Some features to look forward to:
1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.
2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".
3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.
4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

"... UNTIIL I GET TO MY DESTINATION..."
Well, I’ve been working non-stop for various clients since the top of the year. The work is coming much faster than the checks. But the checks are coming… and that’s what counts, right? Since last we spoke, much has happened. But mostly good (Will be better when those checks start trickling in… and even better if I keep attracting these rounds of great assignments).
As you know, under my cap as independent producer, personality, writer, I just wrapped getting my feet wet in the skills-set-applicable reality realm as field and story producer on reality shows "Monica: Still Standing" (and prior to that, "Frankie & Neffe" - both of which shot in Atlanta and edited in L.A. throughout 2009). Well, we just found out that “Monica: Still Standing” has been nominated for the 2010 Namic Vision Award. NAMIC is the National Association of Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (www.namic.org). CONGRATS TEAM MONICA! Even after the show has wrapped, our show is BEING THE DIFFERENCE! AWESOME!
Meanwhile, on the on-camera tip, you’ve so far seen my pop culture analysis on MSNBC at the top of the year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pYKZBjEx40). And with "Princess & The Frog" having come out with a bang, this link got a lot of play (from when I recently hosted a preview event for Disney with Anika Noni-Rose in Tampa for NABJ) (http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/NABJDisneyMagic.wmv). And
I'm featured in a piece re: Ebony Fashion Fair on CUNY-TV's "Indepedent Sources" that runs later this month on Wednesday, February 24th. CUNY TV is channel 75 in New York City and runs at 8:30 PM (www.cuny.tv).
And on the freelance producing tip, the BET work on which I spent the lion’s share of January is either on the air or has already been seen by its target audience.
BET commissioned me to work on field producing/writing/editing BET's Black History Month campaign. Some samples below, but the final spots are running on BET now.

And also for BET, I did celebrity interviews back-stage for two of BET's recent events: BET HONORS (DC) and was invited to interview celebs backstage at BET's telethon for HAITI relief in Miami. I got to see Monica and Diddy again as well as interview Gloria & Emilio Estefan, Fonzworth Bentley, Common, Rickey Smiley, Chrisette Michelle, Spike Lee, Mike Tyson, Brian McKnight, and many more (www.bet.com/specials/helphaiti/). While in Miami, I got to hang out with my homeboy Maurice and my Morehouse brother Khalid. And also in the mix, all of the awesome BET folks who’ve welcomed me into the fold as family. A lot of great folks over there. We had a lovely meal at Tarpon Bend Restaurant in Coral Gables, Florida (www.tarponbend.com).
Meanwhile, my main freelance client has been calling and I’ve been churning out work there and also I recently did a project for Ed Gordon Media.
And on the writing tip, in the wake of being a contributing reporter for ESSENCE Magazine's OBAMA editorial section in the November issue, I just filed work for a new assignment that will be featured in the June 2010 issue of ESSENCE on FATHERHOOD. And The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists has invited me to sit on its panel (just before The Oscars): Monitoring Hollywood ll Precious: A Discussion On Hollywood’s Image of The Black Woman. It’s scheduled for Thursday, March 4, 2010 from 7pm to 9pm in the Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News Public Room, 400 North Broad Street. Since Philly’s own Lee Daniels’ gripping film “Precious” - based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire is winning acclaim for its tale of a young Black girl’s heartache and struggle living in the inner city, PABJ’s Media Watch Committee think it fitting to delve into the progress and failures of Hollywood’s portrayal of Black women. Just in time for Women’s History Month! www.pabjwatch.blogspot.com
AND WINTER’S COLD --- and many BLIZZARDS --- COULDN’T STOP Ant, the gang, and me from enjoying our New York City!
“CHICAGO”
From Destiny’s Child, Michelle Williams made her debut in Broadway’s “Chicago” recently. As all of her stage impressions – from “AIDA” to “The Color Purple” (as Shug Avery) – she proved a delight. AMEN’s Roz Ryan is ‘Mama’ in the cast. And these two bring some freshness to a long-in-the-tooth show on The Great White Way. My buddies Damone Roberts (‘eyebrow king’) and star hairstylist Oscar James were in the house along with Star Jones and her beau. Also, it was great to see Michelle, Kelly, and Beyonce’s label publicist (for many years) Yvette Noel-Schure. I love Yvette!!!! She made it possible for Ant to take me to Manila a couple of years ago and see in concert: Beyonce, who serenaded me Happy Birthday after her show. And since B was in Brazil (hot off snagging her record-breaking six Grammy Awards), her husband Jay Z came by the after party (at Time Hotel, just across the street from the Ambassador Theatre) to celebrate Michelle on behalf of Mrs. Carter. Also in attendance at the after-party: my friends Devon Christopher (BLEU Magazine Publisher); Ra-Fael deBlanco; and Katrina Boswell (two of my favorite publicists); and THE Karu Daniels (of AOL Black Voices fame).
“BLACK LIST 3”
I've had the chance to host THE BLACK LIST Volume One premiere in Atlanta in August 2008 at The High Museum: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/26/its-good-to-be-black.html This, in addition to attending the NYC Premiere for VOLUME ONE: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/15/masters-mentors.html ... And VOLUME TWO: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/3/4/like-march-weather-when-hell-change-nobody-knows.html Was great to experience the continuing saga VOLUME 3 in New York City with players from all three: Faye Wattleton, Lee Daniels, Latonya Richardson, Dr. Michael Lomax, Rev. Al Sharpton, and others. (www.hbo.com)
“POST BLACK”
On that same night, Ant and I joined my AUC/CAU sister Ytasha Womack who left her Windy City of Chicago to promote her new book in New York City. Hip business features magazine NV presented the “Post Black” party. And imagine my excitement when I found out that in this collection of essays on ‘how a new generation is redefining African American Identity’, Ytasha includes a memory of ME at the top of her Chapter 4 (page 82 – 83) which is titled “BLACK, GAY, LESBIAN, AND PROUD: GLBT IN BLACK AMERICA” – an excerpt in which some social time she and I spent in Chicago was perhaps tainted by a comic that – after tanking with his stand-up act – chose to go for the ‘homophobic gay joke’ to which he received even less enthusiasm from the mixed crowed. I consider the moment a development in my own comforts around sexuality because – like other moments – this one didn’t hold in my heart as a ‘traumatic’ one. But the compassion and insight of Ytasha underscores the sociological aspects of that particular moment brilliantly. CONGRATS YTASHA! Please pick up her book: www.postblackthebook.blogspot.com and http://lit.newcity.com/tag/ytosha-womack/ and http://www.booklistonline.com/default.aspx?page=show_product&pid=3968773 and http://www.wgntv.com/search/dispatcher.front?Query=ytasha+womack&target=article Several of my L.A. peeps are still staying in touch. Look out for: My Sheryl Lee Ralph’s 1st Annual DIVA AWARDS (www.divaawards.org) in L.A. on February 27th. She honors Oscar nominees Lee Daniels and Mo’Nique.
