award - is one of 2Rs star clients… and always a lot of fun to be around. L.A. actor Kairon John was also in the house as well as dear friend/BLEU Publisher Devon Christopher.

On another night, Ant & I got caught in the blizzard after hanging out with friend Will. He inspired an impromptu set at the Harlem brownstone of our beloved Tommie. This, along with his brilliant wife, our Emmy-award-winning friend, Mara Schiavocampo. This, after checking out our girlfriend Cy's holiday tree. It’s been most uplifting for Ant and me to be around loved ones.

SILENT NIGHT

Before I could pull myself together from this Brittany Murphy news (Dead at 32), I uncover that sitcom icon RIP Alaina Reed Hall (Rose from 227 & Olivia from Sesame Street) passed away this weekend of breast cancer @ 65. RIP. Remember the 227 theme song? 227 Theme Song.Trying not to wait for the 3rd pop cultural shoe to drop, but in my personal life, I want to extend my condolences to my girlfriend Cristal whose father Dwight transitioned last week. Ern and I got to attend the funeral and extend our love to Cristal, her mother Sheila, and the rest of the family with whom we’ve spent lots of time (at their gorgeous getaway in the Poconos).

THIS CHRISTMAS

"EVERY MAN HAS HIS OWN SPECIAL DREAM..."

LOVE

Ant and I celebrated our 4th anniversary the other day. We consider the first day we met the day because our lives would be forever changed. It was the opening night of “The Color Purple” (which – by the way – is coming to NJPAC in Newark and you can get a $25 price break using code "25URBAN" at the website). On that day in 2005, Ant was covering the red carpet for STARZ! I was covering it as well. My friend Mario introduced us at the after party. And the rest is history. As we continue to budget the little we have right now, we didn’t plan on exchanging gifts. But Ant surprised me with a card that reads: "I'm so glad I found you - the one I can TRUST to dream my dreams with me...the one who UNDERSTANDS my deepest feelings...the one who KNOWS me and loves me as I really am...You're everything I ever hoped for in a PARTNER, all that I need in a friend, and all I ever wanted in someone to love.  HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!” Did Ashford & Simpson write that? LOL! I guess you see why it’s easy for me to wade through the minimum wages of a couple of temp gigs. There’s something PRICELESS at home as we build ABUNDANCE! Oh! Per a Ralph Lauren sample sale, he gifted me an awesome, white, brushed cotton jacket that fits as if it was tailored and a cute pair of green corduroys. WHAT CAN I SAY? He’s a keeper!

FRIENDS

Ant and I had the luxury of both working in the city one day recently and we were able to have a lovely (but quick) lunch at Blockhead’s with Manivone and our girlfriend Camille, who lives mostly abroad. In fact, Camille was straight off a plane from Ghana (and is soon en route to Beijing). She and I got to spend more time with Ant and some of his co-workers at 'Wendy' (Talia and Aleeka). A little BBQ. A little karaoke. Also, Camille and I got to hang out with our friend Omar. You remember Omar. He did that great tux for me some years ago when I hosted an event for Disney and Steve Harvey absolutely LOVED the tux. OMAR - at that time - was one of the vendors at the old N, my favorite boutique:

* OMAR & N - PPU 1/5

* (BLUE) "THAT'S THE NEW COLOR, CHILDREN"

Well, he has remixed his brand and is now doing a line (ROAM New York) for HSN (http://www.hsn.com/). And he goes on air to sell his goods:

* ROAM NEW YORK Westside V-Neck Top with Multicolor Sash

* ROAM NEW YORK Village Ribbed Knit Leggings

* ROAM NEW YORK Greenwich 2-Tone Cozy Cardigan

* ROAM NEW YORK Empire State Lace-Print Turtleneck Tunic

* ROAM NEW YORK Uptown Embellished Tunic

* ROAM NEW YORK LES Foldover Pants

* ROAM NEW YORK West Side Long-Sleeve Top

* ROAM NEW YORK Uptown Embellished Tunic

* ROAM NEW YORK SoHo Cocoon Shrug

* ROAM NEW YORK Downtown Beaded Scoop-Neck Top

* ROAM NEW YORK Bleeker Draped Cardigan

* ROAM NEW YORK Murray Hill Cardigan

His next appearance on HSN is December 19th. After that, he's booked in February, March, and May.

MY NEPHEW

Also, over this last week and change, I was most excited to see my nephew Herman Lee Riley III (for a brief moment) as he was flown here to NYC for an interview (a potential gig for after he graduates my alma mater Morehouse College in May). Too, in the Spring, he's one of 16 Business-major seniors at my alma mater who travels to England, Ireland, and Scotland. SO PROUD I AM!

