PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!

Janet%202.jpgI'm chronicling the degree to which and the amount of times our 'divas' keep Anthony and me motivated. It's a lot. My cup runneth over with Miss Ross blessings (and sightings) including her first-time lecture this week in Houston (http://www.brilliantlectures.com) for a series that has - in years past - featured Sir Sidney Poitier, Dame Julie Andrews, and Queen Noor of Jordan. (Its mission is to advance the perspectives of the Houston community, local youth, and their families through a series that positions respected role models in this speaking role).houston__19_.jpg Msk%20and%20A.jpgBut for Anthony (and my dear friend Michael), this time is all about Miss Janet Jackson (www.janetjackson.com/). PATPOSEDISCIPLINE.jpgWe got the opportunity to join Janet last week in New York City at World Stages Theater (www.dodgerstages.com). Janet%20LA%20Reed%202.jpgIt was a listening party for her new project "Discipline" - due out February 26 (http://www.janet-world.de/). Anthony, Michael, and I attended along with a number of other Janet enthusiasts. (You'll recall, Ant and I got to spend some personal time with Miss Jackson just five months ago as she promoted her starring role in Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?" (www.WhyDidIGetMarriedTheMovie.com)
- out on DVD this month as well (Valentine's Day) - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/10/11/what-has-pop-culture-done-for-me-lately.html). patjanet.jpgThere also were a number of people in the house - promoting their own projects and good news. My good girlfriend Shelley Wade - radio diva with the most for Z-100 in New York City (http://zzone.z100.com/shelley); Kiss 108 in Boston (http://www.kiss108.com/pages/shelleywade.html); and 106.1 KISS-FM in Dallas (http://kissnation.1061kissfm.com/shelleywade) not only invited me to join her for some roundtables she will be moderating around this season's "American Idol" (www.americanidol.com/), but she hipped me to the coolest news of all: She will be singing the National Anthem at a New York Knicks game later this month (http://zzone.z100.com/shelley/blog/2008/02/02/join_me_as_i_sing__the_knicks_game). You go girl!shelleypat.jpg patalecia.jpgAlso, in addition to introducing me to lovely Houston native Alesha Renee, host of BET's #2 show "The 5ive" (www.bet.com/OnTV/BETShows/the5ive/) and sometimes "106th and Park", my buddy Ra-Fael Blanco (www.myspace.com/2rsentertainmentandmedia) has a client who is preparing to drop something new. It's Bad Boy Entertainment/Atlantic Records/Cozi Music recording artist CHERI DENNIS who is gearing up for the release of her much anticipated debut album, "In And Out of Love" - also set to be released on Tuesday, February 26, 2008.  cheridennis.bmpThe album features Dennis' smash debut single, "I Love You," as well as the current hit, "Portrait of Love (featuring Yung Joc and Gorilla Zoe)." The chart-topping single was produced by Soul Diggaz (Beyonce', Mary J. Blige, Brittany Spears) and continues to create a stir at multi-format radio stations nationwide and the companion video was directed by Petro (Rufus Wainwright, Kelly Clarkson). Check out "Portrait of Love" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=XDCCYkS_YAo . Also, make sure to go to www.CHERIDENNISONLINE.com for more information and check out a sneak preview of Cheri Dennis' interview for www.UNeQMagazine.com at http://youtube.com/watch?v=nA5iF8o38Fc. Too, she will be in New York City next Tuesday at SPLASH (www.splashbar.com/). malachipatrick.jpgAlso, shout out to hot new performer on the rise, MC Malachi, who is preparing to go on the road to Amsterdam and other stops throughout Europe before dropping his album this summer. And he's a part of an independent film project that's soon to be released (Stay tuned for more on Malachi. He is one to watch!). QUINCYPATRICK.jpgMy friend Quincy Ballon (www.galleryqb.com) who I've referenced here before for his Brooklyn-based 'gallery qb' (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/12/16/extreme-makeover.html) presents a new show: A Question of Beauty: Works by Anika WilsonLA%20Patrick%202.jpgL.A. Reid hosted the affair and Ant and I got a chance to chat with him for a bit. Whenever I see L.A., I'm reminded of how far he's come from the days in which he and I lived in Atlanta. LA%20Anthony%202.jpgFresh from playing percussion for The Deele, he and Babyface launched LaFace Records.ATT00001.jpg Fresh out of Morehouse, I started my career with Fox 5's "Good Day Atlanta" (www.myfoxatlanta.com/myfox/) for which I was primarily responsible for booking and interviewing so much of LaFace's cartel - including TLC, Toni Braxton, Usher, etc.

But back to Janet, we had a great time. Ant and Michael were in heaven. PATDISCIPLINE.jpgMichael%20and%20Anthony%202.jpgWho better to break it all down than my friend Michael K. Watts whose e-newsletter "LIVE! from Front Row" is soon to be housed as a website for concert reviews, tour information, all things music. It will be your front row seat to the magic of live entertainment. Take a moment and bask in our experience of Janet (according to Michael):

Janet: My Evening of DISCIPLINE with Janet
Janet: My Evening of DISCIPLINE with Janet
I just got home from another exhilarating evening with JANET.  I was one of the few hundred people who had the privilege of attending L.A. Reid's special listening event for Janet's upcoming DISCIPLINE album at the New World Stages off-Broadway theatre complex in New York.  ladiscipline.jpg

What a night.  I have so many thoughts and opinions swirling through my head.  Where to begin?  Note that my take on the album is only after hearing it once.  I might totally change my mind on some points when I get to hear it again and again.  What you read here also is only what my hands could scribble and my mind could recall.

DISCIPLINE is an album that combines an electronic 80s sound with the present-day computer age, all fit to rock your body on a dance floor near you.  This is mostly a dance album which will be your aerobic workout soundtrack for the year.  Computer-driven beats and sounds from the streets buttress Janet's light and playful voice through emotions of love lost, love found, and love sustained to the fullest.  What else could you want in a Janet album?  Disciplinehqcover.jpg

After standing in line outside for about 40 minutes, the event began with a pre-reception in the lobby.  We all received souvenir DISCIPLINE lyric booklets wrapped in a black, 4-flap envelopment, with a dark red plastic seal stamped with a "J".  This was very helpful because it meant I didn't have to try to write excerpts of lyrics down, but I still had to scramble to get lyrics to the interludes down, which were not always complete.

The lobby was decorated with huge black-and-white Janet photos plastered on drapes and on the walls.  We drank banana and blueberry rum smoothies and ate hors d'oeuvres until they let us inside Stage 1 for the listening event (the complex has five or more small theatres for off-Broadway productions).  My second row center seat was the perfect place to see and hear everything, especially since I had received word that Janet would definitely be in the house.  Later, I'll tell you about Janet's grand entrance.

