PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!
Patrick L. Riley

ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT

These past couple of weeks, we’ve had some great times at ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT. TICHINA ARNOLD came by last week. She is in town co-starring in “Love, Loss, and What I Wore” at The Westside Theater. After her debut night, she came by and sang a couple of quick ditties along with inspiring folks to keep their pulse on politics!!!! This, before we enjoyed an after set at Sidra’s place – allowing us to download on all things “Martin”; “Everybody Hates Chris”; and pop culture. THANKS TICHINA!!! The week prior, my buddy Ed Roebuck invited R&B DIVA Alyson Williams who does a wonderful Tuesday night set at Ashford & Simpson’s “Sugar Bar”. She agreed to join me on a number: “Our Love” by Natalie Cole (WHAT A HIGHLIGHT! THANKS ALYSON who – FYI - I’ve interviewed before for “…the Life of Riley…” blog: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/3/28/love-is-in-control-finger-on-the-trigger.html!) And so many of my friends – old and new – have been coming out to support – including Tracy (left), a breast cancer survivor. I actually met Tracy through Sid at a table reading. I introduced her to my Mara Schiavocampo who was inspired to do a story on Tracy for NBC (http://www.thegrio.com/health/filmmaker-shares-struggle-of-3-generations-of-breast-cancer.php). DON'T WE LOVE SYNERGY?

LOVE, LOSS & WHAT I WORE

By the way, y’all: PLEASE GO OUT AND SUPPORT TICHINA in this show LOVE, LOSS & WHAT I WORE which she’s only doing for a month! SHE IS SUCH A TALENT! Check out the website for tickets and more information! www.lovelossonstage.com).

MCRIB

I am often invited to big film premieres, wine tastings, and restaurant openings here in New York City. I convinced my girlfriend Sidra to join me at an event that was held at the Times Square McDonald’s (www.McDonalds.com/McRib). The occasion: The return of the McRib (back in restaurants nationwide as a limited promotion running November 2 through November 22). I’d tried it when it first came on the scene back in the ‘80s when I was a tween. Over the years, I’ve seen it on the menu in select locations throughout America, but never re-ordered it as an adult… until last night. McDonald’s USAs Director of Social Media Rick Wion (www.twitter.com/rdublife) invited me out to re-experience the boneless, seasoned pork patty that is dressed with fresh slivered onions, two dill pickle slices, plenty of BBQ sauce, and is served on a toasted, golden-brown home-style roll. I liked it well enough, but not as much as The Ultimate McRib Fans (who were in attendance at the well-appointed affair – including Joey Erwin from Simpsonville, SC, self-described as “Mr. McRib”). Also in attendance: John Resig, co-owner and President of www.theCHIVE.com and www.theBERRY.com. Also, John portrays Deputy Kevin Ellis in one of Sid’s favorite shows and HBO’s hit vampire drama “True Blood”.

KATY PERRY

BIG THANKS to my Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts (and LIVE! FROM FRONT ROW - www.Youtube.com/LiveFromFrontRow). I got to tag along for “Windows Phone Presents: KATY PERRY” at Roseland Ballroom… “… AND I LIKED IT!” I LOVE KATY… and her show – inclusive of ALL of her HITS - was SPECTACULAR! Then, en route home, I enjoyed a wonderful night of food, wine, and conversation at friend/jewelry designer Trevor Hartman’s place. When he noticed my LOVE of ALBUM COVERS, he gave me an early BDAY gift: “1001 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE” (UNIVERSE). THIS RAINY DAY & MONDAY HAPPENED TO BRING ME UP!

RACHEL DAY (IN THE LIFE OF RILEY)

Shout out to my boy Caleb for asking me to direct/field produce a pilot project that stars the talented Rachel Day. Rachel incidentally is one of the models we used on the pilot project I host (still-in-post-production... and Caleb is helping us with that one as well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIlY3ysEN0k&feature=email). My girl Sidra worked with me, which made for a smooth shoot (Thanks Sid!) and our Philly-based crew held us all up brilliantly. And our subject, accessories designer Nicole Romano (www.nicoleromano.com) was a dream along with her team – including Gabby and Megan (who works in her boutique that is housed at The Plaza Hotel). Ant and I also got to hang out with Caleb recently in Manhattan. Good food. Good drink. A little window shopping! CONGRATS RACHEL!

“THE FASHION SHOW” STARRING JEFFREY WILLIAMS

My Amazing Grace Nichole; our friend Michelle; and I went to the Grand Premiere of “The Fashion Show” starring Iman and Isaac Mizrahi. Though I have met and interviewed Iman before, my reason for supporting this effort is: Jeffrey Williams, my friend and Nichole’s cousin whose name we always knew would be in lights. Jeffrey is one of the fashion designer contestants. CONGRATS JEFFREY! YOU ARE SAFE…this week... and we will be watching you every Tuesday night at 10pm on BRAVO! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

OGILVYCULTURE

Sidra invited Toby and me to join her at Ogilvy & Mather for an introduction to OgilvyCULTURE - a cross-cultural, strategic movement that promises to change how Madison Avenue demographically targets its marketing efforts. The reception and presentation – led by marketing strategist Jeffrey Bowman - were presented to a room full of NYC tastemakers – including “Soul Food”s Bird, Malinda Williams; Miss Bevy Smith; Dee Marshall; Rachel Noerdlinger; Pam Pickens; and a host of others.

TWEENS AND TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS, OH MY!

