Well, fate has led me back to The Windy City which has nourished me professionally and personally. There are folks here – like my Morehouse best friend Eddie – who I’ve known since college. On this trip, I stumbled into someone my whole family has known since the mid-70s. And there is a long list of associates who I respect and hold dear alongside a short list of close friends who feel like family. It’s been over a year since I’ve been available to accept a Chicago-based assignment as I spent the lion’s share of my 2009 in Atlanta and L.A. And the top of this year blessed me with home-based work in New York City. But just as those local projects wrapped up (giving me room to re-fuel and re-connect with Ant who held down the home front with his work on ‘The Wendy Williams Show’), a call for a month-and-change of work came my way a la Chicago. So, here I am. And I must say it’s been just long enough that I had no problem being displaced yet again from home. This is what the freelance world requires. From whom much is given (in the way of the freedoms that independent client-work can bring), much is required (meaning you must sometimes chase those checks wherever they are being written).  And as I always approach the challenges of being on the road with a focus on quality of life, I’m so blessed to have folks in my life who are excited to be on that ride with me.  Each and every day of my time here in Chicago was chockfull of work – from conducting interviews; field producing shoots; scripting; screening tons of tape; supervising edits; designing graphics and other concepts; etc… and I have loved every single minute of it. But after the long-in-the-tooth days are done, I commit to reconnect socially and spiritually with the aforementioned friends and family. And what a time we are having.

My Morehouse BFF Eddie & I had a great catch-up at Cheesecake Factory on Michigan Ave (www.thecheesecakefactory.com).

Speaking of Morehouse, who is the proudest uncle ever? While here in Chicago, my Savannah home girl and Spelman sister was the first to send me the news that an Atlanta Journal Constitution article in which my nephew was quoted had hit the newsstands. My nephew Herman Riley is a graduating senior from my alma mater Morehouse (Ant and I will be there to celebrate him in mid-May):  http://www.ajc.com/business/colleges-students-use-new-448364.html. The story celebrates the necessary enterprise required for this crop of students to attract work their way inside this national recession. My nephew has landed a gig as a marketing analyst in my current home of New York City where he will be working for a Fortune 500 company. I AM SO PROUD!!!

My work friends Ki-Ki, Ti-Ti, and Lesia have grown – in my heart – to sister status! So, I – of course – spent lots of time with them. It turns out that Ki-Ki and I have friends in common around whom we’ve never spent time together. Her Howard U classmate Shaniqua is a TV anchor and reporter in Seattle. I know her from the National Association of Black Journalists through former-fellow-Board member Jala with whom I’ve bonded over the years via many a career and personal high & low. And we both are STILL STANDING! We were supposed to go to Zapatista (www.zapatistacantina.com) but the line was too long. Instead, we settled on an underwhelming alternative: Utopia International Caribbean Cuisine Restaurant. And though work friend Scott (who used to work with Shaniqua) and I made the best of our catfish dish, it was the fellowship and laughter that reigned supreme at this meal. Jakki gave me my first glimpse of her son Nicholas (She’s gotten married and had a baby since I’ve last been in Chicago. WOW!). Jala showcased her newborn Phoenix Rose, a debut that I knew nothing about until this little beauty did a catwalk (via her carriage) into the restaurant. And Eddie even popped by with our Listening Experience girlfriend Althea before they went to a jazz show. After this dinner and after their show, they invited me to join them at Marche for more chatting and chewing (www.marche-chicago.com). And Miss Ti-Ti and Lesia who had just seen Tyler Perry's latest play “Madea’s One Big Happy Family” (www.tylerperry.com) – a first for Lesia – stopped by and joined us as well (You’ll recall, I saw the piece when it came to NYC a few months ago).

The next night, my Ti-Ti took me to Flatwater Restaurant (www.flatwater.us)  - smack dab on the river - which morphs into a Saturday night set with cool people, bottle service, and an awesome mix of music for the steppers out there. We enjoyed that night which segued the following day (Sunday) into a rooftop cookout at one of Downtown Chicago's fab rooftops – both inside a birthday extravaganza for one of girlfriend’s boyfriends. Her buddies became my buddies - from Brian to Alpha, and I also got reacquainted with one of Neyo's producers Askia Fountain who I met at Neyo's compound last summer in ATL while I was field and story producing "Monica: Still Standing". Afterwards, some of us went to Mercadito (www.mercaditorestaurants.com) for supper. FUN TIMES in Chi!