L.A. Reid entered the stage just after 7:30 p.m. and said a simple hello and quickie introduction--nothing more needed to be said!  The lights dimmed and the "Janet" logo on the video screen was replaced by a 5-minute or so promotional video (or possibly the official electronic press kit or E.P.K.) of past photos, music video footage and concert footage.  The video was dazzling (especially for a fan) and serves to reestablish who she is and her impact on the music industry and the world.  When the video was over, the room erupted in applause.  On the screen we then saw "Janet" and "Discipline" logos interspersed with black-and-white photos from the past and present (yes, new ones), all treated with a vintage film effect of lines and blemishes, as we heard…Janet_Jackson-hot.jpg

1.  I.D. (Interlude)

This introductory interlude throws back to the "Online" interlude from The Velvet Rope album (released during the advent of the internet).  We hear the keys tapping as Janet logs onto her computer which talks back to her.  The computer says, "Select, DISCIPLINE… DISCIPLINE now loading… DISCIPLINE now playing in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…"

2.  FEEDBACK

A slightly shorter version of the leadoff single "Feedback" comes right in after the countdown of the prior interlude.  This version ends on the final echo of "Feedback, Feedback, -back, -back, -back, -back" with no instrumental fade.  janetmag4.jpg

3.  LUV

This song offers an excellent segue from the previous ending echo.  This is a playful, youthful song about falling in love unexpectedly.  The mid-tempo, beat-pounding track contrasts Janet's light, innocent voice that "oohs" throughout.  The secondary hook says, "Got me caught in a wreck, I'm a mess / Got me caught in a wreck, I'm a mess."  This song is headed for radio soon, and rightly so.  gallery_header_08.jpg

4.  Spinnin (Interlude)

Janet speaks… "Love is the one thing that keeps you up… …spinning round like a rollercoaster."

5.  ROLLERCOASTER

This is a hottt, bouncy urban track that's not so electronic as other songs.  Her voice is still sweet but is almost overpowered by the heavy, hip-shaking beat.  The rhythm of the hook is similar to "Escapade" (from the Rhythm Nation 1814 album), and it could easily be included in a medley with the song on tour.  The seemingly innocent lyrics go like this:  "There's a high level of luv goin on / The feelins are just way too strong / The reason that u got me gone / is baby cause u turn me on…"  The song ends semi-abruptly.  janetmag7.jpg

6.  Bathroom Break (Interlude)

Janet and her girls are in the bathroom at a club.  We hear dialogue:  "Every time I turn around, another guy is trying to… …where are we goin' tonight?... we gon' shake some thangs, we gon' break some thangs."  One of the girls says they should hurry up because the bathroom is starting to "stank."

janetmag6.jpg7.  ROCK WITH U

This is the techno house music track of the new Janet era!  Imagine Janet crawling across feathers, rolling around on a bed silk, all the while oblivious to a thunderous house beat shaking all the walls around her.  Still, she's gazing at you and singing like everything is alright.  THAT's what this song sounds like.  This is an electronic 80s-style techo house song with all the "ooh's" and more "ooh's" we ever wanted from Janet.  Another song reportedly headed to radio, but I think the clubs might beat them to it.

8.  2NITE

"Something in the air has got me feelin like I want it 2nite," she sings at the beginning of the song.  This is the song that describes the realization you get after you meet someone and dance with them at the club, and you know you want to take them home.  This is another hot, neck-snapping dance track with a driving beat that almost smothers Janet's voice, but then we're used to that from her past albums.  You can dance or rollerskate to this fast-paced track.  "Come on!  Come on!" she chants.  janetmag2.jpg

9.  CAN'T B GOOD

Janet slows things down for the first time, but on a dance album like this, even the mid-tempo songs feel danceable.  The first verse describes the morning after reflecting on the night before.  But by the second verse, she "interscinds" (new dictionary word from Janet) her feelings because she's afraid of falling in love.  Nope, this can't be good, she sings.  But this song is very nice.  It's a song of almost melancholy with a beat similar to "Where Are You Now" (from the Janet album), old-school Janet vocals (hers and background), and instrumentation that will remind you of Michael Jackson. JANETPATRICK.jpg

10.  4 Words (Interlude)

Janet speaks softly:  "Four words--love, fate, hope, destiny."  The interlude goes right into the next song.

11.  NEVER LETCHU GO

This is a ballad and ode to her lover about the good and bad times, but through it all she'll never let him go.  "I don't wanna give up on our fate / And I don't wanna think that it's too late / So if something is broke / Let me go and fix it / And if something is lost / Let me go and get it" she sings.  This is a nice album cut but not really single material.  Janet gives us the "whoaaa" ad libs we crave, along with melodic keyboard lines and a too-short guitar solo at the end, but this song isn't quite ready for radio. janetmag3.jpg

12.  Truth or Dare (Interlude)

Janet and two friends are talking over percussion that sounds similar to the popping percussion of the "Full" interlude from The Velvet Rope album.  We hear what sounds like male and female voices.  The "truth" question is asked:  "Describe the greatest ex you ever had?"  In this question, the word "ex" sounds like "sex," likely as an intended pun.  The answer to the question comes in the next song, which starts immediately after the question is asked.

13.  GREATEST X

This mid-tempo-slow song has piano lines that give the song a pop feel.  It definitely has radio potential, but my jury is still out.  It's an ode to her ex that she let get away.  And to this day, she regrets leaving him for what she thought was greener grass on the other side.  The hook:  "I loved u, and / U loved me / And I just couldn't see tomorrow, baby / And I cared for you / And I didn't see us through / Now I know in my heart u will always b / The greatest x ever."  This song starts off good, but then starts to build to something greater toward the end with really emotional guitar lines.  And then, for some reason, the song fades WAY too quickly.  This is the kind of song that needs to breathe with a longer ending, but unfortunately it doesn't.  Sigh…janetmag1.jpg

14.  Good Morning Janet (Interlude)

Janet wakes up and logs onto her computer, which greets her.  She's still missing her ex from the previous song, and the computer serves as her best friend and confidant for a moment.  Janet says, "It was incredible while it lasted, but I know I can do so much better."  With these words, the next song begins.

15.  SO MUCH BETTA

This song sounds like a song Prince could have produced for her.  Very quirky-funky-soul.  Janet's computer chants at the beginning.  The lyrics say "Tired of being number 2 / I can do what she can't do / So much betta I'm for u / So so much betta I'm for u."  The computer continues to motivate her.  The bridge breaks from the song musically with melodic vocals:  "I'm what you've been missin / U might need to jump on this."  The song ends with the same lines and a final sounding of a gong.

16.  Play Selection (Interlude)

Janet is still at the computer and decides to change the song she's listening to.  We hear "Play selection," and the next song begins.  janetfeedbackcover.jpg

17.  THE 1 (Featuring Missy Elliott)

Janet and Missy are always a good combination, but this song is going to likely grow on me with more listens.  Here is another indescribable but off-the-chain track of beats and symbols.  This is an empowered women's anthem that is throwing game to a man to get him in bed.  Missy's rhymes are HOTTTTTT!!!  In her first rap she says, "Tell me how long is it boo--7 inches?  Yup that will do."  Here are more Missy lines:  "Let you hit the poo-poo, do what it do / The nooky got them boys going coo-koo / I'm sick like the flu too, boy I thought u knew."

