PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!

"LOVE LIFT US UP WHERE WE BELONG!!!"

Other than seeing the show, we’ve had an eventful week:

Ant’s buddies from Momentum Education (www.momentumeducation.com) – Ruben and Raul – did the transformative work with him. They are a couple. And Ruben asked us to join all of their families and friends for a surprise marriage proposal to Raul. rubenraoul1.jpgAnt nor I had ever participated in such and were excited to do so. They had pink and blue T-shirts for everyone adorned with lovely words and declarations around their relationship. We gathered at East 102nd Street and 5th Avenue at the entrance of the North End of Central Park. dianacentralpark.jpgOf course, I'm excited as it's been 25 years since Diana Ross was in this very park on The Great Lawn that inspired her Diana Ross Playground that is the very entrance that  Ruben and Raul used to come into the park at exactly the opposite end from where we were (Bon Jovi - by the way - is continuing Diana's tradition of free Central Park Concerts this weekend). bon-jovi-coming-to-central-park.jpgRuben’s friends set up their picnic at the North End Ravine which was just gorgeous as the waterfall served as a backdrop to this moment (http://www.centralparknyc.org/site/PageServer?pagename=virtualpark_northend_ravine). rubenraul1.jpgAfter we’d all gathered and waited (and waited… and waited), the moment presented itself for us all to walk lovingly towards the site. lizatcpe1.jpgA boom box blasting love songs began to play and soon Raul got that this wasn’t just any picnic. rubenraul3.jpgHe began to cry as the 50 or so of us revealed ourselves to him (holding beautiful pictures of them throughout their relationship. Mine had the caption “Will you marry me?” on it).crowd1.jpg Then, Ruben went in to pop the question and there was a resounding “Yes!!!!” from Raul. rubenraul4.jpgBy this time, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.patantcpe1.jpg And given it doesn’t take much for Ant or me to make it about ourselves, it became a bit of a rededication for us as we cried and held each other lovingly for quite a long time. raulrubencpe3.jpgBut more than he or I, this was a powerful message of love and support for two amazing guys, who we are happy to call "friend".patraulrubenantcpe1.jpg It was truly our honor to be a part!

Ant's and my love for each other has come in handy during some challenging times for us both. And we do what we can inside of love to keep each others' morale boosted and stimulated. This, when we're not just getting on each others' nerves. Fortunately, we have some great distractions to keep us joyful and light when we can't generate it from within (since it's gonna be a while before that ‘Password’ money comes. SMILE!). I have been feeling more immobile during my little freelance breather, despite some great, albeit less profitable projects I’m working on right now. And I’m not talking overtly flossy sacrifices (though I do miss my car service and my Houston ’s), but some basic bills that need to be paid (because I’m not used to being behind). This, as my Ant takes care of the core things (like mortgage, electric, cell, cable, etc.) to keep things as comfortable as possible. But it’s a lot to manage. Still, we try to keep each other up:

Tata and Jules joined us on one night (via the holiday weekend) for some “Red Robin” (www.redrobin.com/). fellaswithtatafair1.jpgThen, we got the luxury of another night with them at the Meadowlands State Fair (www.njfair.com/). Ern came along too. antpatfair2.jpgNothing like some rollercoasters; a little woman named Tina (and another with eight spider legs) - both of whom gave me the heeby-jeebies;tinytina3.jpg and some greasy comfort food to cheer me up.miguelpatfair1.jpg We got lots of laughs and a welcome celeb sighting: Miguel Perdomo (tagged as the first Dominican Supermodel). I’ve blogged about him many times before. He was hanging out with his family. miguelantfair1.jpg

On one night, amidst the lazy weekend (lots of folks were home this holiday), we joined our girlfriend Mara Schiavocampo who is responsible for my “Pound” impression on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams (on-line edition) – still clicking near a million between MSNBC.COM and YOU TUBE.COM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXc6x5JlJuw). patmaramsnbc.jpgAnt, Ern, and I hung out with her at her Harlem brownstone (as her husband Tommie is out of town). maraernpat1karaoke.jpgWe then went to our karaoke spot (www.karaoke17.com/) and sang the night away. ernpatmaraantkaraoke1.jpgThen, we went up to Washington Heights and hijacked Ern into a nightcap at “No Parking” (www.noparkingbar.blogspot.com/) – owned by my friend Brian, who is always the host with the most when I come in.patbriannoparking1.jpg This time was no exception. We call it Chelsea North. ernmaraantnoparking1.jpgThen, Amy Ruth soul food soaked up whatever needed to be soaked up at 4:00 am or so in the morning (www.amyruthsharlem.com).

Suddenly, there were no worries. Just time to go to sleep and have some sweet dreams - trusting that the sun will come out tomorrow..."... there (may be) mountains in our way, but we must climb a little higher everyday..."

"...GIRLS! SHOW THAT WORLD THAT YOU BELIEVE!!!!!"

million%20dollar%20password.jpgMany of you continue to reach out as you see me in the promos for “Million Dollar Password” hosted by Regis Philbin (www.cbs.com/primetime/million_dollar_password/). Well, I’m told that my episode runs Sunday, July 6 (8:00 pm/eastern). Please tune in… and ENJOY!

patchris.jpgMeanwhile, I’ve had more than enough to keep me busy over this last week. I got the chance to hang out with my mentee and soul mate in all things wise and philosophical Chris. He’s in grad school at the Interdenominational Theological Center (www.itc.edu/) but in town for some rest and relaxation. We met up at my favorite corn dog spot Cowgirl (www.cowgirlnyc.com), which ironically is where my friend Scott and his partner Tony joined Ant, best buddy Michael, and me last year during the Pride festivities (www.nycpride.org). TONYMICHAELPATRICKANTSCOTT.jpgThis year, they happened to be in town again (by way of business in Philadelphia with Scott’s boss Sheryl Lee Ralph). Though they were all due to be on a plane from Philly to St. Thomas on the morning of Pride this year, Scott, Tony, and another friend of theirs took a quick road trip from the city of Brotherly Love to a city inhabited and chockfull of ‘brotherly love’ Manhattan (on Saturday night before the parade i.e. Michael K., Valente, and many others) to wish us all Happy Pride (even though they only had a couple of hours to spare).prideouting1.jpg It was great to see them  and to catch up with Tony who shares a LOVE of Diana Ross’ 1977 “Baby, It’s Me” album in common.baby-it-s-me.jpg I alerted Tony that this special album (to us and many) is being re-released and expanded very soon. We’re hoping to spend more time with Scott and Tony in August when they come back east. Hopefully, Ant and I will get to go west to see Sheryl Lee Ralph’s annual AIDS benefit “Divas: Simply Singing” which Scott plays a key role in organizing (www.divassimplysinging.com/).

