PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!

"PARTIES, PREMIERES, SUPERMARKET OPENINGS..."

·

Ant and I attended BLEU Magazine ( www.thebleumag.com/ ) Publisher Devon Christopher’s BDAY PARTY at GLASS ( www.glassloungenyc.com ). Always good to see my boys. Toyce was in the house – updating us on some of his new, creative pursuits. Stay tuned.

My AUC homeboy Seitu was in the mix. Always good to see him.

And Derrick Briggs of ADTV fame ( www.watchadtv.com ) and co-star for the upcoming film ( www.thanks4findingme.com).

And the business team that manages BLEU – Richard Pelzer ( www.MEGAManagementInc.com ) was in the house. He captured Ant and me… like this:

.  Also, Rafael De-Blanco (www.2RsEntandMedia.com ) is responsible for making sure we were in the house for this event.

And he was responsible for yet another event several days later that launched his new website.

He and his business partner Rah-B Welch (who too was celebrating a birthday) represent an impressive cartel of fashionistas and tastemakers.

There's Miss “ America ’s Next Top Model” Nic (who is always of gracious and fun).

Miguel Perdomo (who I adore and talk about all the time here in the blog) was in the house and we hear has just signed on with Sean John and Remy Martin.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

And we got to meet their new client Maya Azucena – storytelling lyricist and soulful, soaring vocalist with such a wonderful personality (www.mayaazucena.com )· It too was great to see our good girlfriend - part owner of my favorite boutique N (www.nharlemnewyork.com/) - Nikoa!

After that set, Ant and I got the chance to do dinner at Maroon's with our sponsor for the night, Theo and a Denver-based friend Ant and I met through Ant’s best friend Manivone Ikey who we hipped to the now-closed Broadway musical "Passing Strange".

Since he was soon to leave NYC to wrap up school in Oklahoma, he wanted to get together with us - so we could compare notes on the life-changing musical. After Maroon's, we all joined Ant's and my friend Ruben and several of our other buddies from Momentum Education ( www.momentumeducation.com ) at a loft set in downtown Manhattan for some social time, which has been blending into my business everywhere I go.

  • For example, I took a recent meeting with entertainment wheeler and dealer Terrance Russ. He chose his spot - Osteria Del Circo ( www.osteriadelcirco.com/ ), which was elegant and well-appointed. We dined al fresco as evidenced by this picture taken by our table neighbor Jim Ball, chef and owner of L’enfant Cafe & Bar' in DC ( www.lenfantcafe.com/ ). After our catch up, our evening got a little long in the tooth (I should have gone home), but we folded Ant into the mix (after he got off work) and did a round-up of social stops. First, The Maritime Hotel ( www.themaritimehotel.com ) for more cocktails. Then, karaoke at our spot ( www.karaoke17.com/ ). Then, a little SPLASH afterwards ( www.splashbar.com ). Fun night!
  • I also got another social-but-business-like invitation from my good industry girlfriend Renee Warren with Noelle-Elaine Media Consultants (She’s the Elaine in the company name): www.noelle-elaine.com/aboutus.html . Her latest client is Marc Edwards, founder of new internet phenomenon Tribefly ( www.tribefly.com ). Over Mexican goodies from Mazmezcal ( www.mazmezcal.com/ ), Marc explained how it all works. As my nephew put it, it’s a “cross-cultural facebook” that allows the ‘culturally curious’ to share and communicate in a special space. The international travelers that Ant and I are... and aim to continue being... this site will come in handy!!!

"BUTTERFLIES BEGIN FROM HAVING BEEN ANOTHER..."

I mentioned being inspired by HBO’s “BLACKLIST” ( www.hbo.com/docs/docuseries/theblacklist/index.html ) – not just for its content but inside of how its stylistic flow is a good template for what my “Big Willies & Amazing Graces: gay men and their best girlfriends” could be – as a book (and a documentary). I am still shopping for this book deal (with my literary agent Robert Guinsler at Sterling Lord Literistic)...and you all know how much I love my "Amazing Graces". From Nat (the OAG, she calls herself - "Original Amazing Grace") to my Nichole who is my sister away from my sister here in New York City. And of course, there are the oh-so-many other ladies in my life whose relationships I hold so near and dear as there is nothing like the unique relationship between a gay man and a straight woman... and TRUST ME, it's more than shopping, interior design, hair and beauty, and those categories we sometimes myopically attach to the bond. "Big Willies & Amazing Graces: gay men and their best girlfriends" is a book that will celebrate the depth and the diverse array of levity that exists inside of these special bonds. More comprehensively, it is a collection of conversations between men and women who fit that paradigm. I've already interviewed a couple dozen pairings for this project, but am now seeking to fold more high-profile folks into the mix (Already, comic actress MO'NIQUE; Tony-award-winning actress LACHANZE [from 'The Color Purple']; and Tony-award-winning producer/actress Tamara Tunie have committed to contribute). With that, I attended a friend and colleague Janet Lee’s cocktail party which also represented the launch of her business LIVING IN A NUTSHELL .COM ( www.livinginanutshell.com ) – “Designing Out of the Box… when you LIVE in one!” And her place was the PERFECT backdrop for what she can do. Ant and I are considering her expertise for our home space (still in progress). Also in attendance, Janet's friend Michael who too works with Ant at "The Wendy Williams Show" (and with whom I have worked on projects with Janet at the helm). It marked our first double date as Michael brought his partner Yogeesh. They’ve been together 5 years (Ant and I are closing in on 3). I used to think we were the Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis of the ‘gays’, but look at them. Two other mutual friends between Janet and me - Joe from Chicago . Great to see Joe who works in production out of Chicago. And Audra Boltion, director of communications for Miss Sandra Lee (www.semihomemade.com ) – Food Network host with the most. Audra (who too was instrumental in introducing me to some book publishing execs from her previous position as a publicist at Simon & Schuster/Atria Books) introduced me to Miss Lee, who accompanied her to this party. Sandra said she loved my cheekbones and smile. Wanted to know who I was (She said “Is he on TV or a model or something?” During a morale-depleted time for me (believe it or not), compliments like that can bring on a smile. SMILE! This, though I'm working through the doldrums one day at a time.). Audra and Sandra even invited us to her photo shoot the next day - scheduled for Neo Studios. Though just there as a friend to the publicist, I get there and Miss Sandra Lee asks me to be a "model" in the shoot. It was for "OUT MAGAZINE" (www.out.com/) and its theme was Sandra Lee and a number of the gay men in her life (from her hairdresser to her makeup artist to her props guy to her culinary director to her brother to --- suddenly --- me, her new BFF she'd just met the night before at a cocktail party). Perhaps she needed some diversity with her model entourage. I was fine to oblige as I got to handle (as my prop) $1,000,000 worth of jewels from Van Cleef & Arpels. STAY TUNED for more on the feature and the article. Only in "... the life of Riley...". (I walked into that shoot Tracey Chambers and walked out "Mahogany"! You get that analogy?).

Making media impressions that have reach and range support so much of what my branding as independent personality/producer/writer (and now-'model') are about. Every six months or so, I meet up with my favorite editor Paul at my favorite post-house Murray Hill to take stock of my last six months of work ( www.murrayhillstudios.com/ ). From "Million Dollar Password" to NBC Nightly News on-line to my REMY MARTIN/Dave LaChappelle project to AT&T's "Hugh Thompson Show" in which I did Geek 2.0 makeovers on one man and one woman, we have excerpted this work accordingly. Stay tuned. Those links will be available to view sometime soon. Paul is working on them.

Meanwhile, as I continue to work my load of freelance regulars, I may need to rebook some time to update the reel even further as many calls are coming in for my ‘pop culture’ analysis.  At UNITY ’08, execs from CNN's "Showbiz Tonight" ( www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/showbiz.tonight/ ) and CN8’s “Your Morning!” ( www.cn8.tv/channel/channelhome.asp?lChannelID=649 ) expressed interest in using me and already the phone is ringing. Just this morning, I got two calls from CN8s 'Your Morning!' (regional cable network morning show out of Philly, but reaching audience of 9 million from Virginia to Maine). Monday morning, I'll participate in a roundtable on Ben Stiller's 'Tropic Thunder' (Are we oversensitive a la blackface/retard references?) via satellite from CNN's New York City studios.
I'll send those links to you when available. It's good to be in a bit of a demand. This, as I too was invited to sit in at BET for a taping of “THE TRUTH with Jeff Johnson” ( www.bet.com/ ) which premieres tonight. CNN's Lola Ogunnaike and I waxed topical and pop cultural on the same panel. They say they will call on me to join the weekly roundtable from time to time. Awesome!