NYC FASHION WEEK
New York Fashion Week is in high gear… and Ant and I are usually in the mix. In the throes of managing multiple projects to stay afloat, I’ve neglected the many invites that have popped in my email box – usual inspiration for what I will RSVP to attend a la the white tent shows; off-sight extravaganzas; and the many ‘open bar’ parties. Though Ant too has been overwhelmed with long days – cranking out segments for ‘The Wendy Williams Show’, fashion and style are his business. So, he invited me to join him for ‘Wendy’ celebrity guest make-up artist D'Angelo Thompson's launch party in SOHO along with his partner Andrea Fairweather who I've had a chance to meet over the years when I've done on-camera pop culture analysis. Beauty Techniques To Go (www.BeautyTechniquesToGo.com) is a comprehensive DIY beauty education series for the beauty-conscious and aspiring/emerging artists. It teaches beauty techniques, trends, kit revamp, and more. Several of his ‘Wendy’ colleagues were in the house – from Aleeka to Talia… and it was the perfect start to an evening that wrapped further downtown. It was BET’s a-little-older-and-sexier cable network CENTRIC's party launching MODEL CITY – an original series that takes a look at the world of Black male models. I have several friends connected to the project – from Sean Joell Johnson and Senior VP of Original Programming Essie Chambers. In the house, I ran into several of my BET bosses and peers of late as well as some dear friends – like Toyce Francis and Nina Flowers (from The Apollo). Toyce has just launched www.ClubVIPlister.com, a national gay nightlife directory that features much for its demo to comb through around the New York City scene and beyond. I’ve bumped into her a time or two during Fashion Weeks gone by and this past couple of months (at BET Honors and BET’s Haiti Telethon), Chrisette Michelle – as always – was most gracious and sweet. I even ran into my friend Tracey Moore’s little girl Radiance – now a woman and continuing to make us proud as she delves into video producing! GO RADIANCE!
“ERN’S EXTRAVAGANZA”
February has been celebration time. It’s Ern’s birthday month (February 14th to be exact). But we didn’t start partying on that day. A couple of weeks prior, he, Ant, and I hung out with Ant’s work sister Candice at her place for a YOU TUBE party. We enjoyed The Grammys at Ern’s place. Then, to honor the BIG 28TH BIRTHDAY of ERN, we did several things. We’re still celebrating. (But I’ve known Ern since ‘his birth’ [EXHIBIT A], I’m not sure how all of this works… but since Black doesn’t crack, I’ll play along. LOL!). On the eve of his big Birthday set that Kimberly put together, Ant and I took Ern out for margaritas and wings. Come Saturday night, we joined Kim and a gang of Ern’s friends for bowling. And of course, karaoke couldn't be too far behind. Our Mara and Tommie came. Tata & Jules were in the house. All of his real estate compadres. And my Morehouse brothers Michael and Mario were there as they’ve known Ern since our college years when he’d visit me in school. FUN ALL AROUND punctuated by a birthday/Valentine’s Day nibble at “On The Border” with his best buddy Tina. And for his special occasion, he even got a hand-written card and video BDAY message from his favorite diva Vanessa Williams. GO ERN! ALL FOR YOUR 28TH! YAYYYY!
SHOUT OUTS
MOREHOUSE, MY NEPHEW, AND ME
My friend and Spelman sister Adrianne C. Smith sent these pix the other day of us in college. We – THE KING PLAYERS – were a musical theatre troop that traveled a bit with a musical “Martin”. At closer inspection, you’ll see our other Spelman sister Cassie Davis who has gone on to have huge success with Tyler Perry – including the hit TV show “House of Payne”. We all started together. I owe so much of my success to Morehouse – from the classroom to the networking to the exposure to the training for life and art. But my biggest THANKS to Morehouse is keeping her arms open long enough for my nephew Herman Lee Riley III to matriculate through those halls and create an even-more amazing life for himself from the place that did alright by me. He graduates in May. He’s already landed his first gig post-college (here in New York City as a marketing analyst for a household, Fortune 500 company). But even before all of that, he is one of 18 of the College’s best students selected to go on the 2010 Annual Spring Tour which – this year – travels to London, England, Edinburgh, Scotland, and Dublin, Ireland from March 4, 2010-March 12, 2010. He and his fellow Morehouse brothers will have the opportunity to interact with senior level management of major international corporations, such as Google and Goldman Sachs, and to examine their domestic and foreign operations. After being nominated by faculty members, the students wrote research papers describing the British Isles economies and their reaction to the “Great Recession”. From this pool of qualified students, selection was based on grade point average, scholastic honor, distinction, and extracurricular involvement. The eighteen students who were ultimately chosen are only a sample of the high caliber of students that Morehouse produces. The Spring Tour was developed and implemented in 1982. It was taken international in 1985. One of my fellow King Players, the late, great Benjamin P. McLaurin, Director of Career Counseling & Placement, took it to its current level of excellence. It was originally designed to allow accounting students to visit banking and accounting firms as well as graduate schools. The purpose of the tour has evolved to exposing Morehouse students to business customs and practices and to assist them in paralleling foreign customs and practices with domestic ones. Speaking of Morehouse, check out my Morehouse brother Kobie Brown’s project on FATHERS: The Kobie Chronicles Presents “From Fatherless To Fatherhood:
A video interview of Kevin Mason about fatherhood” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7dI8my_1KE. STRONG MEN KEEP A COMIN’!
"PRECIOUS" MEMORIES...HOW THEY LINGER IN MY SOUL!
