PATRICKRILEYHEADSHOT2.JPGWELCOME to "The Life of Riley" which will include periodic chronicles of pop culture and possibilities that flow out of Patrick L. Riley's day. That's me!!! Through blogging (and soon some other technological features on which I'll keep you posted as they launch), I will pull experiences from my busy life to entertain and inspire all of you. Through this site, I will share my observations and insights.

Some features to look forward to:

1.) "PATRICK'S POP UP(DATES)" will feature stories from pop culture, music, theater, fashion, and the entertainment industry at large.

2.) "The Life of Riley" will also introduce a "take-a-look-at-your-life" section (READ: sort of an advice column), where I will help readers come up with their own questions and answers around what "ways of being" are working (or not working) to have them acheive their respective goals and live their best lives. This section is called "WHO YOU BE?".

3.) Additonally, there will be a free-flowing, organic section called "TESTIFY" from which I will pull from my own life's journey to share and hopefully inspire. Some of the fare may be new musings and experiences. Other times, I may pull from my journals and past sharings to shed light on some uncomfortable truths that I've experienced and that may perhaps play a role in healing someone else's wounds as the real-life experience did for me. From my experience of covering 9/11 as a freelance journalist to courageously coming out (as gay) to my family, "TESTIFY" promises to move those who choose to read it.

4.) And a section titled "PR" (like my initials, but also like "public relations") will include press clips from any coverage I get.

5.) And anytime pictures or video can support an entry (in the blog, and perhaps in the subsequent podcasts, my space, and website), those visuals will keep things aesthetically enrolling. That section will be called "MY TUBE".
PLAYING TO THE POP IN POSSIBILITIES!

"... MY OWN STRENGTH..."

Oh! If I could be two (or even more) places at one time. Or if I could just be present with what is and where I am – in the moment. Instead, I’m managing my five weeks in ATL while looking ahead feverishly to where I’ll lay my head for low-or-no cost while in L.A. on an assignment through October. But there are two welcome short spells in NYC – one work-related; and one slight hiatus [READ: just enough time to switch out my drawers] before I hit Tampa for a week (NABJ Convention - www.nabj.org) followed by that aforementioned two months in L.A. And notwithstanding a couple of beloved sponsors (and the payroll that will only roll out week-by-week and has me catching up on arrears), I have to ensure I can bankroll travel and hotel incidentals; meals; and the many bills before me. WHEW!!!! HEADY and WEIGHTY stuff... and - TRUTH BE TOLD - it feels OVERWHELMING sometimes. But unlike the Whitney of the past on which current Whitney reflects, "I (DO) know my own strength!!!!" And I will make it through. [Heard Nippy's new one, by the way? www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u9INHSQ6mQ].

Oh! And inside all of that, Ant and I must maintain as best a connection/communication as possible with our mutually demanding, respective schedules – especially my around-the-clock demands - that make catch-up time virtually impossible. Some days are better than others for me when we can't speak. Other times, I wile out from the loneliness and the distance. And though he's less a complainer and more apt to just accept it as it is (in those moments) than I am, I know it's rough for him too. But we will get it in – hopefully with several visits in whichever aforementioned location. ACCEPTING ALL PRAYER, MY PEEPS because it is ALL MORE THAN A NOTION!!!!! And I know you understand for whatever your challenges may be. But I had to get that off my chest. THANKS FOR LISTENING...

SO, since touching down in Atlanta, I have hit the ground running with my latest project (which like my first ATL project will premiere on BET – the former August 25th; the latter October 27th) – Details later when I can actually talk about it. But it's reality TV - a new frontier for me!!!! Long shooting days have kept me creatively and physically busy – even exhausted, but grateful for a meantime revenue stream. And Ant has been working mad hours in NYC as “The Wendy Williams Show” (www.wendyshow.com/) has finally premiered on FOX affiliates nationwide (and BET). Her first guest was our Vanessa Williams (www.vanessawilliams.com/) whose mother "Gaga" (Helen) is likely the show's biggest fan (Loves her some Ant too).

(Too, Ant’s been hitting some hot sets and holding it down on our behalf – including the 20th Anniversary of “Do The Right Thing” screening and after party - www.amazon.com/Do-Right-Thing...Anniversary/.../B0024EWP6W) as well as a screening of independent film “Ink”, a spiritual thriller about the power of destiny that some of his Denver folks produced.

My home away from home – this go around – is (again) the TWELVE Hotel in Atlantic Station (www.TwelveHotels.com). My neighbors happen to be the cast of Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married 2?” (www.tylerperry.com). Well, at least some of them are staying here. Hot off of seeing and hanging out with her twin sister Sidra in L.A., I stumbled into Tasha Smith with whom Ant and I hung out at the premiere of the original flick. Malik Yoba is in the house as well as Sharon Leal. When we checked in, Janet Jackson was – of course – with her family in L.A. (and may I say what a wonderful send-off to Michael Jackson at his memorial. So touching! Such honor! So much LOVE!). I was also excited to find that my college buddy Danni was staying here as she was working on one of BET’s new game shows “Pay It Off” which my friend Kim Coles is hosting (www.bet.com). And her now-grown daughter Le-Le is now married and was visiting Danni in Atlanta along with her husband Jason and another dear friend. It’s been 14 years since I’ve seen Danni and Le-Le. What a great reunion that was!!!

I also got to spend time with my “Original Amazing Grace”, best friend Natalie who is a very busy career woman/mother/wife. But she took some time to take me to my favorite restaurant Houston’s (www.hillstone.com). Another time she came and rescued me from a fast-moving depression and talked me lovingly through some challenges. And my Nichole, who is again here in Atlanta with me for this leg, came out to say HI. Of course, I had to capture it.

And though I missed Beyonce this go around as scheduling didn’t allow (though tickets came through), Ant and I will always have Manila where she serenaded me Happy Birthday! I too had to miss “The Wiz” with my friend LaChanze but Ant and our friends Ern, Patrice, Keron, and Kimberly went… and had a blast I hear. Of course, “The Wiz” has been on everyone’s minds with the passing of Michael Jackson. I can’t stop playing this clip of MJ and DR on her 1981 special: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BfvzaSxkSY. In fact, while at soul food joint “Mrs. Bs on 4th” in Birmingham (on a day shoot), I stumbled into a little boy named Tarek who insists he is the next Michael Jackson who some years ago told the boy how talented he was.

Speaking of Diana (Aren’t I always? LOL!): Remember “American Idol” Taylor Hicks? Well, he’s remade a song my Diana recorded on her 1991 “Force Behind The Power” CD. Diana’s “Battlefield” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRRIztNC). Taylor’s “I Live On a Battlefield” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMkEhvnVo4Y).

The sounds of Diana Ross (some remixes from the aforementioned project) and Jennifer Holliday were piping through the speakers at “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Dwight’s home for the 4th of July. My friend Lamoh invited me to join him for the festive celebration. (I know Dwight via my ‘platonic boo’ Carl Nelson). Dwight was ever the gracious host – piling me a plate to go plus a bottle of wine. Truly a class act all around, I look forward to seeing the new season of the show. Afterwards, Lamoh and I hit a set in Douglasville. Another night, we hung out at Tapas Restaurant Eros (www.erostapas.com), which turns into quite the disco scene. We also did a stint at “Harlem Bar” (www.harlembaratlanta.com).

You recall, my friend Greg and I met with Ryan of designer firm Hugh Simms (www.hughsimms.com). Well, I sported the “Gentlemen Johnny” for a Sunday at the Intercontinental Buckhead (www.ichotelsgroup.com). Well, you can now find these looks in high-end department store Segal’s (www.fredsegal.com).

As small world’s go, remember I mentioned how Ant is booking opera burlesque diva “Black Betty” at The Velvet Lounge in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (www.velvetbrooklyn.com/). Well, it turns out an audio guy and friend with whom I work sometimes, Khalif, is her longtime friend and manager. Khalif is here in Atlanta where we uncovered this small-world tidbit.  Meanwhile, my Morehouse brother and friend Khalid is in town on business and we’ve had the chance to hang out a little. He’s here cutting some deals for a couple of animation projects. And he was featured in an image on the cover of a recent issue of Black MBA Magazine (www.blackmbaonline.com/).

And I attended V103’s Car & Bike Show (www.v-103.com/) which featured many and plenty from Atlanta’s entertainment scene – including The Dream, Christina Milian, Bustah Rhymes, Chilli, ‘Housewives’ Kandi & Sheree, Outkast’s Big Boi, and ‘the legendary’ Miss Sophia - the only one with whom I got a picture as I was working and staying focused. But my colleague Steve insisted I get this one.

My assignment here wraps July 29th at which time I will return to NYC for a week before heading to Tampa, then L.A. for two months. But this weekend, I am scheduled to hit NYC for a couple of days (on assignment). Will be great to take in The Big Apple (and see Ant), if only for a night or two. Reminds me of this night in the mid-90s when my college mates Z, Cassandra, and I were getting our feet wet in New York City (along with this fabulous shirt that I must find and remix: It's vintage now! LOL!).

"... HE'S HOPPIN' IT TO HOLLYWOOD..."

He's on his way
He's goin' to Hollywood
He's bussin' it to Hollywood

Before I left New York for my summer away from home, Ant, Ern, Tina, my nephew Noot, and I got to celebrate my Tata and Jules with their respective families and friends. Marriage and matrimony are on their minds and hearts and this day underscored the love they have for each other and that we all have for them. And for what each of Tata's and my respective challenges have been in life and love (the constant being our support of each other), it aches my heart that I can't be a witness to their bond at their wedding ceremony in St. Lucia this summer (READ: economics and work-related conflict), but it warms my heart that Ant and I could attend their shower and that I could demonstrate my LOVE for Tata and now Jules, one of Ant's and my favorite couples. Plus, Ant was instrumental in how Tata came to land on her man. And Tata was instrumental in how I landed on mine. This occasion also shed light on the reality that Tata and I have been in each others’ lives for 14 years and though we don’t see each others’ families often, they are also such a part of our stories and life developments. So, seeing these folks, too, made me happy. And apparently they were happy to see me (and meet Ant and Noot to whom Tata has been a support as well. In fact, Tata, Ant, and Ern are keeping an eye on Noot as he 'stays with Ant and me' over the summer while I am on the road. But that's what FAMILY does.). CONGRATS TATA & JULES!