From the passings of my fellow "Moshood-nisto" Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac, I got a call from www.blackamericaweb.com which quoted me with partial accuracy ("[Bernie Mac] was like your everyday Chicago brother who really took the opportunity to do his art in front of the masses,”). The second part of what I said to the interviewer: "“He was paid to be himself and to take those experiences from the 'hood in Chicago , along with life lessons, and turn those into a really beautiful body of work,” is attributed to Billy Wilson, founder and president of the Motown Alumni Association". But those are my words (http://www.blackamericaweb.com/site.aspx/bawnews/berniemacrecalled811).

I too got a call from the New York Post's David K. Lee regarding Beyonce’s L’Oreal Ad ( http://www.nypost.com/seven/08072008/news/nationalnews/beyonce_the_pale_123393.htm ). Though fellow NABJ-er and fellow NABJ A&E Task Force member ERIC Deggans quote made the cut of the actual article, this is what I had to say:

"... I think the brouhaha over Beyonce's so-called lighter image in these pix is much ado about nothing!

I think the gossip bloggers have been chomping at the bit to get a new impression of Beyonce that they could hate on. (Not sure who critiqued this first...).

It's clear that creative types in advertising and entertainment take the time to overtly photo-shop and color-correct images sometimes. And that's across the board. Shucks! I make sure my photo editor/my partner Ant takes the time on my blog photos to ensure that I am as shine-free as possible or that my skin tone is evened out on the photo. And left to my own devices, I might come out a hair lighter than intended. There are many color complexes in the African American community and they didn't escape me (though I'm mindful of how silly they can be sometimes).

With that, Beyonce is too identifiable as a "light-skinned", African American woman for us to be crying over this perhaps less-tanned image of her. Sometimes we see her more bronzed after she's spent time in the South of France or when she's given herself a cosmetic tan. Nobody is saying "Is she trying to look like Kelly Rowland (her darker hued, group member from DC3)?" Othertimes, she's more pale (like in this pic) to the naked eye. And oftentimes, the graphic artist may have gone too far.

Do I think it was a direct act on the advertiser's part to show her as "white" - in hopes that she'd just blend into the sea of pages featuring white models? No! Because - again - Beyonce, like Diana Ross before her, Janet Jackson, and Whitney Houston (pre-crack) and a host of other 'brown divas' since the beginning of pop culture, transcends race inside of her pop/crossover/mainstream success... if only iconographically.

Surely, there's another conversation to be had on race and equity (with who gets these contracts) between a Black diva vs. a White diva, etc (and what that diva looks like... going into the offer or negotiation). But that's not this conversation.”

QUICK SHOUT OUTS TO:

· Kim Bardakian with Pandora ( www.pandora.com ). You guys checked out that site yet? It’s lots of fun! And as my cap demonstrates, they have a lot of fun SWAG!

· CHECK THIS OUT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AM599RHWtQ

My Morehouse brother David Redic, who I haven’t seen in years, reached out to me as he got the call to write and record an Obama theme song. It’s a grassroots labor of love that I want to share with you here. If you can think of any tie-ins, let me know. I met David when he was a freshman at Morehouse and I was a senior. I booked he and three others to be in the freshman week talent show as a group we called “Just Us” (I also cast Rockmond Dunbar in that same talent show to do a monologue).

· My fellow New York Association of Black Journalists member Martha Buckner (who too works at Black Enterprise). I want to say hi to her Louie and Prada, twin cats, who are 2 1/2 years old from the Humane society. She adopted them and I met them during a shoot I produced at her home. She adopted them after Muffin and Leiber died. Leiber died for weeks after Muffin. Louie, Prada and Leiber are named after handbags. Handbags are her favorite accessory. Hey Martha, Louie, and Prada!!!

  • Shout out to Leonard Pitts, Jr. - NABJs JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR. He’s a syndicated newspaper columnist, Pulitzer prize winner, author ( www.miamiherald.com/living/columnists/leonard_pitts/ ). But I have such a childhood memory of him as the author of one of the first Diana Ross biographies I ever read. See ROSS here with another pop cultural favorite Kathy Griffin ( www.kathygriffin.net/ ) Moreover, his pop cultural analysis on icons like Whitney Houston. When he asked if she was “black enough”, it was in a context that many in the industry didn’t get. Clearly, she could “sang!!!!!”, but he was speaking to how so much of who she was naturally was being repressed to ensure her pop domination. Perhaps that was the worst thing that could have happened for her livelihood.
  • And one of our NABJ Babies Olivia Sanders? Great to spend a little time with you while here in New York City. Good luck to you as you soon graduate college and start your career. Good to break bread at my favorite spot (and have you enjoy it for the first time): HOUSTON'S (www.hillstone.com/).
  • LEDISI who was recently on JAY LENO performing with SERGIO MENDES ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUGU9PuAI48 ). More on SERGIO here ( www.sergiomendesmusic.com/ ). And LEDISI ( www.ledisi.com ).
  • Two girlfriends I must shout out: PAT BATES (see us in Maui. What a dream. We must get back there soonest.). And my Itika (Ti-Ti, I call her) with her lastest impression on www.nbc5.com/nudehippo/ . Here she is outta this world: http://www.motionbox.com/videos/d49fdfb1191ce55c?iid=share&sid=mbox_shareemail&type=sd
  • Just as her client load lightens a bit with USHER off of her roster, publicist for Janet Jackson, JD, and Patti LaBelle needs a ‘publicist’ of her own. Patti Webster’s new book, “IT HAPPENED IN CHURCH: Stories of Humor from the Pulpit to the Pews” will be released on September 3, 2008 on Souls of My Sisters/Kensington Books with the prayer that those who don't know Jesus Christ will open up these pages, smile, laugh and ultimately, see Him. Borders, Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com are just some of the places you will be able to purchase the book. CONGRATS PATTI! We’re lifting you and this project up to achieve your goal. (But don't get too busy to manage our eternal queries on Miss Janet Jackson. There is a tour coming up... and we MUST be there... in New York City, Tokyo, and beyond!!!!! SMILE!).
  • AMEN!

"LIKE I NEVER LEFT..."

Call me a Wendy groupie, but my man Ant works for “The Wendy Williams Show” (www.wendywilliamstvshow.com/). I have a little time on my hands this summer. So, when he invited me to do an encore audience-seating at the “How-You-Doin’?”-fest, I obliged. The week prior, I attended the Al Roker show with Ern and Tata (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/22/in-a-world-of-fading-treasures-love-is-the-greatest-pleasure.html). This time, I came solo, but not for long. I met a host of great folks – including a handful of fun ladies from Connecticut and this Brazilian hottie Torez. He had the opportunity to dance with RuPaul during VH-1’s “DIVAS 2000: A Tribute to Diana Ross”. Of course, at that juncture, I found that exciting and hoped to share the YOU TUBE clip here. (But I did find the finale in which Ru joins Ross and others: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koL3sZzGT1A). With that, we clowned around backstage before show time and got ourselves revved up for the day’s extravaganza. Of course, everyone was abuzz about Omarosa’s antics the day prior (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUab1L8LdL4) and (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wndi5YKMVRM). Wendy – however – came out the victor/Victoria inside that organic TV feud, holding her own but maintaining a sense of grace since Omarosa was a “guest” (albeit a hostile one) on her show. I consider this a low moment for Omarosa (but that seems to be her trajectory, though I must say she was kind to me when I requested a photo-op of her in front of Radio City Music Hall at the “DIVAS WITH HEART” show - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/11/divas-with-heart.html). On this ‘new day’, we were focusing on positive things. There was lots of dancing going on – including Torez who was thrust into the “Soul Train” line to drop it like it’s hot (and it was). But even hotter? My Ant who was busy prepping the guest announcer and collaborating with his fellow teammates on all things pre-production. Then, after all the hooping and hollering, Wendy came out to a less-controversial show (but no less entertaining). Vivica A. Fox shared openly, sassily, and pleasantly with Wendy – keeping us all satisfied. Afterwards, she changed out of her hot, red number into - simply - a sweat suit and she signed autographs with all of her fans. She even let me get a quick picture before she was carried away (for lunch with my friend Phillip Bloch who is her co-star on VH1’s “Glam God” - www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/glam_god/series.jhtml - the current project she was promoting on ‘Wendy’). Though I’m still chasing my photo-op (without Miss Wendy being pulled away), I did get the chance to introduce myself as Ant’s man. She received me warmly and assured me they all love working with him at the show. (I’d find out later that Wendy mentioned Ant on her radio show – pointing out that Ant, 2Pac (late rapper)... and Charlelmagne have the most beautiful, natural eyebrows she's ever seen!!!). I concur... HEY!!!! One more thing: Just as Wendy and some of her words and phrases have become household, I'm enjoying the new possibilities coming out of her mouth - like "SIT DOWN!" - something she declares from her stage-center perch when she feels her co-host (READ: audience member) has completed their moment (or perhaps when they've not finished their moment, but she's finished listening...). The context and rhythm in which she uses the oft-heard words (usually that come out of a Black mother's lips) is HILARIOUS! I laugh everytime! It's rude, crude, endearing, and about to be one of her latest, kitschy contributions to the pop culture tapestry that she is weaving herself from that creative mind of hers that won't... ahem... SIT DOWN!