PRECIOUS: ROUND 1 & ROUND 2
At the top of the week, I got to hear the final notes of a FEFE DOBSON show at UNIVERSAL CITYWALK's Hard Rock Cafe, but what resounds within my spirit is the preview screening of PRECIOUS I saw prior. WOW! HAUNTING! BONE CHILLING! DISTURBING even! STRONG PERFORMANCES all around!
FAST FORWARD a week or so to: AFI's L.A. premiere of "Precious" to which I got an invite. This night brought out the whole star-studded cast and its star executive producers and Sidney Poitier with whom I got the chance to reacquaint myself after interviewing him a few years ago in Santa Barbara. Like last time, he was GRACIOUS and PRESENT and so VALIDATING: BLACK MAN to BLACK MAN! Too, he endorsed Oscar-buzz-worthy Mo’Nique whose performance – as we’ve all heard – is spine-tingling and gutt-wrenching. Mo’Nique introduced Sidney to her husband Sidney as Sidney introduced his daughter Sydney to Sidney and Mo’Nique. Got it? Also in the house: Downtown Julie Brown and a host of others from the entertainment world – including "Precious" castmember Chyna Layne; Robi Reed, Kenya Moore, Lisa Raye, Saw VI/Scream girl Tanedra Howard; Andre Harrell, Forrest Whitaker & wife Keisha Whitaker, Mary J. Blige who performed at the after set which took place at Chateau Marmont. But DJ Mr. Best’s remix of Diana Ross' "My Old Piano" had everybody on the dance floor. Ran into my Yoga buddy Russell Simmons and MISS Paula Abdul at this set. And with my Spelman sister/publicist extraordinaire Jocelyn Coleman on my arm, she made care to ensure we were at the after-after party at Tyler Perry's L.A. home in the hills. What a GREAT NIGHT!
FRIENDS, LOVERS, and DIRTY LAUNDRY (MAURICE JAMAL)
My boy Derek with whom I've been hanging a bit over the last couple of weeks here in L.A. reconnected me to industry friend Maurice Jamal with whom I had the chance to bond during his New York City run a year or so back - promoting the feature "Dirty Laundry" (starring Rockmond Dunbar, Loretta Devine, and Jenifer Lewis). Maurice directed and starred in it. Prior to that, we'd auditioned alongside each other for a couple of hosting opportunities... and we hit it off! Good to see him on the West Coast (his neck of the woods). Last night, he preview screened exclusively (with cast, crew, and friends) his new film/proposed series "Friends and Lovers" at John Casablanca's modeling agency. From my "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" vaults, see an interview I did with him a couple of years ago:"DOING LAUNDRY WITH MAURICE JAMAL".
I LOVE MAURICE! HE'S JUST JOY AND LIGHT! But he was dark at his HALLOWEEN party! Halloween is a big deal in L.A. I went to a "scary" Maurice Jamal's Halloween party (pictured). I went as a Cal State-Fullerton Freshman-turned-Psycho-during-Finals! LOL! Ran into great friends Robin Hood (Lloyd Boston); Basketballer a la DIVAS 2000: TRIBUTE TO DIANA ROSS-hair (Patrik Ian Polk); Run (a la Run DMC AKA Derek Lafayette); and new ...buddies Jason (as Cliff Huxtable in his famous pajamas) & his partner Anthony (as a FLIRT). Thanks to friend - a "slinky" Herndon Davis - for the invite. Also, great to see where new Diana soul-mate Dale Guy Madison seemingly combines a couple of Rock royals: Prince and Little Richard to regal effect. Lots of FUN!
COCKTAILS & KARAOKE
My girlfriend Ev had a get together at her home in L.A. Good to hang out with my colleagues on "Monica" (and "Frankie & Neffe"). And that, of course, includes my Shareen, my soul mate in managing long-distance love (Her Kenny was in town for a visit.). What a lovely night with good people and GREAT food! Everything was well-appointed and just so elegant like the hostess. She entertained the troops with the sounds of MISS ROSS and Michael Jackson... and we danced, shouted, and shook our bodies down to the ground... where approriate. My buddy Brian joined me. A good time was had by all. And afterwards, we joined Brian's friend LiLing and her friends at Backstage Bar & Grill in Culver City. We were right across the street from Sony Studios. For what? My favorite: karaoke, which always excites me!!! I did an ensemble number with the ladies: "Material Girl" by Madonna. Of course, it wouldn't be long before I took over (some gospel ad-libs to boot. Sorry Madge! LOL!).
ATL HOUSEWIVES MARATHON ON BRAVO
Since my extended stay doesn't have BRAVO, I was WAY EXCITED that my day of R&R (napping and doing nothing) could be scored by the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" marathon - repurposed on OXYGEN, one of the few channels the hotel has. I'm still not caught up with the whole season, but got to see a ...handful of 'em:
"YOU KEEP PRAYING, SAYING THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY..."
.
CALLING ALL ALTER EGOS
Spelman College Museum of Fine Art has partnered with my blog "A Day in the Life of Riley: Pop Culture & Possibilities" in the promotion of “Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities,” an original exhibition on view through December 5, 2009. PLEASE CHECK IT OUT:
“Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities” @ Spelman College Museum of Fine Art
.
And I’m still taking responses to the question: WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO? WHY? Hit me up and I’ll share it in my next installment in the coming week or two.
MONICA: STILL STANDING
Well, the proof is in the pudding! MONICA: STILL STANDING is a BIG HIT! Highest rated debut on BET this season! 2nd highest debut in history of network (just a little behind "Tiny & Toya" which premiered after post-Michael-Jackson-death BET Awards). Tangible evidence that my sacrifice to do this great gig... (a la cross-country displacement/money woes/etc.) was not IN VAIN. People are actually watching! THANKS ALL! And PLEASE keep tuning in. 11 more episodes to go... And to put it in perspective, 3.2 million viewers watched the Premiere and Encore of "Monica: Still Standing" - #1 debut this season and #2 series launch in BET history. 11 more episodes to go (every Tuesday night at 10pm). THANKS TO ALL! GO TEAM MONICA!
MICHAEL JACKSON: CHILDHOOD/THRILLER!!!
Being at "The Farmer's Market" for the first time since childhood walked me down memory lane as fellow producers/friends Shareen (pictured); Evolyn; and I eased on down the road to The Grove. A run into newlyweds Lamar Odom & Khloe Kardashian turned our heads, it was MJ's "This Is It" that knocked us out! WOW! The Genius of Michael Jackson on the big screen is a MUST SEE! And Shareen was first in line... just to make sure we didn't have any worries with seating. And we didn't. But I was right behind her... just in case. LOL! Ev's beau Gary even joined us just before the film started... and we were able to save him a seat. But don't get it twisted: the place was packed! I must go back!