As I prepare to turn 40, I guess I’m maintaining my joie de vivre by hanging out with the young’ns. Recently, I went to my 13-year-old buddy Zach’s karaoke party at my spot One 7. He asked where he could throw a karaoke set. So, I sent him to my karaoke mecca. And we had a BLAST, but most importantly, Zach had a GREAT TIME!Then, I went to the Hampton Inn to speak to communications and journalism students from my buddy Scott’s alma mater Norfolk State University. They were in NYC for a media tour. I even met - for the first time - the son of my dear friend Sheila Eldridge - awesome publicist and entertainment manager (2nd from right in next pic). Sheila helped me snag an exclusive interview with the 'Funky Divas' En Vogue in 1994 when I was starting out in my career with "Good Day Atlanta". Over the years, she's always mentioned her son. "Jersey" - he calls himself - is getting ready to break into the business by way of the caring folks at Norfolk State U. Look out for him! Also, we invited the impressive bunch of media and journalism scholars to join us for Ant’s co-worker Yaz’s birthday party at Hudson Eatery. Thanks to all of my friends who shared their career testimonials with the young folks who are shaping their professional lives.

GLO-TV

If you haven't checked it out already, see the first Urban LGBT network GLO-TV's 2nd installment of "The Gayest ISH Ever". I still behave (sprinkled throughout - commenting on just a few of the topics). But my fellow pop culture analysts don't necessarily have my filters - to often FUNNY EFFECT! PLEASE tune in and SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiqr80HL4y4

MY LISA

Had a GREAT SUNDAY last weekend with my dearest of friends Ern, Tata, Kim, and – of course – Ant. We took a road trip to DC/Maryland to attend a baby shower for my former NJ BFF (but still BFF from the distance) Lisa Goodnight-Sturdivant. That’s right! She’s married now… and they are expecting a baby by year’s end. TIMPANO CHOPHOUSE in Rockville, MD was the well-appointed and elegant backdrop – including the MOST DELICIOUS crab cakes along with other hearty dishes and wine. Was GREAT to see Lisa and her husband Lex along with her parents, his parents, their other family members, and the many friends we have in common. WHAT A JOYFUL ROOM! I laughed so much, my belly hurts! CONGRATULATIONS, my babies!

"...FOR COLORED GIRLS, BOYS, AND ALL THE CHILDREN..."

FOR COLORED GIRLS

Have seen “For Colored Girls” twice now. It’s Tyler Perry’s upcoming film which marries the classic-Ntozake-Shange poem (circa 1974) with something like “Crash” to AMAZING EFFECT! Kudos to Janet Jackson and the rest of this AMAZING CAST - including Loretta Devine; Kimberly Elise; Thandie Newton; Phylicia Rashad; Anika Noni-Rose; Kerry Washington; Macy Gray; and Whoopi Goldberg who clearly reminded everyone not to get it twisted. More than a “View” host, “I am an Academy-Award-winning actress, dammit!” (My thought). And many others may be up for the golden prize – including Mr. Perry for his stellar craftsmanship in adapting this classic, Obie-and-Tony-award-winning choreo-poem (by Ntozake Shange) into an AWESOME cinematic treasure. It’s deep – even heavy. But what a ride!

Now, you know Janet is Ant's girl. And he's had several chances to be an intimate audience with Miss Jackson. Me too. At "Why Did I Get Married?" premieres (both). And some other places, too. But the excitement never wears off for him. And as I LOVE JANET too, I get as excited. (NOTE: MISS ROSS?? I'M READY FOR MY CLOSE-UP... WITH YOU!!!! LOL!).

One way here in NYC that we got to celebrate: Tim Palen’s “FOR COLORED GIRLS: Living Portraits - Opening Night Reception Hosted by Janet Jackson” at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery. Miss Jackson – who I’ve interviewed before and with whom I have chatted socially – received us warmly. She was very present and always seems to remember me. Some of her co-stars were also in the house – including Loretta Devine; Kimberly Elise; Thandie Newton; friend Anika Noni Rose; Kerry Washington; Khalil Kain; and Tessa Thompson.  And Ntozake Shange, the original writer of the award-winning choreopoem “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf” (on which Tyler Perry adapted his film), also attended along my other industry friends and associates Phillip Bloch (Current book: “The Shopping Diet: Spend Less and Get More”); Star Jones (“Celebrity Apprentice”); and the “Precious” film director Lee Daniels; Bruce with Sheridan radio; and my girls from Red Sea Entertainment, Miss Anna and Miss Tagan – both of whom are absolutely THE BEST!

The World Premiere of “For Colored Girls…” took place last night at The Ziegfeld Theater. Sid, Ant, Michael, Mario, and a host of others enjoyed yet another night with Miss Jackson and the amazing cast of talented women and men (including my homeboy, Savannah’s own Omari Hardwick, who played opposite Miss Jackson). Afterwards, a virtual WHO’S WHO poured into The Oak Room at The Plaza Hotel – including my buddy, ABC 7’s Sandra Bookman; my CJ; BET’s Ed Gordon; Janet’s nephew Austin Brown (only boy of her oldest sister Rebbie. His album ‘85’ is scheduled to be released in 2011 – www.austinbrown.com); our Ledisi; America’s Next Top Model’s Ya-Ya; Miss Niecy Nash; my Bridget, Karu, Kevin-Anthony, and on and on, I could go. GREAT NIGHT!

CONGRATS TO EVERYBODY!

ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS

I got to work on something with Jon Stewart on one of my All-Star Karaoke Thursday Nights. But he got me out in time to get to my Thursday gig at Native Restaurant on Lenox Avenue @ 118th Street from 9pm-MIDNIGHT. Shout out to my girl Sidra who – one week - filled in on the ONE-TWOs when Ant was under the weather. And THANKS to the many, many ALL-STARs who keep coming out - from near and far.Last week’s LOVE FEST included some INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR. My dear friend, soul music historian, journalist, author, founder of Soul Music.com, singer, and record producer David Nathan (and his alter ego “Nefer Davis”) came from the U-K for Dionne Warwick’s 50th Anniversary and – with his friends in tow – he came to sing for my night. From Dionne’s “Alfie” to Aretha’s “Think” (and a Coldplay number), he ROCK’d (and SOUL’d!). Another friend, singer/songwriter Anise White (www.iamanise.com) blew the roof off the place with Lisa Stansfield’s “Been Around The World”. And our ALL-STAR regulars showed up and out i.e. Brian, Rick, Troy, Anthony, Turquoise, Jasmine, etc. Plus, “The Professor” gave us a great harmonica solo in the wake of his recent Apollo appearance… and friend Mica (whose working on some new music in the studio) popped by and gave us a serving of her fab brand of pop. And my ALL-STAR friends came out in full-force – including Sidra, Craig, Nichole (with new friend Eva from Dallas), Toby, glam god Q, Jacquie Lee (with client CJ Miller. He is author [“Grind: How to Turn Your Coffee Break into your Big Break”]/motivational speaker/reality co-star [Tyra Banks’ “True Beauty” & Omarosa’s “Ultimate Merger”]; my Kim (and her posse – all from Oakland and other Bay Area spots); Harlem promoter Bill Foster; my “girl” Cynthia Burgos – artist extraordinaire whose work of acrylic, oil, sand, and glitter portrays the iconic Oprah inside an exhibit, "25 Years of Oprah," that is presented by the New York African American Historical Society. It is showing in the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building in Harlem until November 24 (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/10/12/2010-10-12_night_at_the_oprah_harlem_toasts_talk_queen.html). My girl Flo Anthony was also in the house. HEY FLO! THANKS TO ALL!!! And I want to see you folks at ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS! We are having a BLAST!

HARLEM CRAWL

DIANA ROSS PLAYGROUND

Our girlfriend Sidra invited us to Manolito for Sunday brunch recently.

Turns out the owner Cristina was hired by my idol Diana Ross to be nanny to her - at the time - three children Rhonda, Tracee, and Chudney (circa 1983). Though she spoke diplomatically as someone who likely signed a confidentiality agreement, she did confirm what was going on professionally with Miss Ross at that time. Of course, I gave her the options. After Motown 25?

Before Central Park? While she was on the road with the "For One, For All" tour? Were Arthur - the driver, and Geneva - the cook, on staff at the time? It all begged the question: "How do I know all of this stuff? LOL!" The lovely chat inspired information about The Diana Ross Playground - the beneficiary from Diana's pockets and whatever proceeds came from the sale of merch at her FREE Central Park concerts.

Sid didn't know that there was a Diana Ross Playground - so we took her.

All of us – including Murphy – walked through Central Park to the Diana Ross Playground - partially via bike.

We even walked by The Dalton School where the Ross charges attended school here in Manhattan alongside many of the rich and famous offspring.

And we HAD FUN (AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN)... just like little children. THANKS to MISS ROSS for a playground that I'm certain has brought JOY to millions of kids. And some adults too! LOL!

Then, we enjoyed a nice dinner & hang at Murphy’s Harlem pad.

Friends Carl, Nicole, and others joined us.

GREAT SUNDAY!

On another Sunday, we finally got to see Daniel Beaty's "THROUGH THE NIGHT" with our Andrea and Ike in tow. Great work!

ALVIN & FRIENDS – INCLUDING RUBY DEE & "REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DC"S PAUL WHARTON

Had a great evening in New Rochelle where my highlight for the night was spending some time with special guest, Academy-Award nominee Ruby Dee. Our New ROs Michelle & Nelson – the Boyces - invited us to the opening of “Alvin & Friends”, a southern and Caribbean contemporary bistro in New Rochelle. Its Executive Chef is Raymond Jackson, formerly of Maroon’s. Its owner Alvin Clayton is best known as an artist (Denzel Washington, Robert DeNiro and Don Cheadle own his work) and model (L.L. Bean catalogue, most recently). “Real Housewives of DC”s Paul Wharton – a friend – and my girl Sidra accompanied me. Many were excited to see him as the reality show on which he co-starred was wrapping up. We all commuted – for the first time – via the Metro North. Also, it was great to see my favorite New ROs Nichole and Cynthia. Also, great to see my buddies Will and Joe, two of the best in the business!!!! LOVELY NIGHT IN NEW RO!

INSPIRED BY NATHAN HALE WILLIAMS & CRYSTAL MCCRARY ANTHONY

I was invited to the launch event for “INSPIRED: Iconic African-American Women & Their Inspirations” (at The Studio Museum of Harlem) – co-authored by friends Nathan Hale Williams and Crystal McCrary Anthony. So many great friends were in the house – including Native Restaurant’s Brian (my boss on Thursday for All-Star Karaoke); Miss Jean; Kelli Goff, Jamar, Ryan, Tracy, Adrienne, Patrik-Ian Polk, Olivia, and a host of others. After, we revisited the INSPIRED folks for a night of “Boomerang”. Also, there was R&B music. Both at Native, where Nathan’s “Classic” Tuesday night takes place. This is also where we do ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS! Here our buddies Sidra, Derek, DeJuan, Hal, Erica Watson, and others were in the house. CONGRATS NATHAN & CRYSTAL!

MARK OLDMAN

Friends Donna Torrence and Hanna Lee invited us to attend Mark Oldman’s wine book launch party at Mark’s FAB new NYC apartment. There were numerous wines from all over the world to sip and Chef Michel Nischan cooked up some savory treats. And I got to take a little time to chat with three producers from “The View” – Patrick, Jonathan, and Natalie. Darryl “Dr. Mixologist” Robinson (of “Cooking Channel” fame) was in the house as was my NABJ friend Lola Ogunnaike.