From there, I had to get home and prepped for a bright and early flight to Chicago for Unity ’08 (www.2008unity.org/) – a gathering of about 8,000 journalists from the National Association of Black Journalists (www.nabj.org); National Association of Hispanic Journalists; Asian American Journalists Association; and the Native American Journalists Association – the largest ever as professional journalism organizations go. It was quite the overwhelming affair, but always enjoyable to see my fellow journalists of color. We’re very much like family – so this is the ‘family reunion’. The old peeps – like my fellow co-workers in Chicago – were in the house. But also, my new “Amazing Grace” Mara Schiavocampo proved to be an appropriate running-mate for all things networking and partying – even folding me into yet another of her pieces that required my pop culture analysis. Click here to see more: http://dailynightly.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/07/25/1222169.aspx . Afterwards, we went and spent some time at the Sheraton hotel’s Chi-Bar ( www.Sheraton.com/Chicago ). Mara sold my mentoring spirit for a place on the chockfull line-up. After the ‘karaoke maestro’ convinced me to advise his friend Derik (who is finding his way in the industry), he placed me on the program. Mara selected Maxwell’s “This Woman’s Work” for me to perform as she knows it to be a staple when we karaoke in New York (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxu-i8on15Q). My good girlfriend Allison from NPR joined me for morale support, though there was so much love coming from the folks who were in the house that night. What can I say? Karaoke rules and rocks!!!! Oh! And my NABJ buddy and fellow independent producer Caleb led a searing, heartfelt (if a hair off-key) rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing”. Lots of fun to watch. But it wasn’t all play. My Morehouse brother Michael K. Watts and I had lots of work to do as co-producers of the NABJ Hall of Fame Banquet (www.nabj.org), which ultimately went off without a hitch. Well, there were a few hitches… but in the end, we got everyone in and out with 6 minutes to spare. It’s a new day, huh NABJ? It was a total honor to produce this event which featured presentations from a trio of our mentors (Condace Pressley; Sidmel Estes-Sumpter, and current NABJ President Barbara Ciara) who – along with two others (Vanessa Williams and Dorothy Butler Gilliam) – are credited as the ‘women’ who made it to the top of this association’s ranks. In addition to so many things, Barbara – by the way – has an awesome column in monthly entertainment magazine Mix Mag (www.mixmagweb.com). Check it out! It too was good to see one of the NABJ Babies who led the ranks of us ‘new kids on the block’ Roland Martin (www.rolandsmartin.com/) receive the President’s Award. In 1990 and 1991, Roland – along with my Spelman sister Jocelyn Coleman (now a Hollywood publicist at her own firm Favor PR) – and I (and many others – like my Candi Carter) were the student journalists placed in front of the camera and behind the scenes to present and produce daily newscasts at the convention. We’ve come a long way, baby!!!! With room to breathe, I got the chance to see (and pose with) new and old friends. There was my Dawn Kelly from Prudential and Miss Gail from North Carolina. April Woodard, who graciously was a part of my NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force panel in Vegas last year, was here at UNITY. She looks amazing as always. And it’s always great to spend time with one of my nearest and dearest friends (who I met at NABJ in Detroit – 1992) Miss Lisa Goodnight! And I hung out with my New York City peeps Miss Shelley Wade – Z100’s midday diva – and Michele Leone (of NBC Today Show producer-fame). And Mike and Angela and Rudy, oh my! Just so good to see and hang out with everybody!

During a sea of media receptions, I got the chance to make good on my word and mentor the young man Derik. I made sure he met some key folks who could support him in navigating his game to the next level. We ran into actor Nate Parker (of “Great Debaters” fame), who was there to promote his upcoming flick “The Secret Life of Bees” (More on that in a moment…). A quick costume change allowed me to saunter over to the New York Association of Black Journalists (www.nyabj.org) suite to reconnect with Caleb and Mara. Mara's "Big Willie” David Puente (www.blogs.abcnews.com/exclusiva/) joined us. I ran into Charlotte Doreen Small about whom I’ve blogged before (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/12/16/cat-on-a-hot-tin-roof.html). She was in the mix at the NYABJ suite. And my former fellow Board member Bonnie’s daughter Erin (now my nephew Herman’s Spelman sister) joined her mother for the weekend.

As Chair of the NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force, I helped co-present two films for the NABJ Film Festival and hosted a sneak-peek of 'Secret Life of Bees' (www.foxsearchlight.com). After the 10-minute featurette, I interviewed ‘Bees’ director Gina Prince-Blythewood (also of “Love & Basketball” and HBO’s “Disappearing Acts” fame) and Nate Parker (“Great Debaters”). They shared candidly and openly about their project which I think is going to be a big hit. In the wake of the girl power that "Sex & The City" and "Mamma Mia" have exhibited at the box office of late, hopefully that trend coupled with the Oscar-cache of the cast will translate into Hollywood gold (and Black). ROLL CALL: In addition to the critically-acclaimed Nate Parker, 'Bees' stars Oscar nominees Queen Latifah and Sophio Okonedo; Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson; Grammy darling Alicia Keys; and childstar wonder Dakota Fanning. Having met Gina Prince-Blythewood (and reconnecting to Nate), I'm wishing this project well. Next up: Spike Lee Joint 'Miracle at St. Anna' (www.miracleatstanna.movies.go.com/) screened (a snippet). Then, I interviewed 'Miracle' author/screenwriter James McBride who shared how he came to write this compelling story and subsequently how he came to write this screenplay for Spike over a year and a half without even addressing money. He trusted that eventually they would deal with the business. Most important - for James - was (and is) getting his story seen and appreciated by the masses. I appreciated his candor (and his cool). He's an award-winning jazz musician and composer as well. This event was a part of NABJ’s “On The Move” Campaign (www.nabj.org). In the tradition of solid, entertaining programs, we delivered yet again. My buddy and sometimes collaborator Keith Walker (www.mediaprocess.com) – along with his gorgeous wife Button – came to support. Afterwards, NABJ’s “Salute to Excellence” Awards took place. I’m so proud of my friends Angela Robinson and Greg Coy, who reigned supreme in this esteemed contest. Cheryl Burton (among many) too took home an award (for some of her international work) on this culminating night. After the pomp and circumstance, I was interviewed by my friend and A&E Task Force co-chair Greg Dunmore for a documentary project he’s supporting. The theme: ‘Blacks in Journalism Today’ (in the wake of so many buyouts, downsizings, layoffs, etc.). I must admit I was taken aback when invited to participate in this junket of Black journalism minds. This, after all, wasn't 'pop culture' exactly. My interview followed "Hall of Fame" inductee Les Payne; current NABJ President Barbara Ciara; and 1st woman NABJ President Sidmel Estes-Sumpter; and a host of other seasoned media professionals who I consider icons in the industry. I wasn't sure I was equipped, but Greg assured me they wanted my perspective (telling me later that they isolated a host of great soundbites from me when they played back). And I realize that I shouldn't sell my intellect short, even though my beat is one more pointedly aligned to levity and lighter fare. So in a nutshell, from politics to pop culture, once I get grounded, I can go on and on and on. (Translation: They couldn't shut me up. SMILE!). Stay tuned for more on this project.  From shoptalk to the dance floor, my Lisa Goodnight and I split our time between the Hispanic Journalists party and the Black Journalists party (quite reflective of how we have navigated our close friendship over the years). I ran into my good friends DeDe McGuire, Sheila Eldridge, and Tosha Whitten-Griggs, who is my Spelman sister. She - along with my Morehouse brother Darian Trotter - and I got to reflect on the good days and catch up on what's going on now in our lives.   Kevin Frazier of “Entertainment Tonight” fame (host of the awards program) promised to contribute to our program in anyway we want to use him next year (in Tampa).