Show him the way
He's movin' to Hollywood
He's hoppin' it to Hollywood

Well, I’ve been here in L.A. for the last few weeks. And though an adjustment off the top (given I was here to work but couldn’t afford to rent a car nor retain any of the accoutrement to which I am typically accustomed as I have to wait for the wages to come), I am living proof that if you take one step, GOD will take two (or 2,000 even). And with the help of his many ANGELS, all has been not only good for me… but also good for Ant who joined me for a chunk of my time in L.A.As we both are on the eve of things picking up financially, our “village” of generous and loving people helped us to get a vacation (albeit work-related) via not-so-shabby accommodations. My home away from home was The Crescent in Beverly Hills (www.crescentbh.com) - a stone’s throw from Rodeo Drive and Beverly Drive where Ant stumbled into Britney’s sister Jamie Lynn Spears and their mother.

(where you goin' child?)

(where you goin' now)

Many of my friends are working so hard, we didn’t get a chance to see each other. Clearly, Shaun Robinson (of “Access Hollywood” fame – www.shaunrobinson.comis busy as she too was filling in for Meredith Vierra on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” (www.millionairetv.com). GREAT JOB, SHAUN!And in that same genre, my girlfriend Kim Coles was en route to Atlanta to perhaps be the first African American Female game show host on new BET show “Pay It Off”. GO KIM! Meanwhile, my Morehouse brother Charles Reese was busy introducing  "WHO...", an original web comedy series (WWW.AJAKWETV.COM).  The creator, writer, director and producer of AJAKWETV and Emmy Award Winner, Michael Ajakwe ("Soul Food" Sister, Sister" "Martin")  also provides a pro-active new web-programming model . This site also gives you a taste of pop culture humor, eclectic music coupled with some poetry/spoken word among other things. And in addition to being a member of this cast, Charles is managing bookings for The James Baldwin Project for the 2009-10 season and beyond. (lectures, full production, staged-reading & special programming). Visit www.seanohalloran.com/baldwinpage.html  as this season marks Baldwin's 85th Birthday Celebration. As JB said, "You don't tell life, life tells you."And I came close to cocktails at my hotel with my "Amazing Grace" Nichole's 'girlfriend' Mara Brock Akil (creator of "Girlfriends" and "The Game") but she had to postpone me - understandably - for a meet-and-greet with the star of the upcoming project on which she will be working.Let's just say it's another girl-"friend" and I'll tell more when I can. SMILE! But she and I are poised to catch up - if not this time, on my 2nd L.A. leg in August.

He's waited at bus stops all his life
He's been in and out of those spaces

But for those I didn’t see, there are many I did. My good girlfriend Sidra Smith – a film director/producer/acting coach (in her own right – www.gatepassentertainment.com) – has truly been showing me a good time. Also, Ant’s and my buddies Scott (from Sheryl Lee Ralph’s camp) and his partner Tony showed up as the hosts with the most. Amidst their busy lives, they not only welcomed me into their mix but Ant when he got here… and offered up their friends including Ed Roebuck and Tony’s brother Carlton as supportive fun for our outings. Oh! And Tony baked an amazing pound cake which provided the comforts of home. Much needed in this here - to me sometimes lonely - L.A.

Seein' eyes that spoke to him
From sad and gifted places
Sad and gifted places

From when I dropped my bags off in my hotel room, Sidra was there. On our first night out, we hung out at the Abbey (www.abbeyfoodandbar.com), what would become a watering hole amidst my time here in L.A. USA Today’s Kelley Carter (www.usatoday.com), my NABJ sister (www.nabj.org) took me out for ‘a taste of Argentina’ at LALAs (www.lalasgrill.com).

You know he's gonna be dressed to kill
He's gonna find some brand new thrills

On another night, Sidra took me out to Downtown Los Angeles’ Artwalk (www.downtownartwalk.com) - including my reunion with Morehouse brother David Reddick – now known inside his artistry (singing, songwriting, painting, etc.) as Reddick.  Too, I met Sid’s friend Rorie, Co-Founder of “Standing-n-Truth: Empowering Lives To Make A Differeence” (www.standntruth.org). He’s got a film documentary that explores Sexuality and AIDS that he screened one night at Sidra’s place where old friend Miriam and author/actor Stanley Bennett Clay attended (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/6/20/and-you-too-wilona-looker.html). Sheryl Lee Ralph is featured in it (www.sherylleeralph.com).She – by the way – is poised to co-star in a musical staging of “First Wives Club”. It is en route to Broadway but first stop: San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre (www.oldglobe.org). Will be great to see Sheryl back on The Great White Way - bedazzling it as she did in "Dreamgirls" and - most recently - "Thoroughly Modern Millie".
Prior to the Artwalk, Sid took us to the beautiful penthouse of cinematographer/director Christopher Lee Warren who assembled an eclectic party of Hollywood players including his Academy-award-winning father Gene Warren (Visual Special Effects for “Terminator 2” –
www.fantasyii.com). Also: We went to the Crocker Club (www.thecrockerclub.com)on this night which is decked out in the vault of an old bank building. Tres chic!

Whatever he's been looking for
Tell him that there's so much more
In Hollywood, Hollywood

Then, on the night that Ant got here, Sidra took he, Tony, Scott, and me to a party at HERE (www.herelounge.com) to promote her friend Logan Alexander’s project (www.DYKEOTOMY.com) - a coffee table book, a reality TV series in development, and a conversation challenging gender lines.Logan really photographed some compelling portraiture of lesbians who each show up with a "butch" look (likely something closer to their everyday persona) and "femme" (a glamorous, feline approach to their aesthetic).I was excited to bump into my NYC stylist friend Phillip Bloch (www.phillipbloch.com). We're used to seeing each other and hanging out on the East Coast. As I'm such a big fan of anything "Noah's Arc", imagine my excitement to see Darryl Stephens, Noah from “Noah’s Arc” (www.myspace.com/darrylstephens).And we got to hang out with Vanessa Williams (of “Soul Food: The Series” fame). She is Sid's friend and ever-the-sweetie – sharing the astrological sign of Taurus with my Ant. Afterwards, we all grabbed a bite at Bossa Nova (www.bosssafood.com) before hitting up a house music set called “Dirty”  at Akbar (www.akbarsilverlake.com) where we hung out – for a minute – with singer extraordinaire Rahsaan Patterson (www.rahsaan.com). Ant has been a fan since his KIDS Incorporated days... and I just LOVE HIS VOICE! And my new DIANA ROSS FAN BFF Curtis was also in the house and has been serenading me via voice mail with rare ROSS treats all week - from a BBC radio special she hosted a few years back in which she plays music from the '50s to the new millennium and comments on her idols, her contemporaries, and the new artists out today - from pop, soul, and hip hop. I knew about it, had heard excerpts, but never heard the whole thing as he - over 30 messages or so - generously shared. FRIEND TO FRIEND, CURTIS!

 Painted faces, sunburnt skin

Fixed expressions, smiles worn thin

On a random day in Hollywood, I stumbled into “Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles” (www.roscoeschickenandwaffles.com). It was so good that it inspired a return visit with my college mate Everett Oliver who I’d not seen in 17 years. He is an International Voice-Over Talent Liaison – inclusive of the Animation industry to which he’s served – from “The Simpsons” to “King of the Hill” for the last ten years and more.  And our friend Theo happened into town alongside Ant and me. Ant got to hang out with Theo and Theo’s college friend Victoria who I got to meet at “Jack & Jills” in Beverly Hills (www.eatatjacknjills.com). She’s an aesthetician at world-renowned Anastacia (www.anastasia.net). We also ran into Ramon, partner of "The Eyebrow King" Damone Roberts (www.damoneroberts.com/). GOT BROWS?

Caught in the blink of neon of Hollywood

Bending battles, maneuvering schemes

Then, for L.A. Pride (www.lapride.org): Ant, the fellas, and I enjoyed a fab performance by Deborah Cox – featuring Shep Crawford on the keyboards (www.deborahcox.com). She was in GREAT VOICE but leaned heavily on the tracks of her techno-versions for which the kids live (10 #1s to boot). Though Shep Crawford was present to flesh out tracks and a tempo intros on keyboards, wish she’d had full-out band that Fantasia had. MISS FANTASIA's band, set, and performance were on FIRE – as always. (One distinction is – this time – Fantasia has begun to let her stylists work their magic on her now head-to-toe, presentable self… as evidenced by some of her latest promo shots that will – in excerpt – be featured on her upcoming CD project.  Atlanta-based Derek Blanks did these shots: www.dblanks.com). And again: she sang for the GODS!!!!!!! After the show, her manager Brian invited us to be an intimate audience with Fantasia at the Sofitel Beverly Hills (www.sofitel.com) where were it not for our personal invite from Brian, we might have skipped this spot as the ‘velvet ropers’ were not kind. But one or two monkeys don’t stop no show. Fantasia sang R. Kelly's 'Step In The Name of Love" to me as she danced playfully with me. What fun and excitement as Fantasia is MY FAVORITE IDOL though I LOVE Ruben, Kelly, Jordan, and Carrie as well. She's preparing to go on the road as Celie for 'The Color Purple' as she films a VH1 reality show and puts the finishing touches on her upcoming CD including production from Missy, Babyface, etc. (www.fantasiabarrinoofficial.com). Comedian Luenell - who too made an appearance at LA PRIDE - is a HOOT OF A LADY!!!!!! LOL! She hung with us at Fantasia's after set and told me she's doing HBO screen test next week for show in which she'd play sisters w/Loretta Devine and Kim Whitley - a combo that at one time or another included Anna Marie Horsford in the proposed cast.

False expressions, washed up dreams
Everybody makes believe
In Hollywood, Hollywood

We also got to see Ant’s childhood/high school friend Paul who lives in Venice Beach (and whose mother knows post-Diana Supreme Lynda Laurence who toured with Miss Ross  (left of Diana) during her “Return to Love” tour in 2000.Paul is a Director of Photography himself from the reality TV world ("I Wanna Work for Diddy", "Kitchen Nightmares", "Baldwin Hills", etc.) and was such a host for us. He took us to one spot in Santa Monica called “Dakota” (www.dakotalounge.com). We also got to hang out with Ant’s friend Crystal – including L.A. Laker-watch. She too was a gracious host who made sure we had a good time during Ant’s and my stay here – including a drive by “Bar Copa” in Santa Monica.