EL DEBARGE, MARY J. BLIGE, & EBONY (CIRCA DIANA ROSS)

El Debarge was in town. We went. Radio City Music Hall is where he performed the soundtrack of my childhood & adolescent years. Afterwards, EBONY’s current cover model Mary J. Blige (channeling one of MISS ROSS’ classic EBONY covers from the ‘70s) headlined. A stop through Washington Heights for karaoke Monday nights before heading home to check in on Nene, Dwight, and the gang! Y’all been watching “Real Housewives of Atlanta”? FIERCE!

CLAUDINE

One night in Harlem, I felt like I might have been in a ‘70s movie. After a day of working from home, I think I stepped into a time capsule. We joined our favorite Harlem couple Mara & Tommie at Moca (including some slamming catfish fingers). Afterwards, Ant got off late to join us for dinner & drinks at Mojo. A birthday girl shared her Chanel and Louboutin cupcakes with us, compliments of Ilene Miriam Baked Goods – www.ilenemiriam.com. Legendary actor Glynn Turman dined at the table for which we had to wait. I followed him out for a quick chat and photo-op. He played Leroy "Preacher" Jackson in “Cooley High” (and – of course – “Dr. War” in “A Different World”. Too, he is Aretha Franklin’s ex-husband). As we segued back to Mara & Tommie’s for a night-cap, we observed one of NYC’s finest sanitation workers macking on an attractive young lady, who too had just dined at Mojo. We observed her give the garbage man her number, which conjured up images of “Claudine” for me. Diahann Carroll was nominated for an Oscar in her portrayal of a mother of six on welfare, who was a part-time maid. She and trash man – a fine & mellow James Earl Jones – manage a romantic threesome between the two fine characters and “Mr. Welfare”. After we looked at a couple of YOU TUBE clips, including Willow’s new hit song, I insisted on sharing “Claudine” with the young folks. It’s a classic, albeit dated, arguably – some might say - stereotypical. Yet like “For Colored Girls…” (which was originally an early ‘70s choreo-poem), the messages are still relevant today. Here’s the first of a series of YOU TUBE clips that comprise one of my favorite childhood movies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L__VjF7JSC0  SO, LADIES!!!??? QUESTION FOR YOU: You're out with friends. Dressed to the NINEs. A garbage man is on his route. He's fine <but of course, he's in uniform>! He likes the way you look as well; chats you up quickly between tossing trash bags on the back f the truck; and he asks for your number. You give it to him. He's go...nna call you later for a date. Some of my lady friends (and a couple of men friends) seem to think I've over-romanticized the moment and that most women would NOT go for a garbage man. That's where the chat about the classic film "CLAUDINE" started. And don't forget 'ROC'. But in real life, WOULD YOU DATE A GARBAGE MAN and/or seriously consider a relationship with one? I say "GO FOR IT!" In the case of this one, he's cute; has a job; and benefits (and seemed to be able to nicely put a sentence or two together). Some of my girlfriends - shockingly to me - said "NO WAY!" WHAT DO YOU SAY?

I’M COMING OUT

Whether you're lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or not, be proud of who you are and your support for LGBT equality this Coming Out Day (or any day… and beyond)! I’ve LIVED OUT LOUD for 15 years now and struggled inside for all the years prior to that. The journey hasn’t been easy, but since COMING OUT and... being TRUE to myself and my loved ones, it’s better out here – professionally and personally. I now dedicate time and resources to LGBT-mentoring/scholarship organization LIVE OUT LOUD (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2010/5/24/go-for-your-dreams-reach-and-their-yours.html); the National Association of Black Journalists’ LGBT Task Force of which I am a founding member; I hosted a well-received (but not picked up) ‘Queer-Eye’- meets-‘The-View’-pilot a few years back (http://216.117.188.141/PRiley/PatrickGeneralReel.wmv); and I speak up whenever asked – including recent appearances on Michael Eric Dyson’s radio show (http://dysonshow.org/?p=1721) and the first Urban LGBT network glo-TV (http://glotvnetwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=109&Itemid=271); and I take part ownership in a particular GLAAD Award for a talk show’s episode titled “When I Knew I Was Gay” (I was on-camera & produced a number of segments for that edition). ONWARD & UPWARD, MY PEOPLE! And the recent string of reported bullying incidents that are leading to these gay suicides MUST STOP! And to the politicians, religious leaders, and pundits who have made careers out of saying that gays are somehow less than, please STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE! – especially if you are engaging in DL activities yourself. And whether STRAIGHT or LGBT, BE THE CHANGE and SPEAK UP! And to those LGBT teens who may be having problems or thoughts of suicide, please visit or call the following website/number: http://thetrevorproject.org/ or call 1-866-4-U-TREVOR. I LOVE YOU ALL! And ONE MORE THING (because many of my yellow brick roads lead back to MISS ROSS): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzpP0KbjHU8