A full night of hospitality suite-hopping, a visit from Obama, and the convention was a wrap. I didn’t get a photo op with him this time, but there’s always last year (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/8/13/audacity-of-hope-and-dreams-in-vegas.html).

Meanwhile, I’m back at home. The fellas were all in one piece – my nephew making sure I know about Whitney Houston’s leaked song with Akon. Not Whitney at her best, but – with some help from pro-tools technology – it sounds like much of what we hear on the radio today. She may still be able to compete. Of course, as her song requests, she wants us to love her ‘like she never left’. Well, I’m game. Let’s hear some more. Miracles happen everyday.

Today, I’m following up with many contacts from the convention. Though there’s a tangible fear around work in the business (as evidenced by much of the sharing at the convention), I’m feeling encouraged – as an independent – that there will continue to be lucrative opportunities to which I can tap… as personality/producer/writer in the pop culture/entertainment realm. Lots of things are already in progress and several checks are forthcoming for work already done. Plus, I can breathe (just a little bit in anticipation of that forthcoming slush fund from “Million Dollar Password” - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/9/aint-no-mountain-high-enough.html).

I also found out that in the wake of CNN’s “Black In America” two-parter airing last week (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/22/in-a-world-of-fading-treasures-love-is-the-greatest-pleasure.html), my sister’s husband Vincent is getting his shine via an I-REPORT (http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-49574?ref=feeds%2Foncnn). Seen here with Savannah-hometown-Big-Boi-turned-even-bigger, Vincent's salient, concise, and passionate commentary spoke to the producers so much that it’s been used on CNN as well, but they left off the most impressive of his video-taped words: "... and one more thing! As a Black Man, nobody asked me a damn thing! Peace! "  WAY TO GO, BRUH-LAW!!!!

And in closing, you’ll recall I mentioned being a page in middle school at the Georgia Capital alongside my many friends and how Lori made us listen to Luther’s “Supserstar” again and again and again and again… (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/22/in-a-world-of-fading-treasures-love-is-the-greatest-pleasure.html). Well, one of those best friends, Bernie, sent me a note, reminding me that we did get the chance to play Kool & The Gang’s “Joanna” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snzafal2nAw) – only my brainchild was that we replace the title name with “Atlanta”. This, as we eased restlessly yet excitedly down the road to our ‘Emerald City’!!! Thanks Bernie for the reminder. Warms this heart! For real…

"IN A WORLD OF FADING TREASURES, LOVE IS THE GREATEST PLEASURE..."

I know I talked about this already, but it was 25 years ago that Miss Ross performed her historic Central Park concert in the rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WkPElq_Ejs) and introduced a song that still holds as a favorite “Let’s Go Up” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWCNEIwCgg4). Then, a couple of weeks later, she performed it on ‘The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2WOMj_CXqY). Its lyrics (along with so many others that come out of the mouth of Ross) become my mantra sometimes when I need a quicker-picker-upper. They’ve been a thread for my last few week and change. As optimistic as I am about what’s going on in my life (or about to go on in my life), the days are still challenging right now. THANK GOD FOR POP CULTURE… and DIANA ROSS! And great, inspiring lyrics like: “… in a world of fading treasure, LOVE is the greatest pleasure…” INDEED!

Comin' back on
Comin' back strong
Turnin' back on

No amount of depression or temporary financial setbacks can keep my fellas and me from enjoying ourselves. So my nephew Noot asked for dining recommendations different than the spots he’s taken to since being here this summer (Amy Ruth and BBQ). I recommended one of Ant’s and my favorites when the money is plentiful Serafina (www.serafinarestaurant.com/). In fact, Noot took me to the spot, so I could introduce him accordingly to the experience. We enjoyed our Italian cuisine while Noot spent much of his time looking to spot Diddy or someone close to him as Serafina is right next to Bad Boy Worldwide (www.badboyonline.com/) And he remembered my telling him of an evening out at Serafina - dining alfresco - when I actually did happen upon Diddy and he graced us with his fragrance and networking swagger. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/10/24/making-a-wave-or-is-it-way-when-you-can.html) Well, Noot did get a glimpse of Diddy’s son Justin. But that wasn’t photographed. We did get a shot of Noot with Diddy in the background via Times Square. Afterwards, Ant joined us at World Stages (www.newworldstages.com) for the opening night of “East 14th: True Tales of a Reluctant Player” (www.east14th.com) starring and written by Don Reed. A bit of a “Who’s Who” was in the house – giving Noot some photo-ops for his Facebook. Robert Townsend (who booked Don Reed for his first comedy special on HBO – “Partners in Crime”) was in the house and alerted us he is working on a documentary about African American comedians and a film project with Ving Rhames. He too shared with Ant that his time at the helm of the now-defunct “Black Family Channel” (down in Atlanta) and how it was hard to keep ad dollars profitable in the competitive waters of TV One and BET.  Also (and again), Miss Lynn Whitfield was in the house (four times in four weeks… until we see her next week. Stay tuned). She attended with her beautiful daughter. Lynn is beginning to love taking pix with Ant and me. “Cheetah Girl” and “Catwalk” author Deborah Gregory (www.cheetahrama.com/) was there – giving Noot his special time that he wasn’t able to get at her launch party which Deborah says was quite a packed house (but all of those people were there to celebrate her success). She was sporting some great couture – from her bag by Isabella Fiore (www.isabellafiore.com/); shoes by Prada (www.prada.com/); and giving her listening audience a lesson in all things corsetry and cinched. Other friends in the house: Deb McIntyre, actor Greg Vincent, book publishing editor and my Morehouse brother Christian and his friend Krishan – also in book publishing, and others.

Takin' the heat out in the street
Baby too long

I always share with you how Ant and I try to attend PLUM every 2nd Saturday of the month. It’s been a few months since we’ve been able to attend. But last Saturday, we got to hang out with great friends and enjoy a lovely summer breeze at Plum Bar (www.plumpomidor.com/). All our fab, usual suspects were there – from Derrick to Melvin to Hal. I met Alberto, the promoter of another party that is always the 3rd Sunday of the month. We weren’t able to make it, but I want to shout out Alberto and alert you of his “Escandalo Nights WHITE Party” (www.escandalonights.com) at El Morocco (www.elmorocconyc.com). There’s always summer fun for the boys of summer. And a shout out to Luna, a photographer/artist/teacher I met a couple of years ago when he was being honored at the Hetrick-Martin Institute for his work with kids and HIV-awareness (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2006/12/5/birth-death-and-the-life-in-between-live.html). I got the chance to speak with many of his kids at the Harvey Milk High School for NYC’s LGBTQ youth (www.hmi.org/). It was good to hang out with him again – socially.