ANT IS RADIO RAHEEM
Michael Jackson's "This Is It" is a THRILLER but look who's BAD in this photo. My phone voice/text mailbox and FB message box were overflowing with those of you who saw Ant on "The Wendy Williams Show" today. She invited Ant and his fellow colleagues to showcase their 'alter egos'. Ant is RADIO RAHEEM from "Do The Right Thing". AWESOME, right?
ED ROEBUCK GOODBYE PARTY (OR SEE YOU IN A-T-L)
My friend Ed Roebuck invited me to his going-away party in Beverly Hills. He's leaving L.A. for Atlanta. Lots of good folks were in the house - including Norwood who I finally got to meet and with whom I got to engage in an awesome conversation - about Michael Jackson (Norwood and I have many mutual friends). Everybody was sad to see Ed go, but so happy for him as he takes this big step into his WHAT'S NEXT? Also in the house: new friend, "Eyebrow King" Damone Roberts. He reported to me - HOT OFF THE PRESSES - that he's partnering with Disney which will install his franchise into its parks - so he can makeover little girls into Princess Tiana, the first African American, animated lead in Disney film, "The Princess and The Frog". Love the synergy of this since I had the luxury of hosting the event that unveiled the voice of Anika Noni-Rose and her alter-ego Princess Tiana - the incarnation that will actually greet little girls and boys in the Disney parks:
"...THIS DREAM IS FOR ALL OF US. THIS ONE CAN BE REAL..."
. CONGRATS DAMONE! WILL MISS YOU, EDWARD!
R.I.P. SOUPY SALES
By the way, R.I.P. SOUPY SALES. Brought my family many laughs and I had the chance to interview him and produce an award-winning-feature on him with Al Roker in the late '90s at NYC's Friar's Club. His passing triggered that long-forgotten, but treasured, moment.
"LORD, I THANK YOU FOR MY LIFE!"
Smokie Norful - Dear God (Live)
It feels so good to make it this far
And I didn't think I could take it so long
There were days I wanted to quit
I said surely this is it but I held on
And I watched as so-called friends turn and walk away
It hurt so much I didn't have words to say
But even when my day turns to night and nothin' seems just right
Lord, I thank You for, for my life
For my life, Lord, I thank You
For every victory in You I've seen
And all the moments I know it was You who kept me
So I thank You for, for my life
And I watched you take my family from there to here
And when times where a lil' rough, God, I know You were near
And the moments I thought I'd fail, I was reminded of your nails
So I held on
And if I never live to see another day
There is nothin' I would change or take away
I've had so many ups that they far outweigh my downs
Lord, I thank You for my life
I realized some didn't make it
I could've been one of the ones who lost my way
And there was times, Lord, I knew I almost went crazy
But I'm still here with my life
It may not be all that I hope for
And every dream has not yet been realized
And to see Your face one day, God
I know it's all gonna be worth it
So I thank You, thank You for every mountain, every valley
God, everythin' You brought me through, thank You
I know, I know it was You
Just wanna take the time to say thank You Jesus, for my life
This song ‘bout had me driving off the 110 South as I was going to San Pedro this past Sunday. It says so much of what I feel inside as I am managing this L.A. living for which I am most grateful as it’s a good thing to work on a project you believe in. And even if – in my case – I’ve had to trek cross-country to hold onto it (and I have to dig even deeper into my pockets and my core to maintain my West Coast temporaries alongside my East Coast life back home), I know that I am covered and protected and supported by something and – surely – SOMEONE BIGGER THAN me.
The evidence is in MY LIFE: I am working – through likely February - on a team (as field and story producer) to bring Dubose Production’s “MONICA: STILL STANDING” to life (It premieres Tuesday, October 27th at 10:00 pm). I am also EXCITED that I am a contributing reporter on the "We Dream A World With an African American President in The White House" in the current issue of ESSENCE Magazine (Starting on p. 156, brothers - several of whom I interviewed - examine how the image of Black manhood is evolving). I’m getting lots of cool feedback! Please check it out!
Meanwhile, I’m having a blast inside my blog’s partnership with Spelman College Museum of Fine Art in the promotion of “Undercover: Performing and Transforming Black Female Identities,” an original exhibition on view through December 5, 2009. (Spelman Museum Tour) As a Morehouse Man, I consider this collaboration with my 'sister alma mater' a total honor.
The exhibit 'Undercover' (detailed in the attached documents) examines the social implications of race, gender, and disguise. And the Museum emphasizes works by and about women of the African Diaspora (and well-known, mid-career, and emerging artists are a part of this exhibit - detailed in the attached documents).
But to put some POP in the effort, the marketing team sought me out to ask some CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network (and representatives of CELEBRITIES and FRIENDS in my social network) some questions - the responses of which I’ll be sprinkling into my blog next week… as well as the exhibit’s website.
Look for fun responses from Spelman celebs like my girl Bridget Bland (of “Harlem Heights” fame) and TV actress Sharmell Sullivan Huffman; and others like NBC Digital Correspondent Mara Schiavocampo; soul singer Ledisi; style expert Michaela Angela Davis; DIVA Sheryl Lee Ralph; and many more. BY THE WAY, WHO IS YOUR ALTER EGO?
Mariah Carey - ribbon (studio Version)
It's only been 20 good minutes since I kissed you
Come back boo, I miss you
Wish I had 20 million hours to caress you
And undress you, to be continued
Boy you, you don't know how it feels when you whisper in my ear
Boy you, you give my body chills whenever you are near
And boy I got your lovin' on my mind
I got your lovin' on my mind
You got me wrapped up, packed up
Ribbon with a bow on it
Sometimes we argue and we fight
But they better know that that's my baby
You might even think he cute
But everybody knows that I'm his lady
Every time you see us, we super fly
So proud he's by my side
He knows I'm ride or die
You don't know how we roll
Holla at your people
Boy you, you don't know how it feels when you whisper in my ear
Boy you, you give my body chills whenever you are near
Got ribbon with a bow on it baby
Boy you don't even know the things you do
I could spend my whole life with you
I got your lovin' on my mind
Baby I could spend my life with you
It's been 20 good minutes since I kissed you
Come back boo I miss you
Okay, so Ant played this new Mariah chestnut from her “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” and – like Janet’s “With U” from “20 Y.O.” – he’s declared this "our song". Of course, the crier that I am, the tears poured down my cheeks as I took him to the airport last week when he was here for DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING. (Truthfully this long distance doesn’t feel like it’s getting better. But now we have something to look forward to as I am going home for my birthday and Thanksgiving before returning to L.A. to complete the two months of post-production on MONICA).
