A DAY IN "THE LIFE OF RILEY"

I expanded on my FACEBOOK status’ from the last week to outline this blog entry!

* Had to leave NYC/NJ again [:-(] This time: Tampa for the National Association of Black Journalists' convention. [:-)] I hosted an event for Disney; co-produced a banquet with Morehouse brother Michael K. Watts (coupled with the most-able assistance from our Spelman sister, NABJ intern Janelle Richards and her fellow interns Priska, Royce, etc. were great too); sat on a couple of panels; and moderated a Q&A w/Chris Rock & Nia Long after screening of "Good Hair" documentary.

* Back in from late meeting and meal (Bennigan's) with 'industry sister' Katti and 'NABJ buddies' Mashaun & Warren. Great to catch up! Early call time tomorrow (7:45 am) and long-day workshop on freelancing (I'm a panelist) - including my Atlanta University Center brother Mario Page who went to Clark while I was at Morehouse (but also at Clark via its Mass Communications Department). He's an awesome Director/Photographer/Producer out of Atlanta.

* Early to rise here in Tampa. Speaking on a day-long panel regarding 'freelance - the good, the bad, the ugly... and tips to survive a career category I've known for years (by choice), but now one that many of my full-time colleagues (and former full-time colleagues) must consider to survive. A challenging time indeed. But there's hope!

* Half-way through freelance panel... and one of our registrants came up to me and said my testimonial was worth all the money he DIDN'T HAVE to come to the convention. I guess that's why I do what I do and share what I share.

* The NABJ LEARNING LAB: The Business of Freelancing panel on which I served is done. I think my mentoring and candor made a difference. Now it's time for the opening reception. ALREADY, it's GREAT to see everybody including my Atlanta peeps…. My fellow NABJ babies with whom I co-anchored the student newscast in 1991. Now, we're all doing our thing via the 'seasoned journalist' track - YIKES! There was my actual co-anchor Val who is a lead anchor her own in Baton Rouge. And my Dominique who has made the airwaves sparkle with her reports and hosting. Now, she is an image maker herself. Also, my former WCLK folks – including Sheila Tenney… My new Bay Area buddies Kim and Marcus… My mentor Sheila Brooks in Troy Artis – stylist/journalist extraordinaire who did stunning looks for Madame Brooks (www.insidethetents.com).

* Wrapping up a long DAY ONE at NABJ. After opening reception, there was a white party poolside that was cool (Fortunately Ant packed some white I could put on! He's awesome, right?). Meanwhile, I'm popping up to President's suite for nightcap as tomorrow is a NEW DAY: on homophobia panel & hosting Disney event.

* Saw Johnny Wright who does Michelle Obama’s hair. He was heading up a panel on TV Images and hair. I met Johnny Wright when he lived in Chicago where I was in town and our mutual friend "Chicago Carl Howard" (I call him) introduced us. At that time (a couple of years ago), he mentioned he was moving out west. Now, to know that he's moved back east (but to D.C.) and is now our First Lady's hairstylist, is awesome. Also, that he's poised to begin filming his reality show about the transition to D.C. (for BRAVO) is another cool tid-bit.

* So in addition to having NABJ A&E Task Force member Adrienne Samuels on a plenary that explored if “New Media” (a la TMZ) is the new frontier of credible journalism given it scooped CNN (and many other traditional outlets) in breaking the passing of Michael Jackson. The producer of the panel (Michael’s and my mentor Sidmel Estes) extended an invitation for the NABJ A&E Task Force to set in a priority slot with the first question.Michael K. Watts was our "designated hitter" who went up to bat on behalf of the NABJ A&E Task Force. Afterwards, Michael and I celebrated at nearby Jackson's Restaurant.

* The homophobia panel went well. Real talk all around. My colleagues, friends, and fellow NABJ LGBT Task Force members Kai Wright (moderator); Katina Parker; GLAAD’s Rashad Robinson; and I felt blessed to be able to have a platform to explore where African Americans are inside of our acceptance of gay people.

* I hosted Disney event in which my Broadway buddy Anika Noni Rose performed. I also got the chance to introduce the first African American animation lead princess in a Disney flick: Tiana. Also, via SKYPE, I chatted up Steve Harvey about the Disney Dreamers Academy. And got some behind-the-scenes scoop on The American Idol Experience & Hall of Presidents. Great show followed by GREAT after party! Getting in bed. Early call tomorrow to produce banquet.

* Just co-produced NABJ Hall of Fame Banquet here in Tampa. MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall hosted for us – wearing a classic, sleeveless Donna Karan dress and Christian Louboutin slingbacks. President Obama's chief adviser Valerie Jarrett spoke. Former EBONY managing editor Lynn Norment was one of four inducted. GREAT EVENT

* Just had great bite with NABJ aces Greg & Gil. Went to Columbia Spanish Restaurant in Tampa (on Gil!). Tomorrow I interview Chris Rock & Nia Long after they screen his doc "Good Hair" for NABJ. Then off to LA bright & early Sun. Will likely bite bullet & pay for extended stay & rental.

* Still in Tampa. Great day! Interviewed Chris Rock & Nia Long (twice) after back-to-back screenings of "Good Hair". Went very well! Just came from Salute to Excellence Awards where a MLK special on which I contributed WON! Now, party time til my early morning flight for L.A.

* Well, I've landed in L.A. Biting the bullet with extended stay & car rental. Trust all to work out. Will pick up work on project tomorrow. In the wake of an exhausting and successful NABJ in Tampa, I may see a couple of friends tonight for dinner & drinks. Easy and breezy.