patdeborah.jpgSpeaking of DIVAS, they were out and about this week at “Cheetah Girls” best-seller Deborah Gregory’s book party, held at FashionOpolis Lounge in the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising (www.limcollege.edu/) for her latest tome “Catwalk”, a brand-new book series targeting children, tween, and teen girls (www.cheetahrama.com/). patbeverly.jpgSupermodel Beverly Johnson (starring in TV Land’s ‘She’s Got The Look’ - www.tvland.com/originals/shesgotthelook/);bevant2.jpg actress Lynn Whitfield;CATWALK__YRB__night_005.jpg and Nole Marin of “America’s Next Top Model” hosted the evening. He was so kind and funny (as he was on the show). He even introduced me to his mom.patnole.jpg  Actually, all of them were so nice and gracious as I introduced my nephew Herman and his Spelman sister to them. 20080626_29.JPGToo, it was great to introduce them to so many of my friends and industry associates who were in the house – from Theo Perry to Gordon Chambers (www.gordonchambers.com/) to my Morehouse brother Chris McDonald, whose poised to write the next best musical that Broadway has ever seen. noottinaandrewslakeshia.jpgAlso, Lakeshia got to meet her Spelman sister Sheila Kay Davis who is the Founder/Artistic Director of The New Professional Theatre (www.newprofessionaltheatre.org/) which held a benefit last month that Ant and I attended (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/20/a-reversal-of-mendacity.html). And screenwriter Tina Andrews (www.tinaandrews.com/) who I stumbled into – with Deborah – a year ago (around this time) is taking her latest work on Sally Hemmings (Thomas Jefferson slave/mistress/children’s mother) to Broadway. Stay tuned.deborahpatrickterrie.jpg Ebay’s Style Director Constance White (www.ebay.com/personalstyle) and Maroon’s restaurant owner Mitchell (www.maroonsnyc.com/) were also in the house as was author Terry McMillan who remembered my interviewing her in Santa Barbara a few years ago. Also, celebrity photographer Tar was in the house. I met him through my good girlfriend Camille some years ago and hadn’t seen him in a long time (www.tarboy.net).patdiazdantemarcus.jpg Also, my good friend Diaz - pictured here with my 'karaoke pushermen' Dante and Marcus - gave us a glimpse of that infectious smile that always lights up the room.diazant1catwalk.jpg And we’re always excited to see our plastic surgeon with the most Dr. Shrirley Madhere (www.drshirleymadhere.com/), who was also excited to see Ern and Tina, who also joined us for the night.patdrshirleyerntina.jpg

While en route to a second party (for the evening), we ran into my good girlfriend and colleague Rita who was dining at “the new” Lola Restaurant (www.lolaissoul.com). This fine, soul food dining experience is now in SOHO and is a site to behold. Just a gorgeous space. lolapat2.jpgRita introduced me to Lola and we had a lovely chat that may inspire my return to a NYC stage once they put an entertainment area into the restaurant. PatrickCabaret015.jpgAs it’s been a minute (http://216.117.188.141/rileyshowforkodjoe.wmv), I would love to get back into the groove of my ‘intimate evening of song’ that I’ve always enjoyed performing in intimate, cabaret/nightclub spots throughout Manhattan.PatrickCabaret012.jpgpatrickperforms.jpg

On that same night, a party that Grubman PR (www.grubmanpr.com/) invited me to attend (with my entourage in tow) in celebration of YRB’s “How You Rock It” Fall Fashion Issue (www.yrbmagazine.com/) was met with velvet-rope drama. Though I had been cleared to attend plus a few extras, it became an issue once we got there. That part, of course, is not a big deal. But the reps from the pr agency coupled with the guys at the door couldn’t seem to make a decision on whether I could get in with everyone or just some or not at all. It was quite the unprofessional scene. But sadly, that plays to the pomp and circumstance of NYC nightlife sometimes. Ultimately, I was able to walk my nephew Noot and his Spelman sister Lakeshia into the party – so they could experience it.aubreestylesp.jpg They saw Danity Kane’s (www.danitykane.com) Aubrey and rapper Styles P, which made the inconvenience worth the trip for them. Ant, Tina, and Ern patiently agreed to wait for us as they know how unreliable RSVPs and CONFIRMATIONS can be in New York City.

Ant and I didn’t have any problems at the Bleu Magazine 2nd Anniversary Party (www.thebleumag.com/). So many of our friends – like Devon, Ra-Fael, George, Seven, and Richard have put their blood, sweat, and tears into this periodical (which targets urban gay men), we just had to support them. richardpatrickbleu1.jpgWe too stumbled into the cast of “Finding Me” (www.thanks4findingme.com) – including co-star and friend Derrick L. Briggs (www.derricklbriggs.com/). findingmecast.jpgLike me, he’s quite the multi-hyphenate – so it’s exciting when we catch up on each others’ projects. “Finding Me” about which I’ve blogged before (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/12/20/holiday-shout-outs-for-the-kids-and-everyone.html) is scheduled to be released later this summer/early fall (and will hit the festival circuit as well).

patjasonpride1.jpgThis evening set the tone for other PRIDE festivities.jasonantpride1.jpg Ant and I were to join Ted Gibson’s partner Jason and some others at his salon to watch the parade (www.tedgibsonsalon.com) but instead we bumped into Jason on the streets of the Village as the parade was going on. patdustinpride1.jpgToo, I ran into one of my favorite fellow Diana fans Dustin, who shared excerpts of Diana Ross’ 1979 HBO Caesar’s Palace Concert (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqow17_je3E) & (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEnKEcBvBvw) with a Clearview Cinemas audience (in place to celebrate PRIDE by seeing “Mahogany” on the big screen one more time). pathenrypride1.jpgAnd there was Henry Mitchell, who designed the interior of my favorite boutique N (www.nharlemnewyork.com/). ricopatpride1.jpgAnd someone we haven't seen in a while: Rico. Welcome back! edwinandcompany1.jpgAlso, we had a good time between BBQ (www.bbqnyc.com) and karaoke (www.karaoke17.com/) with friend Edwin and many of his friends.

Speaking of N, Ant and I too got the chance to hang out with Jamar, his partner Miguel, Natasha, her brother Demetrius at the Port Authority Bowling Alley (www.leisuretimebowl.com/).bowlingouting1.jpg I won the 2nd match (not by much). I came in a close 3rd or 4th (not by much) on the 1st game, but who is counting. What did calculate? The fun and the silliness.patbowling1.jpg Oh! And I always like bowling alley food. This experience was no exception.patbowling6.jpg

Diana, by the way, has been popping up all over the place.missrosscartier.jpg First, she was featured performer for an audience of Janet Jackson, JD, Fergie, Ashanti, and others for a Cartier event (http://diana-ross.blogspot.com/2008/06/diana-ross-sings-at-cartier-loveday.html). dianaatlax.jpgThen, she had an audience of one at LAX when it seems her bag might have been missing (http://www.tmz.com/2008/06/26/diana-ross-pisses-off-another-airport-worker/).erykah_badu_29_b.jpg And though it’s not the first time she’s been a doppelganger for Diana, Ant's buddy (from their photo shoot in Essence Magazine) Erykah Badu (www.erykahbadu.com/) is channeling her inner-Diana on the artwork that promotes her new fragrance ‘White Patchouli’ which is under oft-Diana-inspired Tom Ford (www.tomford.com/).dianaeveryday.jpg

Speaking of BADU, her child Seven’s father Andre 3000 has a new, self-funded line of clothes set to be on the racks in Barney’s (www.barneys.com/) come Fall 2008. benjaminbixley.jpgThe 70-piece clothing line, Benjamin Bixley, is inspired by football players of the 1930's. It includes collegiate themes and athletic detailing.