ALL-STAR KARAOKE

ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS at NATIVE RESTAURANT in HARLEM continues to bring FUN TIMES and GREAT SINGING! And in addition to my many friends who are coming out to listen and support, several are getting on the mic.  My friend Charles Wallace – singer/actor/dancer/producer/director/writer extraordinaire - ‘turned off the lights’ (a la Teddy P) and serenaded the house with ‘love ballad’ (a la LTD). Tony nominee Brenda Braxton popped by to help us with our give-aways including her show "Travelin'" which is running in the city. On that week,  we also gave away tix to FELA! w/Patti LaBelle and Daniel Beaty's "Through The Night" as well as two gift cards to N, my favorite boutique. And our regional/city members of the National Association of Black Journalists came out – including NABJ Region 1 Director Katina. And another week, my NABJ sisters – poet Marcie Eanes (whose current collection, “Sensual Sounds”, is available at www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com) and playwright Amy Simmons – came from Racine, Wisconsin and Philadelphia, respectively JUST to get in on the fun and support our new karaoke adventure! THANKS LADIES! And a special shout out to the Bay-area’s own Troy for popping in and our Dawn, who sang really pretty on the night she came! And my birthday-sake Robin Stone Boyd brought a large party of her girlfriends – including Miss Lisa and Carol. And our ALL-STAR regular Darius Booker (who has substitute hosted at No Parking’s Monday night Karaoke); and sbP’s vocalist extraordinaire Stephen Beasley brought their A-game. And Dr. Mixologist Darryl Robinson (who came out to celebrate his birthday and the week thereafter). He asked me to sing “Theme from Mahogany” for his celebration, and – of course – I did. CHEERS, DR. MIXOLOGIST! And THANKS TO ALL for supporting ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS at NATIVE RESTAURANT in Harlem.

SIDRA, KIM COLES, AND NATE BERKUS

After my Sidra supported me at my ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHT, Ant & I returned the favor. For her Friday, in-studio taping at “The Nate Berkus Show”, Sid asked Ant to style her and she asked me to accompany her to the studio where she, our buddy Kim Coles, and Sid’s friend/interior designer Lisa did their segment, which aired recently: http://www.thenateshow.com/episodes/detail/the-house-that-nate-built  She’s already been invited back. Afterwards, Sidra sponsored a fabulous lunch at Tao Restaurant where our server Kevin Sweeney served up salmon, steak, crispy vegetable rolls, banana pudding, and info about the web series “Keeping Up with the Cardassians” (www.keepingupwiththecardassians.net) in which he stars. Then, we took a bus back to Harlem – something new for me. Ristoranti Settepani provided us some wine, sidewalk fellowship, and a host of characters as only Harlem can provide. Then, we segued to New Rochelle. Girlfriend Chenoa and her husband Carlyle invited us out for an elegant, well-appointed dinner party. Many of our favorites were in the house – including my “Amazing Grace” Nichole; Michelle; Nelson; Tracey; Adair; Jason; and others.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARA!

Tillman’s supper club in New York City was the spot to celebrate the birthday of our ‘Amazing Grace’ Mara Schiavocampo, NBC Digital Correspondent. As always, so much fun with Mara’s cast of characters in the mix: her husband Tommie; CNN’s David Puente; and Mara’s protégée Sia Nyorkor who has left NYC to start reporting in Florida. Afterwards: Karaoke Cave for a night cap! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARA!

FELA & PATTI LABELLE

Ant, our friends Robert & Sidra, and I got to join my Morehouse BFFs Michael and Mario for another run of Broadway’s Tony-award-winning FELA! (but this time featuring Patti Labelle). SHE WAS WONDERFUL, but Lillias White was nominated for a Tony for originating the role. This particular day started with brunch at VYNL with friend Theo – another birthday boy (VYNL Scramble! YUM!); then, after a few errands, we enjoyed the show after which we did a little after-set of Ruby Foo’s Times Square sushi and cocktails. SPEAKING OF FELA! My girl Marcia Pendelton booked me to interview lead producer Steve Hendel on Broadway musical FELA! along with two cast members Onika and Farai – all of whom shed light on the life FELA! will have after it closes at the top of 2011 (including a run in London in The West End; filmed version available in DC; filmed version available in Europe; a state-side road tour; and preps for a feature film adaptation). My boys Rod and Marlynn came out. The legendary Melvin Van Peebles was in the house. Marva Hicks and my girl Sidra were also in the house. And a host of others.

LEBLON

After my FELA! duties, I joined Ant for an exclusive seated dinner event at the brand-new SOHO destination LANI KAI cocktail bar – including producers from “The View”; DR. Mixologist Darryl Robinson; and Founder & President of LEBLON (natural cane cachaca-brasil). Our girlfriend Donna Torrence put all of this together. Then, we joined Travis & company at NO PARKING for Monday night karaoke – including two performers from “Naked Boys Singing” and a clothed boy, ME. LOL!

THE BROOKS BUSINESS REPORT

TAKE A LOOK at THE BROOKS BUSINESS REPORT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7EljxSYSSM  The Go To Resource for Women Business Owners. One of my NABJ mentors Sheila Brooks hired me to work on it a year and change ago. I interviewed all of the subjects she didn't (including my girlfriend Dr. Shirley Madhere) and I produced those interviews that Sheila conducted. Excerpts from all are in this clip. GOOD STUFF COMING UP w/THE BROOKS BUSINESS REPORT.

DINNER WITH NOOT

My nephew invited me to dinner (on him) one night. The old Houston’s (now Hillstone) was his choice. SO SWEET OF HIM, RIGHT? And for all of my goings and comings, this – its own – was truly a highlight. We got to catch up on his new job and new digs. And as he navigates through this thing called “adult”-hood, I’m excited to be a listening ear for him (as I – knocking on 40 – am still trying to figure “adult”-hood out). The journey continues… and it’s WONDERFUL! Then, Ant and I popped by Nathan Hale Williams’ “Classic” night at our NATIVE (where we do ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAY NIGHTS).