* Got to hang out with L.A. friend Javier yesterday (pool party at Shangri-La in Santa Monica). I met Javier through my dear NABJ friend Brian Henderson (www.brimmage.com). Brian has been awesome in trying to help me figure out my L.A. situation a la housing/transportation/friends, etc. He’s also an amazing web designer. And we’ve become fast friends who networked hard and played hard while in Tampa. He truly shows up and I’m grateful to him. Javier, too, is a chip off of his old college buddy Brian’s block – so I too am appreciative to him for his hospitality as he manages a blossoming career as a model/actor. Javier and I hooked up with my buddy, NYC-based Theo, for some social time.

* BLESSED and working through my time away from Ant here in L.A., though he plans to come and see me Labor Day Weekend. Meanwhile, I will keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. In this picture, however, they are in the air.

I write this entry from 17E -  a Continental Airlines, coach MIDDLE seat that positions me uncomfortably between two nice gentlemen – one of whom (the winner of the window seat) is accompanied by – GASP! – his dog. The pooch, considered carry-on for these purposes, is quiet as a mouse and just sits beneath the seat that’s in front of his owner. I wouldn’t have been reminded he was there (no smell or anything) but I just reached for my bag and laptop. Nothing against God’s four-legged ‘best friend’, but on a commercial flight? And yet I am GRATEFUL to one of my life coaches and friends Curtis for making it possible for me to be on this flight and the one that’s poised to get me to L.A. for two months and the one that’s poised to get me back home after my assignment wraps in L.A. come October. Also, after waiting in Atlanta’s airport for TEN hours last week to get home (based on lightning storms in New York), I too am HAPPY that the plane is moving in the air and on schedule. HEY CUTE LITTLE DOGGIE! NO COMPLAINTS FROM ME! LOL!

Well, here marks MY REALITY of late – chockfull of anecdotal craziness yet somehow I keep it moving. I am generally in a good mood as I head to Tampa for the National Association of Black Journalists convention (www.nabj.org)… and you know this is my annual therapy (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/29/like-i-never-left.html). Always a good time!!!! (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/8/13/audacity-of-hope-and-dreams-in-vegas.html). Hey! It’s where I met President Obama two years ago. And NABJ is where I interviewed Jennifer Hudson (just a couple of months before “Dreamgirls” would change her life forever!). I Chair the NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force. I am co-producing the NABJ Hall of Fame Banquet with my friend Michael K. Watts. I am hosting “NABJ Presents…” – a franchise I’ve anchored before with sponsor Walt Disney (www.disney.go.com). A couple of years ago, Steve Harvey was one of the special guests among others. This year, NABJ will greet ‘the first African American animated lead’ Anika Noni-Rose who brings Tiana to life in “The Frog Princess” (www.disney.go.com/disneypictures/princessandthefrog/). There are other surprises on tap for this well-produced event. And I am also sitting on a couple of panels – one about ‘freelancing’ (and what it takes to survive). The other is about ‘Gays in the Media’ (I have a month to ask you if you saw my photo in “OUT” Magazine – www.out.com - LOL! - http://www.out.com/detail.asp?id=25657).

I wish Ant could be here but his current project “The Wendy Williams Show” requires he be in the studio as that show pops out LIVE everyday (But he promises he’ll make it his business to come and see me in L.A. – hopefully an extended Labor Day weekend.).

Given I just got back home to New York City/New Jersey from my five weeks in Atlanta, it is a bit difficult to be leaving home (and Ant) yet again. But of course, duty calls towards keeping the revenue streaming. Of course, with the theme of my business for the last few months being “reality TV”, I too realize how important it is not to lose my own “quite lovely” reality as I chronicle other peoples’ reality with a fine-tooth comb and a microscope (all for entertainment and a living). On top of that, there are many things within MY reality that I want to work on and manage (home improvements, a vacation, blog upgrade, book deal, etc.) and same for Ant. He and I have our eye on ‘the balancing act’ – so we can multi-task these many goals alongside those relatable pieces that continue to pay our bills.

Perhaps I’m feeling encouraged and optimistic because of how Ant and I spent our small window of time together. Of course, our social calendar can be a beast to manage. But we made sure to make us the priority in anything to which we committed. So, if it was too stressful to commute or if it wasn’t so necessary that we go, we didn’t. Of course, there were a number of things we wanted to do around the house i.e. replace air conditioning; fix bulb in kitchen; organize clothes and closets; etc. But we were not going to spend our limp four days together doing that. Still, Ant sacrificed some sleep to pack my bags and ensure that I had everything I needed for this long trip. With that, we still had lots of time to chill and connect (despite his long, working days on Thursday and Friday), and – believe it or not – there was STILL lots of time for us to socialize.

One of our stay-in treats was “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” (www.bravotv.com) which roared onto the airwaves as a record 2.7 million viewers tuned in to make it the highest-rated debut in the overall franchise (any city). I’m not quite at the part within this season where I can share a slight tid-bit here or there on my attendance at a couple of the events that took place during the filming. Still, I can talk about how – in “my reality” – I had a lovely dinner in New York City at Harlem’s “Amy Ruth” (www.amyruthsharlem.com) with NeNe’s ‘House’-husband Dwight Eubanks (www.purpledoorsalon.com) who – as I’ve mentioned before – is a friend of my friends Carl Nelson and Lamoh Hicks. Since my time in Atlanta (and his wonderful hospitality), we’re warming to friendship status ourselves. Ant also got to meet Dwight and Lamoh – two ‘earth angels’ during my lonely stint down South. Later, we all gathered at “No Parking” (www.noparkingbar.com) in Washington Heights to ensure the boys got a proper welcome to New York City where they are working on some things I’ll be sure to report when I can.