Perhaps my friend Clarence could be a model for the line. He was once a book editor and was helpful to me in attempting to get his former employer to buy my book “Big Willies & Amazing Graces: gay men and their best girlfriends” – a collection of conversations between men and women inside that paradigm. Well, they (along with a couple dozen other publishers) LOVED the idea but didn’t BUY the book – leaving me to unearth some new strategies to ensure this book reaches the marketplace.clarence%202.jpg But Clarence will be too busy to advise me as he’s segued from the book world into modeling and acting. And AM New York (www.amny.com/) did a story on him this week (page 28). See it here:

ELISEANDPATRICK.jpgAnd another friend I’ve been meaning to shout out is my Elise Durham, media relations manager at Morehouse College (www.morehouse.edu). Well, in addition to being an Emmy-award-winning news producer (in her previous life when she and I worked alongside each other in Atlanta), she is now a Telly-award-winning producer as announced at the 29th Annual Telly Awards (www.tellyawards.com/) – honoring the finest in commercial film and video work. Her Morehouse Recruitment video (which she produced) won in the recruitment category. According to the Telly Awards, they received over 14,000 entries from the finest ad agencies, production companies, TV Stations and cable companies in the world this year. I’ve written about Elise and her work at Morehouse many times, but she continues to amuse and amaze us with what she’s doing at my alma mater. Oh! She’s a great friend, too!

forcoloredgirls1.jpgSomething to look forward to: My good girlfriend/theater marketer/audience developer Marcia Pendelton is working on For Colored Girls..." ,which returns to Broadway at Circle In The Square Theatre (www.circlesquare.org/)! indiawhoopietc.jpgAs blogged about before, Whoopi Goldberg is presenting two-time Grammy-award-winner India.Arie in this new, re-envisioned production of the groundbreaking work from celebrated playwright Notozake Shange. This play with music is choreographed by three-time Tony-winner Hinton Battle. And it’s directed by Shirley Jo Finney. It opens Monday, September 8 (WWW.FORCOLOREDGIRLSBWAY.COM). You won’t be able to buy tickets for this amazing re-envisioning until July 19. BUT, if you are a Black Theater Online Subscriber* or a client of WTG Group Sales, you can purchase group tickets TODAY! The discount price for groups of 15 or more is $49 per person during previews (August 19 - September 7) and $59 per person after opening (September 8). Jasmine Guy, by the way, is Directing another version of "For Colored Girls..." down in Atlanta at the 14th Street Playhouse (http://www.ikamproductions.com/coloredgirls).

"BACK TO LIFE... BACK TO REALITY...BACK TO THE HERE AND NOW..."

catparty1.jpgUpon my return from my 20-year high school reunion, I got back into business-as-usual mode. During these summer days of less revenue and more social to-dos, it can be trying (THIS JUST IN: I have to buy a new air conditioning unit for the co-op I own with now-three people in it during this intermittent heatwave-of-a-summer. It's not in the budget right now, but all will work out!). patantcatset1.jpgMy man is holding the fort for all of us, but we normally thrive off of our collective incomes. Still, we're managing it while loving each other and calling joy forth as much as possible (including hosting my nephew with as much fun fare as possible when he's not working diligently at his internship). nootatbbqprecat.jpgMeanwhile, I am working enthusiastically on a few summer projects that will bring in revenue closer to the end of July; Too, I am taking as many meetings as possible towards attracting some new work to pad out the rest of the year; and I am managing my nephew Noot’s, Ant’s, and my social calendars respectively (as there's always somewhere to go... and we make those outings work economically i.e. NJ Transit bus into the city instead of car service; BBQ instead of Houston's; no shopping while re-inventing some classic pieces; etc..nootatcat5.jpg You’ll recall, I saw “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” but Terrance Howard wasn’t there. His very able understudy (and my last-namesake) Robert Christopher Riley was on that night.rileys3.jpg Well, since one of the show’s hospitality sponsors is Remy Martin - www.remy.com/ (for which I had the opportunity to do a project earlier this year - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/2/2/beautiful-struggle.html), my friend and Remy brand manager Lamar Johnson made it possible for Ant, Noot, Noot’s Spelman sister Lakeshia (interning at VIACOM), and me to see “Cat” one more time --- front-row seats and Terrance Howard to boot.lapatnoot1.jpg It was also Phylicia Rashad’s birthday – acknowledged by cast and audience alike (with cake) during the bows. nootatcat4.jpgNoot and Lakeshia LOVED it! Ant and I enjoyed seeing the complete cast. They were on fire that night. Great drama! nootatcat2.jpgAfterwards, Noot, Lakeshia, Ant, and I got the chance to chat up Lou Myers (who is the preacher in this piece but Mr. Gaines in ‘Cosby-Show’-spinoff “A Different World”). I think Lakeshia and Noot were pleased with this night. nootatcat3.jpg

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” producer Stephen Byrd invited Ant and me to join him for the final performance on this past Sunday. That invite ended up being rescinded as some key folks in charge of the Tennessee Williams Estate requested a larger allotment of tickets. With that, we didn’t make the cut. But we felt honored to be asked... to have seen it twice... and to still be in the number to attend the wrap party with the help of one of the show’s audience development/marketing folks, my good girlfriend Marcia Pendelton.marciapat1.jpg She always takes care of us on the theater tip and Noot was excited to see her as the last time he was here, she was working on "Top Dog/Underdog" and he got to see it and enjoy all of her sharings about the theater and the role she has inside this big business. She couldn't believe how much of "a man" he has become. nootmarcia1.jpgEven with that, there was a little challenge at the door (as there can be in New York City with its many velvet ropes and lists). Kindly (before Marcia came down and handled it for once and for all), publicist and social activist/advocate Terrie Williams (www.terriewilliams.com/) stepped in and began to right the wrong (simply because that’s who she is and how I have experienced her since I met her in 1995). johnamosant1.jpgShe went a step further – introducing us guys to one of our favorite pop culture icons “James Evans Sr.” from “Good Times” AKA John Amos. nootjohnamospat1.jpgHis resume – from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” to “Roots” to “In The House” and on and on, have always impressed and continue to do so. Thank you, Terrie! And Miss Marcia, as always, you are fierce and so supportive! THANK YOU!antmarciacat1.jpg