My 'brother friend' Chicago Carl & I finally got to hang out after I'd been here working for a week. Not sure why it took so long for us to hang out. But we made up for it. On our first hang, we went to REPUBLIC for a showcase of male and female entertainers - including one who performed - of course - Monica's current #1: "Everything to Me" (with a preamble of the JD/B. Back to Chicago: Carl – a hairstylist of note here in Chi-town – also takes care of me in the way of ensuring I’m comfortable and accommodated inside my grooming needs. Too, he want to make sure I am not left to my homesick blues (being away from Ant and all. I mean, there’s only so much Diana on YOU TUBE I can click on to cheer me up or sulk in my sadness, though it often helps:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkFj-1OR1rQ ).

Carl also makes sure I get my hair cut and manicures & pedicures (as the budget allows).  I know I'm bald, but getting my haircut when I'm on long stretches in Chicago is key a la this past blog entry from a couple of years ago: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/1/15/-but-i-need-a-friend.html And Chicago Carl always comes through - this time taking me to Derrick Sibley at TIMEOUT AT SHANNON'S (www.timeoutatshannons.com). I love the shop and the energy inside of it. The folks have lots to say about pop culture & politics. And since I’m not shy, I chimed right on in – defending Ant’s and my latest favorite Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too?” (www.whydidigetmarriedtoomovie.com) from the second I got in the chair… during the haircut… and after! It wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea, I understand.

On one night (after a long day of work in edit), Carl took me to PLUSH (www.plushtuscon.com). It was quite the scene as Carl’s and my mutual friend Vince (whose partner Earl is one of Tyra’s glam squad folks) surprised me per Carl’s orchestration.  But there’s one surprise that Carl didn’t even know he was choreographing. As we were enjoying our comfort food and a cocktail or two – talking to our neighboring diners General and David (fast friends), one of Carl’s clients Tameka came in along with a group of ladies and her husband. None of us counted on her husband Daniel knowing me, but he did and guess from where and when? His family The Weathersbys and my family – The Rileys – were stationed together in San Bernadino, CA at Norton Air Force Base in the mid-to-late ‘70s. And though we’ve not seen each other since 1978 when my father got re-assigned to Warner Robbins Air Force Base near he and my mom’s childhood home in Savannah, Georgia. Family-to-family (mostly parents-to-parents), we’ve all stayed in touch (a la annual Christmas cards), but the kids really haven’t until FACEBOOK brought many of us back together over the last year. So much so, we’ve seen our ‘adult’ selves in many a FACEBOOK picture. And that is how he recognized me… and WHAT A GREAT REUNION IT WAS! SMALL WORLD, shrinking everyday! (Ironically, I lost my camera again – a sickness I have:  http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/26/its-good-to-be-black.html and http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/26/one-lost-camera-dont-stop-no-blog-entry.html - inclusive of the pix I took of Daniel, Tameka, and me; fortunately, it was in the lost-and-found at PLUSH when I went back the following day).

On another evening, Itika took me to a screening of Russell Crowe’s latest film “Robin Hood” (www.robinhoodthemovie.com). Not really my genre of film, but a date with Itika wins every time – especially when we went to join her friends Su, Reza, and others for cocktails at The Trump International Hotel & Tower's Rebar (www.trumpchicagohotel.com). This crew and I got along splendidly and I hope to see them soon as they promised to take me to dinner – limo service to boot. Stay tuned.

Houston’s Restaurant is Ant’s and my favorite. After it left Downtown Chicago, I took on J. Alexander as a close 2^nd. So, Chicago Carl chauffeured me to my staple: prime rib, baked potato, those tasty croissants, and a kir royale the other night! Perfect Friday meal before I got a good night of shut eye after a long day and week.