In the meantime, we do what we can to stay amused respectively. Last week, my dear friend Zabrina (BET PR) called me in the 11th hour with a ticket to attend The Fox Reality Channel's 2009 REALLY Awards - chockfull of reality TVs best - including nominees and presenters Tiny & Toya - from the Dubose production family of which I'm apart these days a la "Monica: Still Standing" and "Frankie & Neffe". Also in attendance: Vivica A. Fox (host); Paris Hillton; Hugh Hefner; Claudia Jordan; Ray J; Hammer; Antonio Sabata; American Idol's 'bikini girl'; Nikki Hilton; Kim Kardashian; ATL Housewife Kim; Aaron Carter; Eric Roberts; Lorenzo Lamas; Melissa Rivers; Lance Bass; and more! After party was at AREA in West Hollywood.
Ant got to see PRECIOUS – a sneak peek of which I plan to see in the coming days here in L.A. Ant says it brought him chills and tears… and still haunts him throughout his days since he saw it. He says Mo’Nique should – for sure – win the Oscar.
My friends – new and old - have been there for me over these last days here in L.A.:
Got to connect with high school best friend Maurice Marable recently at Four Seasons (Beverly Hills). He was in town directing the new campaign for the new season of HBO series “Big Love”. Turns out he also directed Monica's campaign for BET. We are collaborating and didn't know it (since the content producing team is different from the ad campaign folks is even different from the crew that does the title sequence, who I just found out is my AUC brother Randy). We LOVE the synergy though! LOL!... and of course, the chance for Maurice and me to catch up as we're still quite close, but don't see each other often enough with our respective busy-ness.
Afterwards, connected with friends Brian, Li-Ling, and J for Fashion Week party at The O Hotel in Downtown L.A. And did I mention that Brian accidentally dropped my camera? Soon to be replaced. Meanwhile, this file photo of Maurice and me will have to do. http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/4/-weve-come-a-long-way-baby.html
And in the wake of a stressful Friday (date changes on L.A. project and assignment tweaks), my friends Brian and Kelly called me off the cliff and out (on them) - starting with Zanzibar in Santa Monica. Then, friends Derek & Keith asked us to join them at Dragonfly. And from there, Denny's (after Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles was closed). GOOD FRIENDS (and sponsors) can protect us from the damage a fall can do.
From that moment, friends Derek and Keith invited Brian and me to a rooftop set in Downtown L.A. yesterday. Good folks. Good food. Afterwards, Derek and I capped night off - briefly - in WEHO. Another spot to which he took me is La Velvet Margarita Cantina. On this night, I jaunted over to Tony & Scott's place to taste Scott's father's pound cake & Tony's red velvet cake. Love my friends for providing me cheap and/or sponsored comforts as I manage my East Coast/West Coast situation.
And to cap off this most recent weekend, many headed to Brian's San Pedro digs for a cookout (and more football! LOL!). And then, Derek, Keith, and I enjoyed an evening at THE ABBEY – all in a weekend.

Everybody look around
'Cause there's a reason to rejoice you see
Everybody come out
And let's commence to singing joyfully
Everybody look up
And feel the hope that we've been waiting for
Everybody's glad
Because our silent fear and dread is gone
Freedom, you see, has got our hearts singing so joyfully
Just look about
You owe it to yourself to check it out
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Everybody be glad
Because the sun is shining just for us
Everybody wake up
Into the morning into happiness
Hello world
It's like a different way of living now
And thank you world
We always knew that we'd be free somehow
In harmony
And show the world that we've got liberty
It's such a change
For us to live so independently
Freedom, you see, has got our hearts singing so joyfully
Just look about
You owe it to yourself to check it out
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Well, it should be no news that President Obama is being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! Go Obama! Yayyy Peace! Since my Diana was the featured performer at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Norway last year (Diana Ross - Supremes Medley live at the Nobel ...), of course I’ve been wondering who would be the featured entertainment this year. Ross has a show ready as she just performed in Amsterdam for two sold-out shows (30,000-seat arena) for the Symphonica in Rosso. This spectacular is an annual concert series that years prior featured Dutch artists Marco Borsato and Paul de Leeuw; and her former and fellow Motown mate and duet partner Lionel Richie. The show was BIG – featuring many costume changes; the 40-piece Symphonica in Rosso-orchestra; dancers; and Diana’s amazing voice and catalog – including Netherland favorites like “Ease on Down The Road”. And one of my favorites: “Brand New Day” (also an homage to her ‘Wiz’ co-star Michael Jackson) -

Meanwhile, “CALL TO THE OBAMAS? MISS ROSS is workin’ it… and notwithstanding a diaper change to her new grandbaby boy… could serve the world yet again with a sparkling performance of Nobel worthiness…”. Just saying…
"... COLORED PEOPLE ON!!!!!!!"
My buddy Greg Dunmore sent me this tid-bit from fellow NABJ member Richard Prince’s column (http://www.mije.org/richardprince/tapestry-modern-america-praises-kennedy). It chronicles how the Diana Ross-led trio, biggest American musical act of the ‘60s, faced a color barrier few today would imagine: getting on the cover of Detroit’s Sunday magazine of TV listings. This, while their fans were at home on their linoleum kitchen floors exclaiming to anyone within the sound of their voices: “…. COLORED PEOPLE ON!!!!!” How far we’ve come… and yet some things are poised for improvement. STILL! THANKS GREG!
Meanwhile, I’m STILL in L.A. – home of many things TELEVISION and I’m still working in the business. Ant and I are brainstorming ideas to have my own show and some other projects green light --- one day at a time, sweet Jesus. This, as we contribute at high frequencies to our respective clients – from ‘Monica’ to ‘Frankie & Neffe’ to “The Wendy Williams Show” and beyond…
Until I need to be camera ready, I’ve been sporting a new look that kinda' happened from a space of laziness and depression: a goatee (of sorts). As I manage the latter (and took in the positive feedback), I decided to play around with it a little bit more.