johnamospat1.jpgThat John-Amos intro alone made the night worth the strategy that's involved these days to simply walk out of the house. But there would be more... lots more!!! The party’s backdrop was karaoke club “Spotlight” (www.spotlightlive.com), which is a great venue. B. Smith (www.bsmith.com) catered and what a lovely spread of fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni & cheese, and garden salad. anikanoot1.jpgSince my nephew has been on a mission to see stars since he arrived here in New York City, I was excited to accommodate him with a slew of sightings and photo ops.patanikacatset1.jpg There was Anika Noni-Rose, Ant’s and my buddy who has just been so gracious and kind to us since we met her through our mutual friend Ledisi back in December. antanika1.jpgAlso, Anika’s nemesis in the play Lisa Arrindell Anderson has been kind to us since “Cat” launched. She won’t be taking a break (like Anika). She’s shooting her part in a “Lifetime” film this week. nootlisapat1.jpgThen, Lynn Whitfield (who once starred as Josephine Baker in a huge HBO film) and Noot got to bond on their cable network in common. nootlynnwhitfield1.jpgOpera diva Kathleen Battle was in the house but like "Big Mama" (her "Cat" character) Phylicia Rashad and play director Debbie Allen (Phylicia's sister), she didn’t grant us a picture (though she looked beautiful and was so nice. So were Phylicia and Debbie who briefly spoke to Noot as he shared with Phylicia that he was a man of Morehouse. Her son graduated Morehouse). There was Tony Chisolm (known for his role in HBO hit show “Oz”) who Ant and I were happy to see. anttonychisolm1.jpgHe is a part of how Ant and I got the chance to connect on the night we met at the after party for “The Color Purple”. On that night in December 2005, after my Morehouse brother Mario introduced Ant and me, we spoke and then moved on to continue our evening at the party separately. However, with Mario’s nudging, I got the chance to research if my inkling about Ant (and what I thought was his attraction to me) was on target. While he was chatting up Tony Chisolm (also a funky monkey in one of my favorite films “The Wiz”), I was interrogating Ant’s coworker and best friend Sabrina for the goods. She highly recommended that I pursue further… and the rest is history (Almost three years later, “we’re STILL together!!!!”).freddienoot1.jpg I was moved (albeit shocked) that Noot was excited to see R&B legend Freddie Jackson as he can be such a tad select about who floats his boat (and that usually translates into people who are on the charts right now. This, though he's been reared on old school - in large part because of me). Regardless, Ant and I see Freddie all the time at our various social functions and he's always so kind and sweet. As Noot put it, “He sings ‘You are my lady’!!!!!!!” – a staple on radio’s varied quiet storms nationwide. He performed an impromptu "When I Fall In Love" with the house band. That voice is still tip-top!!!!freddie1.jpg “Big Brother Almighty” (Giancarlo Esposito), who is in the play, gave Noot some “School-Daze”-love.nootgianocarlo1.jpg Designer B. Michael and entertainment journalist Flo Anthony were also in the house. patfloanthony1.jpgIn addition, some of Noot's and my Morehouse brothers (who got to meet Noot for the first time) were in the house, like Charles Reese, Brook Stephenson, etc.nootpatcharles1.jpg Also, Noot (and - the other day at "Cat" - Lakeshia) got  to meet co-producer on "Cat" Alia M. Jones who is our Spelman sister.patalianoot1.jpg She was such a great presence during the show's run and has spent ten years in marketing, stratgegic planning, finance, and technology. I'm excited to see what her WHAT'S NEXT is after her Broadway debut with this historic production.patalia1.jpgnootpatshirley1.jpg My good friend, fine artist Glenn Tunstull, was also there (two times in two weeks. We must stop meeting like this unless we come to your art show on Martha's Vineyard in August - www.tunstullstudio.com). nootpatglenn1.jpgAnd our latest “Amazing Grace” (who Ant and I share and enjoy), Dr. Shirley Madhere (www.drshirleymadhere.com/), was a guest and looked gorgeous.nootshirleyant1.jpg It’s always good to spend time with her and I’m glad she and Noot got to meet.shirleyant1.jpg She thought he was so handsome (as many often do, after they say that he looks like me). SMILE! cicely2.jpgBut our highlight was having the legendary Cicely Tyson take a snapshot of Ant, Noot, and me (which she promises she will send to me... and when she does, I'll share it with you). With that, she would NOT pose for a picture with us (and was quite nice and funny about it). However, we managed to snag a shot of her taking her varied snapshots of different people who just had to come by and say HI. I've had the chance to interview Ms. Tyson a time or two (and she remembered our special moments together). It was great to be in her presence one more time.

One final note: I mentioned that my Morehouse brother Michael K. Watts and I are co-producing the “Hall of Fame” Awards luncheon for the National Association of Black Journalists (www.nabj.org), which gathers in Chicago in July. One thing we produce every year is a Memorial Video that looks at all the Black journalists who have died since our last convention. tom%20morgan.jpgOur first openly gay NABJ President Tom Morgan is in that number. I wrote about him during the Christmas holidays. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/1/2/dear-god-im-here-im-here.html). Pat_Tobin_Color_Photo.jpgAlso, a dear friend and fellow NABJ-er Pat Tobin recently passed away and will be missed by many (and me). And just this week, my NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force co-chair Greg Dunmore called with the news that a mutual friend of ours K. Maurice Jones passed away.kmauricejones.jpg He was an Editor-in-Chief of “Ebony Man” (many years ago) as well as Scholastic Magazine (www.scholastic.com). As his brother reached out to provide us with a picture, I shared the following with him:

Harry,

Please receive and extend my sympathy to your family. I knew Maurice (or K. Maurice - as I called him). In 1995, in fact, he even asked me to speak to his students at Scholastic (I got to take my visiting father and nephew, who was 5 years old at the time. They were here - along with my Atlanta-based sister - for a week from Savannah, Georgia). Before arriving that day, I thought it was just a career-day-speech I'd be doing. But Maurice designed such a special program and had every step of the agenda so well-appointed that he (who'd given me permission to bring my father and nephew) had gifts (for my father and my nephew) and messages (for my young audience) around fathers, sons, generations, and the importance of communication amongst black men, etc. My father was honored to be there. My nephew, though 5-years-old, remembers that special moment that wouldn't have been without Maurice's thoughtfulness. In fact, my nephew (now 19) is a junior at my alma mater Morehouse and again staying with me (and my partner Anthony) in New Jersey as he interns at HBO for the summer. As I write this (and share the news of Maurice's passing with him), he reminds me that one of the gifts Maurice gave him was a series of 'Goosebumps' books - his first time reading them, but not his last. After he finished those four he was given in Maurice's gift basket, he says he went on to buy more upon his return to Savannah (until he had read each and everyone in the “Goosebumps” series). So, much of my nephew's love of reading and focus on education can too be attributed to Maurice. That's a legacy piece that can't be underestimated and supports the reality and hopefully comforting thought that K. Maurice’s influence on many lives - young and old - will live on.