This lovely night came on the heels of an awesome day that started in bed from which neither Ant nor I could part but soon thereafter we hooked up with our girl Dawn who manages and coordinates production units with many of the hit shows that film here in New York City. Additionally she is an actress and working on an ensemble piece that’s running at The Fringe later this month (www.fringenyc.com). The director of that upcoming project and Dawn's friend Ericka joined us at Kif (www.kifbrooklyn.com) - a Moroccan restaurant on “Restaurant Row” along Dekalb in Clinton Hills/Fort Greene area of Brooklyn. Ant also budgeted his wages to take me shopping – so I could accent my ‘couture’ with some new pieces. I’m fortunate to have lots of clothes but haven’t been able to justify ‘new buys’ inside our economics. But as they improve, Ant wanted to support me – as my man and my stylist – to gift myself (in addition to everything else we’re doing to stay afloat and catch up on our arrears). Some cute shops in Chelsea did the trick (at their expense. Several of these stores are closing!). But my obligatory roll through Moshood (www.afrikanspirit.com) ensured my convention will be blessed as he, Kunle, and the gang always ensure I walk out with something that doesn’t break the bank but will turn a head or million. Ant and I also got the chance to see our favorite couple Mara Schiavocampo and her husband Tommy who invited us by for tea and dessert. Like my “earth angels” Dwight and Lamoh, Mara and Tommy take care of Ant when I’m away which always makes me feel good. And I couldn’t leave town without seeing Ant’s “Amazing Grace” – best girlfriend Manivone. We went to his sometimes-bartending spot “Velvet Cigar Lounge” to say HI to her.

On the night prior to this day-long marathon, Ant and I drove out to New Rochelle, the stomping ground of my “Amazing Grace” Nichole who had in-town visitors Tori, her sister, and Daylen, her niece – both of whom are always a joy to be around. In the wake of our five-month blitz in Atlanta, Nichole and I were due a bit more of a reprieve from each other. But enough time had passed (two days) that I felt fine to see her (and her trusty lip gloss) again. SMILE!Plus, her girlfriend Cynthia who has become our girlfriend was celebrating her birthday at the beautiful home of another of their friends Michelle (and her husband Nelson). I’ve blogged about THE NEW ROs (I call them) many times. In fact, I joke (kinda’) that the next “REAL HOUSEWIVES…” could be culled from this group. Ant and I love to hang out with this group as their homes are lovely; their hospitality is awesome; and their easy-going way and care-free nature are totally embraced. Plus, they are always working on great projects. Michelle is a former recording industry marketing exec who is now wife and mother (to baby boy) alongside being interior designer (www.simplicitydesigns.org) and artist manager. Cynthia – in addition to her pursuits and accomplishment (just got a Masters) in social work – is the artist and has an Obama-inspired show (5 pieces) running in The State Building (in Harlem) as we speak (www.profoundaudacity.org). Then, nearby neighbor and girlfriend Chenoa (who attended Cynthia’s set with her husband Carlyle) is now a photographer. But my fellow Scorpion sister is always reinventing (www.chenoamaxwell.com). She too is an actress – perhaps most notably seen as “Lena” – the interim love of Darnell, Maya’s ‘husband’ on “Girlfriends”.

Later that night, Ant and I stumbled into “G” (www.glounge.com) – a place we hadn’t been together since I lost my camera there last August. We went to say HI to his buddy Aaron who I got to see while in Atlanta (at a house party). I also ran into my friend Clarence Haynes who I’ve blogged about before (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/8/5/movin-on-up-to-the-east-side.html). He’s been supportive to me and my book –project-on-the-market “Big Willies & Amazing Graces: gay men and their best girlfriends” which almost got sold to the publishing house for which he used to work (www.modelmayhem.com/clarencito or www.nycastings.com/clarencito). He transitioned from working as an editor at a world-renowned book publishing company to pursue modeling and acting. He’s been quite busy over the past few months – including an appearance as model in one of the last episodes of UGLY BETTY from last season (www.abc.go.com/primetime/uglybetty/index). He’s the silver man with cape behind singer Adele. Also, was a makeover model on THE MORNING SHOW with Mike and Juliet in May. And Clarence says his big epiphany of late is refocusing on his love of exploration of culture, race, gender and sexuality, both in publishing and performance. And that translates into him doing developmental work on a performance collective that will have dancers, singers, visual artists exploring issues around gender and sexuality – perhaps a backdrop for my sidelight of performing and presentation. And he hasn’t left the written word behind as proven by a piece he just recently wrote on E. Lynn Harris' literary legacy at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/clarence-haynes/what-lies-below-taking-ti_b_248197.html.

And of course, we couldn’t be in NEW YORK CITY for a week without getting a DIVA in. Well, more than one if you count our recently wed Tawana (Tata, I call her). She and I are near and dear, but Ant and I didn’t get the chance to join her in St. Lucia as she married her love Jules. But classic Tata showed up as if she was left to give a gift (always giving, she is) when she called to remind me that we have been long-scheduled to see Jody Watley (www.jodywatley.net) at B.B. King’s (www.bbkingblues.com). Jody was in great voice and in a great mood to vogue and even lay out on the floor for the “KIDS”.  My Morehouse brother Michael K. Watts who does “LIVE FROM FRONT ROW!” (music and concert reviews) noted that the 80s triple threat channeled her Soul Train beginnings as well as her mentors from the most legendary of house music vogueing dancers.  Michael even provided a rundown of the awesome show! THANKS MICHAEL!