(oh child what'cha doin'?)
(what'cha doin' now?)
(what'cha been' doin'?)

I got the opportunity to meet the Judge Mablean Ephriam, aunt of L.A. native Morehouse brother Mario (my NYC buddy who has been a 'saving grace' through much of my struggles of late - from providing me temp work to paying me an allowance to help me make it through some of the rough weeks to just being there - for Ant and me.). He came to town (his hometown of L.A.) and went even a step further in loyalty and friendship to invite me to join him at the former Divorce Court judge’s Father’s Day brunch (www.mableanephriamfoundation.comfeaturing a host of my favorites from BLACK HOLLYWOOD - including his aunt - who I've ALWAYS wanted the privilege to meet. Now, keep in mind, I have met and interviewed many in my career. But I've not had the chance to meet ALL of my true inspirations. Many of them were in the house on this day... and VOILA: ANOTHER POP CULTURE FIESTA for me!!!! Including the aforementioned, also in the mix: Loretta Devine (of “Dreamgirls” and “Waiting To Exhale” fame; She sang Mariah Carey’s “Hero”). I did get the chance to interview Loretta in L.A. about 10 years ago at the Four Seasons for a BET Weekend Magazine cover story that I wrote; Anna Marie Horsford (“Amen”); comedian Michael Colyer; the amazing Gospel vocals of Tramaine Hawkins - Mario's favorite; Mother Love (“Forgive or Forget”) with whom my other Morehouse bestie Michael K. Watts used to work. She sent a big hug his way!; and one of my LEGENDS: Ja’net Dubois (www.janetdubois.com) who in addition to being an awesome actress (most-renowned as The Evans’ neighbor Wilona and Penny’s mama a la Janet Jackson, but is also now known as an artist).
She and her daughter were so kind to me and asked to stay in touch.Kiki Shepherd, Ron Glass, Tyresa, Kelly Price, and others were also in the house. Coupled with watching the first two installments of the new TV One “Unsung”s (
www.tvoneonline.com/shows/show.asp?sid=902): Minnie Ripperton and Melba Moore, my time here in L.A. has truly been an awesome backdrop for “Black Hollywood”.
Also, after 19 years or so, I got the chance to meet Mario’s whole family – from mom and dad(s) who were all so cool and rounded out Mario and how he came to be the awesome guy he is.Also, I met many of his other family members - including creative cousins like Darlene (www.blaqiyce.biz) and I got to see Mablean Ephriam’s daughter Tajs – a writer and filmmaker in her own right.

He's on his way

He's goin' to Hollywood

He's bussin' it to Hollywood

After Ant left, Tony took care of me as Scott was out of town himself. We hung out with our friends. We dined at “Home” (www.homelosfeliz.com). We did runs at Target and Trader Joe.  Ed and I went to “Catch One” to see the drag show (www.myspace.com/jewelscatchone). Also: the BET Awards (www.bet.net) are getting ready to happen as I leave town for Atlanta on a 2nd five-week Atlanta assignment. I got an invite but could only honor a couple of the pre-awards events. And multi-media journalist Herndon Davis popped by to say HI (www.herndondavis.com). He’s always working on cool projects – including publicity for E. Lynn Harris who has a current book out, "Basketball Jones" and an upcoming project in October "Mama Dearest".And remember I mentioned my buddy Anthony Hill who was in Atlanta working on the staff of Tyler Perry's "Meet The Browns" for a short window - staying at the same hotel (www.TwelveHotels.com) at which my colleagues and I were staying during my first 5-week run in Atlanta (He was on the residential side).

Well, he's back in L.A. and is now the head writer on a new show. He invited me out to "Michael's" (www.michaelsonolive.com) in Burbank for cocktails and karaoke. Anthony is now the head writer on Tyler Perry's "Meet The Browns" (www.tbs.com/shows/meetthebrowns) and all of his L.A. friends - and now Greg and me - came out to celebrate him before he returns to Atlanta to write his new episodes (and of course, he and I will be hanging in the lobby again as I will be back in Atlanta myself for five weeks). Since karaoke was the order of the day, clearly Michael Jackson was on everyone's mind and catalog choices - including me ("I'll Be There" and my first time doing "Never Can Say Goodbye" - ALL FOR MICHAEL - in addition to my staple "This Woman's Work" - all of which were well received). Anthony asked me to join him (and another friend of his) on Billy Joel's "For The Longest Time". Another sweet and talented lady, Pam, requested my best 'Luther' to her "Cheryl Lynn" on "If This World Were Mine". We rocked the house! But the spirit of Michael closed the night out as all joined hands on stage in a love-fest homage a la MJ: "We Are The World". Though karaoke represents levity and joy (and - for some - lots of alcohol. SMILE!), emotions ran deep all around as the reality of his passing truly hit home. But what a legacy he's left behind! CONGRATS, ANTHONY HILL. See you back in ATL.

Also: Miss Aretha Franklin is in town and performed at the Hollywood Bowl. Since my Detroit friends Earline Franklin and Greg Dunmore were in town, I got the chance to see “The Queen” – first time since March (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/3/26/people-say-im-the-life-of-the-party.html). But this time, she performed a brilliant set.Greg, Ron, and I enjoyed the show together. And Ed was there too.  Then, she hosted an after set at The Peninsula (www.peninsula.com). Halle Berry; Courtney Vance and Angela Bassett; Billy Dee Williams; DIVA expert David Nathan; Jesse Jackson; Seal; Loretta Devine; and Temptations' lead singer (on "Treat Her Like A Lady") Ollie Wilson came out to hail the queen. Millie Scott (my Ed's sister) and Fonzi Thornton - both background singers known for their solo works as well - backed up Aretha with their sweet melodies.

Aretha's set:

And we want to take a moment (of silence) for brother Michael....<silence>.Thank you Lord for taking Michael to a higher place."

GOOD SHOW!!!!!

Then, the after party at The Peninsula had everybody dancing and dining until the late hour. I told Aretha her show was 'perfection' except that she didn't sing "Jump To It". The DJ made up for it by playing it at the after set and the dancefloor was filled with folks fondly remembering one of her big '80s hits (produced by Luther Vandross). Also, I hipped her that I was the one that screamed out "Happy" from "Lady Sings The Blues" after she asked the audience if they recognized the melody she was playing on the piano. From the stage, Re said "Where did we get you from?" She laughed when I told her it was me and then introduced me to Billy Dee Williams who I interviewed a few years ago in Santa Barbara, but this is my first time getting a photo op. Truly a highlight! And after that my NABJ friend Brian and some of his friends popped by and took me out for another few hours - making this particular night quite the marathon.  Though we love to hang out with the A-list set, Greg and I enjoy the low-maintenance side of life too - just hanging and - in my case - getting a ride for chewing and chatting amidst the week (We always seem to be in the same cities at the same time... and make sure to enjoy ourselves along the way - even if business is the main dish).  On the first night Greg was in town, he took me to Zeke’s on Santa Monica (for hush puppies, hot links, and Caesar salad. YUM!): www.zekessmokehouse.com. Also, we did a session at Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles... and on another night, we joined 'Entertainment's Finest' Earline Franklin; President & CEO of Push-It Online Newszine Bruce Knight (www.push-itnews.com); female doppelganger to Kirk Franklin (with a new CD coming out in September) Nicole Faithful Franklin; 'legendary' publicist Ron Carter; and my friend/producer/right-hand-to-many-a-diva (including my favorite) Ed Roebuck for good ol' diner food at "Mel's" (www.melsdrive-in.com). We too got the chance to enjoy a really quaint restaurant (recommended by Scott and Tony): Alcove Cafe & Bakery (www.alcovecafe.com) in their neck of the woods: Los Feliz. Great desserts (lemon coconut cake and peanut butter cookies) and savory dishes - like the tasty crab sandwich - were the order of the day. I even had a loving memory of my late, great mother as Greg and I dined at Marie Callenders (www.mariecallenders.com) - a favorite of hers when we lived in San Bernadino, California in the mid-to-late 70s while Dad was nearing the end of his 27-year Air Force career at Norton Air Force Base. The memory was blurry as to the actual significance of the restaurant, but my siblings corroborated that Marie Callender was - for sure - one of mom's favorite places to dine ("... and kids eat for free."). Meanwhile, Greg just completed a well-paced piece on Aretha Franklin making her first appearance at The Fox in Detroit. Check it out on his site www.PULSEBEAT.TV (http://pulsebeat.tv/review_3.html) and YOU TUBE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gj_32OPp_34). Also, on one of our days in L.A., Greg joined me for a quick drink with Ryan McCarthy whose ties are taking retail by storm (www.hughsimms.com).  I like “Gentlemen Johnny” - one of his many selects. My Morehouse brother Justin introduced us via FACEBOOK and since my itinerary landed me in L.A., we decided to meet for a bit. And Greg and Ryan uncovered that they too have an alma mater in common: Cornell University - the last frontier of The Ivy League. Ryan enrolled us in his companies ties and assured us they aren't stopping at the neck. Look for cuff links and a number of men's and women's couture options on the horizon.

He's on his way
He's goin' to Hollywood
He's bussin' it to Hollywood

Before I leave, I will have attempted to attend one of the editors with whom I’m working, Steve Hall’s father’s book signing for his bio “Bronzeville Bootstraps” (www.bronzevillebootstraps.com). But if not, here’s the shout out. The book chronicles what it took for his father to be an entrepreneur in Chicago at a time when African Americans were struggling to simply be considered citizens of this nation.

AND A FEW OTHER SHOUT OUTS:Back in New York City some months ago, my Atlanta buddy and Morehouse brother Tony Preston invited Ant and me to the recording studio as he was working with Ultra Nate (www.ultranate.com): http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/9/17/blue-thats-the-new-color-children.html. Well, the single is out: http://www.giantstep.net/releases/2354 And Preston is jet setting with his client Chris Willis whose house music is taking the world by storm (www.myspace.com/chriswillismusic).

ALSO: Just in time for the summer, Karen Bernod (www.karenbernod.com) has a new single “TOE RINGS ‘N’ ANKLE BRACELETS. It’s the first of four DIGITAL-ONLY singles she’s releasing in anticipation of her new album PLANTING SEEDS. The single is available on ITunes and CD Baby NOW and other digital stores.  And it’s not exactly new music, but Tony took me to the Amoeba Record Store in Hollywood (www.amoeba.com).