Sincerely,
Patrick L. Riley

"SOMEDAY WE'LL BE TOGETHER... WE STILL TOGETHER (KINDA')"

classof881.jpgOf course, I want to romanticize my return home to Savannah for my 20-year high school reunion. In fact, I might have channeled Stew, the middle-class black teenager who goes to Europe to find himself among the avant garde (before returning home for that morale of the story) in my favorite Broadway musical “Passing Strange” (www.passingstrangeonbroadway.com) – nominated for seven Tony awards (www.tonyawards.com/) and winner to composer/performer Stew for best book of a musical (presented this weekend in my current headquarters of New York City while I was in Savannah). Stew190.jpgI might have filed through my pop culture conscience and internalized what Diana Ross must have felt like when she said “Someday We’ll Be Together”. dianaandsupremes.jpgThen, one more time 13 years later with her Supremes in 1983 at “Motown 25” (You know how ‘the gays’ are always channeling their divas). motown25.jpg And – thereafter – with some ‘other’ Supremes in 2000 on her ill-advised, though critically-acclaimed, “Return to Love” tour (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoXGzVKAnxw).dianareturn.jpg But I wanted ‘my’ reunion to be a success. That wouldn’t work. Oh, what about the skit on “In Living Color” in which Kim Wayans and David Alan Grier portray Mr. and Mrs. Brooks – the seemingly loving elderly couple who constantly insult and attempt to kill each other. After numerous failed attempts, they resort to attacking each other. They usually end with "And we stiiiiilll together!" inlivingcolor.jpgThis humorous sentiment is one that my ‘clicque’ from school used quite often over the years after graduation as we were so close in school, it was unfathomable that we wouldn’t just be close forever.family2.jpg And though we’ve all gone and grown in different directions, we are – for the most part – ‘still together’ (kinda’) or – at least – on each others’ radars (even though half the posse didn’t show up for the reunion. We missed you Bernie, Tish, Cres, Tonja… and Win!).

godfather1.jpgWith that, I landed in Savannah on Friday afternoon and hit the ground running. Ern and I decided to grab a personal pan from our old post-football-game hangout Godfather’s Pizza ( www.godfathers.com/ ). erngodfathers.jpgFrom there, we headed over to The Savannah Mall ( www.savannahmall.com ) – another hangout where our ’88 classmate Lori Jones Lewis and her husband own a karaoke spot Star Watch (http://www.starwatchstudio.com/), which they donated to us for our hospitality night.20080617_26.JPG It was so good to see everybody!matthewreggiepatjames.jpg From the folks with whom I actually attended high school to the ones that I’ve known since elementary school (Largo Tibet), it was just one rush after another.largotibet2.jpg My best friend and “amazing grace” Natalie oversaw the planning of it all (with Lori and another classmate Terrance right alongside her). patnat2windsor.jpgAnd from the enthusiasm of our first embraces, it was clear this was going to be a special weekend.patadam1.jpg Classmate Adam (with whom I was in the band and show choir) proposed we do a duet. Strangely (but not unlike the twisted humor of the adolescent version of Adam), this married (and straight) man recommended Diana Ross’ and Lionel Richie’s “Endless Love”. Well, of course, I was down. We hopped in the booth and – quickly – decided he would do Lionel and I would do Diana. Well, in a nutshell, we were FABULOUS!adampat2.jpg And though a ballad, we got the PARTY started RIGHT! windsor1.jpgThe opener was just three hours – so an informal afterset (or three) were appropo. Texas Roadhouse ( www.texasroadhouse.com/restaurant/193/ ) – right upstairs from Star Watch – allowed us some room to decompress (Cadillac Margaritas, anyone?).monapattoniseernmonique.jpg There, the joy continued. Then, we headed downtown to “Jazz’d” ( www.jazzdsavannah.com ) for live jazz, tapas, and more cocktails. 20080617_56.JPGThere, we caught up in a less loud setting and continued to re-bond.20080617_53.JPG We were all reminded of how special our class was and how close we were. From there, a nothing short of comical late-night breakfast at “Denny’s” ( www.dennys.com/ ), which – at 3:30 am or so- left us laughing hysterically as we dined alongside a seedy set of grown-and-sexy professional people (That’s all I’ll say).20080617_57.JPG A quick trip to the bathroom introduced me to the deriere of one man who seemed to be taking a whore’s bath for good measure. Stunned, he kept the water running, his jacket on the basin, and ran into the sit-down stall. Ern, who was with me, proceeded to relieve himself in the stand-up stall. Traumatized, I spun around three times, screaming at the top of my lungs, and quickly exited. I’ll never be the same. Who knew – at 37 – we’d create a high-school-style night of crazy shenanigans. But compliments of our nameless, pantless friend, we did. I got home about 4:30 am and was on the phone with the-missing-Tish until 6:00 am (catching her up on all she was missing).

wading.jpgSaturday was beach day. Nat, Lori, and Terrance put together a wonderful set for classmates and their families at Tybee Island. 20080617_65.JPGWe partook of chicken fingers, brunswick stew, and a host of good southern fixins from one of my favorite Savannah spots Barnes ( www.barnesrestaurant.com ). It was awesome to see ‘the many chips off the old blocks’. natpatlydiahannah.jpgLots of kids! But all well-mannered and cute (as only the child of a Windsor Forest High Schooler could be). SMILE! And getting to know spouses of the friends from the day was also cool - like Reggie's wife Robin, who was a joy. I've blogged about Reg and his amazing success before - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2006/11/3/options-image-of-the-future.html )ernkevinpat.jpg. Here, too, we got the chance to see one of our ‘family’ members or ‘E-WING crewers’ that we haven’t seen in 19 years. It was Kevin who came all the way from Yale Divinity School for the occasion. Since middle school (and likely earlier, but that’s when I met him), Kevin was all about Donna Summer while Cres and I were all about Diana Ross. Both of them were out-of-favor with current music trends during our high school years, but you wouldn’t have known it from our respective obsessions. It was great to catch up on our jones as Miss Summer has a new album out right now ( www.burgundyrecords.com/donnasummer.php ).DonnaSummerCrayons.jpg And of course, Miss Ross is on tour. concertdiana.jpgAnd they have befriended each other in some intimate and great ways since Kevin and I last spoke – including Donna being invited to honor Diana at VH-1 “Divas 2000: A Tribute To Diana Ross” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjWcygT164g) and (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsOgq2Y2HuU). erindeeannepatwendy.jpgSeeing Kevin was truly a highlight! patmoniqueregern.jpgAlso, the beach provided a backdrop for my 29-waist from high school, but also my less-exciting bird chest that compared to former-geeks Ernie and Matthew’s transformed, hard bodies made me a little envious (if not aroused).mattpat.jpg Lookin’ good, guys!!!! ernpatreg.jpgAfter we waded in the water, we had to quickly get back to the mainland – so we could change for the culminating event. Once I did my quick shower, shave, and squeeze (into my brown Versace shoes), I had to stop by my late mother’s sister Mary Lee’s house to say HI and then quickly to my cousin Wesley’s Savannah-Arts-Academy-high-school-graduation cookout where I dropped off a small token of pride for his achievement (including a cash prize and the book “So You Think You Can Be President?: 200 Questions To Determine If You Are Right (or Left) Enough To Be The Next Commander-In-Chief” ( www.soyouthinkyoucanbepresident.com/ ). 20080617_99.JPGFrom there, to Ern’s place and we were off to The Savannah Trade Center’s elegantly-appointed Savannah-River-view property ( www.savtcc.com/ ) as everyone was dressed to the 9s. 20080617_140.JPGClass-of-88-er Terrance is the Operations Manager there. So, you must know how lovely this evening was. 20080617_116.JPGGreat food and spirits all around.angiepattonise.jpg (Can you say “shrimp and grits” in a martini glass? Can you say turkey station? Can you say pasta station? Can you say shrimp cocktail? Can you say sausage gravy and biscuits? 20080617_145.JPGOn and on, I could go… but then, I’d miss the delicious cake that was decorated especially for us!). patnat1windsor.jpgNat asked me to host a small program which allowed us to honor the handful of special folks from our class who passed away since we graduated. patwindsor.jpgAlso, it gave us the chance to celebrate Nat, Lori, and Terrence for all of their hard work. And several people came up and spoke of their memories i.e. the teachers, the spirit songs, the comraderie, the love, etc.reggiewindsor.jpg dancing2.jpgThen, came the dancing!dancing3.jpg From the electric slide to the cha-cha slide to the new line dances out there, we dropped it like it was hot all night long. ernpatcontrol1.jpgAs the night was scored by Victor Cooper’s selections (from 1984-1988 and before and beyond), Ern and I got the chance to bring back our Janet-Jackson-“Control” routine during the “Soul Train” line. We killed!!!! ernpatcontrol2.jpgNat and Lanette did one of their drill-team (Chatelaine) routines. natlanette1.jpgTerrrance, Nat’s husband Dwayne (who too is from Savannah and went to Largo Tibet, DeRenne, and Windsor with us before he moved to Atlanta), Lucius, Reggie, and their Liberty City crew did a whole prep/step/breakdance bit that had us all rooting them on.dwayneterrencetc.jpg And yet, curiously, it would be the final song of the night that would bring EVERYBODY together and make my wish come true. No, it wasn’t a Diana Ross song.lastdance1.jpg But I chuckle because it was another “diva of disco” (arguably gay icon) Donna Summer and her anthem “Last Dance” that inspired an emotional, but highly-charged and joyful, conga line, mosh pit, and love fest that we did not want to end.lastdance2.jpg Everyone – black, white, men, women, gay, straight (all in the Bible belt) – came together and celebrated ‘the spirit’ of a special class from Windsor Forest High School – The Class of 1988!!!!! SOMEDAY WE’LL BE TOGETHER? You damned right! And so it was. “25”, anyone?