GRACE JONES was also in town. But I didn’t realize. I knew she was going to be at The Hollywood Bowl but didn’t know that there was a New York City date as well. I hear she was FAB! As Jody stands on Grace Jones’ shoulders, perhaps Grace – and Jody  - are standing on the shoulders of Naomi Sims who recently passed away. As one of the first Black models of note in America (if not the first), Naomi Sims opened the door for Beverly Johnson, Iman, Naomi, Tyra, and all the supermodels to catwalk through. I had the luxury of interviewing Naomi Sims a few years back in Santa Barbara. A total honor!!!!

And after a final day of prepping for this trip (including working the phones --- unsuccessfully at this writing --- towards finding a free/cheap-yet-comfy place to stay for my two months in L.A.), Ant and I got to spend ceremonious time with Ern at “On The Border”. It was sort of a last supper before I leave and before they both come to L.A. at some point – over the next month – to ensure I don’t slip through the cracks of someone else’s reality… and know that my own reality is worth maintaining and managing and nurturing. DEAL, GUYS? 

P.S. Congrats to my cousin Kea who is going to be a Navy sailor. Though I was in Georgia a couple of days before her send-off, I had to get back to NYC to regroup for my trip that has me back south (even further... in Tampa). Here are all of us YOUNG COUSINS with Kea and - at-the-time - her pregnant sister. This was just a couple of years ago. Now, Kea is taking it to the next level. TRAVELING MERCIES... and ALL MY LOVE, CUZ!

I met Sandra Lee one night at a NYC cocktail party hosted by a friend.On this night, Sandra asked me to come visit her photo shoot for OUT Magazine the following day as I knew her publicist Audra. Upon my arrival to the photo studio, she asked if I'd join the shoot as she had - since the night prior - been going goo-goo and ga-ga over my ---- get this ---- cheekbones. Suddenly, I was being whisked away from the kraft service table into wardrobe, hair, and makeup. QUITE THE RUSH! Another highlight from the last couple of weeks was being able to do a few days of business back in New York City (as I’ve been holed up in Atlanta on a project featuring singer Monica).I can’t detail all the goings on but you’ll be able to see it yourself come October on BET. The best part is I got the chance to see Ant as we were put up at The Hudson Hotel (www.hudsonhotel.com) - a stone’s throw from his day work on “The Wendy Williams Show” (www.wendyshow.com).I got the chance to introduce Ant to Monica. And we got the chance to introduce to Monica my nephew Noot, who has been the Grammy-award-winning diva’s #1 fan for many years.In addition to a reality show, Monica has a new CD coming out… and I trust it to be a big hit for her. Though work, great to share it with my guys.In between our long-in-the-tooth shooting days, Ant and I got to hang out a little – including some time at my old stomping ground for ‘intimate evenings of song’ The Duplex (http://216.117.188.141/rileyshowforkodjoe.wmv). My “Broadway baby love” Ken Roberson performed The Wiz’s “If You Believe” and Pippin’s “Magic To Do” for the spirited crowd. We also got to hang out with our friends at spots like “Nowhere” and “Splash”.But we had a blast hanging in Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn (www.fortgreenepark.org) with Ant’s Denver buddies Manivone, Chris, Reggie, and many others.On this night, we enjoyed a taste of Greek cuisine at a neighborhood spot (juxtaposed to now-old-hat-soul-food–since–in-Atlanta from Amy Ruth --- www.amyruthsharlem.com) and we even got a little karaoke in at our favorite spot One 7 (www.karaoke17.com). While in NYC working, I got access to Whitney Houston’s listening party. However, scheduling didn’t allow me to attend.Still, New York City provided me lots of pleasure – including a quick visit with my Detroit buddy Greg Dunmore with whom I spent lots of quality time on my last leg of L.A. I have been working alongside Monica for the last month and change (not to mention the chance to work with some of the best and most kind folks in the business).And on top of that, there have been some additional, personal highlights to my time here.I was excited to get the chance to warm up for an exclusive performance she recently did at my Morehouse brother Christian Ruffin’s place “The View” (www.TheViewatKingPlow.com).His One Stop Productions company (www.OneStopProduction.com) managed the sound, lighting, staging, etc. for the affair. Though in place as a stretching mechanism for Monica’s fab costume changes, it was good to be on the stage and to be given an opportunity to let my personality shine through.I sang too! Lots of fun.Plus, I got to invite some dear friends out – including my homegirl from Savannah (READ: elementary school) Tonja (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/26/its-good-to-be-black.html).She brought her husband Andrew who is managing a music group 430 that is creating quite the buzz on the charts and on the road as they prepare to tour stateside and internationally (www.myspace.com/4thirty). Tonja also proved herself quite the “A Day in the Life of Riley” correspondent as she also took this pic at our high school classmate Anthony David’s recent Atlanta set that I couldn’t attend due to scheduling (www.anthonydavidmusic.com/).Also, my girl Elise – Media Relations Manager at Morehouse (www.morehouse.edu) - came and enjoyed the show along with Morehouse brother Jabez Shakur (www.marooninstitute.com). And amidst our preps for this project, Monica’s makeup artistChristian – also a friend of my L.A. buddies Scott and Tony – and I got to enjoy some lovely meals at two ATL hot spots: “Geisha House” (www.dolcegroup.com) and “Two Urban Licks” (www.twourbanlicks.com).He's been an awesome host to me - and not always as over as the accompanying picture, but always cute, fly, and so cool!