2009 OUT MUSIC AWARDS

Ant and I went to the 2009 Out Music Awards in NYC at Webster Hall – such a sign that I am home as I saw so many of my best friends from the industry and beyond. Nominee and good buddy Demarco Majors was in the house. Here are my buddies Ra-Fael DeBlanco (publicist extraordinaire) and Luke Burke (producer extraordinaire).  And my Terry Wynn who is like a little brother to me. Co-host for the night Kate Clinton steered the night alongside Rodney Chester of "Noah's Arc" fame. And my friend Publisher of BLEU Magazine Devon Christoper was there along with Kimberly Nichole with whom I sang on the same stage for the Ashford & Simpson tribute at Gospel Uptown: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/11/30/entertainment-exclusive-2-get-your-tickets-to-see-pieces-of.html.

And my Momentum buddies Sage Rivera (far left) and members of VOGUE Evolution dancers ("America's Best Dance Crew") were there. And of course, Ant’s and my friend Richard Pelzer (President & Founder of MEGA Management) invited Ant and me: VIP. He too blogs: The MEGA World of Lil Mogul - www.TheFutureForward.net. Here Ant and I pose with our friend Toyce who recently attended the BDAY party that Ant threw for me a couple of weeks ago. And another highlight: Benny Ninja - the FIERCE one who you may know from America's Next Top Model.

ERYKAH BADU

Ant, his co-worker Talia, and I went to Erykah Badu’s listening session at Chung King Studios in Manhattan. She played tracks from her upcoming CD: "New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ahnk‏". The new material is a SONIC SMORGASBORD! CLASSIC ERYKAH INSIDE HER CURRENT FREQUENCY - ALL AT ONCE! Corinne Bailey Rae was there... and let me know she has a new album coming out in February. And it was nice to sit in a studio with the lights off… incense burning… and Erykah Badu waxing philosophical on all things music and life and love. Ant is a big BADU fan. Too, he modeled alongside Badu in the April 2008 issue of ESSENCE Magazine. And he got to attend a similar listening experience when her first project in this multi-tier volume was released: "... CUP RUNNETH OVER...".

HUSTLE

So my hustle continues for work. Took some great meetings over these last few days. I put my pop culture analysis hat on(-camera) for a piece that will run on NBC Nightly News & MSNBC by year's end (Stay tuned). In the wake of my debut contribution last year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXc6x5JlJuw), glad they still call from time to time. Too, I met some folks at USA Network about some opportunities. And I’m closing in on a project that will bring in some revenue during the holidays. So, stay tuned for that.

BASKETBALL WIVES

I went to a 'Wendy' taping for the first time since its pick-up as I’ve been away. I took rare advantage of my access since Ant works for the hit talk show. This, to say HI to my buddy (and Executive Producer of VH1 reality show "Basketball Wives") Shaunie O'Neal (who mouths "..Hi Patrick!..." in her 2nd segment before she and Wendy continue their dish. I'm sitting in 2nd row admiring her class, poise, and graciousness (Oh! And her fierce, red FENDI heels. LOL!). A new, slim, trim ANGIE STONE was the musical guest. And after her song ("I Ain't Hearin' You"), she and Wendy talked all things new weave, D'Angelo, and waistlines, etc. OVERALL, great show! www.wendyshow.com

DREAMGIRLS: DÉJÀ VU

After 'Wendy', had two promising meetings regarding 'new business'. From there, another round of "Dreamgirls" at The Apollo, compliments of my Tata. Then, I joined Ant and his 'Wendy' colleagues for post-their-holiday-work-party karaoke.

Will decide this weekend if: I’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS! I sure hope so…

ROY AYERS performed four BRILLIANT sets this weekend at GOSPEL UPTOWN. Ant and I got to check out the MASTER for one of the shows. The packed house was not only met with an awesome show (I was taking notes). But also, we got the lovely experience of a contemporary ‘supper club’ with great food and cocktails (as overseen by Executive Chef Kenneth Collins). ROY AYERS mentioned in his set that he loves “The Wendy Williams Show”. So, I made sure to tell him Ant works for the show, which made him giggle and say “How You Doin’?”.

On this Friday and Saturday, December 4th and 5th, jazz group PIECES OF A DREAM is performing. So, please go check them out!