I spotted two remastered editions of my Diana Ross’ 2nd and 3rd solo albums: “Everything is Everything” and “Surrender” – chockfull of bonus material. Talk about HEAVEN!!!!!

Also: VIBE MEDIA GROUP has launched new print and web properties: THE MOST! (www.THEMOSTmag.com). They cover the hottest and juiciest in urban celebrity style. SHOUT OUT to my girl Olivia over there! And though I had to miss it for me West Coast commitments, I want to send my buddy Sam Fine a CONGRATS for his new DVD (www.samfine.com).We just hung out at a fab set for Vanessa Williams before I left town, but I hear the party was FABULOUS!From Iman to Ant's boss Wendy Williams (www.wendywilliamstvshow.com)- even RUPAUL was in the house!

ATLANTA! HERE I COME! AND L.A.? UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN... in August!!!!

R.I.P. MICHAEL JACKSON. No words...

"WELCOME TO THE COMFORT ZONE..."

"WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN YOU NEED TO BE LOVED LIKE I NEED TO BE LOVED?..."

Time flies when you’re having fun and – in my case – when you’re enjoying life with the one you love. Ant and I have made the most of my time here at home. But now, I’ve got to get back on the road. I’m heading to L.A. for a couple of weeks followed by another month in Atlanta. Then, I return to L.A. for a month. As an independent producer/personality/writer in a recession, it’s good to have booked work when many of my clients have cutback and/or are on summer hiatus. Also, it’s good that this work will be seen by the world come Fall (at which time I will talk a bit more about it). Of course, I'll be missing Ant in the meantime. But duty calls...

"...I'LL LET YOU KNOW JUST WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO. WELCOME TO THE COMFORT ZONE WHEN YOU NEED TO BE LOVED LIKE YOU NEED TO BE LOVED..."

Miss Ross was in town. Tony-Award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, my diva joined Covenant House President Kevin Ryan on stage in New York City to offer her support after homeless youth being helped by Covenant House (www.covenanthouse.org) performed the show-stopping song “One Day at a Time”. The benefit raised funds to provide food, shelter, clothing, educational opportunities, job training and counseling for homeless teens. Ms. Ross called Covenant House a builder of bridges and a place of shelter and hope for children in need. Kevin Ryan noted that Miss Ross has spent time with these kids on more than one occasion. On this night, she gave $75,000: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoqWwj6BRqo.

"... WELCOME TO THE COMFORT ZONE. DO WHATEVER FEELS RIGHT AND TURNS YOU ON..."

As Diana extended herself to the children, Miss Vanessa Williams (who recently serenaded “Touch Me In The Morning” to Miss Ross at The Kennedy Center Honors) shared her talents intimately and boldly at a special listening party for her new album “The Real Thing” (out this week).

LIFEBEAT (www.LIFEbeat.org) - the music industry’s leader in fighting AIDS - and new-managing editor of www.ESSENCE.COM Emil Wilbekin hosted the event. The Greenhouse (www.greenhouseusa.com) was the backdrop. Makeup artist extraordinaire Sam Fine (www.samfine.com), who has a new DVD coming out, and stylist Deb Medeiros made it possible for Ant, Ern, and me to attend. Miss Williams looks stunning - every bit 25 and was in great voice as she performed the sultry, sexy music of her new project “The Real Thing” (www.VanessaWilliams.com) and (www.ConcordMusicGroup.com

).

Before her brief set was up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W-4z6-_2vA) and (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbIFbRChCJM), however, she dusted off two of her “Comfort Zone” ditties: “Work to Do” and “Comfort Zone”. Also check out her new videos: “Breathless” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GRfVneyvc0; “Just Friends” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsf-bjSZCXs; and “Close to You” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY-GxDRfivA. HOT!

And we were in good company, including several of Vanessa's "Ugly Betty" stars including the father played by Tony Plana. He shared with us the news that 'our favorite show' is going to be on Friday at 9pm next season - so make sure you follow it (www.abc.go.com/primetime/uglybetty/index).

"... AFTER A HARD DAY AT WORK, THERE'S ONE THING TO BE CERTAIN OF..."

The last couple of weeks have been chockfull of fun:

While Ant’s frat brother Chris was in town, we did a lot. We hung out with my Morehouse brother Michael Bryant who was hosting Shahid and Eugene – friends of his from South Africa. I’d met Shahid in 2004 and we had a great time – from restaurants to clubs. He wanted an encore presentation. However, we had to settle on some cocktails at legendary Lenox Lounge. Afterwards, we went to a couple of spots in the Village including “Urge” which is next to DTOX where my friend Randall is now giving a Sunday night set “Relapse”.

The next night, Chris had to hook up with some friends. Ant and I decided to go by the Port Authority bowling alley for a drink before hooking up with our friend Carl to go to Mara Schiavocampo’s buddy David Fuente’s rooftop apartment for a lovely night of champagne and the stars. Afterwards, Carl, Ant, and I went to The Secret for its Saturday night party. After that, we went to No Parking before calling it a night. Always bumping into folks there.

On another night, Chris, Ant, Carl, and I went to see “RAW: No More Secrets, No More Lies”. Though we were there to see my buddy Demarco Majors, he was out of town. Still, we enjoyed the show comprised of ‘full frontal nudity’. Actors’ Playhouse (www.nyactorsplayhouse.com) – now co-owned by Lawrence Page – is now opening its doors to cutting edge theatrical fare like “RAW”. I got the chance to pose with Mr. Page and some of the cast. Afterwards, Ant, Chris, and I went to a White Party thrown at HK Lounge (www.hkhellskitchen.com) by Khary and Ray (www.myspace.com/nightlifenyc). My Chicago Carl’s good friend Pierre (and others) were in town from Chicago and I got to introduce them to my friends Seitu and Toyce. We all had a great time.

"... THIS OL' FAMILIAR LOVE. IT'S NOT UNUSUAL TO FIND THAT IT'S SENSUAL..."

On Sunday night, Ant continued his new tradition of bartending at Velvet Cigar Lounge in Williamsburgh alongside promoting a MUSE. PRINCE was the artist of the night, compliments of D.J. Stereotype.

My favorite Director of Photographer James Curry (www.mindfilemultimedia.com/) came by as did my Morehouse brother Michael Bryant.

http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/5/19/the-one-thing-missing-was-you.html). I was excited that my Nichole and dear friend Dawn came. Gail and Jamar (recent Fashion Institute grad) – formerly of “N” – were in the house. Gail DJs and is an artist, you may recall (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/2/just-like-little-children-know-how-they-have-fun.html).

And burlesque dancer Black Betty popped by. She may be doing some sets at Velvet down the line. Lots of our friends came out on this night. The following week, his MUSE STEVIE WONDER knocked everybody’s socks off. And the crowd built to a vibrant roar by STEVIE’s week. New friend Tetiana Anderson (my co-host from “Drums Along The Hudson”) came out.

On Memorial Day, Ant and I spent time with our favorite couple Mara and Tommy for comfort food and good TV (Plus, we played with their babies - two dogs and a cat). It's also been great to just casually hang out and bump into friends - like Mario and Melvin. They are both always so supportive and uplifting. As we each sometimes go through our challenges, the others are always there to support in whatever way they can. I love having my friends around and in my life - like family. Comforting. While having a bite at Dallas BBQ one day, I stumbled into Manivone and Chris. Also, my good friend Earline Franklin was in town. You'll recall, Earline made it possible for me to be a part of her sister-in-law Aretha's birthday festivities (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/3/26/people-say-im-the-life-of-the-party.html). When in town, she stays at the Trump on Central Park West. We enjoyed a light meal at Houston's (www.hillstone.com). The rest of the week wasn’t as relaxing, though often we were enjoying the theater. By the way, since announcing that my friend LaChanze is doing “THE WIZ” (as Glenda the Good Witch) - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2009/4/11/just-like-a-circus.html, my Carl Nelson ‘s buddy Tichina Arnold has been announced as Evillene. And singer Ashanti has been announced as Dorothy. I hope I get to steal a moment to see it (www.citycenter.org/). Not exactly Broadway, but Ant and I wanted to be sure to support our friend Reggie Barnes in the play “Eulogy For The Blackman” – described as a wild and farcical adventure about “negative” black men and the community that wants to disown and eliminate them. Jamal Williams wrote the play and Michele Baldwin directed it. CONGRATS, REGGIE! GREAT JOB!

I didn’t get a chance to see it but I stumbled into “Lackawanna Blues” writer and director Ruben Santiago Hudson whose current play “Things Of Dry Hours” is running at The New York Theatre Workshop (www.nytw.org). After Michael K. Watts and I had great and cheap meal at “Simply Pasta” (www.simplypastanyc.com), I hooked up with friends Sana and Ike for celebratory cocktails as Ike just landed a gig. Michael and I reflected on the great time we had at our National Association of Black Journalists Regional Conference a couple of days prior (www.nabj.org). As always, it was great to see everybody. Ike, meanwhile, wanted me to meet his girlfriend Cassie Freeman (www.cassiefreeman.com) – actress extraordinaire – credits including Spike Lee’s “Inside Man” and Chris Rock’s “I Think I Love My Wife”. She was hanging out with Ruben, crew, and cast – including associate director Jade King Carroll who was a joy. Delroy Lindo (who did “Crooklyn” and many other roles) – is also in the play and was hanging out last night. Cassie is such a joy and a talent. I look forward to knowing her more.

"... THERE'S NO NEED TO TRY OR COMPROMISE OR SETTLE FOR ANOTHER OUTSIDE MY LOVE..."

So many of our friends are expressing themselves in such unique and spirited ways.

  • My girlfriend Cy had a fabulous event Ant and I weren’t able to make, but I hear it was fabulous (We did get to hang out with she and the gang a day or so later). Ant and I were busy preparing for our out-of-town guest alongside a commitment that took a chunk of our day. Cy hosted a special how-to event called "High Design On A Dime: Dinner Party Essentials." It was a Victorian Punk Tea Party. She’s a lifestyle designer (www.vivedesignhaus.com) and this particular event (at Brooklynski – www.brooklynski.com) provided tips & ideas for wowing dinner party guests with even the smallest of budgets. Topics included how to create ambiance, crafty decoration ideas, and unique places to source materials.

"... THE THING TO DO WHEN YOU GET THROUGH. HEED THE MESSAGE. SEE THE COMFORT OF MY ZONE..."