CHICAGO QUICKIE

So, I wasn’t in Chicago long enough to get homesick, but I did have to go there for business. On Night 2 of 4, after a full day of a writing/editing session, my Ti-Ti insisted I join her at The House of Blues for Michigan Avenue magazine's cover of Jennifer Hudson who brilliantly performed "And I Am Telling You" and "I Will Always Love You" bombastic-like (yet inside her new-Naomi-Campbell body). Also ran into NYC buddy Waddie. And one of my work buddies Joe was there too. Always an adventure with Ti-Ti, even though I didn't get my photo op with J-Hud (There's always a file photo. LOL!!!! Thanks boo! Then, on Night 3 of 4, my best Chicago buddies Eddie and Chicago Carl insisted I give them some fun time. They wanted to get in on my karaoke jones. So, they took me to Blue Frog Bar & Grill - so they could see what the hype is all about. Not only were they sold with my performances, but they jumped up and joined in on Hall & Oates' "Sara Smile" which Eddie led brilliantly (GO EDDIE!). Unfortunately, after a late-night bite at Dublin's Restaurant, Eddie's towed car left a bad taste in our night. STILL, we'll always have memories of our fun-filled, musical night in Chicago.

EL DEBARGE

Well, you know I am close friends with the first cousins of the Debarges: my Sherry & Shelly. Yes! They're twins! As a result, Chico has accepted me as family. And since Sherry and Shelly introduced us, we hit it off. Plus, I've volunteered my 'falsetto' services to the background of any of his dates. And we've bumped into each other a time or two right here in New York City. The ladies vouch for me. And recently in San Diego, El did the like. I was invited to an intimate set that El performed at SOBs last week, but wasn’t able to make it for my business in Chicago (I will see him on Monday when he opens for Mary J. Blige at Radio City Music Hall). With that, my Morehouse BFF Michael K. Watts was in the house by way of LIVE! FROM FRONT ROW and he’s letting me share his review and clips with you here. ENJOY!

The LIVE! Review:

El DeBarge's 'Second Chance' With Fans on Memory Lane

By Michael K. Watts

El DeBarge danced to the salsa-infused beat of "Rhythm of the Night" at the close of his S.O.B.'s show in New York last night.  A sea of fans cheered him on as his hip-shaking salsa morphed into an almost holy dance.  If the playful bounce in his swift steps were any indication, he had reason to let loose and celebrate.

It was just under two years ago that the soulful singer, an R&B mainstay in the 1980's as front man to his group of singing siblings as DeBarge, finished a prison sentence for drug possession.  A lengthy battle with drugs and the law sidelined his career for well over a decade.

DeBarge says he's been clean for two years and wants a chance to prove himself again.  With a new record deal and a forthcoming album, Second Chance, the singer is restarting his career.

Last night's intimate show, one of a handful of spot dates this fall, was a chance to reconnect with his fans, whose loyalty showed in their incessant screams.  When he entered the stage, DeBarge seemed to freeze with distraction as he sat at the keyboard and grinned through the thunderous cheers.  He fumbled through the first verse of "Stay With Me," but nobody seemed to mind.

Cameras flashed about the stage as DeBarge took fans down memory lane with number one hits like "All This Love" and "Time Will Reveal."  It was like 1983 all over again as he worked the crowd and led them in nostalgic sing-along's.

"Can I reach out and touch you just like that," he sang melodically.  And fans his screamed some more.  "It's all about love," he crooned.

His signature falsetto remains in virtually the same condition as in his younger years.  So does his boyish smile.  Perspiration glistened on the youthful skin of his forehead, but he was just warming up.

NABJ A&E TASK FORCE LEGACY AWARD RECIPIENT CLARENCE WALDRON

SHOUT OUT TO NABJ A&E Task Force Legacy Award Recipient Clarence Waldron. We had the chance to present him a video when the task force, which I Chair, honored him at our Y&R-sponsored reception in San Diego at NABJ. See the tribute video here: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/video/video.php?v=1585721932503

ALBERTINA WALKER

You know, I grew up on Gospel music and still consider it one of my favorite genres. Well, we lost one of our pioneers this week: ALBERTINA WALKER. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard her voice blasting throughout my childhood homes. A TRUE LIVING LEGEND! R.I.P.

FAITH AS FLORENCE BALLARD

SHOUT OUT TO BRILLIANT CASTING! I didn’t know that a bio-pic was being worked on about original Supreme Florence Ballard (left). She is the inspiration for all-things-Effie-White from ‘Dreamgirls’. Unfortunately, Florence died on welfare in the mid-‘70s and would never have the chance to re-claim the spotlight as Effie White did. Well, one of my favorite r&b/hip-hop divas Faith Evans says she has landed the role of Florence Ballard in this project. This news comes while Faith is out promoting her  new CD “Something About Faith”.  GO FAITH! (I had the chance to play a cop in her debut video “You Used To Love Me” – quite the exciting opportunity made possible by my friend Tracey Moore, a casting director at the time who has now added director/producer/writer to her multi-hyphenated brand in addition to acting teacher/coach a la “The Spirited Actor” acting courses). And I LOVE Faith's new song!

"... FOR A DAY OR MAYBE FOR A LIFETIME..."