Can you tell me how much fire
Will it take to get us higher

Well, speaking of HEAT and FIRE:  I try to keep his business his business (Well, maybe I don’t always succeed at it. SMILE!)… but I do exercise restraint in Ant’s current gig du jour as there are confidentialities we high-profile TV folks often have to exercise per contracts we sign and in the best interest of our employers, etc. But now that my naked eyes have witnessed some fare in which I can comment via the prism of “… the life of Riley…”, I’m ‘bout to run my mouth. Ant works on one of the creative teams for “The Wendy Williams Show” (http://www.wendywilliamstvshow.com/) – the Fox/Debmar-Mercury-produced TV talk show that is running for six-weeks this summer (as a sneak-peek) in four major markets: NYC, LA, Detroit, and Dallas. Just one week into its 'sneak-peek' run... and it is - for sure - a BIG HIT in those markets. After its six weeks, the hope is it will get picked up and go nationally. We wish Wendy (and Ant) well. He invited Tata, Ern, and me to attend the show last week. Al Roker was a hoot of celebrity guest that day – promoting the game show he’s hosting “Celebrity Family Feud” (www.nbc.com/Celebrity_Family_Feud/) – the competition for the #1 game show this summer “Million Dollar Password” (www.cbs.com/primetime/million_dollar_password/) on which I was a winner. Here’s the story from last week’s blog (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/9/aint-no-mountain-high-enough.html). I produced several projects for Al Roker over the years. So, it’s always great to see him. Moreover, I have to say --- and this is not just because my man works for her and his wages are helping us hold our fort down this summer and beyond --- Wendy is in the zone of something really special. We had so much fun at the show. She is such the funny, zany, and – get this! – vulnerable talent that the airwaves are hungry to see right now. I found her to be connected and what I want to tune into every morning. Of course, she will have to get adjusted confidently to the dimension of TV and celebrity interviewing (active listening) that anyone whose making a segue from radio to TV would have to adjust to, but she’s taking no prisoners and narrating the degree to which she is a quick study! I love the show and I love her! I should add that the small team that’s working on the show is comprised of some folks I knew in other professional domains… and some new folks who are truly looking out for Ant… and I want to give them all a shout out and a CONGRATS as well. Now, for you Wendy, “How you doin?” (and I can’t wait for my photo op with you. The last time during AllHipHop.com week last year, Big Kev pulled you away. But I still got my shot. SMILE!). Perhaps now with Ant in the mix, I can get my shot. ALRIIIIIIIIIGHHHTTTTTTT! Luv u Wendy!

Hearin' the news, singin' the blues
You gotta choose

My crew and I from elementary, middle, and high school have been CHOOSING POWERFULLY for a long time. Too, we've all been HIGHLY FAVORED. Sometimes in the throes of life’s intense challenges, we forget what the beginning of the race looked like. But then, there are pictures that take us back or bring us forward into the possibilities inside of which we currently live. Take a look at these images. They are from my junior-high/high-school friend Lori Jones (Lewis) about whom I wrote from the 20-year reunion.

Well, when Lori, Ern, Rachel (the high school sweetheart), Bernie, Tish, Cres, Lanette, and I were at DeRenne Middle School, we were invited (by Rachel’s late-great father Roy Allen, a politician in the Ga. House of Representatives –at the time) to be pages at The Capital in Atlanta.

We all hopped in a van and made our way up I-16 to I-75 (Lori playing Luther Vandross' "Superstar" on a mind-numbing loop - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lULU_-L-v3U I didn't mind, but it sure traumatized Ern and Rachel. SMILE! )... and finally to Downtown Atlanta to represent Savannah and our classmates. It was a big deal as there wasn’t a lot of diversity in this program at that time. So, to have a handful of young African Americans representing as we did got a lot of local press and buzz within the hallowed walls of The Gold Dome.

26-years-later, see this pic and see that four of us (of this bunch) in attendance at the 20-year-reunion from high school are still looking the part.

Then, rewind one more time and see an article that shows some of my elementary classmates in a Savannah Morning News picture that celebrates a research project on Wikersham Iron/Savannah Squares/History that Shawna, Joey, George, Tonja, and I went to Atlanta and Washington DC (at the Smithsonian) to present. We reigned victorious. And fast forward 28-years-later and see Shawna, a number of our other classmates (with whom we also wrote a book "A Child's View of Savannah Squares"), at our 20-year-reunion from high school (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/6/17/someday-well-be-together-we-still-together-kinda.html).

Stand up and fight, do it tonight
What can you lose

Well, I’ve mentioned that CNN’s Soledad O’Brien has agreed to be interviewed for a documentary project on which I’m working in a finite role as associate producer/field interviewer. It’s “Big Sister, Little Sister” with independent filmmaker Sue May (www.bslsthedoc.com - in progress; www.myspace.com/bslsthedoc) – a chronicle of three New York City girls and their experience with prom, high school graduation, and the first semester of college. Interspersed, there will be commentary from women of color – like Soledad – on their reflections of that time in their life. But Soledad has more than enough on her plate and I got a sneak-peek of it. She’s at the helm of a landmark documentary series that CNN is producing “Black In America” (www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2008/black.in.america/). The other night at the Time Warner Building, celebs and newsmakers the like came out to experience excerpts from the next two installments. “Black Men” and “Black Women” (which rollout this week). What we saw was spectacular but promises to do more than just focus on problems. This work – as Soledad put it – ‘tells stories’ that need to be heard. Moreover, with its impression being on CNN, it introduces a story that perhaps some didn’t know but it offers a ‘new conversation’ (right in line with all things Obama) for the world to consider as it relates to the diversity of ‘Black folks’. I even found myself having to check myself as I - outside looking in - watched minister, scholar, and author Michael Eric Dyson featured in a piece in which he spoke candidly about -- and with -- his brother who is incarcerated. There was a question posed: “How do two brothers from the same womb lead such different lives?”. There were no concrete answers but considerations that I’ve never seen articulated – from skin color to differences in discipline to personality differences (I can’t wait to see the complete segment). I was watching the piece (again, outside looking in) and began to get emotional. Ant – at a point – extended his hand over to mine because he sensed my body shift and a saw a tear fall. I realized more than something I’m watching about somebody else, that ‘this is my story’ too. I too have a brother with similar struggles and though we LOVE each other, there continues to be a battle of wills around my thoughts on his life (and – believe it or not – his thoughts and judgements on my life’s choices). In his mind (and despite his own challenges), my “gayness” – to him – is an “express” to hell despite the good I aim to be in this world (and my reality that 'being gay' is not an error. It just is). So, he and I are clearly a work in progress. So, I trust many will be able to pull their own relatability to this compelling documentary series on CNN. (By the way, shout out to Don Lemon whose documentary special “Daughters of Legacy” lifted me up. He interviewed daughters of African American male icons: Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Sidney Poitier,  Johnnie Cochran. The guest list was something out of “Who’s Who in Black America”. My buddy from the National Association of Black Journalists (www.nabj.org) – also CNN’s own – Lola Ogunnaike, entertainment correspondent for CNN’s “American Morning” – was there. Harlem community radio diva Jean Parnell and Newsday’s Les Payne were in the house. Les is being inducted into the NABJ Hall of Fame this Thursday in a luncheon Michael K. Watts and I are co-producing at the Unity convention in Chicago (www.2008unity.org). He’s a pillar in the industry – including being a founder of NABJ. The first aunt of the “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” Janet Hubert-Whitten was in the house (with DoubleXXposure’s Angelo Ellerbee and Byron Barnham – maker of Iman’s cosmetics formula). She was so pleasant and sweet. She was happy to see Cicely Tyson, our buddy from the “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” party (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/6/23/back-to-life-back-to-realityback-to-the-here-and-now.html). I asked her where the picture she took of Noot, Ant, and me was (She said then she’d send it). She said “It may take a little bit but I am of my word. If I told you I’d send it, I will send it.” She was so funny and wonderful. For a long time, I’ve been a fan of Warrington Hudlin (and his brother Reginald who heads up BET now). And I have met him at several functions over the years. But imagine my wonder as he shared with me that he saw me on ‘Password’ and – his words – “Your next level is your own show. So, you’ve got to figure out how to make that happen,” he offered. “Many people love you and what you’re doing. Maybe it’s the internet. Maybe you do the pilot and get someone to distribute it. But that’s your next level” I take it a step further and ask if he’d come on the show and give me permission to show clips from his films “Boomerang” and the “House Party” series, etc. He said “Yes!” So, now, I must figure this out, huh? One of my “pop culture icons” has spoken. Ant? Help!!! My good friend (and platonic boo, I’ve called him) Carl Nelson was responsible for this invitation. Many of our mutual friends, including owner of Harlemmade Murphy, were in the house. Murphy (and Ant) made the final cut of the video project I was commissioned to field produce for Remy Martin (www.remy.com/) in celebration of its limited edition bottle as designed by celebrity photographer/artist David LaChapelle. A New York City-based party – celebrating this item and presenting this video – is set for mid-August. Noot wasn’t able to make this set, but would have LOVED to see Tamara Tunie, who is known in our Savannah world as “Jessica” from CBS soap “As The World Turns”. Over time, we’ve collaborated on a couple of media projects and have gotten to know each other socially. Her husband Greg is always the kindest as well. Too, Don Reed was in the house (of “East 14th” fame - www.east14th.com). And of course, Lynn Whitfield… SMILE!