*********Then, the music stopped.*********

Lights came on the stage, and L.A. Reid escorted Janet out.  The room explodes in cheers and applause.  Cameras are flashing.  ATT00002.jpg

Blender magazine editor-in-chief Joe Levy comes out to join them and interviews Janet for just a few minutes. ATT00003.jpg Janet didn't say anything really new or earth-shattering that we haven't already read in recent interviews.  She said she left the "kids" rehearsing to be with us tonight.  Joe's last question was about how a lot of her albums are about love and sex.  He then asked why that was so.  Janet replied, "Because I love love, and I love sex."  And with that the crowd went up in laughter and high-five's, and there was nothing more to be said.  They all left the stage, and the album continued.  Unfortunately, several people started leaving.  Those that stayed behind heard more…

more%20janet.jpg18.  WHAT'S UR NAME

This song was not played in its entirety--it faded up a bit into the song.  This is a strong track that is more like old-school Janet.  Romantic keyboard lines and a beat similar to a song we've heard from Janet's past.  The hook:  "What's ur name babe / Do u live around here / Cuz I ain't never seen u before / But I wanna see u some more / What's ur name babe / Put it right in my Sidekick / And I'll hit u back / Soon as I get home."  janetmag5.jpg

19.  The Meaning (Interlude)

Ooooohhh, this interlude is fire!  It asks, "What is the meaning of discipline?"  The rest was sometimes hard to make out, but here it goes.  We hear chords similar to the hook of "I Get Lonely" (from The Velvet Rope album) over a crackling sound.  Janet is breathlessly speaking words that can be used to define discipline.  "Self control… punishment."  She's in a zone, sounding like she's in pain but enjoying it.  She talks through her pain:  "A whip used in the practice of self-mortification… or an instrument of chastisement."  The song fades into the next song.  more%20janet%202.jpg

20.  DISCIPLINE

I hereby proclaim this song as the tour show-stopper.  She will invite a man on stage and discipline him on this one.  Period.  It's a ballad with a slow-n-sinister, dragged-out beat.  Percussion pops like a whip while crescendos and background vocals invoke emotions of crying helplessly and writhing in pain.  Janet is panting.  She sings, "Babe, I need some discipline 2nite / Don't hold back / I've been very bad / Make me cry / Got to make me cry / Babe."  Those are the cleaner lyrics--the rest has allusions to masturbation, role play domination and submission activity.  Enough said.  There's a slightly extended ending, but we never get that good beat-down breakdown you might expect from this kinda song.  LOL

21.  Back (Interlude)

This last interlude is Janet's final conversation with her computer.  "I hope you've enjoyed your discipline," the computer says.  more%20janet%203.jpg

22.  CURTAINS

This album closer is dedicated to her fans.  Janet sings about what fans love most--her tour shows.  I wouldn't call it a tour opener nor a tour closer; this song is just for the fans.  In the spirit (not sound) of "Whoops Now" (from the Janet album), this is a playful, mid-tempo song with a little soul.  The percussion is poppin' and horns are blowin'.  More "ooh's" and melodic background vocals.  She sings:  "Time to close the curtains / I only take requests from u / Just tell me what u want me to do / I promise u / You'll be screamin encore when I'm thru."

And with that, the album ends.  The album is not terribly long--we were done in about an hour, including Janet's brief appearance--largely thanks to songs which were of only average length.

What else can I say?  Nothing more until I hear the album again in private.  I can't wait until you hear it, too!

THANK YOU!

Thank you, Michael!!!! And Janet!!!prestige04pm4.jpg

TASTY FREEZE OF CHICAGO‏

chicago%20003.jpgI was called to Chicago for an assignment and it reconnected me to all of my favorite folks in what some call "Mississippi North". Through -1 and -3 temperatures, I managed to successfully complete my work and then do a little play. chicago%20006.jpgThe conductor of my social time is usually "my Chicago Carl" who - with his busy schedule - made sure my evenings were chockful of fun, excitement, and diversity - as always: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/chicago-without-ti-ti-can-it-be.html

On Thursday, we had late night supper and cocktails at Dublin's Pub on N. State Street. There, our good girlfriend Itika joined us. So good to see her. chicago%20001.jpg

On Friday, our Vince joined us and we let Calypso (http://www.calypsocafechicago.com/) feed us. chicago%20007.jpgGreat Caribbean cuisine (and - oh! - those rum punches i.e. THE MARLEY!). Vince is always a wealth of new ideas, inspiration, and advice. Love to hang out with him!chicago%20005.jpg

On Saturday, Carl and I diverted to the Southside of Chicago for a midnight taste and a drag show. It was quite the neighborhood spot Club Escape (www.clubescapechicago.com). Then, Sunday, I requested a space where we could watch The Grammys (www.grammy.com/). chicago%20017.jpgCarl's friends Pierrre and Jerry who live on the Northwest side of Chicago (in an area called Bucktown) hosted. Pierre's boyfriend Larry was also in the mix.chicago%20012.jpg And we had the best time. Carl, who is such the cheerleader of everyone in his life, gathered all the guys around Pierre's computer - so he could show them my blog. Over fresh and tasty fries, chicken wings (both prepared in their kitchen), and pizza (from around the way), we were first entertained by that. chicago%20013.jpgThen, we enjoyed a less-than-spectacular TV presentation. Still, with the best steadily-flowing daiquiries I've ever tasted and the most enjoyable company I've been around in a minute, mediocre LIVE TV needed only to be a backdrop with periodical hightlights. I should point out that in the modest mix of talent, there were some moments worth mentioning. HOP%202.jpgFirstly, you've heard me reference that my family's church is The United House of Prayer for All People (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/8/30/time-passes-quickly-here.html). Remember my run-in in New Orleans? HOP%203.jpgWell, one of the "shout bands" from the kingdom The Madison Bumble Bees (from Winnsboro, South Carolina) participated in the Aretha-Franklin-led Gospel medley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xh8lFT4Vr_Y). WHAT A BLESSING! It was very exciting for the members of the church. As I was working here in Chicago, my sister called with the word that they were to be on, but we didn't know they would be under such a spotlight. I have heard the Bumble Bees many times as they would often travel to the Savannah 'House of Prayer'. In our church, the shout bands are quite a  ministry its own - moving the people to get their "Holy dance" on with bombastic style. When the Bishop would come to town, there would be a host of bands playing - one after the other, each known for their own sound and rhythm. There were so many of these bands, I didn't know who from what and what from who (keeping in mind that because I didn't 'grow up' (from birth) in the House of Prayer (since I was born in Tokyo and my parents traveled all over via my Dad's status in the Air Force)). With that, once we moved to Savannah (when I was eight), I was always a little disconnected from the 'culture' of it all. Still, I was close to it because my mom and siblings were into: "the bands"; "their members"; "their annointing" (in their role as 'shout bands'); "their bookings" (as House of Prayer bands -- from different branches of the church [all over the nation] are good for a periodic, national booking on television i.e. Kennedy Center Honors, Macy's Day Parade, Mardi Gras, etc.); etc. Ttruth be told, they are like 'closed-circuit' ROCK BANDS with GROUPIES to boot (within the kingdom)... and like I might spend hours talking about our DIVAS or favorite pop singers, my folks (mom, brother, and sister) might spend hours talking about the bands and other House of Prayer  going-ons like it's "ACCESS HOLLYWOOD" or "ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT" (the appointments, the gossip, the services, etc.). Sometimes, the band members (of the many respective bands all over the kingdom) can even be perceived as the 'bad boys' of the church (a la sacred-BOBBY BROWNs or JODECIs, etc.). My brother - a member of the local Savannah House of Prayer band ("SOUNDS OF THE SOUTH" - also locally and nationally recognized) - is an example of one of those GOD-fearing, committed members who ANNOINT folks daily through their music. But sometimes their inner-struggles could sometimes lead them astray (though their LOVE of ALL THINGS CHURCH (HOUSE OF PRAYER) never waver. It's quite the IRONY that - from my observations (as a child) - perplexed me (since I didn't necessarily carry the SPIRITUAL connection that my brother, for example, did. He was older). But often, I felt like I was less close to my late mother because my brother was so involved in the church (via the BAND) and that was a place (the church) that she REVERED and in which she seemed most HAPPY and HERSELF. So, while I might have been SMART and always on top of my BOOKS (of which MOM was proud and just as CONNECTED), my brother (despite his rebellion) was/is heavily connected and - ironically - passionate about the CHURCH and its teachings (which was a conversation and bond that ONLY he and mom had. With that, I did still do things here and there in the church that played to my talents i.e. singing, speaking, etc. But because I was younger and - unlike a lot of Savannah native House of Prayer folks (READ: kids who grew up in the House of Prayer nationwide), I participated more sporadically (with my father insisting that school be my top priority, which meant I couldn't go to weeknight services all the time (if there was homework to do and to ensure I got my good night's rest - so I'd be alert in the morning for school). Other kids from our church could come out to services and just had to make sure they kept up with their studies. I sometimes was envious of them. In the end, no one way was better than the other. And different strokes for different folks. But I wouldn't change my experiences in The House of Prayer for anything. For me, growing up (kinda' in a SECULAR context... but always SPIRITUAL and LOVING THE LORD), some of those restrictions always made me ask questions of my elders? "Where is the money going?" "What happens if there's no House of Prayer in a particular city (It's nationwide - even in Chicago)? Are those people still going to heaven?" Mostly, my mother would tell me: "Stop being mannish and asking so many questions?" or "Just believe and have FAITH!" or "Stop being fresh and always thinking with your head?" or "Some things don't need to have answers." The intellectual that I was echoed the sassy entitlement of Beneatha in "A Raisin in the Sun" (which is scheduled to be presented on television - starring Phylicia Rashad, Diddy, Audra McDonald, and Sanaa Lathan [as Beneatha, who was originated by one of my favorites, the late Diana Sands] - www.abc.go.com/specials/raisininthesun/index). There's a scene that always resonated with me. diddy-raisin-sun-400ml0817.jpgBeneatha (of the Southside Chicagoans known as The Younger family) says: "Mama, you don't understand. It's all a matter of ideas, and God is just one idea I don't accept. It's not important. I am not going out and be immoral or commit crimes because I don't believe in God. I don't even think about it. It's just that I get tired of Him getting credit for all the things the human race achieves through its own stubborn effort. There simply is no blasted God-there is only man and it is he who makes miracles!"