Work is going fine here in L.A. as we post-produce Monica's episodes for BET. Admittedly, I'm a little down and isolated from being so far from home for so long... and I'm having a hard time shaking that blues. But the checks are catching us up... but not completely just yet as I manage East Coast expenses and have to put myself up here on the West Coast (hotel & car rental, EH!). But one day at a time, I'm somehow doing it (with lots of support).
Now, on to some of the social snapshots that have kept me entertained here in L.A.:
This past Sunday, I got an invite to see a cool play with music "Naked Boys Singing!" featuring new friend Eric B. Anthony. Also featured is my NYC friend-of-friend Tony Melson. I met Tony five or so years ago in New York City through my actor/singer/dancer friends Erich McMillan and Kimberly Jajuan. I really enjoyed the piece which has a production in New York City that I never got to see – in part because I found the cast a bit homogenized. With this company, I’m happy to say that there is diversity… and Eric B. and Tony rise to the top in their roles. I was even more excited to see that the writers (in addition to DIVA wordsmith Bruce Vilanch) are also diverse, including songwriter/arranger (and performer in his own right) Trance Thompson, who did the big ‘The Entertainer’ number that brings the crowd to its feet – especially the way Eric B. Anthony performs it.
After the play, Eric, his friend Andre (another new-to-L.A. actor), and I decided to grab a bite at Bossa Nova. We hooked up with our mutual friend Delandis there. Then, we did a roll by The Abbey where many folks were out including my buddy Jensen Atwood of "Noah's Arc" fame. I had the chance to interview him four or so years ago in Indianapolis. He told me that he loved my interviewing style and found it to be one of his most enjoyable. Imagine my surprise when – after all these years – he came up to me, remembered me, and agreed to another photo op. My buddy Tony who hosts a fun dance contest every Tuesday night at Micky's in West Hollywood was also there. Our heads didn’t get cut off this time. SMILE!
It’s been bittersweet of late as my girlfriend Sidra has packed up her L.A. bags and headed back to New York City. Though I’ll see her upon completion of my work, she’s been such the saving grace for me here in L.A. We made the best of it by hanging out every single day until her departure. On one night, though, she was to take me to R&B LIVE in Hollywood (I hear it's great entertainment). But her schedule didn't allow. It freed me to hang with my college mate Danni. She took me to Mani's Bakery (Hearty, organic cuisine!). Sid made up for it another night when - after I woke up on the wrong side of the bed (and subsequently got back in - fetal position - for what getting up created), she came to the rescue: Her friend Marilyn invited us to the birthday party of her cousin, L.A. Anchor Marc Brown. His place in The Valley is absolutely gorgeous and chockfull of details that made for a fun night. Perfect backdrop for uplift.
Another highlight from the week came with a PART 1 and a PART 2. My Morehouse brother Redic asked me to host his art gallery opening at his Eclectic Order Gallery Manchester (www.eclecticorder.com). Its proceeds partially benefited our alma mater Morehouse College’s Scholarship Fund. Eclectic Order Gallery Manchester is located at 1514 W. Manchester Blvd., L.A. And Redic opened up shop with an awesome combo of spoken word, jazz, neo-soul music, rock, etc. And I just anchored the night as I do because so much of it was organic and divine. My buddy Ed Roebuck came out to support along with a number of fellows from MOCITI: MEN OF COLOR IN THE INDUSTRY. On this night, Redic - an artist; singer; songwriter; fashion designer; etc. gave the audience a sneak-peek of what was to come the following night.
"Redic Unveiled" popped off the next night… and I just had to see what he had in store. I also enrolled Morehouse brother Steven Foley, a filmmaker his own, to come and check it out.Great to see Steven and catch up on all he's working on. Stay tuned for those updates. And new buddy Derrick Garcia, dancer and choreographer, also came. And I bumped into Morehouse brother Charles Reese who is still starring in an "WHO...", an original web comedy series (WWW.AJAKWETV.COM). On this night, Redic let it all show. And the audience and the community of folks in attendance just loved it! And I love Redic and am so PROUD of him! Stay encouraged, my friend!
And one of my new L.A. ride-or-dies Javier was supposed to come on the opening night. However, he stumbled into a gig with KTLA: http://www.ktla.com/news/local/alliemackay/
It’s Christmas in September (at least for a good cause: TOYS FOR TOTS). And Javier was SANTA – making many of the folks in attendance at this benefit – held at THE ABBEY – happy to share their Christmas wish list with SANTA! He’s been in town just a few months and in addition to acting courses and auditions, he’s booking a lot of modeling work. KEEP DOIN’ IT, J!
OF COURSE, I’m missing Ant as I try to keep my days in L.A. interesting without him. But like me, he too is getting the chance to be out and about – including Serena Williams’ book launch party. There, he got to strike a pose with Kelly Rowland and others (By the way, have you heard her new song "When Love Takes Over"? I like it: YouTube - David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland - When Love Takes Over ...
).
And on “Wendy”, he got the chance to hang out with and support our girl Sheryl Lee Ralph whose ‘right hand’ Scott (not in attendance) is a dear friend of ours. In fact, Ant is coming to L.A. next week to see me and Sheryl’s DIVAS: SIMPLY SINGING (www.divassimplysinging.com) which she promoted on the show along with some fab new wig looks.
And our good girlfriend Mara (as Schiavocampo from NBC) just celebrated her 30th BDAY at a New York City space I recommended to her, Taj (www.tajlounge.com). My Itika even flew in from Chicago for the occasion… and Ern and NABJ girlfriend Sia also attended along with Mara's handsome hubby Tommie. The only thing missing - I'm told - was me! LOL! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARA!
Ant’s and my buddies Troy and Darryl founded Bangin’ Ass Artists (www.banginassartists.com). I’ve blogged about them before. Well, they have a show coming up on October 10th that you don’t want to miss: TRINA BROUSSARD/RA-RE VALVERDE/RUSSELL TAYLOR. Check out the website for more info. These brothers are doing the thing to promote unheralded, independent artists with HUGE talent.