In a world of fading treasure
Love is the greatest pleasure

Ant invited me to join him at the Wendy Williams birthday party on Thursday. I was excited to meet Wendy. In the end (and by the time I arrived), Wendy had left the venue and the planners/venue managers couldn’t quite manage the guests in a way that enrolled us to stay. So, Ant, Ern (who accompanied me), and I decided to head to BBQ or karaoke or somewhere else that could bring us a smile (“Velvet rope” drama at a place to which you are invited is so OVER!!!!). As we were walking, we ran into one of my best friends from high school Maurice Marable, film writer/director who I’ve referenced here before (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/4/-weve-come-a-long-way-baby.html) and (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/2/2/beautiful-struggle.html). He was just leaving “The Lion King” on Broadway with some friends – including Karen R. Good, fan of “A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities”. She too is the author of the Erykah Badu ESSENCE feature (from April) in which Ant is featured as a model. As we all caught up in the middle of Times Square (Maurice and Ern also lived next door to each other in Savannah), we knew the reason the main event was a bust. So, we could enjoy the “good vibrations” of my old friend and now new friends.

So let's go up, forget about down
'Cause in this town, it's gonna get rough

Ant got the chance to meet another dear "Amazing Grace" of mine who I've not seen in a bit. Adrene and I have been out of touch a little as she has had a baby and is soon to be married. I've been busy with traveling and such - differently than when we would have lots of time on our respective hands and be able to hang out all the time. Well, with her upcoming nuptials, Adrene was inspired to come and get me for our yearly catchup and have me introduce her to my favorite designer Moshood (www.afrikanspirit.com) in Brooklyn. She may want Moshood to design her gown and the wedding party garb. Her destination wedding is set for the Caribbean next year. She too got to see Noot who she hasn't seen since he was 12 or so. She, Ant, and I had brunch at Fort Lee's Red Oak Diner before heading out to Brooklyn. We walked through a festival/fair that was erected a stone's throw from Moshood's boutique and enjoyed all that the Fort Greene area has to offer -- neighborhoody hospitality and warmth. I LOVE BROOKLYN! And ADRENE!

And what goes down, is up to us
So let's go up, baby let's go up

With depression creeping down under my heartbeat and the psychology I can put myself through as I approach the date of my mother’s death (July 20), I aimed to have the weekend be different and to call joy forth. My good girlfriend Marcia Pendelton made a generous offer to my guys and me for two nights of theater. The first was “Expatriate” – a two-woman play with music about race, friendship, sexuality, art & fame (www.cultureproject.org). It is being presented by Culture Project, an institution that has a reputation for bringing new theatrical voices to the forefront.‏ In the marketing folks’ words: “Expatriate is an exploration of black womanhood, friendship, sexuality and freedom, celebrating characters in the spirit of Nina Simone, Josephine Baker and the Hottentot Venus. With only a Jam Man loop machine at their feet, real-life rising stars Lenelle Moïse and Karla Mosley make intricate, haunting and stirring music as they weave the story of singing group Black Venus's rise to fame. Expatriate tells the story of Claudie and Alphine, two sophisticated and sexy African-American performing artists and longtime sister-friends. Disillusioned by grief, homophobia and the black glass ceiling, they flee to Europe to heal and realize their starved American dreams. In Paris, they support themselves by singing and dancing on the street and quickly rise to infamy and fortune. But as Claudie and Alphine soon discover, stardom comes at a high price.” We really enjoyed it before segueing for light Friday night bites at SOHO’s “Bar 89” (www.bar89.com). Ant’s co-worker Deb and a friend of hers joined Ern, Ant, and me for this cool Friday night. And poet Stacyeann Chin was in the house (www.staceyannchin.com/).

When it gets hot, like it or not
You want to run
Though it's so warm here in my arms
You won't get burned

Then, on Saturday night, Ant, Noot, and I did the Spike-Lee-filming of “Passing Strange” which closed on Sunday. Karen joined us on this night as well. Ant and I are sad to see it go, but it brought us such joy for its short run (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/3/15/twas-passing-strange.html). I was so excited to be able to share it with Maurice (and Ant’s “Amazing Grace” Manivone). I knew they would connect to Stew (the lead character) as I did (but for their own reasons. We’re all in search for “the real” in our own respective ways). And this night was no exception for “the see and be seen” – including Jurnee Smolett – a hit sighting for Noot. Also, Anika Noni Rose was in the house and thrilled to see us ‘stalkers’! SMILE! Actor extraordinaire (of HBO OZ fame and featured actor in many August Wilson plays) Tony Chisolm was there – sharing with us that he was working on a one-man show with writer of Malcolm X-stage-bio “Chickens Come Home To Roost”s Laurence Holder on Daddy Grace, Founder and 1st Bishop of Noot’s and my family church The United House of Prayer for All People about which I’ve referenced here before: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/4/7/if-a-robin-can-say-thank-you-you-can-do-it-too.html

http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/2/12/tasty-freeze-of-chicago.html

http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/8/30/time-passes-quickly-here.html

My Morehouse brother Maurice Mcrae was there. He’s a Los-Angeles-based actor who directed me in some great stage musicals during college – even lead roles for me (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/5/22/walking-in-strange-and-new-places.html). Over the years, he’s continued to make great industry impressions. So, it was great to introduce Noot to him. And from Spike Lee’s cinematic repository of regulars Anthony Mackie, whose brother Calvin Mackie is a Morehouse man, was there. Also, Spike's sister Joie Lee. And the editorial shoulders on which Karen Good stands as a freelance writer extraordinaire Audrey Edwards and her guests, including a fabulous writer of 85-years who wrote the first feature story in Essence Magazine (www.essence.com) back in 1970. “A beautiful face without a name…” (I’ll get that name yet. Anybody?). Oh! And I got pix with the whole cast except for the Tony-award-winning Stew (the last time). This time, Ant and I got our shots.

In a world of fading treasures

I wanted to see George Michael tonight! Timing, hook-ups, and budget didn’t allow. My Morehouse brother Michael K. Watts is going – so I know I’ll be able to vicariously live through his review in “LIVE! FROM THE FRONT ROW” review. Meanwhile, there’s always YOU TUBE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0omJ--Usis) and perhaps a way I’ll get to see him somewhere else. Meanwhile, the other “George” from my ’80 pop culture psyche – “BOY GEORGE” – has been denied his VISA to tour in the U-S in the wake of recent courtroom woes in the U-K. So, his North American tour is canceled and Michael and I were poised to see him in August. Well, what you gonna do?

The pleasure of your treasures
Cannot be measured up

Everyone’s abuzz about the Italian VOGUE (www.Vogue.com) – ALL AFRICAN AMERICAN issue. Then, there’s JAY Z on Men’s Italian Vogue. Yet, here in America, Lebron James gets credited as the first African American on the stateside mag, which has just announced the poorest sales of an issue ever. So much for my exclusive pic back in Chicago (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/4/16/as-the-sun-has-its-place-up-in-the-sky.html). I hope it didn't depreciate my non-revenue-generating blog entry from back in April. Just kidding. Keep doin' it, Lebron!

And I must simply say that I love the remix on Miss Destiny (Step)Child Michelle Williams’ “We Break The Dawn” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wqb9jqXLsGM). It’s #1 on Billboard’s dance charts. Congrats Michelle!