Meanwhile, I got my turn on the “Gospel Uptown” stage. I got the chance to sing TO Ashford & Simpson. I performed my favorite Diana Ross number "The Boss" which the dynamic duo wrote. And this legendary duo responded so graciously - standing on their feet with gratitude and enthusiasm. I'M SO BLESSED to have been able to share with them how much their talent and repertoire have meant to me. Big THANKS to producers and hosts Kevin-Anthony and Darius Booker for having me on the set. Also, a big shout out to Ashford & Simpson’s musicians and singers with whom I got the chance to bond in rehearsals earlier that week. One of the singers, Clayton, was my doppelganger for all of the high notes that “The Boss” requires. We blended brilliantly! I truly had a BALL on that stage. And I plan to do more performing come 2010.

But I wasn’t the only one letting Ashford & Simpson know how important they are to our lives. As singing is a sidelight for me, there were so many on that stage who do this for a living. And boy did they do it… for the living of Ashford & Simpson. My buddy Gordon Chambers wailed on an “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” with Amanda Brown. American Idol’s Anwar Robinson did “Reach Out & Touch (Somebody’s Hand)”. And Miss Melonie Daniels and Ryan Shaw turned out “You’re All I Need (To Get By)”. And on and on and on and on…

And they made sure that we got our THANKS from them - including an impromptu "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing".

And so many of my friends came out to support me (as well as to participate in this special honor for Ashford & Simpson). Two of my favorite people: Sidra Smith and Ken Roberson. Good to be back on the same coast with Sid. And Tony-calibre choreographer and performer Ken Roberson gave me a wonderful post-performance salute. Just what I needed to hear! And buddies Erich and Murphy were in the house along with my posse: Tata, Ern, and Ant.

Tata, who’d been out of town amidst my ‘birthday extravaganza’, just got back and made it her business to be in the house with me. We even joined Ant’s friend Manivone prior for BBQ and Dunkin Donuts. Afterwards, Ant, Ern, and I did some celebratory karaoke for what was a DREAM COME TRUE – to be singing for two of my favorites. And then if you add DIANA ROSS into the equation, I can’t process it all. Just too much! And such an ABUNDANT BLESSING!

This week offered lots for which to be grateful. It was THANKSGIVING after all. As Ant and I house-sat for our Mara and Tommie in their Harlem brownstone, we got to enjoy Thanksgiving brunch at IHOP in Harlem in the morning with our Momentum Education friend Ruben. Great to catch up with him!  Then, Ant and I were invited to dine on a delicious Thanksgiving meal at our girlfriends Charlie T and Danielle's place. They had a few other great friends in the house - including Maurice Runea and Sekiya. The food was great. Company even better. And we watched Beyonce's special as well. GO B!!!!

So I am STILL STANDING! Today, however, feet back on ground, I gotta land something quick and fast. Will temp for two days this week in anticipation of a 'green light' on a proposal I just submitted for a project that could keep revenue flowing through December. And of course, I'm taking all calls, meetings, auditions to land something that I'm hosting and running (including lots of brainstorming with Ant on proposals, treatments, and such around projects we will develop ourselves). Send a prayer up!

And as GOD’S WONDERS ABOUND THROUGHOUT MY SOCIAL NETWORK, let me send A FEW SHOUT OUTS to friends who are leading EXTRAORDINARY LIVES in their respective, hustling lanes:

My friend Ceci (who I met through Kim Coles) was the wardrobe stylist on “Living Single”. She’s still styling and now organizing people’s lives. One of her latest style credits can be seen on YOU TUBE as she styled the Michelle Obama impersonator in this video: “Obama Does Thriller” - http://www.youtube.com/user/VernettaJenkins#p/a. CONGRATS CECI!

My girl Erica Watson is featured in “Precious”. Just one scene but a POWERFUL ONE with PUNCH. She’s been performing her one woman show “Fat Bitch” which will run in February 2010 at Time Square's Laurie Beechman Theater, presented by SpinCycle NYC (the production team that is currently producing "Joan Rivers Live"). And she will be featured in the January 2010 Essence Magazine, "Dating & Relationships" section, about how being plus-sized affects dating. She also just shot "Secret Celebrity Weddings," airing on the WE Channel next spring before the new season of "Bridezillas," commenting on the extreme things celebrities will do to try to keep their weddings top secret. So, how many times have you heard me talk about my good girlfriend/Amazing Grace Audrey Irvine? Lots, right? And many anecdotes that keep us laughing to this day. Moreover, she’s truly one of my dearest friends ever. Like, ride or die! Professionally, Audrey is a senior assignment manager for CNN. But her sparkle and gift of great storytelling has shown through to her employer which now has assigned her a weekly column on WWW.CNN.COM: "Relationship Rant" (http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/personal/11/18/rrants.dating.dealbreakers/index.html). Check back every week for her take on dating and relationships.