I’m always so proud of my friends when they are doing amazing things. On top of an already demanding career and family of husband and two-in-tow, my dear girlfriend (from way back in the day) Candi Carter is the creator of “It’s Hip Hop, Baby!” (www.itshiphopbaby.com/). I had the privilege of introducing her kid-focused, educational DVDs to star of my current project, Monica and her two sons. Lil Rocko and Romelo LOVED them, Monica says – so much so – that she’s agreed to say so. As Christmas nears, you may want to follow suit with Miss Monica… and pick up one or all in the special series which keeps the kids grooving while they learn their ABCs and 123s and more. Meanwhile (and I'm not saying this because I'm working on her reality project), I am SO EXCITED for Monica's new music to hit the airwaves and to see her fans (and perhaps even her doubters) FALL BACK IN LOVE with her!!! GO MONICA, GO!
As my return to NYC is still to be determined (October? November? December? Even January?): NYC CULTURE rules. Daughter of my late, great friend Pat Tobin, Lauren, continues to operate inside the excellence and professionalism of her mother (and the standard she had already begun to incorporate into her own PR brand). She reached out to me regarding her client Colman Domingo’s new stage piece “A Boy and His Soul” – which happens to be choreographed by dear friend of Ant’s and mine, Ken Roberson. Colman starred in Ant’s and my favorite Broadway musical last year, “Passing Strange”. Ant will check it out soon. I’ll hopefully get to catch it when I get back (if it’s still running). But if you are in NYC or going, make sure you check it out at the Vineyard Theater (www.vineyardtheatre.org/show-a-boy-and-his-soul.html).
So, it’s no secret that I love Tony Award winning actress Anika Noni Rose, who recently made history by being cast as the first-ever African-American princess in Disney's The Princess and the Frog. And can we say DREAMGIRLS?????? Well, she takes another dimension of step in the direction of TV as she has signed on to host the new season of AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange. It’s an innovative documentary series on contemporary life, art and pop culture in the African Diaspora, AfroPoP’s second season comes to public television in October 2009. The series is produced by the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) with which I have a little link through one of my National Association of Black Journalists Arts & Entertainment Task Force members (one of the dedicated, hard-working ones) Jacqualine Williams. She introduced them to NABJ – so NBPC could participate in our Tampa convention. Turns out that one of its programming execs Christian is an old “student” of mine from the days when I taught the New York Association of Black Journalists’ High School Journalism Workshop. So, the synergies here are really good. As the series host, Anika will introduce audiences to powerful stories about African boxers who journey across the Atlantic to match their skills against the best in global contests; a teenage girl who travels to Ghana and a Sierra Leone ex-patriate who returns to his homeland, each hoping to dispel prevailing myths about the two continents; and, Hurricane Katrina victims who find themselves refugees in their own country. CONGRATS ANIKA!
And though I’ve been behind the mic in the medium of radio before, I'm putting on a new pair of headphones as a guest on The Dr. Mario Show this week. (You’ll recall, an impression I made on XM Satellite Radio after I appeared on MILLION DOLLAR PASSWORD last year ("AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH!!!"): http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/GayleKingInterview.mp3 Well, I’m as excited to have been invited to be a guest on The Dr. Mario Show (“Your Prescription to a Better Life!”)). As I’ve blogged before, Mario is a student at Cal State Fullerton. We’ll be on the Titan Radio Station’s airwaves at 7pm on Thursday and you can find out more (including how you can listen in) via www.calldrmario.com and Dr. Mario says the show will be about me and my journey from Tokyo to Savannah and beyond – underscoring my insights that are applicable to upcoming college students and college students getting ready to step into the rest of their lives. Plus, he's got questions around networking and convention programming much like he got to witness as we met at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention where Mario saw me in super-active pose. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences and reminding myself some of the tips that I may have taken for granted along the way. This, towards getting my CENTER back. My CHI is still off, though I'm carrying on...
Well, as my former colleague Frankie offers: “… the morale of the story is…” (just that part. The rest attributes Donnie McClurkin…): "...After you've done all you can, you just STAND..."
And GOD continues to work it out via his many earth angels like Ant, Mario, Audrey, Paul, Sidra, Jav, etc. AMEN! <not out of the woods but breathing better, hear?>
"I'M SO GLAD WE HAD THIS TIME TOGETHER..."
So, check out “Out” magazine (www.out.com) this month (http://www.out.com/detail.asp?id=25657
). I am featured in the lead story photo inside the current issue which profiles Food Network star Sandra Lee (page 51): http://www.zinio.com/reader.jsp?issn=1062-7928 (click on the page at the bottom of the screen). You may recall, I shot it last year. I met Sandra Lee one night at a NYC cocktail party hosted by a friend. On this night, Sandra asked me to come visit her photo shoot for OUT Magazine the following day as I knew her publicist Audra. Upon my arrival to the photo studio, she asked if I'd join the shoot as she had - since the night prior - been going goo-goo and ga-ga over my ---- get this ---- cheekbones. Suddenly, I was being whisked away from the kraft service table into wardrobe, hair, and makeup. QUITE THE RUSH! Well, here it is: http://www.zinio.com/reader.jsp?issn=1062-7928And this is how I blogged about it last year: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/15/butterflies-begin-from-having-been-another.html R.I.P. to E. LYNN HARRIS: Without him, I may not have ever gotten to the point where I would agree to do such a shoot. His works - from "Invisible Life" to the present - helped me EMBRACE MY TRUTH... and helped me be PROUD about who I am - for "the world to know"! I am HAPPY and HUMBLED to be a part of this layout as perhaps the extent of the diversity on the particular page.