Though I had to work a little the next day (Saturday), I segued to my Ki-Ki's Chicago home to wrap my brain around the reality that she is somebody's mother and wife. Her kid Nicholas is 1 year old. And I got the luxury of celebrating his 1st birthday with the little man... and his parents - MRS. Jakki and hubby Duane. WHAT A BLESSING! Here Nicholas Ali poses with his mother (right) and her work friend (and mine) Sharvo. Of course, the lovely Miss Ti-Ti had to get in the picture (to the left... to the left...). And at a point, he gave his Uncle Rollo and Auntee Peaches some shine ( That’s Itika and me. Inside joke! LOL!). This, before opening his gifts. He got lots and lots of clothes a la Polo, Puma, etc. as he comes from the stock of label-aficionados (for sure, his mother. SMILE!). But I got him a big ol’ dog from the Disney store. He also is getting ready to get his literacy on with some of the classics – including Dr. Seuss’ “Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham”. GREAT TIMES as the adults enjoyed Ki-Ki’s pasta with fresh pesto along with a well-appointed spread of elegant-yet-hearty appetizers! I joked (kinda) that I wanted some fried chicken wings and potato salad as I am a simple boy with a simple palate from Savannah, Georgia. Her husband Duane echoed my sentiment – proving ourselves kindred as we were meeting for the first time. As a make good, he promises me some fried catfish on a return visit. HEY! LOL!

After a Sunday of screening tape, Chi Carl got me out to play. We did a drive by This Is It hair salon on the West Side to see Pierre & Jeffrey - friends of Carl who I've had the chance to hang out with before in Chicago; then, soul food at MacArthur's; then, cocktails at Kit Kat; followed by Brando's with the boyz - including Vince, Mike, and John. Then, a P.S. at Tantrum to say HI to Miss Jesse and her gal pal D.

Morehouse BFF Eddie & I got some more time in and had late supper at Houston's cousin Bandera (www.hillstone.com). While there, industry buddy and favorite photo-op partner Jensen Atwood popped over to my table to say HI (www.jensenatwood.com/)! He’s always such a pleasure. You know, I had a chance to interview him several years back at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention (www.nabj.org) as he and Patrik-Ian Polk promoted the LOGO show (and big screen sequel)  “Noah’s Arc”. He plays Wade, the love interest of the series’ namesake (www.logotv.com/shows/dyn/noahs_arc/series.jhtml). Since our interview, which he says was one of the best he’s done, he always enthusiastically receives me. In this case, when he saw me, he rushed over to Eddie’s and my table. I found out that he was in town – making an appearance at Club Circuit (www.circuitclub.com) a couple of nights prior. In fact, Itika (Ti-Ti) and Chicago Carl were supposed to take me to that spot on Saturday without my knowing it was linked to Jensen. Ultimately, we did not make it. But at least I got to see him at dinner. He updated me on all that’s going on in his impressive career (http://www.youtube.com/user/TheJensenAtwood) – including an upcoming Coors Light commercial and he’s featured in Toni Braxton’s “Hands Tied” video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6HVKXK8G70. GO JENSEN, GO! Afterwards, Eddie tossed me over to Chi Carl. They coincidentally went to high school together (Whitney Young). Chi Carl asked me to join him at REPUBLIC again for an encore presentation of dragiliciousness. More 'draggy' than 'licious' but what fun Chi Carl and I ALWAYS have. No shortage of laughter and ki-ki-ing when we're together! LOL! And they opened with Diana's "I'm Coming Out"! Always a BLAST!

But my stay at the Huntley Santa Monica (www.thehuntleyhotel.com) provided a better look than my last temp digs at an Extended Stay in Gardena, CA – sharp contrast to The Crescent Beverly Hills where I was first put up (www.crescentbh.com). This, though I did have some check-in snafus at The Huntley. And that produced a lovely, complimentary lunch of crispy-skin salmon and sauteed spinach at The Penthouse Restaurant overlooking the beach and the mountains. Quite beautiful! If I’d landed earlier, I might have snagged a cool social experience as Lisa Raye's TV-ONE reality show (www.tvoneonline.com) launch party was popping off at The Standard (www.standardhotels.com).  Shout out to my Spelman sister Tosha who helped put it on! I did get to hang with a few of my L.A. peeps for an after after set before turning in and conducting my interview in Santa Monica – all before hopping on a flight back to to Chicago.