After Beneatha had finished her argument, Lena slapped her across her face and made Beneatha say, "In my mother's house there is still God". Lena stressed out her points that she will not tolerate any ideas like that in her house, or as long as she's alive and running the household. Now, I never went that far in my rebellion nor have I ever felt there wasn't a God, but  I've always been a questioning, intellectual type. And in the old days (and sometimes even now), there are certain things that the church does not condone. They haven't so much relaxed, but as we move on with the time, those concerns pop up less and less (unless they pop up more and more)... and when they do, they can take us back to the ALTER or the MOUNTAIN (and remind us on whose shoulders we stand around how we are to operate in the world as it relates to our FAITH and CHRISTIANITY - specifically in THE HOUSE OF PRAYER). It's quite a journey, but one I'm BLESSED to be on. I do know - despite my perhaps different views and choices - that I am HIGHLY FAVORED and GOD LOVES ME!!!!!

But I digress: I am talking about Chicago and THE GRAMMYs!!!! <That was sure a Freudian, therapeutic, slippery slope... but I won't edit it out! It might speak to someone as it was clearly speaking through me.>

Anyway! Back to the Grammys, Beyonce sprinkled her prelude to Tina Turner with a shout out to Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, and many of the other great DIVAS on whose shoulders she stands. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X-OzbGYghc). beyoncetina.jpgBut controversy reared its ugly head in the wake of B introducing Tina as "The Queen" (when "The Queen of Soul" was in the house). 080213_Aretha_Franklin.jpgI didn't think it was a big deal at first, but my sister pointed it out during our day-after-Grammy review (and I don't want to put too much energy into a conversation around false "idols" when I just got finished talking about "God" (but such is "... the life of Riley..."). steve%20jones.jpgWith that, my sister was on point because, "USA Today" is reporting (via Edna Gundersen and NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force Legacy Award recipient (2006) Steve Jones) that "The Queen of Soul" - in the house that night and recipient of her 20th Grammy - is not happy. In fact, her statement reads as follows: "I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyoncé, however, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy," Franklin said. "In addition to that, I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love to Beyoncé anyway." Grammy producers say they meant nothing by it. Beyonce's father and manager says he won't dignify it by even forwarding the message to Beyonce. "I'm not even going to take this to her," he said. "Something this ridiculous, it's childish, it's unprofessional. And it's a sad day when egos get bruised because somebody used the word king, queen, prince or princess." And both ladies are truly LIVING LEGENDS. Tina gave a brilliant performance (in her late '60s) comprised from her comeback hit album "Private Dancer" (for which she won the Grammy. My "Queen" Diana Ross presented it to her. She did "What's Love Got to Do With It" and my favorite "Better Be Good To Me". Plus, even Tina admitted on that same project that she wasn't the "Queen". Instead she said: "I Might Have Been Queen" - another strong track from that album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1deMQMPrMs  Moreover, Aretha sang for the gods (and God) in a yellow dress she sported in the audience of the "Kennedy Center Honors" on the night that "my" Diana was "Queen" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_E0bMGJNJXo) and (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0u3D-y5V_A) and (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DScsAt8vInA). There's room for them all on the throne... and when they get there, they better get on their knees and PRAY - thanking GOD for all his GRACE in affording them these amazing careers, right? (Well, the "Queen of my Heart" is my late, great mother whose name happens to be QUEEN! For real!!! Queen Elizabeth Bellinger Riley - R.I.P.

janet_gil_saam.jpgAs the synergy of "old" and "young" goes, my Anthony ("young") highlights for me ("old") that the out-of-this-world "FEEDBACK" video by Grammy-award-winning Janet Jackson (not present at The Grammys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AEBY8AX-C0 or DIRECTOR'S CUT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jisifu561TA) seems to be inspired in part by an out-of-this-world photo shoot my Grammyless-though-nominated-many-times Diana Ross did during promotion of her first self-titled album in 1970. Diana-Ross-Photograph-C12118300.jpgYou can see some of the iconography on this You Tube video of "Dark Side of the World" - a mashup mix combining Diana's version with Marvin Gaye (featuring stills from those lesser-known photo sessions that look "Feedback"-esque). Watch closely (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxjUVhgt63I).missross1.jpg Speaking of, Berry Gordy was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement nod.

And on Monday, there was no Diana nor Janet at the spot where Carl entertained me, but there was WHITNEY, CHAKA, TAMIA, and a host of other female impersonators at THE BATON (www.thebatonshowlounge.com). And because these "guys" were so good, there was no question who "The Queens" were on this night. Nicole Love Dupree, pageant queen of them all, even came from Atlanta to share her beauty and bling. chicago%20020.jpgSome of these ladies... ahem... men can really fool you, I tell 'ya. Just beautiful. Go girls! Guys...

Wednesday I had to get back to Ant. Valentine's Day was approaching... and there was someone to share it with...PATANTKAROKE9.jpg

And Thanks Carl! Happy Valentine's Day... to ALL the folks I LOVE!

"SO MUCH LEFT TO DO... SO LITTLE TIME..."‏

Let me take some time to shout out folks in my circles (and beyond) who are doing it:
1. Fellow journalist and friend Evolyn Brooks is expanding her brand to include: her "In My Solitude" Blog. Please check it out: http://inmysolitudeboutique.squarespace.com Congratulations Evolyn!