I also got some quality time with family and friends. My brother Herman, sister Janice, and I got the chance to spend some quality sibling time together. Of course, we did one of our favorite things to do: EAT. First, Houston’s (www.hillstone.com). Then, Busy Bee (for banana pudding): www.thebusybeecafe.com. Also, we got the chance to memorialize Michael Jackson (as a family) since he was such a part of our growing up.We met him on Norton Air Force Base in San Bernadino, CA at an airplane expo: The Thunderbirds. Also, we shared an audience with him at Magic Mountain for a Sylvers Concert.Then, there are the Jacksons/solo shows we've attended in addition to one moment in Atlanta when I got to meet him at The Omni for a charity benefit at which he made an appearance with TLC. Oh! And I attended that pre-9/11 30th Anniversary concert in September of 2001.We played Michael all day and night long which brought a bit of closure to The King of Pop’s passing (I wondered why I hadn’t quite gotten over it yet. Always good to see my peeps.And Morehouse brother Michael K. Watts was in town for business but made it his business to see me (in a very small window of time).He’s been doing some awesome work with his writing (as his Maxwell interview is featured in this month’s UPSCALE Magazine – www.upscalemagazine.com).But Michael is also doing some awesome work inside his longstanding brand as a collector of pop culture memorabilia. Stay tuned for more details on this special way in which Michael Jackson’s #1 fan is being a stand for the great entertainer’s legacy.

And there was lots of fun to be had at Midown Tavern (www.midtowntavern.net) where our friend Anthony Hill, head writer for Tyler Perry’s “Meet The Browns” (www.tbs.com/shows/meetthebrowns) invited us to karaoke.I experimented on Diana’s “Waiting in the Wings” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAVA6kBZ73Q). Anthony and I did The Spinners “Games People Play” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=5znh58WITU8). I got a showstopper in: Mariah Carey’s “Can’t Let Go” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLkwbUPfk3g).And SWV’s LeLee (my colleague Shareen’s buddy) was in the house. Shareen introduced us on our last stint in Atlanta.

Time flies when you’re having fun and – in my case – when you’re enjoying life with the one you love. Ant and I have made the most of my time here at home. But now, I’ve got to get back on the road. I’m heading to L.A. for a couple of weeks followed by another month in Atlanta. Then, I return to L.A. for a month. As an independent producer/personality/writer in a recession, it’s good to have booked work when many of my clients have cutback and/or are on summer hiatus. Also, it’s good that this work will be seen by the world come Fall (at which time I will talk a bit more about it). Of course, I'll be missing Ant in the meantime. But duty calls...

Miss Ross was in town. Tony-Award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, my diva joined Covenant House President Kevin Ryan on stage in New York City to offer her support after homeless youth being helped by Covenant House (www.covenanthouse.org) performed the show-stopping song “One Day at a Time”. The benefit raised funds to provide food, shelter, clothing, educational opportunities, job training and counseling for homeless teens. Ms. Ross called Covenant House a builder of bridges and a place of shelter and hope for children in need. Kevin Ryan noted that Miss Ross has spent time with these kids on more than one occasion. The Greenhouse (www.greenhouseusa.com) was the backdrop. Makeup artist extraordinaire Sam Fine (www.samfine.com), who has a new DVD coming out, and stylist Deb Medeiros made it possible for Ant, Ern, and me to attend. Miss Williams looks stunning - every bit 25 and was in great voice as she performed the sultry, sexy music of her new project “The Real Thing” (www.VanessaWilliams.com) and (www.ConcordMusicGroup.com

The last couple of weeks have been chockfull of fun:

While Ant’s frat brother Chris was in town, we did a lot. We hung out with my Morehouse brother Michael Bryant who was hosting Shahid and Eugene – friends of his from South Africa. I’d met Shahid in 2004 and we had a great time – from restaurants to clubs. He wanted an encore presentation. However, we had to settle on some cocktails at legendary Lenox Lounge. Afterwards, we went to a couple of spots in the Village including “Urge” which is next to DTOX where my friend Randall is now giving a Sunday night set “Relapse”.

The next night, Chris had to hook up with some friends. Ant and I decided to go by the Port Authority bowling alley for a drink before hooking up with our friend Carl to go to Mara Schiavocampo’s buddy David Fuente’s rooftop apartment for a lovely night of champagne and the stars. Afterwards, Carl, Ant, and I went to The Secret for its Saturday night party. After that, we went to No Parking before calling it a night. Always bumping into folks there.

On another night, Chris, Ant, Carl, and I went to see “RAW: No More Secrets, No More Lies”. Though we were there to see my buddy Demarco Majors, he was out of town. Still, we enjoyed the show comprised of ‘full frontal nudity’. Actors’ Playhouse (www.nyactorsplayhouse.com) – now co-owned by Lawrence Page – is now opening its doors to cutting edge theatrical fare like “RAW”. I got the chance to pose with Mr. Page and some of the cast. Afterwards, Ant, Chris, and I went to a White Party thrown at HK Lounge (www.hkhellskitchen.com) by Khary and Ray (www.myspace.com/nightlifenyc). My Chicago Carl’s good friend Pierre (and others) were in town from Chicago and I got to introduce them to my friends Seitu and Toyce. We all had a great time.