  • LIVE OUT LOUD (www.liveoutloud.org) – the LGBT youth mentoring organization and scholarship donor asked Ant and me to speak at The Brooklyn School of Social Justice for PRIDE week. We spoke last year (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/20/a-reversal-of-mendacity.html). The students had lots of questions!!!!!!! And Ant and I answered them all - from the sublime ("what did your mom say when you came out? ") to the ridiculous ("Do you two kiss? Who's the man and who's the woman?" LMAO!). But Ant and I were both impressed with the kids and their coolness about the whole subject. Even as some of their LGBT classmates sat amongst them, there were little to no issues on the homophobia tip, which truly is a sign of progress.

  • While in Oakland, I had the luxury of working with a young man named Charles Handy. He came to town – managing street dancers (from Oakland and Memphis) and inspiring the production of a segment on BETs “106th and Park” (www.bet.com/OnTV/BETShows/106andpark/). He stopped by to say HI to me while he was here.

"... HEY! LET ME MAKE YOU COMFORTABLE. LET ME TAKE CONTROL AND GIVE YOUR MIND A BREAK FROM THE DAY YOU MADE..."

  • So, my nephew has come to stay with Ant and me for the summer. En route from Georgia, he happened to share a flight with Aunt Viv (Janet Hubert-Whitten). Ironically, my Lisa Goodnight just wrote a blog on her (www.blog-aauw.org/author/lisagoodnight/) and some recent challenges and triumphs. And you recall, I had the chance to hang out with her last year at an event (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/7/22/in-a-world-of-fading-treasures-love-is-the-greatest-pleasure.html).
  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my friend Karu who many of us got the chance to celebrate in song via karaoke spot “Second on Second” (www.2ndon2nd.com/). I sang “This Woman’s Work” and “The Boss” while Ant, our friends Kevin-Anthony, and Spelman sister/”Harlem Heights” star Bridget Bland and a host of her fellow Spelman women looked on and sang along. Ant and I were happy to be a part. Thanks to our Bridget for making sure we were in the house.

  • However, FATHER’S DAY is approaching. GIFT IDEA: HUGH SIMMS TIES (www.hughsimms.com/). Lots of style, history, reverence, and hipness to boot! DAD's all over - all DEMOs - will LOVE!

"... LET'S TURN THE LIGHTS DOWN LOW AND THE REST YOU KNOW. I'LL BE HERE FOR YOU 'CAUSE YOU JUST STEPPED INTO THE COMFORT ZONE..."

And Whitney's next CD is due September 1st. We're rooting for her and it to be well, right? www.whitneyhouston.com

Also, SADE is offering up my early birthday gift November 17th. Can't wait!!!!

Channeling our relationship’s humble beginnings when Ant was in Denver and I was here on the East Coast… and we challenged ourselves to see each other once a month, Ant will come and spend a few days with me in L.A. before he starts his work with “The Wendy Williams Show” (www.wendywilliamstvshow.com/). And hopefully I can get a couple of quick visits into NYC to check on Ant and Noot (I MUST SEE “THE WIZ”!!!!). Otherwise, I’ll be back in August… and on the market for my WHAT’S NEXT? And since work has picked up a little, we are BLESSED to be climbing out of our economic doldrums - one step at a time. Like many, we're not out of the woods yet (and I'm filled with angst about my current fiscal snapshot - especially as I will be away from my COMFORT ZONE of home, friends, family, fetal position in my own bed, etc.), but I have a knack for breathing through it these days and talking myself off the ledge each time. I commit to continue BEING A DIFFERENCE towards ABUNDANCE! And STAYING PRAYERFUL that things will work out IN MY FAVOR someday soon! So, HOME (a la THE WIZ) will be here in NYC and I will carry my COMFORT ZONE with me on the road --- to make it through...

"THE ONE THING MISSING WAS YOU..."

I thought my blog entry would simply chronicle my month in Atlanta on an assignment – the general details of which I can share when the ‘reality show’ is ready to be seen in the Fall. I would have simply listed the musings and pop culture sightings across which I stumbled while in my ‘home away from home’ over this five-week stretch. But I’ll start with what awaited me here at home over this past few days as I did miss my partner Ant something terrible. I also missed the comforts of my home and the quality of my life. But during these economically-challenging times, it’s been critical that I be willing to sacrifice to stay connected to the industry I still hold dear and to hold onto the business that is – for now - the backdrop of my calling and living.

Though put up in lovely quarters and enjoying all the cuisine Atlanta has to offer, I was very excited to land at JFK airport the other day and be met by Ant and a roundup of ‘my favorite things’ that had been missing while I was away from home. He lined up TIVO – so we could catch up on the shows I didn’t have the time to watch. He served a tasty meal of salmon, asparagus, and fixings. We held onto each other for dear life before heading into the city for some time-sensitive errands (bills still have to be paid, etc.) and of course, some social time at SOBs (www.sobs.com). John Legend introduced his little brother Vaughn Anthony (www.john-legend.net/homeschool/) who provided a seven-song indication that he’s got the goods. Additionally, Legend performed a jam session with Estelle… Rick Ross… Ryan Leslie.  John Legend rocks!!!! Then, Ant and I did a little karaoke. (and three times since I’ve been back). The next night, his buddy Mike from Denver (an awesome vocalist in his own right) joined us for an evening. We got our karaoke in but also did some bar hopping – including our old standby “No Parking” (www.noparkingbar.com) where our friend/owner Brian Palmer showed how happy he was to see me. Derrick Briggs whose awesome performance in "Finding Me" entertained Ant and me during our reunion (www.thanks4findingme.com) as we viewed a copy provided us from the filmmaker. Also, I co-hosted an event for my dear friend Carl Nelson. “Drums Along The Hudson” (www.drumsalongthehudson.org/), which I also co-hosted last year, is in its seventh year of transforming Upper Manhattan’s Inwood Hill Park into a POW WOW PLANET. Produced by Carl, it is presented by Lotus Music & Dance in collaboration with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. It is sponsored in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and WABC-TV, including host for the first part of the day, Sandra Bookman. “Drums Along The Hudson” is a celebratory gathering of Native people and a multicultural, family-oriented mélange of world dancers and drummers. Also, Native American crafts and international cuisines were a part of the day. My co-host Tetiana Anderson (of Weather Channel fame - www.weather.com/tv/personalities/Tetiana-Anderson.html) and I introduced a diverse array of performances – from Peru, Korea, and the Mohawk tribe. Ant volunteered for the effort while many of our friends came out to support - including Lisa, Nicole, and Wilson. We also met Theressa Dubois with Equal Access Sign Language Television (www.deafwelcome.org). She gave us an insight and awareness into the US Deaflympic Team (Taipei 2009).   I also got to enjoy a quick breakfast in Hackensack, NJ. My sponsors were another of my ride-or-dies Lisa Goodnight and her man Lex. We enjoyed southern cuisine and each others' company. The crème de la crème of Ant’s welcome home fiesta was at the Velvet Cigar Lounge (www.velvetbrooklyn.com) at which he bartends a couple of nights a week. You’ll recall, his “Amazing Grace” Manivone has been working there for about a year and graciously extended an offer his way after the owner Phil needed to expand his team. Ant – ever the visionary – has come up with “SUNDAY NIGHT MUSE” – a weekly franchise that celebrates the body of work and the influence of an artist. For my WELCOME-BACK-SET, DIANA ROSS – of course – was the muse. The signature drink "Love Hangover" was made of organic, fruit-infused Grey Goose. And DJ Stereotype scored the night with 45 years of LA ROSS piping from the speakers. My “Amazing Grace” Nichole, who too was in Atlanta with me on this reality assignment, shared ‘the spotlight’ with me as this was her comeback as well. Next week, PRINCE is the muse: www.velvetbrooklyn.com... And come meet Ant and DJ Stereotype in person. I plan to be there as well. I’M SO HAPPY TO BE HOME!!!!!

====

A month of sightings without my every-two-week update means I have about five weeks to playback. I won’t bore you with all the details but the pictures are worth many words. Firstly, my fellow producers (including my Nichole, Shareen, Ev, Ashley) and I stayed at THE TWELVE – Atlantic Station (www.twelvehotels.com/AtlanticStation/HotelHome.do). It was truly a home away from home with each room well-appointed like an apartment - from kitchens to pcs to whirlpool and balcony. You’ll recall, I stayed there last August when in Atlanta to host an event for the High Museum (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/8/26/its-good-to-be-black.html). The lobby is quite the place to see and be seen. In the course of the month, I ran into “Ron” from “A Different World” played by Darryl Bell. He was in town working on a TV ONE special. Denise Boutte who is currently co-starring in Tyler Perry’s “Meet The Browns” was having dinner there one night (www.tbs.com/meetthebrowns). She too co-starred in Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?". My friend Anthony Hill (a writer for the show) introduced me to her. The ladies and I ran into Anthony on more than one occasion in the lobby and hung out a little bit. One night, a friend of Nichole’s Michael Ferguson (former bass player for Levert and planner of music festivals – www.omnisourcevents.com), Anthony (credits also including “Eve” and “Between Brothers”), Shareen, Nichole, and I did a night on the town that included: Gladys Knight and Ron Winans’ Chicken & Waffles (www.gladysandron.net/)... Sutra Lounge (www.sutraloungeatl.com)... my favorite for organic wings and eggs R. Thomas (www.rthomasdeluxegrill.com). We popped by Justin’s (www.justinsrestaurant.com) and met Shareen’s friend Sonia who has a store “Roaring 20s” in Lithonia near its Stone Crest Mall (We went to check her out and bought a few 'looks for less'). Shareen is also friends with Lelee from SWV. So, I got a photo op with her as well. Also in Atlantic Station, we spent time at “Geisha House” (www.dolcegroup.com) and enjoyed sushi. And when we could get out, “The Flying Biscuit” (www.flyingbiscuit.com/) and “Arizona” (www.tripadvisor.com) were two restaurants that floated our digestive boats. Good food all around!!!! Now, I couldn’t be in Atlanta without sniffing out “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”. Don't we LOVE them? Well, I'm told I can't talk about it now (so I've pulled the pix and sightings off). But stay tuned pending the new season. I'll try to remember to recall my own observations once it hits the airwaves later this year. I apologize if my initial post caused any trouble.    I did get to hang out a little bit with Sister 2 Sister’s Jamie Foster Brown (www.s2smagazine.com/). She and I got to catch up as we had some business-in-common later that week. Also, Keyshia Cole’s manager Manny invited me to a set for his birthday (www.velvetatl.com). Here I pose with his brother Steve who I got to know during the month there. We worked together and had a lot of fun too.