My project wraps near the top of May. But I head back to NYC this weekend. I’ll do some work from home on this project while celebrating Ant’s birthday. We've long-planned this exciting weekend. Lots in store – from karaoke to a sneak-peek of “Fences” on Broadway with Denzel Washington (www.walktallgirlproductions.com/). Then, there's the King Tut exhibit at Discovery Times Square Expo (www.discoverytsx.com/exhibitions/kingtut). Stay tuned for that report.

• So I hear that Delores (AKA Button) – the wife of  my dear friend and colleague Keith Walker (www.mediaprocess.com) – has been a "closet" artist for about nine years.  She paints on canvas by way of acrylic & mixed media. Her work has been on display at Gallery Guishard in two separate art shows with great success.
•  Delores is now one of Chicago's best up & coming artists. BIRTHDAY GIRLS AND BOY

Consider it a birthday serenade, of sorts. Miss Ross recently celebrated another year of fierceness and fabulousness. But the big gift is ours as concert tickets have been cleared to see my favorite, 66-year-young diva Diana at Radio City Music Hall on May 19^th and – a week and change later – in Chicago, courtesy of my earth angel Sally Lou.  This “More Today Than Yesterday” tour promises lots of comfort and joy for me in May (http://www.facebook.com/#!/DianaRoss?ref=search&sid=662073736.1095004508..1). But there are also birthday shout outs due to our girlfriend Cy whose Big 3-0 fete Ant and I weren’t able to make. Still, we absolutely adore our diva girlfriend who is a Designer/Social Entrepreneur/Sustainable Lifestyle Branding Guru EXTRAORDINAIRE (http://www.vivedesignhaus.com/). We were, however, able to get out – in the 11^th hour for our other Aries birthday girl Dr. Shirley Madhere – plastic surgeon with the most (http://www.thenewaesthete.com/). She emailed us at 12 noon to show up at her last-minute brainchild of a celebration at the well-appointed, private club Norwood (www.norwoodclub.com/). And what a set it was as I uncovered that we have more mutuals in common than we knew about – including: “Why Did I Get Married Too?”s Malik Yoba; Yoki Brown (of Brandy's 'Full Moon' video notoriety - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxC1XZDghTc&feature=related); our girlfriend, good dentist Dr. Ericka; and my Lisa Goodnight's college mate Mica who inspired Ant and me to karaoke afterwards. She owns an anti-aging spa business which she is growing as it is still in the infant stages: www.myspatique.com, but look out: With Mica behind it, it promises to be a big success. While at our Dr. Shirley’s set, I got to reiterate to Malik - a regular reader of my blog 'A Day in the Life of Riley' - how great he is in "Why Did I Get Married Too?” Hopefully you have seen the film by now. Ant and I went a third time on our new favorite film’s opening night with Ern, Charlie T, and Danielle. AUDIENCES seem to be LOVING it… and are quite SHOCKED at several reversals Tyler Perry incorporated into the film to off-set critiques of being predictable and cliché. HAPPY EASTER DAY!

On this day, Ant and I celebrated a holiday meal with Ern, Danielle, her husband Bernard, and our girlfriend Tina. A couple of years ago, Ant, Ern, Danielle, and I did the same location - Delta soul food restaurant in New Brunswick, NJ near Rutgers University. Now, I’m packing for a multi-week stint in Chicago (with a quick stop in L.A.). With Spring in BLOOM, I’m thrilled and blessed that some work has accompanied it. And though I am still a work-in-progress on a journey that is chockful of twists and turns, I am so GRATEFUL to have so much LOVE and LIGHT around me. Today, as we all broke bread, fellowshipped, and acknowledged the reason for the season, I was reminded how GOOD GOD IS. And it is HE who sustains me while on this ride called LIFE.  

 

WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO?