On Sunday night, Ant continued his new tradition of bartending at Velvet Cigar Lounge in Williamsburgh alongside promoting a MUSE. PRINCE was the artist of the night, compliments of D.J. Stereotype.

And burlesque dancer Black Betty popped by. She may be doing some sets at Velvet down the line. Lots of our friends came out on this night. The following week, his MUSE STEVIE WONDER knocked everybody’s socks off. And the crowd built to a vibrant roar by STEVIE’s week. New friend Tetiana Anderson (my co-host from “Drums Along The Hudson”) came out.

On Memorial Day, Ant and I spent time with our favorite couple Mara and Tommy for comfort food and good TV (Plus, we played with their babies - two dogs and a cat). It's also been great to just casually hang out and bump into friends - like Mario and Melvin. They are both always so supportive and uplifting. As we each sometimes go through our challenges, the others are always there to support in whatever way they can. I love having my friends around and in my life - like family. Comforting. While having a bite at Dallas BBQ one day, I stumbled into Manivone and Chris. Also, my good friend Earline Franklin was in town. When in town, she stays at the Trump on Central Park West. And singer Ashanti has been announced as Dorothy. I hope I get to steal a moment to see it (www.citycenter.org/). Not exactly Broadway, but Ant and I wanted to be sure to support our friend Reggie Barnes in the play “Eulogy For The Blackman” – described as a wild and farcical adventure about “negative” black men and the community that wants to disown and eliminate them. Jamal Williams wrote the play and Michele Baldwin directed it. CONGRATS, REGGIE! GREAT JOB!

I didn’t get a chance to see it but I stumbled into “Lackawanna Blues” writer and director Ruben Santiago Hudson whose current play “Things Of Dry Hours” is running at The New York Theatre Workshop (www.nytw.org). After Michael K. Watts and I had great and cheap meal at “Simply Pasta” (www.simplypastanyc.com), I hooked up with friends Sana and Ike for celebratory cocktails as Ike just landed a gig. Michael and I reflected on the great time we had at our National Association of Black Journalists Regional Conference a couple of days prior (www.nabj.org). As always, it was great to see everybody. Ike, meanwhile, wanted me to meet his girlfriend Cassie Freeman (www.cassiefreeman.com) – actress extraordinaire – credits including Spike Lee’s “Inside Man” and Chris Rock’s “I Think I Love My Wife”. She was hanging out with Ruben, crew, and cast – including associate director Jade King Carroll who was a joy. Delroy Lindo (who did “Crooklyn” and many other roles) – is also in the play and was hanging out last night. Cassie is such a joy and a talent. I look forward to knowing her more.

• I mentioned my friend Anthony Hill who is writing for Tyler Perry’s “Meet The Browns”. Wanted to shout out my buddy Lamman Rucker who too co-stars in the sitcom (www.tbs.com/shows/meetthebrowns). I write about comic actress Erica Watson from time to time. Well, she just wrapped “FAT BITCH” (www.vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.channel&vanity=comedian_erica_watson) and is making things happen with her branding. Go girl!

• My girlfriend Cy had a fabulous event Ant and I weren’t able to make, but I hear it was fabulous (We did get to hang out with she and the gang a day or so later). Ant and I were busy preparing for our out-of-town guest alongside a commitment that took a chunk of our day. Cy hosted a special how-to event called "High Design On A Dime: Dinner Party Essentials." It was a Victorian Punk Tea Party. She’s a lifestyle designer (www.vivedesignhaus.com) and this particular event (at Brooklynski – www.brooklynski.com) provided tips & ideas for wowing dinner party guests with even the smallest of budgets. Topics included how to create ambiance, crafty decoration ideas, and unique places to source materials.

• LIVE OUT LOUD (www.liveoutloud.org) – the LGBT youth mentoring organization and scholarship donor asked Ant and me to speak at The Brooklyn School of Social Justice for PRIDE week. We spoke last year (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/20/a-reversal-of-mendacity.html). The students had lots of questions!!!!!!! And Ant and I answered them all - from the sublime ("what did your mom say when you came out? ") to the ridiculous ("Do you two kiss? Who's the man and who's the woman?" LMAO!). But Ant and I were both impressed with the kids and their coolness about the whole subject. Even as some of their LGBT classmates sat amongst them, there were little to no issues on the homophobia tip, which truly is a sign of progress.

• While in Oakland, I had the luxury of working with a young man named Charles Handy. He came to town – managing street dancers (from Oakland and Memphis) and inspiring the production of a segment on BETs “106^th and Park” (www.bet.com/OnTV/BETShows/106andpark/). He stopped by to say HI to me while he was here.

• See my friend Lajuan with B.B. King. Not sure how he came to be an audience with this legendary B.B. However, Ant and I got the chance to enjoy another BeBe (as in Zahara Benet – Rupaul’s Drag Race winner (www.logoonline.com/shows/dyn/rupauls_drag_race/videos.jhtml). She performed at our friend Nathan Hale Williams’ event at SPLASH (www.splashnyc.com). • So, my nephew has come to stay with Ant and me for the summer. En route from Georgia, he happened to share a flight with Aunt Viv (Janet Hubert-Whitten). • HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my friend Karu who many of us got the chance to celebrate in song via karaoke spot “Second on Second” (www.2ndon2nd.com/). I sang “This Woman’s Work” and “The Boss” while Ant, our friends Kevin-Anthony, and Spelman sister/”Harlem Heights” star Bridget Bland and a host of her fellow Spelman women looked on and sang along. Ant and I were happy to be a part. Thanks to our Bridget for making sure we were in the house.