KARAOKE

Every Thursday, I am hosting ALL-STAR KARAOKE at NATIVE RESTAURANT in Harlem U.S.A. (118th Street at Lenox). And may I just say that we have been HAVING A BLAST! A couple of weeks ago, my favorite boutique N threw a launch party for our new weekly fun-time (www.nharlemnewyork.com/). This week, we’ll have some special giveaways from N and the Broadway and Off-Broadway shows I’ll be referencing later on in the blog. PR expert Alicia Evans popped by one Thursday and took the roof off of the place with her special rendition of “Home”. And “Black 2: Broadway”s own Kevin-Anthony popped back by for an encore presentation. Also, SHOUT OUT to Travis Greisler (www.travisgreisler.com) – host of NO PARKING’s MONDAY NIGHT KARAOKE, which I have gone out to support since it started. LOVE YOUR KARAOKE NIGHT, TRAVIS... and YOU BETTA SING!!! Another week, my girl Loren Lillian – actress and TV/film editor with the most – came out and showed that she can put a little something behind a song, too! And BET’s own Kai Brown popped by to let me join her on “Be A Lion” from “The Wiz”. One of our fierce guests, Miss Fern, invited me to join her on Mary Mary’s “Yesterday”. Caught me off guard, but as usual, I jumped in head first… and I think we took NATIVE to CHURCH!!! LOL! And of course, my Sidra; my Nichole; my Mario; and all of my other buddies have been rolling through to support. I LOVE MY FRIENDS!. My nephew even popped by and brought his Spelman sister Emaan and Morehouse brother Harrison for the ride. TOMORROW, we are expecting my NYC-area friends from the National Association of Black Journalists to come out – including NABJ Region 1 Director Katina Revels. PLEASE COME OUT and JOIN US!

URBAN WORLD FILM FESTIVAL

I had a chance to do some promotion for the Urban World Film Festival this year: http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2010/9/10/attend-the-annual-2010-urbanworld-film-festival-in-nyc-sept.html.  Aforementioned Loren Lillian was featured in two films at UWFF: “The Truth About Lies” and “Grace”.On Friday night of Urban World, Sidra, Ant, and I did a date night to see a gritty and tense crime drama titled “SUS” – starring Sid’s buddy Clint Dyer with whom we got to spend some quality time – before his film and afterwards as we rolled by one of UWFF’s after parties at The Empire Room. Then, with Clint; our friend Sidra; and new friend Sophia in tow, we stepped to One 7 for karaoke where Miss Sophia joined in on all of the “sangin’” fun! She truly is one to watch... and promises to pop by my ALL-STAR KARAOKE THURSDAYs at NATIVE RESTAURANT in Harlem! CONGRATS, CLINT!

FASHION WEEK – PART ONE

Fashion Week in New York City is always a circus! This year was no exception. My friend Ron Smith insisted I come out and play. On the publicity tip, he represents Romas by Linda Rowe Thomas – a courageous burn victim whose sense of style is on fire. Her FABULOUS show at Skylight West featured her Spring 2011 line and it all underscored her resillience and amazing creative vision. Her models included  “America’s Next Top Model”s Veronda; and “Real Housewives of NY”s Alex.  In attendance, my buddy Mario; creative director Mykel; my dear friend Tracey Moore; “Bernie Mac”s own Kellita Smith (who is such a joy, I had to see her one more time. Plus, she wanted to join us for ALL-STAR KARAOKE, but scheduling didn't allow. NEXT TIME, KELLITA!!!! XO); fine artist Stanley Carr Jr.; and a host of others. Afterwards, Mykel; Toyce; my Mario; and I enjoyed a lite bite at T.S. Ma Asian Cuisine & Sushi Bar. Then, Ant & I joined my platonic boo Carl and others. The event?Indashio’s 2011 Collection at the Metropolitan Pavillion – starring Amber Rose (of Kanye West-fame); and ANTM's Caridee; and Jasline. Diddy’s mom Janice was in the house! I met – for the first time – THE FABULOUS Tracey Ferguson (of “Jones Magazine” fame and CENTRIC’s “Keeping up with the Joneses”) – close friends with my favorite twins Sherry & Shelly Mcadoo. She was so sweet and invited us to her magazine’s event the following night! CONGRATS, INDASHIO!

FASHION WEEK – PART TWO (“KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES’”)

“The Jones Awards” took place at Ant’s and my hip-hop-dance-class digs, Alvin Ailey.

This signature event is for Jones Magazine a la my buddy L. Londell McMillan (Publisher of The North Star Group) and Editor-in-Chief, my new friend Tracey Ferguson.

The WHO'S WHO were in the house - including honorees Sam Fine and Byron Lars;

presenters/performers Miss Sheryl Lee Ralph who is getting ready to host her 20th Anniversary of “DIVAS: Simply Singing” – the longest-running AIDS benefit in town;

my Spelman sister Tai Beauchamp; and a host of my peeps - including my Spelman sister Bridget Bland (and friends);

glo-TVs Maurice Jamal, Richard, and George;

filmmaker Marlene Rhein (who directed Tupac's last video "All About You" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXtYNH0CQJo);

my girls Laura and Linda who I love so much.

We've been friends for a long time - having attended a number of weddings; funerals; book club meetings; parties; dinners; showers; and special events - between us - over the years.

 SHOUT OUT to Linda Gadsby, Esq. named one of Diversity MBA Magazine's Top 100 Executives Under 50;

She received it in Chicago and I happened to be in town, but leaving to come back while she was just getting there. CONGRATS, LINDA!); former Zhane singer Renee who promises some new music that she hopes we will love; BET's Kai Brown and Michaela angela Davis; buddies BJ Coleman; Oscar James; and Nathan Hale Williams; Harriette Cole; and make-up artist Travis Culberson. AND SO MANY MORE -                                                            -including Tatyana Ali and blogger Renae Bluitt who covered the evening on her "In Her Shoes" blog (http://www.inhershoesblog.com).

 GLO-TV

Speaking of my glo-TV buddies Maurice, Richard, and George… they just spent some time at The White House last week (during the Congressional Black Caucus) in promotion of the first Urban LGBT Network of which I’ve been a recurring part since its Labor Day launch. I am a “talking head” (on-camera pop culture analysis) for its show “The Gayest [Stuff] Ever”: http://glotvnetwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=109&Itemid=271 For $5 (beyond this preview), you can subscribe to this landmark TV and on-line experience. There are many shows already circulating. This particular one in which I participate is RACY and IRREVERANT, but FUN!!! (I behave though. LOL!).