Ooh, I can't free a person from their chains

Chaka Khan was on Cathy Hughes TV One show (www.tvoneonline.com/) – reflecting on her life and articulating where her life is now. She says that some of her recent spiritual work has been through her life coach Dr. Labeach. If we’re talking about the same Labeach, I know her. I’ve talked about her here before as she’s my Spelman sister and we attended college and performed on stage together (www.drlabeach.com/). If this is you, Nicole, you go!!!!! Be that difference!!!! (I also learned in this interview that Chaka’s brother Mark Stephens wrote “Da Butt” from Spike Lee’s “School Daze” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwTkwyBa__U).

But I'll tell you this for sure
If nothing is ventured
Then nothing is gained, let's go up!

Though there’s been some negative press about my girl Jennifer Hudson and her new CD cover (and whether it’s been photo-shopped to make her look thinner), she is still showing folks that the proof is in the pudding (box office tickets a la her last film “Sex & The City”) and the pipes (a stellar performance on “Good Morning America” this week). And since I was with her from the beginning, I stay on the bandwagon in support of her success. In fact, in the wake of that ‘magic moment’, NABJ has asked me to host a special fundraiser to support NABJ’s “On The Move" campaign. And like our “Dreamgirls” sneak-peek, this event will include snippets from Jennifer Hudson’s upcoming film Gina Prince Blythewood’s "The Secret Life of Bees", which also stars Nate Parker (of “Great Debaters” fame) and I will interview him along with Blythewood. Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okodedo, and Dakota Fanning also star in this film. Then, we will show a teaser of Spike Lee Joint "Miracle at St. Ana" after which I will interview author of the book New York Times James McBride. For those who will be in Chicago for the convention, check out www.myNABJ.org and please come and support.

"AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH!!!"

patpatpassword1.jpgWell, the word is out! The “Million Dollar Password” (www.cbs.com/primetime/million_dollar_password/) with me on it has FINALLY aired. Here are the stats:

7.45 million tuned in, according to Nielsen (making it a Top 15 entry). pattatajulespassword1.jpg[Thanks to all my friends and family who tuned in. I could feel your prayers, hear your screams, and I’ll act like I didn’t hear the cuss outs!!!! SMILE!] nooternpatantfair1.jpg

million%20dollar%20password.jpgAfter a month’s worth of promos that showed me in varying lights – sometimes stuttering; sometimes exclaiming victorious; and other times singing ever so ‘supreme’-ly <wink, wink>, it was exciting to sit down with my Ant, my nephew Noot, and my dear friends Ern, Tata, Jules, and Kimberly to live through it one more time.jajuanpatpassword1.jpg I was palpitating all the way as if I wasn’t there the first time! nootkimpatpassword1.jpgYou can check out the full episode here: http://www.cbs.com/primetime/million_dollar_password/video/video.php?cid=715207177&pid=_yG0VCBmP6Wu_X4IhThVrTWcrO6OFrLc&play=true&cc=0

What a journey to get to this moment:

PATRICK%20ANT%20AT%20LUKE%20AND%20LEROY.jpgHow I came to be a contestant on the show? My partner Ant is my #1 cheerleader and manager of ensuring that I keep taking my talents and intellectual capital (if you will) to the next level. He understands – up close and personal (for his and my reasons) – that it’s not always easy being freelance and independent. But as you know, both he and I continue to go for our dreams and there are a number of deliverables to show for it. With that, Ant is always on varied sites forwarding on-cam/voice-work stuff my way ---work aligned with my skills set; etc. to compliment the revenue I make from existing clients and to ensure that I’m giving myself the chance to be considered for more high-profile fare i.e. host work, voice work, etc.

Well, thinking outside of the box for me (as he was surfing various job/opportunity sites), he sent one regarding “Million Dollar Password”. I was thinking it was for a host slot... but then, at closer inspection, I saw that Regis was already attached. I asked Ant what were his thoughts in sending this to me. He asked:

"Didn't you say you used to watch these game shows with your family - growing up?”

And “Couldn't $1,000,0000 or anything come in handy right now for you?” “Aren't you the pop culture guy?”

“Why don't you just reply to the ad, let them know why you would be a great contestant, and send it in?".

maurypat.jpgFrom there, I got over my ego and did just that. Soon thereafter, I got a call from the casting folks. I went in to New York City for the audition (Maury Povich studio to be exact. I even ran into Maury going inside). In addition to telling them about myself on-camera, I played PASSWORD with producers and other prospective contestants. And voila!!!! I got the callback, which required more rounds of play and back story until I was playing on some computers (much like those on the show) in front of the executive-and-senior-level producers. They loved me!!!! (NOTE: They are looking to cast folks who give good TV as much as they are casting folks who can play the game). And the rest is history.

bettyregis.jpgOne of the things they asked me in the auditions is “Which celebrity would you want to team up with?” I joked “Diana Ross because she’s just my favorite of all favorites. But knowing that maybe this would not be her kind of game and knowing she’d likely decline, I said Betty White!!!” Betty White – to me – is the greatest game show lady (as she was married to the original “Password” host, the late, great Allen Ludden, who she met as a contestant on the show, which she did 29 times: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X3Fv3INp84). I had an inkling Betty still had it in her… and I wanted her. But I also said Rosie O’Donnell and Kelly Ripa because I felt like these ladies would do well (with me) and accept the offer to participate.

Fast forward a month or so later, it’s early March. I’m put up at a Queens-based hotel on the eve of the show’s taping. We do some pre-taped bits that didn’t make air – reinforcing why I’m a good contestant; who I want my celebrity partner to be; and other talking points like Ant’s most recent birthday gift to me in which he took me to Manila, Philippines to see Beyonce;beyonce%20crop%20out.jpg my love of karaoke; Diana Ross; and my blog (in which execs said they’d love to see my experience chronicled… but after all has taped and aired), etc… but this time, the small talk was being recorded under nice lights and after a little glam squad work done. Ant styled me – head to toe - for the whole weekend (though he couldn’t attend as he and his “Amazing Grace” [best friend] Manivone were going up for another reality show in which they would have teamed to run a restaurant. Think “Top Chef” meets “Amazing Race” meets “The Restaurant”). There was a typo on one of the background cards that had me from “ Alabama , Georgia ”. Of course, “ Alabama ” – like “ Georgia ” – is a state (not a city). “ Alabama ” continued to pop up as my home ‘city’, even though “ Savannah ” is actually where I’m from (though I was born in Tokyo, Japan by way of my dad’s profession in the Air Force).

On the night before, the other prospective contestants and I spend the evening in the lounge (at the bar). Everyone is so nice – from a salad bar owner to a publicist for spas to a filmmaker. Some are practicing with the board game. I play a bit, but decide to turn in early (just want to hear Ant’s voice one more time before I go to sleep. I do that and then conk out).

CS-cosby-cast_430.jpgThe next morning, I get up. I am excited and nervous and anxious for a long day of briefing, tech rehearsals on the state-of-the-art set (in Astoria, Queens where “The Cosby Show” used to tape and where there’s a building named for “Diana Ross” in 1985 (for her contribution to NYC’s film economy), seven years after she shot much of “The Wiz” on this same campus of sets. dianarossbuilding.jpg

There are rumblings that “Betty White” is in the house, which excites me (but also the many others who too said their ‘dreamgirl’ for “Million Dollar Password” play would be her too!). Then, we are being sequestered for many hours as shows are taping (By the way, we are alerted that everyone won’t get to play. So, there is a possibility that I may not actually even go out to play anyone).

Also, as pairs of contestants are being pulled out, deduction has me thinking that I’m going to be competing against a young lady named Keri. Very nice, but in the 24 hours that we have all spent, she’s been deemed “the librarian” with a “password memory of steel”. She’s the one to beat. Not the one I want to play against. She’s practicing when no one else is. She’s fierce!

patkeripassword1.jpgBut then, my luck (I think to myself), Keri and I are called (as a pair) to go through make-up, briefing, and then to the studio. <can you hear the suspenseful game show music?> My heart is beating. We are escorted backstage. Someone places our microphones on us. We see Betty White playing with one of our fast friends from last night/this morning Linda. She walks with $100,000. I’m excited because we are next and Betty is right there (on a monitor). And we are moments away from my dream request coming true. The casting director even looks at me and says “You asked… and here she is…”bettyregis2.jpg Then, the boss of the boss of the boss of the casting director (there’s quite the hierarchy in television, which I know all too well) comes to the back and says “Take their mics off these two [meaning Keri and me] and take them back to holding!” The casting director comes back and – almost teary-eyed – alerts us that this show with Betty is about to wrap (and Betty will be done for the day). She says they are going to stop down production for one hour. Then, they are going to bring us back to tape our “game” with two “new” celebrities. I am devastated internally but at least I am going to get to play.