Channeling our relationship’s humble beginnings when Ant was in Denver and I was here on the East Coast… and we challenged ourselves to see each other once a month, Ant will come and spend a few days with me in L.A. before he starts his work with “The Wendy Williams Show” (www.wendywilliamstvshow.com/). And hopefully I can get a couple of quick visits into NYC to check on Ant and Noot (I MUST SEE “THE WIZ”!!!!). Otherwise, I’ll be back in August… and on the market for my WHAT’S NEXT? And since work has picked up a little, we are BLESSED to be climbing out of our economic doldrums - one step at a time. Like many, we're not out of the woods yet (and I'm filled with angst about my current fiscal snapshot - especially as I will be away from my COMFORT ZONE of home, friends, family, fetal position in my own bed, etc.), but I have a knack for breathing through it these days and talking myself off the ledge each time. I commit to continue BEING A DIFFERENCE towards ABUNDANCE! And STAYING PRAYERFUL that things will work out IN MY FAVOR someday soon! So, HOME (a la THE WIZ) will be here in NYC and I will carry my COMFORT ZONE with me on the road --- to make it through...

  I thought my blog entry would simply chronicle my month in Atlanta on an assignment – the general details of which I can share when the ‘reality show’ is ready to be seen in the Fall. I would have simply listed the musings and pop culture sightings across which I stumbled while in my ‘home away from home’ over this five-week stretch. But I’ll start with what awaited me here at home over this past few days as I did miss my partner Ant something terrible. I also missed the comforts of my home and the quality of my life. But during these economically-challenging times, it’s been critical that I be willing to sacrifice to stay connected to the industry I still hold dear and to hold onto the business that is – for now - the backdrop of my calling and living.

Though put up in lovely quarters and enjoying all the cuisine Atlanta has to offer, I was very excited to land at JFK airport the other day and be met by Ant and a roundup of ‘my favorite things’ that had been missing while I was away from home. He lined up TIVO – so we could catch up on the shows I didn’t have the time to watch. He served a tasty meal of salmon, asparagus, and fixings. We held onto each other for dear life before heading into the city for some time-sensitive errands (bills still have to be paid, etc.) and of course, some social time at SOBs (www.sobs.com). John Legend introduced his little brother Vaughn Anthony (www.john-legend.net/homeschool/) who provided a seven-song indication that he’s got the goods. Additionally, Legend performed a jam session with Estelle… Rick Ross… Ryan Leslie.  John Legend rocks!!!! Then, Ant and I did a little karaoke. (and three times since I’ve been back). The next night, his buddy Mike from Denver (an awesome vocalist in his own right) joined us for an evening. We got our karaoke in but also did some bar hopping – including our old standby “No Parking” (www.noparkingbar.com) where our friend/owner Brian Palmer showed how happy he was to see me. Derrick Briggs whose awesome performance in "Finding Me" entertained Ant and me during our reunion (www.thanks4findingme.com) as we viewed a copy provided us from the filmmaker. Also, I co-hosted an event for my dear friend Carl Nelson. “Drums Along The Hudson” (www.drumsalongthehudson.org/), which I also co-hosted last year, is in its seventh year of transforming Upper Manhattan’s Inwood Hill Park into a POW WOW PLANET. Produced by Carl, it is presented by Lotus Music & Dance in collaboration with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. It is sponsored in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and WABC-TV, including host for the first part of the day, Sandra Bookman. “Drums Along The Hudson” is a celebratory gathering of Native people and a multicultural, family-oriented mélange of world dancers and drummers. Also, Native American crafts and international cuisines were a part of the day. My co-host Tetiana Anderson (of Weather Channel fame - www.weather.com/tv/personalities/Tetiana-Anderson.html) and I introduced a diverse array of performances – from Peru, Korea, and the Mohawk tribe. Ant volunteered for the effort while many of our friends came out to support - including Lisa, Nicole, and Wilson. We also met Theressa Dubois with Equal Access Sign Language Television (www.deafwelcome.org). She gave us an insight and awareness into the US Deaflympic Team (Taipei 2009).   I also got to enjoy a quick breakfast in Hackensack, NJ. My sponsors were another of my ride-or-dies Lisa Goodnight and her man Lex. We enjoyed southern cuisine and each others' company. The crème de la crème of Ant’s welcome home fiesta was at the Velvet Cigar Lounge (www.velvetbrooklyn.com) at which he bartends a couple of nights a week. You’ll recall, his “Amazing Grace” Manivone has been working there for about a year and graciously extended an offer his way after the owner Phil needed to expand his team. Ant – ever the visionary – has come up with “SUNDAY NIGHT MUSE” – a weekly franchise that celebrates the body of work and the influence of an artist. For my WELCOME-BACK-SET, DIANA ROSS – of course – was the muse. The signature drink "Love Hangover" was made of organic, fruit-infused Grey Goose. And DJ Stereotype scored the night with 45 years of LA ROSS piping from the speakers. My “Amazing Grace” Nichole, who too was in Atlanta with me on this reality assignment, shared ‘the spotlight’ with me as this was her comeback as well. A month of sightings without my every-two-week update means I have about five weeks to playback. I won’t bore you with all the details but the pictures are worth many words. Firstly, my fellow producers (including my Nichole, Shareen, Ev, Ashley) and I stayed at THE TWELVE – Atlantic Station (www.twelvehotels.com/AtlanticStation/HotelHome.do). It was truly a home away from home with each room well-appointed like an apartment - from kitchens to pcs to whirlpool and balcony. You’ll recall, I stayed there last August when in Atlanta to host an event for the High Museum (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/26/its-good-to-be-black.html). The lobby is quite the place to see and be seen. In the course of the month, I ran into “Ron” from “A Different World” played by Darryl Bell. He was in town working on a TV ONE special. Denise Boutte who is currently co-starring in Tyler Perry’s “Meet The Browns” was having dinner there one night (www.tbs.com/meetthebrowns). She too co-starred in Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?". My friend Anthony Hill (a writer for the show) introduced me to her. The ladies and I ran into Anthony on more than one occasion in the lobby and hung out a little bit. One night, a friend of Nichole’s Michael Ferguson (former bass player for Levert and planner of music festivals – www.omnisourcevents.com), Anthony (credits also including “Eve” and “Between Brothers”), Shareen, Nichole, and I did a night on the town that included: Gladys Knight and Ron Winans’ Chicken & Waffles (www.gladysandron.net/)... Sutra Lounge (www.sutraloungeatl.com)... my favorite for organic wings and eggs R. Thomas (www.rthomasdeluxegrill.com). We popped by Justin’s (www.justinsrestaurant.com) and met Shareen’s friend Sonia who has a store “Roaring 20s” in Lithonia near its Stone Crest Mall (We went to check her out and bought a few 'looks for less'). Shareen is also friends with Lelee from SWV. So, I got a photo op with her as well. Also in Atlantic Station, we spent time at “Geisha House” (www.dolcegroup.com) and enjoyed sushi. And when we could get out, “The Flying Biscuit” (www.flyingbiscuit.com/) and “Arizona” (www.tripadvisor.com) were two restaurants that floated our digestive boats. Good food all around!!!! Now, I couldn’t be in Atlanta without sniffing out “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”. Don't we LOVE them? Well, I'm told I can't talk about it now (so I've pulled the pix and sightings off). But stay tuned pending the new season. I'll try to remember to recall my own observations once it hits the airwaves later this year. I apologize if my initial post caused any trouble.    I did get to hang out a little bit with Sister 2 Sister’s Jamie Foster Brown (www.s2smagazine.com/). She and I got to catch up as we had some business-in-common later that week. Also, Keyshia Cole’s manager Manny invited me to a set for his birthday (www.velvetatl.com). Here I pose with his brother Steve who I got to know during the month there. We worked together and had a lot of fun too.