2. During my time at Morehouse (www.morehouse.edu), I spent lots of time at Clark Atlanta University's Mass Media Arts Department (www.cau.edu/). jennifer.jpgOne of my classmates Jennifer Ransaw Smith is blogging to - for WOMEN WHO ROAR:  http://womenwhoroar.squarespace.com/

3 After I chose to leave CNBC (www.cnbc.com/) back in 1997 when I was producing for Geraldo's nighttime show "Rivera Live!", I got the good fortune of training a beautiful spirit named Hakimah to replace me. Well, her latest project is called "Swoosh! Inside Nike" (on this month at CNBC). See this special web page for the show - including inside sneek peeks and show info:

http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=632054169 or http://www.cnbc.com/id/22492149 or yu can also use the friendly URL  insidenike.cnbc.com . KEEP DOING IT, HAKIMAH! I'M SO PROUD OF YOU (Meanwhile, we must get some HOUSTON's time in very soon!). And another friend from my CNBC days, Miles Anthony is forwarding his passion into now and the future as an entrepreneur and CEO of Righteous Music Media, LLC (www.RighteousMusicMedia.com). Miles is an "Artist Friendly" Manager, A&R Executive, and Executive Producer. miles.jpgHe, our friends from work, and I would spend lots of time in the streets of NYC - enjoying live music, networking within this entertainment business, and sometimes just casually hanging out and enjoying each other's company. He is a Native New Yorker, who calls Harlem ome. Check out Righteous Music Media, LLC at www.RighteousMusicMedia.com. One of his clients, Darien, is being shown much love in the UK.Darienpic1.jpg There is an article and picture on a UK website promoting his single with Reel People and his forthcoming project: http://soulchoonz.blogspot.com/  and more on Darian via his MY SPACE - www.myspace.com/DarienOnline. Keep doing your thing, Miles! Let's catch up soon!
4. As I look to upgrade my blog to website with video content, I was inspired when I stumbled onto Tyler Perry's website (www.tylerperry.com/) and saw his talk show. patandtyler.jpgAlso, one of my favorite late '80s/early '90s artists Pebbles site annointed me in a way (www.sisterperri.com). sis_p_short_crop_photo.jpgPebbles, too, was an industry friend during the mid-'90s when she was married to L.A. Reid and managing TLC.tlc.jpg
5. Ant and I bumped into Chrisette Michele (www.defjam.com/site/artist_home.php?artist_id=611) or (www.myspace.com/chrisettemichele) during Fashion Week. CRISETTEPATRICK.jpgLittle did we know, she's got lots going on. You can hear her vocals on the new Nivea commercial (www.nivea.com/home). Just this week, she was featured on an episode of my favorite show "Girlfriends" (www.cwtv.com/shows/girlfriends) - an episode we hear was directed by Tracee Ellis Ross (www.traceeellisross.com/). lynn%20crisette.jpgAnd I have a word out to my Nichole's good budy Mara Brock-Akil ("Girlfriends" creator) as there's buzz that this is the show's last season (and that maybe there are not going to finish the outstanding episodes in the wake of the writers' strike). Stay tuned as I get a handle on this. I can't imaging my favorite show wrapping up with out a wrap-up (READ: Toni coming back one more time!).
scottcollinant6.  After receiving critical and audience raves, as well as a 2007 MAC Award Nomination for it's sold-out Off-Broadway run, my friend (and often-fellow-auditioner) award-winning Host, Radio/TV Personality and Comedian Scott Nevins brings his hit one man show Celebutant: Don't You Know Who I Think I Am? to Los Angeles for it's West Coast Premier at the ACME Comedy Theatre (135 N. "A FEW GOOD MEN"

RSCOTTFRENCHTHEMAN.jpgIt’s still Fashion Week! ( www.mbfashionweek.com/newyork/ ) RSCOTTFRENCHPATRICK.jpgToday, Ant and I attended our new fav designer R. Scott French (www.rscottfrench.com/) who presented his new Fall 2008 line of men’s suits and casual wear. RSCOTTFRENCH1.jpgHe was happy to see us afterwards and wants us to come to the showroom to see everything up-close-and-personal. Of course, I will walk out with half of it. (Well, probably not, given my budget… but I might take a piece or two). RSCOTTFRENCH4.jpgThe troop of models looked familiar. This guy Jared Cotter – a Top 20 finalist from “American Idol” ( www.americanidol.com/contestants/season6/jared_cotter/ ) – was one of them. Remember his “Let’s Get It On”? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kspgDt1Mvyk) RSCOTTFRENCH5.jpgAnd a handful of them were plucked from “Make Me A Supermodel” (www.bravotv.com/Make_Me_A_Supermodel/). TYSONWITHMODELS.jpgAfterwards, we saw their mentor and the show’s host Tyson schooling them on perhaps where they fell stiff. He took took a moment to pose with me. TYSONPATRICK.jpgTyra, on the other hand, couldn’t stop to pose, but was happy to see me as I approached her with the cliché of all clichés when you run into a supermodel you’ve met before (and interviewed before) but are not sure if they remember you: “Do you remember me?” (“Uggh!” I say to myself. “Why did you say that?”). TYRA.jpgShe said “Of course, I remember you! How are you?” As her crew, glam squad, security, and entourage cradled her out of the tent, she waved. Another VERY PRESENT diva for my list of PRESENT DIVAS – including Diana, Beyonce, Janet, and Kimora. CRISETTEPATRICK.jpgAlso in attendance: Miss Chrisette Michelle ( www.defjam.com/site/artist_home.php?artist_id=611 ) or ( www.myspace.com/chrisettemichele ) with a short cut that contrasted the shoulder-length locks she was sporting when we saw her perform a few months back. CHRISETTE_MICHELLE_2.jpgShe was very sweet and approachable. ANTCRISETTEMICHELLE.jpgShe was sitting next to Trey Songz ( www.treysongz.com/ ).TREYSONGZCRISETTEMICHELLE.jpg He too was warm and full of hugs and smiles.TREYSONGZCRISETTEMICHELLE2.jpg I liked him a lot. ANTTREY.jpgJust an all-around good guy. TREYPATRICK.jpgAlso, stylist and actor with the most Phillip Bloch (www.phillipbloch.com/) was in the house (recently seen in the film "The Unseen" - now on DVD - www.morofilms.com/theunseen/). PHILIPBLOCHNIGEL.jpgHe sat next to former model/photographer/hottie, "America's Next Top Model"s Nigel Barker (www.cwtv.com/shows/americas-next-top-model09/cast/cycle09-nbarker), who posed across the runway for me. NIGELFROMANTM.jpgAnd from HBO's "The Wire" (www.hbo.com/thewire/), J. D. Williams was in the house - sporting his R. Scott French (as I sported as well). He was seated next to us and quite nice. I got a pic of he and Ant. WIREGUYANT.jpgAs we left the Salon, we stumbled into Robert Verdi (2nd time for our 2nd show thus far - http://www.robertverdi.com/). He was doing his fashion coverage on the American Express Fashion Network (http://www.americanexpress.com/style). VERDIATWORK.jpgWe opted out of the After Party which was scheduled nine hours after the wrap of the 11:00 am show. But it was scheduled to be held at Equinox Fitness ( www.equinoxfitness.com/ ) on 10th Avenue (between 16th and 17th Streets). Tommy ( www.tommy.com/ ) is next for us on Thursday; however, a litany of potential assignments came in today that may prevent me from attending. But if all pops off with this particular project, I might be able to walk out of R. Scott French’s showroom with half of the line after all.

"BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE"

PATANT.jpgOn this Sunday morning, Anthony and I are basking a bit in the glow of a wonderful dinner we had last night with new friends celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson ( www.tedgibsonsalon.com/ ), his partner Jason, and a mutual friend (between those two and Ant and me) Dr. Shirley Madhere ( www.thenewaesthete.com ) or ( www.drshirleymadhere.com ). TEDJASONSHIRLEYPATANT.jpgYou’ll recall, Ant and I met Dr. Shirley at an Amy Dubois Barnett party last fall at the SOHO Grand ( www.sohogrand.com/ ).PATRICKDRSHIRLEY.jpg We hit it off with her immediately. Ant invited her to my birthday party in November and she came. Around that time, my fellow Scorpio Ted, Jason, and I met in Chicago. I knew that they would be BFFs for Ant and me. TEDJASON.jpgUp until last night, we only had the chance to hang out at his salon one evening.TED_GIBSON_PAT_TED.jpg But finally, we “Big Willies” got in our dinner (with the synergy of an awesome “Amazing Grace” to boot. Jason just knew we’d hit it off with Dr. Shirley. When all the names were put on the table, we amusingly uncovered that we already knew her and had already hit it off). TEDJASONSHIRLEYPAT.jpgNow, in my zone of unpredictable assignments that can show up at a moment’s notice, I was originally scheduled to be in DC for a shoot. Since it took a minute for us all to get a date and time that worked, I wanted to make sure I could get to DC and back to NYC in time for dinner. Fortunately (and conveniently so), the shoot was cancelled. Unfortunately (for revenue), the shoot was cancelled. But most importantly, what reigned supreme was the opportunity to call joy forth inside of great friends and good people (at a time when Ant and I could use a boost). And latest addition to the Meatpacking District “Bagatelle” (www.bistrotbagatelle.com) was an optimum backdrop. It’s an upscale French bistro with an intimate candlelit interior that shines on top of a white canvas that is the trim throughout the dining room. The people bring the color and we watched as the room of white turned into a kaleidoscope of many faces - including our dining neighbor, film director Oliver Stone. From roasted chicken to cote de boeuf (made with grass-fed beef), we all found ourselves ‘comforted’ by this cuisine. Specialty cocktails like “Le Blues de Manhattan” (made with Makers Mark, muddled blueberries and blackberries, Chambord and sweet vermouth) gave me a tasty excuse to graduate from my standard ‘kir royale’ as I sipped on Jason's drink of the night. But I regressed to the 'kir royale'. A friend of Jason who is a critic for “Wine Spectator” magazine (www.winespectator.com/) recommended “Bagatelle” and recommended he drop her name to get a reservation at this new hot spot. It worked and now this recommendation will keep on giving as I spread the word. We too got a character of a waiter named Aaron.AARON.jpg He not only shot a picture of himself, but joined us for one of our group pictures. Dr. Shirley and I got to practice our French with him (mine - of course - the more literate, elementary version. Dr. Shirley is quite fluent... and chockful of French and English inspiration and wisdom that has left us all motivated for 2008. Thanks Ted, Jason, and Dr. Shirley for providing us with a wonderful evening.AARONTEDJASONSHIRLEYPATANT.jpg

As it is fashion week, surely Ant and I are in the mix. We’ll be attending our favorite “American Chang” (www. americanchang.com/) and “R. Scott French” (www.rscottfrench.com/) tomorrow. And Tommy Hilfiger is on Thursday (www.tommy.com/). But the most popular MODEL in my world right now – no SURPRISE! – is my Anthony. YES! MY ANTHONY! AHHEAD2.jpgHe booked – as a MODEL – a photo shoot with Erykah Badu (www.erykahbadu.com/) for ESSENCE Magazine (www.essence.com/). Her new album “New Amerykah” is coming out soon and this layout in which he stands right next to Erykah as her bodyguard will be on newsstands by the end of this month. erykahbadu.jpg(This means Erykah has touched my DIANA when she honored her last June for the BET Awards - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L98RMa3fqnM .

And now, she's touched my Ant. I'm also reminded that she too pays homage to Diana in the video for her latest single release "Honey" in which she sports Diana-esque hair and does a mock take on Diana's "Blue" album cover by recreating its likeness (among other iconic albums from Grace Jones, Nas, De-La-Soul, Ohio Players, EPMD, Minnie Ripperton, LaBelle, Olivia Newton-John, etc. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNJt5ADHzIY). Diana-Ross-Blue.jpgSo the iconographic synergy between Erykah, Diana, and ANT is just kismet to me! I’ve always LOVED Erykah Badu… and still). I’m so proud of Ant as he navigates – in forward motion – to establish himself in this new place called New York City (He’s only been here since March but has attracted some great opportunities including a small part in Terrence Howard film “Fighter” [out this summer]; lots of production work; art projects-in-progress; credited and paid fashion stylist [including his favorite “Ken Doll” (his words): ME, and still maintaining a grasp on the temp market which he does when things are quiet on the media/art tip). With ALL OF THAT, both he and I know (from our respective experiences as freelancers who are truly about using our GIFTS inside of our PASSION), the numbers don’t always add up (more "accounts receivable" in waiting than "accounts payable" right now). And it can be frustrating as we battle the challenges and – in tandem – unapologetically choose to live these ABUNDANT and JOYFUL lives. As the LAW OF ATTRACTION goes, I know we are destined to have each and every one of our dreams come true – even when it may seem too dire to show up that way. And the evidence is not just in our knowing that we can survive the struggle, but as Anthony puts it, it’s in knowing that it is a “Beautiful Struggle” – a line lifted from rapper Talib Kweli’s 2nd solo album from 2004 (www.talibkweli.com). talib-kweli-beautiful-struggle.jpgAnd for what we are experiencing of the good, the bad, and the ugly in this real life, it’s truly ALL GOOD and building our character to BE POWERFUL and UNSTOPPABLE in our pursuits… and COMPASSIONATE and VULNERABLE in how we show up in the world. Of course, both Ant and I learned this in our course MOMENTUM EDUCATION (www.momentumeducation.com) but LIFE keeps on teaching us new lessons around these very insights.