Have you seen Ya Ya – runner up on “America’s Next Top Model” (Eva’s Cycle) on “Ugly Betty”? She’s playing Nikko, the daughter of Vanessa Williams’ character Wilheimena Slater. GO YA YA!

So, I’m back in New York City. And as my current project, BIG REALITY HIT ‘Monica: Still Standing’, roles out for all of you to see on BET, I am looking for my WHAT’S NEXT? [DEVELOPMENTS FORTHCOMING… WILL WORK FOR FOOD!]. Of course, I am going to be extending my BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA for as far and long as anyone will celebrate with me. SMILE! That includes my next couple of weekends at GOSPEL UPTOWN (HTTP://WWW.GOSPELUPTOWN.COM).

This Friday, November 27th & 28th, the legendary Roy Ayers will be performing at GOSPEL UPTOWN. More than a Mary J. Blige-sample (of “My Life”), Roy Ayers’ repertoire is respected the world over for its clever fusion of jazz, R&B, soul, and disco. This superb vibraphonist started out as a solid hard bop musician, but he quickly upped the soul and disco elements of his sound, and his sophisticated music became an uptown pop staple of disco-era black America. What better backdrop than GOSPEL UPTOWN to enjoy a laid-back ‘holiday weekend’ like no other. (HTTP://WWW.GOSPELUPTOWN.COM).

Then, next Friday, December 4th & 5th, also legendary Pieces of A Dream performs. This group has taken on many roster incarnations over the years. They are based out of Philadelphia and launched onto the scene in 1976. Keyboardist James Lloyd, drummer Curtis Harmon and former bassist Cedric Napoleon, were (and still are) managed by the drummer’s father and uncle, Danny and Bill Harmon, respectively. The group based their name on Pieces of Dreams, a cover tune by Stanley Turrentine that the group performed. And they’ve worked with so many special artist over the years: the late Grover Washington Jr.; guitarist Ronny Jordan; vocalist Maysa Leak; saxophonists Kenny Blake; and Gerald Albright (who along with Michael Bearden fronted remakes of Diana Ross’ ‘Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To?)’ and ‘Upside Down’. Meanwhile, as my birthday knocked up against my last day in L.A., I had celebrating to do there and here… and Ant really hooked it up!

1. Before I left L.A., my friend and co-worker on all-thing-‘Frankie-&-Neffe’&’Monica’-over-the-last-eight-months Shareen took me to lunch in Larchmont.  My friend Eliah Mountjoy had been recommending since I first arrived. We had Village Pizzeria pizza… and great conversation!

 2. Then, my Tony and Scott (along with Michelle) continued the party with an awesome dinner (and cocktails) at Cliff’s Edge in Los Feliz. They made sure that I didn't come into my birthday alone. We were in festive pose (though a work night). And I am totally grateful to them!

3. Then, as soon as I got back to NYC: ANT had secured tix to my favorite Broadway property “DREAMGIRLS” – running at THE APOLLO.

This is a new version that will soon go on the road… and includes the incorporation of “Listen” (from the movie) as a duet between Deena and Effie. Some critics aren’t happy with the new staging of “DREAMGIRLS”.

I must say I enjoy all incarnations and this cast – as led by American Idol’s Syesha Mercado and blog friend Chester Gregory – entertained me as well.

But most excitedly, Ant and I got to share in the fun with my Michael K. Watts, my DREAMGIRLS enthusiasts Lee, Devon, and Mario.

Of course, DREAMGIRLS just rips at the heart of my Devon and me. And Henry Krieger who wrote mostly all of the music for original stage production and the film was also there. Ant interviewed him a few years back when the movie DREAMGIRLS came out and he was an associate producer at STARZ! in Denver. Ant came up with a concept UPSTAGE! for the cable network which flew him up here to NYC many times to explore adaptations like 'DREAMGIRLS' and 'THE COLOR PURPLE' which is the night Ant and I met. So BROADWAY is in the blood of our relationship. SMILE!

4. After DREAMGIRLS, Mario joined Ant and me for Ant's 'big sister' Candice Harper's vocal set at Uncle Charlie's.  Candice has an awesome voice. So sweet, melodic, and tells a story that you want to hear when she opens her mouth. She even graciously invited me up to take the mic on a couple of numbers: Color Purple's "What About Love" and Mariah Carey's "Love Takes Time". Candice and her music director Michael invited me to do my own set there one night. As I’ve been declaring that I want to do more intimate evenings of song, this – for sure – fulfills that. Thanks Candice!

5. Then, Ant, Mario, and I went to The Overlook Lounge. It was a BDAY drink for old times sake from Mario's and my old friend Mark followed by a pop through HK and SECRET to celebrate with my bday-sake Tony.