Since Nichole and I were both homesick, we were happy to be together as we also had to travel to Oakland for a few days on our assignment. Also, we were more than happy to get our friends and family in the mix as much as we could. Nichole’s sister Tori, Shannon, and Shannon’s friend Vernecia (who works at The Carter Center) came by to see us along with another of Tori’s friends Naima. Always good to hang with the girls. Any time we could connect to ‘our folks’ was a heartwarming time. My sister Janice lives in Lithonia. The same week I came to ATL, my brother Herman was coming to stay with my sister and her husband Vincent. So, I got a few moments to hang with them (Not as many as I would have liked but my work schedule demanded much of my time). My brother’s son Noot (who is now a rising-Senior at Morehouse College en route to NYC for his 2^nd year at his HBO internship) came and saw me a couple of times (Spelman sister in tow). My Morehouse brother Welborn Preston came by with a friend Nathan (who knows my Mario who is here in NYC). My “Original Amazing Grace” Natalie got to meet my “NYC Amazing Grace” Nichole. That was a cool moment for me! SMILE! My girlfriend Kelly Welborn (formerly of High Museum. Now, Director of Marketing with Spelman College museum) came by and spent some time with me. She even had a birthday gift for Ant; Miss Cristal (with whom Ern and I spent many Thanksgivings in the Poconos) came by; my dearest Elise found me in Lenox Mall one day. Then, we had some great, ‘spirited’ times at the hotel lobby. And my Audrey – of course – came around as often as possible to lift my homesick spirits. She even joined Lamoh and me one night at late-night supper spot Pearl (www.thepearlbistro.com/thepearlbistro.asp). Afterwards, we even convinced her to join us at a spot Rain for dancing (her Taliban-esque chicness in tow). And I couldn’t be in ATL for a month without my “best friends” from New York City popping by (not so much to see me, but of course, they squeezed me into their missions). Jason and Marqice were in town. Marqice joined Jason a few days later for his birthday which falls near Ant’s birthday - so our households were represented in both places (as Jason wasn't able to attend Ant's birthday set earlier in the month). Marqice had a Queens-based fete upon their return to NYC... and Ant was able to attend that as well. So, we LOVE when we can represent for each others' birthdays. Then, THE Michael K. Watts came down for Mother’s Day to see his mom… and popped by the “12” to say HI. This, as he and I are co-producing the National Association of Black Journalists’ Hall of Fame Banquet (www.nabj.org). One night, while dining at Intercontinental Buckhead (www.InterContinental.com) for business, I was cajoled into singing with a German tourist/pianist at the bar. This, while legendary Frankie Beverly (of MAZE) looked on and later complimented me. The one thing missing was… ANT! But he sure made up for it when I returned. We’ll now be present with the time we do have together before I hit the road for a couple of months: L.A., ATLANTA, L.A., TAMPA. He’ll – for sure – get one of these destinations in for a visit, if not more, though he’s poised to start work on “The Wendy Williams Show” at the end of June (in addition to an art project on which he’s working to complete and get backing for a show).