Well, Ant & I have seen "Why Did I Get Married Too?" twice already… and it’s not out until the top of April (www.WhyDidIGetMarriedTooMovie.com). But you know how we do with our special ladies – his being Miss Jackson! Of course, we loved the sequel’s predecessor (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/10/11/what-has-pop-culture-done-for-me-lately.html)… and got to celebrate that one as well with Janet; Jill Scott; Tasha Smith; and Mr. Tyler Perry. This go around was no exception, though Miss Jackson managed to evade a second photo-op with us but not her date, oldest Jackson sibling Miss Rebbie "Centipede" Jackson. But then, we still got the chance to attend the NYC Premiere at the SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS THEATER. Then, the after party at THE BOWERY HOTEL. First, the movie was AMAZING! What a rollercoaster ride. We LOVED it! The highs were high; the lows were low; and it all had me emotionally riveted and quite proud of Miss Jackson for clearly channeling her real-life loss and churning it into this brilliantly-executed role. The rest of the cast is stellar as well… and a host of others. And they were all too glad to strike a pose amidst the night. ROLL CALL: Tasha Smith; Malik Yoba;  Michael Jai White; Richard T. BLACK ANGELS OVER TUSKEGEE: THE STORY OF THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN

Special shout out to “WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO” actor Lamman Rucker who I’ve known for years since he was first in New York City working on one of my favorite soaps “As The World Turns”. We’ve stayed in touch – whether in L.A. or NYC – over these years. To that, he has returned to the Stage for Off-Broadway’s historic drama that pays tribute to the Tuskegee Airman. It’s "Black Angels Over Tuskegee" at New York's St. Luke's Theater. The production is written and directed by Layon Gray. Lamman, who too is a 2010 NAACP Image Award nominee for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for "Meet The Browns", is joined by a stellar company of performers, who along with Rucker co-founded The Black Gents of Hollywood, an all-male ensemble driven to resurrect, redefine, and restore positive images of African-American men. TV One's UnSung is back for its third season… and I’ve seen screeners of Rose Royce (which just aired this week); Stacy Lattisaw; and Sylvester (running this week). It airs now on Monday nights… and is so entertaining. It's totally the kind of show on which I would work because it chronicles some of the most influential, talented and often forgotten R&B, Soul and Gospel artists of the last 30 years. This biography-style show promises to reveal the business and personal struggles that kept these artists from achieving the iconic commercial status they deserved.

MICHAEL K. WATTS, MAXWELL, & THE NYABJ AWARD

Best friend and Morehouse brother Michael K. Watts’ interview feature story on Maxwell won 2nd place in the Magazine - Arts & Entertainment category of the New York Association of Black Journalists Awards. The piece is featured in the August 2009 issue of Upscale magazine. Hung with girlfriend Sidra at her rooftop pool – always the thing to do on a lazy Saturday; however, NYC buddy Ike coordinated via remote the 2^nd part of my day. His best friend is actor Nate Parker (of “Great Debaters” and “Secret Life of Bees” fame). Nate invited me to join he, his wife Sarah (www.sarahdisanto.com) – an awesome designer in her own right; and Ike's friend Cassie Freeman (www.cassiefreeman.com) at Casa Vega (www.casavega.com) in the Valley (great conversation!). Big shout out to Ike for bringing us all together, though he was in NYC. I interviewed Nate a year ago in Chicago as he was promoting “The Secret Life of Bees” and I had a chance to meet him at the NYC premiere of “The Great Debaters”. Found out he and Ike were college buddies sometime thereafter. This is our first time bringing all those tie-ins together as Ike insisted they keep me entertained for a spell during my lonely L.A. blues. And boy did they all put a smile on my face!

 

And for part three of my night, I went to The Church where ?uestlove waxed all things Mi-Jac (Happy BDAY MJ)! (www.walktalkin.com). My girl Zabrina hipped me to that joint. And what a celebration that was! Plus, I hear Michael’s godkid Evan Ross celebrated his 21^st birthday in L.A. the night prior. It took place at "Guys & Dolls" in L.A. Mom Diana reigned supreme (of course). Evan's sisters Tracee and Chudney came along as well as brother Ross. A Mi-Jac megamix reportedly played in honor of Michael who Evan claims was working on some music with him in the studio. (Can't wait to hear what this most prolific actor gives in the music department. Chip off the old block, one might say, coupled with an "angel" - or two - from above... not to mention the 'earth angel' right by his side. 