LECRAE

My boy Gil Robertson invited me to Capital Grille to meet his client Lecrae, Christian hip-hop artist. Other journalists in attendance included ESSENCE's Cori Murray; Marcia Cole; and BET's Tracey Cooper who saw another repeat of me on "Million Dollar Password" a la The Game Show Channel. Lecrae is a good guy with a solid head on his shoulders and lots of creativity to boot. He is truly one to watch. On that same day, my phone was ringing off the hook with folks who saw Ant and me in the audience of “The Nate Berkus Show” with our beloved Kim Coles.

CHASING KIM COLES

Kim Coles is a girlfriend. And she’s been spending a little time in New York City of late on special assignment for “The Nate Berkus Show”. In a twist of small world moments, my girl Sidra invited us out to New Rochelle for a signature event she hosts. The immaculate home of our New Ro buddy Chenoa Maxwell and her husband Carlyle Peake was the backdrop. Alma tequila comprised the special cocktail du jour. We nibbled on Indian haute cuisine from Rangoli. And Kim Coles was in the house as this “revolution” was televised by “The Nate Berkus Show”. More details once this airs. WE HAD A BLAST!

MARA & TOMMIE

With my new (with a bullet) "Amazing Grace" Mara Schiavocampo back in town and my schedule – of late – keeping me close to home, we are spending as much time together as possible (with our beaus Tommie and Ant in tow) because we ALWAYS have so much fun (Her BIRTHDAY is coming up!).  Our favorite couple called us to join them at MOJO HARLEM – owned by the ever-gracious Mounir Jabrane. This, a few days after we enjoyed a block party they hosted along with our girlfriend/their neighbor Sidra. TV personality/Interior Designer Elaine Griffin was in the house. She and I - strangers one to the other - once shared a flight to Paris, France en route to respective assignments. Ern and I have Georgia in common with her as well (Elaine: from Brunswick; Ern & me: from Savannah).Buddy Diaz and BFF Ern joined us for another wonderful outdoor event. This, as the leaves are changing and the climate getting a little crispier with each advancing Fall day.  LOVE YOU GUYS!

9/11 – A REFLECTION

Picture this. September 11, 2001. New York City. http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/a-letter-from-ground-zero-91101.html  Where were you? I'm FOREVER CHANGED for it! And on 9/11/10, I found myself saying a PRAYER for those who were snatched away, for those who lost loved ones (including me), and for all of us who are left behind to tell the story and testify to the RESILLIENCE of AMERICA!

SHOUT OUTS

1) SHOUT OUT to my model buddies Cole & Paul for being featured (skateboards and all - 2:27) in Paris-based photographer Justin Wu’s “We Are Family” video (featuring the boys and girls of NYC Fashion Week 2010): http://vimeo.com/15040521. I hung with them a bit recently when a storm hit.

2) Ant and I wanted to be in Dallas this past weekend. Our girlfriend DeDe McGuire invited us to her nuptials. CONGRATS, DEDE (pictured on the left)! Scheduling didn’t allow us to attend, but I understand she was ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! THANKS for the invite, DeDe! MUCH LOVE TO YOU… and we hope to see you (and your hubby) soon!

3) Lloyd Boston (pictured right) and I attended Morehouse together. In fact, we lived right across the hallway from each other one semester. Since then, of course, he’s gone to have blockbuster success in Fashion & Style. Please be sure to check out his latest tome “The Style Checklist : The Ultimate Wardrobe Essentials for You”. He’s been on quite the media blitz, including “The Wendy Williams Show” which featured a fashion show segment that Ant was a big part of producing. LOVE THE SYNERGY! LOVE LLOYD!!!!

4) My Momentum Education buddy Liz Murray is now a New York Times best-selling author a la her memoir: “Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard”. CONGRATS, LIZ! And to my readers, PLEASE PICK THIS ONE UP! YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED!

5) Don't forget to tune in this Sunday, September 26th to watch the return of "Conversation with Ed Gordon", at 10PM and the debut of Weekly with my buddy Ed Gordon on October 3rd.

CONGRATS, ED!!!! And my CJ (and my many other friends) who will be working on this welcome programming to BET!

MISS JACKSON... IF YOU'RE (CORPORATE)!!!!????

Everyone is ALL buzz about Janet in "Tyler Perry's FOR COLORED GIRLS..." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLnJt_KVsJY) and her BLACKGLAMA-rousness in Times Square. But Miss Jackson reportedly pulled out all the stops for some 'corporate types' at Radio City Music Hall! You heard right! A FULL CONCERT. And though Ant nor I were there, my Morehouse BFF and Ant's Janet soul-mate Michael K. Watts was there... LIVE! FROM FRONT ROW! (http://www.facebook.com/LIVEfromFrontRow). Though I've interviewed her; posed in pix with her; shot her with Ant by her side; and on and on for magical Janet moments, she touched Michael's hand while starting her show - DIANA-style (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3ZLbtWEQ54) - from the back of the house that is Radio City!!! WOW!!!!! It's all BELOW! GO MICHAEL! GO MICHAEL! THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Fan Review:

Janet Jackson Gives Investors More Bang for the Buck

By LIVE! Mic

I WAS NOT READY for Janet Jackson to enter the hall from the rear of the orchestra via the aisle--MY AISLE!!!  I will never wash my hand again!!!  As you can see from the video, I was barely able to focus on videotaping with JANET FUCKING JACKSON walking down the aisle toward me.  She entered with "The Pleasure Principle,' and shook hands as she sauntered down the aisle.  I think if I had paused to think about what was happening, I would have needed an IV drip.  She didn't look at me, but she SHOOK MY HAND.  <fainting>