With that, our good girlfriend Adrienne Stewart who is National Sales Manager for all things Kimora Lee Simmons – Baby Phat and KLS Collection ( www.kimoraleesimmons.com/ ) invited us out to witness the unveiling of the Fall 2008 collection from Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons and KLS Collection. PATADRIENNEANT.jpgThe Roseland Ballroom ( www.roselandballroom.com/ ) provided the backdrop. And of course, there could be no Kimora Lee Simmons party without a slew of A-to-Z-listers in the house. And Ant and I were excited to see them all. PATANTKLS2.jpgOn the day her Tru TV show was cancelled ( www.trutv.com/ ), Star Jones Reynolds wore a brave and confident face amidst the clamoring media to support Kimora. She (and her friend Lisa Raye [ www.lisaraye.com ] – actress and the first lady of Turks and Caicos [ www.turksandcaicostourism.com/ ]) graciously posed with me on the runway before the show began. And the fashions - by the way - were awesome. The KLS couture - in particular - was beautiful. There were some romantic, classic silhouettes on the gowns that reminded me of old-school Hollywood icons like Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, and Joan Crawford. And of course, Kimora and the girls came out for their bow.KLSWITHDAUGHTERS.jpg PATLISARAYESTAR.jpg I also got to ki-ki and cut the fool with Miss J ( www.cwtv.com/shows/americas-next-top-model/cast/jalexander ).MISSJPATRICK2.jpg He was seated a stone’s throw from Miss Tyra Banks ( www.tyrabanks.com/ ) with whom I didn’t get the chance to photo op.MISSJPATRICK1.jpg But we did get a moment with Miss Amerie ( www.amerie.net/ ) who was sporting a lighter color of hair which I complimented.AMERIEPATRICK.jpg She says her mother likes it better.AMERIEANT.jpg Also, my National Association of Black Journalists’ (www.nabj.org) buddy who we met in Las Vegas, Jacqueline Williams, came from Milwaukee to be in the mix. It was good to see her. JACQUELINEPATRICK1.jpgAfterwards, we all went to the after-party at Suzie Wong ( www.suziewong.com.cn/ ) in Chelsea which is party central. Many were in the house. Though I’d heard about the Brooklyn shop “Pieces” (www.piecesofbklyn.com), I had not met its owner Latisha Daring. Adrienne introduced me to her, pointing out that Latisha was the first boutique in New York City to embrace Kimora’s KLS Collection. LATISHAPATRICK2.jpgAdditionally, Andre Harrell was in the house. PATRICKANDRE.jpgSome exotic dancers provided a sexy backdrop for the party.PATWITHDANCERS1.jpg Miss USA 2007 Rachel Smith who I’ve met before struck a pose with me.RACHELPATRICK.jpg Our current “America’s Next Top Model” Victor/Victoria Jaslene ( www.cwtv.com/shows/americas-next-top-model ) also gave us some shine. PATRICKJASLENE.jpgAlso at the party: TV personality and style expert Robert Verdi alongside whom I’ve had the chance to audition for some spot TV projects; ROBERTVERDIPAT2.jpgAlso, Piper, the ‘sistah’ from Tyra-Banks-ANTM-spin-off “The Shot” ( www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/the_shot/series.jhtml ).PIPERPATRICK.jpg My buddy from BET’s Black Carpet Miss Beverly Smith ( www.bet.com/OnTV/BETShows/blackcarpet/ ) was in the house. PATBEV.jpgAnd Miss Vivica A. Fox was there too. PATVIVICA.jpgAs Kimora’s folks B.J. and James held down the fort, Kimora actually called me to walk even further into her velvet-rope zone to visit for a minute. I've had a chance to interview her before (as well as Russell). So, she knows me (though I must admit I'm always impressed with how present she is with people - including little ol' me). Seated atop the lounge headboard that aligned the wall, Kimora posed with her man Djimon Hounsou, Jaslene, and others.JASLENEKLS.jpg Then, she and I did a run for the camera. As Ant took the pictures, he said he got it (just so we could ease on out of what was becoming a mad- house). But Kimora knew he didn’t get it and generously said “Have him give us the camera and someone in here will take it.” PATKLS1.jpgHe handed it over and we got our pic. But he too got a couple of good ones from his angle as well. Also, NYC party photog Johnny Nunez captures us as well. Kimora wanted to be sure. I love it!PATKLS2.jpg

From there, we went to support my new MY SPACE friend Dominick San Juan ( http://www.myspace.com/dominicsanjuan). PATDONSJ.jpgHe was selected to perform in this national competition sponsored by SHURE Microphones and Sam Ash Music. DONSJPERFORMS.jpgIt took place at “Blaggard’s Pub” ( www.blaggards.net/ ) in Manhattan. DIAZPAT.jpgNTMANT.jpgOf course, we ran into many of our usual suspects – like Diaz (who alerted us that he was sporting Latino Royalty again - www.latinoroyalty.com), Toyce, et al. TOYCEPAT.jpgAnd we posed accordingly. But the night belonged to Dominick who blessed us with his talent – great voice and original songs.

PATMARCOSANT.jpgSpeaking of supporting the arts and expression, Ant’s friend Marcos, who hosts OPEN MIC MONDAYS ( http://www.myspace.com/onemicnite ), allowed us to use his event, which he holds at East Village’s Hacienda, as a backdrop for interviews I was commissioned to conduct for Remy Martin ( www.remy.com/ ), which is celebrating the launch of its LIMITED EDITION bottle of cognac designed by celebrity photgrapher David LaChappelle ( www.davidlachapelle.com/ ). PATJULES.jpgWe talked to folks all over New York City (Harlem, SOHO, and Lower Eastside) on their thoughts of this uniquely designed bottle and LaChappelle’s work and the synergy of art, spirits, and fellowship. The interviews went very well and the artistic folks that flowed out of Marcos’ set made for great soundbites as well. PATREMYPROJECT1.jpgOh! And Anthony was so inspired by the organic evening (for which my Tata and her fiance joined us), he graced us all with an awesome poem that was totally well-received. The folks were truly snapping for “the kid”. ANTPOET.jpgNow, Ant is pushing me to go up one night and sing. Someday.ANTTATAJULESPAT.jpg Oh! And my Morehouse brother Khalid came by to support as well. Thanks Khalid! KHALIDPATRICK.jpgThis was a fun project on which to work and reflects some other lucrative, thinking-out-side-of-the-box directions I can go in as far as attracting creative work. Though I’ve always attracted new and exciting fare for my work plate, I can also identify those points in which I can play it safe. Now, I’ll reconnect to those pieces of me that – at the beginning of my career – would produce morning TV news by day and act in a friend’s student film by night. In fact, a reminder of that time came to me via a former Air Force roommate of my Savannah buddy and film/commercial director Maurice Marable who I’ve written about before (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/4/-weve-come-a-long-way-baby.html).patandmaurice.jpg Well, this guy Les G finds me via the BLOG as he was searching to find his old Air Force buddy Maurice. Les G writes to me: Hello Patrick,

I stumbled across your blog as I was searching for some information on Maurice Marable. Upon seeing your picture I realized that you and I had actually met years ago. Before I go further let me introduce myself. My name is Leslie Graham or Les for short. Maurice and myself were friends and roommates while we were in the Air force stationed in Oklahoma. We also hung out a little in Atlanta upon leaving the service. You and I met during Maurice’s filming of one of his student projects. Realizing that I was in the company of some soon to be great talent I took a few still shots that I still have to this day…”

MOFILM1.jpgOf course, I couldn’t resist asking Les to send them to me. MOFILM2.jpgAnd here goes. I starred in a few of Maurice’s student films as he studied at Georgia State University ( www.gsu.edu/ ). MOFILM3.jpgSince that time, Maurice has gone on to do amazing work as a writer/producer/director at HBO (for many of its big shows). MOFILM4.jpgCurrently, he is the director and producer of a high-profile campaign that Coca-Cola ( www.coca-cola.com/ ) has launched for Black History month (He’s featured in it too).MOFILM5.jpg The ad, entitled “What Do You See?”, is just one element in a comprehensive African-American plan for 2008 that focuses on connecting with African-American consumers. It features three African Americans – including Maurice –

who are writing modern African-American history through their accomplishments. The other two are professional skateboarder Kareem Campbell and businesswoman and founder of Carol’s Daughter skin care Lisa Price ( www.carolsdaughter.com/ ). They all appear in “my” Maurice’s commercial asking the question: "What do you see when you look at me?" The "What Do you See?" television commercial will be accompanied by radio advertisements that will air during Black History Month in six markets including Atlanta, Birmingham, Philadelphia, Detroit, Houston and Memphis. (I’M SO PROUD OF MAURICE!!!!).MOFILM6.jpg The Company will continue its sponsorship of “African American Lives” with this year’s special, “African American Lives 2”, airing on PBS stations on February 6 and February 13 ( www.pbs.org/aalives ). The special profiles 11 notable African Americans by using genealogy, oral history, family stories, and DNA science to trace their roots. Tina Turner, Chris Rock, and a host of others are on the docket this go around.MAURICEJOICELYNPATRICK1.jpg