6. SWAN SONG: Amy Ruth... and home to crash.

7. Then, Saturday, we slept late and Ant took me to brunch at Serafina! Then, we went next door to FELA on BROADWAY for matinee with my ‘Amazing Grace’ Nichole and her friend Charles. WHAT A SENSATIONAL SHOW! VIBRANT! COLORFUL! MUSICAL! And a HISTORY LESSON to BOOT! Run and get your TIX. My girlfriend Marcia Pendleton hooked ours up… and you can get some discount fares if you go to: www.broadwayoffers.com CODE IS: FEWTG93. It was so great to be back in a theater (two times in as many days). And nice to run into folks - including Ant's 'Wendy Williams' co-worker Lorraine who you may see from time to time on the show during Wendy's hot topics segment(s).

8. Then, Ant and I went to girlfriend Mara and her husband Tommie's place for PRE-PARTY. And as one of the top things for which I have to be grateful includes Ant, he and I are experiencing another frequency of domesticity as we housesit (and Ant dog-sits) our good girlfriend Mara and her husband Tommie’s two dogs and a cat while they are on the road for Thanksgiving. Given I just got back from a long stretch in L.A., the last thing I wanted to do was regroup an over-week stay somewhere else, but as we enjoy the Harlem Brownstone and – dare I say – Mara and Tommie’s “kids”, this experiment is giving us – perhaps – a glimpse at our WHAT’S NEXT?

9. Then, it was time for the BIG KARAOKE BIRTHDAY! So many came out to SHOW LOVE; SERENADE ME; and hear me SING! WE HAD A BLAST as so many of Ant’s and my family, friends, and co-workers joined in on the fun that is karaoke. Newlyweds Danni and Bernard joines us - just a couple of months after their beautiful island wedding. My buddy Ted Gibson, hairstylist for the stars - incuding Angelina Jolie - was in the house. I'll be telling you more about Ted and his partner Jason when "The Real Housewives of DC" comes on.    All my New Rochelle friends were in the house. My Teri and her husband Alvin to - of course - Nichole and her girlfriends Michelle; and Cynthia; and Monica. And the husbands and new beaus came too - from a "sanging" Nelson to Brian. They all seemed to have a great time including Ant's co-worker Bobby and Ant's Aunt Linda and cousin Shantay - here singing a duet with him.  . See many more pictures from MY AWESOME BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA AT:PART 1: BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA 2009... and PART 2: BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA. And Ant and I - of course - got our songs in! Afterwards, Ant and I joined our friend Andrea at SECRET for more drinks and dancing. This, before we grabbed a bite at THE WAVERLY and headed back to Jersey.

10. And on Sunday, Ant and I joined ERN for dinner at HOUSTON’s (on my Original Amazing Grace Natalie and her husband Dwayne and the girls). After our prized meal, we enjoyed The American Music Awards – channeling the days of yore – with Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and a host of inspiring – for once-in-a-long-while – performances.

And as I drop back into the REAL WORLD, I must find some new opportunities that will bring in some revenue that support us in keeping things afloat – including more on-camera work and pop culture analysis. With my contribution to ‘Monica’ wrapped a hair earlier than I expected and many other clients on winter break (and still not enough time for reserves to build back up, though things are kinda’ on-time), the next couple of months are key for my WHAT’S NEXT! But I’m excited that folks are drawn to my branding as on-camera talent; pop culture blogger/analyst; etc. (and for a price… if just credit and partnership) – including promoters for ‘Gospel Uptown’ and producer for the CUNY-TV show (Channel 75) Abi Ishola who is working on a show that covers the ethnic media and ethnic communities. She is working on a profile about Ebony and Jet magazines. This story will accompany a studio segment in which the financial troubles at Johnson Publishing will be discussed. In her profile, she wants to explore the cancellation of Ebony Fashion Fair, and as she researched, she found herself drawn to my commentary on the issue (with Black America Web and my blog: "...I'VE WAITED SO LONG TO HEAR YOU SAY THAT TO ME! SAY IT AGAIN! SAY IT AGAIN!..."). So, I went and was interviewed by her… and will be on “Independent Sources” at the top of December. I’ll send the clip to you guys when it’s done. Continued THANKS for your support and prayers as I navigate this career of mine. And SHOUT OUT to ALL OF YOU who PRAYED me back home!

P.S. And we’ll still always have L.A.:

"L.A. PROVED TOO MUCH FOR THE MAN..."

"PRECIOUS" MEMORIES...HOW THEY LINGER IN MY SOUL!

"YOU KEEP PRAYING, SAYING THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY..."