Since Nichole and I were both homesick, we were happy to be together as we also had to travel to Oakland for a few days on our assignment. Also, we were more than happy to get our friends and family in the mix as much as we could. Nichole’s sister Tori, Shannon, and Shannon’s friend Vernecia (who works at The Carter Center) came by to see us along with another of Tori’s friends Naima. Always good to hang with the girls. Any time we could connect to ‘our folks’ was a heartwarming time. My sister Janice lives in Lithonia. The same week I came to ATL, my brother Herman was coming to stay with my sister and her husband Vincent. So, I got a few moments to hang with them (Not as many as I would have liked but my work schedule demanded much of my time). My brother’s son Noot (who is now a rising-Senior at Morehouse College en route to NYC for his 2nd year at his HBO internship) came and saw me a couple of times (Spelman sister in tow). My Morehouse brother Welborn Preston came by with a friend Nathan (who knows my Mario who is here in NYC). My “Original Amazing Grace” Natalie got to meet my “NYC Amazing Grace” Nichole. That was a cool moment for me! SMILE! My girlfriend Kelly Welborn (formerly of High Museum. Now, Director of Marketing with Spelman College museum) came by and spent some time with me. She even had a birthday gift for Ant; Miss Cristal (with whom Ern and I spent many Thanksgivings in the Poconos) came by; my dearest Elise found me in Lenox Mall one day. Then, we had some great, ‘spirited’ times at the hotel lobby. And my Audrey – of course – came around as often as possible to lift my homesick spirits. She even joined Lamoh and me one night at late-night supper spot Pearl (www.thepearlbistro.com/thepearlbistro.asp). Afterwards, we even convinced her to join us at a spot Rain for dancing (her Taliban-esque chicness in tow). And I couldn’t be in ATL for a month without my “best friends” from New York City popping by (not so much to see me, but of course, they squeezed me into their missions). Jason and Marqice were in town. Marqice joined Jason a few days later for his birthday which falls near Ant’s birthday - so our households were represented in both places (as Jason wasn't able to attend Ant's birthday set earlier in the month). Marqice had a Queens-based fete upon their return to NYC... and Ant was able to attend that as well. So, we LOVE when we can represent for each others' birthdays. Then, THE Michael K. Watts came down for Mother’s Day to see his mom… and popped by the “12” to say HI. This, as he and I are co-producing the National Association of Black Journalists’ Hall of Fame Banquet (www.nabj.org). One night, while dining at Intercontinental Buckhead (www.InterContinental.com) for business, I was cajoled into singing with a German tourist/pianist at the bar. This, while legendary Frankie Beverly (of MAZE) looked on and later complimented me. The one thing missing was… ANT! But he sure made up for it when I returned. We’ll now be present with the time we do have together before I hit the road for a couple of months: L.A., ATLANTA, L.A., TAMPA. He’ll – for sure – get one of these destinations in for a visit, if not more, though he’s poised to start work on “The Wendy Williams Show” at the end of June (in addition to an art project on which he’s working to complete and get backing for a show). STAY TUNED!

"... JUST LIKE A CIRCUS..."

Ant’s and my weekend in Detroit was a hard act to follow, but follow it we have. From an early celebration of Ant’s BIG 3-0...   to the affordable escape of the Universoul Circus (www.universoulcircus.com/)...   to a “RuPaul’s Drag Race” sighting (www.logoonline.com/shows/dyn/rupauls_drag_race/videos.jhtml), it’s been a time. A good time, actually (butt-kicking economy notwithstanding).

“There's only two types of people in the world
The ones that entertain and the ones that observe...”

I’ve told you ladies about my good girlfriend from Dallas, Mrs. Patrice (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/9/27/is-that-me-i-dont-recognize.html). And through Patrice, we met Delecia, who has visited with us here in New York City a time or two (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2007/9/11/i-look-back-on-all-those-good-times.html). She came down from D.C. where she now lives. Patrice, Ern, and I always have such a great time together – from our travels to Martha’s Vineyard to their ski trips to our visits to each others’ respective homes. Delecia, who we met at Patrice’s wedding, continues to be a part of the fun as well. Ern was delayed with appointments – so I picked Patrice up from the airport before we snatched Delecia up from NYC Penn Station. The ladies and I hooked up with Ant and Ern for a day of cocktails and a rare visit to our favorite restaurant Houston’s (www.hillstone.com/). Then, we did a quick drive by Bergen County’s newly renovated pride-and-joy Century 21 (www.bergenmallonline.com). This, before the girls needed a cat nap. Ant and I – however – had to hightail it to Brooklyn for our good girlfriend Jonna’s birthday party which used the naturally-lit loft space of her friends John and Jared to unveil her new paintings (www.jonnatwigg.com/). HAPPY BIRTHDAY JONNA! Then, after our guests received their beauty rest, Ant and I joined them at The Empire Hotel’s Rooftop Lounge (www.empirehotelnyc.com/) across from Lincoln Center where last I attended a party for Miss Sandra Lee (www.semihomemade.com/). (I also recently interviewed Fran Drescher in a suite there). From there, we went to one of Patrice’s haunts Tao (www.taorestaurant.com) for an assortment of sweet-and-tart thirst-quenchers which – as always – got us to running our mouths about all things controversial and grown-&-sexy. Then, a late night bite at one of our favorite diners The Red Oak (www.redoakdiner.com/) in Fort Lee, NJ across from what was once my place of employment CNBC (www.cnbc.com/).

”...Well baby, I'm a put-on-a-show kind of girl
Don't like the backseat, gotta be first...”

The next day, the girls, guys, and I did bottomless mimosas at HK – just catty-corner from NYC’s Port Authority (www.hkhellskitchen.com). We ate some delicious meals as well. From there, we made sure Delecia (with whom I would have another chance to hang later in the week) got to her train to get back to D.C. Then, we walked to The Playwright Horizons Theater (www.playwrighthorizons.org) to see our girlfriend LaChanze in “Inked Baby”. A group of 30+ joined Ant and me for this special evening of NYC culture that was followed by a meet-and-greet with the show’s star. LaChanze agreed to join us at West Bank Café (www.westbankcafe.com/). She generously posed for pictures and shared ‘tales of LaChanze’ (post-Tony-Award for her life-changing role in Broadway’s “The Color Purple”). One of those tales is an announcement she’s given me permission to share with all of you: She will be playing “Glenda the Good Witch” in Broadway’s revival of “The Wiz” this summer (www.broadway.com/Encores-Plans-Summer-Run-of-The-Wiz/broadway_news/5021972). Of course, I will be all up and through several of those performances. So excited to see LaChanze in this role that Lena Horne brought to the big screen in the film. CONGRATS LACHANZE! It too was great to see LaChanze’s sister Michelle Sapp who shares a light similar to her sister, but on a different stage. Michelle is CEO of MP & Associates which provides professional event management & marketing services (www.mpandassociates.net). She is currently working with the United Way of New Jersey for a Women's Conference (www.uwnj.org/) that will focus on female youths between the ages of 14 - 17. The event will take place later this month at Kean University (www.kean.edu/). The conference will target a minimum of 250 girls from diverse backgrounds including "at risk" female teenagers. Michelle was looking to book the "perfect" keynote speaker to motivate these young women. Well, Michelle came to me for a referral (or two). She went with one of my top referrals: Miss Tracey Moore Marable, dear friend/director/acting coach extraordinaire/all-around spiritual force (www.thespiritedactor.com/) who is making quite a name for herself in the media’s eye these days (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo-ckgXdkU0 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnjxKdIAYt4). Anyone who knows me how much I LOVE SYNERGY! So, I’m thrilled that two of my favorite people are collaborating on a project that is for such a good cause.

”...I'm a like the ringleader, I call the shots

I'm like a firecracker I make it hot
When I put on a show...”

Though I didn’t get the chance to celebrate the birthday of my dear friend Kevin-Anthony (www.b2productions.xbuild.com/) who performed at The Triad (www.triadnyc.com/) earlier this week, friend and VP of Media Relations for 2Rs Entertainment & Media’s Ra-Fael Blanco (www.myspace.com/2rsentertainmentandmedia and www.2RSENTANDMEDIA.com) made it possible for me to give Kevin-Anthony (left) some sugar as he and another favorite Karu Daniels (www.blackvoices.com/blogs/bloggers/karu-f-daniels) attended  party for multi-award-winning Broadway star and now-R&B recording artist Chester Gregory (www.ChesterGregory.com). He was celebrating the release of his debut album "In Search of High Love" at BAR 41 @ Times Square. Too, his music video was unveiled to the masses. Chester is such a talented man. I came with Ant and his “Amazing Grace” Manivone (who was hot off a plane from Puerto Rico). Our buddy Theo – publicist with the most – sponsored the rounds that weren’t built into our V-I-P status that Ra-Fael always makes sure is present for me. (Theo even bought a post-party round of frozen drinks at our BBQ - www.bbqnyc.com/). Too, it was good to hear the news from our buddies’ Troy and Darryl (www.BanginAssArtists.com) who are beginning to present intimate evenings of song with unheralded, underground artists who are – what they deem – Bangin’ Ass Artists. Their first: Abby Dobson (www.abbydobson.com/) who will share her soulful mix of jazz and R&B in an acoustic set at AJA (www.aja-asianbistro.com/) where we celebrated Ant’s birthday – in part - last year. And it’s always great to see my favorite usual suspects including pop/R&B Group THA HEIGHTS (www.thaheights.com/); male supermodel MIGUEL PERDOMO – always the sweetest (and the cutest); model CHRISTINA MENDEZ; actresses MEAH PACE and NICOLE ALLEN; Publisher of Bleu Magazine DE'VON CHRISTOPHER; etc. For more access to Chester Gregory’s work, you can download "I ONLY HAVE EYES 4 U" via http://www.zshare.net/audio/557184312fa21965/ and you can download “SEARCH IN" via http://www.zshare.net/audio/55718637b190188f/ and 2R's Artist Page is at http://www.2rsentandmedia.com/artists/chester2/chester.html.