patkevinmark.jpgOf course, a night so magical and fun couldn’t just end there.geneviepatrick.jpg 20080617_127.JPGSome had to be pulled off the dancefloor. Others just continued to pose for pictures because we truly wanted to make sure we captured the night as tomorrow isn't promised, but that this tomorrow came meant we wanted it to stay still - if only for one night. patrickjaydavis.jpg In addition to taking in the beautiful skyline that is Savannah River Street, we popped back over the bridge to enjoy River Street up close and personal as we did an afterset at “Wet Willie’s” ( www.wetwillies.com ). windsorwetwillie.jpgThen, that final hurrah was followed by a spirit-soaker at “IHOP” ( www.ihop.com/ ). ihopwindsor.jpg

It would have been great to sleep in the next day, but it was “Father’s Day”. Unlike so many of my classmates, I’m not a father. But I have one… and he is awesome. dadjrme.jpgIn fact, he made it possible for me to come to this reunion as some of my immediate funds were tied-up and I needed some “slush” pending some checks I’m anticipating (Being an independent freelancer, it can sometimes be feast or famine... and the credit only goes so far.). With that, I accepted a rare loan from my dad. And THANK GOD for it and him. Of course, he says he’s happy to do it as he knows I’m good for it. To celebrate his day, my sister came down from Atlanta on Sunday morning. We opened gifts with him (including cards from my brother and my nephew) before taking him to Geneva Restaurant, which boasts a cuisine that gives Paula Dean a run for its money. You’ll recall, I had some good banana pudding from there when I was in town a couple of weeks prior for that wedding (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/30/goodnight-savannah-i-love-you-see-you-next-time.html). Well, they’d sold out of that and the baked turkey wings. Fortunately, there were many other tasty substitutes from the cajun fried turkey wing appetizer, the crabcakes, the stewed chicken and cornbread dressing, etc. Dad seemed to really enjoy. dad.jpgAlso, I gifted him with these words:

Dear Dad,

What do I give a father who has just gifted me

‘room to breathe’ as I still stretch to be the core

of who you are: loving, strong, responsible, and

honorable?

Sometimes I hit the mark. Other times I don’t. But

I never quite master it the way you have. Hopefully, with

time, wisdom, and focus... I will get there.

Surely, there will be times for me to hand you a

material gift that knocks your socks off. As you well know,

this isn’t one of those times. But God willing, that time

will come.

Still, what I don’t want is another day to go

by without you knowing that I don’t take for granted all

that you have been and continue to be – as the ROCK of

a father that you are to me.

I admittedly reject it sometimes. I so want to be the

adult that doesn’t need his father anymore. And yet, I’m

clear that the blessing and my gift is that you are there for

me when I’m in need – even at 37. It’s a hard pill to swallow

and yet it warms my heart (all at the same time).

So, please know I LOVE YOU and I appreciate you. And

in addition to these words, I tangibly offer a resource guide that

promotes optimum health --- something that I hope you’ll

hold near and dear as you navigate through these golden

years (quite ably and already healthily, I might add). This,

so you’ll be here for us to love on you the way that you’ve

LOVED on us. The way that you continue to LOVE on me.

With ALL MY LOVE… your baby boy:

Patrick

It was great to spend quality time with Dad who stretched his generosity one step further today by taking us to “Sunny Side Up” – some delicious breakfast including hash browns with shrimp, broccoli, onions, etc.sunnysideup.jpg GOOD STUFF! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY, DAD!

While I was in Savannah , Ant was holding the fort in New York/New Jersey. Keep in mind, someone needed to look out for my nephew (though so many from the reunion were upset that they didn’t get to meet Ant, who made sure Noot had breakfast and got to work on time, etc.).noot%20at%20essence%202%202.jpg That said, Noot has adjusted so well and so quickly. He’s very independent and has a mind of his own. I sometimes think he might want to hang out (as I do often), but more times than not, he’s ready to get his good night’s sleep so he can perform at his optimum for his internship at HBO. Smart fellow! Still, he’s done some things, like an Essence/Toyota event last week that I chose not to attend. But there he was – posing with Essence ( www.essence.com/ ) editor-in-chief Angela Burt-Murray and others.noot%20at%20essence%201%202.jpg He got great shots of Keyshia Cole (who performed) as well. keyshia%20cole%20at%20essence.jpgAnt and I chose to audit my girlfriend Tracey Moore-Marable’s “Spirited Actor” monologue course ( www.thespiritedactor.com/ ). We had a great time.anttraceypatrick.jpg I enjoyed being reminded of the experience as I was one of her first students in the course 12 years ago. Also, I’m reminded that Tracey is the first person to introduce a solid, new-age context into my personal conversation around spirituality which compliments my core belief system as a Christian brilliantly.20080617_19.JPG It too was good to see her daughter Radiance who stopped by and has grown to be quite the young lady. And Tracey has lots going on – including a ‘Spirited Actor’ book (about which I’ll be writing more very soon) and a scene study course that she’s delegated her colleague and actress Joy to teach very soon. Be sure to check out her website for all the updates. On this night, Noot joined Ant and me at our old-standby BBQ (www.bbqnyc.com/) where we ran into some great folks I hadn’t seen in a minute.patsevengeorge.jpg George and Seven, who I know from Bleu Magazine ( www.thebleumag.com/ ), came by our table. In addition to his duties at Bleu, he is working on a play. Seven is doing amazing things alongside being a mother of four – one of whom is planning to go to Morehouse next year (Noot is giving him some advice). memichaeljasper.jpgOld friend Michael Jasper, trainer for the stars, popped by. Just in the neighborhood. Then, Demarco Majors, who I’ve written about before (as openly-gay basketball player), was also dining and told me he’s working on a book.demarcopatrick1.jpg Noot would say before meal’s end “Is there anyone you don’t know?” Well, such is “… the life of Riley…”.