Ant and I want our roots traced – “African American LIVES”-style (so we can find out where exactly we hail from in Africa). We recently got the chance to celebrate the LIFE of another friend, Jamar, who may want to use this technology to piece his interesting story (which I’ll share another day).JAMARPARTY3.jpg You recall, Jamar is my buddy and personal shopper/stylist at “N” – my favorite boutique ( www.nharlemnewyork.com/ ). We always have a great time, but as we celebrated his birthday at “Harlem Lanes” ( www.harlemlanes.com/ ), it was a funky good time! JAMARPARTY1.jpgErn and Ant came ahead of me with their bowling averages...ERNANT.jpg but I did master some impressive, spot strikes throughout my game, which just came in a few points under Ant (and Ern for that matter. He’s seen a better game).JAMARPARTY6.jpg My buddy Ryan, who is always an enthusiastic spirit, came to support. JAMARPATRYAN.jpgAnd our loving Tasha and Q represented as always. JAMARPARTY7.jpgOf course, all of Harlem and “N” was there. RAFAELANT.jpgMy Earth Angel/buddy Rafael, the French artist, came by to hang out for a bit (www.rafaeldezayas.com). PATRAFAEL.jpg

On this journey, there are so many who continue to inspire me with their words, but most importantly, with who they are.

  1. I met publicist/social activist/author Terrie Williams (www.terriewilliams.com) in the mid-‘90s as she was in Atlanta promoting her debut book "The Personal Touch: What You Really Need to Succeed in Today's Fast-Paced Business World" ( www.terriewilliams.com/ptouch/about.html ). This book changed my life and informed – in large part – how I’ve come to network and navigate within this industry.terrie-bio-pic.jpg She’s published a couple of inspiring books for adults and teens between that first book and her current tome "Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We're Not Hurting” (Scribner), a wake-up call to Black folks on depression. March 18 is a day to mark on your calendar as she will be hosting a “Day of Healing” at The Apollo ( www.apollotheater.com ). Actresses Mo’Nique and now-Oscar-nominee Ruby Dee are scheduled to participate along with “Good Times”-own John Amos. They will all join together and artfully read stories of people in the book. For more information, go to: www.thestaystrongfoundation.org. Terrie recently sent me a note: “…your blog is so live –one feels your energy.” What a compliment! Thanks Terrie! And keep me posted on all you are doing around this effort as my own emotional well-being is a piece to which I stay mindful because I am aware that mental health still carries a stigma in our community. And if I scar on my body, I get treatment for it. It should be the same for our insides. And for me, it is.
  1. My girl Candi with whom I’ve been friends since our days as students in the National Association of Black Journalists (www.nabj.org) is doing some amazing things all around this industry, but one thing I can talk about: “It's Hip Hop, Baby!” - a children's DVD for ages 2 to 6 (which I’ve referenced before here in the BLOG).Picture_027.jpg But as news goes, “… it was a big hit with many celebrities at the "Boom Boom Room” at The Golden Globes pre-awards show swag suite, at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Picture_028.jpgCelebrities like Angela Bassett, Tori Spelling, and other Hollywood Parents with their kids, babies and their families smiled when they received the new educational dance DVD. Picture_029.jpgIt’s Hip Hop, Baby! was one of the hottest products for little ones of celebrities thanks, to Erin Gutierrez President/Founder of http://cottonseedclothing.com/ who is also a big fan of “It’s Hip Hop, Baby!” Picture_030.jpgThis educational DVD that features child-friendly dance routines that help your child develop listening skills and the ability to follow simple directions. Your toddler will experience the joys of learning their ABC's, animals, body parts, and numbers through fun-filled musical performances and interviews with the hip hop kids. It's Hip Hop, Baby! the DVD and CD are available at http://www.itshiphopbaby.com/ or http://www.amazon.com/.” Picture_031.jpg
  1. And Miss Yolanda Young – writer/columnist extraordinaire who I met through Candi (Years ago) came to town for business… but I’d say she came to inspire me. young_200.jpgWe broke bread at my favorite spot “ Houston ’s” ( www.hillstone.com/ ). She was such a breath of fresh air as she validated all that I am aiming to do with my career not because of what she’s doing (and she’s doing amazing things. Check out her video blog on www.yolandayoung.com ), but because of her uninhibited courage with moving forward and making things happen. On this day, I realized that I was “inside my story” and she continued to reinforce “possibilities” at a time when I needed to hear it. Yolanda, too, says that – despite my “blahs” that day – that I “convicted” her on several fronts and breakdowns in her own life. So, our chat that day meant more than networking. It was bonding and real connection. For that, Yolanda, I say THANKS!
  1. I have spoken about my Listening Experience group that my best friend from Morehouse Eddie put together some years ago. eddiedancing.jpgWe’d annually gather and share our latest and favorite music finds. listening2.jpgOne of our members Nyasha reached out with the following that I want to share with all of you. Nyasha wrote:

LE Alums! :)

I hope that your 2008 has begun exceedingly well!! A dear friend of mine out of Philly has launched a virtual music community (somewhat like myspace, but specifically geared toward music lovers and progressive folk. I have been working on my page, posting to it my songs, videos, images, and things that bring me joy. I invite you each to take a look and join the community…The site is: www.soulgen.com . In love and music, Nyasha listening1.jpg

In closing, on December 1, 2005 , Anthony and I met. PATDAMBROSE.jpgYou’ve all heard the story before. It was at the opening night of Broadway’s “The Color Purple”. SABRINAANT.jpgHe was covering it for STARZ, his Denver-based employer at the time. I was covering it as well. We were introduced at the after-party and the rest is history (or our present) as not one day has passed that we haven’t been in contact (whether I was out of the country on assignment or he was away on a family vacation in The Bahamas). Since we started out long-distance, we made monthly commitments to see each other and not one month passed without us honoring that. Then, last March, he moved here and we began the next, on-going chapter of our life and love (inside of huge adjustments, breakdowns, and challenges) – some of which has been chronicled here in the edited “A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities”. Well, last week, the producers of THE COLOR PURPLE ( www.colorpurple.com/ ) announced that the show will play its final performance on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at 7:30pm , after playing 30 preview performances and 910 regular performances at the Broadway Theatre. Now in its third year on Broadway, THE COLOR PURPLE recouped its entire $11 million investment in its first year on Broadway, having grossed over $103,000,000. And after that opening night, Ant and I would hold "The Color Purple" close as our muse for love. Because Tony-award-winning LaChanze (who created "Celie") is a friend, I got the chance to share in the celebration on the night she won the prized Broadway nod. LACHANZEPLR.jpgAnt and I even went to see “The Color Purple” again together with Fantasia (for his birthday in 2007). antpatcolorpurple.jpgAdditionally, we got to check it out on the eve of its closing announcement with new stars Chaka Khan, BeBe Winans, and Lakisha Jones (of “American Idol” fame). And we’re still together. Though “The Color Purple” wraps later this month, Anthony’s and my show goes on…:

LIKE A BLADE OF CORN,
LIKE A HONEYBEE,
LIKE A WATERFALL,
ALL A PART OF ME.
LIKE THE COLOR PURPLE,
WHERE DO IT COME FROM?
OPEN UP YOUR EYES,
LOOK WHAT GOD HAS DONE!!!! PATANTKLS1.jpg