”...I feel the adrenaline moving through my veins
Spotlight on me and I'm ready to break...”

I mentioned my good girlfriend Shaun Robinson (www.shaunrobinson.com) and her new book "Exactly As I Am". Well, Shaun’s cousin happens to be a dear friend of mine Robin Stone who shares a birthday with me and shared her beautiful Harlem home with Shaun and a wonderful group of NYC tastemakers. Shaun’s Detroit native father even flew in from Motown for the occasion - waxing his brand of progressive wisdom and history to Ant and me. The book is about 'Girls and Self-Esteem' and features the diverse voices of many dynamic women including Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Eva Mendes, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Sharon Stone, Queen Latifah, and so many more. The party brought out some movers and shakers in the their own right – including a blast from my past Sana Butler with whom I used to work at CNBC years ago. Sana is now an author in her own right of “Sugar of the Crop: My Journey To Find The Children Of Slaves”, which is a collection of narratives that stems out of Sana’s search for the last surviving children of slaves. It’s so well written and way compelling. I’m thrilled that my friend Ike brought her back to me. Also in attendance: Co-host of the night (with Robin), my fellow and favorite journalists Patrik Henry Bass – Senior Editor at ESSENCE Magazine (www.essence.com) and his ESSENCE colleague Jenisha Watts attended as well. She's at the on-line companion to the magazine; Jacque Reid (www.jacquereid.com/); Constance White (www.ebay.com/personalstyle); and a host of my other buddies – from Miss Katti Gray (www.kattigray.com) to Lisa Herndon and on and on and on...CONGRATS TO SHAUN on her inspiring new tome: (http://www.amazon.com/Exactly-As-Am-Celebrated-Yourself/dp/0345511956/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234764505&sr=1-1). She is an example of a class and presence that can sometimes be missing from our industry. Though she is promoting a book, I was taken by how present she was to ensure that all her people were in attendance at these book sets (including herself going the extra mile to email her close folks and make sure they got the information they needed to attend.) Even I - with the blog (for example) - can sometimes be so busy that my blasts don't go out comprehensively (and those readers I have will wonder what happened - even taking it personally). I - of course - ask that they charge it to overwhelm and not my heart. Some folks, on the other hand, can be interestingly available when they need something from you and curiously missing-in-action when they reach a certain level. It is what it is as our industry goes, but I want to make sure I celebrate those who - by results - show up connected and approachable at all times (even when it's clearly a busy time). We all have them.

”...I'm like a performer, the dancefloor is my stage
Better be ready, hope that you feel the same...”

Shaun invited me to a party that L.A. Reid and his wife Erica were throwing the next night. This posh set was attended by – I understand – some great NYC folks I'm used to seeing socially here in The Big Apple like Al Roker and his wife Deborah Roberts; Shaun's fellow Detroiters - from Veronica Webb and Crystal McCrary Anthony... to Mr. Ed Gordon; however, I had a prior commitment that prevented me from attending. LIVE OUT LOUD – an awesome mentoring organization for LGBTQ youth – is an organization for which I’ve been a patron and active participant for several years now (www.liveoutloud.info). You’ll recall, a speech I did last year in Brooklyn (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/5/20/a-reversal-of-mendacity.html). Well, this go around, I was asked to moderate “Out In The Arts” at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (www.pratt.edu/). The panelists were most esteemed: Lola Flash, Fine Art Photographer (www.lolaflash.com/); Renaldo Barnette, Creative Consultant, Lauren Dresses (www.ralphlauren.com/); Michael Cooper, President, Point C Studios (www.pointcstudios.com/); Robert Farrell, Interior Designer (www.rbf-ltdc.ipower.com/); Sam McConnell, Filmmaker, owner of McConnell/Hauser Productions (www.manta.com/coms2/dnbcompany_j66l90). After we all waxed philosophical about how we’ve managed to navigate in our respective disciplines with a firm sense of self and who we are (as gay men and women), I had to get on a train to D.C. for some business. (By the way LIVE OUT LOUD is hosting its annual scholarship/fundraising gala on April 27th. If you're in NYC, check out www.liveoutloud.info. It's always a good time and they have the best silent auction items). I got the chance to meet with some of my colleagues in The National Association of Black Journalists (www.nabj.org) which is always a good mix of working hard and playing hard. My lovely Angela Robinson was among a group of folks I hold near and dear. As I am working hard to hold my career afloat, it was great to bounce ideas and emotions off of folks like Angela, Lecia; Bonnie, Russell; Brian; and Ryan and Irving – folks I consider family, my industry family who too are on their respective surfboards - wading through these tempestuous waters known as our careers or our industry. Angela – by the way - got dubbed “Mary Wilson” for the weekend to my “Diana Ross”. Long inside story... but it provided levity to a busy weekend of duty and focus. Angela is truly a force with which to be reckoned in our TV business and a hoot of a good time - www.aabj.org/In_Contact_Intro.html).Kim Betton proved a delight as we shared all things social networking – including her fab site on jazz music – www.crescendojazz.com (We even had a “Cindy” – as in Birdsong. Her real name was Jackie. And there was "(Marcus) & the Vandellas". Too, "Patti Labelle & The Bluebelles" in the house too. Yes, we were all in character. But  what fun!) Also, my dear Delecia resurfaced (with her Denver-based buddy Leslie). The ladies picked me up from my fab, boutique hotel Rouge (which boasted all things RED – from pens to wall treatments to the complimentary wine in the lobby for happy hour) - www.rougehotel.com. This too is where I also got the chance to catch up with one of my dearest “Amazing Graces” Lisa Goodnight who I have missed desperately since she left New Jersey some five years ago. Delecia and Leslie took me to Banana Leaves (www.mybananaleaves.com) and a cool Greek tapas spot Zaytinya (www.zaytinya.com/) that boasts a cocktail called “The Immortal” featuring honey vodka and a slew of other undetectables. Fortunately, I didn’t have a hangover the next morning as that night, I had the luxury of reconnecting to all the girls again. They joined my colleagues and me at Alero Restaurant (www.alerorestaurant.com/) where we partook of contemporary Mexican cuisine. After that, we popped by night spot Jin (www.jindc.com) for bottle service and dancing. My Lisa Goodnight continued to hang into the night with me – even securing me a chili half-smoke (or two) at world-famous Ben’s Chili Bowl (www.benschilibowl.com/). Great stuff. This, after NABJ buddy Brentin Mock (www.prospect.org) – a brilliant writer - took us to a house party with some folks who write for “The Root” (www.theroot.com). On Sunday, one of my best friends and “Amazing Graces” since 1982, Tish, came and picked me up from the hotel to take me to her place. Then, she sponsored dinner at the elegantly-appointed B. Smith Restaurant (www.bsmith.com/). Though not in attendance on this day, I took a picture with a picture of B. Smith and ‘original Supreme’ Mary Wilson – for kicks. (Hi Angela Robinson! SMILE!). Also, Tish and I happened upon a small world. As she and I were dining, in walks her dear family friend Davida who is the oldest sister of a Savannah classmate of ours Lori (who provided all the karaoke at our 20-year high school reunion last year - http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/6/17/someday-well-be-together-we-still-together-kinda.html). We were excited to be running into our Savannah folks in a place removed from where they currently live (I think they are in North Carolina) and where I currently live - that Tish and I just - in the 11th hour - made the decision at which to eat. No coincidences, huh? And hey! We're all from Savannah - so it's clear we wanted to get our fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread dressing ON for Palm Sunday. Tish capped off my special weekend in D.C. with just the right dosage of love power that I needed to keep going. THANKS TISH AND ALL MY SINGLE LADIES!

”...All eyes on me in the center of the ring just like a circus
When I crack that whip, everybody gon' trip just like a circus...”

The other night, my dear friend Renea with whom I did all of my MOMENTUM EDUCATION (www.momentumeducation.com) trainings (along with many others) introduced me to John Castagnini (www.johncastagnini.com/) – publisher of a compelling series of books “THANK GOD I...: Stories of Inspiration for Every Situation” (Limited Edition).

It explores being grateful for the worst that life has to offer towards moving through the negativity to a brighter, loving, more inspired life. My kind of content (Favorite genre of book next to celebrity bio).

Well, after a delectable dinner of roasted Portabello mushrooms and a shockingly tasty shredded artichoke/crab dish at Bianca’s in the East Village with Renea, John, and John’s wife Dina Dillon Castagnini, I joined my Morehouse brother Mario (per his nudging) at Chelsea spot 'g'... and who walks in? MISS REBECCA - 3rd place drag on Rupaul's weekly race won ultimately by MISS BEBE (www.logoonline.com/shows/dyn/rupauls_drag_race/videos.jhtml).

And "he" was cute as a button - sporting the most kempt and curliest of silky, dark brown locks that would make Shirley Temple proud. The children at large weren't checking for ‘her’ but I approached for blog photo-op. She graciously agreed. To ensure she wouldn't punctuate our exchange with any "oh-no-more-autographs-please" shade, I spoke her name and lifted her up with words of pride and encouragement.

It inspired her to give me some sugah before I returned to my "margarita on the rocks, cuervo, no salt". But props to BEBE for being the FIERCEST OF THEM ALL!!!!!

All in a NEW YORK CITY evening: EXTRAVAGANZA! ELEGANZA! Also in attendance, my dear friend Derrick Briggs whose new movie "FINDING ME" is finally premiering next week in New York City for one night only before coming out on DVD.Atlanta. Details to come at a later date.). I’ve mentioned the project before: WWW.THANKS4FINDINGME.COM.

Ant and I were invited (He may attend in my absence as I prepare to leave for a five-week stint in

I even posed with the cast last summer at an event.

From first-time Haitian-American filmmaker Roger Omeus, Jr., comes this inspiring story self-acceptance and self-love. It poses the question, "What am I doing with my life?" Faybien Allen (Ray Martell Moore) begins his journey with this question and it defines every decision he makes. This young gay man world is defined by a homophobic father and a colorful cast of friends who he realizes are as flawed as he feels.

However, when Faybien meets a man that proves there is life after 'coming out' it is revealed to him that he is worthy of love, respect, and happiness. His self-hate, love and relationships collide in a dramatic resolution that will leave him forever changed and reborn. CONGRATS DERRICK BRIGGS! (www.youtube.com/dlbbco) Keep doing your thing, my brother!