He should have been with us the night we went to Steve and his wife ZZs place in Jersey (my name for her. It’s Luczema).stevezz.jpg Though the ribs and chicken burnt on the grill (as Steve and Ern were more occupied with getting our frozen cocktails just right), we had the best time. Plus, they got to meet Ant who they’d been wanting to meet for the first time.anternpat.jpg And how cute is their pooch? 20080617_7.JPGAlso, my Frankie Edozien ( www.edozien.net ) just celebrated a birthday. We toasted him at B Bar ( www.bbarandgrill.com ). He wanted to POUND me a la my latest NBC/MSNBC impression ( http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/6/6/a-pound-is-nothing-without-someone-you-love-to-share-it-with.html ). patfrankie.jpgWe also celebrated William Thompson, Frankie’s Diana-Ross-loving-friend who too was sharing a birthday. frankiewilliam.jpgNectarios was in the house and he, Ant, and I networked a bit on some possible projects we may work on down the line. patnectarios.jpgA great night was had by all. Meanwhile, my nephew called to tell us the lights went out (and he was home in the dark as the tri-state area experienced a tornado that caused a blackout in certain areas). By the time we got home, they were still out (and would be until 5:00 am or so). But I brought him some food, which you see him enjoying in the kitchen. Only the flash could allow you to see him. It was dark (We lit candles and brought out the flashlights before we realized they weren’t coming back on anytime soon. So, we turned in.). 20080617_14.JPG

Quick randoms:

I got the chance to produce (and be on-camera) for a segment that was based on the book “When I Knew” by Robert Trachtenburg ( http://www.amazon.com/When-I-Knew-Robert-Trachtenberg/dp/0060571462 ).when%20i%20knew.jpg I got the chance to interview some of the subjects who shared not when they came out of the closet (as gay) but when they knew deep down inside that they were gay. The project actually won a GLAAD Award – a nod for my work and my testimonial which anecdotally attributes my seeing a Diana Ross show in 1978 (at 8 years old) that forever changed me. She was fabulous and fierce and I was clear it wasn’t a “crush”. I felt like I knew her. I felt like I was her. I felt like she understood me (This, before I knew anything of ‘gay icons’ and the iconography that comes with it). Also, Gene Anthony Ray (“Leroy” from “Fame”) was a muse – an identifier of someone that I felt I was like but was ashamed to claim. Does that make sense? Of course, there are many examples from my youth of how I knew, but those pop culture filters tell more pointedly. With that, my friend Michael K. Watts invited me to a HBO documentary that Cinemax is going to air based on the book “When I Knew”. It’s title is the same. when%20i%20knew%201.jpgTo find out more, click on www.wheniknew.com/ and share your story, if you choose.

So, I throw that tidbit on the end because it shows that I knew I was gay deep down inside since even before high school (even before I knew what the word was or meant). Yet, there would be a couple of decades before I could 'come out' with that truth. Given high school establishes so much of what society wants us to be (right or wrong and for good & bad), it wasn't a time I could express it or even act on it. If I had, I would have been teased and made to feel shameful - most in particular because of certain Faith-based principles that exist in the church and the African American community. As it bubbled under (and inside of me), I didn't feel it was safe to acknowledge that truth that lied within. I didn't feel it was a sickness, a curse, or a sin. I just knew it wasn't a popular thing to be and I didn't want to run the risk of not being accepted (when so much of my identity was in making people like me, love me, laugh, etc.). Though it would be the first thought many would have when they met me (and I know that to be true), it didn't exist as long as I didn't say it was true. Here, 20 years later, I've rescued myself from that mindset and my heart warms at my own confidence in my skin and I'm happy with who I am and the choices I have made around this 'natural truth' for MY life (I didn't learn it at the club or via Diana Ross or from my sister or my mom). To me, it's divine. And I'm excited at all the "Amazing Graces" who have been in my life throughout this time (hence, why I'm shopping a book titled "Big Willies & Amazing Graces: gay men and their best girlfriends" - to celebrate that special bond). Still, I'm clear (and hear) that not everyone is on the page of my orientation and there are judgments, thoughts, and intolerances people may have about it (maybe old friends or perhaps spouses of old friends). And that's their prerogative. I know what's in my heart and those who LOVE me know of what I'm made. That's what is important to me. The rest can catch up when they get around to opening their hearts and releasing their judgments, self-righteousness, and superiority. My hope is for a day when someone knows what they are and how they love on the inside. And that same day they can safely express it and come out. So, then the world (and those in their world) will accept it... and we can all move on with our lives... and KEEP ON DANCING... together! "Someday..."

"A (POUND) IS NOTHING WITHOUT SOMEONE YOU LOVE TO SHARE IT WITH"

BARACKPATRICK.jpgSo it's the night that Obama clinches the Democratic nomination and - in the moment - I'm thrilled that I got my private time and photo op with him last August while in Las Vegas (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/8/13/audacity-of-hope-and-dreams-in-vegas.html).  My nephew and I are waiting for him to speak. When it came time, he and Michelle entered the stage - looking regal and ever the first couple (like never before). His swagger seemed cooler and calmer and more confident. Her style and sway channeled Jackie Kennedy but made it clear that she was her own woman. dianabillydee.jpgAnd then, there was this connection that I found as intimate and connecting (between this African American couple) as when Diana Ross portrayed model/designer Tracy Chambers to Billy Dee Williams' political candidate in "Mahogany" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DpvtcK4z-Y). When the two gave each other the "pound" and a "thumbs up", it just gave me goose bumps. pound.jpgI had to re-TIVO it, after looking back at my nephew who was watching it with me. "Did they do what I think they did?" I said. TIVO re-cued. "Yep! They did," I confirmed. "What a moment!" Soon thereafter, I went to bed.

Fast forward to 12:15 pm and I'm minding my own business (over the moment and unaware that it played significantly in a number of other places). I got a call from my NABJ friend and colleague Mara Schiavocampo who is Digital Correspondent for MSNBC/NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams (www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21688725/). I write about her often here in the blog (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/12/3/i-have-a-dream-today.html). She asked if I saw "the moment" and if I could come in and weigh-in on this high-profile pound and what it meant. I turned it around quickly (with Ant's support to pull an ensemble together - so I could hop in a car service and get to 30 Rockefeller Center - headquarters of all things NBC - by 1:30 pm). Mission accomplished and she shot my interview and filed it Wednesday evening: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22425001/vp/24974371#24974371.