Here, back in holding (with our other contestants who are now curious as to why we are back), we cannot say anything about what we just saw nor what happened nor why we are back. Interestingly, I begin to sing as a way to break the tension and entertain the troops. Ironically, I am singing lots of Diana Ross.

patregispassword1.jpgOne hour passes and we are led through the same drill, but this time, it is SHOWTIME! We discover our celebrities: Damien Fahey (MTV TRL host or VJ) of whom I was not so familiar and Monique Coleman (“High School Musical 1,2,3”/”Dancing With The Stars”) of whom I was more familiar as she attended the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Las Vegas last year. But I don’t know her at all. Well, it wasn’t gonna be Betty White… but it is who we have. Onward…

The show begins. Damien introduces me to Regis (I’m prepared to talk all about Savannah , Georgia as the prepping producer tells me that will be a focus. I’m just happy Regis won’t be saying I’m from “Alabama, Georgia” but also, I am prepared – in my head – to go on and on about the beauty of Savannah and how I studied the history of Savannah and its squares and architecture as a child – even writing and publishing a book (with my 6th grade class): “A Child’s View of Savannah Squares”. But Regis gets through that talking point quickly and seques into my profession as a “freelance journalist”. I tell him about my blog “A Day In The Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities” and how it chronicles my celebrity sightings and things in pop culture that turn me on. He asks who I’ve written about lately. I say “I ran into you like two months ago at an art opening. Ernie Barnes.”PATRICK%20REGIS.jpg Regis remembers the moment (not the meeting nor our photo op) but I offer that perhaps that event may have been a premonition of my participation on his show. He likes that thought. I’m pleased.

My first round: Damien gives and I guess. I’m nervous. Damien’s not Betty White but we get 3. Regis seems sympathetic to my plight – pointing out how fast time goes by, but how – his words – ‘you’re gonna have a lot to blog about before you’re through here’. Then, Keri’s up. Monique gives the clues. They get 3. Then, I give. Quite the stuttering round (but also the beginning of my receivers passing for me when only the “clue-giver” is to pass. That begins to worry my rhythm with both celebrity guests but – in this moment - two more points. We’ll take it. Then, Keri gives to Monique and they get 3, besting me by 1 point.

Then, we switch celebs. And Monique and I are now partners. We get 4 more – totaling 9 now. Damien now gives to Keri and they get two more – totaling 8. Then, Keri goes again because she’s trailing. They get 3 more – now totaling 11.

And finally, Monique and I go – me giving the clues. I need 3 to win. And within a second (after Monique passed on my behalf a time or two), I get what is necessary to WIN… and go on to the MONEY round!!!!! But I mean… in a second she gets my clue, which was “SKY”!!!! And that’s where I am looking to THANK THE LORD for this moment in which I now get to go for the MILLIONS. Moreover, I beat Keri, who I just knew was going to shut me down.

During a break, it is decided that Monique and I generated the most points – so she is my partner for the money round. Regis reinforces that I am a journalist saying "This will be something to write about, won't it?". I tell him "I'm taking notes on everything you're doing". He and Monique laugh. He then asks me about my pass-time of karaoke-ing. I alert him that I love all songs by Diana Ross. He asks me for a little. Though not planned, here was a DREAM COME TRUE all its own as I begin to sing --- in a falsetto --- Diana Ross’ “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” (the crowd roars, Monique dances along, and Regis seems quite pleased with the musical interlude)! WHAT A RUSH as my arms are outstretched and the audience continues to celebrate the moment with applause!!! Now, for perspective, I sing more of a 2nd tenor/baritone [ http://216.117.188.141/rileyshowforkodjoe.wmv ](but do have a strong falsetto that I often play with in karaoke). On a stage in front of hundreds (and the knowledge that someday soon millions would see it), I'm not quite sure why I jumped into my Diana-esque homage (in the falsetto). But the spirit of Miss Ross took over and I went for it... and worked the crowd to boot. QUITE A MOMENT!!!!! (And the feedback has been generous… so, “eat your heart out Miss Ross…” or better yet, call me for a duet? Background vocals? Lunch?... smile!)

Now, it is on to business. We have to get five right each time from a descending pool of 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, and 5 passwords. This, while the stakes increase from $10,000 to $25,000 to $50,000 to $100,000 to $250,000 to $500,000 to $1,000,000. I get really excited as Regis goes over the rules. Caveat: Once you reach $25,000, you go home with no less than $25,000. In this moment, I’m thinking I want no less than $100,000 because I saw Betty White make that happen with one of the guests (and find out that her fellow celebrity ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Susie Essman helped her person get $100,000).

But $25,000 is my pointed destiny (as the game goes). We were en route to $50,000 when the clock struck :00.

Now, keep in mind, that is $25,000 more than I had when I got there four hours prior. And during this quiet, challenging summer (where the checks aren’t quite coming quickly enough), it is a welcome prize and huge uplift to my current financial woes.

Of course, my plan – with six figures or the million – was to:

* further support my nephew Noot (who is staying with me for the summer as he interns at HBO) with his college tuition at my alma mater Morehouse College where he is a junior (so – unlike me – he could be 37 and not still paying student loans, which I too would have paid off).

* Additionally, I wanted to give my sister something to absolve any challenges she may be having financially.

* Also, I would want to do something nice for my father (including pay him back for a recent loan that helped me get through June).

* And I would – of course – make sure my Ant gets something to support his art (exhibit, school, etc.). After all, he is responsible for how this moment came to be (as I’m certain I wouldn’t have pursued it without his nudging. I can be resistant that way).

* And to all my friends – like Ern (who actually came to support me in studio); Tata; Jules; Nichole; Michael; Elise; Lisa; Nat; D; and on and on, I could go (not a comprehensive list): there would have been some kind of trip or party or something to celebrate this moment.

* And WHAT ABOUT ME???? Yes! I would have begun to independently back the upgrade of my website to include production of a full-fledged show that would reflect my interests in pop culture and possibility (kind of a talk show meets variety show meets magazine show… but me, me, and more me… with guests of course! SMILE!).

Still, we will celebrate as we are not looking ANY gift horses in the mouth.

There are many things inside of my winnings that I will be able to create valuably towards my future, if not checking off the aforementioned comprehensively.

But I will take my late great mother’s only sister/sibling Mary Lee’s advice – relayed via her new favorite pass-time (at 70-something): texting – “Don’t make or offer no loans!!! That’s your blessing! Tithes paying pays off!” (as she knows I’m a tithes payer and that this is reward via our faith’s belief system). So, you heard it here folks… and it comes from the family matriarch!!!!! SMILE! No handouts!!!! It’s not enough for that, wouldn’t you agree?

And inside of this awesome possibility, I will continue to aim higher. Maybe my millions or billions will show up in another way that’s not directly linked to the prize… but to the blessed moment that seems to have turned much of those in my world (and beyond) on with a smile! So many letters and notes from people I know, but many, many more from people who I don’t know (or hadn’t seen in forever). They looked my blog and me up via the world wide web… and reached out with lovely feedback – like “You should have your own show!” Someone wrote: “Loved that you shined, looked so fine, represented black men well AND represented Savannah !!!”. So, there’s surely a lot of buzz about my appearance, including word from the casting folks (for the game show) that they will be reaching out to me NOT for more contestant-work, but for host-work. That’s lovely feedback. Also, my hometown’s local affiliate WTOC reached out to do a story and I got a call from the producers at “The Gayle King Show” (on XM Satellite Radio) that they’d like me to come in and be a guest on the show next week and talk about this momentous experience.

And there were many whose protection and observation I appreciate, but I say Monique was a good partner for me. She was there to win it with me. And I thank her for helping me bring home this ‘gold’. But given I came so close to competing with Betty White, I can’t help but wonder how much further I might have gotten had I played with her.

So close yet so far away… and onward… 20080709_52.JPG