”... Don't stand there watching me, follow me, show me what you can do
Everybody let go, we can make a dancefloor just like a circus...”
From Miss BeBe (as in ‘Cameroon’ from Rupaul’s Drag Race) to Jill Scott’s new HBO show “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” (www.hbo.com/no1ladiesdetectiveagency/), Ant and I have been surrounded by contemporary-yet-historical-and-often-irreverent interpretations of African culture. Our Marcia Pendelton (www.walktallgirlproductions.com/) who keeps us in the seats of Broadway’s greatest works introduced a side of Africa we’ve not seen explored so candidly yet pivotally. Nationally acclaimed Brooklyn-based playwright LYNN NOTTAGE’s current project “RUINED” (www.NYCityCenter.org/Ruined) is the story of Mama Nadi who runs a whorehouse in today's raging and restless Democratic Republic of the Congo. The plot underscores some horrific realities of the men and the women who spend much of their time inside of a seemingly senseless conflict. Still, there were laughs and many-a-heartbreak. We shared an audience with Mr. Big-Brother-Almighty himself Giancarlo Esposito. Also, sitting next to us, my friend Kevin Powell (www.kevinpowell.net/).

”...There's only two types of guys out there
Ones that can hang with me and ones that are scared...”

I got an invitation from friend/marketing/networking guru Pam Pickens (www.blackdiamondsnyc.com/about_faces.htm). She is working on a campaign to promote Universoul Circus here in NYC (www.universoulcircus.com/). She invited me to come and attend the show towards a blog entry. Well, here goes. Firstly, I was first introduced to the Universoul Circus about a decade ago when I sat on the Board for NABJ (www.nabj.org). My good girlfriend Paula Witt – communications director for the circus at the time – enrolled Universoul in co-sponsoring our Brooklyn-based regional conference in addition to providing an enjoyable evening of entertainment for my registrants. Since that time, Paula left Universoul for Shore Fire Media and a now-independent career that brings her back into the Universoul-Circus fold from time to time. Imagine her excitement when she saw me on the list of bloggers to attend tonight. Imagine my elation when I got the chance to reconnect with “my old friend” from back in the day. I LOVE PAULA SO MUCH! And I LOVE THE UNIVERSOUL CIRCUS! You must get out and catch it! Ant and I secured an extra pair of tickets for his cousin Shantay and her lovely daughter Makayla who seemed to really enjoy the Chinese Foot Juggles from Shandoong, China. The publicity folks and staff arranged for us to take a tour "back stage". We also got to interview a variety of performers pre-show. Then obviously, we got to enjoy the show. The circus boasted its first woman ringmaster Patrice Lovely (as “Maggie Shirley Lillie Mae Frances Upshaw Jenkins”). Fode Sylla (from Conakry, Guinea. West Africa.) did a James Brown with Atlanta-based go-go dancers Monica Nobles and Jessica Brundidge as his bookends. They performed an old-school-style number with hip hop appeal. Also from Conakry, we got to meet Maria Soumah who is a 'rough rider'. She is the only woman to hang from the horse as her head lies beneath the animal’s belly. And then there were my favorite moments: The Soul Train Line and Platinum Couples – a scene in which two couples (one ‘new school’; one ‘old school’) ‘LIPSYNC FOR THEIR LIVES’! The audience really loved the old schoolers who did their thing! Throw in some well-salted-and-buttered popcorn, a funnel cake, and a Pepsi (oh, a lion, tiger, and bear along with my friend Nekesa Moody from the Associated Press and the NABJ A&E Task Force), you have what amounted to the most light-hearted, childlike fun I’ve had in a long time (maybe since my last trip to Six Flags Great Adventure minus a 1/10 of the overcharges). During these economically challenging times, the Universoul Circus is - for sure - something the whole family can do without breaking the bank (which is already broken for the many fiscal woes in our society today). Check out the UniverSoul Circus blog: http://www.usoulblog.com. For deeper access to stats, go to: http://usoulblog.com/blogger-resource-page/ And check out the FaceBook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/UniverSoul-Circus/64835034103

”...So baby, I hope that you came prepared..."

Another film “American Violet” (www.americanviolet.com) is coming out. I wasn’t able to attend a private screening of it earlier this week, but my friend Jackie Bazan (www.bazanpr.com) is working the publicity on it. She always brings us the great films to NABJ. We're in Tampa this year and working on something that will hopefully bring Jill Scott's HBO star Anika Noni-Rose to our convention for me to interview her and her to tell us all about her animated Disney debut "The Princess and The Frog" (www.disney.go.com/disneypictures/princessandthefrog/) - a clip of which follows:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0j7EactM9s. We've met a time or many - so I think we'd have lots of fun. Planners want to create some magic similar to when I interviewed Jennifer Hudson a few years back before "Dreamgirls". Also, the Disney folks are aiming for similar energy as we achieved when I interviewed Steve Harvey and several 'dream'-makers in Vegas. Hopefully it will all come together and make everyone happy (We'll have to make sure it's recorded this time). Meanwhile, one synopsis for "American Violet" reads as follows: Based on true events in the midst of the 2000 election, AMERICAN VIOLET tells the astonishing story of Dee Roberts (itically hailed newcomer Nicole Beharie), a 24 year-old African American single mother of four young girls living in a small Texas town who is barely making ends meet on a waitress' salary and government subsidies. On an early November morning while Dee works a shift at the local diner, the powerful local district attorney (Academy Award nominee Michael O'Keefe) leads an extensive drug bust, sweeping her Arlington Springs housing project with military precision. Police drag Dee from work in handcuffs, dumping her in the squalor of the women's county prison. Indicted based on the uncorroborated word of a single and dubious police informant facing his own drug charges, Dee soon discovers she has been charged as a drug dealer. Even though Dee has no prior drug record and no drugs were found on her in the raid or any subsequent searches, she is offered a hellish choice: plead guilty and go home as a convicted felon or remain in prison and fight the charges thus, jeopardizing her custody and risking a long prison sentence. Despite the urgings of her mother (Academy Award nominee Are Woodard), and with her freedom and the custody of her children at stake, she chooses to fight the district attorney and the unyielding iminal justice system he represents. Joined in an unlikely alliance with an ACLU attorney (Tim Blake Nelson) and former local narcotics officer (Will Patton), Dee risks everything in a battle that forever changes her life and the Texas justice system. AMERICAN VIOLET also stars Emmy Award winner Charles S. Dutton and Xzibit.

"...I run a tight ship so beware...”

Ant and I have done four years of his birthday (and four of mine). Nothing tops him taking me to Manila to see Beyonce for my birthday in November 2008. But I've done my share to make sure he knows ceremoniously how much he is loved. For his 27th, we did a weekend-long extravaganza - including cake, cocktails, and the club. (For an unprecedented gathering, my 'original Amazing Grace' Natalie and her husband Dwayne flew up from Atlanta while our Patrice and her husband Keron came up from Dallas to take part in the festivities). Then, in 2007, we went back to where we first met - "The Color Purple" along with some other cool runnings.  Last year, Ant's friend Chris joined us from North Carolina. We enjoyed a casual round-up of saki and brownies and museum visits. But now, my baby Ant is turning the BIG 3-0 on April 22nd. Since I’m leaving town for a month, he wanted to have his birthday celebration precede my departure. This, so we can share in the landmark celebration together. (We’re hoping to uncover a day or few that he can come to Atlanta and we celebrate his birthday further. But we'll see. He’s got work projects and freelance field shoots that are popping in as we both aim to stay afloat amidst this here economy. That said, I’m looking at some busy days ahead myself.). But our thoughts were all on Ant as Brooklyn was the backdrop of his party. Inside of our fiscal snapshot, Ant’s aunt Linda generously provided the lovely venue in the Red Hook area. My Morehouse brother (responsible for Ant and my meeting three years ago) prepared a lovely melange of food - from shrimp potstickers to spring rolls to succulently seasoned chicken on skewers, etc. Ern managed the bar. My buddy Lamar with whom we worked last year on a Remy Martin campaign (http://thelifeofriley.squarespace.com/rilys-blog/2008/2/2/beautiful-struggle.html) provided some solid spirits to keep the night going (www.remy-cointreau.com/). Last year, I interviewed a number of 'maverick tastemakers' on their thoughts of the limited edition bottle that David LaChappelle designed for the brand.  And for those who don’t drink VSOP, there was one of REMY's champagne products. Moreover, Ant cleverly themed the night out as a B.Y.O.B. – inspiring a speakeasy and an assortment of liquor bottles to use as props for a creative project. Think of it as a liquor potluck with lots of great friends and energy in the room. He gathered a unique collection of bottles that will be used as art (after they're emptied out). But the ART is really MY ANT who – three years – ago took my blank, boring canvas-of-a-life (in the wake of unbearable grief) and he has been painting vibrant color on it ever since. We are the work-in-progress towards a masterpiece. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BABY! And a shout out to all of our friends who came out to play... and play they did - especially on that dancefloor. Our superstar journalist friend Mara Schiavocampo (recently got some hot press: http://ajr.org/Article.asp?id=4735) and her husband Tommie - both busy folks in their own right - took time out of their crazed work schedules to be with us. I was so excited to see my Savannah homeboy Maurice Marable and his friend Karen in the mix - especially on the dancefloor. And everyone - from Tata to Jules to Carl to Wilson to Valente to Ern to Kimberly to Manivone to Dustin to Chris to Cy to Sana to Ike to Chante to Stacey ('Chauncey' - SMILE!) to Cynthia to Lisa to the many others whose names are escaping me now. THANKS for showing ANT the LOVE!

”...Let's go
Let me see what you can do
I'm runnin' this like-like-like a circus...”

Well, I fly out to ATL first thing tomorrow morning. Sad to leave Ant. Happy to be moving into a new, creative space where a steady stream of revenue can catch me up on mounting debts. I’m back in a month for a month. Then, back again to ATL for another five-week stretch followed by a five-week stint in L.A. There’s a few days of Tampa on my calendar at the top of August as well for the annual NABJ convention for which I have longstanding contract commitments. No Amsterdam on our itinerary yet, though we want to go back (and maybe catch one of Diana Ross' classic Netherlands shows). No Tokyo on our docket just yet as I want to return to my birthplace and experience Japan as an adult. And Ant and I want to see Janet Jackson over there, when she performs again. (Just putting it out there.) But we’ll soon get there... ONE DAY AT A TIME!