Imagine my surprise when I found out today the piece is doing phenomenally well. 130,000 hits since being posted (That's just up to yesterday and I just got a call that - as of today - it's gotten more than 500,000 hits and is one of the most successful videos MSN has seen to date). That's the most watched news video on MSN today (and now in some larger window). And MSN is the most popular news site on the web. Because it's doing so well, it was considered to be a part of a week-in-review round-up on the week's TOP WEB VIDEOS for a segment on MSNBC. And I'm getting calls from friends who work at NBC affiliates that the piece is being included in their newscasts via a repository of pieces that are sent out to the local stations from the network via a feed. GREAT TO WORK WITH YOU, MARA!

This whole moment forwards my efforts to expand on my brand as independent personality/producer/writer in the realm of pop culture and entertainment. Hopefully more calls will come. I didn't get much time to take it all in before I had to get downtown to City Bakery (www.citybakery.com) to meet a dear friend I haven't seen in forever (and how did I manage to let her get away without getting a pic? I guess our revolution will not be photographed. I don't know. SMILE!). TraceyPhoto.jpg It's Tracey Moore-Marable of "The Spirited Actor" fame - www.thespiritedactor.com/ (I've blogged about her here before too). Tracey reminds me that I was a part of her first class in 1995. Moreover, she is now getting back into casting on top of what she's been doing as a director in the business. With that, she spent lots of time inspiring me with referrals and the right words I needed to hear as I navigate my journey. Ant joined us at a point and it was a great moment for him too to be inspired but also to meet Tracey as he'd met her children, her children's father (another of my best friends from Savannah), but not her. Well, now it was their turn to meet and it was a grand meeting, I must say.

Unfortunately we couldn't hang with Tracey all night long (nor get into our ritual of singing all things "Dreamgirls" before the day is done). She had to get to her monologue class that she teaches every Wednesday night (Ant and I are gonna pop by next week).patmauricecapitale.jpg He and I had to get to Capitale, NYC (www.capitaleny.com), the elegantly-appointed backdrop of The National Urban Technology Center's Gala Dinner (www.urbantech.org) which was hosted by old colleague (from my NBC days of producing special projects and his days of anchoring at NBC 4) Maurice Dubois (now at WCBS). ozpatcapitale.jpgMy good buddy Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has been so kind to me over the years (and Ant too), was one of the honorees at the event.patozantcapitale.jpg We were excited to support him. patstephencapitale.jpgHe was being honored alongside Stephen C. Byrd (producer of Broadway's "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"). patricklynncapitale.jpgLynn Whitfield (of "Josephine Baker" fame) presented.20080606_18.JPG My good friend Carl Nelson invited Ant and me. We enjoyed a wonderful table of 'characters' - including dear friend Stacie J (of "Apprentice" - Season 2 fame) - www.staciej.com - who just had a baby three months ago (She looks amazing! And her little girl's first name is my last-namesake with a twist. I forget the exact spelling).patstaciejantcapitale.jpg staciejcapitale.jpgCheck out her site as she is doing many things - including a jewelry line which she modeled for Ant and me.patrickbmichaelcapitale.jpg Gorgeous gown designer B. Michael (www.bmichaelcouture.com/) was in the house as was many from Carl's social network - including Reginald Van Lee, Earl Monroe, and a host of others.earlpatmsnbc.jpg I even ran into some of my NYABJ/NABJ buddies including Deborah C. Skinner, now Editorial Director of Interactive Media for Black Enterprise (www.blackenterprise.com). glennpatrickcapitale.jpgAnd another dear friend in the mix: Glenn Tunstull (artist extraordinaire) - who introduced me to Live Out Loud (www.liveoutloud.info), the LGBTQ mentoring organization that periodically books me periodically to speak to young kids (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/20/a-reversal-of-mendacity.html). He is looking as good as ever and planning on his next art show (on Martha's Vineyard... as always). Check his site out and his show - if you're in the area: www.tunstullstudio.com.

From there, Carl persuaded us to head up to the penthouse of the Royalton Hotel (www.RoyaltonHotel.com) - a move that allowed me to fulfill the intention of supporting friend and fabulous shoe designer (soon men's suits as well) Ron Donovan (www.rondonfoot.com). patrondonfoot1.jpgCarl enrolled a big group of folks to come and partake of this trunk show (even though it was wrapping up).rondonfoot5.jpg The second wind produced a number of sales for Ron. rondonfoot7.jpgAlso, there was time for many of us who had not hung out in a bit to catch up even further - like my Morehouse brother Raymond. patraymond.jpg

After that, Ant and I joined one of his Momentum (www.momentumeducation.com) buddies Ruben at a party in the theater district. citygymboys.jpgTouch (www.clubtouchnewyears.com/) was the spot. The beneficiary was City Gym Boys which deems itself "... the only fitness company dedicated to mentoring young men and women on the lifelong benefits of fitness and exercise..." (www.citygymboys.com/pages/home.html). This was its calendar release party - proceeds of which will benefit pointedly Boys & Girls Club of Harlem (www.harlembgc.com/).  citygymboys2.jpg

Tonight, Ant and I got to do a double date with our Tata and her Jules. julestatalalah.jpgWe went to see recent blog subject Lalah Hathaway (www.lalahhathaway.com/). antpatlalah.jpgThanks to industry girlfriend Juanita Stephens for hooking it up. B.B. King Blues Club was our destination (www.bbkingblues.com). lalahpat.jpgWe got a meet and greet with Lalah before the show, which was hosted by funny man (but clean and Christian) Jonathan Slocumb, my homeboy from Atlanta.jonathanslocumblalah.jpg It was good to see him again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmu7okiiKJk). Lalah performed an easy and laid-back set that was simply music to our ears. In addition to material from her new album "Self Portrait" (Stax Records), she performed her classics like "I'm Coming Back" and her recent Luther remake "Forever, For Always, For Love" (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/move-on-up-a-little-higher-lord-upgrade-me.html). She was in pristene voice and her band/background vocalists were the truth. If she is at a city near you, don't sleep. Get your tickets immediately.

Two quick shout outs to friends who are doing awesome things:

TED_GIBSON_PAT_TED.jpg1. You guys know how much I love Ted Gibson - hair stylist to the stars (www.tedgibsonsalon.com/). Well, on Wednesday, June 18th, he will be a part of teaching new beauty techniques at Henri Bendel's store. For more information, go to: www.henribendel.com/ or Ted's site above.

2. And my "Amazing Grace" Nichole's brother-in-law David Cole has just started a new project.  He has just launched a mobile directory listing for DC & NYC that offers places to Eat, Play, Style and Pray. These are designed to be viewed on your mobile phone and puts the "city in your pocket". The mobile user places www.citibuzz.mobi/DC or www.citibuzz.mobi/NYC into their mobile browsers. Please support this brother who is truly like a brother to me. CONGRATS DAVID!11-27-2006-29.jpg