 

By the way, speaking of MJ, I had a Harvey Levin run-in around Hollywood. And it didn’t take the paparazzi or TMZ for me to spot him.

 

And Sunday, I finally got to see my Tony and Scott (Ed too… but he had come out to play for “Mahogany”). We went to the Abbey and it was quite the place to see and be seen. I ran into NYC buddies Chris and Jared plus new L.A. buddy Joey and the man with the most – lashes - Ja'Maal Buster ('eyelash guru to the stars'): www.jamaalbuster.com. I even got a glimpse of Patrik Ian-Polk and Tyra's glam squad quy, friend Valente (in town to beat Tyra's face for her Daytime Emmy.: But way EXCITED to hang with Tony, Scott, and Ed again (my boyz).

 

I also got to hang out with my Morehouse bro Redic at his art gallery ("Images of you!"). He too is a singer/songwriter; fashion designer; and all-around Renaissance man. Shout out to Spelman sis Tia as well. Low-key, creative, and inspired night with lots more to report come September when he introduces his brand to the world.

 

My buddy Delandis invited me to attend his birthday dinner at 'Sushi Dan on Sunset'. My money is funny, but he told me to come anyway. From a solid career foundation in local TV news to current, on-going freelance projects in New York City, Patrick L. Riley is one of New York’s hottest talents. His credentials as a producer are impressive: Good Day Atlanta, Rivera Live!, and others. Over the years, he has collaborated heavily with NBC, BET, I-STYLE TV.COM, CROSSWALKS TV, LEVI'S, and HBO.

As a freelance producer, certain assignments have placed him across from President Bill Clinton, Quincy Jones, Bill Cosby, Mary Tyler Moore, Penelope Cruz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Dr. Maya Angelou, Chris Rock, Beyonce, P. Diddy, Alicia Keys, Moby, Luther Vandross, etc. And for HBO, he has interviewed the likes of Michael Douglas, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Morgan Freeman, etc.

With that said, it is clear that fashion and appearance are important to Riley. He wears Kenneth Cole (head-to-toe); Donna Karan; Armani and Rene Lezard --- all of whom offer simple and classic pieces that work in many ways. Riley also throws in some “look-for-less” pieces from THE GAP and H&M. He also wears lesser known designers of color who do great work such as Moshood and Belasse.

In TV, Riley must look authoritative, but have the freedom to display it with colour, flamboyance and pizzazz without being a distraction. So, on any given day, you may see him wearing a sports coat or suit jacket by Rene Lezard or Donna Karan, but beneath it a crisp, white Emmanuelle Ungaro tuxedo shirt or perhaps a fitted and ribbed-turtleneck with geometric designs from GAP, H&M, Armani or Kenneth Cole.

“For the weekend, I love to be comfortable, but still stylish. Moshood has a line of T-shirts and patchwork-pants (drawstring) that accommodate that dichotomy”, says Riley. “Also, in the summer, tanks from H&M and GAP keep me going. In the winter, simple turtlenecks from H&M and GAP accent a leather jacket and some jeans just fine. And those Kenneth Cole jeans and sneakers go with me through the week and on the weekend.”

Riley is free with good advice for men with their own fashion needs. He says, “ I think it’s important for men on the rise in the business world to know the rules and be prepared to play them. One should be armored with a black/blue suit; crisp, white shirt; pressed tie; solid belt; shined shoes; etc.). That said, I think it’s important for men on the rise to simultaneously know themselves and where their spirit is going. And from there, they might find creative ways to express that in their wardrobe. My business, of course, allows for that expression.”