Another highlight from the last couple of weeks was being able to do a few days of business back in New York City (as I’ve been holed up in Atlanta on a project featuring singer Monica).I can’t detail all the goings on but you’ll be able to see it yourself come October on BET. The best part is I got the chance to see Ant as we were put up at The Hudson Hotel (www.hudsonhotel.com) - a stone’s throw from his day work on “The Wendy Williams Show” (www.wendyshow.com).I got the chance to introduce Ant to Monica. And we got the chance to introduce to Monica my nephew Noot, who has been the Grammy-award-winning diva’s #1 fan for many years. In addition to a reality show, Monica has a new CD coming out… and I trust it to be a big hit for her. Though work, great to share it with my guys.In between our long-in-the-tooth shooting days, Ant and I got to hang out a little – including some time at my old stomping ground for ‘intimate evenings of song’ The Duplex (http://216.117.188.141/rileyshowforkodjoe.wmv). My “Broadway baby love” Ken Roberson performed The Wiz’s “If You Believe” and Pippin’s “Magic To Do” for the spirited crowd. We also got to hang out with our friends at spots like “Nowhere” and “Splash”.But we had a blast hanging in Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn (www.fortgreenepark.org) with Ant’s Denver buddies Manivone, Chris, Reggie, and many others. On this night, we enjoyed a taste of Greek cuisine at a neighborhood spot (juxtaposed to now-old-hat-soul-food–since–in-Atlanta from Amy Ruth --- www.amyruthsharlem.com) and we even got a little karaoke in at our favorite spot One 7 (www.karaoke17.com). While in NYC working, I got access to Whitney Houston’s listening party. However, scheduling didn’t allow me to attend.Still, New York City provided me lots of pleasure – including a quick visit with my Detroit buddy Greg Dunmore with whom I spent lots of quality time on my last leg of L.A. (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/6/23/hes-hoppin-it-to-hollywood.html). We dined at the Hudson Hotel’s “Kitchen”. Check out Greg’s HAT CONTEST PROMO for Aretha’s SOLD-OUT Detroit Fox date from a week or so ago: www.youtube.com/?v=m1pjxxPOVso.
I have been working alongside Monica for the last month and change (not to mention the chance to work with some of the best and most kind folks in the business). And on top of that, there have been some additional, personal highlights to my time here.I was excited to get the chance to warm up for an exclusive performance she recently did at my Morehouse brother Christian Ruffin’s place “The View” (www.TheViewatKingPlow.com).His One Stop Productions company (www.OneStopProduction.com) managed the sound, lighting, staging, etc. for the affair. Though in place as a stretching mechanism for Monica’s fab costume changes, it was good to be on the stage and to be given an opportunity to let my personality shine through.I sang too! Lots of fun.Plus, I got to invite some dear friends out – including my homegirl from Savannah (READ: elementary school) Tonja (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/26/its-good-to-be-black.html).She brought her husband Andrew who is managing a music group 430 that is creating quite the buzz on the charts and on the road as they prepare to tour stateside and internationally (www.myspace.com/4thirty). Tonja also proved herself quite the “A Day in the Life of Riley” correspondent as she also took this pic at our high school classmate Anthony David’s recent Atlanta set that I couldn’t attend due to scheduling (www.anthonydavidmusic.com/).Also, my girl Elise – Media Relations Manager at Morehouse (www.morehouse.edu) - came and enjoyed the show along with Morehouse brother Jabez Shakur (www.marooninstitute.com). And amidst our preps for this project, Monica’s makeup artistChristian – also a friend of my L.A. buddies Scott and Tony – and I got to enjoy some lovely meals at two ATL hot spots: “Geisha House” (www.dolcegroup.com) and “Two Urban Licks” (www.twourbanlicks.com).He's been an awesome host to me - and not always as over as the accompanying picture, but always cute, fly, and so cool!
I also got some quality time with family and friends. My brother Herman, sister Janice, and I got the chance to spend some quality sibling time together. Of course, we did one of our favorite things to do: EAT. First, Houston’s (www.hillstone.com). Then, Busy Bee (for banana pudding): www.thebusybeecafe.com. Also, we got the chance to memorialize Michael Jackson (as a family) since he was such a part of our growing up.We met him on Norton Air Force Base in San Bernadino, CA at an airplane expo: The Thunderbirds. Also, we shared an audience with him at Magic Mountain for a Sylvers Concert. Then, there are the Jacksons/solo shows we've attended in addition to one moment in Atlanta when I got to meet him at The Omni for a charity benefit at which he made an appearance with TLC. Oh! And I attended that pre-9/11 30th Anniversary concert in September of 2001.We played Michael all day and night long which brought a bit of closure to The King of Pop’s passing (I wondered why I hadn’t quite gotten over it yet. I was waiting on this moment with my brother and sister.). Janice, cousin Floyd, and I got the chance to do a meal at “Six Feet Under” (www.sixfeetunderatlanta.com) followed by a screening of DVD “Madea Goes To Jail” (www.madeagoestojailmovie.com/).
And my friends popped by too – including my Morehouse brother Khalid with whom I enjoyed Ron Winans and Gladys Knight Chicken ‘n Waffles (www.gladysandron.net).Also, on the Morehouse tip, I stumbled into my Spelman sister Laura Morse while in the Atlanta airport. Always good to see my peeps. And Morehouse brother Michael K. Watts was in town for business but made it his business to see me (in a very small window of time). He’s been doing some awesome work with his writing (as his Maxwell interview is featured in this month’s UPSCALE Magazine – www.upscalemagazine.com).But Michael is also doing some awesome work inside his longstanding brand as a collector of pop culture memorabilia. Stay tuned for more details on this special way in which Michael Jackson’s #1 fan is being a stand for the great entertainer’s legacy.
And there was lots of fun to be had at Midown Tavern (www.midtowntavern.net) where our friend Anthony Hill, head writer for Tyler Perry’s “Meet The Browns” (www.tbs.com/shows/meetthebrowns) invited us to karaoke.I experimented on Diana’s “Waiting in the Wings” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAVA6kBZ73Q). Anthony and I did The Spinners “Games People Play” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=5znh58WITU8). I got a showstopper in: Mariah Carey’s “Can’t Let Go” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLkwbUPfk3g).And SWV’s LeLee (my colleague Shareen’s buddy) was in the house. Shareen introduced us on our last stint in Atlanta.
Meanwhile, You recall I told you about Laurent Korcia earlier this year (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/1/14/through-the-mirror-of-my-mindi-see-reflections-of-you-and-me.html). Well, here’s a link to a recent NPR story on him: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106479206 His CD is coming out next week.
And one of my favorite New York City editors Kerry Soloway has some great programming coming on Public TV soon (www.NightingaleEditorial.com). It’s a Great Performances “Harlem in Montmartre”. Check it out!And my girlfriend Paula Witt is a part of a speakers’ bureau and spreading positive messages all over the world via “Truth Be Told Speakers” (www.truthbetoldspeakers.com). CONGRATS!
… and as I come to the end of this leg of my Atlanta stint, I head home for a few days.I’ll take a little breather, though will still be prepping for NABJ in Tampa (www.nabj.org) and my two-month stint in L.A. for which I still am trying to identify a place to stay. And when I get a moment in, I am simply counting my blessings!