 

My friend Stephen Beasley about whom I’ve blogged a time or trillion partnered with some amazing organizations to enhance his next music launch. A charity GLOBAL SOLES made the event a Drop-Off Site for people to donate new shoes to kids around the world. Torie Wiggins, whose South in the City treats are all but taking over Brooklyn, served up some goodies alongside our girl Marcia Pendelton who gave away free theatre tickets through her company Walk Tall Girl Productions.This event was his trial for the format of his next live recording which will happen this winter… and will be a Bazaar called "Cornucopia" at this amazing place called Littlefield, which is fully equipped to record his album live. Well, the film on which Kodjoe was working before his untimely passing will see the light of day - screening in NYC and L.A.  It’s titled "Why Us? Left Behind and Dying", about a group of inner-city African-American teenagers discovering why HIV rates are so high in black communities. The director Claudia Pryor (also Kodjoe’s dear friend) wants you to know about this project which premieres in Los Angeles and New York City (www.diversityfilms.org/). Oh! If I could be two (or even more) places at one time. Or if I could just be present with what is and where I am – in the moment. Instead, I’m managing my five weeks in ATL while looking ahead feverishly to where I’ll lay my head for low-or-no cost while in L.A. on an assignment through October. But there are two welcome short spells in NYC – one work-related; and one slight hiatus [READ: just enough time to switch out my drawers] before I hit Tampa for a week (NABJ Convention - www.nabj.org) followed by that aforementioned two months in L.A. And notwithstanding a couple of beloved sponsors (and the payroll that will only roll out week-by-week and has me catching up on arrears), I have to ensure I can bankroll travel and hotel incidentals; meals; and the many bills before me. WHEW!!!! HEADY and WEIGHTY stuff... and - TRUTH BE TOLD - it feels OVERWHELMING sometimes. But unlike the Whitney of the past on which current Whitney reflects, "I (DO) know my own strength!!!!" Oh! And inside all of that, Ant and I must maintain as best a connection/communication as possible with our mutually demanding, respective schedules – especially my around-the-clock demands - that make catch-up time virtually impossible. Some days are better than others for me when we can't speak. Other times, I wile out from the loneliness and the distance. And though he's less a complainer and more apt to just accept it as it is (in those moments) than I am, I know it's rough for him too. But we will get it in – hopefully with several visits in whichever aforementioned location. ACCEPTING ALL PRAYER, MY PEEPS because it is ALL MORE THAN A NOTION!!!!! And I know you understand for whatever your challenges may be. But I had to get that off my chest. THANKS FOR LISTENING...

SO, since touching down in Atlanta, I have hit the ground running with my latest project (which like my first ATL project will premiere on BET – the former August 25^th; the latter October 27^th) – Details later when I can actually talk about it. But it's reality TV - a new frontier for me!!!! Long shooting days have kept me creatively and physically busy – even exhausted, but grateful for a meantime revenue stream. And Ant has been working mad hours in NYC as “The Wendy Williams Show” (www.wendyshow.com/) has finally premiered on FOX affiliates nationwide (and BET). Her first guest was our Vanessa Williams (www.vanessawilliams.com/) whose mother "Gaga" (Helen) is likely the show's biggest fan (Loves her some Ant too).

(Too, Ant’s been hitting some hot sets and holding it down on our behalf – including the 20^th Anniversary of “Do The Right Thing” screening and after party - www.amazon.com/Do-Right-Thing...Anniversary/.../B0024EWP6W) as well as a screening of independent film “Ink”, a spiritual thriller about the power of destiny that some of his Denver folks produced.

 

My home away from home – this go around – is (again) the TWELVE Hotel in Atlantic Station (www.TwelveHotels.com). My neighbors happen to be the cast of Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married 2?” (www.tylerperry.com). Well, at least some of them are staying here. Hot off of seeing and hanging out with her twin sister Sidra in L.A., I stumbled into Tasha Smith with whom Ant and I hung out at the premiere of the original flick. Malik Yoba is in the house as well as Sharon Leal. When we checked in, Janet Jackson was – of course – with her family in L.A. (and may I say what a wonderful send-off to Michael Jackson at his memorial. So touching! Such honor! So much LOVE!). I was also excited to find that my college buddy Danni was staying here as she was working on one of BET’s new game shows “Pay It Off” which my friend Kim Coles is hosting (www.bet.com). And her now-grown daughter Le-Le is now married and was visiting Danni in Atlanta along with her husband Jason and another dear friend. It’s been 14 years since I’ve seen Danni and Le-Le. What a great reunion that was!!!

 

I also got to spend time with my “Original Amazing Grace”, best friend Natalie who is a very busy career woman/mother/wife. But she took some time to take me to my favorite restaurant Houston’s (www.hillstone.com). Another time she came and rescued me from a fast-moving depression and talked me lovingly through some challenges. And my Nichole, who is again here in Atlanta with me for this leg, came out to say HI. Of course, I had to capture it.

 

And though I missed Beyonce this go around as scheduling didn’t allow (though tickets came through), Ant and I will always have Manila where she serenaded me Happy Birthday! I too had to miss “The Wiz” with my friend LaChanze but Ant and our friends Ern, Patrice, Keron, and Kimberly went… and had a blast I hear. Of course, “The Wiz” has been on everyone’s minds with the passing of Michael Jackson. I can’t stop playing this clip of MJ and DR on her 1981 special: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BfvzaSxkSY. In fact, while at soul food joint “Mrs. Bs on 4^th” in Birmingham (on a day shoot), I stumbled into a little boy named Tarek who insists he is the next Michael Jackson who some years ago told the boy how talented he was.

 

Speaking of Diana (Aren’t I always? LOL!): Remember “American Idol” Taylor Hicks? Well, he’s remade a song my Diana recorded on her 1991 “Force Behind The Power” CD. The sounds of Diana Ross (some remixes from the aforementioned project) and Jennifer Holliday were piping through the speakers at “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Dwight’s home for the 4^th of July. My friend Lamoh invited me to join him for the festive celebration. (I know Dwight via my ‘platonic boo’ Carl Nelson). Dwight was ever the gracious host – piling me a plate to go plus a bottle of wine. Truly a class act all around, I look forward to seeing the new season of the show. Afterwards, Lamoh and I hit a set in Douglasville. Another night, we hung out at Tapas Restaurant Eros (www.erostapas.com), which turns into quite the disco scene. We also did a stint at “Harlem Bar” (www.harlembaratlanta.com).

 

You recall, my friend Greg and I met with Ryan of designer firm Hugh Simms (www.hughsimms.com). Well, I sported the “Gentlemen Johnny” for a Sunday at the Intercontinental Buckhead (www.ichotelsgroup.com). Well, you can now find these looks in high-end department store Segal’s (www.fredsegal.com).

 

As small world’s go, remember I mentioned how Ant is booking opera burlesque diva “Black Betty” at The Velvet Lounge in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (www.velvetbrooklyn.com/). Well, it turns out an audio guy and friend with whom I work sometimes, Khalif, is her longtime friend and manager. Khalif is here in Atlanta where we uncovered this small-world tidbit.  Meanwhile, my Morehouse brother and friend Khalid is in town on business and we’ve had the chance to hang out a little. He’s here cutting some deals for a couple of animation projects. And he was featured in an image on the cover of a recent issue of Black MBA Magazine (www.blackmbaonline.com/).

 

And I attended V103’s Car & Bike Show (www.v-103.com/) which featured many and plenty from Atlanta’s entertainment scene – including The Dream, Christina Milian, Bustah Rhymes, Chilli, ‘Housewives’ Kandi & Sheree, Outkast’s Big Boi, and ‘the legendary’ Miss Sophia - the only one with whom I got a picture as I was working and staying focused. But my colleague Steve insisted I get this one.

 

My assignment here wraps July 29^th at which time I will return to NYC for a week before heading to Tampa, then L.A. for two months. But this weekend, I am scheduled to hit NYC for a couple of days (on assignment). Will be great to take in The Big Apple (and see Ant), if only for a night or two. Reminds me of this night in the mid-90s when my college mates Z, Cassandra, and I were getting our feet wet in New York City (along with this fabulous shirt that I must find and remix: It's vintage now! LOL!).
